Bug#405098: Many errors and eventual failure when Copy data from partition used on partition with dir_index
Package: debian-installer Severity: important i386 using RC1 netinst image I am copying my Debian installation onto a new hard drive with LVM and encrypted swap and /tmp. I tried to use the installer's option to Copy data from partition, but after I selected the source partition, it complained about parted not being able to resize a partition that had dir_index enabled, saying that parted can only resize it if it disables dir_index first. I don't know why it would need to resize any of the partitions just to copy data from one partition to another, and I'm not sure if it was referring to the source partition, or the new, blank partition. The options in the dialog were Ignore, Cancel, and Go Back. The first time I selected Ignore, and it started copying the data. At the end of the copy process, it started giving a series of error dialogs saying, Block 2490887 shouldn't have been marked (1, 0)! Choosing Continue caused it to pop up several more times, but the first number in the parentheses would double each time, and the block number would increase as well, though only by a few. After three or four of those, it would pop up a larger dialog saying, Assertion (block EXT2_SUPER_BLOCKS_COUNT)fs-sb)) at ../../../../libparted/fs/ext2/ext2.h:226 in function ext2_is_data_block() failed. \n\n A bug has been discovered! \n\n Ignore \n Cancel (added \n myself to indicate newlines in error dialog) Choosing Ignore caused more of the block shouldn't have been marked errors, and after a few more of those, I'd get another one of this same larger error. IIRC, after getting into this situation, choosing Cancel or Go Back did the same as choosing Ignore, and the only way to get out of it was to reboot. But if I chose Cancel or Go Back when the first warning about resizing with dir_index appeared, all I got was a blank debconf screen, blue with a gray bay at the bottom, and no text. I rebooted then too. I've described this to the best of my recollection. Apologies for any errors. I will follow up with a few photos I took of some errors after I get my system running on the new disk. In the end, I used the rescue mode to use the Guided Partitioning for LVM and crypto setup, but then switched to a console and am copying over the data manually after making symlinks to the necessary libs so I could use GNU cp rather than busybox's. P.S. Is there no room for the GNU utils on the netinst iso? Busybox is nice but, for example, has no --help for cp, and no -v for cp either. I don't know about you, but when I'm copying tens of gigs of data, I'd like -v so I can see that it's working. :) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? When I upload data (via Samba, SCP etc.) after a couple of seconds (20-30 MBs of a big file transferred), the transfer stalls. Downloads are fine, and the stalls don't happen. Initially, I thought it's a Samba problem - see this thread: http://lists.samba.org/archive/samba/2006-November/127084.html for I found a workaround for that: putting socket options = TCP_NODELAY IPTOS_LOWDELAY SO_KEEPALIVE SO_RCVBUF=4096 SO_SNDBUF=4096 into smb.conf (normally, you would put 8192 instead of 2096 there).. Bug#405102: installation-report: Include info on which PCI device is in used by which kernel module
Package: installation-report Version: 2.25 Severity: important Tags: patch In bug #403876 I got code for discover-data from Auke Kok to extract which PCI devices the various kernel modules are attached to. This information would make it a lot easier to figure out which kernel module have a problem if the Debian installation isn't working as it should, so I believe it is important to get it included in the installation-report package in Etch. I set severity important because of this. Here is a patch to enable it, based on the current svn code. I've tested it on my installed system, but not in the udeb / d-i environment. Bug#405103: selinux-policy-refpolicy-targeted: Multiple problems with courier policy
