Due to changes in Emacs 22 bicyclerepair fails to load under emacs-snapshot.
Problem is at bikeemacs.py:

(easy-menu-define
 brm-menu py-mode-map "Bicycle Repair Man"

Since Emacs 22 py-mode-map is named python-mode-map.

I second this - providing the config file never needs to be written to by slapd
when running, I'd much rather have slapd running as a user unable to modify the
config file.

xfce4-xfapplet-plugin 0.1.0-2 depending on libxfce4util4 should be in
unstable currently. Can you try to upgrade and report success or
failure ?

Bug#380588: INTL:vi

2006-07-30 Thread Clytie Siddall

Package: installation-guide
Version:
Severity: minor
Tags: l10n

Here are some possible errors (getting harder to find ;) ) I've
encountered in the original strings while reviewing my translation of
the Guide. I hope they are useful.

_
partitioning.po

1.
.po:1345
auto:   ⑤   Tag: filename
Original:   ⌘0  bin
Việt:  bin

In this table, some directory names are in tags, and some
aren't. I'm assuming they all should be, so have formatted the
translations accordingly. But for the original strings, do you want
to fix that? More than half have tags, but a few don't. It
doesn't look good.

preparing.po

- Display visibility

because the former means "display the visibility". Hyphenation allows
you to show this is a compound term: the first word is not being used
as a verb. This avoids ambiguity, which would result in the string
being translated inaccurately. I myself translated it first as
"Display the visibility".

I still wonder why I asked a binNMU.
This is why I closed the bug myself some days ago.

This is a feature. Closing the last tab doesn't close the window, but
recreates a new tab. The close button appearing is a bug, though.

There is no such ctrl+q shortcut. You can use alt-f4.

Bon Echo is the beta name. It will swith to Firefox as soon as 2.0 is
released.

This isn't surprising.

If you agree, we'll just close this bug, or retitle it for the close
button appearing thing.

Marco, I have a similar problem with Cyrillic chars. The Debian standard
build uses Xft and imlib, lite build uses X11 fonts and libxpm, see
below. The problem is reproduced easily with:

xtermset -n асдф-Fön -T асдф-Fön

There you see only junk (like not decoded multibyte) instead of
non-ascii
chars. My fc-list output looks well, I have the default set of
Windows-XP fonts

integrated "as usual", see attachement.

Choice of theme does not make any difference. Some time ago I had
success using Verdana, but this does not work anymore. I tried:

TitleFontNameXft="Verdana:size=12"

in prefoverride. The font changes, the breakage is still there.

I have tested Verdana with Cyrillic, see attached screenshot. Titlebar
is OK (font has cyrillic), the taskbar is not

(default font).

And here is the actual screenshot :)

The problem is that Joey doesn't agree with this approach because
using the version number is brittle way to this because it can fall
down in the face of backports or complicated partial upgrades.

Bug#349674: Unison and removable drives

2006-07-30 Thread Kapil Hari Paranjape
tags 349674 upstream
thanks

Hello,

As reported in Debian bug #349674 which can be seen at

http://bugs.debian.org/349674

Unison has problems when the file system is removed from under it.

For example, here is the result of my experiment.

Setup: A USB drive is mounted at /media/fakehd0
   /media/fakehd0/a and /tmp/b are directories
   that have already been synchronised by unison
   in the past.

Experiment:
   Run the command
  unison -batch -logfile /tmp/test.log /media/fakehd0/a /tmp/b
   and unplug the USB drive from the machine before the
   synchronisation can complete.

Result:
   The files on /tmp/b that were not synchronised before
   the unplugging are deleted.

   In the logfile we see that there is an I/O error
   recorded by unison before this problem occurs.

Real World Scenario:
   USB and floppy media are known to fail "mysteriously"
   while they are being used. A problem like that above
   could lead to a "backup" procedure deleting files
   instead of backing them up!

Possible solution:
   unison should abort on I/O errors.

Thanks and regards,

Kapil.

I've found a fix for this bug. It was just a very small bashism. I have
prepared and NMU and I'm going to upload it.

I'm attaching the interdiff for the NMU, as you can see it's very simple.

