Re: Debian GNU/(k)NetBSD and sparc32 hardware?

2007-07-30 Thread Gianluca Bonetti
l could be read in the sources and debian/control.
There are traces inclusion/exclusion of packages in debian/control
"Depends:" lines, knetbsd-i386, netbsd-i386, netbsd-alpha, I also found
a netbsd-mips somewhere.
Since I have found that main problem is GNU libc vs. NetBSD libc I
think that it could be usefule to have a couple of features, if there
are not yet (maybe I don't know how to do, so please explain thanks! :))
1) support for wildcards like netbsd-*, netbsd-%, netbsd-all, or
something like this.
Otherwise if some work is done for netbsd-i386 and netbsd-alpha, every
package has to be checked againg for netbsd-mips and netbsd-sparc and
so on.

2) architecture exclusion in debian/control "Architecture:" lines.
Like:
Architecture: any [!netbsd-alpha !netbsd-i386 !netbsd-sparc]
or
Architecture: any [!netbsd-*]

I hope that my post could be useful to Debian platform improvement and
I will report other information as they come, if there is interest in
it.

greetings kfreebsd list!

2014-11-10 Thread Gianluca Bonetti
Hello everyone

I am new to the list and to kFreeBSD, but I am long time Debian user,
Debian sysadm for various private and cloud servers, and sincere
Debian lover.
I know kFreeBSD since many years, but I only tried the Ging live cd years ago.
In the last days I gained more and more interest in kFreeBSD, since
someone says that it is in bad shape and the risk is that it will be
quitted.
On the other hand, Linux they say is in good shape... I don't think so.
Given the current state of Linux ecosystem, I feel that a kFreeBSD
based Debian is a plan-b for everything.

I tried kFreeBSD x86_64, both Wheezy and Jessie (weekly iso) on
virtual machines and on real hardware.
I have to say that kFreeBSD seems to me in very good shape, fully
working, installed smoothly on real hardware like on VMs.
Jessie is really in better shape, since has Iceweasel, LibreOffice,
JDK and much more software.
I put it as first and only OS on my work desktop (where I do all my
daytime office routines, but not development)

On IRC channel, Christopher told that current bugs are listed here
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?users=debian-bsd@lists.debian.org
Is this the list of all the bugs that kFreeBSD has right now?
I will start to make some troubleshooting with non building packages.
I have some experience in installing from alien sources and packaging
in debian way, so I'd like to try.

If you have some advice, I'll be glad to read on list or private email.
Thank you
Best regards
Gianluca

kfreebsd repositories vanished after Jessie official release

2015-04-26 Thread Gianluca Bonetti
Hello people!

Today, I cannot update my Debian/kFreeBSD systems (1 phisical, 1 VM)
because the repositories vanished after the official release of
Jessie.
What are the repositories to use from now on?
I googled, but found nothing.
I also took a look at debian.net and debian-ports.org but there aren't.

Thank you
Best regards

2015-04-26 Thread Gianluca Bonetti
Hello Steven
Thank you for the feedback

I hope that all the compiled packages has been migrated somewhere so
the repository will be online soon.
If I ever thought it could happen, I would have done a mirror of that
on an OVH VPS.

When will the repository be online?
kFreeBSD was in pretty good shape until two days ago.
This seems quite a boycott to a project of very high value.

Thank you

Re: kfreebsd repositories vanished after Jessie official release

2015-04-26 Thread Gianluca Bonetti
Great Steven

The new httpredir works perfectly and I can update my kFreeBSD systems.

To be honest, I also tried in a VM a daily sid CD image which I took here
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/sid_d-i/arch-latest/kfreebsd-amd64/list-cd/

I have to say that the kernel (kfreebsd-10.1-0-amd64.gz) that has been
installed does not work for updating by apt-get
I had to manually copy another kfreebsd-10.1-0-amd64.gz + modules from
a working and updated system to be able to apt-get from a fresh
installed system.
apt-get didn't work after install, but wget did (I downloaded the
required debs by wget from a local network http server)

I suspect that the kernel in the installer has to be updated.

By the way, is there any "to-do-list" for kFreeBSD so that external
developers could help in the project?

Best regards

Re: kfreebsd repositories vanished after Jessie official release

2015-04-26 Thread Gianluca Bonetti
I did a fresh install from daily installer on a VirtualBox VM.
Install goes fine, base system, grub, reboot.
At reboot, I put the new sources.list in the system, and try an apt-get update
I get no errors, but "waiting for headers" until forever.

apt-get sits waiting for http headers until forever, but wget works on
http, at least on local net server.
I first tried to update apt package by downloading the package on
another system, then wgetting on the fresh install VM.
apt package updated, still not working.
So I updated the kfreebsd-image also by downloading on another system,
then wgetting on fresh VM.
Install updated kfreebsd-image-10.1, reboot, apt-get update works.

