Bug#329263: psi: Introduced by Debian patch

2005-11-03 Thread Thomas Prokosch
Package: psi

Followup-For: Bug #329263

I can confirm that this bug did not occur with version 0.9.3-1, so I am
quite confident that it has been introduced by one of the Debian patches.

Bug#322197: OSS_GETVERSION ioctl (on /dev/mixer) fails with ENXIO

Hi!

Currently, we're using kFreeBSD 5.4. We patched it to support OSS_VERSION and
OSS_GETVERSION in order to improve compatibility with OSS. However, the patch
we used was not totaly correct, so the ioctl is present but not working.

Please note that OSS is both a standard and an application, much like X11. But
in this case the application is propietary, so when we speak of OSS we're
referring to the standard that both free implementations (like the ones in Linux
or kernels of *BSD) and the propietary implementation (used in propietary Un*x)
follow.

What I'd like is that our OSS is more compatible with the one in Linux, since
this is the actual de-facto standard (i.e. what everyone is using to develop OSS
programs). If the propietary one has functions that we don't have, this is not
a big deal, but if the Linux one does, that means more packages that break on
GNU/kFreeBSD.

perl doesn't parse /etc/group directly, it just calls libc's getgrname,
which returns a list as gr_mem (the last entry of which has a trailing
colon in this case).

This patch should have zero effect after the line

. /usr/share/debconf/confmodule

The temporary file descriptor 9 is only in force up until this line.
It also doesn't change the handling of file descriptor 3 at all.

Did I miss something?

Bug#337373: wmaker: wxpaste fails to paste Hebrew chars from primary selection

2005-11-03 Thread Tzafrir Cohen
Package: wmaker
Version: 0.91.0-7.2
Severity: normal

I work in a uxterm. 'date' shows the date and I can type Hebrew from the
X keyboard. When I mark Hebrew text with the mouse and paste it with
shift-insert it is displayed well.

However when I try to paste the same text using 'wxpaste' I get exactly
one '#' (hash) mark for every Hebrew character in the original string.
Numbers and English show up fine.

The upstream licencing issue have prevented me from updating

The released scim-tables 0.5.4 has been packaged and is waiting in the
NEW queue for ftp-master's approval.

This patch would break the hundreds of daemons that contain postinst
scripts that work around the original debconf misfeature by closing FD
3. This is not the correct way to deal with this problem. See the
existing bug reports on this issue for details.

Bug#337363: alien: Improper copyright file

2005-11-03 Thread Joey Hess
This bug report is too pedantic for me to waste my time on. A point for
point rebuttal would be demeaning. Would you rather I leave it open at
RC status indefinitely until someone takes pity on it and closes it, or
just orphan alien?

PS, I or a small perl script can probably find 1000 or more other
packages for you to file RC bugs on if you'd find that useful.

Thats what I initially thought as well, all I can say is that it the

Be advised that updating the C library is no trivial task and it is very
easy to damage one's system. Unless you are interested in helping with the
development and maintenance of the C library yourself, you will find it
much easier to use a binary distribution instead. The code in this release
has already been built and tested by maintainers of GNU/Linux and GNU/Hurd
binary distributions basing their systems on it.

This release can be compiled using GCC 4.0, but you should expect many more
compiler warnings than when using GCC 3.4. The development version of libc
is better suited to being built with the most recent GCC versions.

Note the `linuxthreads' package is required to build a useful system C
library for use with Linux kernels prior to version 2.6. To build a
configuration supporting only Linux 2.6 kernels or to build for
GNU/Hurd, the package is not required. The main glibc-2.3.6 release
package contains the Native POSIX Threads Library (NPTL) contributed
by Ulrich Drepper, which supports Linux 2.6 kernels only.

introduces security problems. Thus I'm tagging these bugs
wontfix for now.