Since the bug report was about a FTBFS error in silky, I don't think that
any binNMU is required to fix the bug. The package also seems to have been
picked up automatically by all buildds, so this bug has rightly been closed.

I think it would be no more or less policy-compliant than what you currently
have. Short of actually changing the package to comply exactly with the
FHS, IMHO any changes here would just be busy work.

Bug#380584: pppoe-server in etch: unable to execute pppd

2006-07-30 Thread Artem Poushkin

Package: pppoe
Version: 3.8-1

It seems that pppoe-server distributed with etch has been built
with incorrect setting for PPPD_PATH in build environment.

The server would send PADT to the client immediately after PADS.
Running strace led me to this call in pppoe-server process:
execve("pppd", ["pppd", "pty", "/usr/sbin/pppoe... (irrelevant stuff)) =
-1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)

As far as I understand, execve needs the full path to the executable file,
so it cannot run pppd and the child process of pppoe-server dies, which
results in session termination.

I installed sources for pppoe package and after building it with 'go' script
everything works fine. Running strace now gives:
execve("/usr/sbin/pppd", ["pppd", "pty", "/usr/sbin/pppoe... (same
irrelevant stuff)) = 0

Respective line in the source code is (I think)
execv(PPPD_PATH, argv);
It's called from startPPPDUserMode() and startPPPDLinuxKernelMode()
so I guess it's just incorrect setting for PPPD_PATH that broke the thing.

Best regards,
Artem.

Is this because the perms on the file are 0640?

I think there had been discussion before the changes to run slapd as a
non-root user about causing the config file to be read before dropping root
privileges. I think that would be much better than a one-time override of
the admin's file permissions.

Yes, that would be a dependency then, not a conflict. The reasons for not
making this a dependency are clear.

The reasons for wishing to avoid a versioned Conflicts: are also clear to
me, being precisely those that you describe above.

So making initramfs-tools compatible with older versions of mdadm seems like
a good idea to me. Are there specific reasons why you think the proposed
solution is technically inadequate?

Thanks for the report. If you can set the VERBOSE=yes variable and
build again and report the detailed debugging output that would allow
us to know more information about this problem.

In the build directory:

  env VERBOSE=yes make -C tests/misc TESTS=pwd-long

Or whatever you need to do to get VERBOSE=yes set for the pwd-long
test. That will produce shell tracing output.

Bug#123272: crash segfaults on wrong command line input

thanks

Aurélien GÉRÔME <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes:

The documentation is clear:

  crashme.txt:45: [NSUB] The [NSUB] is optional, the number of vfork sub-
  crashme.txt:46: processes running all at once. [...]

Removing features is not the way to fix bugs.

>> * The if branch you are patching doesn't actually use nsub; only the
>>first three arguments are passed to old_main().
>
> I do not see that when I read the thing with indent as my helper.

Videlicet:

  crashme.c:392: else if ((argc == 6) && ((strlen(argv[4]) == 0) ||
  crashme.c:393:  (strcmp(argv[4],".") == 0)))
  crashme.c:394:   {verbose_level = atol(argv[5]);
  crashme.c:395:old_main(4,argv);}

The first condition on line 392 checks that there are five arguments
(plus the program name); this guarantees that argv[4] is non-null, and
the other two conditions will not produce a segfault. Line 394 stores
the fifth argument (VERBOSE) in verbose_level. Line 395 calls
old_main() with an unchanged argv[].

As you can see below, old_main() neither accesses argv[4] nor passes
argv[] to other functions:

