Bug#363271: zd1211-firmware: new upstream version available

2006-04-18 Thread Csillag Kristof

Package: zd1211-firmware
Version: 2.4.0.0-1
Severity: wishlist

As of 2006-04-03, a new version of the driver is availably at Zydas,
(more precisely, at http://www.zydas.com.tw/downloads/download-1211.asp):

Version 2_6_0_0

http://www.zydas.com.tw/web_driver/ZD1211_USB/Linux/ZD1211LnxDrv_2_6_0_0.tar.gz

I have not checked wherher the shipped firmware has changed, but
- if it has, it should be packaged
- if it has not, the version number of this package (zd1211-firmware)
should be updated.

Best wishes:

Kristof Csillag

Hi Michael!

Thanks for reporting this bug in Debian. However, I have reassigned it
to the right package, discover.

You could also provide more details, like the version of discover you
are using. You may be contacted by the discover maintainer in case he
needs more information on this issue.

Take care!

The cursors was working with /etc/alternatives If it will no work in
that way anymore maybe an advisory or an entry on the changelog must be
made.

I have another question: Why the cursors are in /usr/share/icons/ ?
This is the right location to place it ?
Doesn't make more sense /usr/share/cursors/ ?

Thank you for your great job working on Debian !

Bug#363277: gnuserv: FTBFS: conflicting types for 'strerror'

2006-04-18 Thread Andreas Jochens
Package: gnuserv
Version: 3.12.7-2
Severity: serious
Tags: patch

When building 'gnuserv' on amd64/unstable,
I get the following error:

With the attached patch 'gnuserv' can be compiled on unstable.

The patch removes the problematic declaration of strerror from sysfile.h.
The strerror function does not seem to be used anywhere in the gnuserv code.

Just upgraded, still unsolved, now resulting in the following error:

error opening security policy file /etc/X11/xserver/SecurityPolicy

This because the SecurityPolicy file isn't installed on my machine:
=
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dpkg -s xserver-xorg | grep Version

xserver-common is replaced by x11-common, which doesn't include the
SecurityPolicy file.

Nonetheless, there stays a wishlist bug:
"If the HTML-version is >= 4.0 create "“”" from "``''" in the

Bug#362837: fix: recompile

Yes, we had a bug report about the same problem, but not with much
details. I already got rid of mpn_sub_nc in the trunk (fixing a
potential bug at the same time); the patch will be applied later
to the branch.

Concerning the __gmp_rand, a patch will probably modify the PRNG.
I wonder if this is acceptable (however we don't say anything about
the behavior of the PRNG).

BTW, I think the use of GMP internals mainly comes from the time
MPFR was more or less part of GMP.

Bug#363280: konsole: Missing slave alternative /usr/share/man/man1/x-terminal-emulator.1.gz

2006-04-18 Thread Magnus Holmgren
Package: konsole
Version: 4:3.5.2-1

I think you should add

 --slave /usr/share/man/man1/x-terminal-emulator.1.gz \
x-terminal-emulator.1.gz /usr/share/man/man1/konsole.1.gz

to the update-alternatives command in konsole.postinst, because other
X-terminal packages do and it results in mandb reporting a dangling symlink
once a day if you choose konsole as the x-terminal-emulator alternative.

Even if this is a minor bug, since there exists a man page for konsole there
is no good enough reason not to add an alternatives link to it, IMHO.

A 8Mhz system can mix four to eight voices if you use some handmade
assembler hacks but will be 100% occupied with soundmixing. I doubt
OpenAL is using such efficient methods for mixing.

Another problem is the volumne: The typical onboard-sound-solutions do
not have the same behaviour than todays audio hardware, that is, if you
mix on a modern system four times the exactly same audiosignal then you
get a four times louder signal - I guess thats because they have spare
bits in the final DA-logics. Do this on old legacy hardware and you end
up with chopped spikes or have to reduce the volumne by downmixing the
waveforms (math takes lots of cycles), therefore producing very low
volumne. I remember I had to turn my volumne up nearly ten times to hear
anything after mixing 16 channels on my amiga 3000 and then I nearly got
an heartattack after the first "nonmixed" sound. All in all a not very
desirable solution. This may differ for add-on-soundsystems though.

