Bug#365311: CVE-2006-1990/CVE-2006-1991: Security vulnerabilities in php

2006-04-28 Thread Stefan Fritsch
Package: php4
Version: 4:4.4.2-1
Severity: grave

Three security vulnerabilites have been found in php.
See http://www.infigo.hr/en/in_focus/advisories/INFIGO-2006-04-02

i. PHP4/PHP5 wordwrap() buffer overflow
CVE-2006-1990:
Integer overflow in the wordwrap function in string.c in PHP 4.4.2 and
5.1.2 might allow context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary
code via certain long arguments that cause a small buffer to be
allocated, which triggers a heap-based buffer overflow in a memcpy
function call, a different vulnerability than CVE-2002-1396.

ii. PHP4/PHP5 array_fill() DoS condition

Function array_fill() fills an array with 'num' entries with the value
of the 'value' parameter keys starting at the 'start_index'
parameter. It is possible to set a large 'num' value (counter for
while() loop) that will consume whole system memory in a few seconds
and make system unusable. It is important to notice that large memory
consumption is possible only on systems that have high value
of 'memory_limit' set in php.ini.

iii. PHP5 substr_compare() DoS condition
CVE-2006-1991
The substr_compare function in string.c in PHP 4.4.2 and 5.1.2 allows
context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (memory
access violation) via an out-of-bounds offset argument.

Bug#365086: keyboard misleaded (console and X) after upgrading from

2006-04-28 Thread Jurij Smakov

severity 365086 important
thanks

Hi,

This is not RC by any standard, so lowering the severity down a notch.

A few questions regarding your report:

* Are you absolutely sure that you get the same broken keyboard layout
both in console and X? Those two have very different input layers, so
that's somewhat surprising.

* What kind of keyboard is that (sun type)? Is it connected via USB?

* Try logging in via ssh and running 'dpkg-reconfigure console-data', then
choose 'Do not touch keymap' or 'Keep kernel's keymap' from the menu. Does
it help with your problem?

Best regards,

Agreed.

I'm first reassigning this to cdebconf even though I'm not sure this
really belongs to that package.

Indeed, at any point in the installer, all non ASCII input in select
questions is unproperly handled.

PS: I'm afraid I don't know the right syntax that allows to mention
that a bug is blocked by another block. Seems that the BTS online
documentation is not up-to-date when it comes at this feature.

Bug#365307: localechooser: Should build the list of languages, depending on the interface, at run time rather than build time

2006-04-28 Thread Christian Perrier
Package: localechooser
Severity: normal

This is Frans suggestion:

That said, having the language list in the templates file 4 times (though
with a different number of languages) is not really memory friendly. We
really should try to find a different solution for that, maybe by
building the list dynamically at runtime from a masterlist that has the 4
levels (ascii, latin, fb, all).
As the list is not translated anyway, that should not be a major problem.
The same variable translation that is currently done at build time, could
also be done at runtime.

Bug#365282: Fix for preinst bug

2006-04-28 Thread Steven Brown
This bug was due to some debconf migration code in config trying to
access the xserver-xorg/config/inputdevice/mouse/zaxismapping template
which might not exist (at least, I don't have it). Should be safe to
just ignore. Patch to config is attached.
Fix bug in xserver-xorg 1:7.0.15 package's config affecting preinst due to
xserver-xorg/config/inputdevice/mouse/zaxismapping not necessarily existing.

Bug#352833: xlibs: xkb no longer handles grp:shift_toggle)

2006-04-28 Thread Itai Seggev
I think this information (renaming the option) should be put in the
NEWS.Debian.gz file. When I first upgraded to 6.9 and discovered
shift_toggle no lnoger works, I looked first in the bug tracking
system[1], then NEWS.Debian.gz. This file mentioned major changes to
xkb and recommended installing xkb-data (which I think was in
experimental at the time, but was of no help in any event), but not
this specific fix. I think this is worth mentioning.

[1] I thought I had reported bug about this, but apprently I forgot to
the repeat was eaten by @[EMAIL PROTECTED] exim. Fortunately, exim no longer

Does this discussion mean the suggestion at the top of #199810 is wrong?
(ie. that RFCs not licensed under the license that first appeared (I think)
in RFC2220, October 1997 are OK)

Certainly I've been trimming the RFC list every new-upstream version removing
anything after that point...

Handily, I've got a new upstream version due for upload, so if I need to
whack the rest of the RFCs, now's a great time to do it.

