Hi!

There are active SIM fork, called SIM-IM[0]. Inasmuch original SIM
stands still for a long time and is very outdated, maybe it is worth to
use latest SVN from this fork in package?

Hello,

off the top of my head, might be an amd64 effect, we had some of those

please strace a revelation startup and send it to the BTS:

yes this is just a warning upstream has to fix (and nows about).

Following your suggestion I did xrdb -q; the result was

xterm*VT100*foreground: black
xterm*VT100*utf8:

Apart from the first line, this is what I put in my ~/.Xresources file
ages ago. Notice there is a line xterm*VT100*utf8. I had put this in
because I thought it was necessary (and maybe it used to be in the
past). Anyway it did not hurt with xterm 200.

But then I commented it out, installed xterm 204, and restarted X.
And now lo and behold! xterm is 'hard-wired' to UTF-8 mode (with
right-clicking you cannot switch it off), and creating a new xterm with
xterm +u8 produces an xterm which displays Latin-1, and which can be
switched to UTF-8 manually. This is what Thomas Wolff wanted, I assume.

It does look odd since it is a blank value. I would have expected the
X library to ignore that line, but it probably just uses atoi() on the
resource value.

Bug#342100: mozilla-firefox: Enable parallel install of firefox 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0

2005-12-05 Thread Hans-Joachim Baader
Package: mozilla-firefox
Version: 1.4.99+1.5rc3.dfsg-1
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

clearly, I can install one version of Firefox from the Debian archive
and the others from official install packages, but I think it would
be preferrable to have multiple Debian versions installed.

This might be a topic to be discussed more generally because it could
also affect many other packages. Perhaps a general mechanism to allow
parallel versions is needed, I don't know if this is already discussed.

Best regards,
hjb

Bug#342101: apt-proxy: Map backends to virtual http-server

2005-12-05 Thread Jan Fricke
Package: apt-proxy
Version: 1.9.32
Severity: wishlist

I would suggest, that apt-proxy should support virtual servers
by interpreting the "Host: " line of the http-request as the
address for the virtual servers. This has the following advantages:
- The download process is parallelizable.
- Because most of the package utilities don't show the complete path
one doesn't know from which server the package *really* comes.

Example: Server apt-proxy.localnet, backend "debian", then the
following "sources.list"-entries should have the same effect:
deb http://apt-proxy.localnet:/debian testing main non-free contrib
deb http://debian.apt-proxy.localnet: testing main non-free contrib

Best whishes and thanks for the good work!

Do the segfaults happen if you disable the extension=mysql.so line in

Right, "d" and "z" are files in your current directory. The bash
completion machinery mistakenly believes that the "?" subversion option
(a synonym for "help") is supposed to be expanded as a file wildcard.

The following patch will be in the next subversion upload.

Bug#342104: strange mysql bug, possibly thread related

2005-12-05 Thread Petr Salinger
Package: kfreebsd-5
Version: 5.4-8

Hi.

> I've installed libc 2.3.1+kbsd.13 (alongside kfreebsd-image 5.4-8)
> and mysql works ok.
> Indeed, and amavis=>clamd works, too :)

I played with it and the reason seems related to
thread signaling AND setuid()/setgid() calls.

Robin, Konstantinos, please, can you test to change
user of mysql and clamd to root ?
After that, it should work with latest glibc.

Given it helps also for you:

There is a exception granted for SIGUSR1 and SIGUSR2,
but not for our current thread signals.
Details in kernel sources, sys/kern/kern_prot.c, function
int cr_cansignal(struct ucred *cred, struct proc *proc, int signum)

Already fixed in FreeBSD 6.0, suggested patch for package kfreebds-5:
http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/src/sys/kern/kern_prot.c.diff?r1=1.198&r2=1.187.2.3

Hm, that didn't help much...

Not only are there no debugging symbols in the cron child, but I
apparently triggered a bug in gdb, as well.

Bug#342106: kopete: Incoming MSN file transfer fails from MSN7.5 clients

2005-12-05 Thread Rasmus Bøg Hansen
Package: kopete
Version: 4:3.5.0-1
Severity: normal

Incoming MSN file transfers seems to work fine but end up with a file
size of 0 bytes. This seems to only happen from MSN 7.5 contacts.

