This usually happens because there's not enough video RAM available to
store the XVideo data. If increasing the amount of RAM reserved for
graphics via the VideoRam directive doesn't help, please post full X
config and log files.

Well, I'm afraid I have to reopen this bug. It turns out that it was never
really an xaw3dg bug at all: emacs21 build-depends only on xaw3dg-dev, but
expects to find X11/Xaw/Paned.h, which has never been shipped by xaw3dg-dev
but only incidentally dragged in by a (wrong) dependency on libxaw7-dev.

Perhaps xaw3dg-dev should actually be installing its own headers as
X11/Xaw/*, I don't know; but in practice this is not the interface that
Xaw3d provides, upstream or in Debian, so emacs21 needs to either include
X11/Xaw3d/* instead of X11/Xaw/, or build-depend on libxaw7-dev.

And you kicked out the powerpc maintainer despite this ? It is your

With power comes responsability, so please get this issue handled and fixed as

But my case is not exactly what is described in the errata, I'm
afraid. If ata-piix is not loaded, ide-generic nicely handles both the
hard-drive and the CD on IBM Thinkpad T43, so my system is not entirely
SATA in this sense, and inability of libata to handle ATAPI is not a
show-stopper for this system. In fact I have custom kernel running on
the system that *does not* enable ATAPI support in libata and handles
the CD by ide-generic while hard-drive is handled by ata-piix.

> and: http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/SataAtapiHowto

Yes, enabling ATAPI support in libata does allow the installer to see
the CD, but that's not the right thing to do for given hardware and
given kernel as ide-generic does support the CD nicely, and ATAPI
support in the current libata indeed has all kinds of problems.

What is the Bug# for this known issue then? I'd like to track the status.

Bug#365973: ifupdown: preinst and postinst both create interfaces if it doesn't exist

2006-05-03 Thread Peter Cordes
Package: ifupdown
Version: 0.6.7
Severity: normal

I think that only one of the preinst and postinst scripts should create
/etc/network/interfaces. Specifically, preinst should not create
it. Or if it does, move the code from the postinst to the
preinst (so the created file will have a stanza for lo).

This isn't normally a problem, because debian-installer's netcfg
writes /etc/network/interfaces itself, and FAI munges it too...

I ran into this while hacking my FAI scripts to only write
/etc/network/interfaces if it didn't exist, which is where the version
created by the pre/postinst scripts comes in. I found it
confusing, so I'm reporting a bug...

happy hacking,
Peter Cordes

Bug#365972: powerbtn.sh should include "-P" option to "shutdown"

There seems to have been a recent change to the init system. Now,
calling "shutdown" doesn't power the system down unless you include the

such that the last line reads:

/sbin/shutdown -h -P now "Power button pressed"

So your assessment is that there's no bug here? What way did you do it
first that was "wrong", btw?

> mv /etc/X11/Xsession /etc/X11/Xsession.xfree86

Right... this is a problem because plenty of users already *have* an
x11-common on their system (in unstable) that contains /etc/X11/Xsession, so
this code deletes the x11-common version of the config file for those users
-- not the xfree86-common version!

The workaround is, after upgrade, to run

  apt-get install --reinstall -o DPkg::Options::=--force-confmiss x11-common

to restore the missing /etc/X11/Xsession file.

This bug will only affect upgrades within unstable; it will not affect users
who are still running testing, so technically this is not release-critical
(it doesn't need to be fixed before xorg is updated in testing), but it's
still rather nasty...

Bug#237100: New French translation update

2006-05-03 Thread Christian Perrier
Hello,

The recent release that changed some templates did NOT include the
French translation I sent in this bug report. Even though it would
have been broken by these templates changes, it is way better to apply
pending translation updates *anyway*.

The very low bug number for this updates makes me think that debconf
translation updates like this one are more or less rotting in the
BTS. This is unfortunate for the efforts of translators.

BTW, the templates of this package are still incredibly verbose with
most of the information really pertaining to README files...

