It seems unlikely that this is an infinite loop. mandb simply spawns
manconv for each manual page, and each instance of manconv
(inconveniently) warns about your broken locale settings. Do you have
any reason to believe that the loop is infinite beyond the copious
quantities of output?

In order to check this, I'd need to see the output of 'mandb -dpq' run
as the 'man' user. (You'll need to redirect both stdout and stderr to a
file, and you'll need to compress the output as it will be very large.)

Thanks,

Same here, with the label being "/". :-(

Hm, I don't even get such a message, but simply "mount: No such device"
followed by three "mount: No such file or directory" messages before I
land in busybox.

Shouldn't that be /dev/disk/by-label/\xf2alt-root? Except if you're
using zsh, which will convert \xf2 to /.

perldoc actually runs pod2man in the background, so this is very related
to #480997. I'm looking for a way to get this fixed for Lenny, either
with the separate podlators-perl package (currently only in sid)
or by patching Pod::Man.

A workaround for now is the perldoc '-t' option.

Bug#495411: libtool-doc: info pages not available anymore

Hello,

With libtool-doc from experimental, "info libtool" does not work
anymore. It brings up the shortened manual page instead of the info
pages.

Well... but that currently prevents completing sane-utils upgrade on my
host.

All I see is :

Paramétrage de sane-utils (1.0.19-17) ...
Starting SANE network scanner server:
invoke-rc.d: initscript saned, action "start" failed.
dpkg : erreur de traitement de sane-utils (--configure) :
le sous-processus post-installation script a retourné une erreur de
 sortie d'état 1
Des erreurs ont été rencontrées pendant l'exécution :
  sane-utils

And the only source of debug is syslog, which exhibits the bind problem.

I guess that there's something of magic here for end-users : nothing
changed, and next upgrade breaks.

I think it should be managed somehow to handle the case where there's
inetd to not start it via init.d ?

Thanks in advance.

Bug#495410: xserver-xorg-video-intel: BackingStore vs. acceleration method for i855GM

2008-08-16 Thread Tomas Davidek

Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.3.2-2+lenny1
Severity: important

Hello,
since some time I am observing strange problem in Xorg:
Some "odds" remain on the screen in several applications (mozilla, xdvi,
acroread, ...), that appear:
 - if one tries to select a region (xdvi, acroread)
 - if one clicks a roll-down menu (mozilla) and does not select any
item, e.g.

by clicking outside of the window
It basically means that the respective part of the application window is
not

re-drawn. In all cases, the screen can be restored either by
iconifying/de-iconifying the application window (acroread, xdvi) or by
simply

moving the window in any direction (mozilla).

This behaviour appears since xserver-xorg-core (>= 1.4) with the respective
xserver-xorg-video-intel driver (>= 2:2.2), I tried with current testing,
unstable and even experimental distributions, they all behave in the same
manner.

In the older versions, e.g. in
ii xserver-xorg 1:7.2-5
ii xserver-xorg-core 2:1.3.0.0.dfsg-12lenny2
ii xserver-xorg-input-evdev 1:1.1.5-3
ii xserver-xorg-input-kbd 1:1.2.0-1+1.2.1
ii xserver-xorg-input-mouse 1:1.2.2-1
ii xserver-xorg-input-synaptics 0.14.7~git20070517-2
ii xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.1.0-2
everything works well. This is nice, but prevents me from any further
upgrades.

I've investigated the problem in several Xorg versions and settings, the
problem seems to be in the combination of BackingStore and acceleration
method used by the intel driver. Whereas in the older version (xserver 1.3,
see the installed packages above) intel uses XAA acceleration method, newer
intel drivers use EXA method by default. However, when using XAA method
with
newer drivers, another problem appear in ROOT application
(http://root.cern.ch,

packages are parts of standard debian archives nowadays):
 - the resulting graphics window (so-called TCanvas) does not remember its
content when another window is being moved over. This is exactly why
BackingStore has been developed long time ago, but it does not work
under

   these circumstances.
 - other applications that need BackingStore (e.g. paw, part of cernlib)
work correctly, i.e. the graphics window does remember its content
This feature also makes Xwin quite unsusable.

When comparing the outputs in /var/log/Xorg.0.log, I got impression that
framebuffer compression may play a role. In the old version
(xserver-1.3), the

respective part looks like:

(II) intel(0): [drm] DRM interface version 1.3
(II) intel(0): [drm] created "i915" driver at busid "pci::00:02.0"

Restarting xfce4-panel on my machine will make it work.

