Bug#405160: tasksel: laptop task installs bare X.Org

2006-12-31 Thread Frans Pop
Package: tasksel
Version: 2.59
Severity: minor

When you select the laptop task by itself, it also installs most of X.Org
due to dependencies, but not enough to result in any kind of working X
environment.
This also makes the download and installed size a lot larger than strictly
required.

Installed/Download  Comments
49.3  16.9  Current laptop task
26.3   9.5  Without xserver-xorx-input-synaptics, which gets rid
of most of all X.Org packages
10.1 3.1 Without acpi-support, which gets rid of dbus and thus
xbase-clients
 4.1 1.5 Without bluetooth, which gets rid of x11-common

The last set I would qualify as the pure laptop utilities.

It would be great if the laptop task could be split into a basic laptop
task and a "laptop-desktop" task that "enhances" both desktop and laptop,
but I'm not sure if tasksel supports a double "enhances" currently.

Cheers,
FJP

I've checked, and 0.13-0.1 appears to resolve the problem. [I
replicated it with 0.11-something, and couldn't with 0.13-0.1.]

Thanks Wouter!

In general this is a known issue. Required disk space for the different
tasks are documented in the manual, but is not checked during the
installation as technically this is not that easy to implement.
It is also not that easy (if possible at all) to detect out of disk as the
reason for failures. The installer will respond much like a normal
system: with a bunch of errors that can be checked in the logs.

How exactly did you partition your disk?
What tasks did you select?
On which file system did you run out of space?

The Desktop task should only be shown as installable if there is
sufficient free disk space, though the check is probably too tight at the
moment.

Joey:
I've just checked the required disk space for tasks, and 2GB is probably
too low for Desktop. IMO you have to consider that Standard + Desktop +
Laptop should be installable together.

That means (installed + download):
Standard: 197 + 60
Desktop + Laptop: 1272 + 421 (Laptop adds only about 6 MB)

Grand total: 1950MB

Yup, it's a silly bug in the scripts. Already fixed in svn, the new
images (today) should be fixed by the new weekly build.

Bug#401726: xterm: color change on redraw

So, does this mean that it's a bug in xterm, or a but in mutt, or what? I
know it's mutt that *triggers* it... when mutt launched vim in its window
to compose this message, the window flashed cyan, and I've got this cyan

It didn't do that before.

Bug#268713: update-rc.d: Unhelpful -h text remains

2006-12-31 Thread Paul TBBle Hampson
reopen 268713 !
Thankyou Mr Bug Control Robot

The "sNN kNN" syntax still appears in the -h output of update-rc.d,
even though the manpage was updated as per the diff posted to this
bug.

I've just come across a wiki entry that had "s99 k04" in the
update-rc.d invocation instructions, and when that failed I
stared at the -h output for a fair few minutes before trying it
without the s and k.

So I feel it is still misleading.

Maybe rather than changing the -h output, make the code accept the s and
k? This could be as simple as adding the following two lines at line 155
of update-rc.d:

$start =~ s/^s//;
$stop =~ s/^[sk]//;

(Not tested, mind you. But it looks right to me.)

Well, it is a special case, I agree. But since you already plugged it in once,
you can already know the address (ls /var/lib/bluetooth).

Pythong is priority standard. Ok not essential but looking at what already
depends on python, it is most likely already installed.
I wouldn't mind it but I am not the bluez-utils maintainer ;)

Bug#405153: amarok: Amarok orphaning mp3s; likely libgpod incompatibility

Package: amarok
Version: 1.4.4-2
Severity: important

I am experiencing the problem reported here
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=138733

I haven't yet tried building with the exact version of libgpod0 on my
system to see if that fixes it; the kde build dependencies are large.

If the solution for this bug is what Martin Aumueller recommends, then
I suppose the fix could be to require the exact version of libgpod0
that amarok was built with or perhaps link to it statically.

Bug#405154: libsdl-gfx1.2-4: unchecked surface allocation results in segfault

2006-12-31 Thread Kevin Locke
Package: libsdl-gfx1.2-4
Version: 2.0.13-2+b1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

In SDL_rotozoom.c there are several calls to SDL_CreateRGBSurface()
where the return value is passed unchecked to subsequent functions
where it is dereferenced (such as zoomSurfaceRGBA()) which results in
segfaults. The attached patch bails out and returns NULL if
allocation fails (since SDL_Error is already set by CreateSurface()
upon failure).