  crashme.c:434:void old_main(argc,argv)
  crashme.c:435: int argc;
  crashme.c:436: char **argv;
  crashme.c:437:{char *ptr;
  crashme.c:438: copyright_note(3);
  crashme.c:439: nbytes = atol(argv[1]);
  crashme.c:440: if (ptr = strchr(argv[1],'.'))
  crashme.c:441:   incptr = atol(&ptr[1]);
  crashme.c:442: if (argv[1][0] == '+') malloc_flag = 1;
  crashme.c:443: nseed = atol(argv[2]);
  crashme.c:444: ntrys = atol(argv[3]);
  crashme.c:445: sprintf(notes,"crashme %s%ld.%d %ld %ld",
  crashme.c:446: (malloc_flag == 0) ? "" :
"+",nbytes,incptr,nseed,ntrys);
  crashme.c:447: note(3);
  crashme.c:448: record_note();
  crashme.c:449: if (malloc_flag == 0)
  crashme.c:450:   {the_data = bad_malloc((nbytes < 0) ? -nbytes : nbytes);
  crashme.c:451:badboy = castaway(the_data);
  crashme.c:452:sprintf(notes,"Badboy at %d. 0x%X",badboy,badboy);
  crashme.c:453:note(3);}
  crashme.c:454: srand(nseed);
  crashme.c:455:#ifdef WIN32
  crashme.c:456: SetErrorMode(SEM_FAILCRITICALERRORS |
  crashme.c:457:  SEM_NOGPFAULTERRORBOX |
  crashme.c:458:  SEM_NOOPENFILEERRORBOX);
  crashme.c:459:#endif
  crashme.c:460: badboy_loop();}

This leads me to conclude that argv[4] is not the cause of the crash.

It now issues an I:, rather than a W:, but the message doesn't reflect
reality. linear != raid0, as the message suggests. A better wording
might be "skipping non-redundant array md%d", since that covers linear,
raid0, and any hypothetical, future, non-synced array type.

Bug#380583: ITP: debcache -- python module to maintain and serve a cache of Debian packages

2006-07-30 Thread Adeodato Simó
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: "Adeodato Simó" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

* Package name: debcache
  Version : N/A
  Upstream Author : Adeodato Simó <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL (bzr branch): http://people.debian.org/~adeodato/code/debian/debcache
* License : MIT
  Programming Lang: Python
  Description : python module to maintain and serve a cache of Debian
packages

 debcache is another caching solution for Debian packages and other files found
 in Debian mirrors. It consists on a Python module with classes that implement
 the creation and maintenance of the cache in a transport-agnostic way, on top
 of which different front-ends and even user-end applications can be
implemented.

 This package includes the following front-ends:

  * a standalone proxy to serve HTTP requests (like apt-proxy) [TODO]
  * a fast mod_python handler that lets Apache serve all the static files
  * a command-line client to pre-fetch packages based on the existing ones
[TODO]

 The module also implements various cleanup mechanisms, including deletion of
 no longer referenced files, expiration based on age, and by number of versions
 (global or per distribution). [TODO]

 Other features include support for downloading Packages files via pdiff (like
 apt itself does), and denying clients access to those diffs by default.

 * * *

(The story: a year ago or so, and after repeated unhappiness with
apt-proxy and apt-cacher, I wrote my first implementation of a caching
system for Debian packages, in Ruby, which has been doing the job for
over a year, both at home and work.

Recently I became unhappy with it as well, and tried to like approx,
which was really easy even despite the lack of pdiff support (#367475),
but not so much after discovering it would delete source packages from
the cache (#374736), and really impossible after some hours of banging
my head against OCaml repeteadly trying to fix that bug myself.

Since updating my Ruby stuff to support pdiffs really made me shiver,
and since I knew of a pdiff implementation in Python by Florian Weimer,
I found myself one night putting some code together, and using it some
days after. It is still uncomplete, but as of today, SORTAWORKSFORME.)

Unless there is a menu entry I disagree with the "very easy" part. Going to

Bug#379966: Proposed New Function mr_stresc()

2006-07-30 Thread Steven M. Robbins

Quoting Andree Leidenfrost <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

Steven, Bruno,

Attached please find a patch and demo program for a new function
mr_stresc() to properly escape strings for use as arguments with (the
likes of) system() and popen().

I have thought about using functions like exec() or fork() to avoid
system() and popen(). I don't really see how the two latter would be
generally evil.

I never said system() is generally evil and I did not mean to imply
that. Both system() and exec() have their uses, but you need to know
*all* the rules in order to use them. The common pitfall when using
system() is that you need to escape the string because it will be
interpreted by the shell. Using exec() is one way to avoid that
pitfall. Doing proper escaping is another, perfectly reasonable
solution.

To the contrary, e.g. using a function that submits
things to 'sh -c' means we have a sane environment like a PATH and so
forth.

