Bug#320078: whiptail is unable to handle special characters not present in current locale

2005-07-26 Thread Alastair McKinstry
tags 320078 wontfix
thanks

I'm tagging this 'wontfix' as its unfixable.

The problem is that 'characters not in the current locale' are garbage
bytes as far as _any_ software is concerned: if you enter some
'non-locale character' whiptail gets a bunch of uninterpretable bytes.
it can't even reliably figure out what was the last 'real' character
before these. whiptail is not unique in this: it is true of all
software. Its just that whiptail is in the front of the pipeline to
receive and display them.

The solution is to ensure such garbage characters don't get entered into
whiptail, etc. (or other X programs). Use a non C locale, in particular
use UTF-8, and make sure all programs produce UTF-8.

Regards
Alastair

Being the proud new owner of a 15" powerbook, I would be most
interested in seeing pbbuttonsd well taken care of. I'm going to look
at the current bug list this week and do some triage to prove I'm

This patch is incorrect. $(getconf LFS_CFLAGS) already evaluates to
-D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 on architectures where it's required. On
architectures where it's not required, this define is known to have
incorrect side effects for some functions.

Bug#320121: /usr/include/semaphore.h's use of the 'restrict' keyword

2005-07-26 Thread Julien PUYDT

Package: hurd-dev
Version: 20050513-3

Hi,

I tried to compile some app on GNU/Hurd, but had a problem with
semaphore.h's use of 'restrict' keyword: it is a C99 keyword, and hence
makes gcc (Debian 1:3.3.6-4) a little unhappy. I was said on #hurdfr to
replace restrict with __restrict, to see if it made things better. It
does, but I'm not sure it is a right fix.

Hope it helps,

JP

Hi Frank,

I don't really use this program anymore and want to concentrate on other

Since it is non-free (due to some dubios license extensions) I will

As far as I understand the non-XXL-Version (1.4.x) *is* GPLed and
therefore free.
I just saw that the current version 1.4.2 is indeed in non-free (never
thought about this before), but as I remember from some postings on the
mailing list upstream always told everyone that 1.4.x is under the GPL.
This needs to be clarified, of course.

That would be really sad since I use it regularly, as it is
a really nice tool. Would you still be able to sponsor me

The fault occurs in send_probe, at:

seems to be an alignment problem; removing __attribute__((packed)) from

I could create a NEWS.Debian that would be displayed if people have
apt-listchanges installed, however, this would be an abuse of
NEWS.Debian. README.Debian is the right place for this, I've added the
following to the description about it tho, what do you think?

Some parts of nsis cannot be built on debian because of non-free
requirements. Please see the following file for more information:
 /usr/share/doc/nsis/README.Debian

Package: sysklogd
Version: 1.4.1-17

Justification: causes non-serious data loss

After upgrading our main syslog server to sarge, I found that some log files
were not updating. This was traced to the fact that large filesystem support

I only have access to one ppc64 machine which is connected to the
internet by a dialup home DSL connection. It is not possible to
access that machine remotely. But I heard rumors that IBM gives
accounts on some of their new ppc64 machines for developing and
testing purposes.

If you send me a patch and tell me what to do I could also try to make
some tests myself and report the results back to you.

Are you sure the package rcfile takes priority? Looking at the code

Hi,

This sounds like you are seeing two problems.

1. Your root device hasn't been detected properly and

2. The script isn't doing proper error checking

Lets focus on problem 1.

Could you take a look at what modules are needed to access your root
partition using kernel-image-2.6.8-1-386? You should be able to
work this out using dmsg and lsmod. Then compare this to the modules
that are included in your initrd image and its /loadmodules script.

If you can't get anywhere could you send the output of dmsg and lsmod
from kernel-image-2.6.8-1-386, and from the initrd image of
kernel-image-2.6.8-2-386, find . and the loadmodules script.

Thanks

The latest versions of Ferite do not properly build from source

Bug#320116: jack: Tag files without renaming them.

