Except that a binNMU will still pick up a dependency on 'binutils', which is
still wrong.

I find four packages in the archive that are picking up a dependency on
'binutils' by way of shlibs: ggcov, nitpic, skyeye, and sysprof.

nitpic needs libbfd-2.16.91.so, that's nice...

ggcov, sysprof, and skyeye at least manage to have binary packages in stable
that depend on the matching version of binutils.

But all four packages are buggy, as is binutils for providing broken shlibs.
The shlibs provided by binutils are effectively not supportable in a stable
release; which means that until binutils has reasonable shlibs (perhaps
using a virtual package name, the way apt does for its library?), packages
should not be dynamically linking to libbfd.

No binNMUs scheduled -- that would fix the current brokenness of the binary
packages in unstable, but wouldn't fix the root RC bug.

Thanks,

I see no reason for this bug to be assigned to aptitude.

Moreover, as you give no details except vague messages about what you
experienced, I do'nt think that aptitude maintainer can do anything
about this.

This bug will either rot in the BTS or just be closed without
"solution".

As you mentioned VmWare, please note that it is known that VmWare
version 5 doesn't boot 2.6.21 any longer.

/usr/lib/j2sdk1.6-sun is a correct place to look. Its the place where
java-package puts SUN JDK 6. The issue in this case was that I used
/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-sun (which doesnt exist) instead of
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun.
I got a bit fooled by the /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun entry.

Anyway, the next upload will fix this. Thanks for reporting the issue.

Cheers,
Michael

Bug#430189: gnome-speech: General update after the debconf review process

2007-07-15 Thread Christian Perrier
Dear Debian maintainer,

On Saturday, June 02, 2007, I sent you a notification about the beginning of a
review
action on debconf templates for gnome-speech.

Then, I sent you a bug report with rewritten templates and announcing
the beginning of the second phase of this action: call for translation
updates.

Translators have been working hard and here is now the result of their efforts.

Please consider using it EVEN if you committed files to your
development tree as long as they were reported.

The attached tarball contains:

- debian/changelog with the list of changes
- debian/control with rewrites of packages' descriptions
- debian/ with all the rewritten templates file(s)
- debian/po/*.po with all PO files (existing ones and new ones)

As said, please use *at least* the PO files as provided here,
preferrably over those sent by translators in their bug reports. All
of them have been checked and reformatted. In some cases, formatting
errors have been corrected.

The patch-nopo file contains a patch for the templates and control file(s).

Please note that this patch applies to the templates and control
file(s) of your package as of Saturday, June 02, 2007. If your package was
updated
in the meantime, I may have updated my reference copybut I also
may have missed that. This is indeed why I suggested you do not
modified such files while the review process was running,
remember..:-)

It is now safe to upload a new package version with these changes.

Please notify me of your intents with regards to this.

There is of course no hurry to update your package but feel free to
contact me in case you would need sponsoring or any other action to
fix this.

That's probably expected. See #411141.

About #415227, does changing
/apps/compiz/general/screen0/options/unredirect_fullscreen_windows in

Sorry for the long delay.

Can you please retry with using sun-java5-jdk instead of
java-gcj-compat as runtime? This might be working.
Another options is to try with eclipse 3.2.2-1.

Please report back if anything of this helps or not.

Cheers,

Bug#431811: nvidia-glx-legacy-96xx: black screen on X startup for geforce 420/440 go cards

2007-07-15 Thread David Wührer
I have a 420 MX, and use the 96xx driver.

I also always got a black screen when starting up.
What worked for me was to out-comment some lines in /etc/runlevel.conf,
preventing the scripts from being executed.

The lines are:

#20 0,1,6 2,3,4,5 /etc/init.d/nvidia-kernel
#20 0,1,6 2,3,4,5 /etc/init.d/nvidia-glx-legacy-96xx

This is a bug in pm-utils. It doesn't accept a dash `-' in the service
name, which is a bit stupid. I'll try to fix that.

In which sense version 2 is not compatible with 1.x?

> Due to this issues packages for both versions should be available in lenny.