There may be more elegant ways to handle this (is there a way to
recover from failed allocations?) but at least this will allow the
user to call SDL_GetError() on failure.

Hope you find it useful,
Kevin

Bug#364167: missing sound drivers (were in 2.6.8 but gone in 2.6.17 and above)

2006-12-31 Thread Brian White

this is an obsolote sound module and oss is superseded by alsa.
there is an equivalent sound driver for your sound card available.
make sure you have the alsa userland installed aka alsa-utils
and run alsaconf it will load the apprioriate sound driver.

Okay, I got it. It was found and loaded by "discover" but there was a
USB webcam that somehow took first position so everything tried to play
through that.

Bug#405152: myspell-lv: patch to generate aspell-lv

2006-12-31 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Package: myspell-lv
Version: 0.6.5.1-1
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Sveiki!

I made a preliminary patch to generate the Aspell wordlist from the MySpell one:

dget http://q-funk.iki.fi/debian/pool/m/myspell-lv/myspell-lv_0.6.5.1-1.1.dsc

There is one error (similar in nature to the one that previously plagued the
Russian wordlists that I maintain) that appears at installation time. However,
because I'm not (yet) too familiar with Latvian, I'm not sure how to fix the
word that triggers the bug.

Anyhow, if the above looks like something that you would consider a good
starting
point to generate proper Aspell wordlists for Latvian, feel free to use it.

  Description : A client for the ClamAV virus scanner daemon

 This package supplies ClamAV::Client, a Perl interface to
 the ClamAV virus scanner via the clamd daemon. It allows
 connection either over a UNIX domain socket to a local
 clamd, via TCP to a remote one.

 The client package fully implements the clamd socket protocol,
 with both scanning and daemon management calls provided.

Bug#405149: hylafax-server: faxinfo and other utils always exit(0), even on erros

2006-12-31 Thread Paolo
Package: hylafax-server
Version: 2:4.3.1~rc3-1
Severity: normal

hi,

this was mentioned 'en passant' in #370420: faxinfo as well as other utils,
should exit with non-0 status, so that scripts can implement case path
according to return code as usual.
Se also proposed patch in #370420 (faxinfo only).

I feel bug is 'normal' instead of just 'wishlist', as eg 'success' (rc=0)
isn't expected in current practice for eg 'either not TIFF or corrupted'.

thanks

Bug#304159: Debian package for gnudatalanguage now available

2006-12-31 Thread Sergio Gelato
Since after all these years I still can't find a gnudatalanguage package
in the Debian archives, I decided to roll my own. I'm not a Debian developer
so I won't be uploading it to the Debian archives, but any interested
parties are welcome to download my work from

http://www.astro.su.se/~gelato/Modified_Debian_packages.html#gnudatalanguage

The packaging, like gnudatalanguage itself, is under the GPL (v2 or later).

My policy, as explained on that page, is to distribute my packages in
source form only; if you want binaries, compile them yourself (I use
pbuilder for that purpose).

Happy 2007.

 I've proposed using the patch to revert to the previous level of

 (to effectively postpone and warn of the change until the next major
 glib release).

I don't have a "throwaway" system with the right hardware on which I
can test random kernels to debug this, unfortunately. So it'll have
to wait until 2.6.20 hits -testing.

okay... when we do get around to including the patch i'll come find you
and get you to help test it on your production systems for us :)

yeah... there's no reason to patch both configure and configure.in,
that's kinda silly really. i think as it is we're already regenerating
the configure script as part of the build process, so nothing to lose
putting an additional change in configure.in from what i can tell.

anyway i'm on vacation right now and am doing mostly stuff limited to
email exchanges, but depending on when etch gets released i could see
this showing up in either experimental or unstable sometime in late
january.

Bug#400560: aptitude: #400560 shows up after failure to obtain Packages files

2006-12-31 Thread Rodrigo Gallardo
Package: aptitude
Version: 0.4.4-1
Followup-For: Bug #400560

I got the same failure when trying a dist-upgrade after a failed update.
In my case, the update failed because a machine in my sources.list was
not available in the network I updated from.