2005-07-26 Thread Philipp Weis
Package: jack
Version: 3.1.1-3
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

I just came accross a freedb entry which is so long that the resulting
file name would be too long. I get the following error message:

| Tagging. *error* Cannot rename "track_01.ogg" to "Béla Bartók- Krystian

| Grimaud - Pierre Boulez - 01 - Krystian Zimerman - Chicago Symphony
| Orchestra - Pierre Boulez % Allegro moderato - Allegro.ogg" (Filename
| is too long or has unusable characters)

There is no obvious way to tell jack to tag these files without renaming them.
I got it to work with '--rename-ftm "%n"', but something like '--rename=no'
would be nicer. Another nice option would be to crop filenames that are too
long.

I'll have access to this CD again in about a week and will get back to
you. Also, I am sure that there are no data tracks on this CD.

I listened to that tape eight times. I listened over and over and heard the same thing again and again. Ms. Meyers said, 'These kids may need to hear a word many times (perhaps 72 times) before they ever say a word. A computer can be patient and say it the same way every time.' Now I understood. I was not patient enough. I did not allow the student to hear the words over and over. I was interrupting their learning by interjecting, when they were totally engrossed in what they were doing. I was asking questions they were not ready to answer. They were just learning language. They didn't have the answers yet..

Bug#320115: qiv: background setting in bug #294293 causes X session to become useless

2005-07-26 Thread Tim Connors
Package: qiv
Version: 2.0-3
Severity: grave
Justification: causes non-serious data loss

I tried to reopen 294293, but obviously don't know how to do this
correctly...

This causes major breakage in case of fullscreen (you can't destroy a
window when it is the root window!) - renders the X session useless
(see bug 197335). I am marking this grave, because causing the loss
of an X session is data loss.

This bug may well have been there in previous versions of qiv, but it
was hidden - I have pressed y many a time (accidentally and not), and
gotten a background on my root window (using fvwm, not gnome), and it
worked just fine. Now, if I or one of my cats accidentally press 'y',
then I am stuffed. I *really* don't like losing my X session to a
window that can't be moved or lowered or closed or destroyed. I have
verified that I can go back to version 2.0-3, and the problem
disappears. I am using Xorg currently, but the problem also existed
under Xfree86.

Quite right; sorry about that. IMHO fvwm should differ in its
appearance from X-without-a-window-manager (and not print an "<>"
message) in its default Debian configuration, but filing a wishlist bug
seems like it would be sort of argumentative, so I'll just go back to
what I was doing. :-) Thanks for your quick response; sorry for my

I suspect the problem here is that other diplay managers set a certain dpi
when starting X, whereas kdm by default lets X autodetect the dpi. (Which
is a great thing, I think.)

Bug#320114: vte_terminal_set_colors doesn't accept 24 colors

2005-07-26 Thread Ethan Glasser-Camp
Package: libvte-dev
Version: 0.11.13-2

The documentation for the VTE widget says, under set_colors:

"palette_size must be either 0, 8, 16, or 24."

However, on vte.c, line 6692, in vte_terminal_set_colors, you can see the
assertion:

g_return_if_fail((palette_size == 0) ||
 (palette_size == 8) ||
 (palette_size == 16) ||
 (palette_size ==
G_N_ELEMENTS(terminal->pvt->palette)));

if palette_size is 24, you get a warning:

CRITICAL **: vte_terminal_set_colors: assertion `(palette_size == 0) ||
(palette_size == 8) || (palette_size == 16) || (palette_size ==
G_N_ELEMENTS(terminal->pvt->palette))' failed

You can work around this, because if you know how VteTerminal stores its
palette, you can just create a 30-color palette with all the colors in the right
place, but this is a hack.

I think that the return_if_fail should have another condition added, which is
palette_size == 24.

Bug#320113: libopenh323-1.15.3c2: Shouldn't Conflict & Replace previous ABI/API versions

2005-07-26 Thread Faidon Liambotis
Package: libopenh323-1.15.3c2
Severity: important

Hi,
libopenh323 shouldn't conflict with previous ABI/API versions of the
library.

To do that, it shouldn't provide usr/lib/libopenh323.so.1, as this will
be a file conflict between the current and the older versions (older
versions incorrectly provided that file too).
This symlink should be moved to the -dev package, where it belongs.

