Bug#456634: gpsd: Translated NMEA output does not include a GSA sentence
Package: gpsd Version: 2.34.dfsg-6 Severity: normal When the 'raw' output is translated NMEA data, such as from my Garmin 60CSx via a USB connection, gpsd does not produce any 'GSA' sentences in the output. The GSA sentence contains information somewhat similar to the 'q' command, so this is hopefully not too difficult to achieve. The GSA sentences are used extensively by gpsdrive to evaluate whether the unit has a 3D or 2D fix. I have also filed bug #456149 against gpsdrive earlier in relation to this problem. The GSA sentences themselves seem to provide useful information which is not straightforwardly available in the other NMEA output, so it would be useful to provide this if it is not too complicated. In case it's usefule here's some of the NMEA output from gpsd, showing the lack of GSA sentences: m GPSD,M=3 q GPSD,Q=11 1.20 0.00 0.56 0.56 1.33 q GPSD,Q=11 1.20 0.00 0.56 0.56 1.33 q GPSD,Q=11 1.20 0.00 0.56 0.56 1.33 r GPSD,R=1 $GPGSV,3,1,11,16,08,118,15,08,33,235,24,10,07,228,00,23,27,007,17*79 $GPGSV,3,2,11,19,57,067,22,03,45,116,16,28,11,290,38,11,02,019,32*71 $GPGSV,3,3,11,13,59,335,17,27,58,221,14,25,76,193,20*47 $GPGGA,063755,4106.5418,S,17452.2880,E,1,11,,90.8,M,16.836,M,,*44 $GPRMC,063755,A,4106.5418,S,17452.2880,E,0.5443,340.630,171207,,*38 $GPGSV,3,1,11,16,08,118,15,08,33,235,24,10,07,228,00,23,27,007,17*79 $GPGSV,3,2,11,19,57,067,22,03,45,116,16,28,11,290,38,11,02,019,33*70 $GPGSV,3,3,11,13,59,335,17,27,58,221,14,25,76,193,20*47 $GPGGA,063756,4106.5415,S,17452.2882,E,1,11,,90.5,M,16.836,M,,*45 $GPRMC,063756,A,4106.5415,S,17452.2882,E,1.0691,33.550,171207,,*0F $GPGSV,3,1,11,16,08,118,15,08,33,235,24,10,07,228,00,23,27,007,18*76 $GPGSV,3,2,11,19,57,067,22,03,45,116,16,28,11,290,38,11,02,019,33*70 $GPGSV,3,3,11,13,59,335,17,27,58,221,14,25,76,193,20*47 $GPGGA,063757,4106.5411,S,17452.2881,E,1,11,,90.8,M,16.836,M,,*4E $GPRMC,063757,A,4106.5411,S,17452.2881,E,0.7581,20.680,171207,,*01 $GPGSV,3,1,11,16,08,118,14,08,33,235,24,10,07,228,00,23,27,007,18*77 $GPGSV,3,2,11,19,57,067,22,03,45,116,16,28,11,290,38,11,02,019,33*70 $GPGSV,3,3,11,13,59,335,17,27,58,221,14,25,76,193,20*47 $GPGGA,063758,4106.5407,S,17452.2882,E,1,11,,90.9,M,16.836,M,,*44 $GPRMC,063758,A,4106.5407,S,17452.2882,E,0.9719,15.300,171207,,*0C r GPSD,R=0 Regards, Andrew McMillan. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (990, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.24-rc5-hippy (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_NZ.UTF8, LC_CTYPE=POSIX (charmap=ANSI_X3.4-1968) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages gpsd depends on: ii debconf [debconf-2.0]1.5.17 Debian configuration management sy ii libc62.7-4 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libdbus-1-3 1.1.2-1 simple interprocess messaging syst ii libgps16 2.34.dfsg-6 C library for communicating with G ii lsb-base 3.1-24 Linux Standard Base 3.1 init scrip ii netbase 4.30Basic TCP/IP networking system ii python 2.4.4-6 An interactive high-level object-o Versions of packages gpsd recommends: ii gpsd-clients 2.34.dfsg-6 Clients for the GPS daemon -- debconf information excluded -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#456632: automake: creates a readonly directory and then tries to modify it
Package: automake Version: 1:1.10+nogfdl-1 Severity: important The basic problem is that "make distcheck" fails. I believe I can see why, though I am not certain. The .texi.info implicit make rule creates a backup directory within the source directory. However, the implementation of "make distcheck" unpacks the source distribution and then makes the directories read-only before performing the build. Since you cannot create a subdirectory in a read-only directory, "make installcheck" always fails at the point it tries to build the info file. Here is the transcript: chmod -R a-w CSSC-1.0.2-CVS; chmod a+w CSSC-1.0.2-CVS mkdir CSSC-1.0.2-CVS/_build mkdir CSSC-1.0.2-CVS/_inst chmod a-w CSSC-1.0.2-CVS dc_install_base=`CDPATH="${ZSH_VERSION+.}:" && cd CSSC-1.0.2-CVS/_inst && pwd | sed -e 's,^[^:\\/]:[\\/],/,'` \ && dc_destdir="${TMPDIR-/tmp}/am-dc-$$/" \ && cd CSSC-1.0.2-CVS/_build \ && ../configure --srcdir=.. --prefix="$dc_install_base" \ \ && make \ && make dvi \ && make check \ && make install \ && make installcheck \ && make uninstall \ && make distuninstallcheck_dir="$dc_install_base" \ distuninstallcheck \ && chmod -R a-w "$dc_install_base" \ && ({ \ (cd ../.. && umask 077 && mkdir "$dc_destdir") \ && make DESTDIR="$dc_destdir" install \ && make DESTDIR="$dc_destdir" uninstall \ && make DESTDIR="$dc_destdir" \ distuninstallcheck_dir="$dc_destdir" distuninstallcheck; \ } || { rm -rf "$dc_destdir"; exit 1; }) \ && rm -rf "$dc_destdir" \ && make dist \ && rm -rf CSSC-1.0.2-CVS.tar.gz \ && make distcleancheck checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c checking whether build environment is sane... yes checking for a thread-safe mkdir -p... /bin/mkdir -p checking for gawk... gawk checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... yes checking if binary file support should be disabled... no WARNING WARNING This was assumed because you did not specify either WARNING --enable-binary or --disable-binary. Bug#456631: Ratpoison command-line locks up X server
