Bug#325819: doesn't use all package properties (like descriptions) from default distribution
Package: synaptic Version: 0.57-2 Severity: normal Synaptic doesn't seem to honor Package upgrade behaviour (default distribution) to display package descriptions, at least when the default distribution is not the highest one. I am experiencing this behavior for all the packages I verified, that is gnumeric and ssh. I noticed the behavior when ssh was described as a transitional package on an Etch/Sid mix. Note that Default-Release is also set to testing. In case the behavior is intentional, remember that while a few description changes are fixes that apply to old versions, most (hopefully, anyway) are updates reflecting changes in the package. For example, seeing ssh described as a transitional package depending on openssh-client and openssh-server led me to believe I better try to install the real package I needed, which failed since unstable had broken dependencies for that one. When I understood the real problem, installing ssh through synaptic worked, installing the testing version as expected. Before sending this report, I realized that this may actually concern more package properties than just the description. The dependencies have a "Dependencies of the latest version" option, but maybe a general option for determining which distribution package properties must be taken from should be implemented. This bug was present in sarge's synaptic. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.8-2-386 Locale: LANG=fr_CA, LC_CTYPE=fr_CA (charmap=ISO-8859-1) Versions of packages synaptic depends on: ii apt [libapt-pkg-libc6.3- 0.5.28.6Advanced front-end for dpkg ii libatk1.0-0 1.10.1-2The ATK accessibility toolkit ii libc62.3.2.ds1-22GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libfontconfig1 2.3.2-1 generic font configuration library ii libfreetype6 2.1.7-2.4 FreeType 2 font engine, shared lib ii libgcc1 1:4.0.1-2 GCC support library ii libglade2-0 1:2.5.1-2 library to load .glade files at ru ii libglib2.0-0 2.6.5-1 The GLib library of C routines ii libgtk2.0-0 2.6.8-1 The GTK+ graphical user interface ii libncurses5 5.4-9 Shared libraries for terminal hand ii libpango1.0-01.8.2-1 Layout and rendering of internatio ii libstdc++5 1:3.3.6-7 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libvte4 1:0.11.13-2 Terminal emulator widget for GTK+ ii libx11-6 4.3.0.dfsg.1-14 X Window System protocol client li ii libxft2 2.1.7-1 FreeType-based font drawing librar ii libxml2 2.6.20-1GNOME XML library ii libxrender1 1:0.9.0-2 X Rendering Extension client libra ii scrollkeeper 0.3.14-10 A free electronic cataloging syste ii xlibs4.3.0.dfsg.1-14 X Keyboard Extension (XKB) configu ii zlib1g 1:1.2.2-4 compression library - runtime Versions of packages synaptic recommends: pn deborphan (no description available) ii gksu 1.3.0-1graphical frontend to su pn libgnome2-perl (no description available) -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". The work of manually bootstrapping ghc6 around libgmp is something that shouldn't be delayed any longer. It happens that thanks to the glibc maintainers choosing to push ppc64 support into the archive before glibc 2.3.5 is in testing, glibc, gcc-4.0, and gmp all have to go into testing together. If ghc6 and ghc5 aren't rebuilt against libgmp3c2 soon, then pretty much all haskell packages will need to be pulled out of testing in order to get things unstuck for etch. (That may happen regardless, in which case it's just a question of how long before ghc is eligible to get back in.) So Kurt, I think it would be a good idea if you did go ahead with an NMU here. Bug#325813: fftw: shared libraries must be linked with dependencies
Package: fftw Severity: serious Justification: Policy 10.2 fftw and its varient packages currently build shared libraries with rules like: cd mpi && gcc -shared -Wl,-soname \ -Wl,libfftw_mpi.so.$(version_major) \ -o .libs/libfftw_mpi.so.$(lib_version) sched.lo \ TOMS_transpose.lo transpose_mpi.lo fftwnd_mpi.lo fftw_mpi.lo The resulting shared library depends on the mpich shared library, but since that shared library isn't explicitly linked in the fftw rules, the dependency isn't encoded in the fftw library. This violates policy 10.2 and prevents shared library dependencies from working properly. This should be resolvable by adding the shared libraries that this library depends on to the link line, but I've not checked to be sure of exactly which libraries those are. Bug#323744: netpipe: must also be rebuilt for the mpich transition