Keeping version 1.x in debian has the (grave) problem that it depends on
numarray that, besides having known problems with 64-bit platforms, it
is not being maintained anymore (the numarray makers are strongly
encouraging people to migrate to NumPy [1]). So, I'm afraid that
keeping PyTables 1.x series in lenny will only be a source of problems.
Being said that, I'm ok if anybody would go ahead and be in charge of
maintaining the 1.x series in debian (at his own responsability).

I've added setlinebuf() calls to the code in cvs. That should have the
same effect and I do not have to remember to add flush if I add other

The solution is actually to make bts (the command in devscripts)
slightly more powerful, which I have done with the patch for #433169.

If you apply that patch, you can then do the following:

bts submitter $(bts select submitter:[EMAIL PROTECTED]) [EMAIL PROTECTED];

or similar bouts of madness.

Bug#433187: linux-2.6 - [sparc64-smp] produces unkillable processes

2007-07-15 Thread Bastian Blank
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.18-5
Severity: grave
Forwarded: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

sparc64 kernels produces unkillable dpkg-query processes (only seen in a
buildd environment yet). Each process sucks one cpu and 3GiB of memory.
Even the OOM killer is not able to kill them.

This problem exists up to 2.6.21 (and most likely also .22) and makes it
mostly impossible to run a reliable buildd.

The problem was forwarded to upstream[1] but no response yet.

Since the coredump is in libc/vfscanf, I'm guessing this may be 64 bit +
locale related.

Could you try these steps?

1. Unset LANG LC_CTYPE LC_ALL and other locale related variables and try
to start.

2. print the variables to get_response() (like gdb monit ; run ; up ; up
; up ; print s; print H )

3. (a bit more work) upgrade to a newer libc and recompile with that.

I'm also CC'ing upstream if they have some ideas.

 Stefan

Bug#433188: ikiwiki: img plugin does not always need to provide a link

Hi,

currently images included with the image plugin always provide a link to
the image. Sometimes this may not be needed, it may be enough to just
show the image. Currently one has to use HTML to do that.

Possible patch, using a 'link="no"' parameter to implement this:

Bug#433190: inhibit /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume creation in chroot

2007-07-15 Thread Kel Modderman
Package: initramfs-tools
Version: 0.89
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

Hi maks,

When installing initramfs-tools in a chroot, I'd like to propose
that /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume not be created.

debian-live and other custom debian distributions build their system up in a
chroot environment, therefore it is not good for the resulting
initramfs-tools generated initial ramdisk to be configured for the system
that hosted the original chroot.

Plus, who can use suspend in a chroot environment? ;-)

Patch is attached. chrooted() function borrowed from udev's postinst.

Thanks, Kel.

Your software violates against the GPL, because it uses libscg
which is under CDDL.
And as a Fellow of the Free Software Foundation Europe

Are you sure this isn't simply that the datestamps on the man pages

Bug#433192: python-turbogears: Wrong imports for ElementTree if running with python2.5

2007-07-15 Thread Michael Bienia
Package: python-turbogears
Version: 1.0.2.2-1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

Hi,

turbogears uses elementtree. As elementtree was included in python2.5
the python-elementtree doesn't support python2.5. Therefore the imports
in turbogears needs to be fixed to import the correct module when
running with python2.5.

I've filed upstream a bug report about it:
http://trac.turbogears.org/ticket/1441
The attached patch tries to import xml.etree first and fall-backs to
importing elementtree. It was applied into upstream svn as rev3262:

Please test if this is fixed in 2.6.21/.22.

Bastian

Hi,

tested on 2.6.21, result = success (sensors isn't stucked and hardware
sensors reading is ok)
not tested back on 2.6.18 after a reboot cause of another issue with...
an init script/udev (stuck on floppy drive query ?, no floppy drive in
my box, boot was ok previously). Anyone have suggestions about this issue ?

Regards.

Bug#419890: include aoTuV patch

Would there then, be the possibility of having another binary package
built from the libvorbis sources producing, say, libvorbis-aotuv, for
those that would prefer that as the encoder of choice?