Package: selinux-policy-refpolicy-targeted Version: 0.0.20061018-2 Severity: normal The targeted refpolicy has a number of issues that prevent courier's IMAP and SSL servers from working: * courier.fc specifies labelling for most of courier's files, but virtually all of these have the -- constraint which makes them apply only to (regular) files. This means that /var/run/courier/authdaemon doesn't get labelled, and hence when the authdaemon socket is created therein, it has the type var_run_t. The other courier components aren't allowed to read var_run_t (they have courier_var_run_t instead), so authentication breaks. Removing the -- from this line in courier.fc seems to fix it: /var/run/courier(/.*)? -- gen_context(system_u:object_r:courier_var_run_t,s0) * courier.fc also has a specific label the authdaemon executables, whose path expression /usr/lib(64)?/courier/authlib/.* doesn't match the Debian packages; the correct pattern for Debian's paths would be /usr/lib(64)?/courier/courier-authlib/.* . This leaves authdaemon running in initrc_t or something equally unhelpful. Changing this line in courier.fc takes care of it: - /usr/lib(64)?/courier/authlib/.*-- gen_context(system_u:object_r:courier_authdaemon_exec_t,s0) + /usr/lib(64)?/courier/(courier-)?authlib/.*-- gen_context(system_u:object_r:courier_authdaemon_exec_t,s0) * The POP IMAP servers still can't connect to authdaemon, because they're in courier_pop_t while authdaemon is in courier_authdaemon_t (with the above fix). The fc gives courier_pop_t read/write permissions on courier_authdaemon_t:tcp_socket, but authdaemon listens on a UNIX domain socket; I'm not entirely sure it _can_ listen for TCP. This policy seems to fix it, although adding another line in upstream's courier.te allowing the same access from courier_pop_t to courier_authdaemon_t:unix_stream_socket that's now permitted on tcp_socket would probably be preferable. allow courier_pop_t courier_authdaemon_t:unix_stream_socket { connectto read write }; * authdaemon doesn't work in itself, because although it can connect to its own UNIX domain socket, it can't accept connections or do anything else with them. Um, yeah. This fixes it for me: - allow courier_authdaemon_t self:unix_stream_socket connectto; + allow courier_authdaemon_t self:unix_stream_socket { connectto listen accept read write }; * courier-imap-ssl (and probably the SSL POP daemon also, but I didn't try that one) use an SSL session cache in /var/lib/courier/; it's created by the first writer. However, because the fc only labels files, the directory itself stays labelled as var_lib_t and the cache can't be created (and if it could, it would have the wrong type.) Here's the offending line; removing the -- and relabelling fixes this one: /var/lib/courier(/.*)? -- gen_context(system_u:object_r:courier_var_lib_t,s0) * Once connected, the IMAP server can't setuid/setgid to the proper account, if so specified by the userdb, because it hasn't been granted either of those capabilities. courier_pcp_t (that's a C) can, but courier_pop_t can't. Hence: allow courier_pop_t self:capability { setgid setuid }; * The IMAP server also can't read symlinks in user_home_t. These are often placed inside a Maildir to expose another maildir/mbox as a subfolder. This restores that ability, to no significant loss of security I can see on the face of it: allow courier_pop_t user_home_t:lnk_file read; * Finally, courier-imap has sometime recently started using fam to watch for changes in the Maildir. This involves going through portmap, connecting to arbitrary ports to talk to famd, etc. Bleh. It's optional, and if the attempt fails it will poll the directory instead, but it makes a fair amount of noise in the logs (the attempt is repeated on every write to the maildir) -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-3-amd64 Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages selinux-policy-refpolicy-targeted depends on: ii libpam-modules0.79-4 Pluggable Authentication Modules f ii libselinux1 1.32-3 SELinux shared libraries ii policycoreutils 1.32-1 SELinux core policy utilities ii python2.4.4-2An interactive high-level object-o Versions of packages selinux-policy-refpolicy-targeted recommends: ii checkpolicy 1.32-1 SELinux policy compiler pn setools none (no description available) -- debconf-show failed -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#405107: libgtk1.2-common: Request for proper fontset for UTF-8 locales.