Package: netpipe Followup-For: Bug #323744 In addition to the change of mpich package names, netpipe must also be rebuilt for the mpich C++ transition, since the shared library package has changed names. The patch previously submitted on this bug is incomplete; it leaves the binary package still depending on mpich, which no longer exists. It should instead depend on mpich-bin. Attached is a fixed patch. Please try to upload a new version as soon as possible, as all of mpich's dependencies have to be transitioned for mpich to move into testing. The kernel enables or disables many different things depending on the version of gcc to work around different issues. Because of this, the main kernel, and all kernel modules must be built with the exact same version of gcc, otherwise very bad things can happen. greg k-h -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#325807: xserver-xorg: Backport new evdev input driver
Package: xserver-xorg Severity: wishlist Tags: patch Hi, There is a new evdev input driver merged into upstream which works much better than the old system (at least for me trying to use a Apple Mighty Mouse on a IA64 system with udev, which I guess not many people do!) In general this input driver seems much better than the older version, which is not supported upstream. I removed the 053_lnx_evdev.diff, 054_lnx_evdev_mouse.diff and 055_lnx_evdev_keyboard.diff patches and added the attached, and rebuilt (this patch also adds a small patch to enable horizontal scrolling with my Mighty Mouse, see https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4316). I couldn't figure out how to get it in the packages with the MANIFEST stuff, but installing it by hand everything works as expected. It requires loading the module and changing the mouse line to have Driver "evdev" with the correct Device specifier. No need for the "Buttons" options, etc. Since upstream have decided this is the version to use and Debian has to make a transition one day anyway, maybe we could get a head start with this backport? -i [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.gelato.unsw.edu.au -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: ia64 Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.12.2 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C (charmap=ANSI_X3.4-1968) diff -urN xc-orig/config/cf/linux.cf xc/config/cf/linux.cf --- xc-orig/config/cf/linux.cf 2005-08-31 15:18:16.0 +1000 +++ xc/config/cf/linux.cf 2005-08-31 15:20:11.0 +1000 @@ -771,7 +771,7 @@ # define OSXInputDrivers1 /**/ # endif # if HasLinuxInput -# define OSXInputDrivers2 aiptek +# define OSXInputDrivers2 aiptek evdev # else # define OSXInputDrivers2 /**/ # endif diff -urN xc-orig/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/input/evdev/evdev.c xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/input/evdev/evdev.c --- xc-orig/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/input/evdev/evdev.c 1970-01-01 10:00:00.0 +1000 +++ xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/input/evdev/evdev.c 2005-08-31 15:19:23.0 +1000 @@ -0,0 +1,743 @@ +/* + * Copyright © 2004 Red Hat, Inc. + * + * Permission to use, copy, modify, distribute, and sell this software + * and its documentation for any purpose is hereby granted without + * fee, provided that the above copyright notice appear in all copies + * and that both that copyright notice and this permission notice + * appear in supporting documentation, and that the name of Red Hat + * not be used in advertising or publicity pertaining to distribution + * of the software without specific, written prior permission. Bug#325142: Don't understand, seems like circular issue
Thomas, I guess I don't follow... udev 0.060 and to some extent greater depends on kernel 2.6.12 or greater. Not sure whether something up to .068 fixed this or not. kernel-source 2.6.11 is unstable and 2.6.8 is testing. Looking at the udev .068 package in unstable, it looks like there are plenty of problems that'll make it quite some time before it is moved to testing. About 585 other packages in testing seem to depend on the testing version of udev. This seems to be the only package in testing that requires an unstable version of a tool that would break dependencies of so many other packages. Yet somehow alsa-utils was built to require udev .063 or greater (unstable). I thought the idea was to build a package for testing, you get a testing install and build with those dependencies. I do understand that the other packages change, but they seem to try hard not to break the other packages of the same release. They as I understand it have checkpoints to make sure they don't get released if that's the case, especially below unstable. I