I would prefer a patch to the m68k-OSS-legacy-drivers inside the
kernel to "accept" 16Bit-audio and "downmixing" it to the 8Bit because
8Bit-audio tends to cause trouble with recent software.

There are some Permedia2-solutions made for Amigas and you can use
nearly every PCI-card by using a PCI-daughterboard. ATI even had some
Amiga-specific drivers on their homepage and I am really talking about
recent hardware like Radeons.

Btw, with the PCI-Daughterboard you should be also able to use
PCI-Soundcards but I have never heared of any drivers for AmigaOS or
even bleeding edge tests under Linux. It is out there, should be mostly
compatible on port- and register-level but nobody has done anything yet.

> I believe 3D on m68k is rather useless nowadays, but if someone knows
> better than me, please shout now! :-)

Don't expect surprising results from m68k-3D. But games like Shogo and
Quake1 made good use of the Permedia and ATI-solutions and have been
pretty playable.

Btw, I only knew one person with a Permedia2-solution, he has sold
most of his stuff though and never would have even considered using
Unix. And I have only read about other addons like the
PCI-daughterboard, Zorro-Soundcards, PCI-ATI-cards and so on.

That stuff should be pretty ultrarare. Maybe you'll find five people
on the planet who would like to use it with m68k-Debian. All others are
happy with their legacy-sound and maybe a rough 2D-SVGA-addon based on
some ancient Cirrus-Logic or S3 chipset. Or in other words: There are
more important things to fix on m68k.

`.orig' is a suffix used by (amongst other things) patch, when it is
handling rejected patches. Many tools are set up to automatically
exclude or delete .orig files, including for example most revision
control systems.

You may remember me sending you a diff which tidies up the crud left
over by the Mozilla build system so that debian/rules clean actually
works; I suspect that the thing that deleted .orig in my environment
was that change to debian/rules, but it's by no means the only such
thing.

Using .orig for moving about.png aside is asking for trouble, I think.

Regards,
Ian.

Bug#354995: amd64-k8-smp kernel makes clock run fast

2006-04-18 Thread Andrew Schulman
I have this problem, and it is not caaauused by the ATI timer bug. I don't
have an ATI chipset, and none of the suggesssted fixes for the ATI timer
bug (booting with disable_timer_pin_1, noapic, acpi=off, notsc, etc.) has
any effect.

My system clock runs about 5% fast, with a lot of aariability. And as
you can see, typing is difficult because keypresses get repeated
sporadically, from 2-5 times each.

I'm running a customm 664-bit kernel 2.6.15 with amd64 userland. I
haven't been able to upgrade to 2.6.16 yet due to some iptables issues,
but will try that next. Meanwhile, I want to ask that this bug not be
closed. Although the ATI timer bug has been worked around, there are
sti some of us with the same symptoms that aren't causeddd by the ATI
timer bug.

Thanks,

Andrew.

Okay...

Not 100% correct. The problem of deinstallation is covered with the
symlink workaround since dpkg AFAICS follows the symlinks in the path
when removing a file.

It's only the other way round that does create headaches, future
installations of third-party packages which may try to install files
into X11R6/bin and may overwrite files from other packages. I thought
a while about that and could not come up with any sane solution, not
even hacking dpkg's .list files would help because of missing
information. Only blacklisting this directory in dpkg would have been a
"good" solution but it's too late for that.