Package: ratpoison Version: 1.4.2-1 Severity: serious Hi, I'm not sure if this is a ratpoison bug or an X server bug (or both?). After upgrading to the latest version of the X server, the ratpoison command-line (C-t :) will lock up the X server after you hit Enter. The only way to regain control is to 'Ctrl-Alt-SysRq r' to force kernel control of keyboard/mouse, then 'Ctrl-Alt-SysRq k' to kill the X server forcefully. The other C-t commands work properly, though, which is strange. Trying to quit ratpoison by using C-t :quit will hang the X server, but manually killing ratpoison (kill $pid) will gracefully exit the X server. Bug#438179: Processed: destruction of round-robin functionality is fucking up our mirrors and making Debian suck for many people, hence fixing this is a release-critical "wish"
On Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 12:07:04AM +0100, Josip Rodin wrote: > FWIW, the last reading is: > * villa 5.33 MB/s > * lobos 4.92 MB/s > * steffani 14.58 MB/s The original was: > * villa 4.29 MB/s > * lobos 3.91 MB/s > * steffani 14.86 MB/s Interesting that it got somewhat more balanced. For reference, the formulas are: A = 6l - 3v B = s - 2l + v C + F = 3v - 3l D = E = 0 Which gives: A = 13.53 MB/s(up from 10.59 MB/s) B = 10.07 MB/s(down from 11.33 MB/s) C + F = 1.23 MB/s(up from 1.14 MB/s) A is "strict round-robin", so we expect it to increase at the expense of the other classes the more people use glibc 2.7-4. The increase in C+F is either indicative of natural variations in source addresses using security.d.o, or some other mechanism we haven't considered. > Anyway, in light of all this, please comment again on those old conclusions: I think I'll leave that 'til the current glibc makes it into testing, and we see if the change in usage is along the lines of what we'd expect. It'd be really helpful if we could get some logs from the above hosts on what IPs are accessing each host. Just the first byte of the IP address, and a number of connections (or bandwidth usage) would be enough. If it were possible, (temporarily) adding a securty.d.o mirror in the 0.0.0.0 - 127.255.255.255 range would be helpful -- that'd give the breakdown as: A: 000.000.000.000-127.255.255.255: new-host B: 128.000.000.000-191.255.255.255: steffani C: 192.000.000.000-255.255.255.255: villa and/or lobos D: [hosts not using rule9]: RR: new-host, steffani, villa, lobos which would provide a really good cross-check that this is behaving as we'd expect. In that case, based on the numbers above, the relative loads would be expected to be: new-host: 13.53 MB/s(up from 0.0 MB/s) steffani: 10.07 MB/s(down from 14.58 MB/s) villa+lobos: 1.23 MB/s(down from 10.25 MB/s combined) (The above allocates bandwidth due to machines not using rule9 to new-host, instead of distributing them amongst all four hosts) Obviously finding a host that can deal with 13.53 MB/s of sustained traffic with a useful IP address to temporarily test this behaviour might be difficult. :) > > - the understanding of the issue we've got so far implies that this > > would only cause fairly minor load balancing problems for the current > > Debian hosts > This disparity doesn't classify as a minor load balancing problem when we > see one "third" of a rotation doing more than twice as much as other two > "thirds". Well, that's expected in some cases; the real refutation is that (assuming we're not missing some major influence in how security.d.o hosts are chosen) the distribution of active IPs is decidedly non-uniform -- C+D+E+F above accounts for 25% of the address space, but only 4.95% of the bandwidth. Compare that to B which also accounts for 25% of the address space, but accounts for 40.56% of the bandwidth. As it happens, A, B and C-F correspond to the old class A, B and C addressing regimes, ie /8, /16 and /24 allocations). Well, F includes the old multicast and reserved address classes too. Does it make sense that in today's internet, 55% of the traffic comes from old class A addresses, 40% from old class B addresses and just 5% from old class C addresses? Comparing that to the xkcd internet map [0], A is the left half, B is the bottom right, and C is the top right. steffani is in the 128 block marked "various registrars", just to the bottom right of the center of the map, and lobos and villa are in the 212 "Europe" block just above and to the right of the the center of the map. [0] http://xkcd.com/195/ > They are functioning now, but the higher the probability that we'll burden > some sites with excess traffic, [...] Shouldn't we be doing the same thing OFTC's done anyway, and dynamically change our DNS responses based on the current capacity of the various hosts in the rotation? Then we can automatically deal with temporarily dead hosts, or give hosts a controlled amount of traffic (x% of requests, rather than just an equal share, eg). I know Ryan (and maybe Jason?) had been wanting to do this for ages, but it required coding that hadn't been done. If OFTC has deployed code that we could just duplicate, that sounds like the thing to do -- for ftp.d.o as well as ftp.us and security.d.o, for that matter. Bug#456629: lintian: detect missing version mangling in debian/watch for dfsg-ed packages