Bug#495408: linux-image-2.6-686: Please ship vmlinux

for kernel panic analysis.
Most users don't like rebuild whole kernel themselves, so please ship
vmlinux in linux-image package, it would be very helpful.

Bug#494918: Update bug

2008-08-16 Thread Cristi
hello,

it seems the 'ifconfig' path problem is valid for 'route' command too.
I have a configuration where the server pushes some static routes to the
client upon connecting.
After connecting, the 'route add -net x.y.z.t' command fails ('Linux command
not found') and the routes are not added.
The system is sid/unstable amd54 updated as of 15 August (with the -2
package installed, ifconfig works fine).

I don't know how acpi works, but I doubt that acpi can't display this
information. Wven if this is true, this is no reason to close this report
without justification. If acpi can't display the requested information, it
could print an error. If my system is normal, the acpi manpage should be
changed to explain that acpi will only show thermal information when this is
possible (ideally indicating when this is possible or not).

So, please reopen. Note that this bug persists with Linux 2.6.26.

Bug#495407: pppoe: mlppp support

2008-08-16 Thread supaplex
Package: pppoe
Severity: wishlist

I'm requesting mlppp support be added. Multiple PPPoE connections (to
the same provider) on one or more physical links (eg, multiple DSL
lines). This allows one DSL line to momentairly flap and only suffer
some bandwitdh degregration. This also allows higher total speed
through aggregation at layer2.

Thanks,

I honestly prefer having this behaviour over having yet another option
even it might not be the cleanest solution. I think in practise it works
reasonably well, since every other tool you will give the source package in
question will complain anyway (which the maintainer can of course
work around by changing the distribution manually in the .changes file,
but well...)

How could this help? AVG is running as a daemon here (not started by
amavisd-new) and we are connecting via TCP. So amavisd is not responsible for
the language here.

We can do this of course, but this will change only cases where we call a
commandline client.

no probably about it, in my tests, it definitely solved the issue.

because it uses exec, it gets the proper value for $PPID, which should
be the sshd process used to log in (yes, it's an ugly hack, but that's
how it works for now). at least on lenny.

to reproduce: ssh to the server, with a user with the default shell of
tcsh. run "exec /bin/sh". "echo $PPID". the $PPID is the pid of sshd.

there's definitely resistance to applying any of these patches upstream:

http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_name=20080815201358.GF12833%40ryukin.fglan&forum_name=ltsp-developer

one idea is to actually log in using /bin/sh, so that we can have a
known login shell, as supporting multiple incompatible shell syntaxes is
a rather difficult task...

live well,
  vagrant

Bug#495402: john: Specify minimum password length

2008-08-16 Thread wohler
Package: john
Version: 1.7.2-3~bpo40+1
Severity: wishlist

I've configured PAM to restrict password creation to 8 or more
characters. It would therefore be a good idea to add an option to
throw out passwords that are less than a given number of characters
since it's just a waste of time to try them.

For example, let's say we had:

  Minlength = 8

If we were considering the word "fred" from the wordlist, we'd ignore
"fred", but would accept the mangled "fredfred".

Thanks!

p.s. I suppose for symmetry, we could have a Maxlength option too.

Bug#495394: perl: Install of diffrent versions in parallel alternatives

This is somewhat more complicated than you might expect, given that it
would require not only multiple versions of the Perl package set, but
also of all binary modules and a number of pure Perl modules.

Actually, the solution is that postgresql-plperl-8.1 needs to be
re-built for 5.10.

Some years ago there were multiple Perl packages, with /usr/bin/perl
managed by update-alternatives. There were a number of problems with
this situation, not least of which was that using update-alternatives,
which requires /usr/bin/perl to operate, to manage that same pathname
caused some entertaining failures during upgrades.

Reassigning to postgresql-plperl-8.1.

Bug#495401: john: Add list of modes to configuration

2008-08-16 Thread wohler
Package: john
Version: 1.7.2-3~bpo40+1
Severity: wishlist

I'd like to just run the single and wordlist modes. I think the
simplest and most explicit way to do this is to introduce a "Modes"
option to the configuration file john.conf as well as options to
specify rulesets for each mode. For example:

[Options]
# A comma-separated list of modes to run. Allowed modes include
# Single, Wordlist, Incremental
Modes = Single, Wordlist, Incremental

# A comma-separated list of mangling rules for the Single mode.
Single = Single, MySingleRules

# A comma-separated list of mangling rules for the Wordlist mode.
Wordlist = Wordlist, MyWordlistRules

# A comma-separated list of mangling rules for the Incremental mode.
Incremental = Alpha, Digits, MyCustomRules

With this in place, I would do away with the default of running
through all modes. John would explicitly run the modes in the Modes
option.

