Bug#568839: tasksel: please add readahead-fedora to the desktop task

2014-01-30 Thread Michael Biebl
Seeing that readahead-fedora is dead upstream [1] and can actually have
negative effects with SSDs (which are becoming more and more common on
laptop hardware), I would advise against installing readahead-fedora by
default for desktop tasks.

2014-01-29 Thread Ivan Baldo

And still waiting...
This is a good idea to have, specially for people that don't know
about it, if they install a standard Debian desktop then they should get
this package by default...

Bye.

For comparison, Ubuntu is phasing out usplash in favor of plymouth. It's
not an altogether smooth transition, but usplash isn't seen as viable to
maintain in the long term.

I don't think it ought to be installed by default. Just desktop and laptops.

I also think this is a kind of change that could benefit from discussion on
d-devel first.

IMO if it should be installed by default on all systems then that should
NOT be done through tasksel, but by getting its priority changed to
"standard".

Indeed. However I think desktop and laptops are suitable for usage with it.

We haven't yet looked how to handle it AFAIK.

For it to work I think it is just a matter of not include it as a Key package.

No, not really, but I guessed some people would complain if it is
installed on server setups.
I've no problem with including it on other tasks. My only worry is
that it is linux-specific and I don't know how tasksel is going to
handle that on kfreebsd.

Why only in the desktop task?

Is the rationale that boot speedup is mostly meant for single-user
machines, so, basically, Joe User's own laptop or desktop?

(not arguing strongly against your proposal as I'm using
readahead-fedora myself and agree about the speed improvement it brings)

Hi,

Given the boot speed improvements provided by readahead-fedora it would be
convenient if it is installed by default on the desktop task. Please add it.

Thanks in advance.
