It does require that you physically allocate the file (e.g. by writing
zeros, not using truncation/fallocate), which is a little sad on SSDs.
On the other hand a few gigabytes written at install time probably don't
matter much. Also it doesn't work on btrfs. But I do wonder if there are
other real-world drawbacks these days with swap files, given that the
kernel should know the block list on disk and the penalty should hence
be small...
