Reading this paragraph I frankly do not understand what this package is
about (neither I do reading the forthcoming paragraphs): the first row
is almost useless as it is evident that we are talking about "debian
packaging" and "Solr Server" does not help in understanding what we are
talking about.

The short description is not explaining what the package is about
either.

Also, the Homepage does not belong to the long description, but to the
Homepage field in the source package stanza.

Please improve the descriptions.
Cheers.

Bug#492163: network-manager fails to respect /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf

2008-07-23 Thread Yves-Alexis Perez
Package: network-manager
Version: 0.6.6-2
Severity: normal

Hi,

I'd like to add some options in my /etc/resolv.conf, currently managed by
network-manager (btw the header is wrong, it says:

# Modified_by: NetworkManager
# Process: /usr/bin/NetworkManager

While there is no NetworkManager in /usr/bin (it's in /usr/sbin)

The option I added is:

prepend domain-search "corsac.net";

But it does *not* appear in the final resolv.conf.

n-m should respect options from dhclient.conf (I guess it uses dhclient) or at
least provide a way to add options.

Cheers,

Yes, I mean a remote user in a local group. I have found another strange

Bug#452689: KPowersave and KNetworkManager

2008-07-23 Thread Eric Doviak

Hello,

Let me begin by thanking Ana Guerrero and the rest of Debian's KDE team
for their prompt response to the problems caused when a very stubborn
Debian kernel maintainer disabled support for /proc/acpi.[1]

Thank you for taking the time to provide people like me with a great
desktop!

==

When I recently upgraded my Lenny system and brought in KPowersave, I
had no trouble suspending or resuming. However, KNetworkManager was
unable to reinitialize my wireless connection (Atheros with proprietary
Madwifi drivers). Specifically, KNetworkManager would show me that it
had detected 5 or 6 networks, but it was unable to connect to any of
them. So I ran "iwlist scan" and here's what I got:

[ Wed 23-Jul-2008 23.42 root ] eric # iwlist scan
loInterface doesn't support scanning.

eth0 Interface doesn't support scanning.

wifi0 Interface doesn't support scanning.

ath1 No scan results

[ Wed 23-Jul-2008 23.42 root ] eric #
[ Wed 23-Jul-2008 23.42 root ] eric #

This bug has been reported [2] and rumor has it that this is a
well-known issue [3]. (I cannot say that I knew about it however!).

I can unequivocally state that KPowersave caused the problem. I
downgraded to kernel 2.6.24 and reverted to KLaptop 3.5.9-1 and the
problem vanished.

Is their a workaround for this problem? or do we have to suffer in silence?

Thanks,
- Eric

It is *very* unlikely that this problem is related to console-data.

If, as long as you can login from a console, typing is working
properly, then there is no chance this is related to c-d.

For instance, the console keymaps and the X keymaps have no
interaction together.

Stupid suggestion, but did you try changing the *keyboard* of your machine.

But this is not a problem in reportbug itself but in the configuration
of the local MTA. There is no right action we can do about it. I'll
try to make it clearer in the documentation and the pre-submit page
for reportbug that the MTA should be set-up and working correctly to
let reportbug do its job.

Kindly,

Bug#492159: eruby: Web server integration should be made easier

2008-07-23 Thread Josef Spillner
Package: eruby
Version: 1.0.5-1
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

The eruby package is not well integrated with the rest of the system.
The user still needs to perform a lot of manual work to get it running
for the common use case of embedding Ruby into HTML pages.

I suggest to add a file /etc/apache2/conf.d/eruby with the following
contents:

  AddType application/x-httpd-eruby .rhtml
  Action application/x-httpd-eruby /cgi-bin/eruby
  ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/eruby /usr/bin/eruby

As well as integration for other web servers once there is a demand.

The file could be placed in /usr/share/doc/eruby/examples with a hint
in README.Debian at the very minimum. Although I'd say that putting it
into the Apache dir even without a dependency on Apache wouldn't be too
intrusive.

P.S. The report was written on a Kubuntu system but its reportbug doesn't work
and the bug equally applies to all Debian versions listed on p.d.o.