Bug#365302: libapache2-mod-python: mod_python <= 3.1.4 with Apache2 mpm-worker segfaults

2006-04-28 Thread Bjorn Stabell
Package: libapache2-mod-python
Version: 3.1.3-3
Severity: normal

When using mod_python 3.1.3 and Apache 2 mpm-worker, we experienced
frequent segmentation faults (core dumps). Compiling the latest
Apache from CVS and using mod_python 3.1.3 gave the same result.

Switching to mpm-prefork fixed the problem. See stack trace that
shows problem occurs in threading library.

This could be related to a common problem with mod_python <= 3.1.4
and Apache 2 mpm-worker:

  http://svn.dscpl.com.au/vampire/trunk/patches.txt

In any case, I recommend we make mod_python require mpm-prefork, much
in the same way php does.

I think what Aaron meant was that the expression should be KERNEL=="...",
the attached patch for usbmount.rules works for me.

Also, since this bugs renders usbmount unusable, I am bumping severity

Bug#350778: seen in previous versions; fixed in newer gcc?

2006-04-28 Thread Bryan Donlan
Package: gcc-4.0
Version: 4.0.3-2
Followup-For: Bug #350778

Hi, I've seen this in the past; it seems to be that gcc is trying to use
'smart quotes' when in a unicode locale. However, with gcc 4.0.3-2 I
cannot reproduce it; it may have been fixed/changed at some point.

Bug#365301: Discrepancy between CUPS lpr command and Users Manual

2006-04-28 Thread Jack Carroll
Package: cupsys
Version: 1.1.23-12

This report is for the version of cupsys currently installed by
etch.
The version installed by sarge behaves differently.

The Software Users Manual says the lpr command has the same -o
options as the lp command. For the past several years, that was true.
Starting with this version, the lpr command rejects the -o argument
as a syntax error.
The lpr man page agrees with this behavior. For the version
installed by sarge, the -o option worked on lpr, but the man page didn't
show it.
It appears that CUPS has reverted the lpr command syntax to emulate
the old BSD lpr command, but has not updated the Users Manual to reflect
this change.

Bug#365300: Only Gutenprint PPDs accessible from CUPS

2006-04-28 Thread Jack Carroll
Package: cupsys
Version: 1.1.23-12

This report is for the version of cupsys currently installed by
etch.
The version installed by sarge does not exhibit the bugs reported
here.

Attempting to add or modify an H-P 5100 printer using the GUI config
tool does not display any H-P 5100 driver. Only the Gutenprint drivers are
displayed, even though the foomatic-filters-ppds package installed
automatically with cupsys, and the foomatic ppds are in their proper place
in the file tree. In fact, the GUI configuration tool does not search the
/usr/share/ppd tree at all.
This is a much more severe bug than 358186, because Gutenprint supports
only a small fraction of the HP printers that foomatic and hplip do.
However, bug 358186 is still present in addition to this new one; the
required symlink is not provided.

I worked around the problem by copying foomatic's H-P 5100 ppd.gz file
to
/etc/cups/ppd, unzipping it, and symlinking it to lp.ppd (renaming the
original lp.ppd). I was then able to configure the printer using the GUI
config tool, specify which trays were present, and set tray selection to
"auto". With that done, a command of the form:
lp -o media=Middle /etc/network/interfaces
pulled paper from Tray 2, as it was supposed to.
However, the tray names were different from the ppd file supplied
with Sarge. The more intuitive
lp -o media=Tray2 /etc/network/interfaces
worked under Sarge; these tray names are not defined in the new ppd file.
Unnecessary changes are a nuisance.

Bug#365296: alsa-base: Run 'alsactl names' on device add/remove

2006-04-28 Thread Sam Morris
Package: alsa-base
Version: 1.0.11-1
Severity: wishlist

While trying to find out what the best/official way for an audio
application to discover what devices are available on the system, I
stumbled upen a thread on alsa-devel [0] that states that the
right way to do this is to call the snd_names_list function, present
since ALSA 1.0.9.

This file relies on the existance of /etc/asound.names, which can be
generated by running 'alsactl names'. I suggest doing this whenever
an ALSA device is added to or removed from the system, thereby keeping
the file up to date at all times.

In case the administrator wants to modify the file, I suggest running
something like 'alsactl --file=/var/lib/alsa/asound.names' and having
/etc/asound.names be a symlink to that file; the link can be replaced
by a regular file if the admin wants to maintain it himself.

Bug#357623: An update, please?

2006-04-28 Thread Daniel Kahn Gillmor
Hi there--

This bug (and its merged fellow) appears to be the only thing keeping
Thunderbird 1.5 out of etch. It has now been tagged pending since 19
March, which is well over a month ago. Can we expect a version with
this simple dependency change to go into sid soon? If there are other
things delaying the update (e.g. other serious/grave bugs which you
feel need fixing before the next upload), could you please file them
with the bts, so that it's clear what the package is really waiting
on?