Retrying the update did no good. Removing the deb and deb-src entries
from sources.list and retrying the updated fixed the problem.

Hi; we may have a temporary fix in place.

Can you please install glib version 2.12.6-2 (it was only just uploaded,
so it may take a day or so to get to the mirror) and check whether it
seems to have solved the bug?

Ok I generated alternatives; the packages for sponsoring are at

Also attached to this mail is the final script used to generate the

If such a patch is in, and can be verified to work by the people who
reported the bug against gnucash, then I have no objections (on this
score) to the migration of glib into testing. Can you let me know when
an upload is made so that it can be conveniently tested?

The upstream bug in bugzilla is looking like upstream is not going to
allow spaces in keynames, though this may change. I understand that
gnucash upstream plans to talk directly to them.

> It would be best if Gnucash switched as soon as possible to stricter
>  key names.

gnucash upstream is working on the problem. However, a serious
deficiency with this particular change was that it did not make any
sensible *conversion* possible. When new strictness rules are created
out of whole cloth, it is crucial to provide for transition, and not
just decree a new rule. It appears that glib is very unlikely to do
anything to help with the transition, which creates major extra work.
If you could impress this upon the upstream maintainers, it would be
great.
>
> The first patch will probably be reverted in the lenny cycle, and the

If the patch to support spaces gets reverted, can we please at least
coordinate that with gnucash? (That is, please don't just revert it
when the mood strikes; check and see whether the upstream gnucash fix is
in place in Debian unstable first.)

please read in the developer reference on how to ask for a sponsor
properly. on -wnpp, nearly nobody reads this.

nevertheless, i had a look at your package:

  * tipp: debhelper (>> 4.0.0) is over-precise,
debhelper (>= 4) is just enough.

  * should: since you wrote ocamlwc.1 yourself,
you should structure it like the more common
examples, incl. adding a AUTHOR section.
look at gproftpd for a sane example.

  * must: instead of patch, you should use patch-stamp in rules.

  * should: remove the

line from the dpatch header.

  * should: you do not ship a shared library, hence remove the
useless dh_makeshlibs from your rules.

  * should: you do not have a shlibs:Depends in control,
hence remove the useless dh_shlibdeps from your rules.

if you fix above things, i'll sponsor this package.

this is an obsolote sound module and oss is superseded by alsa.
there is an equivalent sound driver for your sound card available.
make sure you have the alsa userland installed aka alsa-utils

such questions are better directed to the debian-user mailinglist
than filing bug reports.

anyway unless your hardware is _really_ not supported,
you need to provide some info aka lspci -vv, dmesg and so on

Bug#404888: Status of KeyFile regressions in glib2.0

2006-12-31 Thread Loïc Minier
Hi,

 First, I'm the one who uploaded the new upstream release of glib2.0
 with the regressions you noticed in Gnucash. I apologize for not
 testing this new release for a longer time: it only spent a single day
 in experimental and on my system; Sébastien Bacher suggested that I
 should test core libs such as glib2.0 for a longer time before upload.

 (Please note that the new upstream release did not bump shlibs, so I
 didn't expect it to hijack the etch release cycle; it still caused an
 inconvenient situation obviously.)

 Given that the problem not only hit gnome-vfs2 but also Gnucash, I can
 only agree that the strictness in KeyFile checks is too intrusive;
 hence I've added a patch reverting to the older checks but also
 outputting warnings when the new checks fail. (Attached.)

 Finally, since glib's upstream added support for key names with MIME
 types chars such as "/" and "+" for gnome-vfs2, I also added a patch to
 silently support key names with spaces in the middle of the name (not
 at the beginning or at the end) as I think this might be relatively
 common.  (Attached as well.)

 Please let me know if the patches still cause regressions or introduce
 new regressions via bug reports against glib2.0.

 It would be best if Gnucash switched as soon as possible to stricter
 key names.

 The first patch will probably be reverted in the lenny cycle, and the
 second patch might be kept if upstream merges it.

 Happy new year!

   Bye,

I, too, have noticed that since 2.6.8, some OSS drivers are missing.
For me specifically, "osssolo1.ko" is missing and my IBM ThinkPad needs it.

This module is present in 2.6.8 but that version is too old to support
udev and some other things.