Bug#492158: amarokapp: free(): invalid next size (fast): 0x0a00d0e0

2008-07-23 Thread poizon
Package: amarok
Version: 1.4.9.1-2

Amarok freezes with the xine engine after starting, stopping or at the end of a
certain mp3 file.
With the yauap engine works fine.
After loading the file, gdb shows the following message:
"TagLib: ID3v2.4 no longer supports the frame type TDAT. It will be discarded
from the tag."

I have attached the complete gdb output.

I think, this bug is related to the ID3 tag, because altering the ID3 tag with
MusicBrainz solves the problem.

I am using Debian Lenny, kernel 2.6.25-2-686 (2.6.25-7) and libc6 2.7-10.

That worked for me on my sid desktop at least. I assume it'll work for
other users as well.

Bug#483297: fossology: packaging status

2008-07-23 Thread Matt Taggart
Just a quick update on the status of packaging fossology...

As mentioned in the ITP, I've been working to fix the upstream build and
install process in order to make packaging easier and more supportable. I
am doing that work on a branch of the upstream svn, more info at

   http://fossology.org/new_build_system

At this point everything builds and installs properly, but I need to work
on automating things that need to happen post-install (db setup, user/group
setup, conffile setup, etc.). I'm working on that now and hope to merge all
this work on the branch onto the trunk soon. Then we need to shake out any
problems with the new system and then I can package.

Bug#492026: libsvn-dev: libtool file and package dependencies don't work together

Yes, because they are required for static linking.

> This causes problems when building apps with libtool from sources,
> even if these apps don't need the symbols from neon-gnutls

Can you demonstrate the problem? As far as I can tell, libtool handles
both static and dynamic linking correctly:

$ libtool --version
ltmain.sh (GNU libtool) 1.5.26 Debian 1.5.26-4 (1.1220.2.493 2008/02/01
16:58:18)

$ libtool --mode=link gcc -o foo foo.o /usr/lib/libsvn_ra-1.la
gcc -o foo foo.o /usr/lib/libsvn_ra-1.so

$ libtool --mode=link gcc -static -o foo foo.o /usr/lib/libsvn_ra-1.la
gcc -o foo foo.o /usr/lib/libsvn_ra-1.so -L/usr/lib -lsvn_ra_local-1
/usr/lib/libsvn_repos-1.so /usr/lib/libsvn_fs-1.so -lsvn_fs_fs-1
-lsvn_fs_base-1 -ldb -lsvn_fs_util-1 -lsvn_ra_svn-1 /usr/lib/libsasl2.so
-lresolv -lsvn_ra_neon-1 -lneon-gnutls -lsvn_ra_serf-1 /usr/lib/libserf-0.so
-lssl -lcrypto /usr/lib/libsvn_delta-1.so /usr/lib/libsvn_subr-1.so
/usr/lib/libaprutil-1.so -lldap -llber /usr/lib/libdb-4.6.so -lpq
/usr/lib/libmysqlclient_r.so -lnsl -lm /usr/lib/libsqlite3.so
/usr/lib/libexpat.so -lz /usr/lib/libapr-1.so -luuid -lrt -lcrypt -lpthread -ldl

(This does leave open a different question: why does libtool not pass
-static to gcc, and why does it pass .so files instead of .a files?
But those are libtool issues, not libsvn-dev issues.)

That's right. The problem though, is that the libglide3 package in Debian
does not support Voodoo 2 boards, which libglide2 does.

We have support for Voodoo 2 now in glide3x upstream, but I've not yet
packaged that for Debian, and I don't think I'm going to do this close
to the freeze. But for lenny+1 though, I'd like to get rid of libglide2
by switching the few remaining packages to ligblide3.

guillem

Bug#488144:

2008-07-23 Thread Victor Lowther

Hi, upstream pm-utils maintainer here:

My current plan to deal with the bug reports floating around on the
Intel kernel modesetting breakage is to modify 98smart-kernel-video to
still pass the --quirk-s3 parameters if they are present, and filter out
the rest of the quirks. This code is already checked into the
pm-utils-1.1 branch upstream -- if you want to test it, just replace
your 98smart-kernel-video with the latest one on that branch.