Bug#337045: race condition?: sometimes fails to correctly detect my harddisk

2005-11-03 Thread Jurij Smakov

Hi,

I've seen similar symptoms (missing devices at boot) go away when I've
increased the delay after the call to udevsynthesize in the initrd's init.
You can try increasing the argument to sleep in /usr/share/initramfs-tools/init
(around line 72):

# Populate /dev tree
log_begin_msg "Initializing /dev"
mkdir /dev/.udevdb
UDEVD_EXPECTED_SEQNUM=$(($(cat /sys/kernel/hotplug_seqnum) + 1)) udevd --daemon
udevsynthesize
sleep 2
log_end_msg

Try changing 'sleep 2' to 'sleep 20', regenerate the initrd and reboot.
Let us know if it fixes the problem.

Bug#337364: debconf: Separate stdout/stderr in maintainer scripts using debconf

2005-11-03 Thread herbert
Package: debconf
Version: 1.4.30.13
Severity: normal

Many maintainer scripts produce output on stdout and error on stderr.
In particular, init.d scripts will write messages such as

Starting proxy server: squid.

to stdout. It would be very convenient to be able to separate messages
such as these from errors which are sent to stderr.

Currently, if a maintainer script uses debconf then stdout is redirected
to stderr which makes the separation impossible.

Here is a patch that uses a simple redirection to preserve the original
stdout so that we can deal with normal output in a different way.

I believe that the problem still remains at boot time because
root is read-only, and modprobe's locks require write access.

2005-11-03 Thread Michael Gilbert
Package: python-matplotlib
Version: 0.83.2

Hello,

The matplotlib package should have dependencies on the tetex-base and
dvipng packages. The following python code will not work properly
unless both latex and dvipng are present on the user's system:

>>> import pylab
>>> pylab.rc('text', usetex=True)
>>> pylab.xlabel(r'test $\alpha$')
>>> pylab.show()

Thank you for the hard work putting this useful package together.

Hello all,

I already reported this directly to Alexendre, but I am duplicating it
here so that it can be tracked properly (hopefully this is the right
location since the package doesn't yet exist on the BTS). The
matplotlib package

should have dependencies on the tetex-base and dvipng packages. The

Bug#337359: slib fails to configure: "ERROR: Unbound variable: with-load-pathname"

Perhaps slib has some dependency which is not listed? Actually, it
doesn't list any dependency but it seems there obviously are some,
like maybe a scheme compiler.

Bug#330606: mozilla-firefox does not start up

2005-11-03 Thread Nilesh Kapadia
I am having this problem (on i386) and I think I have found the source
of the problem and a workaround.  I start Firefox and it sits
there loading.  My CPU usage goes to 100% and it is sed that
is using all the cpu.  Once I kill the sed process Firefox
starts up.  This is what the processes look like: 26956 ?S  0:00 /bin/sh /usr/bin/firefox 26966 ?S  0:00 /bin/sh /usr/bin/firefox 26970 ?R  1:13 sed -e s/\"//g
  Looks like it has to do with this line from mozilla-firefox script: JVM_VERSION=`${JVM_COMMAND} -version 2>&1 | grep version | cut -f 3 -d " " | sed -e 's/\"//g'` This
appears to be code that gets the Java version.  I have tried
Sun JDK 1.5.0_05 and 1.5.0_02 and they both exhibit the problem. It looks like this line that comes before it is causing the problem: export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 I was able to create a script that recreates the issue that looks like this:
  #!/bin/sh export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 echo `java -version 2>&1 | grep version | cut -f 3 -d " " | sed -e 's/\"//g'`
So I have commented out first occurance of the line "export
LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5" in mozilla-firefox script and it starts up fine
now. Nilesh Kapadia [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.nileshk.com

Bug#337230: --print-debs WHAT_TO_DO includes kill_target but doesn't require a target

2005-11-03 Thread Ryan Schultz
This is caused by the kill_target being included in the WHAT_TO_DO for
--print-debs. When a target is not specified, it is set to the working
directory (I guess), and kill_target will indeed wipe it out. Adding
kill_target or printdebs to the list at line 251 would fix this, since that
would ensure that the user specifies a target whenever debootstrap is going
to destroy one.

