is site-dependent, the latter is patch-dependent.

Package: svn-buildpackage

I just tried an svn-inject on a package maradns that contains symlinks.

Since my Subversion version 1.1.4 can handle symlinks, I see no reason

I have no idea what's causing this, and the strace didn't really tell me
anything. It looked like gtimer just wasn't getting any X events, but I
don't know what would cause that. I'm afraid I'm about at my limits of
understanding X and GTK programming here.

> 2. I can now reliably reproduce the "writing huge window heights" bug.
> This happens every time I kill gtimer by right clicking on the close
> window icon (regardless of whether gtimer had first got into the
> unresponsive but still alive state described above).

This, on the other hand, I think I can do something about. I can't
reproduce this with fvwm, which makes me wonder how Enlightenment is
killing the application and why it's different. When I force-quit in
fvwm, I just get:

Gdk-ERROR **: X connection to :0.1 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).

But regardless, I think I see the erroneous code. Would you be willing to
build a new version of the package with the following patch and see if it
takes care of the bad window size problem? You can do this with:

apt-get build-dep gtimer
apt-get source gtimer

and then drop this patch into debian/patches/26_309779-bad-size.patch in
the unpacked source tree and build with debuild or the like. If that's
more hacking on Debian packages than you're comfortable with, let me know,
and I can build a test version of the package for you.

The relevent policy section is 10.7.3
(http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-files.html#s10.7.3) which
states "Configuration file handling must conform to the following
behavior: local changes must be preserved during a package upgrade,
and"

It also states "These scripts...must not ask unnecessary questions
(particularly during upgrades), and otherwise be good citizens."

Hope this helps,

Bug#311439: crossfire: non-free file lib/adm/map_check

2005-05-31 Thread Kari Pahula
Package: crossfire
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 2.2.1

The file lib/adm/map_check has in it:
#!/usr/bin/perl

# (C) Copyright Markus Weber, 1994. All rights reserved.
# Permission is granted to use, copy, and modify for non-commercial use.

This violates DFSG.

Removing this file wouldn't affect other parts of crossfire in any
way, so this can be fixed by simply removing the offending file and
repackaging the .orig.tar.gz.

Bug#308668: xscreensaver: confirmed, yet on Intel P4 (32 bit)

2005-05-31 Thread Rick Bradley
Package: xscreensaver
Version: 4.21-3
Followup-For: Bug #308668

I am seeing the same problem here. I can do everything with
xscreensaver, except it never triggers by itself given a set timeout.
All the screen savers run properly when I preview them or say "blank
screen now". If I leave the machine sitting it will never start. I
have tried leaving the xscreensaver-demo configuration screen up, or
taking it down (click the "close" window decoration, or hit "Quit" in
the File menu). I've tried restarting the daemon from the menu. I've
tried killing it and starting it up from scratch. Etc.

This hurts because the Ski IA64 simulator invokes xterm with -S/96 or

Bug#293503: hplip: No scanning from HP2110

2005-05-31 Thread William McKee
Package: hplip
Version: 0.9.2-2
Followup-For: Bug #293503

Scanning had been working fine until a recent update of hplip. Sorry I don't
know which one precisely. sane-find-scanner could find my scanner but xsane
could not.

Checking /etc/sane.d/dll.conf showed that both hpoj and hplip were enabled. I
disabled hpoj. Unfortunately that did not fix my problem. Further digging
revealed that hplip had been installed into both /usr/hplip and /usr/lib/hplip.
I suspect the former may have been from a custom install of hplip before the
Debian package was prepared. I found that /etc/init.d/hplip was using the
/usr/hplip path for the HPSSDDIR variable. Changing that path to /usr/lib/hplip
and restarting /etc/init.d/hplip did the trick.

Bug#311435: Strange characters destroy the xdiskusage output

2005-05-31 Thread D. Goel
Package: xdiskusage
Version: 1.48-4
Severity: normal

I also tried this with version 1.48-5.

xdiskusage -a ~/ causes this error "output does not look like du output"

I have no funny mounts in ~/

Digging, the problem seems to happen because some lines in the du
output changes the terminal's character encoding. (pardon my poor
terminology) causing the terminal output to become all funny.
Specifically, some file in xdiskusage -a ~/.gnome/accels/ causes this.
(This directory tends to contain weirdly named files).