The nvidia and fglrx drivers will still be quirk-free in all cases.

I plan on releasing pm-utils-1.1.2.4 with these fixes next Sunday or
Monday, depending on what else is happening in my life at the time.

Bug#475649: font-lock-global-modes isn't interpreted correctly

2008-07-23 Thread Rob Browning

This was reported as a bug against Emacs 22 in Debian unstable. If
you don't consider this a bug, just let me know, and I'll close it.

Briefly, the claim is that font-lock-global-modes doesn't work as
documented -- values of t and nil are treated identically.

(If possible, please maintain the CC to 475649-forwarded.)

Bug#492157: ITP: apollo -- The Apollo Solr Server

2008-07-23 Thread Paul Waite
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Paul Waite <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

* Package name: apollo
  Version : 1.8.0
  Upstream Author :
* URL : http://lucene.apache.org/solr/
* License : GPL, Apache 2.0, CDDL 1.0, BSD, MIT
Programming Lang: (C, C++, C#, Perl, Python, etc.)
Description : The Apollo Solr Server

The Apollo Solr Server is a debian packaging of the standard Solr Server
available from the Apache project (http://lucene.apache.org/solr/). This
package can be installed with replication enabled, either as a Master or
a Slave. The latter is set up for you to rsync from the Master via cron.

This apollo package also supports any number of instances of Solr,
running on separate ports. These are managed via a common utility 'apollo'
to provide create, remove, purge, start, stop, restart, and status.

The package also includes a MaoriMacronsFilter plugin which can be set up
in your schema.xml to map macronned characters to stright ascii on both
index and query operations. The default schema.xml has this set up for
the 'text' field type already. It is a trivial exercise to provide other
mappings.

Just to make sure I understand correctly. Is this is an appropriate
version for emacs22 (Emacs 22.2), and should be be sufficient to just
replace the existing 22.2 tramp.el with this file?

Thanks

Bug#492153: konversation crashes with SIGSEGV on leaving a channel

2008-07-23 Thread Steve Cotton
Package: konversation
Version: 1.1~-rc1+svn834660-1
Severity: important

I start Konversation and connect to irc.debian.org, which is set
to open 6 channels (connection is required for the crash).

Wait for a minute. A delay here seems to be required.
Using channels that have already been created also seems to help.

Right-click on one of the channel tabs, select "close tab", say
OK to "do you want to leave #test", and SIGSEGV.

The same crash happens if I type the /part command.

There's a crash with a different call-stack if you close
Konversation instead of quitting a channel. The call stacks are
different enough that I'm logging them separately.

Weird stuff about my setup:
I've previously had kdebase-runtime-bin-kde4 4:4.0.98-1
installed (but removed it before logging this).

I can replicate this with the set of channels
#test
#test2
#test3
#test4
#test5
#test6
none of which are passworded (the crash is in getPassword).

Bug#492150: konversation crashes with SIGSEGV on close [1.1~-rc1+svn834660-1]

2008-07-23 Thread Steve Cotton
Package: konversation

Another crash-on-close bug.

I start Konversation and connect to irc.debian.org, which is set

Wait for a minute. A delay here seems to be required.
Using channels that have already been created also seems to help.

I then close it with either the normal KDE WM's "X" button or

There's a crash with a different call-stack if you do the

enought that I'm logging them separately.

I'm currently thinking about "solving" this problem by using an ncurses

The comparison was between water dripping on forehead, and cursor
blinking in eyes, as I imagine you understood. If you want to suggest
a better way of phrasing it, feel free to do so, but I don't see what
the big deal is. I don't believe any reasonable reader thinks that the
source I am quoting is arguing that people are being forced to use
these applications as a form of punishment, which is how you seem to
be interpreting it. The comparison was to the sensation, not the
context in which the sensation is administered.

I'm unable to reproduce this, which leads me to believe it is (or was) a
problem in one of the libraries that Vim depends on. Are you still able
to reproduce this? If so, could you install the vim-dbg package and

Right. Did I ask you if you read the changelog entry?

That will work, thanks for the hint. Will be included after Lenny as the
current package will work fine.