Thanks for your work maintaining thunderbird for debian!

But the installation size of amule-daemon is "Installed-Size: 3660"

wxWidgets, it is still weird. Please stop saying it is small unless it

Bug#365288: xfaces: please update for X11R7

2006-04-28 Thread Aaron M. Ucko
Package: xfaces
Version: 3.3-25
Severity: grave
Tags: patch
Justification: renders package unusable

Greetings.

As you may have heard, Debian is in the midst of a transition to
X11R7.  One aspect of this is moving out of the /usr/X11R6 hierarchy;
recent versions of x11-common enforce such a move by conflicting with
existing versions of packages such as xfaces that install into
/usr/X11R6/bin, which is now a symlink to /usr/bin.

Because xfaces uses imake, rebuilding against a recent version of
xutils-dev will get it most of the way there, but it's not quite
sufficient; the attached patch addresses the remaining issues.

Could you please apply it, or authorize an NMU?

Thanks!

Well, I keep making the packages. But they are not in such a good shape
I am
happy with. Maybe it is time to release them and go into a cycle with several
releases...

Bug#365293: pango1.0: Please add add udeb: lines to shlibs file

2006-04-28 Thread Frans Pop
Package: pango1.0
Version: 1.12.1-2
Severity: important
Tags: patch, d-i

Please add the following lines to your shlibs file:
udeb: libpango-1.0 0 libpango1.0-udeb (>= 1.12.1)
udeb: libpangox-1.0 0 libpango1.0-udeb (>= 1.12.1)
udeb: libpangoft2-1.0 0 libpango1.0-udeb (>= 1.12.1)
udeb: libpangoxft-1.0 0 libpango1.0-udeb (>= 1.12.1)
udeb: libpangocairo-1.0 0 libpango1.0-udeb (>= 1.12.1)

This will allow dpkg/debhelper to properly set the dependencies for udebs
that depend on libpango1.0.
Please see #345472 and #345475 for further info on this.

It would be very much appreciated if this change could be implemented
ASAP as this is the very last package to be updated before we can
integrate the graphical installer in the main d-i build system. That's
why severity is set to important.

The attached patch implements the necessary changes:
- add --add-udeb option for dh_makeshlibs which autogenerates the
udeb: lines for the shlibs file
- this requires debhelper 5.0.22
- drop the Provides: [EMAIL PROTECTED]@
- add a temporary hack in debian/rules to create a correct dependency on
  libcairo2-directfb-udeb [1]

I've not updated debian/compat to level 5 as your package has a -dbg
binary and there was a change in behavior in debhelper for those.

I have also taken the liberty of simplifying your debian/rules file a bit.
As debhelper knows how to package udebs, the separate binary-arch-udeb
target is no longer needed.

I've checked the debdiff for the debs and udeb against current versions
and there were no unexpected changes.

TIA,
Frans Pop

[1] This is needed because the current cairo package cannot be built for a
directfb frontend and therefore the udeb is build from a separate source
package. A patch for directfb support has been committed upstream and
will be included in the next upstream release. So we should be able to
drop this hack after the new cairo upstream has been packaged to produce
a udeb. Having the correct dependency (and thus the hack) is essential
for integration of the graphical installer.

Bug#365286: vtwm: please update for X11R7

2006-04-28 Thread Aaron M. Ucko
Package: vtwm
Version: 5.4.7-2.0
Severity: grave
Tags: patch
Justification: renders package unusable

As I suspect you know (even if you haven't taken an active role in the
XSF in a while), recent versions of x11-common replace /usr/X11R6/bin
with a symlink to /usr/bin and conflict with existing versions of
packages that still install into /usr/X11R6/bin; vtwm is one such.

Rebuilding with a recent version of xutils-dev should mostly take care
of this, but there are still a couple of bits of packaging that could
use an update, per the attached patch.

Could you please apply it, or authorize an NMU?

Thanks!

Thanks for your reply. Yes I eventually figured out that is
what it complained about, thanks to some feedback on dm-crypt.
I planned to try to recreate the device files for console and
null with mknod in the cryptoroot. But I haven't had time to
get back to it.

And to be honest, running encrypted partitions is so incredibly
slow that I may reformat and use luks only for /home.

Hello, Kai. I think that you have no choice :-). If I am right, two
days
will pass before the whole X.Org v7.0 enter in testing in full shape. Could
you please be so kind to try the new packages and report success?

Best regards,

Bug#365230: mcvs - FTBFS: There is no package with name "FFI"

2006-04-28 Thread Robin Verduijn
I am going to close this bug because it is already reported
(http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=230947) and not pertaining
to the mcvs package. If anything, file it against clisp if you think a
second bug for this is warranted.