This is a known but unfixed bug in KDE 3.5.0:

http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=113525

My kopete package is from the alioth KDE 3.5.0 archive - I hope the
BTS is the right place for bug reports on those packages:

http://pkg-kde.alioth.debian.org/kde-3.5.0/

I am running a fully upgraded unstable with KDE from alioth (except for
kdepim which is not available from the above source).

Regards
/Rasmus

There are backports for this at http://xfce.corsac.net

You can just put:
deb http://xfce.corsac.net sarge main
in your /etc/apt/sources.list and update and dist-upgrade to get it.

Let us know if this helps.

Simon.

do you have any idea?

I won't be able to reproduce this not having a copy of vmware and I
don't know how happy upstream will be if I file a bug there given it's
to do with proprietary software.

I can try reporting it upstream to http://bugzilla.xfce.org if you can
confirm if it is still broken with the 4.2.x series.

There won't be any further 4.0.x releases. Can you try the 4.2.x
series which is in testing/unstable?

You can find backports of 4.2.3 to sarge at: http://xfce.corsac.net

Just add: deb http://xfce.corsac.net sarge main to your
/etc/apt/sources.list and update and dist-upgrade.

Bug#340279: Build problems on sarti

2005-12-05 Thread Frank Küster
Hi all,

it seems as if the problems that caused #340279 were either only
intermittent, or have been solved meanwhile: Both planner and
mysql-dfsg-5.0 have been built again in the last couple of days, and in
both cases tetex-bin could be installed fine (although mysql failed for
different reasons).

Do you agree that we can close this bug?

What do you think about this:
Template: libapache2-mod-cband/enable-modul
Type: boolean
Default: false
_Description: Enable the cband module for Apache2?
Please choose this option if you wish to enable
 the cband module now.
Note: Apache2 will not be restarted automatically.
For complete installation you have to restart Apache2!

If you say it is now ok, I will send the french translator an new template
file.(the Czech too)

Bug#342082: phpbb2: Database export doesn't work

2005-12-05 Thread Thijs Kinkhorst
tags 342082 upstream
thanks

Hello Nigel,

Thanks for your report.

> When choosing admin->backup database, the file phpbb_db_backup.sql.gz

> Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted
> (tried to allocate 7045801 bytes) in
> /usr/share/phpbb2/site/admin/admin_db_utilities.php on line
> 851

The problem here is a combination of a few factors:
- you're using gzip output compression, and
- your PHP install is set to the php memory limit of 8MB, and
- your database is larger than 8 MB

In order to gzip compress the output, phpbb buffers the table in memory,
gzips it and sends it to you. This causes the memory limit to be
exceeded.

My advice (workaround) is to disable the gzip compression, after which
it will work. Alternatively, you could try to raise the memory limit.

To allow unlimited backup sizes and gzipping is not trivial to solve,
especially with my knowledge of the algorithm. I'll check what upstream
has to say about it.

regards,
Thijs Kinkhorst

I loaded a 2.8Mb XML file into conglomerate, and just managed to kill it

excessive.

The file is a GPX from geocaching.com. I can supply one if needed.

Bug#342110: kde does not like [EMAIL PROTECTED] locales

2005-12-05 Thread Jean-Christophe Dubacq
Package: kde
Severity: important

KDE, in its current unstable version, does not like [EMAIL PROTECTED] locales.
For example, with locales such as:
locale:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
LC_CTYPE="[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
LC_NUMERIC="[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
LC_TIME="[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
LC_COLLATE="[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
LC_MONETARY="[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
LC_MESSAGES="[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
LC_PAPER="[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
LC_NAME="[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
LC_ADDRESS="[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
LC_TELEPHONE="[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
LC_MEASUREMENT="[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

kate and kile (two kde applications) when launched in a non-kde
environment refuse to recognize [EMAIL PROTECTED] as a valid locale,
default to C, and as such interpret keystrokes of é or è as é or è.

