Fwd: Re: Fwd: Old kernels used for sparc daily builds

Ping!

Two more weeks and no answer from either Geert or the SPARC buildd
maintainers. I'm CCing this to debian-sparc in the hope to at least
get some status update.

IMHO the best solution would be to adopt the same setup as on most
other architectures: To build the d-i daily images on a buildd. See
below for more information on the setup.

If I don't get an answer by the end of the year I'll add a note to the
daily images overview[1] and possibly similar pages that currently no
sparc images can be provided until some steps in to do the necessary
work.

 Hi Geert

You used to build the sparc daily images for d-i. But these images are
no longer built since June. Are you still intending to provide daily
d-i images for sparc or should someone else take over this job?

I did not receive any answer from you about this. Are you still
interested? Or is someone from the sparc buildd maintainers interested
in adapting the same setup as is used for other archs?

See http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2010/03/msg00599.html for how
to setup the daily builds on Debian build daemons.

 Hello,

It looks like the sparc daily builds [0] are happening in a broken
environment, because the kernel image which gets installed into the
/boot directory of the ISO image dates back to June:

 ju...@droopy:~$ grep 'built on' /mnt/iso/boot/debian.txt
This is a Debian installation CDROM, built on 20101110-15:27.
 ju...@droopy:~$ strings /mnt/iso/boot/sparc64 | grep 'Linux version'
 Linux version 2.6.32-5-sparc64 (Debian 2.6.32-15) (b...@decadent.org.uk) (gcc
 version 4.3.5 (Debian 4.3.5-1) ) #1 Tue Jun 1 06:56:43 UTC 2010
 ju...@droopy:~$

It would be great to fix it as testing the images with such an old
kernel is meaningless (for example, it hangs on my workstation early
 during boot).

Mails can be overlooked by buildd maintainers when they start with “Hi

I'm pretty sure that the images are getting built, as, for example,
today's daily contains the binary packages build from version 1.60 of
linux-kernel-di-sparc-2.6, which was uploaded to the archive just
yesterday. It's just that the kernel which gets installed into the
image is old. I don't know how the build works, but it might be that
the kernel which makes it onto the iso is the same one the build
machine is running (or something :-).

There are two different types of images being built to create a CD
image. The one currently not beeing built is the d-i image. That's the
kernel image and initrd that ends up on the CD. The other is the CD
image which is built, but uses the outdated d-i image. So the udebs
you have on your CD in the pool directory are taken from the mirrors
by the CD build, but the udebs unpacked inside your initrd are still
those from June. Hope this clears things up.