Bug#365970: libxmlsec1-openssl: is optional, but depends on libssl0.9.7 which is extra

2006-05-03 Thread Brian M. Carlson
Package: libxmlsec1-openssl
Version: 1.2.9-1
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 2.5

Policy 2.5 says:

Packages must not depend on packages with lower priority values (excluding
build-time dependencies). In order to ensure this, the priorities of one or
more packages may need to be adjusted.

libxmlsec1-openssl is optional; however, it Depends on libssl0.9.7, which is
extra. Additionally, fixing this bug would probably fix 355484, and would
reduce your dependencies on packages in section oldlibs (which are hopefully
going away *soon*).

Thank you for your consideration.

Bug#365967: x11-common: unnecessary use of pre-depends (354146)

2006-05-03 Thread Steve Langasek
Package: x11-common
Version: 1:7.0.16
Severity: important

The latest version of x11-common now pre-depends on xfree86-common,
nominally in order to fix bug #354146. The rationale given for the
pre-depends in that bug is incorrect:

Hmm, then x11-common Pre-Depends: xfree86-common to make sure that
xfree86-common.postinst is run before x11-common is configured,
shouldn't it? Or maybe remove the conffile in xfree86-common.preinst?

Please review the definitions of Depends and Pre-Depends in Policy. "A
configured before B configured" is satisfied by a simple Depends, a
Pre-Depends is only required if A must be configured before B is *unpacked*.
Constraining the unpack order of packages in this fashion, when it isn't
actually required, makes for brittle upgrades.

Pre-Depends are also not supposed to be added to packages without first
discussing them on -devel...

BTW, some other conffile that was moved from one package to another as part
of the modular switch apparently moved just fine (i.e., without conffile
prompts, whether or not it was modified) just by setting Conflicts/Replaces
against the old package. Does anyone understand why this worked in the
other case, but not in this one?

Actually, can anyone even confirm that this bug was reproducible with
x11-common 1:7.0.14/15? The bug was *filed* against version 1:7.0.0, but
the bug log only shows the output of upgrading to x11-common 6.9.0.dfsg.1-4.
Does that version predate the addition of the xfree86-common conflicts?

Bug#365964: openoffice.org-l10n-he: changes all function names to German upon installation

2006-05-03 Thread Itai Seggev
Package: openoffice.org-l10n-he
Version: 2.0.2-3
Severity: important
Tags: l10n

Upon installation of openoffice.org-l10n-he, openoffice calc converts
all function names to their German equivalents. I must therefore enter
STABW instead of STDEV and so on (existing formulae are translated to
German so they continue to work, but since I'm not fluent in German I
find it extremely difficult to enter new ones). This might be remotely
sane if I had a German locale installed, but I do not. I have en-US
and he installed.

Thanks,

No, a package cannot be configured before the packages it depends on.

Except... that ntp-server and ntp-simple have a circular dependency
relationship. This explains all the symptoms you've described, as well as
those in bug #329746.

Circular dependencies result in an undefined package configuration order,
which defeats one of the main purposes of the Depends: field. So this needs
to be fixed by breaking the loop, not by adding a Pre-Depends.

The DoS part has been fixed upstream, but the duplex breakage has not been
reproduced there yet, so we have no idea when it will be fixed.

I have seem something *somewhere* (still trying to track it down again)
about ghostscript/cups/foomatic/whatever doing dumbass things to the
PostScript duplex stuff, which might be related to the issue.

Bug#365963: new firefox has odd error when called with a url

2006-05-03 Thread Rodney Gordon II
Package: firefox
Version: 1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.3-1
Severity: important

New firefox build for 1.5.0.3, reproducably, gives an error when called
with a URL when it is already running.

$ firefox http://google.com

.. pops up a window "Firefox is already running, but is not responding.
To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process,
or restart your system."

Indeed firefox is running, but it IS responding. I have closed and
reopened firefox many times since the update, no luck.

With my current setup for FF this should open a new window with that
URL.

Thanks.

Bug#365960: firefox: Remote functionality broken in latest version

2006-05-03 Thread Stephen Smith
Package: firefox
Version: 1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.3-1
Severity: important

After upgrade to this version the remote functionality of Firefox
appears broken. To reproduce:

Start Firefox.
>From commandline invoke: firefox http://debian.org/

Expected: Firefox opens debian.org in existing session.

Actual: Error: "Firefox is already running, but is not responding..."

