2007-12-06 Thread David Bremner
Package: memcached
Version: 1.2.2-1+bremner
Severity: wishlist

There is a new upstream version of memcached available. Upgrading to
this new version would resolve 441067, and would also contains the
important parts of the patches in for 446606 (although the latter
also contains suggested changes for the init scripts).

all the best,

I fully agree with you.

Yes, I observed that.

IMHO, you would definitely know better! :-) If you feel it is dpkg's
responsibility to handle this case, so be it, you can reassign it. I
trust that you would have attempted to reproduce what I tried in a
chroot, and confirmed it (I may have goofed up in my attempt).

If you are sure, I'd rather have you reassign it to dpkg, since the
having the maintainer reassigning the bug carries more authority, in
my opinion.

Thanks for the patient hearing! :-)

Bug#432564: Proposalto introduce compiler options passed from dpkg-buildpackage

2007-12-06 Thread Loïc Minier
On Thu, Dec 06, 2007, Steve Langasek wrote:

 build-python2.4, build-python2.5...

 With constructs like:

PYVERS := $(shell pyversions -vr debian/control 2>/dev/null)

build-%:
PYTHON=`which python$*` ./configure
...

build: $(PYVERS:%=build-%)

And it doesn't even conflict with implemeting build-arch; it just makes
 the test make moot.

glib2.0 has a very similar example for each of its flavors ("deb" and
 "udeb").

Bug#454691: Checked with previously working 2007-11-19 and 2007-12-05-2 and they fail

2007-12-06 Thread Daniel Dickinson
As Christian says it's probably a temporary error in testing. It is
relatively recent as the 2007-12-05-2 install earlier this evening worked,
but now it doesn't (tested after 2007-12-06-2 failed).

Also, I'd like to mention the reason I was testing a new install, which is
that on reboot lvm on crypt fails to load (the message was 'cannot
find /dev/sdb1'). sdb is the second logical disk on a Dell PERC 3/DCL (AMI
MegaRAID Elite 1600) hardware raid, and sdb1 is the partition with the lvm on
top of a crypt (lvm on sdb1_crypt, crypt on sdb1). This probably belongs
with the package that is responsible for loading lvm and/or crypt partitions.
I can't do more testing or give you more information (or file a proper
installation report) until I can install though.

I'd like to note that this partitioning scheme works for Etch, so this is a
regression.

Regards,

Daniel

I experience the same error as described in this bug. People mentioned that
there is a fix in the newer splix version for it, so if you could update the

Bug#454697: calamaris: Last version incorrectly introduced a translatable string

2007-12-06 Thread Christian Perrier
Package: calamaris
Severity: normal
Tags: patch l10n

A Default value has been incorrectly introduced as being translatable in
last version of the calamaris package, therefore breaking all translations
which means that the relevant template will be shown in English entirely.

The attached patch fixes this.

That is strange, because I do:

% dpkg -s libx11-dev
Package: libx11-dev
..
Architecture: amd64
Source: libx11
Version: 2:1.0.3-7

x11proto-kb-dev, xtrans-dev
Pre-Depends: x11-common (>= 1:7.0.0)
...

Are you talking about ubuntu or debian ? If your libx11-dev package
is really from debian and not from ubuntu please tell me which
architecture you are using and the version of your libx11-dev package.

Yeah, I did see that, but it didn't make any sense, since that's a
directory owned by the package (dpkg -c shows it in the Debian package,
and dpkg -L will show it as owned by the package).

Looks like piuparts wasn't at all at fault here -- I was too quick to
blame it! I apologize for that. I was assuming that it wasn't showing
the full contents of the directory, but apparently something stranger is
happening.

This is expected, since /etc/openafs/server still exists at this point
since it's in the openafs-fileserver package.

However, here, dpkg didn't remove /etc/openafs, even though it's empty and
part of the openafs-fileserver package. Nor did it warn that it wasn't
removing it because it wasn't empty.

It looks to me like you've uncovered a bug in dpkg. I don't see any way
that this should be fixed in the openafs-fileserver package; it's dpkg's
responsibility to remove directories that are part of a package that's
being purged, surely? But maybe I'm still misunderstanding something?