Package: lintian Version: 1.23.36 Severity: wishlist -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 In case of packages that have been modified to comply with DFSG, it is necessary that either opts=uversionmangle or opts=dversionmangle is used in the debian/watch file if the file exists. Failing which, uscan reports that the current version itself is not available on the site. It would be useful to have a check that warns about this (it could even be an error because the watch file is useless without the version mangling option). Bug#456626: [new] diff2patches: simple script to extract patches from .diff.gz files out of the debian/ scope
Source: devscripts Severity: wishlist Tags: patch I've written a simple shell script which uses lsdiff and filterdiff (from the patchutils package) to extract patches from a .diff.gz file placing them under debian/ or, if present, debian/patches. Every modified file is extracted in a different .patch file. If a slash is present in the affected/patched file, it is replaced with three underscores. Bug#456214: Patch to prevent hal from causing wakeups
tags 456214 + patch kthxbye Attached is a patch to fix the problem with wakeups. This patch does CDROM_MEDIA_CHANGED first, and if it reports true, then checks to make sure the drive is closed and then that the drive is not lying. This causes the number of wakeups from HAL to go to zero. It also has the side effect of issuing an extra ioctl(2) when the drive tray is open, which is harmless since the drive tray should be closed most of the time. -- brian m. carlson / brian with sandals: Houston, Texas, US +1 713 440 7475 | http://crustytoothpaste.ath.cx/~bmc | My opinion only a typesetting engine: http://crustytoothpaste.ath.cx/~bmc/code/thwack OpenPGP: RSA v4 4096b 88AC E9B2 9196 305B A994 7552 F1BA 225C 0223 B187 diff -ur hal.old/hald/linux/addons/addon-storage.c hal-0.5.10/hald/linux/addons/addon-storage.c --- hal.old/hald/linux/addons/addon-storage.c 2007-07-26 18:00:28.0 + +++ hal-0.5.10/hald/linux/addons/addon-storage.c 2007-12-17 02:17:58.0 + @@ -405,33 +405,37 @@ * * @todo Use MMC-2 API if applicable */ - drive = ioctl (fd, CDROM_DRIVE_STATUS, CDSL_CURRENT); - switch (drive) { - case CDS_NO_INFO: - case CDS_NO_DISC: - case CDS_TRAY_OPEN: - case CDS_DRIVE_NOT_READY: - break; - - case CDS_DISC_OK: + if (support_media_changed) { /* some CD-ROMs report CDS_DISK_OK even with an open * tray; if media check has the same value two times in * a row then this seems to be the case and we must not * report that there is a media in it. */ - if (support_media_changed && - ioctl (fd, CDROM_MEDIA_CHANGED, CDSL_CURRENT) && - ioctl (fd, CDROM_MEDIA_CHANGED, CDSL_CURRENT)) { - } else { + if (ioctl (fd, CDROM_MEDIA_CHANGED, CDSL_CURRENT) && + ioctl(fd, CDROM_DRIVE_STATUS, CDSL_CURRENT) == CDS_DISC_OK + && !ioctl (fd, CDROM_MEDIA_CHANGED, CDSL_CURRENT)) { got_media = TRUE; } - break; - - case -1: - HAL_ERROR (("CDROM_DRIVE_STATUS failed: %s\n", strerror(errno))); - break; - - default: - break; + } else { + drive = ioctl (fd, CDROM_DRIVE_STATUS, CDSL_CURRENT); + switch (drive) { +/* explicit fallthrough */ + case CDS_NO_INFO: + case CDS_NO_DISC: + case CDS_TRAY_OPEN: + case CDS_DRIVE_NOT_READY: +break; + + case CDS_DISC_OK: +got_media = TRUE; +break; + + case -1: +HAL_ERROR (("Error: CDROM_DRIVE_STATUS failed: %s\n", strerror(errno))); +break; + + default: +break; + } } /* check if eject button was pressed */ diff -ur hal.old/hald/linux/probing/probe-storage.c hal-0.5.10/hald/linux/probing/probe-storage.c --- hal.old/hald/linux/probing/probe-storage.c 2007-10-11 20:09:58.0 + +++ hal-0.5.10/hald/linux/probing/probe-storage.c 2007-12-17 02:14:46.0 + @@ -352,34 +352,37 @@ * * @todo Use MMC-2 API if applicable */ - drive = ioctl (fd, CDROM_DRIVE_STATUS, CDSL_CURRENT); - switch (drive) { - /* explicit fallthrough */ - case CDS_NO_INFO: - case CDS_NO_DISC: - case CDS_TRAY_OPEN: - case CDS_DRIVE_NOT_READY: - break; - - case CDS_DISC_OK: + if (support_media_changed) { /* some CD-ROMs report CDS_DISK_OK even with an open * tray; if media check has the same value two times in * a row then this seems to be the case and we must not * report that there is a media in it. */ - if (support_media_changed && - ioctl (fd, CDROM_MEDIA_CHANGED, CDSL_CURRENT) && - ioctl (fd, CDROM_MEDIA_CHANGED, CDSL_CURRENT)) { - } else { + if (ioctl (fd, CDROM_MEDIA_CHANGED, CDSL_CURRENT) && + ioctl(fd, CDROM_DRIVE_STATUS, CDSL_CURRENT) == CDS_DISC_OK + && !ioctl (fd, CDROM_MEDIA_CHANGED, CDSL_CURRENT)) { +got_media = TRUE; + } + } else { + drive = ioctl (fd, CDROM_DRIVE_STATUS, CDSL_CURRENT); + switch (drive) { +/* explicit fallthrough */ + case CDS_NO_INFO: + case CDS_NO_DISC: + case CDS_TRAY_OPEN: + case CDS_DRIVE_NOT_READY: +break; + + case CDS_DISC_OK: got_media = TRUE; +break; + + case -1: +HAL_ERROR (("Error: CDROM_DRIVE_STATUS failed: %s\n", strerror(errno))); +break; + + default: +break; } - break; - - case -1: - HAL_ERROR (("Error: CDROM_DRIVE_STATUS failed: %s\n", strerror(errno))); - break; - - default: - break; } if (got_media) { signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#456625: compiz: Wobbly windows plugin should allow snapping to edges without sticking to edges
