Bug#1078936: cdebconf: allow building without libglib2.0-dev

2024-08-17 Thread Helmut Grohne
Source: cdebconf
Version: 0.272
Tags: patch
User: helm...@debian.org
Usertags: rebootstrap

Hi,

lately, glib2.0 has become difficult to cross build. As a result, there
now is a desire to remove it from dependencies. cdebconf has such a
dependency as it is required via the essential package base-passed early
in the architecture bootstrap. In former times, pkg-config used to
depend on glib2.0 and hence getting rid of it was not important. With
pkgconf no longer depending on it, I'm hunting down users. cdebconf is
one of them. It turns out that glib2.0 is only actually used for the gtk
frontend that already has a build profile. Just adding the annotation
doens't just work as glib2.0 also pulls pkgconf, which is required for
autoreconf. Hence, my patch is making the pkgconf dependency explicit.

Bug#1040224: cdebconf: confmodule cannot be sourced by scripts that use `set -u`

2023-07-03 Thread Gioele Barabucci

Package: cdebconf
Version: 0.270
Tags: patch

Dear cdebconf maintainers,

cdebconf's `confmodule` cannot be sourced by scripts that turned on
strict variable handling via `set -u`, similarly to what is reported in
#369953 for classic debconf.

A patch to fix this this problem can be found at
https://salsa.debian.org/installer-team/cdebconf/-/merge_requests/21
(extracted from
https://salsa.debian.org/installer-team/cdebconf/-/merge_requests/19).

Bug#1040216: cdebconf: confmodule: Erranous behaviour if IFS does not start with a space during db_*

2023-07-03 Thread Gioele Barabucci

Package: cdebconf
Version: 0.270
Tags: patch

Dear cdebconf maintainers,

in confmodule, the command arguments are passed to cdebconf via

IFS=' ' printf "%s\n" "$*"

That command-local assignment of IFS affects the way printf works, but
not the way in which "$*" is expanded by the shell: "$*" will be still
expanded using the IFS of the calling shell.

Example of this fault behavior:

$ dash -c 'IFS="."; set -- a b c; IFS=" " printf "%s\n" "$*"'
a.b.c.

This means that any db_foo command will fail if the calling shell's IFS
does not start with a space, e.g. `IFS=$'\n'; while read foo; do ...
do_foo ...; done`.

A patch to fix this this issue is available at
https://salsa.debian.org/installer-team/cdebconf/-/merge_requests/20

(extracted from
https://salsa.debian.org/installer-team/cdebconf/-/merge_requests/19)

Bug#1025133: cdebconf: task selection is ignored with d-i in speech synthesis mode

2022-11-29 Thread Arnaud Rebillout
Package: cdebconf
Version: 0.265
Severity: normal
User: de...@kali.org
Usertags: origin-kali
X-Debbugs-Cc: sthiba...@debian.org

Dear Maintainer,

Short story: task selection is ignored in speech synthesis mode. This is
due to a regression in the cdebconf text frontend. The issue is easily
fixed, and I propose the following patch:
https://salsa.debian.org/installer-team/cdebconf/-/merge_requests/18

Longer story: the issue is easy to reproduce, just fire the debian
installer (daily build), select speech synthesis install, and when comes
the time to select the tasks, select something that is not the default.
For example, I select '1 4 10 11 12', and then pretty much nothing gets
installed. After reboot, there is just a console. `dpkg -l | wc -l`
tells me that 256 packages are installed. No desktop environment.

It's possible to see the issue with `DEBCONF_DEBUG=.` on the kernel
cmdline. The offending part of the syslog:

  Nov 30 00:36:23 debconf: --> GET tasksel/first
  Nov 30 00:36:23 debconf: <-- 0
  Nov 30 00:36:23 in-target: debconf (developer): < (passthrough) 0
  Nov 30 00:36:23 in-target: debconf (developer): Got "" for tasksel/first

The second line shouldn't be empty.