A nearly-identical bug report has been filled against libpt: #320105

Regards,
Faidon

Bug#320111: Chopping a sentence in more than one part is bad for localization efforts

2005-07-26 Thread Antti-Juhani Kaijanaho
Package: man-db
Version: 2.4.3-1
Severity: minor
Tags: l10n

(This is really a separate issue from my other report. Honest:)

In a Finnish locale, "man 2 foo" says

Sovellukselle foo ei ole opastesivua in section 2

I'm sure you'll be able to spot the strangeness without knowing Finnish:
a part of that message is untranslated.

While an untranslated message is undoubtedly the translator's fault, in
this case I also see a programmer error. The simple rule for a
programmer is, the smallest unit of text you should ever mark for
translation is a complete sentence (with some exceptions, which do not
apply here). In this case, which is easily verified by looking at
ltrace output, you construct that message by calling printf twice:

fprintf(0xb7fd0f60, "Sovellukselle %s ei ole opastesi"..., "foo") = 36
dcgettext(0, 0x805a2f0, 5, 0xb7eb1f38, 0xb7ea9438) = 0x805a2f0
fprintf(0xb7fd0f60, " in section %s\n", "2") = 14

You really shouldn't do that. Sentence fragments are in general
impossible to translate correctly: the translator might need to put the
words that say "in section %s" in the middle of the message, instead of
in the end, like in the English. The words thta say "in section %s" may
also depend on the sentential context, which the translator cannot see
because you have chopped the sentence into parts.

While some languages may be able to cope with this in some cases, it
isn't always possible, and it often creates bad language, which gives a
bad name to localized free software. Please fix this!

Bug#320108: Finnish translation nitpick

2005-07-26 Thread Antti-Juhani Kaijanaho
Package: man-db
Version: 2.4.3-1
Severity: minor
Tags: l10n

When no manual page for a system call can be found, man says (in the
Finnish locale) "Sovellukselle foo ei ole opastesivua", literally
translated as 'The application foo has no help page'. While the choice
of words may be appropriate for section 1 and section 8 pages, it is not
for other sections (and you really don't know if the man page being
looked would be in section 1 or 8, or not, when you don't find the
page).

I appreciate that this is a rather difficult translation problem (and
hence I don't have a suggestion for a correction), but the current
wording is suboptimal.

Please give the jabber user his own group. Currently, jabber is in nogroup, so
files such as config files or certificates have to be owned by the jabber user

If the jabber user had a jabber group, then such sensitive files could owned by

other users any access to the files at all.

At our last installfest, at least one new user was confused by the lack

Is there still any intention to add the 'Continue' buttons back?

Right! I'm wrong =(
vamps allow you to reduce the size of MPEG2 streams...
It could be used for making a backup of video-Dvd.

This program is not clean documented, but it is nedded by k9copy (I sent

Bug#320105: libpt-1.8.3c2: Shouldn't Conflict & Replace previous ABI/API versions

2005-07-26 Thread Faidon Liambotis
Package: libpt-1.8.3c2
Severity: important

Hi,
libpt shouldn't conflict with previous ABI/API versions of the
library.

To do that, it shouldn't provide /usr/lib/libpt.so.1, as this will be a
file conflict between the current and the older versions (older versions
incorrectly provided that file too).
This symlink should be moved to the -dev package, where it belongs.

A similar bug appears in libopenh323, I'll fill a bug there too.

There is a reason why the package gets renamed when the ABI changes...

Regards,
Faidon

Bug#320106: fvwm: Doesn't start when no configuration exists

2005-07-26 Thread Andrew Moise
Package: fvwm
Version: 2.5.130.CVS.2005.07.19.01-1
Severity: normal

When I installed fvwm and then chose it (via editing .xinitrc) as my
window manager, it didn't work. It turned out that it was complaining
(and then, apparently, silently refusing to exit) about missing
configuration files, like so:

[FVWM][main]: <> Cannot read startup config file, tried:
/home/moise/.fvwm/config
/usr/share/fvwm/config
/home/moise/.fvwm/.fvwm2rc
/home/moise/.fvwm2rc
/usr/share/fvwm/.fvwm2rc
/usr/share/fvwm/system.fvwm2rc
/etc/X11/fvwm/system.fvwm2rc

IMHO the fvwm package should ship with a standard configuration file
in a place that the binary can find it. I understand that there are
upgrade issues from older versions of fvwm with existing configuration
files. I also did find the example in
/use/share/doc/fvwm/sample.fvwmrc/system.fvwm2rc.gz, copy it to my
homedir, gunzip it, rename it, and rerun fvwm, at which point it
worked, but that seems like an unnecessary hassle (especially after
having to take some time to figure out why it was refusing to do
anything useful in the first place).

