It turned out that there's #686605 already, so I've just added a
reference to rtl8192se/this thread there.

I've just pinged #-kernel to see whether there was a reason for not
having those modules in the relevant udeb packages; if that's just
because nobody requested it yet, I'll just open a bug report against
the linux kernel to get them added.

That's right. I'm using the netinst CD & I have the firmware installed but the 
kernel is unable to make use of it without the module.

It seems [1] non-free firmware is needed to use that hardware.
You may need the firmware-realtek [2] package on non-free section of the 
archive.
The installer manual [3] provides info on adding external firmware files 
to the installation process.