Package: compiz Version: 0.6.3~git20071208.25941d14-1 Severity: wishlist I like the behavior of snapping to the edges of the screen or to other windows by requiring a bit of resistance to push the edge of the dragged window past the edge of the screen or another window. Bug#456624: abiword-gnome: renders Khmer Unicode as small circles unless a Khmer font is applied
Package: abiword-gnome Version: 2.4.6-5+b1 Severity: normal Tags: l10n I was testing a fix to the ttf-khmeros package so that fontconfig prefers the right fonts for sans/sans-serif/monospace. It worked in GTK-based text apps, but I wanted to test word-processors too. OpenOffice works fine, but in abiword typing with the GNOME/Xorg's Cambodia keyboard layout results in small circles that are slightly above Latin characters (as if they are superscript formatted) and the same happens when ttf-khmeros is not installed. If I then change the font on those characters to one of the fonts from ttf-khmeros, such as "Khmer OS" or "Khmer OS System", then the characters display correctly. Since abiword depends on pango, I would have expected this to work properly in all cases, perhaps it doesn't use pango/freetype correctly? Here is some nonsense Khmer text you can paste into abiword: ថដសថ៣សថឆោដលឹសថថហស៤ខតសដថងសដថងេរ១៣៤ត៤យ១២៣៤៤៦៣២៤៦២៣៤៥ I also noted that if I change a line with both Latin and Khmer on it to the Homa font from the ttf-farsiweb package, then I get these circles for the whole line. If I use the Type1 font Yehuda CLM from the culmus package, then I get the squares one usually sees on Windows when a font isn't installed. It appears that abiword cannot handle text with characters that are not available in the currently applied font. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.23-1-686 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_AU.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_AU.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages abiword-gnome depends on: ii abiword-common 2.4.6-5 WYSIWYG word processor based on GT ii libart-2.0-22.3.19-3 Library of functions for 2D graphi ii libatk1.0-0 1.20.0-1 The ATK accessibility toolkit ii libbonobo2-02.20.1-1 Bonobo CORBA interfaces library ii libbonoboui2-0 2.20.0-1 The Bonobo UI library ii libc6 2.7-4GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libcairo2 1.4.10-1.2 The Cairo 2D vector graphics libra ii libenchant1c2a 1.3.0-5 a wrapper library for various spel ii libfontconfig1 2.5.0-2 generic font configuration library ii libfreetype62.3.5-1+b1 FreeType 2 font engine, shared lib ii libfribidi0 0.10.7-4 Free Implementation of the Unicode ii libgcc1 1:4.2.2-4GCC support library ii libgconf2-4 2.20.1-1 GNOME configuration database syste ii libglade2-0 1:2.6.2-1library to load .glade files at ru ii libglib2.0-02.14.4-2 The GLib library of C routines ii libgnome2-0 2.20.1.1-1 The GNOME 2 library - runtime file ii libgnomecanvas2-0 2.20.1.1-1 A powerful object-oriented display ii libgnomeprint2.2-0 2.18.2-1 The GNOME 2.2 print architecture - ii libgnomeprintui2.2-02.18.1-1 GNOME 2.2 print architecture User ii libgnomeui-02.20.1.1-1 The GNOME 2 libraries (User Interf ii libgnomevfs2-0 1:2.20.1-1 GNOME Virtual File System (runtime ii libgtk2.0-0 2.12.3-1 The GTK+ graphical user interface ii libgucharmap6 1:1.10.1-1 Unicode browser widget library (sh ii libice6 2:1.0.4-1X11 Inter-Client Exchange library ii liborbit2 1:2.14.7-0.1 libraries for ORBit2 - a CORBA ORB ii libpango1.0-0 1.18.3-1 Layout and rendering of internatio ii libperl5.8 5.8.8-12 Shared Perl library ii libpng12-0 1.2.15~beta5-3 PNG library - runtime ii libpopt01.10-3 lib for parsing cmdline parameters ii libsm6 2:1.0.3-1+b1 X11 Session Management library ii libstdc++6 4.2.2-4 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libx11-62:1.0.3-7X11 client-side library ii libxft2 2.1.12-2 FreeType-based font drawing librar ii libxml2 2.6.30.dfsg-3GNOME XML library ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3.3.dfsg-7 compression library - runtime Versions of packages abiword-gnome recommends: ii abiword-plugins-gnome 2.4.6-5+b1 plugins for AbiWord (with GNOME de -- bye, pabs http://wiki.debian.org/PaulWise signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

Yes, that would be nice. The package currently build-depends on python2.4-dev, *and* an python-dev | python-all-dev; simplifying that can only be a win. BTW, the previous patch didn't work, I made the mistake of thinking that the sonames were being set from within debian/rules when the complex logic in debian/rules was apparently just there to keep pace with upstream. So that's a factor in not dropping the explicit "g++-4.2" build-dep for now. The attached patch works quite a bit better, and is what I'll upload if it finishes checking out here. Bug#456214: hal: should not poll CD drive so often