Bug#490764: adns-tools should provide compatibility

2008-07-23 Thread Ian Jackson
clone 490764 -1
reassign -1 adns
retitle -1 adns-tools should provide compatibility
severity 490764 minor
retitle 490764 libadns1-bin has been renamed
thanks

As I have just said on debian-devel, I think that the release-critical
bug here is that adns-tools should Provide: libadns1-bin but does
not do so.

sauce should be changed to support the new name for the dependency as
an alternative, as it does for tcl.

Ian.

Giuseppe, does this actually still happen with 2.6.26?

It is OMG. Because it IS torture. And comparing that with a blinking cursor
is insane.

Indeed, but... The problem is that you can't expect any app handling
this itself. This would be insane.

That makes me think that OOo didn't detect on startup that you are under
GNOME. You *are* under GNOME (or Xfce which somehow is detected as GNOME),
right?

Otherwise, you can try export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP="gnome" before starting
OOo. (or "kde" for KDE, where the same should work, according to
upstream)

Rene

Thanks for trying to do the right thing but I'm sorry to say that I do
not agree with this NMU.

This mekes the package difficult to back- and forward-port. The new
adns-tools package should Provide: libadns1-bin

See my posting on debian-devel just now.

I am probably going to revert this change tomorrow, although I might
be persuaded to provide an alternative to support increased
compatibility.

Thanks,
Ian.

Bug#492039: libpam-krb5: ssh logins overwrite /tmp/krb5cc_0 (ccache documentation is wrong)

Oh! That's interesting. Nice catch -- that's exactly the problem. ssh
is still doing that reinitialize call but fixed the order, but if you
don't have a session module for pam-krb5, you get the same as the old
broken behavior when the reinitialize call was done first.

Thank you for this -- I will definitely add this to the documentation.

That explains why ccache wasn't working in krb5.conf; the auth setcred
module never looks at it if it's only called wth the reinitialize option,
since that's supposed to respect the existing ticket cache (it's intended
for use by screen savers).

Bug#441975: nvidia-glx should only provide the TLS version

I have been able to reproduce this on a lenny machine with a 2.6.25-2 kernel.
In order to do so one must use an nVidia graphics card with the nVidia binary
driver and /etc/ld.so.nohwcaps must exist. The test (as described in a
previous message) is that "perl -e 'use Qt'" will segfault.

This bug will affect any user of the nvidia-glx package who has their debconf
frontend set to kde (or similar) and tries to upgrade a package which makes
use of /etc/ld.so.nohwcaps (e.g. libc6). These users will be affected
irrespective of whether nvidia-graphics-drivers makes it into lenny or not.

Aurelian is largely correct with this. The nVidia installer comes with two
different copies of libnvidia-tls.so. inside the installer package.
 - According to the nvidia-installer docs, the version in
/usr/lib is for glibc <= 2.2, while the version in
   /usr/lib/tls is for glibc >= 2.3.
 - According to the README.Debian for nvidia-glx, however, the differing
versions are for 2.4 and 2.6 kernels (presumably on the assumption that
NPTL is implemented in the latter and not in the former).
Whichever of these interpretations is actually correct, the same version of
the library should be installed into both /usr/lib and /usr/lib/tls so that
the presence of /etc/ld.so.nohwcap does not affect which version of the
library is used (which it shouldn't).

On the basis of the nVidia docs it might seem reasonable to only ship the
second version, since lenny is guaranteed to come with glibc >= 2.3. In this
case we only require a one-line change to debian/rules to get things to work
(although the USE_TLS flag would become redundant and so we could also remove
related code and documentation).

On the other hand, if Randall's README.Debian is the more accurate, we might
break things for some users with older kernels. In this case it would take a
few more changes to get things to work (keep both versions of libnvidia-tls in
/usr/lib/nvidia and modify the init scripts to symlink both /usr/lib and
/usr/lib/tls to the same version).

My vote would be for the second option. It would be useful if people could
express their preferences so that I can produce a patch for the preferred
option. This would fix the nvidia-glx package, but does *not* fix the bug
completely.

