Bug#361048: locales: locale settings lost after upgrade
tags 361048 patch thanks Hi Denis, In that case, what business does the locales package have editing this file at all? As you can imagine, this is exactly what I am trying to fix. Right. The locales package still shouldn't be trying to clean up this config file, because two wrong writes to the file don't make a right write. :) So since there are still other packages that use /etc/environment (including the package it belongs to!), I think it's a release-critical bug for locales to edit it, and have marked the bug as such. And prepared a simple patch, which I've attached. Thanks, -- Steve Langasek Give me a lever long enough and a Free OS Debian Developer to set it on, and I can move the world. Bug#362408: xkb-data: Compose key not working any more in X.Org 7
Denis Barbier wrote: That's very strange. I have no rwin key here, but setting another key works in xterm. Maybe XCOMPOSEFILE variable is set in your enironment, or you have a $HOME/.XCompose file which contains wrong paths? I had the same problem today. I use my right Apple key as a Compose key to accent vowels on an xkb layout. I think the problem is a bit on the locales side not being setted. Vincent, could you please try to launch xterm as: $ LANG=en_US xterm And try to make the compose key to work? Bug#362558: par2: doesn't support reading from block devices directly
Package: par2 Version: 0.4-7 Severity: wishlist Tags: patch I accidentally deleted some files I had a par set for, so I wanted to use par2 on the block device the filesystem had been mounted on.[1] I created the attached patch do do that. This would be useful for verifying iso images when they're burned on CD, too. Anyway, my patch doesn't do all the autoconfing I suppose is needed for the headers it includes, since I just created it for my own use. I did try to stick to the coding style of the surrounding code, though. 2006/3/16, César Enrique García Dabó [EMAIL PROTECTED]: I am trying to use eclipse in my testing/unstable system. Each time I start eclipse with j2se it crashes randomly. Sometimes it doesn`t go beyond the splashscreen, other times it crashes just after the framework has been showed, and other times (not often) it crashes when trying to open a project or a menu option. I append the error report file created by java. Also a window is showed with the command line options, I reproduced it below. The java version used is: Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (Blackdown-1.4.2-03 mixed mode) The stack trace seems to end at org.eclipse.jface.bindings.keys.formatting.AbstractKeyFormatter.format(Lorg/eclipse/jface/bindings/keys/KeyStroke;)Ljava/lang/String;+57 , which doesn't execute any native code. So I can exclude any problem which may occur with the SWT libs. I would assume that it is an error of your vm. As we do not support closed source software, you have to contact someone else. I have tried with sable-vm, but it randomly get hang, without response. I have also tried with kaffe, but it runs tremondously slowly and finally it also crashes (I found no log file). I don't know much sablevm and it is known that kaffe is very slow. And a new package for kaffe 1.1.7 is not available ATM. I have good experiences with gcj and cacao, which you should try. Bug#358594: eclipse binary, desktop/menu things should be in eclipse-platform
2006/3/23, Matthias Klose [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Package: eclipse Version: 3.1.2 Forwarded from https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/eclipse/+bug/35871 I have just installed eclipse-platform-gcj on dapper and I have no /usr/bin/eclipse script anywhere on my system. It appears this is supposed to be in the eclipse-platform-common package but it's not. Even though it shouldn't be required, I tried installing the full eclipse package and sure enough /usr/bin/eclipse was hiding there. This is not a viable solution, however, as the eclipse package additionally requires me to install: ant-optional, eclipse-jdt, eclipse-jdt-common, eclipse-pde, eclipse-pde-common, eclipse-source, junit None of which I want to install. It seems that the core eclipse-platform files like /usr/bin/eclipse should either be moved back to eclipse-platform-common or the SDK files (and required dependencies) should be moved back into the eclipse-sdk package as it used to be. The eclipse executeable should be in the eclipse package. eclipse-platform-gcj is not a stand-alone package Through the installation of the eclipse package you ensure that you have everything installed. If you don't install all eclipse packages, then you will have missing dependencies in eclipse if you don't install for example the pde plugins. Eclipse won't work correctly without patching the features. And even if it works with patching of the features, I don't think it's a good idea, because other plugins can depend on the core plugins and then they will missing some plugins. @Michael: I really think its a better idea to a have one package, The current situation caused to much troubles. What do you think? Stephan Michels.