Additional information:
 * If I run the Debian version of Firefox, but
use the official Firefox binary to open the new session it works
   fine.
 * '--safe-mode' makes no difference.

This is the same bug a this one (http://bugs.debian.org/329746)...

The problem is that ntp-server may be configured before ntp-simple or
ntp-refclock. So the ntp user doesn't exist. ntp-server must pre-depend
of ntp-simple or ntp-refclock to be sure that the postinst script of
ntp-{simple|refclock} is run before the one of ntp-server.

Hi,

here is a patch so that w3m does not simplify the charset with
autodetect of charsets on. Another possibility is to set the option
"Automatic charset detect when loading" to OFF.

Bug#365961: python-sqlobject: egg-info support

2006-05-03 Thread Gustavo Noronha Silva
Package: python-sqlobject
Severity: wishlist

Hello,

SQLObject is one of the standalone modules which are glued into
TurboGears. TG uses a system to hold dependency, versioning and
some other kinds of information, which I'm calling 'egg-info'.

Attached is a patch that enables distribution of this information
by the python-sqlobject package, so that TurboGears and other
python-setuptools-using packages will be able to fully integrate
with it (and we will be able to package them, at last).

I had to package a newer version, though; I checked out a version
of the repository, svn exported it and docs/ and grabbed ez_setup
from the cherrypy package (the version it checked out needs a
python-setuptools newer than what is in Debian right now).

I thought I'd send the patch in a wishlist bug report anyway, so you
can take a look at it, and maybe package a snapshot to experimental,
so we can have some TG packages going into Debian in the near future.

Also, please consider joining the python-modules project in Alioth,
so we can cooperate on maintaining Python modules =).

See: http://python-modules.alioth.debian.org/

Thanks,

Could you please explain how ntp-server was configured on your system
without this dependency being satisfied first? Both ntp-refclock and
ntp-simple create the ntp system user in their postinsts in the current
unstable version.

You didn't include any information in your report about which versions of
ntp-server's dependencies are installed, so if the version number in this
dependency is wrong, I can't guess how based on the packages currently
available in the archive.

Bug#365959: O: qtorrent -- graphical BitTorrent client using Qt 3.x

2006-05-03 Thread Wesley J. Landaker
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I've orphaned the qtorrent package on behalf of myself (co-maintainer,
sponsor) and the current (inactive, non-DD) maintainer.

The program works well enough, and has no RC bugs, but has a slow and/or
dead upstream, and I believe is somewhat obsoleted by ktorrent, which
provides very similar functionality with just a few more dependencies.

This package does have a fairly good size install-based according to
popcon, so I don't recommend immediately removing it. I've fixed it up
(I think) pretty good before orphaning.

The package description is:
QTorrent is a PyQt-based client for the popular BitTorrent
software known for allowing users to distribute content without
 massive bandwidth usage.

Hello, Jean Marie. A bit later than expected, but I have already got an
useable driver for Wacom tablets. It is working for 6.9, and the switch to
7.0 should be trivial. I am upgrading my whole development environment to
latest 7.0 packages (I was still on 6.9) just now, and I hope to send you

Bug#365956: running firefox doesn't respond to requests from external apps

2006-05-03 Thread Michael Marsh
Package: firefox
Version: 1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.3-1
Severity: important

With today's update to firefox in sid, I can no longer open links in
firefox from thunderbird if firefox is already running. The dialog
that firefox pops up is, "Firefox is already running, but is not
responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing
Firefox process, or restart your system."

If no instance of firefox is currently running, thunderbird will open
one with the linked page, as normal.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Open firefox (in safe mode).
2) Open thunderbird.
3) Click on a link in thunderbird.

My installed thunderbird is 1.5.0.2-2

This also happens from the command line with both
firefox -new-tab http://www.debian.org
firefox -new-window http://www.debian.org

so the problem isn't with thunderbird.