The open,ioctl,close triple will cause various wakeups every two seconds.. But only in a short time, so that shouldn't have a big impact on the time your processor can actually spent in a lower power state. Waking up the CD drive to poll its status isn't particularly good for power savings, either, regardless of what the main processor is doing. Only never SATA drives support hardware notifications (via libata). For others, the only options is to poll, unfortunately. Why polling every 2 secs causes 20 wakeups per seconds is unclear to me. Maybe a driver issue, maybe not. You'll pardon me if I don't believe you. HAL itself has a comment that says: /* Check if a disc is in the drive * * @todo Use MMC-2 API if applicable */ Most CD-ROM drives support MMC-2, because MMC-2 is pretty old. Run "wodim -checkdrive" to see. My drive implements MMC-2, and because HAL doesn't implement the MMC-2 API, I have no clue whether it might use a more efficient method. You also ignored the rest of my comment, where I was pointing out that hal is wastefully checking the tray status when that's really rather irrelevant to whether the media has changed. In other words, hal is not doing everything it can to be efficient. Whether that will have an effect on the number of wakeups is so far unknown, but it is unlikely to hurt. Finally, even if polling is the only way to do something (which I am not conceding), that doesn't mean it's not broken, and it certainly doesn't mean I have to like it. The ultimate problem is that hal is the third-leading cause of wakeups on my computer. For me, this is unacceptable. I'm pointing out that there are alternatives to the current method that are very likely more efficient, and hal isn't implementing them. I think it should be. If you don't, then please tag this bug wontfix, and I'll argue it out with the upstream maintainers. But please don't try to tell me that I don't know what I'm talking about when the code contradicts you. I am now going to hack on the code, and see if I can fix this bug. -- brian m. carlson / brian with sandals: Houston, Texas, US +1 713 440 7475 | http://crustytoothpaste.ath.cx/~bmc | My opinion only a typesetting engine: http://crustytoothpaste.ath.cx/~bmc/code/thwack OpenPGP: RSA v4 4096b 88AC E9B2 9196 305B A994 7552 F1BA 225C 0223 B187 signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#456623: debian-installer: Please offer the option of using an unpartitioned disk as an FS
Package: debian-installer Severity: wishlist When installing a virtual machine, I'd really like to use the entire unpartitioned virtual disk as a filesystem, rather than partitioning it. Doing so then makes the virtual disk contain a filesystem image directly, which I can more easily mount from the host OS. However, debian-installer does not let me create a filesystem directly on a disk device; choosing a disk device only offers me the option of partitioning it. Similarly, I might want to use disks directly when doing RAID and/or LVM, rather than creating and using partitions. I could live with needing to use expert mode to do this, though I'd prefer to have the option more readily available. - Josh Triplett -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.24-rc4 (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#456620: "start" and "restart" behave differently
Package: dovecot-common Version: 1.0.rc15-2etch1 In the /etc/init.d/dovecot script, the "start" option processes the "protocols" line in dovecot.conf file and doesn't start dovecot unless there is an entry there that isn't in the inetd.conf file. The "restart" option doesn't do any checking and will always start the daemon. This means that with the default install (which has "protocols" commented out), using "/etc/init.d/dovecot restart" will start dovecot, but the rc*.d links won't. If you manually start dovecot after the install (with "/etc/init.d/dovecot restart"), it will silently fail to start at the next reboot. It would presumably also cause problems if someone was using inetd and issued a restart command on dovecot. I'm not an expert, but maybe using: $0 stop sleep 1 $0 start would be better than: start-stop-daemon --stop --quiet --oknodo --exec $DAEMON sleep 1 start-stop-daemon --start --quiet --oknodo --exec $DAEMON I also think that having the default install leave dovecot configured so it won't start is not a good idea having the default protocols line ("protocols = imap imaps") uncommented or having the start script use the default commented line if there's not an uncommented one might be better. Bug#453216: mingw32-binutils FTBFS: not detecting texinfo 4.11 as >= 4.4
