Hmmm, you don't exactly explain what does the "Failed to reboot" title
you gave to your bug report mean.

Added as suggestion to pkgsel

Already suggested in #321109 Unfortunately, it seems that
the grub-installer package needs some attention and bugs cleaning.

Bug#349250: installation-report: failed to detect volume device

In short, the sound didn't work.

Which is not "grave" per se and anyway doesn't pertain to the
installer itself but more to the sound packages

Unfortunately, sound setting is probably still not straight out of the
box

I have no clue about all this, given the nightmare that sound handling
is in Linux ;..so I even don't know where this should be reassigned...

Bug#349305: sl-modem-source: Oops with 2.6.15 kernel and ALi5451 with ALSA

2006-01-21 Thread David Liontooth
Package: sl-modem-source
Version: 2.9.9d+e-pre2-2
Severity: normal

On a Debian 2.6.15 kernel and the ALi5451 chipset, I get an oops when
inserting the slamr module.

Let me say at once this may be due to a problem in ALSA, as I get this
on boot, so maybe the bug report should just go there (I'll report
separately to lkml):

AC'97 1 does not respond - RESET
AC'97 1 access is not valid [0x], removing mixer.
ali mixer 1 creating error.

On the other hand, the mixer and other parts of alsa actually work fine.

On boot (if not blacklisted in udev):

Well, this will be for another release, then. As noone answered here,

To me, that suggested the menu policy. "menu manual 3.7" would clarify

Bug#349304: nautilus: trailing slash stripped from urls being passed to web browsers

2006-01-21 Thread Caitrin Torres
Package: nautilus
Version: 2.12.2-2
Severity: minor

When a link to a website on the Gnome desktop is clicked, if the url
associated with it has a trailing slash, that slash is stripped from
the url before the web browser gets it. This is a problem with
websites that require the trailing slash on urls. I believe the bug is
with nautilus as opposed to the browsers since both browsers I tried
(mozilla-firefox and elinks) work correctly when sent a link from
urlview in Mutt and neither work when sent a link from Nautilus.

To reproduce:
1. In Firefox or another browser that allows you to drag a link from
the program to the desktop, go to a url ending in a slash.
2. Drag this link to the desktop.
3. Check the url associated with the newly-created link. Note that it
ends in a slash.
4. Doubleclick the link to open it. Note that the url the browser goes
to does not end in a slash.

This is not a new bug with the upgrade to Gnome 2.12.

Yes, I understand that. And also GTK IM mode has its own limitations.
I actually use XIM mode even in GTK programs. :-)

Then I think you would be very happy to know that scim 1.4.4-1
(currently in unstable) has exactly this new feature. Just right click
the systray icon and choose "Hide panel".

Sure, I agree this is a bug, and I treat bugs that only happen in XIM
mode very seriously (as I said, I use XIM mode myself). But this is
probably harder to fix than you thought, since XIM is known to have a
lot of limitation and corner case bugs. We will see.

Thanks for the follow-up,
Ming

Hi Bin,

Thanks for the follow-up and additional information. This is probably
just a limitation in XIM protocol, but it's still good to ask and
document it clearly.

Yes, I knew this bug only happens in XIM mode, and said so in the bug

Bug#349303: lsh-server: lshd leaks fd:s to user shells

2006-01-21 Thread Stefan Pfetzing
Package: lsh-server
Version: 2.0.1cdbs-3
Severity: grave
Tags: security
Tags: sarge
Tags: confirmed
Tags: pending
Justification: denial of service

As reported by Niels Möller, the author of lsh-utils, a user is able to
access fd:s used by lsh.

When logging in through lsh-server a user is able to tamper with
/var/spool/yarrow-seed-file, which can be used to prevent the server
from starting or allow the user guesses about the encryption used by
lsh-server.

Therefore its strongly suggested to apply the patch from Niels.

Unstable will get a new version including the fix soon.

Bug#349302: itcl3-dev: Can't find a usable itcl.tcl

2006-01-21 Thread Kari Pahula
Package: itcl3-dev
Version: 3.2.1-3.1
Severity: important

Now, I admit that this bug report may be bogus, as I am no expert on
Tcl and can't really tell if I'm mistaken myself somehow.