Bug#365958: plptools: Improvements to description

2006-05-03 Thread Reuben Thomas
Package: plptools
Version: 0.12-5
Severity: minor

I suggest the following version:

---cut here---
This package lets you access EPOC devices' drives over a serial link.
You can mount them NFS-style, access them FTP-style, use a local
printer from the remote device (EPOC32 only) and perform
backup/restore.
.
Homepage: http://plptools.sourceforge.net/
---cut here---

Three sets of changes:

1. Refer to EPOC rather than Psion: should work with GeoFox, Osaris &c.
   too.

2. Correct English.

3. Don't mention p3nfs, which is no longer in Debian.

Bug#365957: python-formencode: please include egg-info support

2006-05-03 Thread Gustavo Noronha Silva
Package: python-formencode
Version: 0.4-5
Severity: normal

Hello,

FormEncode is one of the standalone modules which are glued into
TurboGears. TG uses a system to hold dependency, versioning and
some other kinds of information, which I'm calling 'egg-info'.

Attached is a patch that enables distribution of this information
by the python-formencode package, so that TurboGears and other
python-setuptools-using packages will be able to fully integrate
with it (and we will be able to package them, at last).

Also, please consider joining the python-modules project in Alioth,
so we can cooperate on maintaining Python modules =).

See: http://python-modules.alioth.debian.org/

Thanks,

Bug#219592: libnetcdf3: fortran90 interface

2006-05-03 Thread Warren Turkal
Package: libnetcdf3
Version: 3.6.0+3.6.1-beta3-0.1
Followup-For: Bug #219592

It would be nice to have the fortran90 interfaces also. It compiles just
fine as long as you have the F90 environmental var set to
"gfortran-4.1" during the compile. It might work with gfortran-4.0, but
I didn't test.

Bug#365955: tray icons for non-KDE apps detach from kicker system tray after kicker restart

2006-05-03 Thread Matt R Hall
Package: kicker
Version: 4:3.5.2-2
Severity: minor

Restarting kicker using "dcop kicker kicker restart" or other methods (KDE
crash handler) causes non-KDE tray icons used by such apps as Gaim, aMule and
Azureus to remove themselves from the tray and re-appear at the upper left of
the screen in their own seperate tiny windows with just a border and no
control buttons. These new tiny windows get newly-minted taskbar entries in
kicker.

In Gaim, Right-clicking its kicker taskbar listing and closing the
newly-windowed tray icon causes a new instance to appear on the system tray.

For aMule and Azureus, minimizing Azureus no longer results in it minimizing
to the tray like it normally will do if you have tray minimization enabled. It
just minimizes to the taskbar instead.

Not sure if this can be fixed,
Matt

Steinar, many thanks for the tip! My fstab was and is correct according
to the Debian GNU/Linux AMD64 HOW-TO:

This is my proc entry for my chroot environment:
proc/ia32/proc procdefaults0 0

I have tracked down the error to initscripts. This is
how /etc/init.d/mountall.sh parses fstab:

do_start() {
#
# Mount local file systems in /etc/fstab.
#
if [ "$VERBOSE" = no ]
then
log_action_begin_msg "Mounting local filesystems"
mount -a -t proc >/dev/null 2>&1 # Ignore error message due to
/proc already being mounted
ES_TO_REPORT=$?
mount -a -t noproc,nfs,nfs4,smbfs,cifs,ncp,ncpfs,coda,ocfs2,gfs
ES=$?
ES_TO_REPORT=$(($ES_TO_REPORT | $ES))
if [ 0 = "$ES_TO_REPORT" ]
then
log_action_end_msg 0
else
log_action_end_msg 1 "code $ES_TO_REPORT"
fi
else
log_action_msg "Will now mount local filesystems"
mount -a -t proc >/dev/null 2>&1 # Ignore error message due to
/proc already being mounted
ES=$?
[ 0 = "$ES" ] || log_failure_msg "Mounting proc filesystems
failed with error code ${ES}."
mount -a -v -t
noproc,nfs,nfs4,smbfs,cifs,ncp,ncpfs,coda,ocfs2,gfs
ES=$?
if [ 0 = "$ES" ]
then
log_success_msg "Done mounting local filesystems."
else
log_failure_msg "Mounting local filesystems failed with
error code ${ES}."
fi
fi

One can see that mountall.sh silently ignores all explicit fstab entries
to mount any proc filesystem (via the noproc directive)!

This is the most similar bug report:
"mountall.sh: additional proc mountpoints (for chroots) are not mounted"

Maybe this bug report could be merged with 359651?