Package: libgtk1.2-common Version: 1.2.10-18 Severity: wishlist The default fontset in gtkrc.utf-8 are: fontset = -*-arial-medium-r-normal--*-120-*-*-*-*-iso10646-1,\ -*-helvetica-medium-r-normal--*-120-*-*-*-*-*-* But the arial and helvetica fonts in debian do not contain any UTF-8 CJK characters. So that made all gtk+ 1.2 apps cannot display correctly under CJK locales. To avoid this problem, we can put the proper fontset either in gtkrc.utf-8 or in each of gtkrc.{zh_TW,zh_CN,ja_JP,ko_KR}.utf-8. I tested this fontset works very under zh_TW.UTF-8 locale: fontset = -*-umingmbe-medium-r-normal--*-120-*-*-*-*-iso10646-1,\ -*-uming-medium-r-normal--*-120-*-*-*-*-iso10646-1,\ -*-arial-medium-r-normal--*-120-*-*-*-*-iso10646-1,\ -*-helvetica-medium-r-normal--*-120-*-*-*-*-*-* And I wish this could be included in etch as well, cause incorrect display always scare users away. -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-3-686 Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#404662: dwww: File conflict with iceweasel
tags 404662 pending thanks Hi Here's a patch for this bug, together with three other hunks that should go into an NMU (restart apache properly, remove webserver configuration snippet properly, and spanish debconf translation update). Thanks for the patch, it looks OK. I'm not going to NMU this myself, unless requested by the maintainer until Friday (tomorrow) afternoon, because the RC bug is quite young and I will be on vacation from Saturday on. I had been rather busy for the last 6 months and had no time for properly maintaining my packages :(, but hopefully the situation has changed lately. I will upload fixed dwww in the next three days. Bug#338405: another patch
On Sunday 31 December 2006 20:33, maximilian attems wrote: well the patch description is different to the patch itself. kinit is not used in initramfs-tools and is not removed in the patch below, what you remove are dash and minips from klibc-utils. Sorry for the mis-description, I presume that the intent is clear though. no this patch has the same fundamental problems than the one that was merged for 0.85d. It is different in that it's a second option, so it is possible to have busybox without replacing all the non-busybox parts. * ugly: once busybox has a busybox --list, there would be no need to invoke tail, tr, sed and grep. Good point, I filed a but report against busybox about that. * wrong: the busybox counterparts to the klibc-utils are not functinality equivalent. as written in the changelog documenting the revert for example sleep doesn't take subsecond args. quite sure that there is other breakage too as experienced by the sheer number of boot failures of 0.85d. Such things of course will be less likely to be found if there is no easy option of creating an initramfs that uses it. The last patch that I sent will give no different result unless you set ONLY_BUSYBOX=y, so I can't imagine it causing any problems for anyone. The sleep bug is reported as below: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=341403 Having this code in mkinitramfs makes it more likely that the busybox bugs will get fixed. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#384379: [Pkg-bluetooth-maintainers] Bug#384379: WORK-AROUND for iscan not set
Hi Hendrik, I am not sure why SCAN_INQUIRY is not set in discovto is not 0 (see hcid/main.c:295). This is probably to not make it discoverable after plugging the bt dongle in and thus correct behaviour. However, I do not know of any user program that can actually handle that (kdebluetooth cannot). Thus, in Etch, discovto 0 should be the default setting! A specific configuration for each dongle is already possible in hcid.conf, so there is no problem to do configuration for specific devices. It actually IS possible to correctly fix this before Etch! great, thanks for investigating this. I'm going to add discovto 0; as default plus adding some documentation about the [IP]SCAN problem. Can I quote this mail? Yes, maybe correct grammatical mistakes if present. Note that deleting the config file in /var/lib/bluetooth is an essential part of the solution. this is a big _NO_. Don't mess with the configuration storage directly. The configuration storage has priority over the hcid.conf file and this is meant to be this way. The iscan and pscan config option are some legacy option that are still available for some strange corner cases for some embedded distros and they are not meant for general and permanent configuration. If people don't learn that hcid.conf are proposed default values for the cold run only, then I might simply remove the whole file in the next upstream release. So stop writing ugly distribution specific hacks and better ask upstream for it. There might might a real bug hiding somewhere. I did some testing with udev and the problem actually also is a kernel problem. There is some strange dependency between the uevent call to udev and hcid detecting the device: A udev script can only act when the bt dongle is plugged _in_ (ACTION==add) because on removal, the address sysfs attribute is not available anymore (removed too early). The rule to call a script for removal can thus look like: SUBSYSTEM==bluetooth, ACTION==add, RUN+=some/script The actual script may look like: -some/script-- #!/bin/sh BLUEZ_CONF_DIR=/var/lib/bluetooth sleep 5 BDADDR=$(cat /sys${DEVPATH}/address) CONF_FILE=${BLUEZ_CONF_DIR}/${BDADDR}/config rm -f ${CONF_FILE} -- The sleep is a hack (else the BDADDR is 00:00:00:00:00:00) and I did not test how bad this interacts with what hcid does. You cannot do this with hcid itself because it cannot differ between already present when starting (coldplug) and hotplug. Solution can be the above script with added dbus init call (hcid and dbus must be started before udev, then) and disabled autoinit in hcid. First of all this is an ugly hack and has no right to exist. Second the configuration storage is meant to be permanent. Bug#319837: Not really a BUG...