That would probably break other things -- maybe this will help the maintainer
find a solution, though.

Bug#337346: slib upgrade broken

2005-11-03 Thread Thomas Bushnell BSG

So the slib upgrade to version 3a2 doesn't work because the ice-9
has a slib.scm file which should be a copy (or near copy) of the slib
file "guile.init".

Version 3a2 has added the function "with-load-pathname" and it isn't
in the slib.scm file that the guile packages provide.

It seems to me that:

1) slib.scm should not be in guile-1.6-libs and libguile9.
2) slib.scm should be in guile1.4-slib and guile-1.6-slib.
3) the guile*-slib packages should contain a *versioned* dependency on
slib so that new slib versions which change the initialization
   interface can DTRT.

Whether this re-factoring happens, however, can you please fix the
current ice-9 in each guile version to be able to load scm 3a2?
Thanks.

I'm not sure what you're asking... A tmpfs can definitely be mounted on
/tmp, and I suppose yaird could mount a tmpfs wherever it plans to
create its temporary files, but I'm not sure why you'd want to do that.

/tmp exists for a reason; why not use it?

Hi Bruno,

I hate to admit defeat, but I have to here. I have absolutely no time
to
devote to bbconf anymore. I had someone who said he would help me, but
nothing has happened in the last several months and I have no
inclination
that anything will anytime soon. Any spare time that I have, I tend to
spend
more on KDE-related things anyway.

So, if you need to drop bbconf from debian, I completely understand and
I
think it would probably be better that way anyway. =:/

Sorry to wait so long to admit the obvious. =:/

Thank you for waiting for me.

However, rebuilding mozilla-firefox using pbuilder successfully linked
with libkrb53 - Negotiate authentication works again

Could mozilla-firefox please be rebuilt for powerpc & confirm it is
linked with libkrb53?

Many thanks!

Bug#337351: libembperl-perl: FTBFS on arm - fails httpd syntax check 1

2005-11-03 Thread wookey
Package: libembperl-perl
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 4.8

fails during output caching tests:

Performing httpd syntax check 1 ... ERROR: Syntax OK not found
Got apache2: bad group name 1023

Attempting to reproduce this on my netwinder unstable chroot I find that the
package simply builds OK. I am at a bit of a loss to explain this. What
exactly is that test doing? Trying to run apache or apache2?

no, zim is not in etch now, either. you're using sid in zim, and you
may do a 'apt-get update' and find libfile-mimeinfo-perl or
libfile-basedir-pel.

please wait till zim reach etch.

Bug#337350: xfree86-driver-synaptics: Motion with pressure sensitivity

2005-11-03 Thread Stéphane Rosi
Package: xfree86-driver-synaptics
Version: 0.14.3-1
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

Hi,

I have added a functionnality that that makes the speed of the motion
relative to the pressure exerced on the touchpad (the more you press, the faster
it goes). The pressure value used is the z parameter, as for edge motions.

For that, three parameters have been added:
* PressureFactor : Represents the sensitivity of the speed to the
  pressure. To be exact, new_speed = speed * PressureFactor * z.
* MotionMaxZ : Maximum pressure (if z > MotionMaxZ, then z = MotionMaxZ).
* MotionMinZ : Minimum pressure (if z > MotionMaxZ, then z = MotionMaxZ).

The main functionnality is obtained through the pressure factor.
The maximum and minimum values can be used in case you do not want to
put too much or too less pressure to obtain the maximum or minimum
speeds.

Cheers,

Bug#331285: Please consider adding emacsen to depends

2005-11-03 Thread Martin Skøtt
Hi

I have just encountered the same problem with python-mode being
removed when installing emacs-snapshot-gtk.

I solved the problem by building my own version of the package with
emacsen added to the depends line in the control file. The new package
works flawlessly.