"safe" does not mean reliable or usefriendly. I still think that the
current lone "rmdir" hidden in the postinst is not sufficient. What we
need is IMO a list of "dirty" files - files that have existed in Debian
in X11R6/bin directory before and which would certainly be uninstalled
by apt/dpkg during the upgrade. The debconf's config script should be
executed during dpkg-preconfigure (NOTE: not in the middle of upgrade!),
scan the existing /usr/X11R6/bin directory, substract the set of "dirty"
files and if there are still remaining files in the list, then the user
should be given a chance to abort the whole installation before it
starts. And a list of remaining files should be printed. Maybe together
with 3rd-party packages that those files may belong to.

If you wish me to implement a such solution, please say "do it" and I
will try to.

Eduard.

Bug#362425: ipmitool: wrong option variable in initscript (IPMIEVD_OPTS instead of IPMIEVD_OPTIONS)

2006-04-18 Thread Cyril Chaboisseau
Package: ipmitool
Version: 1.8.7-1
Followup-For: Bug #362425

I also had a problem when launching the ipmievd script (after each
upgrade) :

Paramétrage de ipmitool (1.8.7-1) ...

le sous-processus post-installation script a retourné une erreur de sortie
d'état 1
--%<-%<-%<-%<-%<-%<-%<-%<-%<-%<---

and it seems that it comes from the renaming of the variable
IPMIEVD_OPTS to IPMIEVD_OPTIONS which was not done everywhere in the
/etc/init.d/ipmievd script

(patch included)

Bug#363287: mpfr: FTBFS on s390, illegal instruction in umul_ppmm

2006-04-18 Thread Laurent Fousse
Package: mpfr
Severity: serious
Justification: no longer builds from source

Hello,

MPFR no longer build from source on s390. A complete build log can be
found at :

http://buildd.debian.org/fetch.php?&pkg=mpfr&ver=2.2.0.dfsg.1-5&arch=s390&stamp=1145312906&file=log&as=raw

I verified with the unmodified source for GMP and MPFR that it is not
related to the debian packaging.

The `Illegal instruction' or segfault errors occur in umul_ppmm
according to gdb (verified on tconst_catalan, tcheck and tmul). I
found the following changelog entry, maybe related :

2005-03-22 Patrick Pelissier <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
[...]
* mul.c: Fix bug on HP-UX.
longlong's umul_ppmm seems to be buggy on such a system.
Don't use it under HP-UX.

I'll try to find a testcase for umul_ppmm to see if we can forward this
problem to GMP.

Kernels with build-in module libata do handle libata.atapi_enabled=1 option.
Debian kernels have libata as a module.
The option libata.atapi_enabled does _not_ work for modules.
  Debian-installer has "S02modules-params"

The feedback from Fredrik do I read as

There is no S02modules-params in the rebooted system.

Or something else that wents wrong at reboot which needs love.

So what to do with kernel options that are not available in kernel module?

BTW: m68k, not m86k... a common typo ;)

There definitely add-on cards that can make full use of advanced audio, e.g.
the Toccata Zorro-II card for Amigas.

It is available, I think... at least on Ebay, but I can only speak for
Amigas, and as Christian Brandt already replied, there *are* some cards out
there, but I don't know if there used that much under Linux.

> Please note that I don't want to hurt the m86k port. I just think that

So I don't want to either. Therefore we should wait some more time before
removing stuff/adding it to p-a-s how the users of other subarchs are
thinking about this.

> this could help to keep up with other archs and reduce load from the

Yes, that's the real bottleneck atm for m68k. We need more porters whereas
we have a nice number of buildds now.

I think it would be ok for some less used, but long building packages when
those would be crosscompiled (if this is ok with policy and the
ftpmasters/RMs).

> Perhaps with the new coldfires there will be a use again for opengl

For building packages it doesn't matter if it's been build by a coldfire or
a real m68k, but as coldfires mainly being used in embedded devices, I doubt
there are many OpenGL capable coldfire systems, but I've to admit that I'm
totally new to coldfires...

The debianized latest version can be found here:

Be advised, this was build against unstable, thus you might have to
build it against testing yourself.

Right now I am having trouble finding a sponsor willing to upload, since
my regular sponsor is kind of busy.