As I said earlier, this bug will affect any of the users that I have
previously described, irrespective of whether an updated package makes it into
lenny - the presence/use of an old version of nvidia-glx will trigger this
bug. In order to actually fix the bug, nvidia-glx must be upgraded *before*
libc6 (or any other /etc/ld.so.nohwcap-using package).

My thoughts on this would be to make affected packages (e.g. libc6) Conflict
with nvidia-glx (< fixed-version). I'm no expert on how Debian/apt resolves
dependencies, so I'm not 100% sure whether this will result in:
 - removal of nvidia-glx;
 - no upgrade of affected packages;
 - or upgrade of nvidia-glx before affected packages (the desired result).
I'm also unsure of the politics of getting the affected packages to make the
required change, especially considering that they are probably frozen (e.g.
libc6).

Your thoughts and input would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Chris

It's much worse than that. Some scripts do the wrong thing when called

If the bug makes the program unusable to some group of people, then
perhaps it should be

without
rendering it completely unusable to everyone.

The word "torture", indeed, conjures up an image of something more
painful than annoying. That's why I prepended the words "Chinese
water". According to Wikipedia, Chinese water torture "was supposed to
drive its victim insane with the stress of water dripping on a part of
the forehead for a very long time". It doesn't sound OMG to me. For
some of those who suffer from autism or epilepsy or ADHD, and can't
"just ignore" the blinking, it must be an apt comparison. I am well
aware that most people aren't bothered by it.

Oh, thanks for letting me know. But ... I've tried installing
openoffice.org-gtk-gnome, openoffice.org-gnome, and
openoffice.org-gtk, and the problem persists. It doesn't look like
openoffice.org is using gtk yet though. The menubar is shaded and the

Thanks for the hint. I was waiting with the upload for the new upstream
version, which was released a few days ago. The package is prepared and
should be uploaded in the next few days and thus in time for Lenny.

Well, it's a place to start; if you would be willing to put together a patch
to do this for each of the programs in source/Makefile.in, I'd happily
accept it (since it would save me quite a bit of upload time for each
package revision :P).

To all devs (with or without commit access): I would really like this to
be an "active" decision on our part, as opposed to a "passive" one,
where we allow the decision to be made for us due to time passing. I.e.
either we decide that we do want our current state of 2.1 to be included
in Debian's next stable release, or we decide that we don't want that to
happen. As long as that decision is an active one, I can live with both.

The only negative impact of this on us I can see is the support/FAQ
issue mentioned above by Paul.

Raphael Hertzog writes ("Re: Bug#483655: queue.length assertion failure"):

Yes, sorry, but I really didn't have time then (I was already late and
was bashing out my mails in a hurry while fixing lots of other stuff
here) and then of course I forgot about it :-(.

I've uploaded it now FWIW at
 http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~ian/2008-07-24/varlibdpkg-483655.tar.gz
but the fix is trivial, and attached.

The assertion (and hence the bug) was introduced by me in my triggers
patch, and it causes this assertion failure whenever (and only when)
dpkg is stopping processing packages (for configure or remove) due to
too many errors. The assertion is overzealous and should be bypassed
in that case.

Since the only effect is to turn a correct nonzero exit into a
coredump (and incidentally to suppress the intended display of the
list of unprocessed packages) I think this bug is minor. But it
should be fixed for lenny; it is easy to see that the fix is correct.

Ian.

I can reproduce the problem by removing the pam_krb5.so entry
from /etc/pam.d/common-session (so I guess the real bug was
the fact that my earlier pam configuration omitted this line).

With that (broken) pam configuration, I use an /etc/krb5.conf
file that contains:

[appdefaults]
ccache=FILE:/tmp/krb5cc_%u_XX
pam =
{
  debug = true
  ticket_lifetime = 43200
  renew_lifetime = 43200
  forwardable = true
  krb4_convert = false
}

Logging in with ssh then creates this credentials file:

> ls -l /tmp/krb5cc*
-rw--- 1 houck houck 479 2008-07-23 19:05 /tmp/krb5cc_0

Here's the debug output from /var/log/auth.log:

Accepted keyboard-interactive/pam for houck from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx port 35914
ssh2
(pam_unix) session opened for user houck by (uid=0)
  (pam_krb5): none: pam_sm_setcred: entry (0x8)
(pam_krb5): none: no context found, creating one
(pam_krb5): houck: found initial ticket cache at /tmp/krb5cc_pam_J15925
(pam_krb5): houck: refreshing ticket cache /tmp/krb5cc_0
(pam_krb5): houck: initializing ticket cache /tmp/krb5cc_0
  (pam_krb5): houck: pam_sm_setcred: exit (success)

Since the ticket cache file name doesn't match the pattern specified
in krb5.conf, I concluded that the docs were wrong.