Please consider adding emacsen to depends so other users can benefit
from this as well. I just checked jde and php-elisp and they too list
emacsen in their depends.

Thank you, that is what I hoped.

I think these links cause problems in certain conditions (#230229).
Perhaps if several packages are unpacked together? Despite what it
says at the end of #230229, they were not cleaned up completely at
that time. So I thought: finish the job. It may also prevent future
problems.

For me personally, the problem is only cosmetic. I was searching
semi-automatically for links/alternatives/... that are "extra files"
in the sense of package cruft and that may need changing in some way.

Bug#336719: Can you reproduce this on 4.5.3-4?

2005-11-03 Thread Hilko Bengen
The current version in sarge (w/ security updates) is 4.5.3-4 and from
looking at upstream's CVS tree, it appears to me as if the bug leading
to the security vulnerability was introduced _after_ 4.5.3.

Can you confirm that this bug exists in 4.5.3-4?

Moreover, merging the PostgreSQL-related issues with this security bug
does _not_ seem to be a good idea to me.

Bug#337344: aptitude: First character after bullet item in long description is ignored

2005-11-03 Thread James Vega
Package: aptitude
Version: 0.3.5.1-2
Severity: normal
Tags: experimental patch

As seen when looking at the pkg info page for 'comix', the character
immediately after the bullet item character is skipped over. This
should instead check whether the character is a space. Attached patch
should address the problem.

Bug#337343: nautilus: Warning message when deleting a mounted network share is wrong.

2005-11-03 Thread Andrew Ruthven
Package: nautilus
Version: 2.10.1-5
Severity: normal

Hi,

If you select the icon for a mounted network shared and hit the delete
key (or drag it to the trash) a dialog appears stating:

You cannot delete a volume icon.

If you want to eject the volume, please use Eject in the right-click
  menu of the volume.

In the context menu for the volume there is no Eject item, the correct
item is "Unmount Volume".

Cheers!

Bug#337342: kdemangen.pl does not parse short-only options

2005-11-03 Thread Peter Eisentraut
Package: kdesdk-scripts
Version: 4:3.4.2-2.1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

kdemangen.pl parses the output of --help-all to detect the options of the
program
under scrutiny. However, it fails to parse options that only have a
single-letter
short form, e.g., "-f ". The attached patch fixes that, but the regexp can
of course be written in numerous other ways depending on taste.

Bug#337341: tetex-bin: more fmtutil problems :-(

2005-11-03 Thread Gordon Haverland
Package: tetex-bin
Version: 3.0-9
Severity: normal

A few people have had problems upgrading tetex-bin, and some seem to
have resolved their problems. I've gone a week or so of doing apt-get
upgrades, and tetex-bin still won't install because of a problem with
fmtutils (or so I am lead to believe). Today, I purged jadetex and
tried to get things to finish installing. After purging jadetext, apt
didn't want to install tetex-bin and tetex-extra, instead it wanted
apt-get -f install. Fine, try that. Now jadetex is added to the list
of packages hung on installing.

None of the people reporting bugs on this related topic, have mentioned
xmltex or passivetex, both of which are installed on my machine.
Upgrades to tetex-bin now seem to be tied to removing both xmltex and
passivetex.

Another few days of packaging problems are okay, but once I finish my
generic program to help fop use fonts already installed here as truetype
or type 1, and I am going to want to do some printing which likely will
want to use tetex functionality. At that point, I would be willing to
start experimenting on what to do to get this stuff working again.
Ideas would be nice. A fix would be better. :-)

Bug#329413: beta firefox and postinst

2005-11-03 Thread Michael Spang

I'm pretty sure I replied to your mail. Maybe you didn't receive it.

Interesting, I don't have it and can't recall seeing it. I must have deleted it
with all of my spam.

Anyways, the update-mozilla-firefox-chrome won't return, since it's
useless for firefox 1.5. You can just check whether it exists or not
before running it.

Thanks for the info. Guess installed-chrome.txt is out the window, which is
fine by me.
The new system in 1.5 seems to be working great.