If you disagree, there should be at least a hint in

After reboot glxgears is displaying the gears after all, but the warnings are

Hmmm, wasn't Roman Zippel about to port a PCI<->Zorro bridge (in software ;)
for the Wildfire060 card? The NIC and SCSI on that card are attached via
PCI<->Zorro (hardware) bridge and there are even two mini-PCI slots on the
backside of that card. I've been told that there should exist such a graphic
card for that accel card...

Bug#363292: debian-installer: strange /etc/modules generated

2006-04-18 Thread Fabian Fagerholm
Package: debian-installer
Severity: normal

Daily image used: 16 April 2006.

After installation (which went *really* nicely, thanks for that :)
/etc/modules had the following contents:

# /etc/modules: kernel modules to load at boot time.
#
# This file contains the names of kernel modules that should be loaded
# at boot time, one per line. Lines beginning with "#" are ignored.

ide-cd.load
ide-disk.load
ide-generic.load
psmouse.load
sbp2.load

What is the .load suffix? It seems to cause complaints during boot.

pgsql handler can't backup to the backupdir because the shell variables are not

because the command string is enclosed in ' not ". - my patch changes that and
adds eval

Bug#333392: RKWard debian packages

rkward 0.3.4 is not expected to compile with the current R packages in debian.
I have redirected the given path to where the new packages are, sorry about
the confusion.
What went wrong with the 0.3.5 packages, I do not know. I have recreated the
package, but now, of course, the source.tar.gz is slightly different from the
official tarball (no "real" differences, just some automake noise).

I wonder if the problem is because man is splitting the command line
itself rather than letting a shell do it. That's not a bug though...

In any case,it seems to me the best solution is to create a scrupt in
/usr/local/bin called vipager and set your pager variable to that...

when having i/o errors on the filesystem uucp will get stuck on the

how to actually work around this is to dequeue the file on i/o error as
it will definitly not make sense to retry.

This is intentional - xtrlock needs updating to use the new directory
structure of XOrg 7.0.

The changes need to be made in xtrlock; reassigning and merging with the
existing bug on this issue.

Bug#363306: Recommend or suggest xserver-xorg-dev for nvidia users somehow?

2006-04-18 Thread ADFH
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.0.14
Severity: wishlist

Upgrade today on unstable broke a few things - fair enough.. purge a
few packages and reinstall.. all nicey nicey now..

What didn't happen until I did some googling was the reinstallation of
nVidia binary driver. It would appear that the nvidia installer installs
the modules to the old place rather than the new place in directory
structure.

Ie.

(II) LoadModule: "nvidia"
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module nvidia
(II) UnloadModule: "nvidia"
(EE) Failed to load module "nvidia" (module does not exist, 0)

after nVidia binary driver installer successfully completed.

Looking at:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=838113&postcount=6
(based upon a google for ubuntu + error message above, given debian now
seems to be taking ubuntu dir struct etc.)

... and then seeing ..
http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/xorg/2005-November/011367.html

... and then searching packages.debian.org for xorg-server.pc, I installed
xserver-xorg-dev, and then the nVidia binary installer worked correctly..

I'm thinking this might be beyond a few people, and either nVidia should
include this in their README for Debian users or perhaps shove it in one
of the debian files.

I've put this down as wishlist as I understand it's not STRICTLY a bug
per se (but is a comment on something that previously worked and now
doesn't without some tweaking) - hopefully the fact it's here in
bugs.debian will make it easier for some folks to find "right now"
whilst things are settling (I know this is the first place I tend to
look when things break besides google).

Thanks for catching this error: the suffix should not be there.
Will be fixed with the next upload of debian-installer-utils.

Did you upgrade your BIOS? This completely solved the problem for me on a
Gigabyte K8NF9 Ultra board, nivida chips. ATI is only in the AGP slot.

disable_timer_pin_1 now actually prevents the machine from booting, so I had
to remove that again, no special boot options are needed and it works great.