There is one version of MySQL 4.1 and 5.0 still waiting for uploading
(ftp-master seems to be still down) which IIRC has modified Debconf entries,
too... so I'm unsure if this one fits at all.

Bug#320104: ssh: Xforwarding is disabled and is not a debconf option either

2005-07-26 Thread Luke Kenneth Casson Leighton
Package: ssh
Version: 1:3.8.1p1-8.sarge.4
Severity: normal

1) disabling of X forwarding on the server end is pointless as
there is absolutely zero risk at the server end.

2) ssh -X is a choice made by the client: they take the risk.
(and having the ssh_config option ForwardX11 no is a GOOD
idea in this respect and is very sensible - unlike X11Forwarding no
in sshd_config)

please either enable X11forwarding Yes in sshd_config, or provide
a debconf option to say yes or no and if it makes you happy put the
default option as no.

Ubuntu loads acpid at the normal time; what we do is load some acpi-related
kernel modules from the initrd.

ok. I made a quick check, but it didn't crash for me.

The easy way to check is if the "TrueType Fonts" is checked in the
right-control-mouse menu. You could have some resource set to start
xterm in that mode, but normally it uses the bitmap fonts. (I was
checking this to see if there was some odd configuration detail that
wasn't apparent).

I haven't switched window managers in the recent past; I'm pretty sure
that it used to work with blackbox 0.70.0-4. It does work with fvwm,
but seeing as I use blackbox that doesn't do _me_ much good. :-)
As I said, I believe that this happened when I switched from
xserver-xfree86 to xserver-xorg (though it could still ultimately be
blackbox's fault, of course...).

AFAICS all of them are in front. I can lower windows to my heart's
content and they never go behind the xine window. If I raise the xine
window, it does come to the front, but moving the mouse around the xine
window (without clicking anything) will sometimes cause other windows to
jump back in front of it.

Bug#320103: botched /usr/share/doc transition; /usr/doc link remains

2005-07-26 Thread Joey Hess
Package: tf
Version: 1:4.0s1-16
Severity: normal

I installed tf on this laptop circa 2003. I'm current with unstable and
I still have a /usr/doc link:

lrwxrwxrwx   1 root root   15 Feb  9  2003 tf -> ../share/doc/tf/

Apparently the postinst made this back in 2003, but the prerm was broken
and never removed it, and when you removed the link creation in the
postinst, the link was left behind on any systems that had tf installed
at the time.

Please complete the transition properly by adding a version check in the
postinst that deletes the old link if it's still around.

The only link with gnumach is a Build-Depends and that was not

2005-07-26 Thread Matthias Andree
Strange. I tried to reproduce this with 6.2.5 (vanilla) and 6.2.6-pre8,
but failed. Reading the code, fetchmail should try to send a bounce, but
no hints to this in your files - is fetchmail crashing on your system,
signal for instance?

If so, please try to obtain a stack backtrace, preferably of the
6.2.6-pre8 version. You may need to run fetchmail under gdb or catchsegv
supervision or valgrind if you have that.

I have a quite similar configuration (with I believe irrelevant
differences, but I haven't checked all of them), and fetchmail sends the
bounce

acpi and acpid are scheduled for installation during hw-detect if
directory /proc/acpi is present in the installer. This was implemented
_after_ the sarge release, so only happens if a daily installer image is
used. It happens for any installation method.
The syslog should show a message "Detected acpi support, installing
acpi/acpid.".

As /proc/acpi is only present with 2.6 kernels, acpi and acpid are not
automatically installed by d-i for installations using a 2.4 kernel.