This is not really a BUG of GRUB... it's just that BIOS tables are getting bigger! Memtest86(+) uses the standard linux kernel image format, so it it can be loaded easily by boot loaders such as Lilo and Grub... Memtest uses the old format. The boot loader also loads a copy of boot sector and setup sectors at 0x9 (and then execute the setup code): || 0A ++ | Reserved for BIOS | Do not use. Reserved for BIOS EBDA. 09A000 ++ | Stack/heap/cmdline| For use by the kernel real-mode code. 098000 ++ | Kernel setup | The kernel real-mode code. 090200 ++ | Kernel boot sector| The kernel legacy boot sector. 09 ++ | Protected-mode kernel | The bulk of the kernel image. 01 ++ | Boot loader | - Boot sector entry point :7C00 001000 ++ | Reserved for MBR/BIOS | 000800 ++ | Typically used by MBR | 000600 ++ | BIOS use only | 00 ++ For the details read this: http://lxr.linux.no/source/Documentation/i386/boot.txt So, basically, this layout assumes that memory up to address 0x9A000 can be used. The problem is that the newer BIOSes are reserving more and more space in the top addresses below 640k (low memory), so this layout got broken... and GRUB cannot do anything about it. I hit this problem a few days ago switching from an old Athlon64 based system to a Core2Duo base one. If you have an x86_64 system you shold have something like this in the dmesg (it's not printed on x86 if I rember correctly, you can look at /proc/iomem anyway): [0.00] BIOS-provided physical RAM map: [0.00] BIOS-e820: - 0008f000 (usable) [0.00] BIOS-e820: 0008f000 - 000a (reserved) [0.00] BIOS-e820: 000e - 0010 (reserved) [0.00] BIOS-e820: 0010 - 3e599000 (usable) [0.00] BIOS-e820: 3e599000 - 3e5a6000 (reserved) [0.00] BIOS-e820: 3e5a6000 - 3e655000 (usable) [0.00] BIOS-e820: 3e655000 - 3e6a6000 (ACPI NVS) [0.00] BIOS-e820: 3e6a6000 - 3e6ab000 (ACPI data) [0.00] BIOS-e820: 3e6ab000 - 3e6ac000 (usable) [0.00] BIOS-e820: 3e6ac000 - 3e6f2000 (ACPI NVS) [0.00] BIOS-e820: 3e6f2000 - 3e6ff000 (ACPI data) [0.00] BIOS-e820: 3e6ff000 - 3e70 (usable) [0.00] BIOS-e820: 3e70 - 3f00 (reserved) [0.00] BIOS-e820: fff0 - 0001 (reserved) This table is provided by the BIOS and basically tells what memory regions can or can't be used by the system (because reserved by BIOS, for example). The first line tells that, on my system, the limit of usable low memory is 8f000, which breaks the above layout assumption... On my Athlon64 based machine (ASUS K8VSE Deluxe) it was 9FC00, and in fact it worked. Conclusion: memtest86 should use some other method of loading... Bug#403863: initscripts: Stray file /lib/init/rw/.ramfs not in package list
Sorry! Please note, that if I was insulting anything, it was a file, not any person. Please don't be quite so testy! I should have said Probably violates the Debian rules for the filesystem hierarchy standard, as shown on http://www.debian.org/doc/packaging-manuals/fhs/fhs-2.3.html#LIBESSENTIALSHAREDLIBRARIESANDKERN According to that document, /lib is reserved for shared library images needed to boot the system and run the commands in the root filesystem. My understanding is that /lib/init/rw/.ramfs is not a shared library image, so it probably shouldn't be there. If there *is* a good reason, that's one thing, but please stick to the technical issues. Petter Reinholdtsen wrote: [Greg Kochanski] The file /lib/init/rw/.ramfs is created, presumably by initscripts. It's not in the package list, and that's not at all a good place to dynamically create a file. Not to mention, putting a hidden file under /lib is pretty low-class. I did not quite get what problem you are describing. not a good place and pretty low-class do not seem like descriptions of a bug nor a problem to me. They more visualises your personal values, and I'm not sure how it is relevant for the boot system. /lib/init/rw/.ramfs is created by the initscripts to flag that the directory is a ramfs. It is intentional hidden to avoid name conflict with anything we want to store there. Friendly, -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#405117: hnb: broken new node behavior - sometimes losing fresh entries