That being said, here's a little program I wrote (to test iwidgets
really, but I didn't get quite that far with it):

// conftest.c
#include
#include

int main() {
Tcl_Interp *interp;
const char *cmd = "package require Iwidgets";
interp = Tcl_CreateInterp();
// Why do I get an error (too) if I remove this?
Tcl_Eval(interp, "lappend tcl_library /usr/lib/tcl8.4");
if (Itcl_Init(interp) == TCL_ERROR) {
  printf("Itcl_Init call failed, error:\n%s\n", interp->result);
return 1;
}
if (Tcl_Eval(interp, cmd) != TCL_OK || interp->result[0] == '\0') {
  printf("Tcl_Eval failed\n");
return 1;
}
return 0;
}

I compiled it with gcc -o conftest -g -I/usr/include/tcl8.4 conftest.c -ltcl8.4
-litcl3.2

The output I get from that is:
Itcl_Init call failed, error:
Can't find a usable itcl.tcl in the following directories:
/usr/lib/itcl3.2 ./../lib/itcl3.2 ./../library ./../../library
./../../itcl/library ./../../../itcl/library
This probably means that Itcl/Tcl weren't installed properly.
If you know where the Itcl library directory was installed,
you can set the environment variable ITCL_LIBRARY to point
to the library directory.

The relevant parts of a strace dump:
lstat64("/usr", {st_mode=S_IFDIR|0755, st_size=131, ...}) = 0
lstat64("/usr/lib", {st_mode=S_IFDIR|0755, st_size=81920, ...}) = 0
lstat64("/usr/lib/itcl3.2", {st_mode=S_IFDIR|0755, st_size=60, ...}) = 0
stat64("/usr/lib/itcl3.2/itcl.tcl", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=5000, ...})
= 0
open("/usr/lib/itcl3.2/itcl.tcl", O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = 6
fcntl64(6, F_SETFD, FD_CLOEXEC) = 0
ioctl(6, SNDCTL_TMR_TIMEBASE or TCGETS, 0xbff73878) = -1 ENOTTY (Inappropriate
ioctl for device)
brk(0x808f000)  = 0x808f000
read(6, "#\n# itcl.tcl\n# -"..., 4096) = 4096
read(6, ""..., 4096) = 904
read(6, "", 4096)   = 0
close(6)= 0

After which it tries to open itcl.tcl from the places listed above.

This is not supposed to happen, right?

Also, if I comment out the first Tcl_Eval call, I get:
Itcl_Init call failed, error:
can't read "tcl_library": no such variable

i tried again from a new config, and could reproduce. then i remembered.
the problem is that i have a line 'Server 192.168.0.11' in
/etc/cups/clients.conf, whereas the server can not be reached as i am
not on this network at the moment.

it may sound like my config is wrong, but i expect quite a few laptops
will actually meet this situation.

i already reported a bug about this (#292367) against gnome-cups-manager
just about a year ago. it would be really nice if somehow it would take
less than 12 minutes to pop out with the message 'cups server cannot be
contacted'...

Ross, any idea on this?

Bug#231806: samba: 'findsmb' program missing

The only things in source/scripts that are of general-purpose quality
are smbtar and findsmb. Since we already ship smbtar in smbclient and
findsmb is just a small wrapper around nmblookup and smbclient, I
suggest that we just add findsmb to the smbclient package and be done.

Bug#349301: quodlibet-plugins: random album plugin doesn't respect one-song mode

2006-01-21 Thread Zack Weinberg
Package: quodlibet-plugins
Version: 20051218-1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

If you have the random album plugin enabled, you're in the album view,
and you ask for one-song playback, quodlibet finishes the current song
(if any) and then proceeds to play track 1 of a random album. When that
track finishes, it will play track 1 of a different random album, and so
on forever. This is not what the user wants when they select one-song
mode.

The cause is, the random album plugin assumes that if quodlibet stops
(song_started event with None for the song) it is because it reached
the end of the album. With one-song play mode, that assumption is
not true. A straightforward fix is below: it checks whether we are
in one-song mode and does not select a new random albom if so.

(If quodlibet ever grows a true 'stop' control, the plugin will again
have to be revised, but for now, I believe there are no other cases
to consider.)

Bug#349299: dpkg

2006-01-21 Thread Clytie Siddall

Package:dpkg

While translating the file dpkg, I encountered the following typo,
which I thought you might like to eliminate in a future release.

Well, Policy says that it's recommended and dpkg-genchanges puts it into
the *.changes file. It is used by archive software that doesn't use pools
to figure out what section to put the source package in, and while Debian
proper doesn't care about pre-pool archiving any more, it is still useful
for small archives.

If it *isn't* important enough for lintian to check for, Policy should
probably be modified to make it optional instead of recommended.

Bug#349297: dvd+rw-tools: Version 6 available upstream

2006-01-21 Thread Ross Boylan
Package: dvd+rw-tools
Severity: wishlist

It would be great if you could package the latest release from
upstream. I've been advised to try it because I'm having problems
burning data DVD's, along the lines of a number of other bug reports
here.