did a dist-upgrade just recently from stable to testing and lost alsa-utils in the big upgrade and now can't seem to get it back without going through the hastle of having hundreds of packages wanting to upgrade to unstable due to dependencies. I really don't want to go there. Yes, I could probably get the sources and build it myself, but that somehow doesn't seem like it should be necessary. I understand your comment about just wait, ok not having sound is not the end of the world and I do appear to have an option. I guess like I said I just don't understand how we got to this place of such a mismatch and I'm hoping you can explain. BTW, in case it hasn't been said in a while, I and I'm sure many others do appreciate the work you and others do as package maintainers. I don't want this email to seem like complaining. It does however seem that the package should have been kept more in sync with the release it's intended for. What is it that I and the others in this boat are missing? If nothing, could this be rebuilt for testing with the testing version of udev (.056-3)? At least until udev resolves their many issues and get's a newer version into testing... Bug#325800: logcheck: filters miss nfs mount/unmount messages
Package: logcheck Version: 1.2.41 Severity: wishlist Hi, thanks for maintaining logcheck, it works very well. At some point it appears as if the log messages for nfs mounts and unmounts changed out from under you. There's a rule in /etc/logcheck/ignore.d.server/nfs to filter out messages like this: Aug 22 21:00:49 phoenix mountd[29423]: authenticated mount request from warthog.caboteria.org:601 for /home (/home) but it expects the message to be slightly different: "rpc.mountd:" instead of "mountd[29423]". I believe that adding the following line to the file will catch those messages: ^\w{3} [ :0-9]{11} [._[:alnum:]-]+ mountd\[[0-9]+\]: authenticated (un|)mount request from [._[:alnum:]-]+:[0-9]+ for (/[[:alnum:]]*)+ \((/[[:alnum:]]*)+\)$ Thanks, Toby -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.10-1-686-smp Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C (charmap=ANSI_X3.4-1968) Versions of packages logcheck depends on: ii adduser 3.67Add and remove users and groups ii cron 3.0pl1-91 management of regular background p ii debconf [debconf 1.4.58 Debian configuration management sy ii debianutils 2.14.2 Miscellaneous utilities specific t ii grep 2.5.1.ds1-5 GNU grep, egrep and fgrep ii lockfile-progs 0.1.10 Programs for locking and unlocking ii logcheck-databas 1.2.41 database of system log rules for t ii logtail 1.2.41 Print log file lines that have not ii mailx1:8.1.2-0.20050715cvs-1 A simple mail user agent ii postfix [mail-tr 2.2.4-1 A high-performance mail transport ii sysklogd [system 1.4.1-17System Logging Daemon logcheck recommends no packages. -- debconf information: * logcheck/noroot: logcheck/changes: * logcheck/install-note: -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". I'm afraid I don't have a good estimated release date now, but I think he'll be back at work soon. Unfortunately at each stage I've been under the impression the release will probably have happened before m68k has built everything, making spending time on uploading a new 6.4 et al an unattractive proposition. Believe me, I'm as frustrated by this as you. Bug#194460: Auto-generation of rsh server hosts file(s)
Greetings, The update-cluster package provides an efficient way to manage multiple configuration files from a single master list of machines. It is used, for example, by mpich, jmon, dsh and update-cluster-hosts to generate and maintain config files involving lists of machines. I'm wondering whether this approach can be used efficiently to configure rsh and ssh host lists, such as /etc/hosts.equiv and, with a bit more difficulty, /etc/ssh/ssh_known_hosts2 (this would involve polling all of the relevant machines for their public keys, or harvesting them from some user's ~/.ssh/known_hosts2 file). hosts.equiv is easy to do, but hard to assign in terms of ownership: does rsh-server own it, or is it more generic to all rsh server implementations? After two idle years in the BTS, I'd like to move forward on this, and would be happy to generate patches as appropriate. So, any thoughts on where this should go: update-cluster-hosts, rsh-server, etc? And Matthew or Colin, would you accept into ssh an update-cluster script to auto-generate /etc/ssh/ssh_known_hosts2? [Pre Scriptum: written for the archives and the CCed bugreport; not just for the people on the CC list -JimC] If by OpenType you mean sfnt/CFF fonts, you just embed the (optionally subsetted) CFF table mostly just like a type1. (The CFF table is in type2 format; you may need to convert the outlines to type1 depending on which version of postscript is targeted. It may also be CID keyed; that may also require a conversion.) The rest of the tables are only relevant for deciding which glyphs to set for a given string and what if any kerning is required. Type42 works for all sfnt/glyf fonts, no matter what additional tables they have. (OpenType, AAT, Graphite, et al.) -JimC -- James H. Bug#325710: [Jean-Luc Coulon (f5ibh)] Bug#325710: libofx2: Tries to replace libofx.so.2.0 which is part of libofx1c2