On investigating this bug, I find that the root configure script has a broken test for whether texinfo is at least version 4.4, on line 3840. So it's setting MAKEINFO to ".../missing makeinfo" which messes up the build in libiberty. If I fix the regex on line 3841 (or line 2340 of configure.in) to 'texinfo[^0-9]*([1-3][0-9]|4\.([1-3][0-9]|[4-9])|[5-9])' then the package builds successfully. -- Daniel Schepler -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". It's hard to reproduce, and I kind of abandonned whitelister as upstream, and is working on a replacement of it in C. Note that when it "fails" this way, postfix falls back to the next measure, which usually is greylist, so it generates delay, but won't let you lose any mail. But no "substantive response" in two closings. Perhaps the above disappointing boilerplate is a white lie, or just a guideline or ideal state. Obviously almost nobody would type that in, but people might mistype the name of an existing package 'foo', and get a corresponding page for 'fou' and then have to link around till they find out there's no 'fou' -- it's better to tell 'em immediately rather than have sloppy bogus data wasting their time. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#456376: xfonts-wqy: fontconfig setting changed and no longer matches the, debconf question
A few comments for the reported problem: First, the change of the default font is expected, as the results of the upstream fontconfig file. This file has two major purposes: 1. enable wqy bitmap song even the bitmap fonts are globally disabled 2. create a synthetic font for generic aliases with the following specifications: for Chinese 9pt-12pt: use wqy bitmaps for Chinese other sizes: use default preferred vector Chinese fonts(uming/ukai) for non CJK characters, use default preferred vector Latin fonts the motivations of using this config file is detailed in Fedora's font list: https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-fonts-list/2007-November/msg00062.html after discussions, a more robust fontconfig file can be found at: https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-fonts-list/2007-December/msg2.html the screenshots of the en and zh desktops can be found at http://wenq.org/gallery/albums/userpics/10002/F8-wqy-newconfig_enUS.png http://wenq.org/gallery/albums/userpics/10002/F8-wqy-newconfig_zhCN.png The synthetic font described above is effectively equivalent to replacing the Firefly bitmaps in Uming by wqy-bitmap song (these two fonts can not be merged due to licenses). If the non-CJK glyphs were correctly displayed with Latin vector fonts, as designed, then there should be no other differences. Although this can also be achieved with distribution-specific font preference list (such as language-selector.conf in Ubuntu), using package-specific fontconfig file to redefine sans/serif/mono and create synthetic fonts will do harm, IMO, to user's controllability: who wanted to install xfonts-wqy may already prefer wqy bitmaps over firefly bitmaps; those who do not like wqy bitmaps may simply remove it and return to system default. However, Debian may have different fontconfig files to Fedora/Ubuntu (only Bitstream vera, and no Dejavu LCG?), and the font rendering may be different from what I got (Fedora8 in my above discussions). You can either twig the config file and create a patch if needed to achieve all the designed specifications, or delete the synthetic font section to keep with system default order (65-nonlatin.conf I guess). Again, my feeling is that setting one font as default using self-contained config file is nothing logically wrong or undermines user's controllability (actually, I think it saves people's time for setting it as default everywhere). -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". It's not, except that the boost Debian packages are encoding the gcc version in the soname by hand. This is wrong, but needs to be addressed in order to get icu through in a timely fashion. The attached patch looks to me like it does the necessary handling of switching to gcc-4.2 without breaking the ABI. I'm still going through the QA on it, but so far it looks sane; if anyone notices a problem with it, please let me know, otherwise I'll plan to NMU once I have a good build and am happy that I haven't broken anything. In the future, it might be a good idea to switch away from "g++-4.2" to just "g++"; the -3 upload in experimental actually has a latent RC bug, because it invokes g++-4.2 but doesn't build-depend on it, so that package will break suddenly the next time the default g++ version changes. > In any case, I wouldn't have uploaded without testing carefully. Given that this fixes a 10-day-old RC bug, anyone > could do an NMU at this point anyway. Jay, if you have time to check on your side that this patch gives a useful set of packages, that would certainly be helpful; I don't have anything than uses boost, so I'm really checking that the packages look right on paper after the change, not confirming that the libs still work the same at runtime. This /shouldn't/ be an issue given that there's no magic in -3 to make the packages work, but the extra assurance wouldn't hurt either. And maybe you'd have a working