Package: hnb Version: 1.9.18-3 Severity: normal Hi, this is a known bug, but since upstream no longer maintains hnb and the mailing-list hnb-general is full of spam I think it is a good idea do document in Debian's BTS. I use the following wordaround in context main: bind left right bind ..left bind ..left Below the original bugreport which can be found at: http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=5124126forum_id=1839 Regards, Carsten Changing the - new node behavior From: Whit Blauvelt - 2004-07-14 15:55 Hi, After not using hnb for awhile, Im back to heavy use of it since getting a Zaurus 860 and putting pdaXrom on it, and hnb 1.9.18 (it says it is - but is it a pre?) from the feed at pdaXrom.org. My main frustration is that I was sometimes losing fresh entries, and it took awhile to pin down why. Its just the entries made after using the right arrow when theres not already a subentry on an item, so that it opens a new one for typing. In this state, the left arrow key (among others) deletes the entry. And while theres a contextual clue in the high-lighting, as to whether the entry has been saved or not, this isnt enough to keep me from sometimes automatically hitting the left arrow to return to the parent entry. I havent been able to figure out a way to set .hnbrc to be sure that the parent saves whatever Ive just typed before going anywhere - or alternately a way to have the right arrow enter fully into the normal editing mode (where left-arrow is safe) when theres no submode existing to move to. I have done a partial work-around of resetting tab in context main to bind tab insert_below bind .. indent bind .. edit which opens a new submode for safe editing, but that still doesnt remove the possibility of getting into new-mode editing where its _not_ safe. I imagine the behavior with the right arrow openning a new node can be removed in the source, but since Im using a compiled ARM version here Id rather find a way to fix it in .hnbrc, if there is one. Thanks, Whit Re: Changing the - new node behavior From: Whit Blauvelt - 2004-07-16 12:31 Found the way to disable the dangerous behavior of the right arrow of openning a new subnode when the right arrow is pressed in main mode and there is none existing yet: bind right go right (replacing bind right right) Then, as mentioned before, a safe way of openning a subnote for editing is by binding this to tab (whose complete default I havent grokked the essense of anyhow) or any other spare key: bind tab insert_below bind .. indent bind .. edit Whit -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#397179: suhosin patch
Hi all, it's nice to hear that this patch will be included in Debian. I'm currently using PHP with suhosin patch (and suhosin module) on several production systems (i386, amd64, some still running php5.1) without problems (only had to increase some varfilter limits in the module configuration). The only problem I encountered is a build problem: the patch modifies both configure and configure.in (which is nice if suhosin is the only patch to be applied), but this prevents recreation of configure (which is required by several Debian patches to configure.in) due to timestamp magic on fast machines. My fix: I just removed the configure specific patch from the suhosin patch, letting the build system take care of configure recreation. Happy New Year! Bug#403794: Package: base Debian ETCH will not recognize the CD-ROM
[rant] The bottom line: I guess the DEBIAN community has really not changed it's attitude over the YEARS if your post is an example of what I can expect in terms of help. I went out of my way to DIAGNOSE a problem and ask about help in resolving it. I do HARDWARE real well, not SOFTWARE. The creation of the X-MP and Y-MP systems are good examples of that. I cut my teeth on UNIX SVR4 and remember what a nightmare it was to get X running. I see nothing in Frans Pop mail that was anything but trying to help you to be on the right way solving your problems. In your general rant, you seem to forget about an interesting characteristic of the Debian community: it is a community of volunteers (please note that I took care to avoid shouting the way you seem to like). You cannot expect volunteers to be ready to help you without any effort from your side. What you can expect in terms of help is what a volunteer is ready to give you from his free time in terms of help. There are many contractors