Yeah, well ... that depends on whether you can presume the user does
have a sane PATH variable. I'm inclined to believe the opposite,
actually.

I therefore suggest use of the attached function when calling system()
or popen() where required. I believe this is low-risk, low-overhead,
little work, a clean approach and can be done bit by bit.

What do you say?

Proper escaping is not impossible, but it is pretty hard due to the
arcane syntax of the shell. However, your previous message implied
that the filenames are always passed inside double quotes, and
therefore there are exactly three characters that need escaping.
Since you have a very restricted escaping problem, I agree that
escaping is a much easier solution that replacing system() by
fork()/exec().

However, your proposed mr_stresc() function has two flaws:

1. New memory is allocated each time so you run the risk of a memory
leak if the return value is not freed in the caller (and, indeed, it
is not in the mondo patch you attach).

2. Not enough memory is allocated so you're going to overrun the
buffer anytime there is a character to escape. Have a closer look at
the manpage for strspn().

Bug#380580: blender wrapper script doesn't quote arguments

2006-07-30 Thread Wesley J. Landaker
Package: blender
Version: 2.42-1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

Because the blender wrapper script doesn't quote it's arguments
properly, it's impossible to load files with spaces or other shell
metacharacters from either the command line, or through any other
program (e.g. "Open With... 'blender'" from a KDE GUI).

Fortunately, the fix is very very easy:
Replace the last line in /usr/bin/blender like this:

-blender-bin $@
+blender-bin "$@"

I just did that using an up-to-date sid amd64 chroot. The behavior is
exactly the same as before. Then I tried the same in an i386 chroot

 2.4 installation on the gateway machine (an unknown

 shorewall installed and finally the Woody 2.2 on a 486

 given to me and I obtained debian with jigdo, the total
 cost of my home network is zero!

Bug#376760: w3m vs. rxvt HOME and END keys

The terminfo's written to assume that the application sends smkx (which
puts the keypads into application mode). That's standard (sending smkx),
though some terminfo's were designed to make the bash users happy (mainly
the "linux" description). You can see the effect of changing the modes
easily in xterm using the "VT Options" menu.

I seem to recall that rxvt's terminfo is (like "linux" ;-), written for
bash-users, and assumes the terminal is started in application mode.
Checking, I see smkx differs between the two:

smkx: '\E[?1h\E=', '\E='.

xterm is on the left; you'll note that xterm uses two escape (\E) sequences
while rxvt uses one. The \E[?1h sets the cursor-keys into application
mode. I know offhand that (because of the way X defines the keycodes),
the home/end keys are classified as cursor keys - for xterm. I'm not
sure about rxvt since it bends the rules differently. Since rxvt isn't
setting that mode explicitly, and because its arrow keys are specified
in application mode, it's possible that some application reset it to
the normal mode. (That might affect the home/end keys - I'm not sure
w/o testing it).

Oddly a quick check of rxvt's rs1/rs2 strings (used in "reset") seems to
show it resetting the terminal's cursor keys into normal mode. But running
"reset" and then using cat -v still shows ^[[A (normal mode), which is
consistent. If I use TERM=xterm, then it would change to ^[OA (application
mode). But a quick check doesn't show home/end changing. It's still
^[[7~ and ^[[8~ respectively.

lynx has some hardcoded fallbacks for vt320 escape sequences that might
be catching this case. In the default keyboard configuration, xterm
sends the keys as labeled, e.g., home/end.

I don't think so either (I've done most of my testing with pc104/us).

assumed that it recognized the partition where are _vmlinuz_ and

Bug#380549: cupsys: As of 1.2.2-1 HP Deskjet stopped printing. Only test pages print.

2006-07-30 Thread Dimitris Kogias
OK, another update and possibly resolution:

My CUPS setup consists of two servers. One runs on my day-to-day
workstation (no printers directly connected) and the other runs on a
print/file/etc server, which is where the Deskjet is connected. Both
are running unstable and CUPS 1.2.2-1.

Both CUPS instances have a printer called "deskjet". The workstation's
printer's device URI is "ipp://:631/printers/deskjet" pointing
to the server's "deskjet" instance, whose device URI is of course
"parallel:/dev/lp0."