But if I now add the pam_krb5.so entry to /etc/pam.d/common-session
then the krb5.conf ccache specification is obeyed.

Perhaps I understand now, more or less.

Thanks,
-John

Bug#492140: xserver-xorg: xorg.conf generated with no ServerLayout section

2008-07-23 Thread Carl Worth
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.3+14
Severity: important

After running "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" I get an /etc/X11/xorg.conf
file that has no ServerLayout section. This means that the two
InputDevice sections (for keyboard and mouse) that are generated, but
not referenced by any other section, are ignored by the X server.

This became more critical to me, (and confusing), when I compiled an
upstream X server which changes the default behavior when finding
no InputDevice sections, (previously, it would automatically add
"kbd" and "mouse" but now it no longer does that---assuming that
the X server will pick things up from HAL). Now, the fact that the
server didn't pick things up from HAL is a separate issue.

The bug here is that the config file really *looks* like it is configuring
the keyboard and mouse, when it is in fact not. And yes, this is
quite mystic behavior on the part of the X server, but there it is.

Thanks,

-Carl

Bug#490025: this affects the version in testing too

It seems this package has never been built successfully by any buildd.

The version in testing does not build any architecture specific binaries
(which are not built on buildds). Given that right now azureus doesn't
work with gcj anyway maybe the package should go back to doing that.

Bug#492138: rsync init script status action

2008-07-23 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Package: rsync
Version: 3.0.3-1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

The rsync init script could really use a 'status' action, as defined in
the LSB specification [1]. Such an action allows a system administrator
to poll the service's init script and retrieve the status (running or
not) of the daemon.

Recently, a new function, status_of_proc(), was added
to /lib/lsb/init-functions that makes this relatively trivial. I've
attached a patch that adds this functionality.

Bug#492139: libclass-singleton-perl: new version 1.4

2008-07-23 Thread Kevin Ryde
Package: libclass-singleton-perl
Version: 1.03-7
Severity: wishlist

A new version 1.4 is on cpan, it'd be nice to have that packaged.

(It says 1.04 in the Changes file but 1.4 in the .pm etc, so whichever
is to be believed ...)

Bug#492084: atitvout: should this package be removed?

2008-07-23 Thread peter green

>BTW, would it be a good idea to package lrmi appart ?

In the short term IMO no. The library freeze is already in place and the
full freeze is imminent. So if you want to see the package in lenny you
don't want to be making major structural changes right now.

In the long term IMO it depends on whether the library is used elsewhere
in debian.

Bug#492137: unneeded build dependency on rman

2008-07-23 Thread Frank Lichtenheld
Package: vdesk
Severity: minor

vdesk build depends on rman but doesn't actually seem to use it during
build. The build dependency can probably simply be removed.

I just ran into the same problem, reportbug said the messages were being

dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config fixed it but a lot of bug reports never
went through.

Heya,

Just ran into this as well.

An error scrolls by while the system is booting, too:

find: /var/run/screen: No such file or directory

Creating the directory beforehand should fix this I guess.

"man kill" is documenting /bin/kill whereas your script would almost
certainly be running a kill builtin - running "command -v kill" would
confirm that.

kill -SIGNAME is an XSI extension and as such not currently permitted by
Debian policy - whether or not dash implements it - which is why
checkbashisms flags it; see
http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/95399/utilities/kill.html

There's an open bug against policy regarding allowing the XSI extension
to kill so I'm blocking this bug by that one.

Adam

The bug report is public and I'm happy for any further comments to be
public. I'll be uploading the fixed package tonight and closing this
bug. There is (IMHO) no need to use encryption for this matter any
longer.