This would, indeed, be a quite nice addition to the package, especially
for those that want to encode voice (I use it to encode my classes and,
at quality -2, it gives superb crispness, which is not achieved by the
reference encoder at level -1 or even 0).

Some words like "Caution! This package contains an experimental patch"
in the description of the binary package would be sufficient, I guess.
Please let me know what you think.

Sorry. I am not used to bazaar. I thought that it was just like, say,
websvn, where you can browse the sources without having to use a
specific tool. But it was nice to learn this behavior, as this is my
first contact with bazaar. :-)

Thanks, Rogério Brito.

These kind of lies are boring!

Get informed and do not spread lies that have been created by people
with commercial interests.

IF _you_ repeat the lies from a small numbers of OSS haters in Debian, _you_
are actively part of the defamation campaign.

Cdrtools do not have any license problem. Inform yourself about the term "work"
that the GPL is based on and read GPLv2 § 2 last paragraph.

Also do NOT believe the incorrect GPL FAQ from the FSF that is completely based
in the irrelevent term "linking" which does not appear anywhere in the GPL.

The Debiam speudofork has been created out of hate and hate cannot create free
software.

BTW: YOU dod break a law by pulling a private mail into the public!

Bug#433193: evince-gtk: Only ASCII characters are copied to clipboard

2007-07-15 Thread Mathias Brodala
Package: evince-gtk
Version: 0.9.0-1
Severity: normal

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Copying a text containing non-ASCII characters results in those characters being
omitted from the copy action. Pasting in another application afterwards proves
this; those characters are just missing.

Have a look at the example PDF containing the German word "Mühle" (mill).
Copying and pasting results in "Mhle". I tested this for some other characters
too and it seems that Evince cannot handle Unicode here.

I have just managed to reproduce this problem using autoconf 2.13 on

Uninstalling autoconf 2.13 meant that autoconf 2.50 was run and

Bug#430524: postgresql-8.2: suggested workaround works for me

2007-07-15 Thread Jon Daley
Package: postgresql-8.2
Version: 8.2.4-2
Followup-For: Bug #430524

My /usr/share/postgresql/8.2/timezone directory was empty, and I was a little
uneasy about making a symlink and
having something erase my /usr/share/timezone directory too, so I copied the
contents instead of symlinking, and they
were erased on next postgresql's restart. I made a backup of
/usr/share/timezone and symlink'ed the directory, and
now it is fine. Thanks for the information.

I'm afraid that "most likely" is not answering the question.

However, you are referring to a third-party driver that could be
packaged separately, the same way that "cups-pdf" was. I'm thus gonna
reassign this to wnpp and call it an RFP.

Start printall, telnet to any opensocket and type in some stuff. only
the data from the server side is repported.

Bug#433195: libxmlrpc-c3-dev: libxmlrpc_cpp.so file is missing or xmlrpc-c-config is generating wrong ouput for linker

2007-07-15 Thread Emil Nowak
Package: libxmlrpc-c3-dev
Version: 0.9.10-4
Severity: normal

When you try to build example from
/usr/share/doc/libxmlrpc-c3-dev/examples/meerkat-app-list.cc
with linker flags as described in overview.txt:
CLIENT_LIBS=`xmlrpc-c-config c++ libwww-client --libs`
You will get a lot of undefined symbols
meerkat-app-list.cc:(.text+0x149): undefined reference to
`XmlRpcValue::makeStruct()'
meerkat-app-list.cc:(.text+0x15f): undefined reference to
`XmlRpcValue::makeInt(int)'
[...] and so on...
$ xmlrpc-c-config is generating "-lxmlrpc_cpp" flag but there is no
/usr/lib/libxmlrpc_cpp.so file, and that's why it probably fails.

You can always build it that way:
$ g++ libwww-client --libs` meerkat-app-list.o /usr/lib/libxmlrpc_cpp.a -o test

So I think that xmlrpc-c-config should not put this "-lxmlrpc_cpp" in LDFLAGS
or there should be appropriate *.so library provided.

Bug#373720: kdeprint can't connect to cups server through socket seems to be fixed

2007-07-15 Thread Martin Steigerwald

Hi!