reassign 325710 ftp.debian.org retitle 325710 "Please delete version 1:0.8.0-1 version of libofx1c2 and libofx-dev" thanks Explanation: Version 1:0.8.0-1 of libofx failed to catch an soname bump (upstream didn't indicate, and I foolishly failed to check). So it contains a package named libofx1c2, but which install libofx2, not libofx1. Version 1:0.8.0-2 of libofx is correct: it installs libofx2, and doesn't install a libofx1c2 at all. But people who caught the 1:0.8.0-1 version and now upgrade to 1:0.8.0-2 find that libofx2-0.8.0-2 conflicts with libofx1c2-0.8.0-1, of course. It seems to me the correct course is to expunge the 0.8.0-1 packages entirely. It is perfectly fine for the 0.7.0-7.1 packages to stay in the archive. If this is not the correct fix, please reassign the bug back to libofx2, and I would also appreciate instructions on the correct way to fix the bug. I mean, you can compile a library with one version of gcc and link to it when compiling a program with a different version of gcc. We are even talking about C, which AFAICT doesn't suffer the same binary compatibility issues as C++. As far as running newer self-compiled kernels, that certainly is not the case for me. In fact, I only compile my own kernel becuase I require the mppe patch on my machines. Bug#250216: [tex-k] Plans about supporting TrueType/Type42 fonts in dvips?

I have looked into supporting TrueType in xdvi. A key subsidiary issue that came up (and stopped it for me) was compatibility with ttf2tfm and ttf2pk. They come up with their own character encoding that basically (as I recall) chooses the lowest-numbered 255 or 256 available characters into the encoding vector. Adding to the difficulties is the fact that ttf2tfm/ttf2pk use the old (version 1) freetype library. I tried porting these programs to freetype2, but the latter lacks some features of the original freetype, and is never likely to have them (Werner Lemberg said that programs should use pango instead for these features). --Paul Vojta, [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Ah, yes. I really don't understand why the kernel embeds the gcc version into its version-matching logic, but I've run into this problem as well. I agree that it warrants documenting, though I also suspect that most users running self-compiled 2.6 kernels are going to be running something a bit newer than 2.6.8 anyway. Yes. unless in some rare cases, there is no need to change the primary group. However newgrp or sg can be used in another use cases: getting the privileges of a group you are not in, by providing a password. This can be used to setup boxes with a guest account and let some of the guests gain more privileges. In those cases, guest is not a member of any group (in /etc/group and /etc/gshadow), and the password of the privileged group is distributed to some of the physical persons using the guest account. You can also imagine some configurations where somebody do not want to be in a given group (to avoid mistake), but wants to be able to gain this group privilege with newgrp (without password if this user is in the member list in gshadow). The gshadow file also permits to use group administrators (see gpasswd(1)). If you are not willing to do any of these, you can live without any notice without the /etc/gshadow file. I still have my question: Do you think that the paragraph of my previous mail would have permitted you to understand how newgrp works? No, failing to read the release notes for sarge and doing a blind dist-upgrade on a desktop system was also likely to rip out large swaths of packages in the process. I understand that we all want dist-upgrade to Just Work, but I don't see how complaining that the release notes contain important information that users ignore at their peril is different from complaining that the list of packages being removed on apt-get dist-upgrade contains important information that users ignore at their peril. If you aren't satisfied with the current solution, the answer is to figure out a better one