I have a Pioneer drive, which seems to have particular "issues," and
the changelog at
http://fy.chalmers.se/~appro/linux/DVD+RW/tools/growisofs.c includes,
for 6.0,
* - refine Pioneer strategies;

I'm probably going to give the new version a try.

Hmmm... I disagree. Do you have any reference to substantiate this?
Making unsubstantiated judgment on this list is not a good idea.

Please reread the license of this file:(Emphasis, me)

This means there is no explicit permission if fee is charged.
Permission is granted for "without fee" only. So this software is
without license and undistributable for my understanding for people who
charge fees. I think lha in non-free is a good reference for my
judgement. Can you point me to a package in main with this kind of
license only?

> Not that you may not sell copies.

Well, what about CD distributor who trust us making judgment to be in
main. There are people charging fees to distribute packages in main.

> So it is GPL compatible.

The software combining code with restriction (non-fee) and GPL is, I
think, incompatible. That is my understanding. Is this some new
debian-legal standard.??? Please do not make comment which is
misleading to others.

I think this is practically dual licensed by reading both source. But
including code with above mentioned strange sentence only causes
unneeded concern thus it is best fixed clean.

> If the version in Debian depends on python 2.4, then this is fine.

Why you make such an unsubstantiated FUD.

> I think it is best just to
> update the copyright file.

No. Some parts of upstream source requires to use python 2.4 anyway
and it is forced to do so already for Debian.

Anyway, there is no REAL LIFE issue. There is license outside of
package which is GPL compatible. As long as that is mentioned
somewhere, we have no issue. I have already send message to upstream
that using version in python 2.4 eliminate all issues from the root
cause.

Interesting one. Turns out it's because the BTS has changed its HTML
formats so dch needed to be updated to recognise it. Fixed in SVN.

Hmm.. punt it to the maintainers of the printer daemon packages, and ask
them to install sample scripts under /etc/samba instead for us? :-)

Hi Mathias,

I'm going to go ahead and upload an NMU for this bug as part of the weekend

Bug#349291: kmtrace: Can't open ktrace.out

2006-01-21 Thread Jason Dorje Short
Package: kmtrace
Version: 4:3.5.0-3
Severity: important

Every time I run kmtrace (with or without parameters) it exits immediately
with the message "Can't open ktrace.out".

I don't know why this happens but at the very least it is misleading. I
certainly _can_ `touch ktrace.out` in the current directory. Or is the
file supposed to go somewhere else? How do I find out what the problem is?

Bug#349283: tor: Tor security advisory: hidden services can be located quickly

2006-01-21 Thread Chris Howie
Peter Palfrader wrote:

Nonetheless it is a serious security hole for people who *do* run hidden
services. I thought grave might be a bit too high, but serious is specifically
for Debian Policy violations, and important seems a bit too weak. If there was
something between grave and important (e.g. "a security issue with a particular
menu item") I would have picked that.

In the abscence of such a severity I stand by my decision of grave. (Better it
be considered more severe than it is, than to be considered less severe than it
is.)

/var/log/XFree86.0.log or /var/log/Xorg.0.log are vastly more useful

The prototype of ((*candidate)->init) is

  typedef void* (*DSOInit)(int,void *);

Casting "this" to a long instead of an int does *not* fix this bug on 64-bit
systems, it just papers over it so that the compiler can't see it -- the
value of "this" will still be truncated to an int when passed to the
function!

Further investigation is needed here to determine a correct fix. The
obvious one would be to promote the first arg of DSOInit to 'long', but this
isn't necessarily correct either.

Bug#349289: firefox freezes when ctrl+p is pressed

2006-01-21 Thread Paul Brossier
Package: firefox
Version: 1.5.dfsg-4
Severity: important

Hi.

I know #344401 has been reported, but i don't really need printing
support. I just press Ctrl+P quite often by mistake, which completely
freezes firefox. It would be nice to prevent such a thing, regardless if
printing works...

Thanks, piem

Bug#349287: am-utils: amd segfaulting on amd64 (x86_64)

2006-01-21 Thread John Gruenenfelder
Package: am-utils
Version: 6.1.3-2
Severity: important

amd has been exhibiting some nasty problems on an amd64 machine running
the x86_64 port of Debian/testing. Specifically, it periodically
segfaults and must be manually restarted. The usage of amd on this
machine is important, but the machine is currently under a very light
load.

I see many messages in the log like this:

Jan 21 16:07:17 bach kernel: nfs: server [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/net not responding,

The not responding/OK messages occur once or twice an hour. Currently,
the other machines in our small cluster are not being used, so all of
the NFS traffic is local to this machine.