I can reply on my system to have a second test, if you like.

Re: releasing jessie-kfreebsd (was: kfreebsd IRC meeting?)

2016-03-25 Thread Gianluca Bonetti
Hello
I tested installation from the provided ISO.
Installation process runs fine, also on ZFS and ZFS on root.

Main problem is with APT mirrors, seems that many are not working.
httpredir mirror should be selected as default for kfreebsd

There is also a problem when changing keyboard language.
For example, I select italian layout.
The problem is related to filesystem mount at startup.
I use a separate / /usr /var /home since the beginning of time

/etc/init.d/keyboard-setup fails ate startup because runs before mountall
/etc/init.d/keyboard-setup calls /bin/setupcon
/bin/setupcon calls in turn /usr/bin/ckbcomp which is not available at
startup, before mountall

I am sure not many people will run kfreebsd on separate /usr, but I think
that setupcon and ckbcomp which both belong to console-setup should live in
same directory

For all the rest, congratulations for great work!
kFreeBSD is in amazing good shape!

Re: Problems instaling kFreeBSD in amd64 VM

2016-11-07 Thread Gianluca Bonetti
Hello Rich

I have already installed kFreeBSD on a VM, but using VirtualBox.
I am using VirtualBox both on desktop and on servers.
If you need, the MATE Desktop Environment is fully working on kFreeBSD.

As for installing kFreeBSD, I have a couple of upgraded installations from
7.x to 8.x
I should try with an 8.x installer and see what happens.

You can download these ISO:

Debian 8.4 Installer RC3
http://cdimage.debian.org/mirror/cdimage/archive/jessie_di_rc3/kfreebsd-amd64/iso-cd/

Debian 8.4 Installer from last Jenkins build
http://jenkins.kfreebsd.eu/jenkins/job/debian-installer_jessie-kfreebsd/ws/

Debian 7.11 Installer then apt-get upgrade to 8.x
http://cdimage.debian.org/mirror/cdimage/archive/latest-oldstable/kfreebsd-amd64/iso-cd/
(for apt-get upgrade you'll need an up to date apt/sources.list)

I will also have a try with these iso and do an install from scratch, to
test what happens.

Best regards

Re: Problems instaling kFreeBSD in amd64 VM

2016-11-08 Thread Gianluca Bonetti
Hi Rich

Here it is...

# Debian GNU/kFreeBSD "Jessie" 8.x amd64
deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian jessie-kfreebsd main contrib non-free
deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian jessie-updates main contrib non-free
deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian jessie-backports main contrib
non-free
deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian-security jessie-kfreebsd/updates
main contrib non-free

Last try today, I upgraded all packages and worked like a charm.

It happened in past, and could happen again, that httpredir.debian.org
points out to a mirror which has decided not to host a copy of
"jessie-kfreebsd".
This is a bad behavior of the mirror, but we cannot impose it to do.
The simplest solution, is to try again to apt-get install, as the next try
point out to another mirror and the majority of the mirrors now have
jessie-kfreebsd.

As a reminder for me, and hopefully for others googling around, I posted
this informations on my blog http://decadence.it/debian-gnu/kfreebsd

Enjoy the upgrade! ;)

Hello Herbert

You have to modify /etc/apt/sources.list to point to the current
repositories.

deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian jessie-kfreebsd main
deb http://security.debian.org/ jessie-kfreebsd/updates main
deb-src http://httpredir.debian.org/debian jessie-kfreebsd main
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ jessie-kfreebsd/updates main

Just edit the the file and apt-get update && apt-get install

Re: internet connection less then 5 minutes

2016-11-28 Thread Gianluca Bonetti
You have some networking troubles.

You can try to manually configure the network by ifconfig / route add
default / resolf.conf or edit /etc/network/interfaces to set a static
address and default route.
The process is like on any other debian-like.

Then you have to update the whole system.
It seems you are suffering of some bugs in the kernel or basic userland.

Re: Future of kFreeBSD in Debian unstable

2018-01-05 Thread Gianluca Bonetti
Hello
I am not a debian developer, and I just use kFreeBSD on a VMs for testing
purposes.

I think it is a project worth keeping alive, even if not 100% workable.
Dumping it away is a great waste of previous and precious work on
portability and kernel abstraction.
kFreeBSD 7 was stable enough to be used as desktop, as I did on a secondary
box, real hardware.

Given the stats from https://popcon.debian.org/ it seems that kFreeBSD is
still running on 38 active machines (not counting my 2 VMs, as I don't run
them 24x7)
38 kFreeBSD boxes are more than hurd-i386, s390*, ppc64*.
mips64el is an official port, and is running only on one machine, so it
seems that there is more interest in unofficial kFreeBSD than official
mips64el

Just my personal opinion, as a debian user.