The 'apt-install' script is used in d-i to either directly install a
package (if the base system is already setup) or schedule a package for
later installation (before that time). In any case, acpid will only be
run _after_ the system is rebooted.
See hw-detect in svn (or during installation) for the actual code.

Mikael,

Very keen to use shared libraries where ever possible.

Although a little difficult until your packages are actually within the Debian
unstable environment.

Are you packages ready to be uploaded? I would be happy to sponsor the upload,
but I don't think they build on a current unstable box, also I think
iaxclient has been upgraded upstream from your packages.

Have you sync'ed the latest upstream release?

Mark

Actually, I don't build a shared iaxclient library since iaxclient
is under development and the API is still changing to much.
But I'm linking with shared versions of gsm and portaudio (not in
Debian unstable yet).

The portaudio version used is v18.1, which is the stable version and
it's also needed by OpenOffice.org2 (currently in experimental).

I have updated iaxclient from the current CVS and made a new release
(iaxclient_0.0+cvs20050725-1). I had to use the local copy of speex in
iaxclient for this release, since iaxclient currently depends on a patch
that hasn't been applied by upstream yet.

I'm building my packages in a pbuilder chroot running sid, and it seems
to work.

I think both my iaxclient and portaudio packages are ready and I would
be glad if you could sponsor. You find my packages on my web server[1]
and Debian mentors[2].

Thanks.

If it still fails, please use the patch from #319901 and see if that
helps.

If not, I'd also like to see the output of 'cdparanoia -Q' please.

Egon, thanks for the bug report and patch. We will incorporate this in
the next release of java-package, which should enter unstable within the
week. As none of us on the java-package team have ready access to
x86_64 architecture, these types of wishlist bugs are quite helpful.

What's listed as "calculated id" is the ID of the CD. Can you suggest
better wording to make this clearer?

Everything up to here is "normal". These modules are not supported by your
hardware but do no harm. Just blacklist them for both discover and
hotplug and you will be fine.

> Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual adress

This one looks very much like a problem I've seen in several installation
reports. [1] gives the best summary and status of the problem and has a
workaround. Could you check that's the same issue?

Basic problem: we really need someone who has the hardware and is willing
to test solutions. Could you do that?
The first step would be: check if the problem still occur with the 2.6.12
kernel. The second step would be: get in touch with the ALSA people and
try to get the problem solved (maybe testing with latest drivers from CVS
first).

Cheers,
FJP

(P.S. Please give a little bit more of the console output next time; it
was just chance that I recognized the issue from the two relevant lines.)

Bug#320090: nmh: FTBFS on some filesystems and with sarge's flex

2005-07-26 Thread Reid W Barton
Package: nmh
Version: 1.1-release-3
Severity: important
Justification: fails to build from source

Summary: There is an intermediate build file sbr/dtimep.c included in
the source package, which should be removed. Also, the rule to
generate this file in sbr/Makefile.in should be changed from

dtimep.c: dtimep.lex
$(LEX) -nt $< > $@

to

dtimep.c: dtimep.lex
$(LEX) -o $@ $<

This fixes two problems:
 * flex 2.5.31-31 (the version of sarge) treats '-n' as a no-op option,
   but treats the following 't' as an argument, which is not allowed;
 * by using '-o $@' instead of '-t > $@', we avoid creating an empty
file when the flex invocation fails, which could cause a future 'make'
to try to use the now-empty dtimep.c.

This issue is masked when unpacking the source archive onto a
filesystem like ext3 which doesn't store fractional timestamps. The
files sbr/dtimep.c and sbr/dtimep.lex in the archive have timestamps
of 2003-10-24 20:17:23.671432146 and 2003-10-24 20:17:23.825410320
respectively, so when unpacked onto an ext3 filesystem, the timestamps
become equal and make doesn't try to rebuild sbr/dtimep.c. But when a
filesystem which stores fractional-second timestamps (such as AFS) is
used sbr/dtimep.c becomes older than sbr/dtimep.lex and thus make
does try to rebuild it.