who would be delighted to assist you setting up your servers, in case you're missing the needed experience for this. If I remember correctly, the Debian web site includes a page with such contacts in many countries. In that case and in that case only you could expect help and rant about not getting it. I have FOUR Proliant systems which are used as PERSONAL systems. That gives me time to play with different distros and look at the + and - of each. The GENERAL community looks at DEBIAN as a PITA to configure and point to it as an example as to why M$ products are better. Is that the attitude you want DEBIAN to maintain? Mark S. has created what appears to be a POLISHED DEBIAN based product THAT WORKS WELL OUT OF THE BOX!! You might maybe be interested to learn that Ubuntu is built onthe Debian installer and actually at least one major contributor of the Ubuntu development is also one of the major contributors of the Debian Installer team. Ubuntu made compromises about the freeness of software (including device drivers) that Debian will not make (please read about the Debian Social Contract for detailed reasons). That may very well explain what you encoutered when you tried to install Debian on your servers. UBUNTU even offers a working implementation of Edgy Eft for a COMPAQ server! ETCH had a problem and I thought I could help out. ( There are many PROLIANT 3000 systems still out in the SERVER world ) I guess I was mistaken. I resolved my problem by installing KUBUNTU/UBUNTU Server packages. The best of BOTH worlds. High level tools to get the job done. Now on to CLUSTERKNOPPIX and some SUPERCOMPUTER design You can close this bug report out if you wish, but from MY viewpoint, there are SEVERAL problems that need to be addressed. I suggest that this rant be kicked up to the people who complained about PAYING people to finish a DEBIAN product . [/rant] This rant was inappropriate. Period. You're not talking to some slaves of yours, Sir, even with your so incredibly experience of computers that seems to come back from a period of history where both you and I were carving bytes in stone. PS: you might want to check the status of the key called Caps Lock on your keyboard (this is the key left to the A key). It seems that it has some jerky behaviour that makes it lock for some long period of time and be unlocked by your Space key. In a volunteer community, that key is more generally disabled to avoid any high raise of the community's blood pressure. signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#404236: emacs-snapshot: mis-detected charset in text file with ASCII-only HTML
Hi Vincent, Vincent Lefevre writes: When I open the attached file with emacs-snapshot-gtk emacs22-encoding the 3 accented characters are displayed as: \303\251\303\250\303\252 Without the HTML lines, the file is opened correctly. Yes, that's because you have a different encoding specified in the META tag of the HTML snippet, and Emacs uses it to set the encoding for the buffer. You have two solutions: - add -*- coding: utf-8 -*- at the top of your file to specify that this file is to be read as utf-8 (this disables auto-detection); or - move the HTML snippet out of the first 1K bytes (or last 3K bytes) of the buffer to prevent it from being recognized automatically (which is less practical). I'm not sure that this really qualifies as a bug -- in almost all cases, using the encoding specified in the HTML headers is the right thing to do regardless of what's really in the buffer. And disabling auto-detection can be achieved easily on a per-file basis with a coding cookie, as shown above. Bug#405123: Misnamed default html page in lighttpd unstable
Package: lighttpd Version: 1.4.13-7 After installing a fresh version of this package, and pointing my web browser to http://localhost/, I do not receive the normal default page. Instead, I get a directory index page, with the file index.lighttpdhtml file listed. Seems the conf file is looking for a different file name /etc/lighttpd/lighttpd.conf:22 index-file.names = ( index.lighttpd.html, index.php, index.html,+ index.htm, default.htm ) Looks like a missing dot is needed. Changing /var/www/index.lighttpdhtml to /var/www/index.lighttpd.html fixes the problem. Cheers, Anna Lissa