Attached a patch for doing so.

Applied. Will be fixed in 0.9.4-1.

Thanks,
Mike

I was not aware of that, but judging from the discussion, it will still
be hundreds of years before type-handling disappears entirely.

Bug#337340: sentinel attribute should support non-NULL sentinels

2005-11-03 Thread Josh Triplett
Package: gcc-4.0
Version: 4.0.2-1
Severity: wishlist
Tags: upstream

The sentinel attribute tells GCC to ensure that the argument list of a
variadic function always ends with a final NULL argument. It should be
possible to use this attribute for a variadic function where the
sentinel is some constant other than NULL, as long as the value of the
constant can be determined at compile time and supplied as a parameter
to the sentinel attribute.

As far as I understand your problem, it is solved in a forthcoming
version of the vim package (those links are no longer installed by vim,
but only created as slaves via alternatives).

But still: what's exactly your problem?

Bug#337337: gqview: [patch] no support for multi-file actions (and undo) in the sort bar

2005-11-03 Thread Glenn ROLLAND
Package: gqview
Version: 2.0.1-1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

The current version does not support multiple file move/copy/link
actions (and the equivalents undo actions) in the folder-sort
bar...(CTRL+S).

I solved the problem with the following patch (it has been tested on
Debian GNU/Linux i386 and powerpc).

Bug#337248: libgtk+2.0-directfb-dev: Missing dependency on pkg-config

2005-11-03 Thread Frans Pop
Package: libgtk+2.0-directfb-dev
Version: 2.0.9.2-10
Followup-For: Bug #337248

As this package supplies .pc files, it should depend on pkg-config
(libgtk2.0-dev does the same).
No real hurry to add this as this is currently taken care of for
cdebconf-gtk by its dependency on libgtk2.0-dev.

Bug#337336: ipe: Ipe can not find pdflatex

2005-11-03 Thread David Pal
Package: ipe
Version: 6.0pre23-2
Severity: important

When I draw a simple picture in IPE with a text label and I try to
save it, IPE fails complaining:

"Something is wrong with PDF file generated by Pdflatex. Please consult
the stderr output to identify the problem."

And on stderr I see that output of pdflatex which has successfully generated
PDF.

As far as I understand IPE runs pdflatex on a temporary file
~/.ipe/latexrun/text.tex (the output is saved in
~/.ipe/latexrun/text.pdf) and then uses the PDF generated by pdflatex to
compose the PDF file for the whole picture. But somehow IPE is searching
for text.pdf in wrong directory or there some incompatibility issue between
pdflatex
and IPE.

Bug#337335: nautilus: Dialog displayed when opening a broken link should cancel by default

2005-11-03 Thread Andre Wendt
Package: nautilus
Version: 2.10.1-5
Severity: wishlist

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

When opening a broken symlink, nautilus asks what to do and wants to
delete the link by default. This is especially annoying when working in
a network environment without mounting the proper shared directories. I
often simply forget to mount the shares and delete links by accident.

Please change the default dialog choice to cancel. No system should
delete anything by default.

Regards,
Andre

In fact, the problem is that -mieee is supposed to be on by default in
Debian's gcc build for alpha, but the patch was not applied to gcc-4.0 until
4.0.2-2. A binNMU has been scheduled for this problem on the Debian
autobuilders; if the maintainer wants to fix the CFLAGS so that they include
- -mieee in case of further toolchain problems then this bug can remain open
(at reduced severity), otherwise it can probably be closed.

Cheers,

Cool, thanks.

Beware, odds are that the patch will need tweeking for 2.6.13 or
2.6.14, for now only kernels up to 2.6.12 are supported.

I am sorry for not answering earlier, had to go out for a while.
Unfortunately, installing, reinstalling several times the packages has
not fixed the problem. In my system, after several reinstallations, the
status is as follows:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dpkg -s xserver-xorg libx11-6 x11-common | grep Status
Status: install ok installed

 Version 11", "X11", "X11R6", and "X11R6.8". The version of X used in

 and yet

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ emacs21
Undefined color: "black"

which is driving me crazy, since I use emacs for almost everything.