I CC Samuel, as he reworked the text frontend lately, it will be
straightforward for him to review and ack my patch (or fix it
differently, at your preference Samuel).

The issue was originally reported against Kali Linux:
<https://bugs.kali.org/view.php?id=7999>

Thanks!

Arnaud

Package: cdebconf
Version: 0.84
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

this package is uninstallable because it depends on libpango, which
depends on debconf, which conflicts with cdebconf

(maybe this is intended, because of the package description, which
advises against the installation of the package :-)

Package: cdebconf
Version: 0.260

In 2007 cdebconf has been "temporarily" made to depend on debconf «to
avoid anyone breaking their systems by removing debconf, which
dependencies now allow». [1]

Now, 15 years and various Debian releases later, all packages in the
base system depend on some variation of `debconf | debconf-2.0`.

This hard-dependence can now be removed.

I commented on
https://salsa.debian.org/pkg-debconf/debconf/-/merge_requests/11. While
I don't have a fundamental objection to it (and indeed have made some
attempts towards the same goal in the distant past), and while I
definitely applaud attempts to make progress here, I don't think we
should try to do it to a deadline.

The confmodule-level issues I raised can probably be dealt with
relatively easily (though given that they weren't spotted beforehand, I
suspect there is a bit of a QA gap here). However, if we're looking at
getting cdebconf going fully in installed systems, then somebody really
needs to be committing to figuring out full cdebconf compatibility for
all the various random features that aren't needed in d-i but that at
least some people will be relying on in the installed system - the full
range of frontends, databases, protocol details, and so on. We don't
even have things like frontend name compatibility where cdebconf has
"close enough" frontends to debconf's at the moment; in my mind that
would be part of (almost certainly not all of) a bare minimum of
compatibility here.

I understand that a prototype implementation doesn't strictly need all
this stuff for minimal functionality, especially if there isn't much
user interaction involved, and so it looks like having cdebconf-only
installed systems is just a few patches away. However, as soon as it
starts to be possible to install cdebconf-only systems, people will
start trying to do so and expect us to support the results, and are
likely to complain about the gaps. So I don't think this can be done
before the freeze (and honestly I think there's enough to do that me
replying more promptly wouldn't have made a significant difference to
that), but there's definitely stuff for people to get their teeth into
if they want to make progress on this goal that's been open since at
least 2003.

Hmm, so it seems this bug/MR is not as trivial as it looked like.

Is there the needed support/interest from involved parties to get this done

Opinions/comments?

Success in using cdebconf alone to bootstrap VMs

2022-08-28 Thread Gioele Barabucci

Dear debconf and cdebconf maintainers,

you probably have seen the bugs reports [1] and the MRs [2,3] that I
recently opened related to the creation and the use of `debconf-common`.

With these changes [4,5,6] applied (and a few unrelated changes) I have
been able to mmdebootstrap a number of VMs in which classic debconf is
not used at all, neither at installation time nor afterward.

I'm confident that a debconf-free unstable for base systems could be
achieved before the freeze with little effort.

Bug#1006492: cdebconf should not depend on debconf

2022-02-26 Thread Gioele Barabucci

Package: cdebconf
Version: 0.260

In 2007 cdebconf has been "temporarily" made to depend on debconf «to
avoid anyone breaking their systems by removing debconf, which
dependencies now allow». [1]

Now, 15 years and various Debian releases later, all packages in the
base system depend on some variation of `debconf | debconf-2.0`.

This hard-dependence can now be removed.

Subject: Skipping disk erase on Debian text-based installation

Hi all,

I wonder if we can avoid disk erase process during debian text-based
installation?

This process can take hours and it can be skipped on GUI based installation.
Unfortunately it is not accessible :)

- End forwarded message -

Put another way, the text frontend does not seem to be providing a way
to interrupt steps (control-c doesn't work), we would need it at the
very least to be able to interrupt the crypt step.