If I type du . in this directory, the terminal's output becomes funny
-- presumably, the same problem gets passed on to xdiskusage.

Bug#309950: tar_1.15.1-1_i386 does not parse -f option

2005-05-31 Thread Jason Wies
package tar
severity 309950 normal
thanks

I agree with Mike, this is not a minor problem as it:

- Breaks compatibility with stable and testing
- Does not act like other GNU programs
- Is not documented in Debian changelog or tar changelog

Thankfully it looks a fix for this was included upstream right after
the 1.15.1 release, but there has not been a release since then.

Bdale, would you consider including the small patch from the bug-tar
message below? I can verify it works when patched against 1.15.1.

http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-tar/2005-01/msg00012.html

Thanks,
Jason

Bug#311434: debuild --preserve-envvar PATH doesn't work.

2005-05-31 Thread Peter Chubb

Package: devscripts
Version: 2.8.14

This is free software; see the GNU General Public Licence version 2
or later for copying conditions. There is NO warranty.

Usage: dpkg-buildpackage [options]

The manual says:

The only way to prevent PATH from being reset is to specify a
 --preserve-envvar PATH option.

(I want to use ccache and distcc to speed package building, so want to
pass these environment variables:
PATH=/usr/lib/ccache:$PATH
MAKEFLAGS=-j17
DISTCC_HOSTS="localhost/1 tutti/8 eisbock/8"
CCACHE_PREFIX=distcc

I have DEBUILD_PRESERVE_ENV=yes in the environment as well. The full
invocation is:
env PATH=/usr/lib/ccache:$PATH MAKEFLAGS=-j17 \
DISTCC_HOSTS="localhost/1 tutti/8 eisbock/8" \
CCACHE_PREFIX=distcc debuild -nc --preserve-envvar PATH

in the xfree86 tree

Without -nc it seems to work.

Everything works now and I am very sorry for wasting your time. Thank

Bug#311433: xgamma: does not report correct gamma when gamma wasn't set with xgamma

2005-05-31 Thread Jeff Bonham
Package: xbase-clients
Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-12.0.1
Severity: normal

When xgamma is run with no options it displays the current red, green
and blue gamma as far as it knows. This is often wrong however, since
other programs (such as games running under WINE or SDL applications)
may set screen gamma without using xgamma to do it. When xgamma is run
in these instances it displays what the screen gamma was set to before
it was changed, which is wrong.

To reproduce:
- use xgamma to set the screen gamma to any value, say x
- run a third-party program that uses libraries such as WINE or SDL to
change the screen gamma, to, say, y
- switch out of the third-party program and run 'xgamma'. It will report
  x instead of y

If the program exits and resets the screen gamma to the value it was
before running, xgamma will once again be correct. However, if the
third-party program crashes, the gamma will not be set back and xgamma
will report incorrect values until the gamma is manually set using
xgamma.

2005-05-31 Thread Joel Johnson

Package: pathological
Version: 1.1.3-5
Severity: important

The latest patch introduced in the -5 package breaks navigating the main menu
with the mouse. When clicking on menu entries (instead of keyboard navigation,
which works as expected) the option is properly toggled, then the game is
started, even if only trying to toggle music/fullscreen, etc. Also, after
launching the game in this way, after completing the first level, the first
level must be replayed, after which the game progresses normally.

I will look into it and submit a clean patch, but may I strongly suggest that
the package be reverted back to 1.1.3-4 for sarge release (if you can push it
through).

Please send the contents of /etc/inetd.conf to the bug.

Maybe the syslog, kern.log or daemon.log provide more info on what
happened. Could you check?

Bug#311429: mutt: Mutt does DNS lookups multiple times per session

2005-05-31 Thread Justin Pryzby
Package: mutt
Version: 1.5.9-2
Severity: minor
Tags: minor

I sometimes use mutt to read pop mail (in a not discouraged way, I
think: mutt -f pop://[EMAIL PROTECTED]; different from 'G': retrieve pop
mail).