Bug#454698: calamaris: [INTL:fr] French debconf templates translation update

2007-12-06 Thread Christian Perrier
Package: calamaris
Version: N/A
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch l10n

Please find attached the french debconf templates update, proofread by the
debian-l10n-french mailing list contributors.

If you do not already use it, you might consider using the
"podebconf-report-po" utility, which helps warning translators about
changes when you modify some debconf templates in your packages.

The usual policy when using it is sending a warning to translators
when you plan to upload a version of your package with debconf
templates changes (even typo corrections). Then leave about one week
for them to update their files (several translation teams have a QA
process which requires time).

podebconf-report-po will take care of sending the translators the
needed material as well as getting the translators adresses from the
PO files. All you have to do is just using the utility..:-)

Example use (from your package build tree):

$ podebconf-report-po

This will go through debian/po/*.po files, find those needing an
update, extract the translators data from these files and prepare a
mail to send to these translators (you can also use the
"--languageteam" switch to also mail the mail addresses listed in
"Language-Team" field).

You can also use this utility to request for new translations:

$ podebconf-report-po --call

This will send a mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with all the
needed information and material for new translators to add new
languages to your supported languages.

If you apply this policy, please forget about these remarks, of
courseThis message is generic..:-)

Unfortunately, according to my understanding of the piuparts logs, the
directory may be empty, yet it is not removed.

Hmh, with proprietary nvidia driver we can't say say anything.
Basically, yes, it could be driver, but that doesn't answer why
gnome-terminal isn't affected :)

That would be one way to do it without modifying debconf. You could also
get rid of the "eth0: " prefix if you wanted to by using Choices-C.

Although while all these controls and detail can be nice, I'd generally
prefer that d-i just figured out which nic has link and a dhcp server

Unfortunately, piuparts logs are almost unreadable, containing a bunch of
debugging information that isn't very useful and not containing the key
information that would be useful, which is largely why I don't try to use
it. I tried for a while and gave up because of that problem. I know
people are actively working on it; hopefully it will get better.

>/etc/openafs owned by: openafs-client, openafs-fileserver

This is a directory shipped with the package, so it will be automatically
removed when it's empty:

windlord:~/tmp> dpkg -c openafs-fileserver_1.4.5.dfsg1-1_i386.deb | grep /etc
drwxr-xr-x root/root 0 2007-11-11 16:23 ./etc/

drwxr-xr-x root/root 0 2007-11-11 16:23 ./etc/init.d/
-rwxr-xr-x root/root 3329 2007-11-11 16:14 ./etc/init.d/openafs-fileserver

This therefore isn't the real problem.

What file is left behind in /etc/openafs on your system that's preventing
it from being removed? I'm happy to fix this if I know what file is
keeping it from being removed, but just removing /etc/openafs isn't a
valid solution. It's not clear from this bug report whether the problem
is even with openafs-fileserver or with openafs-client.

(I'll try to take a look at this myself if you don't have this information
available, but this is the sort of information that piuparts really should
be providing for it to be useful.)

Hi!

I have been analyzing packages for the piuparts test, and have
observed that openafs-fileserver fails the piuparts because it doesn't purge
some files.

The gzipped log of the piuparts run for openafs-fileserver is

seems to let the following files remain unremoved:

that in case openafs-client is not removed before openafs-fileserver,

Any debugging I can do?

Ray, Debian is not Slashdot. I urge you to actually read the paper
you are referring to before making such claims. A chosen-prefix attack
certainly does *not* allow to modify an executable "to have a desired
MD5 checksum".

Chosen-prefix attacks do allow to build two different packages
with the same checksum. But until proven otherwise that requires the
complicity of the Debian maintainer, who is trusted anyway, so you
will need to provide a realistic attack scenario in order for your
bug report to be considered seriously.

Is there any chance that you can try reproducing that on unstable or,
even better, with the version of samba in experimental ?

That would make a very interesting and complete report to make
upstream if you could.

Thanks anyway for the very detailed report. I don't know if any of the
team members will have time to go through it but, at first glance, it
deserves to be reported upstream.