Please include these modules if possible. Thanks!

Bug#405145: hylafax-server: redundant/misplaced stop/start lines in .postinst

2006-12-31 Thread Paolo
Package: hylafax-server
Version: 2:4.3.1~rc3-1
Severity: normal

hi,

perhaps I'm mis-reading the script, but seems to me that lines 219..221

$  invoke-rc.d hylafax stop
$ (echo; echo no; echo no) | /usr/sbin/faxsetup -server
$  invoke-rc.d hylafax start

should be removed, at least the 'start' one, as next step @239 - ask the
user if server should be (re)started - would be meaningless if
RUN_HYLAFAX=1 already.

I think both stop/start lines (219,221) should be removed; server should be
(re)configured anyway, then ask user whether to actually (re)start it.

Hi!

The brasero package should suggests gnome-icon-theme, so users that
don't use Gnome and don't have gnome-icon-theme installed can see that
installing it they will get some icons when using brasero.

Thank you!

 Could you compare the config.* files from a configure run on your
 powerpc in gstreamer0.10 with the files from the G3 run in #404876?

 I hope this could help pin-point the relevant test that we need to
 force to the G3 value on the buildds; perhaps it can even be moved to
 runtime.

   Thanks,

Bug#405141: python-twisted: Doesn't load from an SVN working dir

2006-12-31 Thread Anders Kaseorg
Package: python-twisted
Version: 2.4.0-2
Severity: important
Tags: patch

twisted apps managed in subversion 1.4 directories fail to load with a
nasty expat error, because twisted.python.versions incorrectly uses an
implementation detail in .svn to find the app's subversion revision
number. (I ran into this problem trying to install the SVN version of
Nevow.)  The upstream bug report
 has a patch ("PATCH") that
they applied; it would be good to get this into the package.

I'm running Ubuntu feisty i386 but the package appears to be the same as
the one in etch and sid.

Thanks for checking. I now believe the problem was due to missing
"height" and "width" attributes on images in the page that was badly
displayed. Apparently the browser first attempted to display the page
without allowing for the space actually occupied by the images, so it
mis-judged where to go to reach the #fragment. After the page had loaded
fully, the browser *did* know how much space to allow of the images,
and went to the correct place.

I'm now more careful to make sure all images have "height" and "width"
attribute tags.

This is not the same problem. I am affriad that not being able to load
processor module could be much more serious for your pc health than just not
being able to change frequency.

Maybe this small patch could help (unless pm_idle is not exported
intentionally for reasons I am missing):

Hi,

this bug was introduced in 1.9.18-3.

I've attached a patch that reverts the changes that caused this bug,
this patch is quite small, only two lines had to be changed.

I'm not sure whether this patch has any negative side-effects, but at
least on i386 it apparently does not break something.

Sorry, forgot to attach both scripts for public review.

They live in /etc/cron.monthly/acct after installation
(if that wasn't obvious).

Bug#404222: yet another update to twiki debian package

Well, I'd change the error message to contain information about
the reason for the denial of the request:

  Sven's version:
params => [ 'redirect', 'unsafe redirect to '.$url ]);

  A suggestion:
params => [ 'redirect', 'unsafe redirect to '.$url.': '.$host.' does not
match DefaultUrlHost' ]);

I would hope that any TWiki admin would be able to find
DefaultUrlHost in /etc/twiki and note the difference.

Since I don't fully understand the intentions behind the regular
expression matching on the redirection target and don't know the
code creating and handling this piece of information, I can't
suggest a good replacement. What happens if the (malicious)
redirect points to a target such as "bad.server" instead of
"http://bad.server"; (if this is possible at all) -- which
wouldn't match the expression anyway but might be supported by a
lot of browsers and thus be successful?

Cheers, Marcus

This is a bogus description of lib *on systems where libexec is not used*.

Well, we could just add libexec and move a ton of crap from lib to libexec.

I also dislike .files ANYWHERE outside of user dirs, but lots of other stuff
uses them too as it was pointed out to me sometime ago in -devel.

We can include debian-release again one the issues are fixed and the
package is considered fit for release. :)

Bug#405134: acct: cron.monthly broken

2006-12-31 Thread Fabian Pietsch
Package: acct
Version: 6.4~pre1-3

Hi,

acct's cron.monthly script seems to be severely broken since -3.