It occasionally checks for new messages; it seems to do so at the
first user activity with the message index after 30 seconds or so of
not having checked for new mail.

Each time, it does "Looking up _host_", where _host_ is my POP server.
It seems to me that it could save the IP resulting from the initial
gethostbyname(), and never do another lookup. Unless this behaviour
is the result of some more generalized positive behavious.

Bug#308968: severity 308968 grave

2005-05-31 Thread Caspar Bothmer
Ok, mozilla-locale-de-at will find its way into sarge. So I will have
the following situation:

Debian could easily provide an enigmail-enhanced _and_ localized mozilla
but I have to choose between an enigmail-enhanced or a localized mozilla.

Your package is ready as you said. So why don't you give it a try?

locale-gen calls localedef, which uses lockf64 for file locking. I don't
know if it is supposed to work over NFS, but it might be a likely
culprit to investigate.

This is a pretty serious breakage, but unfortunately this will be
difficult to reproduce from the package list alone.

Before embarking in a wild goose chase, how did you install woody ?

Here what is the expected message:

Setting up netbase (4.21) ...
Installing new version of config file /etc/protocols ...
Installing new version of config file /etc/init.d/networking ...
Installing new version of config file /etc/services ...
Installing new version of config file /etc/rpc ...

However netbase postinst script does not do anything that could break
the network, and I don't expect a network breakage to cause the
typescript to be truncated.

Do you have a firewall installed on this box?

Cheers,

Bug#311423: ia32-libs: libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3 is missing

2005-05-31 Thread Maximilian Wilhelm
Package: ia32-libs
Version: 1.4
Severity: important

When starting IBM Tivoli Storage Manager, I get the error
"error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3:
cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"

$ dpkg -S libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3
ia32-libs: /emul/ia32-linux/usr/lib/libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3

$ ls -l /emul/ia32-linux/usr/lib/libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3
ls: /emul/ia32-linux/usr/lib/libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3: No such file or directory

The mystic thing is, that I could use TSM before and the daemon is still
running and seems to be working.

I guess, that one of the last upgrades let this break.

Bug#311424: \usepackage{epstopdf} does not create pdf files

2005-05-31 Thread Frank Breitling

Package: tetex-extra
Version: 2.0.2c-7

When I include \usepackage{epstopdf} in my latex file in order to create PDF
files from EPS files automatically on the fly I receive the following error

Error: pdflatex (file plot.pdf): cannot find image file

The plot.eps file is not created, although I can create it manually with
"epstopdf plots.eps"

The same problem is reported here:
http://mailman.mit.edu/pipermail/macpartners/2005-January/000779.html

The test.tex file which reproduces the error is given below:

Frankly, I don't know. This is the first laptop on which I'm using

Or perhaps make it configurable? A syntax like

testmii eth0,up lan

could mean that before testing the mii, the script has to bring up the
network card (and wait a short while (about a second) for the hardware
to finish its negotiation), whereas it would default to the current
behaviour if that option would not be specified.

Bug#310618: rhythmbox: Cannot find music on iPod due to case sensitivity problems

2005-05-31 Thread Claudio Bernardini
I started having the same problem that prevent me to listen to my music
some days ago with Ubuntu Hoary.

A mount command show:
/dev/sda1 on /media/IPOD-1GB type vfat
(rw,nosuid,nodev,sync,noatime,quiet,uid=1000,gid=1000,umask=077,iocharset=utf8)

This mount is done automatically by the system.

I can confirm that unmounting the iPod and mounting again by hand the
with the option "shortname=mixed" works and you can listen to your music
in Rhythmbox.

Haploview is designed to simplify and expedite the process of haplotype
analysis by providing a common interface to several tasks relating
to such analyses. Haploview currently allows users to examine block
structures, generate haplotypes in these blocks, run association
 tests,
and save the data in a number of formats. All functionalities are
 highly customizable.

The problem with haploview is its use of Java2 features that are not
yet implemented by free tools. Anybody willing to help out sponsoring

Yes, I know. This needs some TLC but it's not getting it until after
sarge goes out the door (as I said to myself over a year ago :P ).