(hint: not much value added in this post, but it seems worth a thread
as followup..:-))

Apart from a probably temporary problem in testing that should be
investigated and probably reassigned to the right package, I wonder
whether we would do something in D-I (apt-setup ?) to intercept such

Apart from that, I don't really understand the urgency of riding big
horses at the speed of light reporting an RC bug against part of our
architecture only because an (sorry for being rude) obscure proof of
concept just got unveiled.

I don't think that ringing the trumpets of Apocalypse is exactly the
best way to work on the issue.

Please call me wrong as long as you want but I'd really like to see
people I trust in this project bring some advice on that issue.

Bug#454690: sl-modem-source: Modules don't load

2007-12-06 Thread Nick
Package: sl-modem-source
Version: 2.9.9d+e-pre2-10
Severity: important

I built the package sl-modem-modules-2.6.22-3-686 using module-assistant.
It created these modules:

   # ls /lib/modules/2.6.22-3-686/misc/
   slamr.ko slusb.ko ungrab-winmodem.ko

Shouldn't they (one at least) get loaded into the kernel? lsmod shows
none of them, and my attempts to load them myself fail, e.g.

   # modprobe slamr
   FATAL: Module ungrab_winmodem not found.
   FATAL: Module slamr not found.

sl-modem-daemon 2.9.9d+e-pre2-1 is installed. On attempting to use
the modem, syslog shows 'Failed (NO CARRIER)'.

Bug#454623: squirrelmail: attached PDFs are unreadable to many recipients

2007-12-06 Thread David Luyer
Further, the solution (to the Firefox issue) in case anyone comes to this
page by searching: Remove (or rename, or edit) Firefox's mimeTypes.rdf in
your profile directory.

(if you choose to edit it, it's in XML, so be sure to maintain correct
XML syntax when deleting the incorrect entry.)

Please close this bug as it is not a squirrelmail issue.

David.

Bug#454689: packages.debian.org: Switch from gnuab.org to debian-ports.org

2007-12-06 Thread Guillem Jover
Package: www.debian.org
Severity: normal

Hi,

Last weekend [0] the main server for the kfreebsd-* and armel ports
was switched from gnuab.org to debian-ports.org. The new server should
behave better on the hardware and connectivity fronts.

Attached is a patch against latest git master. I've not tested it so
please review. Initially I called the repo 'ports' but changed to
'debports' to avoid confusion with the www.debian.org/ports stuff.

regards,
guillem

Bug#454623: squirrelmail: attached PDFs are unreadable to many recipients

2007-12-06 Thread David Luyer
It turns out my "fix" is not a fix at all. Uploading PDFs works on the
computer I tested the fix on, and not on the computer I first tried it on,
regardless of this change.

I see the mime type which squirrelmail uses comes from $_FILES which is
set by the uploading browser. Why the same version of Firefox on the
same version of OS X has an issue on one system but not another nearly
identical system, I don't know (one uploads PDFs as application/pdf and
the other as text/html, confirmed via a test form).

David.

Bug#454688: python-package-should-be-section-python produces false positives

Hi

If there is a documentation package for python, it is usually called
python-foo-doc. However lintian now reports this as
python-package-should-be-section-python, but I think it should be in
section doc. Attached patch changes test behavior to work this way.

Bug#454678: r-base-core: Crash when calling edit.matrix with edit.row.names = TRUE when there are no rownames

2007-12-06 Thread Dirk Eddelbuettel

Ben,

Thanks for the bug report. I am off two minds about it as discussed below.
But as it does indeed create a crash / segfault, I am passing this on to the
R bug tracker. A suggested two-line patch is below; I tested the patch
against a 'vanilla' 2.6.1 source tree.

On 6 December 2007 at 19:32, Ben Goodrich wrote:

I can confirm that it crashes 2.6.0 and 2.6.1. I also spent the last little
while building a (non-stripped) debug version that reveals:

Now, two comments.

Firstly, we all prefer if R would not crash. So this may need some fixing.

Secondly, I think you are rather close to bordering on user error. As your
snippet shows, you need to invoke args on the non-exported edit.matrix to
learn about the edit.row.names argument. Moreover, you also know full well
from looking at this that this will only be true when there actually are
names set --- and you then proceed to call it when there are none. Guess
what: it blows up.