What seems to be a good-faith attempt to handle switching between
compressed and uncompressed rotated logfiles gracefully, turns out to be
affected by the following defects:

 - Compressed rotated logfile is no longer uncompressed for processing.
   Instead, a fresh, empty temporary file will be used.

 - The case of having no uncompressed but a compressed logfile isn't
   handled anymore.

 - If no compressed logfile exists, an unconditional 'rm -f ""' will be
   executed, without output redirection(, but simply wrong).

 - Even in the case of having two rotated logfiles, one compressed and
   one uncompressed, for what the change seems to have been meant:
   `ac' is run on both files, but `last' only on the compressed one
   (if it would have been decompressed into the temporary file).

The previous (-1) version's only defect, on the other hand, seems to be
that it unconditionally uses a possibly-existing uncompressed rotated
logfile in addition to the previously detected existing
uncompressed-or-compressed one, and there, too, only for `ac', not for
`last'. It could have been fixed simply be dropping the superflous
'-f /var/log/wtmp.1'.

Apart from the technical details, there seems to be little point in
trying to support using two rotated logfiles at the same time, as they
are assumed to be rotated monthly / contain records for the previous month,
and if really a wtmp.1 and a wtmp.1.gz exist at the same time, one will
almost certainly be out-of-date and be stuck there from a configuration
change whether to compress rotated wtmp files.

Hope this helps in any way and is not (perceived as?) only flames...

Regards, Fabian

The file was generated by a reply by mail (the HTML code was included
in my reply). So I didn't write it and couldn't (and wouldn't want to)
change it.

It probably is in HTML mode, but not in other modes. Or Emacs should
look at the other parts of the file.

Bug#405133: messes up the display resolution (i.e. the dpi setting)

2006-12-31 Thread Rogier
Package: kde-guidance
Version: 0.7.0-1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

After installation of kde-guidance, and restart of X, all fonts were displayed
*much* larger than before. Changing the X-server resolution did not have any
effect.
It appeared that using the default installation settings, guidance insists on
rounding the resolution to 96 or 120 dpi. In my case this means a 28% (!)
increase
in font size (from 75dpi to 96dpi).

I have tried finding a way to change this behavior, but displayconfig does not
have
an option to configure this. After reading the source, I manually created a file
/etc/kde3/displayconfigrc containing the text 'dpi=xserver'.
(For the benefit of other people reading this report: this file can be created
in
any of the paths returned by 'kde-config --path config')

IMHO, kde-guidance's default policy should be to modify nothing, and use the X
server's setting. This also gives best results if the user may start X sessions
on different X servers (with different resolutions...). Consistency is also
improved across applications when some do, and others don't use xrdb's value.

Another reason is that users may install kde-guidance along with a large batch
of other software, or upgrades, and be puzzled as to why their fonts seem to
have changed. Few may discover kde-guidance causes this, and even less will
discover how to change this, except by removing kde-guidance again...

I propose to change FixXorgDPI in

 There's already something, which is the IF_VLAN_RAW_DEVICE
 (vlan_raw_device in /e/n/interfaces) setting. I intend to promote this
 better after etch, perhaps warning people relying only on the old vlan*
 naming scheme that they should add such a definition.

Bug#405132: cdimage.debian.org: etch multi-arch netinst CD fails integrity check

2006-12-31 Thread Francesco Poli
Package: cdimage.debian.org
Severity: normal

Hi!

I downloaded a recent snapshot of the new multi-arch netinst CD ISO image.
I checked the image MD5 checksum and it is OK.
I burned the CD and then tried to check the integrity of its content:

  $ mount /cdrom/
  $ cd /cdrom/
  $ grep -A 4 labeled README.txt
 This CD-ROM is labeled

   Debian GNU/Linux testing "Etch" - Official Snapshot
 Multi-architecture i386/amd64/powerpc NETINST #1 20061228-09:45

  $ md5sum -c md5sum.txt
  md5sum: MD5 check failed for './md5sum.txt'
  $ grep 'md5sum\.txt' md5sum.txt
  f9e0046389c212f1efa8b26469f844e9  ./md5sum.txt
  $ md5sum ./md5sum.txt
  c25ce4f626d23a50f57c83ad214c357b  ./md5sum.txt
  $ cd
  $ eject /cdrom/

It seems that the `md5sum.txt' file includes a line which claims
to report the MD5 checksum of the file itself.
The checksum is obviously incorrect (AFAICT, it could only be correct
if one managed to converge an appropriate iterative procedure...).