It just needs the entire thing except for the output of defaultdomain to
be moved into config. The /etc/defaultdomain parsing needs to be done
otherwise the package will trash user configuration each time it's
upgraded (and on reconfiguration but it's easier to get away with it
then).

I think it's useful to also display the prompt on reconfiguration if
the message is going to be displayed at all - if people are trying to
reconfigure NIS they may be trying to get it to start using the NIS
configuration and a kick to go do the manual stuff is likely to be
helpful.

> If you want patches for this, let me know. I'm also interested in
> seeing things like #231808 fixed;

To be honest I'm not terribly convinced it's worth adding much to the
debconf configuration of the NIS package. The server configuration
option seems plausible given the startup failures reported but as noted
in the log for that bug properly configuring a NIS client involves
messing with critical system files like /etc/passwd and friends which
just has bad idea written all over it. This means that you're mostly
going to need something external to the package (be it a sysadmin with a
text editor or something more automated) to set up a NIS client for use.

Something like RedHat's authconfig which provides an integrated
interface to the configuration of the system databases and
authentication seems like it would provide a much more usable user
interface as well as standing more chance of being robust.

> I can provide initial patches if necessary.

I wouldn't bother - writing the patches isn't the problem here.

Very strange errors. Above files are part of:

kdelibs-data: /etc/kde3/ui/ui_standards.rc
kdelibs-data: /etc/kde3/kdebug.areas
digikam: /usr/share/apps/digikam/digikamimagewindowui.rc

Isn't kdelibs-data installed on your system?
Does any other KDE app work on your system? Are you using a
KDE session when this happens? Or something else like GNOME?

lkcd & lcrash have had a long history of getting code contributed to them
from various people. However, I can assure you that just because there are
some ifdefs for certain architects does not imply that those architectures
are supported or will even compile.

> Would it be possible to support more arches? Like alpha and
> amd64.

Eventually yes. There is active development upstream for lcrash and lkcd.
Right now we are working on a major re-write in the 7.X.X development branch,
which involves completely re-architecting how lkcd & lcrash work at a core
level, additional architectures will come after we complete most of this
work.

> PS: I find the ppc64 weird since powerpc itself doesn't seem to be

Not really sure, I don't have any ppc hardware to test on. powerpc might
work or it might not. Since it's not spelled out upstream, and I don't have
powerpc hardware to test crash dumps on I'm going to stick with not. Again,
once we finish the major 7.X.X dev work upstream more functionality/archs
will come.

Not a fix for sarge.

But I look forward to participating in the discussion on this issue at
next debconf. I believe it is possible to solve both inside Debian and
(until all developers involved in the changes needed are convinced that
they should take on that additional maintainance) unofficially for CDDs
as well.

Not true.

Yes, I am primarily talking about packages that is not officially
released by Debian.

Also, it concerns me if Skolelinux takes packages "officially released
by Debian" but as single packages only and from a "testing" og
"unstable" package pool, hinting that the package has not yet been
tested well together with the other packages forming a "distribution".

In the case of the "lazily maintained" lessdisks you include a package
that is not packaged for Debian at all.

In the case of lessdisks I may not ever package 0.6.2c officially for
Debian, because of trouble upgrading between 0.n versions. So you may
end up with a Skolelinux/sarge that cannot seamlessly be upgraded to
Skolelinux/etch - but who cares...

There's more to packaging than a working _install_ process, Finn-Arne.

For the record: I am not pissed at my package getting "overruled" (but
yes, it _does_ piss me off being called lazy, so keep doing that if you
want to annoy me, Finn-Arne). I am concerned about the possible
consequenses of Skolelinux being promoted as "all Debian" when it is not
the case. And I believe it hurts Skolelinux developers that their
violating Debian Policy is treated lightly: They then believe the
problem is not serious.

Skolelinux developers believe their distro can be used as an "easier
install process" also for standard Debian. But use Skolelinux as Debian
installer, remove the debian-edu-* packages, and off you go (with
possible ticking bombs we then need to weed out whenever the bugreport
show up for all those packages being messed with in a policy-violating way).

