Hi,

Booting the Wheezy mini.iso, choosing Help from the menu, pressing F2 says:

You must have at least 44 megabytes of RAM to use this Debian installer.

Starting the installer with 64 MB of memory enters low memory mode, and
reports insufficient memory:

[...] At least 86 megabytes of memory are required.

Continuing the installation then runs into OOM situation.

The two memory requirement statements should be synchronized, 44 (or even
64) MB is clearly not enough.

Thanks,
Feri.

Hi,

thank you for submitting bug reports concering debian-installer, much
appreciated.

I read through all the bugs mentioned here (and I'm sure they were read by
several people at the time they were submitted) and am closing them now as/if
- they (finally) indicated success and/or
- I know from first hand experience that the functionality is working in
Wheezy and/or
- they only contained very little information and/or
- they contained user errors and/or
- they have been from a development phase where things were not stable and/or
- they are very old and/or
- they are wishlist but rather special + exotic and not have been acted on for
years. (See http://blog.liw.fi/posts/wishlist-bugs/ why it's often useful to
close wishlist bugs.)

If I've closed a bug incorrectly please do reply (it's easy to reopen and I'll
do if requested) or just file a new one - thats often better, as the bug log
will be clearer and shorter and not contain cruft.

cheers,
Holger

Indeed, the update hint was missing in the lowmem package. I have now
added that and updated the figures.

The attached patch is a description of an option which does not appear
to be mentioned in any detail in the Guide, (Thinking on, it is almost a

It also occured to me that users might want to see what the sub-menus
contain. At present only the main menu is shown in this section. A patch
is available if required,

Also. Would there be any benefit to having a paragraph or two linking
the menu items to other sections of the Guide.? For example, Linking
'Install with speech synthesis' to section 5.2. or 'Automated install'
to Appendix B. Easily done if wanted. A user reading this section might
want to know what they are in for.

Brian.

Another nitpicking here: please avoid reformating the paragraphs, just
let the text mostly as it is, so that the resulting patch becomes way
easier to read since it'll only show the actually modified lines. Yes,
it often means having lines with varying lengths, but that's less
trouble than patches consisting in whole paragraphs :)

Hello,

It has been reported that it would be useful to add a link from the
accessibility to the boot screen section, as the attached patch does,
since the latter describes precisely how keypresses work there.

Re: Bug#571045: syslinux: Incorrect display of boot screen image in D-I

2010-07-12 Thread Cyril Brulebois
Frans Pop elen...@planet.nl (14/04/2010):
debian-cd does not actually have the image. It is provided by D-I
[1]. So IIUC someone will need to change the boot splash image from
 640x320 to 640x480.

 [1] installer/build/boot/x86/pics/klowner.*

And since nobody dared to click a couple of times in Gimp in the
meanwhile…

Patch attached, although attaching a binary diff sounds very wrong to
me, but if that's what svn gives… I'm going to send a follow-up with
the new files (to -boot@ only). Not sure what the mail size limit is
(if any) on that list.

FWIW: To test it, I made sure to have uptodate syslinux* in my build
chroot, checked the image was broken in a freshly rebuilt d-i, then
updated the image, and checked it was showing up properly in the
newly-rebuilt d-i. That was netboot-gtk's mini.iso for i386, running
inside qemu.

Resized to address syslinux's #571045 by Cyril Brulebois

To create klowner.rle:

  1. convert klowner.png klowner.bmp
  2. bmptoppm klowner.bmp | ppmtolss16 '#FBFDFA=7' klowner.rle

(FBFDFA is the color used for the inside of the n in Debian.)

Alternatively (e.g. if bmptoppm fails):

  1. save klowner.png as klowner.ppm in Gimp.
  2. ppmtolss16 '#FBFDFA=7' klowner.ppm klowner.rle

Tools as of July 2010:
 - convertis shipped in imagemagick
 - bmptoppm is shipped in netpbm
 - ppmtolss16 is shipped in syslinux-common

Bug#579954: installation-guide: Add link from accessibility section to boot screen section

2010-05-02 Thread Samuel Thibault
Package: installation-guide
Version: 20090901
Severity: wishlist

Hello,

It has been reported that it would be useful to add a link from the
accessibility to the boot screen section, as the attached patch does,
since the latter describes precisely how keypresses work there.

debian-cd does not actually have the image. It is provided by D-I [1].
So IIUC someone will need to change the boot splash image from 640x320 to
640x480.

The new chapter about the next generation boot-screen
contains this:

--
If you wish or need to add any boot parameters for either the
installer or the kernel, press tabkey;. This will display the
default boot command for the selected menu entry and allow to add
additional options. The help screens (see below) list some common
possible options. Press enterkey; to boot the installer with your
options; pressing escapekey; will return you to the boot menu.
--

Maybe it should be mentioned, that pressing ESC while revoke the
made changings on the commandline? (so ESC is also a possibility to
get a new start if man has corrupted the command and does not know
the exact content as it was before changing).

Proposal:
===

without applying your changings.

I've made this:
Press enterkey; to boot the installer with your options; pressing
escapekey; will return you to the boot menu and undo any changes you
made.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Bug#413354: debian-installer: Boot screen should have notification about graphical installer

2007-03-04 Thread Manuel Bilderbeek
Package: debian-installer
Severity: wishlist

I think the initial boot screen should mention somewhere how to start
the graphical installer. The text installer is the default, but without
any kind of notification, a user would never use the graphical
installer, unless he happens to know about it or reads the manual (most
don't, of course).

graphical syslinux boot screen

2004-01-29 Thread Bluefuture
 - a graphical syslinux boot screen (needs an artist)

No progress. On the other hand, something like this might be
easy to turn into a decent boot screen:

   http://lychnis.net/img/Debian-background.png

Not a blocker for the next release, but there are good reasons to
   want a graphical boot screen.

Tatlin from Coresis (http://www.tatlin.net/) has made a Debian image for syslinux boot
screen.
He had send me and i forward to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This image should be adapted to resolution, corol depth, and format needed for
syslinux.

If you like it you can contact me for other graphicals stuff for the new debian
installer (gui frontend?).

Friendly.

I replied to the mail with the image, but in summary, the image as it is
is too large and has too many colors to work as a syslinux boot screen.

I also personally prefer Matthew A. Nicholson's image, I think it's more
suitable, but that's just my personal feeling.