However, [EMAIL PROTECTED] is the correct locale for French (UTF-8)
because our currency is the euro.

This bug is related to #248890, but not the same. In my opinion, it is
probably the same as #281155, which was closed, but with no real
solution (the solution "change the locale" is not a solution since
[EMAIL PROTECTED] is the right setting).

Upstream could use the following mechanism instead of doing the whole
compression thing in-memory, so that it doesn't require this much memory
at all anymore.

hi olaf,

sorry there hasn't been a response sooner, christian's on
vacation and i just realized that i wasn't subscribed to the bug
feed for mysql-dfsg-5.0.

anyway, i'll need some more information before we can do anything:

- does it crash on certain queries, or other conditions?
- does it crash immediately after starting?
- what apps are using the database?
- straces, core dumps, log entries, sql queries etc
- is the problem present in the latest version in unstable?

Bug#340459: postgresql-7.4: unable to install

2005-12-05 Thread Martin Pitt
Hi Jonathan!

Jonathan Ballet [2005-12-05 9:46 +0100]:
> Sorry for late reply. Here is the output of 'id postgresql' :
>
> [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ id postgres
> uid=12966(postgres) gid=0(root) groupes=0(root)

>
> I hope it can help ...

It indeed does. It should actually look like

  uid=116(postgres) gid=116(postgres) Gruppen=116(postgres)

i. e. there are several things wrong about your user:

  * The user ID should be smaller than 1000 to make postgres a system
user.
  * postgres should have its own system group instead of being in
group 'root'. This is the cause for your failure.

Since I do not believe that adduser --system created this user, I
strongly suspect that it existed before installing postgresql-common
already. It does not look like a regular user either, though - they
must not be in group 'root'.

Thus, a quickfix for you would be to do

  deluser postgres

and reinstall postgresql-common and postgresql-7.4. However, please
make double sure that you don't need that user for anything else.

I can add a check to the postgresql-common package that will make the
installation fail with a meaningful message if an invalid postgres
user already exists. However, there is not much more I could do about
that.

Thanks,

Martin

It turns out that pwc-source installs an override in
/usr/share/modass/overrides (actually, a symlink to
/usr/share/modass/packages/default.sh. This seems strange in itself, but I
cannot judge whether this is a good or a bad thing).

While using module-assistant, it is not clear that pwc-source has an
override. The only indication that something is wrong, is that m-a says
pwc-source is not installed.

Bug#342113: gdm should Build-Depend on libxinerama-dev

2005-12-05 Thread Paul Evans
Package: gdm
Version: 2.8.0.6-1
Severity: important

Latest gdm (2.8.0.6-1) seems to have been built without Xinerama
support; earlier versions supported it. gdm does not currently
Build-Depend on libxinerama-dev. If I rebuild locally where
libxinerama-dev is installed then it correctly behaves with my
setup. Using the stock debian package, it does not.

No, that's probably the most likely explanation. Extending

Hi Daniel,

I've prepared an NMU to fix this bug in sword. The patch for the NMU is
attached, and I'll be uploading the package shortly to the NEW queue. If
you disagree with any of the changes made, please make a maintainer upload
in its place.

Cheers,

Bug#339555: mutt: Segmentation fault when displaying a iso8859-1 mail header

2005-12-05 Thread Alain Bench
On Saturday, December 3, 2005 at 10:39:57 +0800, WANG Xu wrote:

>| $ export LC_ALL=

The variable still exists, with an empty content. This should not
(in theory), but could (in practice), perturbate things. To really
remove those variables from environment do:

| $ unset LC_ALL LC_CTYPE LANGUAGE

>| LANG=zh_CN.GBK
>| LC_CTYPE=C
> It did not segfault, and print the iso char as:
>| Rog\250\246rio Brito

Steps:

-1) Semething converted the E9 char from Latin-1 to GBK.
-2) Mutt asked libc if the result is printable in current C locale.
-3) Libc replied that A8 and A6 are not printable in US-Ascii.
-4) Therefore Mutt printed octal escapes \250\246.