package sooner than I at the rate I'm currently going, and could feel free to upload it before me. :) -- Steve Langasek Give me a lever long enough and a Free OS Debian Developer to set it on, and I can move the world. I, the lame lib maintainer, tried to compile coriander and one of his own applications, for the juju stack, git cloning libraw and svn co'ing libdc1394 and cvs co'ing coriander. I had to modify coriander slightly and my own application some more, because the API of libdc1394 is still changing. After it all compiled, I tried it on a computer with multiple IIDC camera's attached. The applications see all devices. However, you can only read out one device at a time, because ISO channel allocation is not implemented according to libdc1394. Second, the camera image is messed up, the first 10% is fine but the rest is junk. I'm not the upstream maintainer, I'm the Debian maintainer. I do not mind fixing little things myself, but fixing this is beyond my scope. Upstream is clearly not ready, I cannot package unreleased stuff from git/svn/cvs that is not working properly anyway. Again, for those Debian users who want a *working* FireWire stack, please enable the old modules again. You can build both the old and the new stack. You can blacklist the old modules by default so that only the modules for the new stack get loaded unless the user wants the old one back. -- Met vriendelijke groet / with kind regards, Guus Sliepen <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#456518: scons 0.97.0d20071212-1 doesn't track dependencies correctly

The problem arises only when using your Combine() builder (which is why I wasn't able to reproduce before you provided instructions). What is happening is that the Combine() builder is writing full paths to the files it includes into the generated C or C++ file. This causes SCons to ignore the dependency since it assumes that a fully qualified path is a reference to a file not part of the project build and which should therefore not be included in dependency generation (this is a noticable preformance win for users including files on networked drives). You could avoid the problem for now by arranging for your Combine() builder to use relative rather than absolute paths or by not using the Combine() builder. -- "You grabbed my hand and we fell into it, like a daydream - or a fever." signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#456610: Race between attach_to_status_icon() and gtk.status_icon_new_*()
Package: python-notify Version: 0.1.1-2 Severity: normal If I try to create a status icon and then immediately display a notification for it, the notification pops up in the wrong place. If I create a status icon, wait for $SHORT_INTERVAL, and then display a notification, the notification pops up in the right place. (and if $SHORT_INTERVAL is too short, the notification pops up in a *different* incorrect place!) I suspect that there's a race between figuring out the location of the icon and attaching the notification. The notification really ought to wait for the status icon to become ready before it displays itself. The attached file displays two status icons, each with a notification that's created at the same time as the status icon. The first one pops up in the wrong place (on my computer) -- some distance away from the status tray area. The second one is created after the main loop has run for a full second, and pops up where I would expect it. (note that delaying outside the main loop, or running a single iteration with gtk.main_iteration(), are not sufficient to fix this problem) Daniel -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.22-3-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) (ignored: LC_ALL set to en_US.UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages python-notify depends on: ii libatk1.0-0 1.20.0-1 The ATK accessibility toolkit ii libc6 2.7-4 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libcairo2 1.4.12-1 The Cairo 2D vector graphics libra ii libdbus-1-3 1.1.2-1simple interprocess messaging syst ii libdbus-glib-1-2 0.74-1 simple interprocess messaging syst ii libffi4 4.2.2-4Foreign Function Interface library ii libglib2.0-0 2.14.4-2 The GLib library of C routines ii libgtk2.0-0 2.12.3-2 The GTK+ graphical user interface ii libnotify1 [libnotify1-gtk2.1 0.4.4-3sends desktop notifications to a n ii libpango1.0-0 1.18.3-1 Layout and rendering of internatio ii python2.4.4-6An interactive high-level object-o ii python-gtk2 2.12.0-2 Python bindings for the GTK+ widge ii python-support0.7.5 automated rebuilding support for p python-notify recommends no packages. -- no debconf information #!/usr/bin/env python import pygtk pygtk.require('2.0') import gtk import gobject import pynotify import sys if not pynotify.init('Notify'): sys.stderr.write('Unable to initialize pynotify.\n') sys.exit(1) n = pynotify.Notification("Summary", "A brief message from our sponsor.", None) n.connect('closed', gtk.main_quit) trayicon = gtk.status_icon_new_from_icon_name('info') n.attach_to_status_icon(trayicon) if not n.show(): sys.stderr.write('Error showing the notification.\n') sys.exit(1) try: gtk.main() finally: n.close() del trayicon trayicon = gtk.status_icon_new_from_icon_name('info') def setup_notification(*args): n = pynotify.Notification("Summary", "A brief message from our sponsor.", None) n.connect('closed', gtk.main_quit) n.attach_to_status_icon(trayicon) if not n.show(): sys.stderr.write('Error showing the notification.\n') gtk.main_quit() return False gobject.timeout_add(1000, setup_notification) try: gtk.main() finally: n.close() del trayicon