Bug#320091: kernel-image-2.6.8-2-386: Boot fails with a syntax error in /scripts/ext3-add-journal.sh

2005-07-26 Thread Dustin Laurence
Package: kernel-image-2.6.8-2-386
Version: 2.6.8-16
Severity: important

I am currently running kernel-image-2.6.8-1-386 on this up-to-date
Debian Sarge system. That kernel seems to run fine. I attempted to
upgrade to kernel-image-2.6.8-2-386, but it fails to boot and does not
appear to even get as far as mounting /. These seem like the relevant
messages:

/scripts/ext3-add-journal.sh: 27: arith: syntax error: "0x"
/sbin/init: 426: arith: syntax error: "0x"
Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init!

but I don't know what scrolled out of sight first. Obviously I had to
copy them down by hand.

Not finding it on the system, I mounted the initrd files and found a
script named ext3-add-journal.sh, which I presume is the problem. They
are clearly different between the two kernel versions but the syntax
error doesn't make any obvious sense just from an inspection of the
script.

Any help or pointers for further investigation would be appreciated.

Dustin

Bug#320089: %r: count reverse virtual dependencies

2005-07-26 Thread Brian Kimball
Package: aptitude
Version: 0.2.15.9-3
Severity: minor

Hi, currently %r fails to count reverse dependencies via virtual
packages. For example, mawk's rdepends count is 0, but in actuality
base-files depends on it through the "awk" virtual package.

The consequence of this is that occasionally I go to delete a package
that I don't think I need (because %r shows 0 and I don't personally
want the package) and then all of a sudden I've got broken packages that
I have to investigate.

Thanks!

Bug#320095: aptitude: counts for reverse-recommends and reverse-suggests could be handy

2005-07-26 Thread Brian Kimball
Package: aptitude
Version: 0.2.15.9-3
Severity: wishlist

Hi again. I'm finally purging my aptitude thoughts. One more to go
after this. :-)

I find %r to be very useful in providing at-a-glance information as to
whether I need a package installed or not, especially when I don't know
much and don't particularly want to know much about a package.

%r doesn't quite provide the whole picture though: it doesn't tell me
at-a-glance if any other packages recommend or suggest a package, so
when I'm cleaning out unwanted packages I often find myself constantly
checking their reverse-dependency listings before hitting the purge
button. This process can get pretty tedious, especially when confronted
with the long reverse-dependency listings that I addressed in my other
wishlist.

If we had similar escapes for reverse-recommends and reverse-suggests we
would all be able to see immediately just how many other packages find
a particular package useful. No longer would we need to enter a new
screen for each and every package. Just scrolling through the package
listing would be enough.

You already have a lot of escapes already, so maybe %r could change to
displaying 5 characters: d/r/s. Those wishing to only see actual
reverse depends can limit the width to 1 character.

What do you think?

Thanks!

 Brian

Bug#320096: aptitude: package tagging status?

2005-07-26 Thread Brian Kimball
Package: aptitude
Version: 0.2.15.9-3

Hello once more. I see you have a package listing escape code reserved
for tagged packages. I for one would absolutely love the ability to tag
packages and have those tags saved between aptitude uses. Do you still
plan to implement tagging?

Thanks, and I hope I'm not nagging,

Bug#320088: dar: FTBFS on 64 bit arches: Using internal copy of gettext.

2005-07-26 Thread Kurt Roeckx
Package: dar
Version: 2.2.1-2
Severity: serious

Hi,

Dar is now failing to build on all 64 bit arches.
Configure fails to find the version of gettext in libc and ends
up building the internal version instead, and then fails when
linking, because it's also in libc.

The reason it failed:
configure:9855: checking for GNU gettext in libc
configure:9879: x86_64-linux-gnu-g++ -o conftest -g -O2
conftest.cc >&5
conftest.cc: In function 'int main()':
conftest.cc:95: error: cast from 'char*' to 'int' loses precision

This seems be caused by the new g++, which is more strict in
those things.

This seems to fix it:
- libtoolize --force --copy
- aclocal-1.9
- automake
- autoconf

Note that you'll have to take care of timestamp skew issues
(See autotools-dev documentation.)

PS: Your current libtool version seems to be a strange mix of
the 1.5.6 debian version and a 1.5.10.