I think that `md5sum.txt' MD5 checksum should not be included in
`md5sum.txt' itself...

Actually it seems that it used to be excluded in sarge CDs:

  $ mount /cdrom/
  $ cd /cdrom/
  $ grep -A 3 labeled README.txt
 This CD-ROM is labeled

   Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 r0a "Sarge" - Official i386 Binary-1

  $ md5sum -c md5sum.txt
  $ grep 'md5sum\.txt' md5sum.txt
  $ cd
  $ eject /cdrom/

Bug#383260: dfsbuild: Custom script OR mount --bind /proc

2006-12-31 Thread Lars Kruse
Package: dfsbuild
Version: 0.99.2
Followup-For: Bug #383260

Hi,
I have the same problem as described above: I cannot install samba via
dfsbuild.

If install scripts of packages (like samba) may not depend on /proc (according
to the debian package policy), then a bug report should be filed against samba.
But if this is allowed, then dfsbuild should provide /proc (and maybe /sys)
within the chroot environment.

Otherwise a hook for pre- and post-installation would be nice to solve
this (very annoying) problem.

thanks and regards,
Lars

observed, that choosing the "CDX - ChemDraw Binary Format (*)" output

Bug#405129: installation-reports: No message displayed if there is not enough space for the installation.

2006-12-31 Thread alex
Package: installation-reports
Severity: important

I tried to install Etch using the RC1 installer (expertgui way).
I didnt allocate enough space for the installation. Obviously, it
couldnt finish the installation, and I was getting generic "I cant
install" messages, giving me the option to try again, but I wasnt told
that there just wasnt enough space. I had to get out of the installation
and check for myself what was wrong.

I think the gui should tell me that I was out of free space, instead of
just failing and even telling me try to select the option again in the
menu.

PS: The System Info below is about my current working system, not
the installer Im talking about. Not removing it because i dont know if
reportbug will cry if I delete it.

Bug#404482: Patch to fix the "I" cursor issue

2006-12-31 Thread Attilio Fiandrotti

Frans Pop wrote:

Hi Attilio,

On Monday 25 December 2006 15:45, Attilio Fiandrotti wrote:

As a workaround, the attached patch resets the cursor to its original
arrow shape when it moves into the main gdkwindow.

I've tested this in vmware and it does make the cursor switch back
sometimes, but very unreliably. Most of the time I still have an "I"
where you'd want an arrow.

It's also extremely unpredictable: sometimes when you move from one area
to another the cursor changes back, on other occasions it does not.
During localechooser I could hardly get the cursor correct at all, later
it was a bit better.
It also seems to change late sometimes ("long" after you've already
crossed over to another area). The overall effect is very erratic.
Also, if you go from description _around_ e.g. a text input box, the
cursor will not change.

Personally I'd prefer to keep the current behavior over a hack that only
half works. If you can improve the patch, that'd be different of course.

Yesterday i replied to this bug, but my reply never hit d-boot tough it
was recorded in the bts, maybe because of attached jpg size: it still
can be found in #404482 debian's bts page.

I don't see why it would depend upon GDM, though, since Ubuntu (which is
where the package originates from) also supports KDE and XFCE.

Sadly, I'm starting to agree. :(

However, this also means that users will need to manually upgrade their
system, which his far from ideal.

If anyone would care to contribute code towards fixing the above, it
would still be highly relevant for Etch. At any rate, this software's
usefulness post-Etch would essentially be zero, so it's pretty much a
now-or-never case.

They don't, yet, users possibly have to wait for KDE4.
What is the solution for command line users? Or do you mean dbus-send?

Sorry but that is not sufficient. I tested this (X with konsole) and nothing
happened. Running the same command with su worked.

* your last mode was "discoverable"

* plugging the dongle in and then chaning to "connectable" may be too late
Practically the same thing as the default from above.

Does that mean that there is such a tool?