Regards,
Adam

Bug#190167: [PATCH] Bug#190167: w3m: mailer configuration ignored!

package w3m

thanks

Hi,

Here is a patch which makes it possible to disable the internal mailer
completely calling the external mailer either just with the email address
(ignoring the options in the mailto: URL) or with the full mailto: URL.

Regards,

Now we can decide what to do with mailto: URLs with options
 - use internal mailer
 - ignore the options (never call internal mailer if Mailer is set)
 - call Mailer with the full mailto: URL

The piuparts log file is about 170 kilobytes, so I don't attach it,

I'd appreciate it if you could send me the log (without Cc'ing b.d.o).

Light finally dawns. It was something even more insidious. I was
suspending before I got resume working, with a ramdisk created by yaird.
Yaird doesn't properly support resume yet. When I discovered this, I
installed initramfs-tools, updated my ramdisk, and suspended. It resumed
properly on reboot. I hadn't rebooted since. So it never set
/sys/power/resume. After a reboot, /sys/power/resume says 3:2, as it
should. Thanks for your help, Michael. Hopefully, no one else follows
this odd sequence, but if they do, then this bug report should help
them.

Bug#365953: dh-make: Cosmetic fix for example changelog

2006-05-03 Thread Thijs Kinkhorst
Package: dh-make
Version: 0.40
Severity: minor
Tags: patch

Hello,

When reviewing packages on the debian-mentors list, I consistently see
them with this as their first changelog entry:

  * Initial release Closes: #12345

I think that misses some puntuation. I personally prefer the closes to
be in parentheses, but other separations could also be acceptable.

This comes from the following template:

  * Initial release Closes: # ( is the bug number of your ITP)

I've added a patch to add the parens around the closes, and to change
the parens around the comments to < and >, to be more consistent with
the other templates.

Thanks for the package by the way, I see on debian-mentors that it's
used very often and as such is very useful.

No. This seems to be the problem: For me --user=root

You can see it in my boot.log I sent you at the beginning:

Got a failure from command:
cat /usr/share/mysql/mysql_fix_privilege_tables.sql | /usr/bin/mysql
--no-defaults --force --user=root --host=localhost --database=mysql
  ^^^

I added '--verbose' to get an info, why the command failed (as suggested
by the scrip itself) - I just added it in the wrong place.

Seems you are German too (.de TLD)? So it's time to go to bed :)

The line in mysql_fix_privilege_tables is, as far as I figured out until
now: cmd="$bindir/mysql --no-defaults --force --user=$user --host=$host"
so user and password should be debian-sys-maint and the random string

Hmm. It seems, that debian-start runs mysql_upgrade with
'--defaults-file=/etc/mysql/debian.cnf' and sets 'user' automatically to
'root'. But debian.cnf is created by debconf and the user configured
there may be not 'root' (e.g. for me, the user-name is completely

Ok, so where does it come from?

* What does your /etc/mysql/debian.cnf contain?
(you can the password, of course)

* What gives
  "my_print_defaults --defaults-file=/etc/mysql/debian.cnf mysqld
mysql_upgrade"
It should give as ROOT executed:
  --host=localhost
  --user=debian-sys-maint
  --password=XXX
  --socket=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock

Argh, and I feld stupid for not finding it in any of the scripts! :)

Bug#365950: ntp-simple must be configured before ntp-server

2006-05-03 Thread Laurent Bigonville
Package: ntp-server
Severity: grave
Version: 4.2.0a+stable-8.1

Hi,

I just installed ntp-server on my debian sid, and the configuration
failed because the ntp user doesn't exist. The ntp user is created by
ntp-simple. ntp-simple must be configured before ntp-server.

 Hi Jacob,

could you please send me the output from cat /sys/power/resume?
powersaved uses this method for determining the swap partition as there
are several ways to specify the default resume partition (kernel config,
  boot pararameter, initrd parameter).
Please also send me the log file /var/log/suspend2disk.log.

I'm not a initrd expert, but a quick google search revealed [1]. Maybe
your problem is similar. Could be that one of the initrd scripts does
not set /sys/power/resume correctly. You could try to comment out
SUSPEND in /etc/mkinitramfs/conf.d/resume and update the initrd
(update-initramfs), maybe then /sys/power/resume is not modified by the
scripts in the initrd.