That patch has been further revised and sync'd to emdebian.org.

That aspect is not a bug. The files in that location are meant to be
readable and output to the web. A further enhancement removes the / in
the $pkg variable so that '/path/to' becomes 'pathto' as $pkg should
only contain a package name, not a path.

Hmm. Discussion with upstream says me that OOo should also honour the
settings you did in Gnome already. Did you install openoffice.org-gtk?
Without it you don't have GTkified UI and no GTK integration.

I think you can also test with an old version of the package with
the _current_ maintainer scripts. Judging from your e-mail address you
should be able to create such a package;)

Ah, there is the problem then. I think this is fixed in a later
version. If your swap device isn't activated during configuration you
should get a question asking you if you want to continue or not, saying
yes should keep your configuration intact.

I can see what you're doing here but I think your patch has convinced
me that we should take a different approach than the one I took in my
previous patch for 143307 (sorry!).

As I previously commented, the problem was this state:
> > > Package: a
> > > Triggers-Awaited: b
> > >
> > > Package: b
> > > Status: ... installed

This can only arise due to incompletely written changes to the on-disk
status databases, because for the brief moments it is like this in
dpkg's core itself onerr_abort is set.

So instead of doing a null trigger processing step for b, why not
simply forget about the triggers-awaited for a ? After all b's
trigger processing must have succeeded earlier.

This should probably be done in trig_incorporate.

On the plus side this would be much less code than my previous patch
and your fixup to it.

Ian.

Thanks. I've since tested with your database and *still* can't reproduce
the problem.

However, what I'd lost sight of is that I can fix the config file to
include the attribute that makes it work for you, even if I can't
reproduce the bug. Not ideal, but at this stage a workable option.

Watch out for an upload any minute now.

md2 is not usually enabled as a swapping device. It only gets enabled

I don't think we need to request a CVE name for this actively. I sincerely
doubt that this tool is distributed outside of Debian, it's only installed
in usr/share but not enabled by default as I understand it, scope is very
limited and issue is not extremely critical.

Let's just leave it at this unless there's some evidence that some other
party needs/wants to fix this too. Afterall, we only need a CVE id to
cross reference across vendors.

cheers,
Thijs

Bug#476899: dpkg: Leaves new conffiles as file.dpkg-new if the conffile is diverted

So yes, the trigger may be called when it is not necessary. But it
will be called again later. So I don't think this is actually a bug
in dpkg.

Let me say this again as there seem to be some common misapprehension
about triggers:
 * A trigger may be invoked spuriously
 * A postinst which is doing trigger processing MUST NOT assume
that all relevant packages are fully installed. During trigger
processing it MAY be the case that some relevant packages are
totally broken - half unpacked, or other bad states.

> In fact, it might simply be wrong to record activation of a file-based
> trigger during unpack when we're speaking of a configuration file!

I agree that it would be better not to activate the trigger at unpack
of a conffile as the activation is unnecessary. This would be an
optimisation which would remove some unnecessary trigger processing.

HOWEVER the unnecessary processing is only saved if it takes place
before the package in question is configured. This should be by far
from the usual case, because trigger processing is supposed to be put
off until as late as possible. It isn't always at the moment because
apt doesn't quite pass dpkg the right options but that is where we
should improve things I think.

In principle it would be possible to make dpkg suppress the trigger
activation in this case. But it would be complicated: at the moment
dpkg activates the trigger as soon as it realises it might be
modifying the file, in an call which essential for other important
behaviours whenever any target filesystem object is accessed. This is
simple and reliable.

The alternative would be to defer the trigger activation during unpack
to later in the complicated `tarobject' function. This would involve
determining in for path through that function whether the trigger
should be activated. This would be possible but nontrivial and
afterwards the code would be such that it would be easy to
accidentally drop the trigger activation for certain cases. That
would lead to very hard to diagose bugs - the trigger processing would
fail to happen in obscure corner cases for reasons which were no
longer evident when the bug is discovered.

So I would think it better not to `improve' dpkg in this way - in the
long term the extra complexity and risk of bugs would outweigh the
benefit of a few fewer trigger runs.

Ian.