The important point here is: How did original Latin-1 get converted
to GBK. I mean: How could possibly Mutt know you use a GBK terminal.
There are 2 cases:

-a) You force "set charset=GBK" in muttrc: Remove this line. $charset
must be free to follow the current locale, whatever it is.

-b) Some filter does the conversion. Which one?

> Did this mean 1) The library think this char is in GBK charset.

Well a discrepency: Part thinks it's good GBK, part it's invalid
US-Ascii. In a correct C setup, the display should be masked by one "?"
(because the E9 byte does not exist in US-Ascii):

| Rog?rio Brito

> 2) This char cannot be found in my GBK fonts.

It surely exists in font, because at shell you can see a "lowercase
e with an acute accent" (a small slash above the e letter) doing:

| printf "\xA8\xA6"

BTW: On your GBK terminal, is it a "half-wide" character as Ascii e,
or full-width as Chinese chars?

Not annoying at all: This fact brings 2 small informations to the
puzzle. Precious, as any other precisions you give us. I still don't get
the full picture, since my best so far "invalid multibyte" hypothesis
seems dead. Let's dig a little more, if you accept.

While both your mails were perfectly valid UTF-8 mails. So the
segfault is not only with ISO-8859-1 chars. Yet another small piece for
the puzzle. :-)

Hum... Random idea. Could you check:

| $ printf "Rog\xE9rio\n" | iconv -f l1 -t wchar_t | iconv -f wchar_t -t gbk

Bye!Alain.

2005-12-05 Thread EspeonEefi
Package: gnome-desktop-environment
Version: 1:2.10.2.4

The Debian packages for Mozilla Firefox 1.5 have dropped the mozilla-
prefix. As they have now entered unstable, it would be nice for the
dependency on mozilla-firefox-gnome-support to be updated to a
dependency on firefox-gnome-support. I guess it's debatable whether you
should just apply this to the 2.12 packages, but it seems that the
experimental 2.12 packages also still depend on
mozilla-firefox-gnome-support.

Bug#338638: Upload of tetex-base to stable

2005-12-05 Thread Frank Küster
Hi,

I have just uploaded tetex-base_2.0.2c-8sarge1 to stable to address bug
#338638. This bug:

- is RC because it is a violation of the handling of /usr/local as
described in Policy 9.1.2, and because it causes the prerm script of
  tetex-base to fail in a non-recoverable way

- cannot be solved by adding an appropriate "failed-upgrade" section to
  a newer version of tetex-base.

The reason is that tetex-base_3.0-* in sid has file conflicts with
tetex-bin in sarge (and therefore declares "Conflicts: tetex-bin (<=
2.99-7)"), while tetex-bin_3.0 depends on functionality, specifically
TeX input files, provided by tetex-base only since version 3.0-4.

To solve this upgrade problem, apt(itude) will first remove tetex-base
("Dependency problems prevent..., but removing anyway as you
requested"), then unpack the updated tetex-bin package and then unpack
the new tetex-base. Because of this solution, from dpkg's point of
view the buggy tetex-base version in sarge is not removed during an
upgrade, but just on its own, and there is no "new prerm" to call with
  "failed upgrade".

A hypothetical alternative solution to an upload to stable would be to
take measures to make apt(itude) choose a different solution (namely
removing tetex-bin with --force-depends, unpacking tetex-base on top of
the old version, reinstalling tetex-bin). But AFAIK there is no way to
relyably do this, because apt(itude)'s choice depends on the installed
(and selected?) packages that depend on both packages, and may change
depending on the particular installation.

I hope that you consider this upgrade for a stable point release. Below
is the interdiff between the diff.gz files; we have also an added
vietnamese debconf translation for the version in sarge which could be
added, too.

Thank you in advance,
Frank

I agree that semantically, it should be '-e'.

Bug#342116: pstotext doesn't accept absolute paths or paths with ".."