Cheers,
Michael

It fixes the "unknown option" issue. But using the --no-defaults option
still results in the issue I described, that every start & restart of
mysqld produces this error. Without the --no-defaults option, everything
works and I guess, the password for root is read from ~root/.my.cnf. So
can I "deactivate" the usage of the --no-defaults option? Or did I miss
something (I read /usr/share/doc/mysql-server-5.0 without getting an
answer to this question).

Bug#316337: Better workaround

2006-05-03 Thread Roan Kattouw
What I believe to be the cause of the trouble are the files in
/var/lib/apt/lists/partial/
apt-get update leaves some empty files there, and it's exactly the
package lists corresponding to those files that bzip2 chokes on. I got
into the habit of running

# rm -f /var/lib/apt/lists/partial/*
# apt-get update
but there should be a better way: apt-get update should somehow avoid
creating empty files in /var/lib/apt/lists/partial or nuke the empty
files as part of its cleanup.

Also, by some research I don't remember anymore, I think I found out the
reason for bzip2's choking: apt-get feeds it an empty file (maybe the
empty lists/partial file?). Whether this is correct I don't remember,
I'll see if I can prove it tomorrow.

I am not sure if it is the monodevelop package that needs to depend on
libmetacity0, but since I'm not particularly good at tracking down dependency
issues I figured this would be a good starting point.

This box runs testing, with monodevelop (and dependencies) pulled in from
unstable, and nothing else. However, I do have an unstable install inside
VMWare and I've verified that it happens there too, so this is not a "mixing
testing with unstable" problem.

Manually installing libmetacity0 fixed the problem in both cases.

Bug#41046: Possible fix

2006-05-03 Thread Roan Kattouw
Maybe ud should check /proc/uptime to see what the real uptime is. That
guards against ud being killed/restarted/whatever, but it has another
flaw: on 32-bit machines /proc/uptime rewinds every 49.7 days (on 2.6,
497 days on 2.4). A better scheme would be to log the /proc/uptime value
and the amount of rewinds detected to a /var/tmp file. Whenever
/proc/uptime reports a lower value than our last logged one, we've found
ourselves a rewind. A schematical overview of this process would be like
this:

1. Read /proc/uptime
2. Compare the uptime value with the previous one. If it's lower,
increase the rewind counter.

3. Overwrite the old uptime value and rewind count with the new ones
4. Calculate uptime and write it to the records
5. Sleep for some time
6. Return to 1
Uptime (in seconds) can be calculated the usual way, adding in
rewinds*49.7 days.

The only case in which this doesn't work is when ud isn't there to watch
/proc/uptime for 49.7 days straight, but most admins know better than to
leave their system in single-user mode for 50 days. Of course the
/var/tmp file should be nuked on reboot, but I believe FHS dictates that
/var/tmp be cleaned at boot time.

No, because a DVD_R is obviously not writeable.
The correct solution is to consider $ID_CDROM_MRW_W too.
(BTW, you will have to update or delete the rules file by yourself since
it has already been created.)

He is incorrect. The spec explicitly states that clear signatures are
not reversible. If some implementation makes them reversible, that's
great, but the spec says:

It is desirable to sign a textual octet stream without ASCII
armoring the stream itself, so the signed text is still readable
without special software. In order to bind a signature to such a
cleartext, this framework is used. (Note that this framework is not
intended to be reversible. RFC 3156 defines another way to sign
cleartext messages for environments that support MIME.)

So powersave *is* doing the right thing, based on the sysfs entries. So,
maybe this is a kernel bug?

Okay, I identified the bug, and a workaround.

Edit the /usr/lib/xulrunner/res/charsetalias.properties file and replace
the x-gbk=x-gbk line by x-gbk=gbk.

Please confirm that solves your problem.

It's part of the OpenPGP spec: under "Cleartext signature framework"
it says "Note that this framework is not intended to be reversible."

If you think about it, clear signatures have to modify the message to
some extent as line endings are different on different platforms.