Or even better: write a libbluezconf with a shell frontend, so that other
programs can easily change bluetooth settings.
Wouldn't a simply shell script suffice in the mean time?

Works fine here, so no comment.

It does. Here, it says that the locale is already migrated. It also says
that it cannot find any files utilizing a legacy encoding.

Russian is a messy case. Too many encodings, more than half of which are
OS-specific or otherwise standards that never gained momentum. This is
further complicated by usage cases: while Unices tend to go for KOI8-R,
users that need to interact with Windows use CP1251 instead. Still, it's

Remaining UCS issues really belong in Etch's release notes, since it is
Debian's first release claiming UTF-8 support.

I'd still go for it. Applications for which upstream cannot be bothered
with supporting UCS or locales that create exception cases are not an
excuse to deprive users of this tool.

Xfe is a fine file manager. It is, however, lacking one feature that would
make it an excellent file manager: the ability to eject media (cd, dvd,

to eject media as well.

Bug#405128: Segfault in IMAP code

Package: sylpheed-claws-gtk2

Hello

Since yesterday sylpheed-claws-gtk2 segfaults when starting.
sylpheed-claws (gtk1) still works. As I changed some IMAP settings,
IIRC "STARTTLS" to "normal SSL", it could be that.

Using GDB I get the following stack trace:

Not yet tested the patch, but the idea looks nice.

This should be '$lspci', right?

Some minor comments:
- please always use tab indentation in d-i (saves memory)
- we slightly prefer '$(...)' over '`...`'.

Cheers,
FJP

Note to self and joeyh;
Is the check for /target//usr/bin/lspci still useful now that lspci
is no longer installed by default?
I suspect that the chance of it not being available in d-i environment
but somehow installed in /target is very close to zero.

Since Etch will be Debian's first UTF-8 release - implying a migration

what this tool tackles - it would be nice to approve it for Etch.

Hello,

Works fine here, so no comment.

This is because you have the .dmrc file. I don't (I created an empty file to
get past this error when writing my first mail). This file presumably
belongs to gdm, but I don't have gdm (I use "startx"), and your package
installs fine without gdm. Missing dependency?

2) The tool must handle the already-migrated case better (e.g., by adding a
line about that onto the second screen).

It does. Here, it says that the locale is already migrated. It also says
that it cannot find any files utilizing a legacy encoding.

Yes, it does, in the case when the old locale is from .dmrc.

3) The legacy locale for Russia is ru_RU.KOI8-R, not ru_RU, and the
migration tool must handle this special case.

Russian is a messy case. Too many encodings, more than half of which are
OS-specific or otherwise standards that never gained momentum. This is
further complicated by usage cases: while Unices tend to go for KOI8-R,
users that need to interact with Windows use CP1251 instead. Still, it's
up to Russian developers to add support for this; upstream simply cannot
anticipate every possible exception.

OK, I temporarily take this back (because the old report was based on empty
.dmrc - but anyway, you could take the .KOI8-R part from $LANG). However, I
replace my old report with this: when the old .dmrc contains

[Desktop]
Language=ru_RU.KOI8-R

the migration tool migrates this to ru_RU.KOI8-R.UTF-8 which is wrong. Also
it migrates [EMAIL PROTECTED] to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The locale names generally have the form:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] (where .CODESET and @MODIFIERS may or may not be
present). The old codeset and the @euro modifier (but probably not other
modifiers) must be stripped out.

4) migration of encodings is only a part of the game. The most important
part is to deal with packages that do not work correctly in UTF-8 locales
and cannot be fixed (e.g., a2ps). Since this part cannot be automated (as
nobody has created such blacklist), I suggest mentioning this obstacle in
the manual page and on the welcome screen.

Remaining UCS issues really belong in Etch's release notes, since it is
Debian's first release claiming UTF-8 support.

Yes, they do. However, not everyone reads the release notes, so why not
point users to them explicitly on the welcome screen?

Thus, I cannot recommend migration of this package to Etch in its current shape.

And I still say this.

I don't think we explicitly touched any of the files, but it is
possible that we implicitly touched one. I think what we did was:

 1) apt-get source hugs98
 2) import hugs98 source into tla
 3) check out hugs98 source and build it

So, while we did not change the contents of any files, we probably did
change their time stamps relative to one another.