Both printers had been configured to use the CUPS HP Deskjet driver,
going back to when I was running CUPS 1.1, and printing from the
workstation, including printing of PS files, had worked without problems.

I had never tried to print directly from the print server machine, but
when I tried (with the google.ps file I attached earlier) it printed
correctly.

I just switched the workstation instance to use the "Generic postscript
color printer rev4" instead of the Deskjet driver, and I can now print
at least postscript.

It seems that with 1.2.2-1, having both printers use the CUPS Deskjet
drivers resulted in an attempt to convert from PS to HP (PCL?) "twice".
 Is auto-detection of this (which seemed to work with previous CUPS
versions) supposed to exist in 1.2.2? If not, then this isn't a bug.

Either way I have some manual reading to do to see what I have to
configure in order for other types of files to be properly handled: I
tried to print a raw text file, but that doesn't work any more (it used
to work with earlier versions).

Thanks

D.

So why does it not segfault anymore with my work?

While you seem perfectly fine saying what I did is stupid, I would
be rather interested that you propose a better solution for a bug
opened more than 4 years ago and which nobody cared to fix.

Bug#123272: crash segfaults on wrong command line input

tags 123272 - patch
thanks

Aurélien GÉRÔME <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes:

> I did a patch for this crappy (non-)indented C source code.

The patch is problematic in several ways:

 * nsub is an optional argument; its absence is not an error.
 * The if branch you are patching doesn't actually use nsub; only the
   first three arguments are passed to old_main().
 * From a cursory gdb session, the reason crashme segfaults is that it
   executes illegal instructions, not in the options parsing.

Thanks,

Bug#287415: mdadm: degraded md devices not assembled on boot

2006-07-30 Thread Kevin Brown

The manpage for mdadm states for the --run option:

   -R, --run
  Insist that mdadm run the array, even if some of the components
  appear to be active in another array or filesystem. Normally
  mdadm will ask for confirmation before including such components
  in an array. This option causes that question to be suppressed.

So: either the manpage lies about the circumstances under which the
--run option is applicable, or mdadm for some reason thinks that a
device that doesn't exist is equivalent to a device that is in use
somewhere else. I suspect the latter.

Either way, it looks like a bug in mdadm.

All this may be redundant, of course, but I just wanted to state all
this here to make it crystal clear what the issue really is (or at
least appears to be). One otherwise has to scan the bug conversation
to see this.

OK... meanwhile, having the logs rotated twice as fast is inelegant but
not too serious.

The post-upgrade state is exactly that - two init scripts for the same
program, both active. Even if there are interlocks, it is still messy.

What then, _is_ the proper way to purge packages? I haven't found any
way to preview the results of a purge without peeking inside
/var/lib/dpkg/info/ .

No, not at all. As I said, the ntp-simple postinst deletes the 'ntp'
user account during purge, which the new ntp packages still use.

Heya,

Discussion in IRC showed that doko suspects libgcc2 deps in one of the

still does that, so I requested a bin-NMU. Hopefully, after that was
done, a reschedule will work out.

Bug#379452: sgt-puzzles: please remember window size across type changes

Ben Hutchings writes:

I don't think that's quite right; if a puzzle is (say) 3x3, but the user
then changes to 2x2, this would expand the 2x2 puzzle to fill the space
used by the 3x3 one.

I think a better approach would be for the internal 'tilesize' parameter
to be remembered across game grid size changes, so that the individual
game features stay at the user's requested size.

The attached patch against the upstream version illustrates this, but it
needs some work; as it stands, if the tile size is enlarged and then a
new game grid size is selected, the tile size cannot be reduced again.

(This no-shrinking policy applies to the unpatched upstream version too;
perhaps it shouldn't?)

No data makes it to the printer driver, either. I would suspect
gs-esp is the culprit, but I didn't see gs-esp getting run in your

Could you provide the file you were printing? What format was it?

This goes on ALL DAY and NIGHT.
BTW, there are no ISA slots on the motherboard.
There is a SATA drive installed, that seems to strongly coincide with this
problem.

it's filling up the syslog and hence partitions.