2005-12-05 Thread Thomas Arendsen Hein
Package: pstotext
Version: 1.9-1sarge1
Severity: normal

This works:
pstotext file.pdf
pstotext ./file.pdf
cd / && pstotext path/to/file.pdf
pstotext < /path/to/file.pdf

But this doesn't:
pstotext /path/to/file.pdf
cd /path/to && pstotext ../to/file.pdf

The error message is:
GPL Ghostscript 8.01: Unrecoverable error, exit code 1

pstotext 1.8g-5woody1 doesn't have this problem.

The examples use .pdf files, but the same problems occur with .ps files.

Hi,

Probably a perl bug. Could you send me complete information about the
packages versions used ?
Also the output of 'strace -fF -o /tmp/st /etc/init.d/backuppc start'
would be useful.

Out of curiosity, what does "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" give you that
"fr_FR.UTF-8" does not? (e.g., what applications behave different,
  etc.)

  Because:

% sudo locale-gen | grep fr
  fr_FR.UTF-8... done
  [EMAIL PROTECTED] done

% env LC_ALL=fr_FR.UTF-8 locale charmap currency_symbol
UTF-8
€

% env [EMAIL PROTECTED] locale charmap currency_symbol

What is the point of having different versions of firefox installed in

Bug#256455: queue.3.gz is in both dqs and manpages-dev

2005-12-05 Thread Bruno Harbulot

tags 256455 + patch
quit

This patch should solve the name conflict: the manpage for 'queue' has
been renamed to 'queue.7'.
'queue' was probably better under the '3' branch of the man pages.
However, since it conflicts with manpages-dev, and since dqs is only in
oldstable at the moment, '7' seems to be an acceptable choice. As of
today, 'queue.7.gz' does not conflict with any package in the Debian
repository for oldstable, stable, testing and unstable distributions
(Intel x86).

Bruno.

-.SH DESCRIPTION
-These routines provide generic queue manipulation of (potentially)
-multiple queues. Each queue can hold arbitrarily sized elements, with
-individual elements within a queue varying in size. It is the
-programmer's responsibility to account for such differences.
-
-Queues are referred to by variables declared as QUEUE *; the type QUEUE is
-defined in to be a C structure.
-
-These routines are based upon the list(3) library. Although this list-based
-implementation requires minimal additional space overhead versus a dedicated
-queue library, greater flexibility and likely overall improved space
-performance is offerred, since the list(3) library implements this and other
-data structuring models with a common set of primitives.
-.PP
-.IR q_init
-initializes and returns a queue descriptor.
-.PP
-.IR q_enqueue
-enqueues an element, pointed to by

-and returns a pointer to the enqueued data. If
-.IR bytes
-is greater than 0, then data is copied into the queue, otherwise only
-the reference
-.IR data
-is copied into the queue. This allows the user to determine the memory
-allocation policy.
-.PP
-.IR q_dequeue
-dequeues the element at the front of
-.IR q
-and returns a pointer to the removed data.
-.PP
-.IR q_front
-returns a pointer to the element at the front of

-but does not remove the element. \c

-This routine is implemented as a macro. \c

Since noone seems to have reproduced this problem, and the
debugging has not been successful, I doubt keeping this
bug open will have any benefit.

Please reopen this bugreport if there's something new.

Yes, It's utf-8 indeed. And it will segfault even if I unset LC_ALL

Yet another full-width Chinese char, e with accent.

Thanks for your explanation and hope the informations helpful.

Thanks,

I will look into it and try your suggestion. For what it is worth, I am
using the

default settings for everything that I can, and IMHO defaults should work!

I have two machines with the said package installed which are
affected. One i386 one amd64. I can reproduce it at will --
downgrading fixes it, upgrading breaks it.

I made it grave because it's a major PITA. The only workaround is to
select the URL an drag the text to the window.

Bug#342110: kde does not like [EMAIL PROTECTED] locales

2005-12-05 Thread Jean-Christophe Dubacq
Well, there has been some time since I tested this. Maybe the
fr_FR.UTF-8 and [EMAIL PROTECTED] are identical, now.
I will do a thorough test some time this week (I have kde and gnome
users). However, why does KDE not support the locale variant?