This configuration was previously used for quite some time on our old
hardware which was x86. On the new amd64 machine this has been run
under kernel 2.6.12 and 2.6.15 with similar results.

Bug#349286: tty not inherited

2006-01-21 Thread Marsh
Package: sudo
Version: 1.6.6-1.5
Dist: Woody

Sudo is apparently not hooking the tty to the child process any
longer. When I attempt to start a root emacs in X emacs exits with
the message:

emacs: standard input is not a tty

The command line alias reads as follows:

alias remacs='(unset -f
rm;TMPDIR=/tmp;HOME=/root;USER=root;MAIL=/var/spool/mail/root;export HOME USER
MAIL; sudo emacs -i -geometry 80x64&)'

In version 1.6.6-1.3 the above alias works as expected and starts a
root emacs in a new window.

So your options are
 - do not run a hidden service
 - wait for a few weeks or months until 0.1.1.x becomes stable and
   I upload it to sid
 - use 0.1.1.x now (from experimental or my backports archive
   http://wiki.noreply.org/noreply/TheOnionRouter/TorOnDebian

Also, Tor continues to be as fine as ever for people who don't offer
hidden services, so maybe grave is a bit strong.

This is a problem, though not all that serious. The copyright info
must be correct.

This is a fairly standard license. The usual way of interpreting it
is that you need not pay any fees in order to copy, modify, or
distribute. Not that you may not sell copies. So it is GPL
compatible.

If the version in Debian depends on python 2.4, then this is fine.
Upstream may balk at requiring 2.4 though. I think it is best just to
update the copyright file.

Walter

How did you determine that these symbols were no longer exposed?

Anyway, the presence of internal symbols in the exported ABI of libsmbclient

the use of a GNU linker script. Someone would need to go through and
determine which symbols need to be exported and which do not.

Bug#329833: dak should use 'close' with version, not 'fixed' tag, for NMUs

2006-01-21 Thread Guillem Jover
tags 329833 patch
thanks

Hi,

Attached is a patch that makes dak use the versioned closes instead of
the obsolete fixed tag. This is the relevant ChangeLog entry:

2006-01-22  Guillem Jover  <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

* katie.py (nmu_p): Remove unused class.
(Katie.__init__): Do not initialize self.nmu.
(Katie.close_bugs): Send a versioned close mail for NMUs and for
uploads to experimental.
* templates/jennifer.bug-close: Use __SUITE__.
* templates/jennifer.bug-experimental-fixed: Remove.
* templates/jennifer.bug-nmu-fixed: Likewise.

You'll have to remove the two templates files. And I've not executed it,
so please double check that the changes are fine, even if trivial. :)

I assume that not sending mail if changes["distribution"].has_key("stable")
is on purpose, but wondered about it anyway.

regards,
guillem

The LANG=C setting only affects chroot calls in pkgsel, not calls to
in-target which is used for all interaction and package installation.

These are the only chroot calls that are affected:

log-output -t pkgsel chroot /target dpkg-divert \
--package pkgsel --rename --quiet --remove "$divert"

log-output -t pkgsel chroot /target dpkg-divert --package pkgsel \
--rename --quiet --add "$divert"
config=$(chroot /target debconf-apt-progress --config| sed "s/$/;/")

log-output -t pkgsel chroot /target scrollkeeper-update -q || true

None of these output any text at all.

The d-i LANG setting is always C.UTF-8, no matter what language the
install is happening in. This is not an appropriate LANG to use in the
chroot, since it's not a valid libc locale.

I would add it to the next upload because it will be in the next
upstream release. The pro is to have a bug fixed earlier. I see nothing
against inclusion (beside the work;)).

The correct solution to this is to use fcntl and set the FD_CLOEXEC on
the file descriptor. Reassigning to flashplugin-nonfree, since this is
specifically its problem, and not a general problem with the Firefox
codebase.

Assuming that variable assignments are going to result in too many false
positives because of cases like this, the attached patch should fix this
problem.

I'm absolutely no pythonist... but apparently there are two issues at least.

First :

1)
/var/lib/zope2.8/instance/plone-site/Products/PortalTransforms/TransformEngine.py:18:
DeprecationWarning: The module, 'Products.CMFCore.CMFCorePermissions'

2) /var/lib/zope2.8/instance/plone-site/Products/CMFCore/utils.py:770:
DeprecationWarning: format_stx() will be removed in CMF 2.0. Please
use StructuredText.StructuredText.HTML instead.  DeprecationWarning)

3) /var/lib/zope2.8/instance/plone-site/Products/kupu/__init__.py:23:
DeprecationWarning: The Zope package has been renamed to Zope2. Import
of a package named 'Zope' is deprecated and will be disabled starting
in Zope 2.11.