So we could fix this in a number of places. Here is one which I tested; R
Core may opt to apply this, or a better version, or to drop the issue:

Hi,

A user said update-manager showed messages in English ("This can be
caused by unofficial package sources ...") during upgrade even all
other messages were translated and ja.po was 100% translated.

I looked into the source and found
debian/patches/02_replace_dist_upgrade.diff replaced the messages.

Well, could you add these new messages to templates.pot and update po
files with using dummy template or other solution?

Bug#415639: modified scripts and added get_lock_path option

2007-12-06 Thread Andres Mejia
Attached is a simple patch that uses an option to get the path
specified for the log file and use it with the init script. I've also
modified the script slightly to specify the variable USER as 'root' in
case it's not specified. Also, the init script options to stop debpool
will stop it by debpool's name. Stopping it by the executable path
failed since debpool would be running through perl. I've also set the
logfile to go to /var/log/debpool.log to make it system accessible and
to take advantage of logrotate.

Bug#454684: no WEP connection possible with prism2_usb

2007-12-06 Thread Marek Straka

Package: linux-wlan-ng
Version: 0.2.8+svn1839+dfsg-1
Severity: normal

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

I have tried to setup prism2_usb with WEP support as described on:
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Prism2_USB_on_Gentoo
Especially regarding WEP:
"To enable WEP, you have to create a dedicated configuration file for the network you are going to
connect to. First, copy /etc/conf.d/wlancfg-DEFAULT to /etc/conf.d/wlancfg-mynet, where NetworkName
is the name of the network."

But whenever (after there is edited /etc/wlan/wlancfg-mynet) and in /etc/wlan/wlan.conf is added in
the parameter SSID_wlan0="mynet", there is no possibility to start this wlan interface with
"wlanctl-ng wlan0 lnxreq_ifstate ifstate=enable" There is always answer:

  ifstate=enable
  resultcode=implementation_failure

I have tried it with "opensystem" and also with "sharedkey" but with no success.

With not encrypted connection (no WEP), it has worked everything fine.

Bug#454685: sendmail-base -- Doesn't purge all files after piuparts Install+Upgrade+Purge test

Package: sendmail-base
Version: 8.14.2-1

Hi!

I have been analyzing packages for the piuparts test, and have
observed that sendmail-base fails the piuparts because it doesn't purge
some files.

The gzipped log of the piuparts run for sendmail-base is
attached. The problem is that the process

Install Etch sendmail-base -> upgrade to sid -> purge

seems to let the following files remain unremoved:

   /etc/logcheck/violations.ignore.d owned by: sendmail-base
   /etc/logcheck/violations.ignore.d/sendmail owned by: sendmail-base
   /etc/logrotate.d/sendmail owned by: sendmail-base
   /usr/share/doc/sendmailnot owned

WARNING: Though you will know this, let me reiterate the point that
/etc/logcheck is a directory owned by many packages. Please remove
those directories only if they are empty.

Please consider fixing this bug, as it is a Lenny release
recommendation [1].

Thanks.

Hi Tormod, of course, I'm interested on getting help with xscreensaver,
I've been working on it but very slow because of my studies.

No, I'm the only maintainer right now.

Simple diffs, or better in a git/svn (I haven't work with any of these
so I'm ok with learning any of this two).
Or do it your own way? Would you like to

It's not necessary, I believe this could be kept in wiki.d.o easily. :-)

I used dpatch just because was the simplest and fastest way to
implement, I'm ok with changing the patch system if is easier for you.
00_maindiffwithorig.patch is the easier way to migrate from the old way
to maintain xscreensaver.

It's not autogenerated, should be shipped in `debian/` and copied at
build time but I haven't done this (don't now yet why, maybe I've
forgotten this), anyway I didn't used this in the last release (5.04-1).

This file is shipped with the original tarball.

They are patched and used again for icons.

This is because of the `6x`. Why? Some mans overwrites the manpages of
some games.

This is because makes a new entry in the menues, but this is ok.