Bug#365797: Need help with bug #365797

2006-05-03 Thread Øystein Gisnås
tag 365797 confirmed
quit

Hi,

I've learned to know that you are NM for the libnm-glib0 package. I'm NM
for evolution, and we have a problem with the new 1.6.1 release, see
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=365797

I've pretty much isolated the problem. Evolution uses NetworkManager
status to set online/offline. If dbus is not installed, though,
libnm_glib_dbus_init() in libnm-glib0 reports the error, but many times,
actually hundreds of times per second. The result is 100% CPU usage. At
first I thought the problem was in Evolution, but now I believe it's the
rescheduling of connection attempts in libnm-glib.c that causes it.

Since you might know the libnm-glib code better, can you have a look at
what might be wrong here? Shouldn't the rescheduling of connection
attempts have a timer?

I can easily reproduce this and have evo+libnm-glib with debug symbols
installed, if that can help.

RedHat also has this problem, as in
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=183870

Cheers,
Øystein Gisnås

Hello

This is quite strange, as:

 $ mysql  --no-defaults --force --user=root --host=localhost --database=mysql
Reading table information for completion of table and column names
You can turn off this feature to get a quicker startup with -A
 ...

The "--no-defaults" is a standard parameter that works for mysql since
ages...
Please check "/usr/bin/mysql --version" and "/usr/bin/mysql --help |grep
default".

Can you reproduce the problem? And if so send me
your /etc/mysql/my.cnf, /root/.my.cnf and /etc/mysql/debian-start?

Yeah, it was definitely 4.0.12, and the same error occurred on two
different machines after upgrading. I'm using 4.0.11 right now though
so that I can still get my mail. :)

Bug#346023: more information

2006-05-03 Thread C. Scott Ananian

On Wed, 3 May 2006, Bill Allombert wrote:

So I am considering following Guido advice and set the default value
to 1024M (so JPEGMEM still work but the 'nop' memory manager is almost
always used).

However I am surprised the speed differences are so large, it looks
like the ansi allocator is very slow. Would you be willing to investigate
that issue ? The log of bug #356556 include a test image.

Well, both allocators will be equivalently fast, until you run out of
available memory. Then the ansi allocator will do a much better job
swapping to disk than linux's default memory manager, which will just
thrash randomly.

On the other hand, not swapping to disk is always faster than having to
swap (undoubtedly your bug reporters have lots of main memory and so don't
otherwise have to swap).

The "best" solution is to figure out how much available memory is on the
machine and set the cut off to that. This is a hard problem: how much of
the "free" memory in the system could safely be swapped? It might be
better to set JPEGMEM by default to some fixed fraction (25%?) of the
memory in the system -- which works unless the machine is heavily loaded,
etc.

One way or another, someone is going to have to set JPEGMEM -- either
those on small memory machines or those on large. The small memory
machines get completely unresponsive if JPEGMEM is too large (because they
swap uncontrollably), while the large memory machines just do things more
slowly than they would otherwise. That was my rational for setting
JPEGMEM at a relatively modest value. I don't have any vested interest in
one particular value over another, as long as the code is compiled so that
you can set JPEGMEM if you need to. It may well make sense to gradually
increase JPEGMEM as time goes on.

Ok, but this seems like a strange and unexpected design for a signature.
There should probably be some strong warnings in the documentation. For
example, the handbook misleadingly says

The option --clearsign causes the document to be wrapped in an
ASCII-armored signature but otherwise does not modify the document.

Maybe the docs should say

Clearsigning modifies the message in minor ways that should not
affect reading. However, for this reason it should not be used on
data that must be preserved exactly.

Grandview with the /v switch

The squished display is attached.

Yes.

Manually resize = click on edge of window and drag to change its
shape.

The previous behavior was that I would be in a standard size window
(inside xdosemu) and type the name of a batch file. The batch file
executed the command "gv /v" where /v is vga mode. xdosemu appeared
to detect that program had gone into VGA mode and resized the window,
making it about twice as tall as before. I did not click the window.
In fact, I'm not even sure what resizing the window did before.

Attached, with about the best resizing I could manage.

How? Is a fix for that coming anytime soon? Or is there a
work-around?

There might be two separate issues here: the window resizing and the
font.

I will experiment with the variations and report back as time permits,
probably not before the weekend.

Thanks.