I configured KDEPrint to use

/var/run/cups/cups.sock:631

again and printed some images. Seems to work nicely.

So apparently this bug is fixed.

I am using:

shambala:~> echo "kdeprint cupsys cupsys-client libcupsys2 hpijs" |
xargs -n1 apt-show-versions
kdeprint/sid uptodate 4:3.5.7-2
cupsys/sid upgradeable from 1.2.7-4 to 1.2.11-3
cupsys-client/sid upgradeable from 1.2.7-4 to 1.2.11-3
libcupsys2/sid upgradeable from 1.2.7-4 to 1.2.11-3
hpijs/sid upgradeable from 2.6.10+1.6.10-3 to 2.6.10+1.6.10-4.1

Hmmm... seems there are some updates available.

Okay, I upgraded to

shambala:~> echo "kdeprint cupsys cupsys-client libcupsys2 hpijs
hpijs-ppds" | xargs -n1 apt-show-versions
kdeprint/sid uptodate 4:3.5.7-2
cupsys/sid uptodate 1.2.11-3
cupsys-client/sid uptodate 1.2.11-3
libcupsys2/sid uptodate 1.2.11-3
hpijs/sid uptodate 2.6.10+1.6.10-4.1
hpijs-ppds/sid uptodate 2.6.10+1.6.10-4.1

and printed another image.

Still works fine.

Thus I am closing my bug report. I did not use notfound tag, since
actually I do not know whether it is a new kdeprint or a new cups that
fixes the bug.

Regards,

Bug#381699: ; CUPS 1.2.7-4

2007-07-15 Thread richard
CUPS version 1.2.7-4 has not fixed, or improved, the problem described
in Bug#381699. Printing a test page with my hp PSC2210 results in many
sheets ejected from the printer, each with a small portion of the test
page printed on each sheet. While this is happening, the browser
continually reloads the localhost:631 view. Other than being unable to
print a CUPS test page, the printer works well.

Thanks.

"You grabbed my hand and we fell into it, like a daydream - or a fever."
This patch fixes a couple of issues with GCC 4.2 due to it being a bit

I don't question the use of PAM.

This is all about 'cupsdCallPamAuthHelper'. Which is not part of CUPS
proper, but an invention of Debian packaging in order to make up for
lost features and usability. These were lost by making CUPS on Debian
run as non-root (essentially forking CUPS for no good reason).

BTW, CUPS proper *does* work with PAM already...

logging out on its second and any further invocations:

--8<--
imap(elho): Info: Disconnected: Logged out
Main program terminated with exception:
Traceback (most recent call last):

File "threading.py", line 222, in wait

KeyboardInterrupt
--8<--

Without maxconnections set, ie. the default of 1, offlineimap runs
fine and the problem is kind of "reset" - the first run with
maxconnections = 2 after this runs fine again.

When trying maxconnections = 3 it already hung on its first invocation
(and the ones after) and took 2 SIGINTs to kill it.
When trying that another time now to verify, it hung on its first
invocation but not afterwards.
Further testing shows that it also sometimes works with
maxconnections = 2, though rarely.

I'm using ssh preauthtunnel on all accounts, not sure whether that
matters.

Bug#433202: Cpufrequtils conflicts with cpufreqd?

2007-07-15 Thread Cesare Leonardi

Package: cpufrequtils
Version: 002-5

Since cpufrequtils seems to be a subset of cpufreqd, and of each of them
main function's is to set the cpufreq governor that a cpu have to use
(and its options), shouldn't they conflict with each other?

As now the package's description is not very clear on what the package
do (i'll fill a bug for this), so it is easy to have a machine with both
cpufreqd and cpufrequtils installed at the same time (as i did). Nothing
bad happened, but i think this could create a somewhat confusing
configuration and some unexpected behaviours (what is the cpufreq
configuration that prevail?).

Cesare.

Well, we can't start it unconditionally. With my patch applied, could you
please add an "echo $start_nfs" before the if, and report the output? I'm
wondering if nfs-common refuses to start due to portmap, or if something else
is going on.

2007-07-15 Thread Yannick P.