Bug#454614: Icon is not displayed properly

2007-12-06 Thread John Stamp
Thanks for letting me know. I tried with KDE 3.5.8 and Xfce 4.4.1,
and I see no problem with the icon. What desktop environment are you
using?

The key
  Icon=lastfm
should check for the lastfm icons in the hicolor icon theme. They are
included in the Debian and Ubuntu packages, so I wonder why you see
no icon.

As for the other changes to the .desktop file:

I removed the deprecated Encoding key. Thanks for pointing that out!
It will appear in the next upload which will arrive after upstream
releases 1.4.0.

The desktop specification lets the Exec key point to the full path or
just the executable name, so I don't see a problem there. Is there a
reason why you prefer the latter?

Bug#389876: NMU of a new version of yaz

2007-12-06 Thread Vincent Danjean
  Hi,

I heard nothing since my previous mail (copy at the end of this one).
So I go ahead.
A new version of yaz has just been packaged and uploaded to unstable
(yet again as an NMU by myself, however this NMU is quite intrusive).
The packaging is done in a git repo in the collab-maint alioth project.
If Eric Schwartz does not manifest itself, I will co-maintain the yaz
package with MJ Ray who also express interest in this package.

MIA team: since my previous mail, there is now an entry in the MIA
database about Eric. Do I need to do something other ? Or should I only
wait until you tell me (after you try to join Eric) that I can (or cannot)
take over this package ?

  Best regards
Vincent

I did get the same backgrace in Xorg.0.log with the live CD as with a
regular boot of the hard drive. I also have an ATI Mobility Radeon
9600 M10 running in an IBM ThinkPad T42.

It's entirely possible the bug is in Mesa instead of xscreensaver --
it's just that I haven't been able to reproduce it with just standard
GL apps (although it might be because none are running full screen
like xscreensaver).

So it's most probably a missing atlas dependency. The atlas packages are
quite broken unfortunately. Also the python-numpy used to build
python-scipy 0.6.0-4 is quite broken too. We just fixed python-numpy
couple of hours ago, so when it hits unstable, we'll try to reproduce
and fix this bug too.

Bug#454678: r-base-core: Crash when calling edit.matrix with edit.row.names = TRUE when there are no rownames

2007-12-06 Thread Ben Goodrich
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Package: r-base-core
Version: 2.6.1-1
Severity: important

Hi Dirk,

My strong hunch is that this bug should just be forwarded upstream but
it might have something to do with libc6 on Debian. To reproduce it, do

args(utils:::edit.matrix)
mat <- matrix(rnorm(30), nrow = 10, ncol = 3)
edit(mat, edit.row.names = TRUE) #crash

The only other version of R I can get my hands on at the moment (2.5.1,
not Debian) does not crash but throws an uninformative error. This crash
also occurs when calling fix(), which calls edit(). It does not occur if
the matrix being edited has rownames already. A little gdb output is
pasted below. -- Thanks, Ben

Thanks for the bug report. We are working on exactly this problem,
and it seems we finally made a progress, python-numpy got built on many
architectures now:

http://buildd.debian.org/pkg.cgi?pkg=python-numpy

Once python-numpy gets to unstable on most of the architectures, we'll
fix the rest.

I will apply the last two points to the upstream securetty.

For the first point, I don't think it can be applied upstream (shadow
could be run on a old kernel).

What I don't know is whether it would be really unrealistic to run a
Debian system with a system supporting devfs.

The only kernel requirement I know is from the glibc, but I think the libc
still allows a 2.6.12 Linux kernel, which supports devfs.
(Is this right?)

If this is the case, I would prefer to just keep the deprecated tty, but
adding a note.

Are there other reason which would make devfs support impossible when the
login package is installed?

Best Regards,

This is something that's really off-topic to (read: over the heads of) the
d-boot list/team and should be taken to the kernel developers at
[EMAIL PROTECTED], CC: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If they feel your suggestion are correct, that would be perfect, but us
lowly installer developers basically just have to deal with whatever the
kernel gives us :-P

hi,

today i installed a sid-chroot on my (i386) notebook with a intel GPU,

after all a xorg problem? - on my amd64 machine, which runs the

rather than directly adding to `load-path', to ensure package

Bug#447231: debian-policy: New Python policy missing

Are these the policies that are currently in use?