Bug#380020: ipcCreate: /usr/lib/squid/diskd_daemon: (2) No such file or directory

2006-07-30 Thread Henrik Nordstrom
The ipcCreate: /usr/lib/squid/diskd_daemon: (2) No such file or
directory error message seen in your logs is a bug where the default for
diskd_program doesn't match where the daemon is installed (installed as
diskd-daemon).

Fixed by
http://www.squid-cache.org/Versions/v2/2.6/changesets/10880.patch

Workaround
set diskd_program to the correct path.

I think we should remove psys.

  * Orphaned for 5 months.
  * Its only reverse dependency, chipmunk-log, was removed in September 2005.
  * Last upstream release a year ago:

I've checked to patch and applied it to the svn version of the
package (and I've forwarded it to CPAN's RT:

Could some DD from the Debian Perl Group please review my changes to
the package and if appropriate upload the new revision?

Yes, I did experiment with this and it didn't seem quite right. However
I thought I'd wait a bit more before updating the bug.

I also considered this, but it has the drawback that the window can then
unnecessarily become larger than the screen.

Right now I can't understand what this is doing; I'll try to find time
for it later.

Not sure what you mean by this?

It seems to me that the submitter of #330301 is MIA:

#330301 is nine months old.

The submitter of #330301 didn't reply during the last three months
(or so) to a question about the status of the ITP of php-phpunit2.

So, I have uploaded Bart's package, wich closes both #330301 and

(FWIW, I'm the most recent uploader of the package, even though I don't
maintain it any longer.)

Please do request it's removal. I meant to get around to that earlier,
but I didn't get a chance. The package has no dependencies or build
dependencies, and there are better replacements, so I think it's a good
idea to remove it.

Bug#380233: [pkg-ntp-maintainers] Bug#380233: package transition leaves a mess of old ntp-server and ntp-simple stuff, including dangerous purge possibilities

My thought on the cron jobs is that we're going to remove them in the
new package, because logging goes to syslog by default, and there
doesn't seem to be a good reason not to use that anyway, plus we have
requests to use logrotate, which would be a better alternative if we
needed it, which we don't.

The init script might be a bit of an issue because you might have two
init scripts trying to start the same program, but there are interlocks
that should prevent that.

Other than that, I don't see a problem with leaving the configuration
files lying around.

My answer to that is that you shouldn't randomly purge packages at
random times. We could, however, try to document a sequence of steps
to clean up your system after an upgrade. Basically, if you restart
ntp after you purge ntp-server, you should be fine.

The ntp-simple and ntp-refclock packages can be safely removed at any
time I believe.

By the way, even in a utf-8 locale, one can't see most of the stuff

To bad it won't show me valid choices.
OK, it needs to go online first. Well if it could only get past this

Bug#377447: appletouch trackpad is ignored (internal USB, 5 mo 14" iBook)

2006-07-30 Thread Matthias Grimm

Hi Brendon,

You filed a bug report to debian and I would like to ask you some
further questions.

Do you use the XOrg with the synaptics trackpad driver?

This driver has a known problem. It opens the event device for the
trackpad exclusively and block it for any other application. In this
case pbbuttonsd can't open the event device for the trackpad and
therefore won't get events from it.

There is a patch for the synaptics driver out to solve this, but I
don't have it at hand. Please file a bugreport to Xorg and the package
xserver-xorg-input-synaptics too. Maybe they will fix the problem one
day and use a cooperative way to read trackpad events.

 Best Regards
   Matthias

The Debian diff includes a scanner.c generated by a non-buggy version
of flex, but sometimes it is regenerated due to timestamp skew.

This is a recurrence of #359127: "flex: comparison between signed and
unsigned in generated scanner". flex.skl contains the fix, but skel.c
needs to be rebuilt.

I can't reproduce either, and it has been reported that 0.2.6 (on debian
unstable) worked on amd64. I don't know if it's a problem with mousepad
0.2.4 on amd64, as I couldn't find somebody on etch/amd64.

0.2.6 in unstable need Xfce 4.4Beta2 so I guess you'll have to wait for
the transition to propagate to Etch.

Before an upload into Debian proper, I'd suggest changing the package name to warzone2100{,-data} and possibly weakening the -data package dependency to simply $source:Upstream-Version, so we don't have to release a new (large) -data package for a simple binary recompile.