In fact, no, I'm not sure...
For example Debian's man page of ssh must be newer than 1999 because it
seems there are references to 2006 year in "See also" section.

But for sshd man page:

Section AUTHENTIFICATION, end of the third paragraph:

OpenSSH's web site:
>a crypto-graphic message authentication code (hmac-md5, hmac-sha1,
>umac-64 or hmac-ripemd160).

Debian's man page:
>a crypto‐graphic message authentication code (hmac-sha1 or hmac-md5).

There are also other small differences.

Bug#432911: aptitude: localized package descriptions have problems, with character sets

Hi Jiří, hi Daniel,

I had the same problem: the localized package descriptions had question
marks instead of German umlauts in a non-UTF-8 terminal. It seems I've
found the culprit: there is a line with

export MM_CHARSET=ISO-8859-1

in my .bashrc, put in by language-env years ago. After unsetting
MM_CHARSET aptitude displayed the national characters just fine.

Hope this helps,

Bug#433203: Cpufrequtils package description

2007-07-15 Thread Cesare Leonardi

Package: cpufrequtils
Version: 002-5

Reading from the description of the package seems that it only install
two utilities that one has to invoke manually to make something. But
this package is a lot more "active" than this: in fact it starts the
ondemand cpufreq governor and creates an init scripts to start it on
every boot.

I think the description should be more clearer on the package behaviour.
Here is a proposal:
--
This package provide an interface to set and configure a cpufreq
governor on every boot. It is based on two utilities that can be used
standalone to set and monitor ther cpufreq state.

You need a CPUFreq driver loaded and a cpu that support some frequency
throttling mechanism like SpeedStep (Intel) or PowerNow (AMD).

no, cpufreqd does it dynamically, cpufrequtils statically and also
includes an utility to inspect the current state (cpufreq-info).

what's not clear about that?

the last one set (probably cpufreqd will prevail sooner or later as it
changes the limits/governor based on system stats)

It doesn't make sense to conflict with cpufreqd. As I see it these are
complementary tools and one may well have one of them or both (as I
have).

Bug#374956: gs-esp problem

2007-07-15 Thread smsms
Hi there,

please merge #374956 and #298249 from Cupsys into #431793 from gs-esp since the
Cupsys team was the only team that looked into the problem as of yet and Kenshi
Muto from Cupsys wrote in #298249 that the problem is most likely caused by
gs-esp (which is also my understanding of that problem).

If you can't merge them than they can be archieved since Cupsys is most likely
not the culprit.

Thx,

Do you get this error message when you add the file to the project or when
you start burning the CD ?

Ouuch, no it didn't. I really should have made sure that I had started
aptitude in the right terminal. :-(

I can just confirm Jiří's observations: the localized package
descriptions work fine in an UTF-8 terminal, but not in others.

Sorry for the noise,
Sven

Bug#388813: stardict: Fix build with GCC 4.2

2007-07-15 Thread Mark Brown
tag 388813 + patch
thanks

The enclosed patch fixes the build of stardict with GCC 4.2 (the
compiler is now more strict about enforcing visibility requirements for
static member functions). If desired I can prepare a NMU with this fix
in it?

Thanks.

I'm now using 1.2.11-3 from testing, and the model selection seems to be okay
now.

FYI, I disabled cupsdCallPamAuthHelper call in Debian cupsys 1.2.12-1
(and closed this bug), because Debian CUPS decided to use root privilege
again unlike Ubuntu.

Bug#429004: prismstumbler: FTBFS: /usr/include/linux/wireless.h:886: error: 'IFNAMSIZ' undeclared here (not in a function)

Hi,

doesn't this look like a bug in linux-libc-dev/linux-kernel-headers?
Adding an #include on "" before the one on
"" enables to go further in the build, but it still
fails, with:
| In file included from cards.c:12:
| /usr/include/linux/wireless.h:650: error: expected specifier-qualifier-list
before '__s32'
| [many occurrences]
| cards.c: In function 'find_wireless_cards':
| cards.c:71: error: 'struct iwreq' has no member named 'ifr_name'
| make: *** [cards.o] Error 1

Cheers,