This seems more like a HOWTO document, and relies heavily on
using debhelper. The language is not what I would expect of a normative
document; it is fine for what it appears to be, a user guide.

In general, the policy should define interfaces and
requirements, and leave implementation details to the user; which is
 not the case here.

This document is slightly better, but there is no indication
that this has been accepted by the Debian Python crowd. Has there been
a ratification of this document by folks who use python?

> are both much more uptodate than
> http://www.debian.org/doc/packaging-manuals/python-policy/

Umm, I am not sure where that document comes from, but it
certainly does not seem to be part of the Debian technical policy, so I
am not sure what the relevance is here.

Perhaps the Python Debian community should come to a consensus,
update the page on http://www.debian.org/doc/packaging-manuals/, and
then move to have whatever the result is be added to the
 technical policy?

Understood. Note that this implementation doesn't *require* the
module, it just takes advantage of it if its available. And, if other
non-ACPI platforms begin populating the 'slot' sysfs field in the
future, the installer would automatically work with it.

In fact, as to Otavio's point, it probably makes sense to do the
module loading outside of hw-detect (e.g. his acpi-support-udeb
suggestion), and just let hw-detect use the interface if its
available.

> - the "slot" indication is not translatable in the current patch

I didn't think to make this translatable, but yes, it should be.

> - the descriptions are already quite long and this will truncate some of
> them even more than they already are

Yeah, I expected someone would point this out. There are possible
hacks like filtering out redundant words/phrases like "Ethernet
Controller", but I think what we really need is to get out of the
single-line description, more on this below.

> - I'm not sure that as a user it would be clear to me what exactly a Slot
> is in this context

I could change this to "PCI Slot" or "PCI Card Slot", and would even
prefer it, but that will of course take more space.

> - looking at your screenshot it does not seem to add all that much
> identification as there are still several NICs with identical slots

The snapshot was taken from a machine w/ dual-port cards installed, so
it is correct for both nics to claim the same slot. This case does
leave some ambiguity, but much less ambiguity than before.

> - it seems only a partial solution as not all NICs will be get a slot
> identifier

Again, it decreases ambiguity. In my screenshot, you can see that two
nics aren't in slots because they are built into the system board. You
don't know which one is which, but in a system with 20 nics, it
certainly saves you some time finding the right one. (And 20 NICs
really isn't a contrived example, but is of course a small minority of
Debian users).

> - I'm not sure that it makes sense to print slot if it's the only
> identification

Can you restate this one - I didn't really follow it.

> We've had other requests to provide additional identification of NICs (see

> some way to display the MAC address, possibly by allowing to switch between

That would help some users, but I'd like to see us find a more general
way to display all the available information that a user might use for
identification. And I expect a separate display, or "view" for each
may prove not to scale.

I do like the genearl principle of Geert's proposal:

 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=450605#31

With the exception that I don't like splitting the option list from
the selection widget (and as Bastian points out, its not possible
anyway).

Some brainstorming:
 * Modify cdebconf to permit per-option descriptions, and use those
descriptions to provide details about each nic. Frontends could
use this to implement a "more info" button, or just include the
   description text in-line.
 * Modify cdebconf to support multi-line choice fields. Make each
interface choice be a multi-lined option that includes things like
   vendor, model, mac, slot.
 * Change the flow from "select iface" -> "configure iface" to:
 "select iface"
   v
"display info about iface & confirm"
   v
   "configure iface"
This is probably the only one possible w/ today's cdebconf, but its
   pretty non-intuitive.

Then why in the world are you using "build-%" if you don't support
build-arch? What other values of '%' are you using?

WRT policy standardization, that sounds like a fairly pathological use of
wildcards, IMHO.

IOW: you'd be fine with a policy requirement that is totally useless and
isn't enforced in practice?

What would be the point of that? I advocate requiring debian/rules to be a
makefile so that we *can* depend on make behavior.

No, currently there is no such package. I could provide one though - you'd
have to install a new binary package as well in this case, which might
influence the part causing the segfault though...