Thanks,

Bug#365285: fvwm95: please update for X11R7

2006-04-28 Thread Aaron M. Ucko
Package: fvwm95
Version: 2.0.43ba-23
Severity: grave
Tags: patch
Justification: renders package unusable

Recent versions of x11-common conflict with existing versions of
fvwm95, as they still install into /usr/X11R6/bin, which x11-common
would replace with a symlink (and whose use was *already* deprecated,
but never mind that)

I've attached a patch that fixes the paths, and also allows for the
fact that x_includes comes out empty nowadays; could you please apply
it, or at least authorize an NMU?

Thanks!

Bug#365284: xclips: please update for X11R7

2006-04-28 Thread Aaron M. Ucko
Package: xclips
Version: 6.21-6
Severity: grave
Tags: patch
Justification: renders package unusable

The current transition to X11R7.0, and in particular out of /usr/X11R6,
poses two problems for (x)clips:

1) It FTBFS because it inappropriately assumes that autoconf will set
   x_libraries to a non-empty string.

2) It explicitly installs xclips into /usr/X11R6/bin. (Policy already
discouraged this practice, with a reluctant exception for packages
that use imake, and recent versions of x11-common ship /usr/X11R6/bin
as a symlink [to /usr/bin] and conflict outright with packages such
as existing versions of xclips that try to put anything there.)

The attached patch addresses both issues; could you please apply it,
or at least authorize an NMU?

Thanks!

Bug#365282: xserver-xorg 7.0.15 fails installation (pre-inst exit status 10)

2006-04-28 Thread Rodney Gordon II
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.0.14
Severity: important

xserver-xorg 7.0.15 seems to be uninstallable.

I have moved the files it gives warnings on out of the way, and it still
fails. Seems to be in the pre-inst script, which I took a peek at but
was far too complex for me to deduce exactly what is happening ;)

Thanks.

Bug#336214: gdm ignores user and system umask settings

2006-04-28 Thread Sam Morris
severity 336214 minor
thanks

I think that /etc/login.defs is only (reliably) processed by login. Most
of the options are being replaced by PAM modules, which will work for
any PAM-enabled application.

As for /etc/profile and ~/.profile, these are read by login shells, not
GDM.

You can set your umask with the following methods:

 1. system-wide: use the libpam-umask package [0]
 2. system-wide: call umask from a script in /etc/X11/Xsession.d
 3. system-wide: call umask from /etc/gdm/Xsession
 4. user-specific: call umask from ~/.gdmrc [1]

[0] currently doesn't work with GDM; see #314791 and #321620
[1] only processed if logging into GNOME,
see /etc/X11/Xsession.d/55gnome-session_gnomerc

Bug#365283: aptitude: segfaults on "c" command in CLI mode

2006-04-28 Thread Frederik Schwarzer
Package: aptitude
Version: 0.4.1-1
Severity: normal

After typing "aptitude dist-upgrade" there is the possibility to read
changelogs of the packages. There I typed in "amao" instead of "amarok"
and aptitude gave me a "segmentation fault".
I reproduced the error with any other string after "c" which is no
packagename listet above the prompt.

regards

Bug#365278: xserver-xorg: filename for backup of config file missing + suggestions

2006-04-28 Thread Frans Pop
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 7.0.15
Severity: important

During upgrade today I noticed the following:

Setting up xserver-xorg (7.0.15) ...
cat: /var/lib/x11/xorg.conf.md5sum: No such file or directory
xserver-xorg postinst warning: /etc/X11/xorg.conf has been customized,
but we need to make updates. Backing up your config to . If we screw
^
something up, restore using this file.

The filename to which the old config file is backed up is missing!

The file _is_ created though (in my case xorg.conf.20060429011120).

Also, currently the new lines are _added_ _before_ the old lines; wouldn't
it be better to either replace them, or at least add them _after_ the
current lines?

Also, I'm not sure where the ":unscaled" lines (see diff below) come from,
but should these maybe be modified as well?

Finally, the changelog does not mention changing:
Option "XkbRules" "xfree"
to:
Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
Is that possibly something to do automatically as well?

Here's the diff for my config file:

Bug#365281: ksudoku: too easy to cheat

2006-04-28 Thread Anand Kumria
Package: ksudoku
Version: 0.3-4
Severity: normal

Hi,

kusudoku will flag incorrect choices with a 'red' number.

Correct choices are 'grey'. You can 'cheat' by just trying each number
manually in each box. Only the correct choice will be grey.

Numbers should be flagged in red when there is a visible conflict
with another number already displayed. Not when it is incorrect.
