This problem is almost a year old, Squeeze is frozen, and it still exists?!?
I just downloaded todays daily netinst snapshot and I still can't install on
my laptop with a BCM57780 card.

The broadcom driver is not in the cd immage , nor is it in the firmware
package, so there is no way to work around this.

So, when will there be a debian installer with a newer kernel ?
Anyway, even 2.6.32-11 seems a bit outdated...

Ah, great, so this can be closed once the installer uses this version
of linux-2.6.

This issue was reported in bug #553024 - also concerning a Broadcom
Netlink BCM57780 - and fixed in linux-2.6 2.6.32-11 ("phylib: Support
PHY module autoloading").

Comments/Problems:

The key issue seems to be the message in dmesg:
tg3: Problem fetching invariants of chip, aborting.

I haven't yet tried the Knoppix live cd/dvd to see whether that is
successful with this hardware - will let you know when I have done
so.

Many thanks in advance,

   Julian