If you have some knowledge about building Debian source package you can
download it, remove any parts that strip binaries (dh_strip in debian/rules
and possibly any "install -s" and such in the upstream makefiles) and rebuild
the package yourself.

Cheers,
Sebastian

i would think changing the recommends to a suggests would be the most
appropriate thing here. maybe also an "enhances" field.

that doesn't really change the nature of the bug report, only
implementation for other projects wishing to use ltspfsd.

i don't see a reason why we should split it really.

the ltspfsd package is quite small, so i wouldn't justify making an arch
all package on those grounds.

the udev scripts are essentially harmless now, even if there are some
cases where they wouldn't do anything useful.

i definitely don't see a need for splitting ltspfsd into three packages,
and don't support the idea of splitting out ltspfsd-core.

i'd be open to hearing more on the matter, particularly use cases where
the current layout doesn't work.

Bug#396928: allow setting of "From:" address in /etc/default/cron

2007-12-06 Thread Steve Lane
Package: cron
Version: 3.0pl1-100
Followup-For: Bug #396928

I am wondering about the status of this bug.

The original request, by the original submitter, Darren Dittrich, was
that cron acquire default options from /etc/default/cron, in the standard
Debian way. My suggestion was that one of these options be the "From:"
address cron uses to send messages. Setting this is useful regardless
of which MTA one is using (i.e. this is *not* specifically a problem
with ssmtp, or any other MTA).

You stated that "this will be added in the next release", which
I am running (and have been for nearly a year), but there is no
/etc/default/cron.

Being able to control cron's "From:" address would be *hugely* useful
in our environment; doubtless this is true for at least one other person
(Michelle Konzack, who also added to this bug). In addition, there are
obviously other things that would be good to be able to configure for
cron in /etc/default/cron.

Again, *independent* of anything *any* MTA does, configuring cron's
"From:" line is useful. /etc/default/cron is the obvious mechanism for
doing this.

Please provide a status update.

Thanks very much for your efforts,

Bug#454666: MD5 signatures provide no security

2007-12-06 Thread bear
Package: dpkg
Version: 1.13.25
Severity: critical

Note: reported against the current version of dpkg,
but applies equally to all versions up to the present
time.

MD5 checksums are not secure. A recently discovered
mathematical technique allows *ANY* document containing a
few attacker-chosen "random" blocks to have any chosen MD5
checksum. The paper is titled "Vulnerability of software
integrity and code signing applications to chosen-prefix
collisions for MD5" by Arjen Lenstra and Benne de Weger,
Bell Laboratories. Full text is available online.[1]

In particular, it is now computationally feasible for
a single attacker with a desktop machine to modify any
executable of his or her choosing to have any desired
MD5 checksum.

Exploitation of this flaw would allow an attacker to
substitute arbitrary code for any legitimate Debian package
using a "man in the middle" attack undetected whenever a
user is installing new software, or to put up a debian
mirror site or repository containing arbitrary code
disguised as legitimate Debian software and having the same
checksums.

Err, what?

I wasn't able to reproduce the problem later using the same torrent. It
happened a few seconds after starting so it may have been due to
something received on the network which is now different. I was trying
0.91 again, even.

Bug#454668: ITP: ttf-sil-zaghawa-beria -- font for Zaghawa Beria (script used in western Sudan and eastern Chad)

2007-12-06 Thread Nicolas Spalinger
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
X-Debbugs-CC: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

* Package name: ttf-sil-zaghawa-beria
  Version : 1.1
  Upstream Author : Seonil Yun
* URL : http://scripts.sil.org/ZaghawaBeria_Home
* License : Open Font License
Description : font for Zaghawa Beria (script used in western Sudan
and eastern Chad)

Description:

This alphabet is built around a sampling of the markings on livestock
(especially camels) within the Zaghawa Beria language region of
western Sudan and eastern Chad. It is an idea that has its origins in
the work of a Sudanese schoolteacher, who developed the first version
of this over 25 years ago. The script has since been better adapted
to the Zaghawa Beria language by Siddik Adam Issa, and he has found a
great enthusiasm by the people for what he has put together.