--best only relates to high vs fast (with --fast) compression, not to
quality.

In theory, I think 'VBR' should be supported and %q should just refer
to compression rather than quality. However, that's currently not
possible because there's no -q option but only -0, -1, -2, ... options
which you cannot pass to flac via jack (there'd have to be a space
so you have 2 arguments). Maybe I'll fix this in the future.

Bug#320092: aptitude: provide more grouping and/or limits in reverse dependency listing

2005-07-26 Thread Brian Kimball
Package: aptitude
Version: 0.2.15.9-3
Severity: wishlist

Hi, sometimes while investigating a package's reverse dependency
listing it takes ages to scroll through the list (especially for some
libraries). It would be nice if by default it was grouped into first
"installed packages" that defaulted to an expanded list and then "not
installed packages" that remained closed but could obviously be expanded
by the user.

Limit functionality might come in handy also. If limits worked in those
screens then we could just quickly limit them to ~i when needed.

Thanks!

cool, thanks for your quick feedback.
great to hear about the d-i development. :)

the ubuntu bugs i was referring to are #489 and to a lesser extent #2341.
-> http://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/show_bug.cgi?id=489
so i reassign to initrd-tools that the fix wont get lost for the latter
initramfs-tools and to acpid, which is providing the much too late
/etc/rc2.d/S20acpid startup link aka "update-rc.d acpid defaults"

Sorry again! I admit to being a most negligent bug-reporter here.

I can tell you with certainty that (1) the problem occurred on several
CDs, not just one, and (2) none of the CDs had data tracks--they were
all just standard audio CDs. I will try it again now with the same CDs
and the most recent version of jack and let you know the result.

Probably, but IMHO that does not improve usability for newbies (and that's
what you were aiming at, right?). Having clearly labeled separate fields
would IMO make it simpler for new users.

> > - submitter e-mail
> > - maintainer e-mail

The first one is not (or should not be).
In my experience ,most users are not aware that they can search/list bugs
on their e-mail address because that option is non really obvious on the
current page. Most of the time (especially for older bugs) they will not
remember a bugnumber, and the package may have been changed by
reassigning. So looking for bugs based on e-mail should IMO be on the
simplified page.

I'm not quite happy with this but I suppose this is okay for now.
Unless Michael objects.

BTW, I don't agree that --best should be the default. We just
probably just leave whatever flac has as default and people can
overwrite it if they want. The same goes for -V.

You cannot just remove this. I've updated it.

Bug#320087: racoon-tool should load modules with modprobe instead of insmod

2005-07-26 Thread Aaron D. Johnson
Package: racoon
Version: 1:0.5.2-1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

"/etc/init.d/racoon start" is producing error messages like the
following on my system:
  insmod: error inserting '/lib/modules/2.6.12.3/kernel/crypto/crc32c.ko': -1
Unknown symbol in module
  insmod: error inserting '/lib/modules/2.6.12.3/kernel/net/ipv6/ipcomp6.ko':
-1 Unknown symbol in module

These errors come up because the crc32c and ipcomp6 kernel modules have
dependencies on other modules and insmod does not insert them. modprobe
does insert dependencies.

The attached patch to /usr/sbin/racoon-tool alters racoon-tool to use
/sbin/modprobe instead of /sbin/insmod to load kernel modules. Also,
"/sbin/modprobe -r" is used to remove modules instead of /sbin/rmmod.

Bug#316899: KDM overrides kde default settings

I can't reproduce this. Changing the fonts in the Control Center changes the
font sizes as you would expect. I suspect what you're finding is that when
you start KDE using 'startx' or xdm, it uses a setting of 100 dpi to render
fonts, whereas kdm tries to use DDC info to determine your monitor's 'true'
dpi, and sets your font sizes accordingly. Hence the observed differences
in font size between using kdm and not. You can force kdm to start KDE with
a certain dpi value by editing /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc; a setting of 100 would
probably return your fonts to the expected sizes.

If my theory is incorrect, let me know. Otherwise, if I don't hear from you,
I'll close this report.