I do not know if these are critical and fatal deprecation warnings.

Second :

/var/lib/zope2.8/instance/plone-site/var/Data.fs.lock

If I go and look the contents of that file:

Bug#349280: firefox: SIGBUS on File->Open/Save with SVG Gnome theme

2006-01-21 Thread Stephen Donnelly
Package: firefox
Version: 1.5.dfsg-4
Severity: normal

When using the Gnome SVG theme gtk2-engines-spherecrystal 0.7-11 firefox
will exit immediately with SIGBUS when the File->Open, Save, or Save As
menu items are selected.

Changing to a different theme corrects the issue.

I believe this was working with mozilla-firefox 1.07.

Bug#349279: tailor: _process.py seems under non-GPL license

2006-01-21 Thread Osamu Aoki
Package: tailor
Version: 0.9.19-2
Severity: important
Justification: DFSG 1 violation etc. by including _process.py

Please do not panic, it is easy to fix. :-)

Proposed fix: (in /usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/vcpx)
 * remove _process.py which cause useless license concern
 * possibly eliminate line 13-15 of shwrap.py for code clean.
 * ask upstream to change _process.py with the newer subprocess.py in
   2.4 python package which has GPL compatible license.

Explanation of fix:
_process.py was included to address shortcomings of pre-python2.4 but it
is not used in python2.4 environment. Currenty "tailor" package uses
python2.4 due to bzr support inclusion. Thus, this package will
function fine without _process.py and removal of _process.py will
eliminate license issue :-)

Explanation of license issue:
_process.py found in tha package has following license:
-

Although /usr/share/doc/tailor/copyright states GPL for tailor package,
this is not GPL for sure. --> problem.

This license only gives permission when fee is not charged. That seems
to be DSFG1 violation. Also mixing code of GPL and this seems to be
incompatible.

I looked further and found practically the same code is licensed under
# Licensed to PSF under a Contributor Agreement.
# See http://www.python.org/2.4/license for licensing details.
for python2.4. (subprocess.py) So no real issue should exist. Thus
marked this as "important" instead of "serious".

Cheers,

Osamu

Bug#349277: QuickBooks generate_new_iif.html fails on NULL in the transaction deleted field

2006-01-21 Thread curthauge
Package: interchange
Version: 5.2.0

The QuickBooks extensions page 'generate_new_iif.html' does not create the
desired result set when selecting "Generate any new IIF files". If the field

shouldn't be), the record will not be included in the .iif generation. I

Bug#343142: 343142: tagging upstream wontfix

2006-01-21 Thread Max Bowsher
tags 343142 + upstream wontfix
thanks

The issues raised have easy alternate solutions:

(1) Whilst Subversion doesn't understand -r "{`date`}", it does
understand -r "{`date -Is`}".

(2) Whilst Subversion doesn't understand -r "{3 days ago}", date can
help out there too: -r "{`date -Is -d '3 days ago'`}".

Granted, each does require _slightly_ more typing.

I'm setting 'upstream' 'wontfix' on this bug, by which I mean:
"Upstream does not currently have any plans to fix this issue - if you
truly feel that it would be worthwhile adding code to Subversion to
avoid the increased amount of typing needed for the above suggestions,
feel free to discuss it with us."

Max.

Bug#349043: Adding (commented) options about interfaces in the default smb.conf...

Sorry, I was actually reading again the section on "bind interfaces only".

  For file service it causes smbd(8) to bind only to the interface list
  given in the interfaces parameter. This restricts the networks that smbd
  will serve to packets coming in those interfaces. Note that you should not
  use this parameter for machines that are serving PPP or other intermittent
  or non-broadcast network interfaces as it will not cope with non-permanent
  interfaces.

> So, proposing this:

> # The specific set of interfaces / networks to bind to

I would say

 # This can be either the interface name or an IP address/netmask;
 # interface names are normally preferred

> # Only bind to the named interfaces and/or networks (see the
> # 'interfaces" option which MUS be set if you use this).
> # It is recommended that you enable this feature if your Samba

Maybe

 # Only bind to the named interfaces and/or networks; you must use the
 # 'interfaces' option above to use this.
 # It is recommended that you enable this feature if your Samba machine is
 # not protected by a firewall or is a firewall itself. However, this
 # option cannot handle dynamic or non-broadcast interfaces correctly.

Cheers,