I guess hugs98 is just more sensitive than most of the packages we
usually build.

In any case, our reason for needing to build hugs98 ourselves no
longer exists, so I won't complain if you want to close or ignore this
bug.

thanks!

basically you have dbus-send. Additionally we have our apitest script
that we used for testing the interface. However it might not be suitable
for a general installation.

That must be a bug of the at_console setting of D-Bus. We really on the
security system of D-Bus here. And the general (actually default rule)
is that root and the current console user can change all settings.

This is why we go back to non-discoverable after 180 seconds by default.

Supporting these kind of strange setting would also mean that you know
the address of the adapter you are gonna plug in up-front. In general
you don't. Except you really know what you are doing and then no
interface will fully suit you at all.

It is not useless. It is meaningless, because it is a runtime value. As
long as the adapter is plugged in it is valid, but after that it has no
additional lexical meaning.

This is why "manager.ListAdapters()" and "manager.DefaultAdapter()"
exists to discover the adapters.

The apitest script could easily do this job or the dbusdef.py pre-load
code are really helpful for testing. In general it is really simple to
handle our D-Bus API from within Python. Most things are only a few
lines of Python, but for a base package like bluez-utils you don't wanna
have that dependency.

This always comes up from time to time, but wrapping another C API
around the D-Bus API is really not a good idea. You wanna use D-Bus
directly and fully integrate it.

Using dbus-send only? Yes, that would do.

The attached script generates lumps that are nearly good enough to
substitute in: I just have to make sure the palette indexes don't get
mangled.
#!/bin/sh

while read line; do
set -- $line
file="$1"
width="$2"
height="$3"
shift
shift
shift
text="$*"
text=$(echo "$text" | tr a-z A-Z)

TMP1=$(mktemp)
mv "$TMP1" "$TMP1.png"
TMP1="$TMP1.png"

convert \
  -resize "${width}x${height}!" \
  base.png "$TMP1"

convert -fill red -font Helvetica-Bold\
  -pointsize 16\
-gravity west \
  -draw "text 0,0 '$text'"  \
"$TMP1" "$file"
done < output.txt

Bug#405127: wget doesn't handle IDN domains

2006-12-31 Thread Thomas Perl
Package: wget
Version: 1.10.2-2
Severity: normal

wget doesn't handle IDN domains (domains with umlauts) right.

$ wget -ct0 http://stefan.kögl.co.at/test.tar.gz

--16:07:15--  http://stefan.k%C3%B6gl.co.at/test.tar.gz
   => `test.tar.gz'
Resolving stefan.k\303\266gl.co.at... failed: Name or service not known.

When I manually "translate" the IDN domain name to the "xn--" format,
it works.

GNU libidn seems to offer this functionality already, the URL is
http://www.gnu.org/software/libidn/

libidn is already in Debian, packaged as "libidn11" and "libidn11-dev".

Bug#405030: greylistd: minimum delay should be bound to 15 mins

RFC 2821 describes the protocol, and it would help if you actually read it
before specifying so exactly :) because the relevant stuff is:

4.5.4.1 Sending Strategy
[...]
   The sender MUST delay retrying a particular destination after one
   attempt has failed. In general, the retry interval SHOULD be at
   least 30 minutes; however, more sophisticated and variable strategies
   will be beneficial when the SMTP client can determine the reason for
   non-delivery.
[...]
   Experience suggests that failures are typically transient (the target
   system or its connection has crashed), favoring a policy of two
   connection attempts in the first hour the message is in the queue,
   and then backing off to one every two or three hours.

FWIW.

the patch you posted got applied upstream,
that is the reason i closed the bug, also there was no further info.

please name the linux-image where you still see that issue?

Hi,

Sorry for reporting confusing things *ahem*. I have this bug with
kernels later than 2.6.13.5 (vanilla and debian stock). This bug is
still in latest package "linux-image-2.6.18-3-k7".

I pinpointed the bug to commit
59f4e7d572980a521b7bdba74ab71b21f5995538 in Linus git repository
(2.6.14 vanilla wouldn't reboot, if I reversed this commit, it would).

I can give you more information if necessary.
Thank you.

Afaik, it can't be removed from unstable before oldstable is removed
from the main archive.