Bug#998424: cdebconf-text-udeb: Making steps interruptible

Subject: Skipping disk erase on Debian text-based installation

Hi all,

I wonder if we can avoid disk erase process during debian text-based
installation?

This process can take hours and it can be skipped on GUI based installation.
Unfortunately it is not accessible :)

- End forwarded message -

Put another way, the text frontend does not seem to be providing a way
to interrupt steps (control-c doesn't work), we would need it at the
very least to be able to interrupt the crypt step.

Comments/Problems:

I booted the graphical installer from debian.exe in expert mode so I
could install sid and use one of the daily images.

The /etc/grub.d/30_otheros that was generated did not allow me to boot
Windows. Simply changing (hd0,0) to (hd0,1) fixed this. Looks like grub2
uses 1-based partition indexes instead of 0-based ones like grub1 did.

Despite choosing the desktop task in the tasksel section and a gnome
desktop in debian.exe, I didn't get a desktop login manager installed
and a graphical login started up. Looking at the tasks in aptitude seems
to show that gdm is only present in the Xfce desktop environment task.

Thirdly my mouse is a serial mouse and there didn't seem to be any
obvious way to use it. The computer has a PS2 mouse port, but I don't
have a PS2 mouse for this computer. It is on /dev/ttyS1 rather than S0
due to the positions of cables, usb sockets and stuff.

I can retry the install as often as needed, since I'm just using a spare
partition for it and am not using that partition for anything else.

When enabling rescue mode, the banner isn't including the usual “Rescue
mode” label at start-up. Switching to any language enables it, though.
Going back to English afterwards gives the proper message. So I suspect
that's really a one-time issue while loading the first time. The text
installer doesn't seem to suffer from this, so I'm filing this bug
report against cdebconf-gtk-udeb without further investigation for the
time being.

I've also reproduced this with a 7.4 netinst image, using graphical
rescue mode:

Hi,

currently we have a logo defined by:
| #define LOGO_IMAGE_PATH \
| BASE_IMAGE_PATH "/logo_installer.png"

In a bug report against rootskel-gtk (bug number is pending), I suggested
we improve support for theme=dark, especially on the banner side. That'll
likely include shipping an extra logo, so a little less of hardcoding will
probably be needed at that point.

Opening this bug report as a placeholder for now.

I think I forgot about that bug report (having a See reference for
#696969 only in the changelog), but that was addressed long ago in:

commit a209703c314604238f0c03c528b8dc4d0bfb9eb5
Author: Cyril Brulebois
Date: Fri Feb 28 20:38:38 2014 +0300

Add support for loading an alternate banner when the GTK theme name is
"dark" (Closes: #740358).

Fall back to the regular one if it's not available (See: #696969).

Justification: renders package unusable
X-Debbugs-Cc: debian-boot@lists.debian.org

Hi,

In the “better late than never” department… I've completed a debugging session
that shows that upgrading libpango1.0-udeb from 1.42.4-8 to 1.44.7-3 hangs the
installer in various situations.

Interestingly, it doesn't *always* do that.

 - I know for sure this upgrade is responsible for the rescue mode
breakage *under some locales* tracked at:
 https://bugs.debian.org/987377

e.g. getting a shell into the system to be rescued works fine in
French or in German, but not in English (which hasn't any crazy fonts
or glyphs compared to the two other ones).

 - It seems to a kind user performing many tests that this could be
linked to the actual hardware configuration:
 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=987377#54

(See the “For short […]” conclusion, it's priceless.)

I'll be trying to get more results from Étienne.

 - I'm *not yet* certain this also triggers direct failures for Netinst
images for several languages, tracked at:
 https://bugs.debian.org/987449

but I have a rather strong suspicion, as mentioned in:
 https://bugs.debian.org/987377#59

I'll try to confirm this in the next few days.

Chris Hofstaedtler provided some perf data, which might help figure out
what's happening for someone who's knowledgeable about pango internals:
  https://bugs.debian.org/987449#15

Please keep debian-boot@lists.debian.org in the loop when replying, and
thanks for your help!