Note that this font is not encoded according to The Unicode Standard,
as the Zaghawa Beria script has not yet been accepted into the
standard.

Bug#454665: initramfs-tools: busybox depends should include busybox-static

2007-12-06 Thread Steve Lane
Package: initramfs-tools
Version: 0.90a
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

Attempting to install busybox-static when initramfs-tools is installed
results in an uninstall of initramfs-tools, and, consequently, the
Debian kernel package.

Obviously busybox-static (vs. busybox) is not normally needed, but,
again obviously, it is precisely when things (i.e. dynamic libraries)
are broken that it *is* needed (I've been there - it's not pretty). It is
these (potential) circumstances that justify the severity of this bug.

Fortunately, it is super easy to fix. I've installed my own copy of
initramfs-tools on a test machine, where the *only* change is to the
"Depends" line in the control file, from:

Depends: klibc-utils (>= 1.4.34-1), busybox (>= 1:1.01-3) | busybox-initramfs,
cpio, module-init-tools, udev (>= 0.086-1)

to:

Depends: klibc-utils (>= 1.4.34-1), busybox (>= 1:1.01-3) | busybox-static (>=
1:1.01-3), cpio, module-init-tools, udev (>= 0.086-1)

(Note that the busybox-initramfs package is not available.)

I don't know if this qualifies as a "patch" or not, but there it is.
It works great - I was able to install busybox-static (which removes
busybox) with no problem.

Note that this issue relates to a bug filed against busybox-static
(#375568), but it appears to be more properly filed against
initramfs-tools (especialy since #375568 was filed nearly a year and a
half ago and, as with all the busybox and busybox-static bugs, nothing
seems to be happening with them).

Hopefully this can happen ASAP, since it's very easy, and only makes
good things happen!

Thanks very much,

Indeed,
when I build 1.3 package from experimental I has ENABLE_RADIUS_ACC=true
as env var at my work station.
I'm market the bug as found at 1.3.

BTW regarding to your previous mail; I'm using postgresql and Radius
accounting with 1.2 and there is no problem, I did'nt try using it with
Diameter.

I have commit access at pkg-voip svn if you're busy I can add the proper
patch there.

Bug#368560: mesa: material under SGI Free Software License B is not DFSG-free

2007-12-06 Thread Sylvestre Ledru
Hello,

Is there any progress on this issue ?
I packaged JOGL for Debian and would like to see it in Debian.
However, JOGL has the same files as mesa (translated to Java) under the
same license (SGI free license B).
Does anyone tried to contact the upstream ?

Cheers,
Sylvestre

Right; please strike "new" in my sentence; the "new" part is to

Bug#454663: DM-List nowhere publically available

Hi,

I guess a list of the current debian maintainers should be accessible somewhere
in the Web. What about a link to a current list hosten on db.debian.org?
db.debian.org is the first point where I search for a DD - so why not link a
list there?

Thanks and regards,

Mario

Bug#434469: numbers show up as "#######"

2007-12-06 Thread jidanni
Can you please tell upstream that the following is absolutely bananas. Thanks.
Just show as much as you can. The user will notice it is cut
off. Imagine web pages where if something doesn't fit the browser, it
becomes all # ! What if lines that went off the end of the Linux
console all became totally ? What were talking about here is a
basic violation of computing standards.

Begin bananas:

If the content of the cell is too large for the size of the cell, the
entry may span over the edge of the cell into the empty cells to the
right. If the cell is a number, the cell grid area may display hash
marks (##) to indicate the cell has content which is too large to
display in the given cell width.

A cell may display a series of hash marks (##). This indicates
that the result is too wide to display in the cell given the current
font setting and the current column width. When this occurs, the value
in the cell can be seen in two ways. If the cell is selected, the
value will appear in the data entry area (to the right of the equals
button directly above the cell grid). Alternatively, the column
containing the cell can be widened until the data contents become
visible.

If I read the xserver code correctly, there is a potential null-pointer de-ref
that could cause this. Is this what you're thinking of Ron?

In XkbIndicatorsToUpdate (./xkb/xkbLEDs.c:56) the call to XkbFindSrvLedInfo
can potentially return NULL, which is not an uncommon cause for a SEGV.