Thank you guys for your help.

No, but I just noticed #316030 came back because I forgot to change the
RPATH back to the now-again-used /usr/lib/openoffice/program Maybe
there's some correlation? OTOH. after setting LD_LIBRARY_PATH it still
doesn't work... Hmm. Let's see..

Bug#337334: CVE-2005-3409: DoS through null pointer deference in exception handling

2005-11-03 Thread Moritz Muehlenhoff
Package: openvpn
Severity: important
Tags: security

Hi,
openvpn 2.0.4 fixes another security problem:

* Security fix -- Potential DoS vulnerability on the
server in TCP mode. If the TCP server accept() call
returns an error status, the resulting exception handler
may attempt to indirect through a NULL pointer, causing
a segfault. Affects all OpenVPN 2.0 versions.
  CVE-2005-3409

Cheers,
Moritz

Bug#337332: vim.list unpacks two wrong links (which update-alternatives then corrects)

2005-11-03 Thread J S Bygott
Package: vim
Version: 1:6.3-071+1
Severity: normal

Two symlinks in vim.list should be deleted:
srwxrwxrwxroot/root  0 ./usr/share/man/man1/ex.1.gz --> vim.1.gz
srwxrwxrwxroot/root  0 ./usr/share/man/man1/view.1.gz --> vim.1.gz

As soon as dpkg has unpacked these links, dpkg calls vim.postinst, where
these links are changed with update-alternatives.

It looks like a bug to include them in vim.list.

Bug#337331: evince: glibc detects corrupted double-linked list

2005-11-03 Thread Sanjoy Mahajan
Package: evince
Version: 0.3.0-2
Severity: normal

Upon doing the following:

1. evince bug.ps bug.ps
2. wait for the two windows to be drawn (they usually overlap)
3. close the top one with ctrl-W (or using the File menu)

evince hangs with

*** glibc detected *** corrupted double-linked list: 0xb6f91218 ***

It seems to happen with any ps file I use, but for repeatability I've
put 'bug.ps' at
 but you can
easily reproduce it with this 'bug.tex' file:

\nopagenumbers
1
\end

and then 'tex bug; dvips bug -o bug.ps'

Bug#337330: fluxbox: Slight malfunction in handling of diversion of bsetroot

2005-11-03 Thread Andrew Moise
Package: fluxbox
Version: 0.9.14-1
Severity: normal

I had blackbox and fluxbox both installed, with the corresponding
troubles with bsetroot (which have now been mostly corrected). When I
removed an old version of fluxbox (0.9.13-1, I believe), it left the
diversion of bsetroot around. When I noticed that bsetroot wasn't
working anymore, I tried to let fluxbox correct the problem by
reinstalling it (version 0.9.14-1), but that didn't work:

Unpacking fluxbox (from .../fluxbox_0.9.14-1_i386.deb) ...
Leaving `diversion of /usr/bin/bsetroot to /usr/bin/bsetroot.blackbox by
fluxbox'
Leaving `diversion of /usr/share/man/man1/bsetroot.1.gz to
/usr/share/man/man1/bsetroot.blackbox.1.gz by fluxbox'
Setting up fluxbox (0.9.14-1) ...

So then I had blackbox and fluxbox installed, no /usr/bin/bsetroot
provided by fluxbox, and a diversion of blackbox's /usr/bin/bsetroot
by fluxbox. I know that this is sort of an odd case to worry about.
I've fixed the problem on my system, and I know that the more typical
case (upgrading fluxbox instead of removing-it-and-then-reinstalling-a-
newer-version) does work correctly.
It does seem to me, though, that it would be harmless to remove the
diversion during installation of fluxbox as well as during removal or
uprgade. If you feel differently you may immediately close this bug,
and I will henceforth forget that anything ever happened :-).