Thanks for caring,

Subject: Bug#341392: linux-2.6: kernel BUG at mm/slab.c:1807!
Date: Wed, 30 Nov 2005 13:14:02 +0100
From: Frans Pop <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.14-4
Severity: serious

The following error happens on Debian Installer boot in vmware (386 kernel).
This problem was not present in -3.

The system does come up after the error, but it looks so basic (memory
management AFAICT) that I've set RC severity anyway.
Feel free to adjust if you disagree.

Cheers,
FJP

Bug#342119: Some modifications to updategeoip

2005-12-05 Thread Alexander A. Vlasov
Package: geoip
Version: 1.3.14-1
Severity: wishlist

updategeoip tool included in geoip-bin binary package can only update
your database if you purchased license; however, it's possible to update
the database without purchasing license using GeoLite database freely
availble from MaxMind website (see
http://www.maxmind.com/app/geoip_country).

So I propose to modify updategeoip tool to download Lite version if no
full version available (no license key). This functionality would be very
helpful.

If you drop any single one of the parameters, it works. Dropping -O2 to

I wasn't able to find a simpler file that illustrated the problem, but
the attached are pretty short.

This code works fine on the other ports.

Agreed.

Agreed again.

The bugs are, I think, distinct so I'm going to leave them
sepereate. I will, however, close both bugs with the next upload to
Debian which I'll send off in about 5 minutes.

JED: Please let me know if you take this page so I can sync it and
remove the patch from the Debian/Ubuntu diff.

Bug#339293: New version of spandsp available

2005-12-05 Thread Caio Begotti

http://caio.ueberalles.net/asterisk/spandsp/

The above URL contains all my recent work on SpanDSP stuff, and the newer
version of the library is packaged there (actually 0.0.2pre21c). It seemed to
pass through the tests of Linda and Lintian, but could require some testing.
The dependencies version are satisfied by the available packages on Sarge too
(I'm building everything using Sarge, but I've tested it on Unstable too and
worked fine).

My diff.gz converts the package to the CDBS framework used by many package
maintainers to make easier the handling of debian/rules. It also splits the
packages so that we have now a -doc one with the API of SpanDSP written by
the upstream author.

Tzafrir made it clear enough that the 0.0.2 is the one to be packaged and
since there's a snapshot directory available inthe upstream' site
(http://soft-switch.org/downloads), with the latest code, someone could want
it, but in a libspandsp0-snapshot package instead. IMHO.

I'm sorry for posting these informations in the regular mailing-list some days
ago, not in this bug report :/

Regards,

Come on, it's annoying, not RC.

Have you tried version rc3 ?

Bug#279812: O: sfio -- Enhanced library for managing I/O streams.

2005-12-05 Thread Oliver Kiddle
If there is any interest in sfio, let me know. It would be best handled
as part of the same package as ksh. Ksh (also from AT&T) uses sfio and
the source is largely distributed as a single tarball. Being a new
maintainer, I wanted to keep things simple by just packaging ksh but all
the AT&T utilities (such as nmake etc) could be built from one source
package.

Bug#341777: Support Mysql for WebApps deployed to Tomcat

2005-12-05 Thread Andreas Schildbach

Wolfgang Baer wrote:

if you need stuff in your webapps you
should put it in or link it from the webapps libs/classes directory to
get it picked up. This is also some kind of security problem as
common/lib is trusted.

First of all, it is both common and recommended practise to _not_
include the database driver with the application, but instead aquire
connections from a container provided DataSource instead. If you're
going to use Tomcat's JDBC realms, you will not even have an alternative
than putting the database driver (or a symlink) into common/lib.

You would have a dangling symlink if libmysql-java is not installed
or removed after some time.

I understand your point. Then what about a separate package just for the
symlink? The package could depend on both tomcat(5|4) and libmysql-java,
so it would disappear if either the database driver or tomcat is
uninstalled.

Another point is where would you draw the line ? If linking libmysql-java
why not also jdbc for postgresql, sapdb, hsqldb ...

Indeed, there should be solutions for each major database, at least for
all of the "official Debian supported" DBs. Maybe one package for each
supported db?

you can add almost
every

library to this list.