rather than lamenting that no one else has. Dan Jacobson a écrit : Well, in SYNOPSIS pppd pty 'pppoe [pppoe_options]' [pppd_options] pppoe -A [pppoe_options] we see that just plain pppoe with no arguments is illegal. So someone should add it to the SYNOPSIS, at least. It wouldn't hurt to also mention what it does. Actually it is there, although the synopsis isn't all that clear I guess. The first line is "this is how you use pppoe with pppd", and there, calling it with no options is legal, and (depending on what you want to do) useful. The second one is "this is what's useful when you're runnning pppoe as a user in a shell, and there only the -A option (list all access concentrators) is indeed useful. Er, there is nothing "limited" about Debian's support for LSB init scripts. You (and the maintainer of this package) seem to be making the error of thinking that LSB support imposes requirements on how an LSB-compliant OS manages its *own* init scripts. It does not -- it only specifies the features that an LSB-compliant OS must make available for use by an LSB init script. So yes, if insserv assumes that all Debian initscripts are LSB init scripts, it is fundamentally broken. -- Steve Langasek Give me a lever long enough and a Free OS Debian Developer to set it on, and I can move the world. That paragraph appears to read: A pointer to an object or incomplete type may be converted to a pointer to a different object or incomplete type. If the resulting pointer is not correctly aligned for the pointed-to type, the behavior is undefined. Otherwise, when converted back again, the result shall compare equal to the original pointer. When a pointer to an object is converted to a pointer to a character type, the result points to the lowest addressed byte of the object. So by making the initial cast from char * to the pointer type that requires greater alignment, the programmer is invoking undefined behavior, which means gcc's implementation of memcpy() is allowed by the spec. Bug#325798: insserv: makes 2.6 kernel system unbootable and 2.4 system barely usable
Package: insserv Version: 1.00.8-1 Severity: critical Justification: breaks the whole system -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 I copied the two scripts, checked that the boot order in the rc*d directories still made sense, then ran "insserv - -v" and ended up with a serverely broken system: 1) if booting from a 2.6 kernel, the system repeatedly reboots right at the stage when it should be loading modules selected in /etc/modules. 2) if booting from a 2.4 kernel, it goes all the way to the last boot script, but portmap and libwrap both report being unable to load some SO libraries. In any case, X barely loads, while GNOME gets stuck at its splash screen; meanwhile, a few command line tools work on the virtual console as expected, others don't. I would also like to point out that according to Debian Policy, software that has the potential to render a system unusable must have a priority of "extra", not "optional". Basically, this package should not have been allowed into unstable and is already of questionable use for Debian at this point, given Debian's extremely limitted LSB support. As such, I demand that it be immediately removed from the archive; if it ever gets reintroduced, it should first go to and be thoroughly tested via experimental. Thanks! PS: this being said, if and when Debian achieves LSB compliance, this package might eventually be safe and even usefull, but this is definitely not the case now, so it must be removed right away. - -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers stable APT policy: (990, 'stable'), (500, 'testing'), (99, 'unstable') Architecture: powerpc (ppc) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.4.18-newpmac Locale: LANG=fi_FI.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=fi_FI.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages insserv depends on: ii libc6 2.3.5-3GNU C Library: Shared libraries an insserv recommends no packages. - -- no debconf information -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.4.1 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFDFOWGeXr56x4Muc0RAnblAJ9moh4Ju/lLWhRs1pX9nKtUwPKaFQCgoutV UzjQqxyPB/7lb6cWInbvo/M= =WiEy -END PGP SIGNATURE- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#325234: debian-policy: mention if coincidence runlevels 2345 all same
B> Debian doesn't enforce a policy on the multi-user run-levels (2-5), this B> is the decision of the local administrator. OK, it wouldn't hurt to mention that fact then in the policy document, just to make things clear. Or maybe it would hurt.
