I think we'll stay with this (the current conversion) for the time being. That might explain why the gradients aren't too much good looking depending on the virt-stuff used, or depending on the hardware, because they get rather “sharp”, which maybe could have been prevented by using a smaller color depth in the first place. But what do I know about that? ;) > A quick look at the iso boot menu or debian installer banner gradients > tells that it’s not 16 bit / 65536 colors. > > Can you confirm we don’t need to keep these restrictions so we can > update the requirements ? I'd suggest keeping those under some kind of “old requirements, not currently [$DATE] enforced” for reference, in case we need to reinstate them. Or drop them entirely (we have a revision history right?) if you feel confident enough. KiBi. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

The wiki for the Debian theme proposals requirements mentions complicated things like : - Isolinux: 640x300px, 4bit color depth (means: 16 colors). View Make Sys Image. - Syslinux: 640x300px, 16bit color depth (means: 65,536 colors), in PNG format. - Debian Installer A picture with 800x75px, 16bit (65536 colors). But looking at recent packages, the PNG are just generated with rsvg-convert that produces plain 24-bit images. A quick look at the iso boot menu or debian installer banner gradients tells that it’s not 16 bit / 65536 colors. Can you confirm we don’t need to keep these restrictions so we can update the requirements ? Thanks, --Aurélien

Hi, I've uploaded a new version of the installer design this afternoon (with the debian logo and a brighter background), if it's not too late to swap, it would be great ;) @Aurelien, I see a darker version, do you need the installer artwork to be more contrasted ? As I'm always trying to improve the whole artwork while designing the missing pieces, there is often changes in the already uploaded pieces. If it is more convenient to you, I can upload only definitve version of each graphic, but it can takes some time ;) Cheers, Juliette

Patch attached to the bug. @Juliette I changed the banner a little to only use the Debian text in SVG form that you can find on the official logo page. We cannot use the original font for packaging as it's non free and we don't want to depend on it for the build process of the theme packages. Besides as mentioned here [1] the official logo uses a stretched (haha) version of the original font but we don't know exactly how much it's stretched. So there's no real point in using the original font to get the exact rendering of the logo either. If you want to add text to some of the visuals you should either use the Debian SVG or a font that is packaged in Debian. Check font-* packages in your favorite package manager. When possible I'd avoid adding texts to the visuals as much as possible as the different tools using them are going to have their own fonts rendered on top of them anyway (ex grub menu, plymouth infos, login username/date…). Also note that Debian is not only GNU/Linux. GNU/kFreeBSD is an official port, and there's also GNU/Hurd although it's not a release architecture [2]. Hi Cyril, I currently have zero knowledge about rootskel-gtk. If it's not an emergency pointers are welcome and I'll have a look next week. If it cannot wait please go ahead. Cheers, --Aurélien

Hi Aurélien, Out of curiosity, are you going to propose patches for rootskel-gtk (for use in Debian Installer), or should I be working on that specific package? For reference, that's #793125.