Bug#384379: [Pkg-bluetooth-maintainers] Bug#384379: WORK-AROUND for iscan not set
Hi Filippo, Yes, maybe correct grammatical mistakes if present. Marcel, can you confirm the actual solution is the one you indicated in http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=384379#msg10 ? Jaime, could you please retry as well? bluez 3.7 is both in testing and unstable. actually adding discovto 0 as default in hcid.conf is fine. That is a decision the distros can make. And it seems that most of them are doing this at the moment. If people don't learn that hcid.conf are proposed default values for the cold run only, then I might simply remove the whole file in the next upstream release. So stop writing ugly distribution specific hacks and better ask upstream for it. There might might a real bug hiding somewhere. If hcid.conf values are there only for a cold run I think it needs to be documented, I didn't found anything in hcid.conf(5) though, is it documented somewhere? It should be documented. If not, then that is the real bug here. Feel free to send in patches for the manual pages. Regards Marcel -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#316932: apcupsd: There's still problems with killpower

Or: compile apcupsd statically linked against those 'troublesome' libraries. I think this was suggested previously. While it would require keeping on top of any security updates for those libraries, and bloat the binary, it would make really sure they're always available. Remounting /usr is a clever hack but one that seems a bit outside the scope of this package to do. It would be nice for this step to go away for all systems, not just ones mounting /usr from LVM/RAID. Bug#384379: [Pkg-bluetooth-maintainers] Bug#384379: WORK-AROUND for iscan not set
Hi Hendrik, Note that deleting the config file in /var/lib/bluetooth is an essential part of the solution. this is a big _NO_. Don't mess with the configuration storage directly. The configuration storage has priority over the hcid.conf file and this is meant to be this way. And that's not written down anywhere in the user documentation. that is the real bug here. Patches for documentation updates are always welcome. The iscan and pscan config option are some legacy option that are still available for some strange corner cases for some embedded distros and they are not meant for general and permanent configuration. So what's the proposal? Configuration files have to be in /etc and not in /var/lib! Actually that is not fully correct. The values in /etc are supposed to be changed be an administrator the values in /var/lib can be changed by the daemon. And that is exactly what happens. The administrator should be able to change the default (visibility or not) or there should be an always working default. The default is not visible (due security reasons) and if you decide it to switch it to visible (even with a low-level HCI command) it will only stay visible for 180 seconds. That is the default starting with 3.x. That is currently not the case because the bluetooth guys change stuff but the user frontends do catch up a bit late. Just remember the passkey situation and this is pretty much the same. It probably gets solved in the long run but that's a strange idea of development :-/ It is actually solved for all GNOME and command line users. I don't know about the KDE guys, but I am sure they have something similar. If people don't learn that hcid.conf are proposed default values for the cold run only, then I might simply remove the whole file in the next upstream release. So stop writing ugly distribution specific hacks and better ask upstream for it. There might might a real bug hiding somewhere. It probably is the better alternative with exceptions: * you cannot change the mode of devices that are currently not plugged in That is true. The case to change settings for not active devices is kinda strange. I know that there might be corner cases, but I never fully got convinced that this is needed. * you can only refer to devices by using the device name, not the address Actually you can use manager.FindAdapter(address) to get the path for an adapter. Remember that the path for an adapter is only a string. It has no real meaning. You shouldn't trust that they stay the same.