Bug#363312: easytag: Tabular view for quick checking of tags

2006-04-18 Thread Erich Schubert
Package: easytag
Version: 1.99.12-1
Severity: wishlist

It would be helpful to have a tabular view, especially for checking that
both album and artist are written in a consistent way (caps, special
chars...)
You can do it somewhat for the artist (using the artist-album-view) but
you can't easily do it for VA-albums or even a series of them (e.g. the
Hôtel Costes series, or Café del Mar).
iTunes has such a view, and apparently people like it a lot (I've never
used it, but it seems useful to me):
http://www1.cs.columbia.edu/~paley/spring03/assignments/HW1/jeffrey/Interfaces.html

Note that font size is a key factor here, it might be useful to allow
the user to reduce the font size (I have 135 dpi, so my fonts are rather
large in pixels, so I could still read them at ~70% of their size, just
not as comfortable for regular work use)

Bug#363307: debhelper: dh_installudev postinst fails if /etc/udev/rules.d does not exist

2006-04-18 Thread Ron
Package: debhelper
Version: 5.0.31
Severity: normal

Hi, here's another one. If udev is not installed, then the symlink
creation on first install fails, so the postinst and package install
do too.

Probably best to create the rules.d dir if neccessary.

Alternatively we could not install the link if the dir is not there,
but knowing if the user removed it and wants it to stay gone seems
too hard to support reliably. They should remove the links, not the
dir if the current system is to remain...

Anyway, packages should be able to support udev without (pre)depending
on it. Other than that, I'll leave policy to you and Marco ;-)

cheers,
Ron

P.S. Geert: Don't create new bugs based on installation reports! Either

So would I.if only my SVN commit access was working...:-[

More unfortunately, I'm not sure that l10n bug reports are currently
being processedcan someone prove me wrong?

I also have questions about the package I'm asking translators to
report l10n bugs against. In the D-I l10n doc, I mention
xorg-x11however the source package for xorg stuff is now "xorg"...

Are we actually pointing D-I translators to the right package ?

XSF people, please point me in the right direction. I have the strange
feeling that we're not doing the Right Thing, here

Bug#363318: amphetamine_0.8.10-8.1(m68k/unstable/vault13): FTBFS on m68k

2006-04-18 Thread Stephen R Marenka
Package: amphetamine
Version: 0.8.10-8.1
Severity: important

amphetamine fails to build from source on m68k due to
ICE: output_operand: invalid expression as operand.

This has been a long standing bug in gcc-4.0. However, it doesn't exist
in gcc-4.1.

When gcc-4.1 becomes the default, no workaround should be needed, but
until then I'd at least like to do a binNMU build to get us in sync.

Here are selected excerpts from the buildd log.

It seems not to have this bug. Tested in a pbuilder chroot environment
on an AMD64.

I downloaded it and compiled it against testing.

It seems to have cured my problem, and I'm not suffering any side
effects so far. I'll drop you a line if I spot any oddities.

Thanks - great work!

Bug#363316: libxft-dev should no longer depend on x-dev, but on x11proto-core-dev

2006-04-18 Thread Jerome Warnier
Package: libxft-dev
Version: 2.1.8.2-6
Severity: minor

libxft-dev should no longer depend on x-dev, but on x11proto-core-dev,
as it is the last package to depend upon the x-dev transitional package
instead of x11proto-core-dev.

Maybe it fixes most problems in 0.5.0, so please package it whenever

Bug#363315: easytag: Musicbrainz lookup function

2006-04-18 Thread Erich Schubert
Package: easytag
Version: 1.99.12-1
Severity: wishlist
Tags: upstream

It would be nice if easytag had a "musicbrainz" lookup button. This can
be used to identify untagged files via an internet database.
The "picard" tagger for musicbrainz is pretty impressive at smart
tagging.

Culmus package does't provide these fonts (nor did it ever had).

How did you create this ps file ? Maybe it is something in the process ?