Indeed, there are more cases like this. It is also common practise to
get JavaMail Sessions from a DataSource. I know JavaMail is not and will
probably never be packaged by Debian, but there is an os implementation
of JavaMail which fills the gap.

How would Octave be able to know that it has been started in this way?
As far as I know, the only information Octave gets is what is passed
to it in argv. In this case, the kernel (or the shell) starts Octave
with whatever follows the #!, plus the name of the script file. So I
think you have to include the -q yourself.

Now, if you mean you would prefer to have every noninteractive
invocation of Octave omit the copyright notice, then that would be
possible. I don't see the reason it is needed, since -q is available.

Bug#342124: icewm-themes: twilite theme very slow using a X terminal on Sarge

2005-12-05 Thread Frédéric Boiteux
Package: icewm-themes
Version: 1.2.20.1-1
Severity: normal

Hello,

I'm using X-terminal (also called 'thin client'), connecting to a
machine which runs Woody, with an Icewm window manager and the 'twilite'
theme. Since some time, I tried to use another machine which has been
updated to Sarge, but the X session was quite unusable : the latency was
very high (I can see how each widget of a window is displayed !),
especially when moving the mouse cursor from one window to another (I
use the 'pointerFocus' focus policy). I thought of a network problem, a
NFS problem, but I finally found that using another theme (like
blueCrux), it works fine (it's not as fast as using X11 server of the
machine, but it's usable like the Woody version) !!
Looking for the problem, I copied the twilite theme in my private
.icewm dir to do some tries, and eventually found that copying frame*
files from blueCrux to twilite theme solves the problem ! As I don't
know exactly which is the problem and how is built a theme (the
documentation isn't verbose about it), I can only report it.

  with regards,

Fred.

Hi,

I generally don't backport changes (even ones like this) from CVS into
Debian releases until it's been "a while" since the bug was fixed and
upstream hasn't yet made a release. This is because there are always a
lot of ongoing changes in CVS, and many people ask for the changes to be
propogated to Debian, making it difficult to keep up with requests.
Besides that, upstream changes have been tested against the CVS version
of other XMLTV code, not the version in the Debian package, often making
QA somewhat problematic.

I understand that Chris Butler <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> is planning on taking
over the XMLTV packages soon (they've been up for adoption). He may
feel differently about this policy and may want to make this change
along with his first upload. I've CC'd him so he's aware of your
request.

I'm sorry to give you this answer -- I know it's not what you were
hoping to hear. However, I hope you understand my motivation for this
policy.

Thanks,

KEN

It is indeed the case that these libraries/headers are only provided for the
use of plugins.

I believe this means that nothing needs to happen wrt the transition and this
package can just be updated as usual... Is this correct?

While it is a good start for UTF-8, it will require more work to
integrate. For example, the patch to buffer.c:forward_columns does
not appear to properly handle tab characters, embedded backspaces,
etc. Such backspaces are used by manpages to simulate an overstrike,
underline, etc, e.g.,

This is B\bBO\bOL\bLD\bD
This is BOLD\rBOLD
This is U\b_N\b_D\b_E\b_R\b_L\b_I\b_N\b_E\b_D\b_

Accounting for such constructs greatly complicate searches, etc. I
welcome the new manpage format that use ANSI escape sequences but I do
not know how widespread their use is.

Thanks,

That's true, and also easy to fix. I think I over simplified that one.
It should be the only case, though, note that SLutf8_skip_char*s* is
only being called from forward_columns; the rest of the calls to
SLutf8_skip_char are integrated in the loops so that single-byte
characters remain handled exactly as before.

I'll get back to you with a patch on top of most 4.10.2-2 soon, probably
tonight.

If you can find more pathologic cases, please send me a case to test.

It's not a big deal. I think this (and the other things I mentioned)

okay, i wasn't sure if the bugreport in question was in fact the
same problem, or if it's an unrelated one. i've noticed that
mysql seems to crash quite a bit :)

This boils down to:

void f() {

}

probably be a better error message, but I wouldn't give it very high
priority... Or maybe there is some way to "escape" the symbol name?