Cheers,
Christopher Martin

acpid is already installed on all systems with acpi (and 2.6 kernels) by
hw-detect. In addition, unstable's tasksel installs it on any system

Bug#315024: cvsps: dynamically allocate the log buffer to prevent warning messages

2005-07-26 Thread David D. Kilzer
I believe the original patch that I submitted for this Debian bug may
have an off-by-one error when reallocating more space for a log message
that is longer than LOG_STR_MAX. In that case, I use the length of the
new message but don't add one to it (meaning that there will not be room
for the termination character). This line (which appears TWICE in the
patch):

logbufflen += (len > LOG_STR_MAX ? len : LOG_STR_MAX);

should probably be something like this (note '>' to '>=' change, too):

logbufflen += ((len+1) >= LOG_STR_MAX ? (len+1) : LOG_STR_MAX);

It's also somewhat inefficient because it guarantees that a new buffer
will have to be allocated the next time through the loop anyway. That's
a different issue, though.

This bug is fixed as a side-effect of the patch which I just submitted
for #319901 (the MSF offset fix). When jack computes the right
offsets, it still gets the size of the last track wrong; however, when
the offsets are right, the size information from cdparanoia is taken -
and that information is correct. (I haven't quite followed the path
to see why the cdparanoia information is taken in one case and not the
other but given that my previous patch mysteriously leads to the right
information being used, I don't particularly care.)

This short description is a bit long and it also leaves it unclear to me
what the program actually does. The verb evaporate means, according the
WordNet dictionary:

v 1: lose or cause to lose liquid by vaporization leaving a more
concentrated residue; "evaporate milk" syn: vaporize,
  vaporise
2: cause to change into a vapor; "The chemist evaporated the
   water" syn: vaporise
3: change into a vapor; "The water evaporated in front of our
   eyes" syn: vaporise

At a guess, does vamps make MPEG2 streams smaller?

I have another theory about this bug now. Do you know if by any
chance this track is followed by a data track? If so, I've probably
just committed a fix to SVN.

Bug#266052: jack: utf8 support: still not displayed right, falls over trying to id3 tag

That's fine. My apologies for not seeing your new message before,
though.

Yes, the problem is that there are currently no ncurses bindings for
Python which support UTF-8. I've had a fairly long discussion about
this with various people (see #279000) and someone might create such
bindings in the near future. Once this will happen, I'll switch jack
over to use it. (And yes, there is one minor cosmetic error related
to double-width chars that I'm aware of; I've fixed some already but
at least one more is there. I'll fix that eventually.)

OK, that's a real bug.

MP3 has (at least) two different type of tags, version 1 and version
2. Version 2 supports UTF8 and when you look at your file you should
see that it has been tagged properly. jack can also add version 1
tags and this is what broke in your case. I'll make it more robust.
Also, I think we should turn version 1 tags off by default.

Anyway, you can use the patch below or wait a for days for a new
package:

Bug#317025: cvs: loginfo fails: no such internal variable $

2005-07-26 Thread Mark Symonds

Hi all,

Just a quick top-reply here - am I correct in saying that loginfo is executed
as the UID that is running hte commit anyway? I say this because I removed
the $USER variable without :ext: and did this instead:

^somedirectory (echo "*+~--- OurProject --~!
+*";id;date;cat; (sleep 1; cd /home/vrooms/public_html;cvs -q
-d /home/cvsroot checkout aximize) &) >> $CVSROOT/CVSROOT/updatelog 2>&1

The above served well as a workaround; we ran into some perms issues but I
brute-forced it out of the way with a cronjob to chown -R everything. For
now, it is working.

Anyway just wanted to check in - hope debconf was great. :-)

Best

Chris, can you confirm this?

Either way, I don't think having acpid installed is enough, as long it
starts so late in bootup process. A long fsck run or a similar problem
before entering runlevel 2, and the problem appears again :-/

I don't know much about ACPI specification, but maybe it would be
possible to make the fans run at maximum speed when kernel boots, until
acpid starts (which would then turn them down according to whatever its
user-space policy says).

[insert emacs/vi bickering here]

MySQL is nice, but some of us use PostgreSQL.
Odds are, I'll end up writing this myself, but just in case someone
else beats me to the punch, or if I've overlooked an existing munin
plugin.