But we don't have any Valencian translation in D-I so I don't see the point in adding a new entry to the language list. I'm working on the translation, but I thought this ought to be sent first. AFAIK, currently if a [EMAIL PROTECTED] translation is added it won't be selectable. Besides this, the locale is a ca_ES locale variant, so it could be selectable in localechooser at medium priority. You mean in countrychooser/shortlist-ca ? This only asks for country, so it cannot distinguish between Valencian and non-Valencian speaking areas (both in eastern Spain). Also, Valencian speakers normaly identify their language as Valencian, not as Catalan. Requiring that they choose Catalan and then select their locale in a sub-menu might be confusing to some of them. Anyway, as far as I see, this locale is not even in locales (at least on my system). It will become available in localechooser as soon as it (localechooser) is rebuilt on a system with [EMAIL PROTECTED] listes in /usr/share/i18n/SUPPORTED They're in SVN pending upload. Hi Denis, The funny story is that I had that keyboard for one week, about 1 year ago :) Anyway, there are layouts with similar keys and different name in the upstream release (look up for Brother internet keyboard, another submit from me). Bug#361048: locales: locale settings lost after upgrade
[Steve Langasek] Right. The locales package still shouldn't be trying to clean up this config file, because two wrong writes to the file don't make a right write. :) I understand, and -7 has been uploaded yesterday with a slightly different fix: /etc/environment is not modified at all in postinst, but in config, default locale is read from /etc/environment when upgrading from locales 2.3.6-5 and from /etc/default/locale otherwise. A NEWS.Debian file has also been added, but I realize that its wording may be improved to tell that some applications may still read values from /etc/environment, will fix it later. 2.3.6-7 is waiting in the NEW queue. The second bug: if i would actually write the data to a remote server, that machine may or may not be in the same domain name as me (search field in /etc/resolv.conf), so it should be hostname -f, or even better an ip address. This is how i think the code should look like: ### ### perform a few sanity checks on the data ### # if dbserver is unset, that means localhost. if [ -z $dbc_dbserver ] || [ $dbc_dbserver = localhost ]; then # if the server is local, only allow connections from localhost dbc_dballow=localhost else # otherwise, only tell the remote database to allow from us dbc_dballow=`hostname -f` fi -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.15-1-k7 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C (charmap=ANSI_X3.4-1968) Versions of packages dbconfig-common depends on: ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.4.72 Debian configuration management sy ii pwgen 2.05-1 Automatic Password generation ii ucf 2.007 Update Configuration File: preserv dbconfig-common recommends no packages. -- debconf information excluded -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#362253: Neither discover1, laptop-detect, mdetect nor xresprobe are needed
severity 362253 important thanks On Friday 14 April 2006 06:52, Russ Allbery wrote: Well, I run discover on all my systems as a matter of course, so I suppose I'm not the most sympathetic of audiences. I've not had those problems with it. That is not an argument. If it were a dependency of a meta-package, at least you could remove it and only lose the meta-package. But xserver-xorg *depends* on it now, rather than just recommending it, so you're stuck with it. ...it sounds like your primary objection is to the boottime behavior, not to the use for X configuration. I do still see the case for changing from Depends to Recommends provided that the X configuration sequence supports it, but for your main complaint, can't you just disable the init script? Disabling init scripts is not something we should require of users. The proper way to deal with this is to _at most_ make it a recommends instead of depends. If the configuration scripts cannot currently handle a missing discover currently (which I doubt), then they should be fixed to fall back to manual configuration if discover is not present. The best solution of all would be to no longer use discover at all: the discovery of graphics cards has always been a by-product of discover rather than its main function. Its main function is hardware discovery and automatic kernel module loading with 2.4 and older 2.6 kernels. This function is obsoleted with recent 2.6 kernels for which udev is the preferred method. In Debian Installer the only reason we still install discover (discover1 even) is because it is needed for X configuration, but we'd rather drop discover altogether for 2.6 based installations. Note that this was more or less confirmed on debian-x earlier [1] although it was indicated that this does not have high priority. I very much hope a replacement will be realized in time for Etch though. In the mean time, recommending discover is acceptable, depending on it is not. Additional note. Depending on tools used for hardware discovery may not even be sufficient. If the tools are used in the preinst script, there is no guarantee that the tools will be unpacked at the time the X preinst script runs. Even if the tools are only used in postinst there is no guarantee they will be configured and thus in a usable state. This is why currently the installer installs mdetect and read-edid _before_ tasksel is run. Finally note that xfree in Sarge only suggests the discovery tools. $ apt-cache depends xserver-xfree86 xserver-xfree86 Suggests: discover Suggests: mdetect Suggests: read-edid [1] http://lists.debian.org/debian-x/2006/04/msg00046.html pgpO3EK1fCTf9.pgp Description: PGP signature