Why it is bombs? Because the local admin "didn't do it" The "Debian
system" (actually: the Skolelinux hacked derivation of a Debian system,
but that's not how it is promoted) messed around with itself, and then
didn't preserve integrity later on (like if Skolelinux changed symlinks
and the package then later overwrites skolelinux derived files instead
of its own files).

Bug#311419: Only load images over a USB cable once.

2005-05-31 Thread Daniel Burrows
Package: digikam
Version: 0.7.2-4
Severity: wishlist

I noticed when copying some images from a USB mass storage camera using
digikam that digikam loaded the images twice: once to calculate the
thumbnails, then again to actually copy them. As it takes several minutes to
transfer a full memory card off my camera, I would appreciate it if digikam
could cache the images when it reads them to generate thumbnails, then just
write the cached copies out to disk at the appropriate time. (e.g.,
speculatively copy them into a temporary directory within the digikam
pictures directory, then use rename(2) to move them into place when the user
decides where to put them).

Bug#311416: nis: preseeding and nis' usage of debconf do not get along

2005-05-31 Thread Andres Salomon
Package: nis
Version: 3.13-2

Hi,

I'm trying to automate setup of various packages using debconf/d-i
preseeding. Unfortunately, nis is a bit problematic, as it happily
clobbers nis/domain and nis/not-yet-configured debconf values that have
been set before the package is configured.

First, the postinst checks whether /etc/defaultdomain is set, and if
not, resets nis/domain, sets the default value to `hostname --fqdn`, and
prompts the user for the value.

>From debconf-devel(7):
*Avoid asking questions in the postinst. Instead, the config
script should ask questions using debconf, so that pre‐configu‐
   ration will work.

What this probably should do instead is, in the config script, prompt
the user (using `hostname --fqdn` as the default if nis/domain is not
already set). In the postinst, get this value and
overwrite /etc/defaultdomain with it. This way, people can
dpkg-reconfigure nis and actually be able to change this value.

Ditto for nis/not-yet-configured, which shouldn't care whether the
machine has actually be configured yet; the note should be displayed
when the package is first installed, and never again. People who can
figure out how to configure nis before installing the package can also
figure out how to preseed the note to not display, if they find it
annoying.

If you want patches for this, let me know. I'm also interested in
seeing things like #231808 fixed; I can provide initial patches if
necessary.

(wild guess, but there were lots of usb fixes).
might be nice to test before bug upstream.

(loud thinking:
the current -rc should probably leave in experimental.
may relaunch that idea..)

Bug#311300: ignores "syslog only" config parameter and writes to log files /var/log/samba/log.[sn]mbd anyway

2005-05-31 Thread Jesse Molina

Hi!

I believe that you are correct -- I noticed that startup and shutdown
info was recorded to the files, but normal messages were being directed
to syslog as they should be.

I very briefly looked a the samba bugzilla listings but didn't see
anything.

I concur that this should go upstream, but I wanted to be sure to bug
under my distro first. Should you or I pursue the issue
with the maintainers?

Thanks for your attention

Bug#273293: Still alive

Still get this error message with 2.6.8-2-k7-smp

I've tried the nobiospnp setting with out any change.
Also tried pnpbios=off and pci=noacpi

This bug is still around - I would be glad to provide any info and run any
tests.

I am trying to track down a problem with a nvidia card that I don't think is
related to this, but it sure would be nice to eliminate this variable.

Bug#276091: Fixed by using nvidia dri ver

2005-05-31 Thread Karl Schmidt
I think this is a 'nv' bug - if I use the 'nvidia' driver it goes away (but I
get a unrelated bug).

'nv' is the open source nvidia driver - 'nvidia' is the driver supplied by
nvidia.

If I change my x11 settings from nv to nvida the problem goes away.

Not sure what package owns this bug - nv kernel driver - xserver-xfree8 etc -
the bug is alive and needs to be brought to someones attention.

I want to run a graphics card with modest gl performance but open sourced
drivers - any clues?

Bug#311368: initdb fails, template1 not created

Hi Aart!

Two methods:

  dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/postgresql_7.4.7-6_i386.deb

or
  apt-get install postgresql=7.4.7-6

Both methods should happily downgrade a package.