If a library like Pango is using the structured logging API in GLib 2.50+,
its logging messages are not caught by cdebconf-gtk's log handler.

Patch attached, also available at

Subject: [PATCH] gtk: Capture new-style GLib structured logging messages under
 d-i

GLib 2.50 replaced the non-machine-readable, text-based logging that
uses g_log_set_default_handler() with a more structured logging
framework inspired by systemd-journal. Each library can either use the
structured or unstructured logging framework; unstructured messages are
received by structured log handlers, but the opposite is not true.

For the purposes of this debconf frontend, the interesting libraries
include GLib and Pango (which use structured logging) and GTK 2
(which does not). As a result, GLib and Pango debug messages did not
go to the syslog in d-i; now they do.

Hi,

The banner in the graphical installer doesn't get the “Rescue mode”
label at start-up. It seems the information message hasn't been received
yet when the first call to handle_exposed_banner (cdebconf gtk frontend)
happens, so one has to select a language or switch to another vt back
and forth to get the message displayed. That doesn't happen with the
text rescue mode, so it's likely a cdebconf gtk frontend bug, filing
accordingly.

This is seen in sid but also with 9.2 installation images.

   * Capture new-style GLib structured logging messages, ensuring that we
stop losing messages generated by libraries using that structured
logging (ie. GLib and Pango) instead of the old text-based logging
 (i.e. GTK 2) (Closes: #988589).
   * Postpone adding text to GtkTextView until GTK has done initial layout,
to avoid running into an infinite loop that would result in only the
title being displayed, and a hang of the installer (Closes: #988787).
This fixes a number of scenarios including:
 - Hang before offering a shell in rescue mode [en] (Closes: #987377).
 - Hang immediately with Sinhala and other languages (Closes: #987449).
 - Hang in various places with Swedish (mirror selection or package
   manager configuration).

   * Huge thanks to Simon McVittie for the incredible support!
   * Align the display of info messages (e.g. “Rescue mode”) to the right
again, since Debian (logo and name) is back on the left side with the
 Homeworld theme.
   * Implement workaround to ensure info messages (e.g. “Rescue mode”) get
displayed on the banner on the start-up screen (Closes: #882804).

Do I understand correctly that Ubuntu now builds all packages with the
noudeb build-profile, and therefore this change is no longer necessary
if the package is instead made to respect the noudeb build-profile using
the patch from #983518?

If a library like Pango is using the structured logging API in GLib 2.50+,
its logging messages are not caught by cdebconf-gtk's log handler.

Patch attached, also available at

With a regular mini.iso (cdebconf-gtk-udeb built against GTK+2), on the
start-up screen, the label is missing; switching to a VT and back gets
us the needed refresh and label; without the VT switch, proceeding to
the next screen is sufficient to get it as well.

With a patched mini.iso (cdebconf-gtk-udeb built against GTK+3), the
label is missing as well; the VT switch dance gets it back; but NOT
going to the next screen.

This happened a while ago.

However, since we're already in soft freeze, a GTK 3 port of the graphical
installer interface is clearly not something to start on right now -
so I think this has to slip to Debian 12.

Release team: I think #887649 is going to need to be bullseye-ignore.

This looks like a nice plan, thanks for the heads-up!

One way to resolve this might be to build the vte2.91 udeb with
-static-libstdc++, which makes it about 200K larger than it would
otherwise have been, but avoids needing a 1.5M shared libstdc++. vte
exports a C ABI, and only uses C++ internally.

We need to upload a new vte2.91 to experimental anyway, so I'm going
to try this - d-i doesn't currently use that udeb anyway, so there's
nothing to lose by trying it.

Bug#967287: cdebconf-entropy: depends on deprecated GTK 2

2020-08-04 Thread smcv
Source: cdebconf-entropy
Severity: normal
User: pkg-gnome-maintain...@lists.alioth.debian.org
Usertags: gtk2 oldlibs
Control: block 947713 by -1

This package has Build-Depends on GTK 2 (libgtk2.0-dev), or produces
binary packages with a Depends on GTK 2.