For others, the only options is to poll, unfortunately. Why polling every 2 secs causes 20 wakeups per seconds is unclear to me. Maybe a driver issue, maybe not. Bug#454658: localepurge: Remove dangling symlinks in /usr/share/man and /etc/alternatives
Hello Behan, sorry for answering so late, but better late than never... ;) Thanks a lot for your patch, although i have decided not to include it in localepurge. The reason to decide against is simply that i'd like localepurge to stay what it's name suggests. While i think that your idea is quite interesting i don't think it fits into the scope of localepurge. May i suggest something else? The mechanism is aleady there and there is no need to have to rely on localepurge to take advantage of it. So the following should perfectly integrate your idea with apt: create a file named like e.g. /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/99-danglsyms containing following lines: -snip // Get rid of dangling symlinks after package installation DPkg { Post-Invoke {"if [ -x /usr/local/sbin/danglsyms ] && [ $(ps w -p "$PPID" | grep -c symlinks) != 1 ]; then /usr/local/sbin/danglsyms; else exit 0; fi";}; }; -snip And then put the code snippet you sent me into a separate executable shell script called /usr/local/sbin/danglsyms accordingly. I think this would be a more appropriate solution than bundling everything and the kitchen sink with localepurge. ;) Best regards P. *8^) Behan Webster wrote: Package: localepurge Version: 0.5.9 Severity: wishlist Tags: patch As I was using symlinks(1) to clean up /usr/share/man and /etc/alternatives this morning, I thought how convenient it would be to have this optionally performed by localepurge at the end. Here is a patch which runs "symlinks -r -d" on the the appropriate directories if "SYMLINKS" is specified in the /etc/locale.nopurge file. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#456214: hal: should not poll CD drive so often
On Sun, Dec 16, 2007 at 09:38:48PM +0100, Sjoerd Simons wrote: strace -tt would be more usefull as that outputs timing information. The open,ioctl,close triple will cause various wakeups every two seconds.. But only in a short time, so that shouldn't have a big impact on the time your processor can actually spent in a lower power state. I'll get that to you as soon as I log out and log in again. hal-disable-polling --enable-polling is broken (see the bug report I just filed). I'm not exceptionally pleased by the fact that HAL is polling at all; polling is a fundamentally broken way to do things, and despite the fact that the hardware is broken (by not supporting the MMC commands), it still rubs me the wrong way. Whatever it's doing, it should not be waking up the processor on average 20 times a second. I will do some tests to see if hal-addon-storage wakes up the processor less if it doesn't open and close the drive all the time. Polling is indeed not a great thing to do, but unfortunately cd drivers don't appear to have a nice way to notify media insertion. Apparently hal knows that my drive supports CDROM_MEDIA_CHANGED, but it's not using it. Why? Ah, I see, it's checking if the tray is open first. Shouldn't it be checking only to see if there's a media change, since obviously if the tray is open, the media hasn't been changed yet? Then you can make the kernel do the hard work of determining how to most efficiently check the media change notification, with the asynchronous API, or the inefficient (polling) one. And apparently hal doesn't support using the MMC-2 API, it seems. Why? MMC-2 is ancient, and most drives should support it. -- brian m. carlson / brian with sandals: Houston, Texas, US +1 713 440 7475 | http://crustytoothpaste.ath.cx/~bmc | My opinion only a typesetting engine: http://crustytoothpaste.ath.cx/~bmc/code/thwack OpenPGP: RSA v4 4096b 88AC E9B2 9196 305B A994 7552 F1BA 225C 0223 B187 signature.asc Description: Digital signature

I'm sad to read a response that seems to be blaming and finger-pointing. Debian is about building a *system* and we all need to work together to that end. It seems to me that if you make a change that in turn requires a change in other packages -- indeed, it explicitly *breaks* other packages -- then it is incumbent on you to work with the other package maintainers to achieve the required changes. In the present case, it appears that the libraw maintainer, for one, wasn't informed (c.f. http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=453358). -Steve signature.asc Description: Digital signature
