I will start working on it this coming weekend (July 20th).

not true, pump is the smallest of them all. the switch was made for a
couple nebulous `it doesn't werk for me' reports, as dan said. pump
generally worked fine on potato bootfloppies.

fix pump and use it on all archs.

there are just a few servers that pump won't work with for whatever
reason.

i only test with bootp. it works in potato, not in woody.

such as dhcp-client's broken initscript that must be removed if it is
to stay in woody's base...

It didn't work with boot-floppies, see bts#94176. In addition to i386,
it didn't work on -- you guessed it -- powerpc (my motivation to add
dhcp-client support). Actually, dhcp-client works fine on my powerpc
box using a dhcp host. The problems appears to be bootp related, but
I'm sure Ethan will fill you in.

As for switching between pump and dhcp-client, just change the extract
files accordingly -- dbootstrap should support whichever it finds.

Both of these packages seem to have annoying, long-standing bugs
associated with them.

Please, do that. We had no good reason aside from a few "it doesn't
work for me" reports, as I recall. Using an obsolete version of
dhcp-client deliberately is just bad news.

How hard can it be to make pump work?
I'm tempted to grab a copy of RFC 2131 and RFC 2132 and
fix pump so it works... What exaxtly is the problem with
pump that caused us to switch?

Well, how hard can it be to make dhcp-client 2.0 work on powerpc? Has anybody
investigated what the actual problem is?

cause I was curious what was meant by huge:
$ dpkg -x dhcp-client_2.0pl5-5_i386.deb  2.0pl5-5
$ dpkg -x dhcp-client_3.0beta2RC10-1_i386.deb 3.0beta2RC10
$ tar -czf dhcp.3.gz 3.0beta2RC10/sbin/dhclient 3.0beta2RC10/etc/dhclient
$ tar -czf dhcp.2.gz 2.0pl5-5/sbin/dhclient 2.0pl5-5/etc/dhclient-script
$ ls -la dhcp.*.gz
-rw-rw-r--1 davidw   users2169 Jul 15 09:30 dhcp.2.gz
-rw-rw-r--1 davidw   users  153921 Jul 15 09:29 dhcp.3.gz
$
All the size is in the 3.0 binary, not the script, btw.

umm, yea, that's '*huge*!'

I think we have a problem. boot-floppies switched from pump (iirc) to
dhcp-client because the latter was better and in fact smaller than the
former. However, dhcp-client does apparently not work on powerpc (see
#103813).

The maintainer, Eloy Paris, thinks that the problem might be fixed in
the new 3.0 (now in beta) release. BUT:

So in fact the new version might be too big for boot-floppies. And
the old version doesn't work on powerpc... so?