Bug#362476: yelp: does not display any help files
Hi. This would seem to be the same bug as has been reported earlier and if so, it should be fixed by upgrading the scrollkeeper package to version 0.3.14-10.1, which has recently been uploaded to unstable. Could you try upgrading scrollkeeper and see if that fixes it? I upgraded scrollkeeper and now the help topics are displayed correctly and I can browse through them but whenever I try to open a help page, the xml file is sent to firefox which can't display it correctly (see bugs #360769 and #361326). Bug#362578: ilohamail: [INTL:fr] French debconf templates translation
Package: ilohamail Version: N/A Severity: wishlist Tags: patch l10n Please find attached the french debconf templates update, proofread by the debian-l10n-french mailing list contributors. If you do not already use it, please remember about the podebconf-report-po utility, which helps warning translators about changes when you modify some debconf templates in your packages. See its man page for details. Then leave about one week for them to update their files (several translation teams have a QA process which requires time). podebconf-report-po will take care of sending the translators the needed material as well as getting the translators adresses from the PO files. It is. Could you then please at least comment a little about my migration scenario? Allright, if you don't see a need to comment, I'll just comment myself and reopen the bug. No problem. Refusing to install the package on a system that's not currently running a kernel 2.6.12 makes it impossible to migrate from lvm1 to lvm2 at all for users running their /usr and /var on lvm1 already: Current 2.6 kernels don't support lvm1, so these users are not able to mount their /usr and /var to be able to install Debian packages at all. Thus, these users are not able to install lvm2 once they've booted a recent 2.6 kernel. Thus, they are not able to install the package *after* booting into 2.6. Since you make it impossible to install the package *before* booting into 2.6, these users have no chance to install the package at all. Thus, they have no chance to migrate at all. That's why simply refusing to install on systems running too old kernels is just not acceptable. If you *need* to refuse to install on systems running kernels 2.6.12 because you would otherwise break things that did work before, you need to provide a different migration path. You could, for example, let this package carry an earlier lvm2 version that supports kernels 2.6.12 and you could provide another (third) package carrying a recent lvm2 version to close the migration gap. best regards Mario -- Programmieren in C++ haelt die grauen Zellen am Leben. The error message gives a hint to wizards to use TFtoPL/PLtoTF to fix TFM files but clearly I'm no wizard. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.16.5 Locale: LANG=en_US, LC_CTYPE=en_US (charmap=ISO-8859-1) Versions of packages lyx depends on: ii groff 1.18.1.1-11 GNU troff text-formatting system ii imagemagick7:6.2.4.5-0.8 Image manipulation programs ii libtiff-tools 3.8.2-1 TIFF manipulation and conversion t ii lyx-common 1.3.6-1.1 High Level Word Processor - common ii lyx-qt 1.3.6-1.1 High Level Word Processor - Qt fro ii lyx-xforms 1.3.6-1.1 High Level Word Processor - XForms ii mime-support 3.36-1MIME files 'mime.types' 'mailcap ii preview-latex-style11.82-1 LaTeX style files for editor embed ii tetex-bin 3.0-16The teTeX binary files ii tetex-extra3.0-17Additional library files of teTeX Versions of packages lyx recommends: ii acroread [pdf-viewer] 7.0.5-0.3 Adobe Acrobat Reader: Portable Doc ii aspell0.60.4-3 GNU Aspell spell-checker ii elvis [www-browser] 2.2.0-6powerful clone of the vi/ex text e ii firefox [www-browser] 1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.1-4 lightweight web browser based on M pn gnuhtml2latex none (no description available) ii gs-esp [postscript-vi 8.15.1.dfsg.1-2The Ghostscript PostScript interpr ii gs-gpl [postscript-vi 8.50-1.1 The GPL Ghostscript PostScript int ii gv [pdf-viewer] 1:3.6.1-13 PostScript and PDF viewer for X ii kdeprint 4:3.5.2-1 print system for KDE ii kghostview [pdf-viewe 4:3.5.2-1 PostScript viewer for KDE ii konqueror [www-browse 4:3.5.2-1 KDE's advanced file manager, web b pn linuxdoc-toolsnone (no description available) ii lpr 1:2005.05.01 BSD lpr/lpd line printer spooling ii mozilla-browser [www- 2:1.7.12-1.1 The Mozilla Internet application s ii opera [www-browser] 9.0-20060206.6 The Opera Web Browser pn rcs none (no description available) pn sgmltools-litenone (no description available) pn tex4ht | hevea | tth none (no description available) ii w3m [www-browser] 0.5.1-4WWW browsable pager with excellent pn wvnone (no description available) ii xpdf-reader [pdf-view 3.01-7 Portable Document Format (PDF) sui ii xpdf-utils [pdf-viewe 3.01-7 Portable Document Format (PDF) sui -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#362087: fglrx works with 7.0
Hi, just a quick note: The binary driver in fglrx-driver 8.23.7-1 works fine with 7.0 if you install it in the right location (/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers) and make a link from /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/dri to /usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri, as that path is hardcoded in fgrlx_drv.so.