GTK 2 was superseded by GTK 3 in 2011 (see
<https://bugs.debian.org/947713>). It no longer receives any significant
upstream maintenance, and in particular does not get feature development
for new features like UI scaling on high-pixel-density displays (HiDPI)
and native Wayland support. GTK 3 is in maintenance mode and GTK 4 is
approaching release, so it seems like a good time to be thinking about
minimizing the amount of GTK 2 in the archive.

GTK 2 is used by some important productivity applications like GIMP, and
has also historically been a popular UI toolkit for proprietary software
that we can't change, so perhaps removing GTK 2 from Debian will never be
feasible. However, it has reached the point where a dependency on it is
a bug - not a release-critical bug, and not a bug that can necessarily
be fixed quickly, but a piece of technical debt that maintainers should
be aware of.

A porting guide is provided in the GTK 3 documentation:
https://developer.gnome.org/gtk3/stable/migrating.html

Some libraries (for example libgtkspell0) expose GTK as part of their
API/ABI, in which case removing the deprecated dependency requires
breaking API/ABI. For these libraries, in many cases there will already
be a corresponding GTK 3 version (for example libgtkspell3-3-0), in which
case the GTK 2-based library should probably be deprecated or removed
itself. If there is no GTK 3 equivalent, of a GTK 2-based library,
maintainers should talk to the dependent library's upstream developers
about whether the dependent library should break API/ABI and switch
to GTK 3, or whether the dependent library should itself be deprecated
or removed.

A few packages extend GTK 2 by providing plugins (theme engines, input
methods, etc.) or themes, for example ibus and mate-themes. If these
packages deliberately support GTK 2 even though it is deprecated, and
they also support GTK 3, then it is appropriate to mark this mass-filed
bug as wontfix for now. I have tried to exclude these packages from
the mass-bug-filing, but I probably missed some of them.

Regards,
smcv

Bug#947085: cdebconf: Please omit cdebconf-{gtk,newt}-udeb on Ubuntu/i386

2019-12-20 Thread Steve Langasek
Package: cdebconf
Version: 0.250
Severity: minor
Tags: patch
User: ubuntu-de...@lists.ubuntu.com
Usertags: origin-ubuntu focal ubuntu-patch

Dear maintainers,

In Ubuntu, we are in the process of moving the i386 architecture to a
compatibility-only layer on amd64. We are keeping cdebconf on i386 because
it is required by base-passwd, but cdebconf-{gtk,newt}-udeb are built from
this source package and depend on packages we otherwise have no reason to
keep around (rootskel-gtk, di-utils-terminfo).

We would like to drop these udebs rather than keeping them around in the
Ubuntu archive and uninstallable. Would you please consider applying the
attached patch, or something like it, to omit building these binary packages
on Ubuntu?

Thanks for considering,

Package: cdebconf
Version: 0.160
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

When cdebconf is enabled, the cups postinst script dies with exit
status 15 (confirmed against cups versions 1.5.2-5, 1.5.2-8, and
1.5.2-9). Unsetting DEBCONF_USE_CDEBCONF to fall back to debconf
allows the package to install correctly. I locally repackaged cups
to add "set -x" to the postinst script and obtained the following
output, which may be useful in debugging:

> Setting up cups (1.5.2-9~debug0) ...
> + dpkg-maintscript-helper rm_conffile

My apologies if this would be more appropriately filed under the cups
package; feel free to reassign if that is the case.

Christian Perrier has retired, so can't work on
the cdebconf-entropy package anymore (at least with this address).

We are tracking their status in the MIA team and would like to ask you
to remove them from the Uploaders list of the package so we can close
that part of the file.

(If the person is listed as Maintainer, what we are asking is to please
step in as a new maintainer.)

Thanks.