I think these changes would make John much easier to understand out of
the box and more flexible as well.

Error occurs on both i386 and AMD64. Using non-free Flash doesn't seem

I'm guessing that the problem is related to the move to libxul and
Iceweasel 3.0, because the error started happening at that time and
occurs whether I use IW or Epiphany-gecko.

Bug#495396: geki2: Background music is garbled after restarting game

2008-08-16 Thread William Steve Applegate
Package: geki2
Version: 2.0.3-7.0trainer1
Severity: minor
Tags: patch upstream

If you return to the opening screen mid-game, the in-game background music loop
does not stop. Starting a new game then causes another music loop to start,
overlaying the first one. E.g., if you play up to the second level, go back to
the opening screen and start a new game, you will hear the first and second
level's music playing simultaneously. The attached patch fixes this by stopping
all music playback when entering the opening screen.

So, I do not seem to be able to reproduce this bug any more. I am totally
confused as to what on Earth is going on. I could swear it didn't work
until I added the patch to deb822.py, and upon testing with different
conditions many times, it appears to work. However, the same code run by
someone else seems intermittent, so perhaps I am being lucky.

Agreed. I was not aware of this PEP.

So, this unicode issue I am experiencing appears to be intermittent, and
unreproducible. Feel free to close this bug.

Thinking again about this, I think it's alsa-related.
The alsa-utils script is not supposed to take so long (net.agent is,
because it has to wait for /etc/init.d/networking).

Not yet. I have another off-BTS report where the problem seems to be
reproducible, and it all indicates a problem where the responses from
the mirror server are assigned to wrong file items (internal file
descriptor objects) during the download. IMHO the package files you
mentioned are similarly named because they have been in the
pipeline at the same time when the problem occured (AFAICS apt sorts
them in alphabetical order).

Unfortunatelly the download flow code is also a little mess and needs a
(carefully done) overhaul which may take some time... and I could not
reproduce the problem here so far.

Eduard.

Bug#495395: Epiphany segfaults consistently when changing the text size in certain websites

2008-08-16 Thread Enrico Zini
Package: epiphany-browser
Version: 2.22.3-1
Severity: serious

Hello,

thanks for maintaining epiphany.

I got a recurring, reproducible segfault when changing the text size.
It does not happen in every website, but for those when it happens, it
happens consistently.

How to reproduce it:

  $ epiphany-browser http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/
Hit ^+ or ^- to change the font size, or choose View/Larger text (or
  Smaller text) -> Segmentation fault

I installed epiphany-browser-dbg to get a stack trace, here it is:

Bug#495394: perl: Install of diffrent versions in parallel alternatives

2008-08-16 Thread Peter Niebling
Package: perl
Version: 5.8.8-12
Severity: wishlist

It should be possible to have different perl versions installed in parallel.

This concerns also perl-base and perl-modules.

Actually, postgresql-plperl-8.1 is going to be removed when upgrading perl to
5.10.
This MUST NOT happen.

The reason:
libperl5.8 depends on perl-base (= 5.8.8-12)
libperl5.10 depends on perl-base (= 5.10.0-13)

The solution:
perl, perl-base and perl-modules (maybe others) should have versioned names and
corresponding metapackages.
The dependencies in other packages have to reflect the changes as well.

There are only a few files under /usr/bin which have to wrappers to
alternatives.

Am i wrong ?

Thx in advance
and for doing a good job on my favorite distribution!

I can't think of that many other devices than /dev/[u]random, which would
fall into this category.

In this case, you've got LDAP (over TLS) providing NSS information, which
udev presumably needs in order to start. This is one of those very low-level
cases. I'm failing to think of any other, non-system type use-cases where
udev would need to create the device. Can you?

Which I really do not want to do, because it opens the way to every
"special" (read: "retarded") application to request that its own device
nodes are manually created to work around some misfeature.
Can you make the case for this situation to be more special than others?

So from my reading of the bug report, there appeared to be a chicken-and-egg
bootstrapping problem, which would be resolved by udev creating /dev/random
(and/or /dev/urandom).

If I've misunderstood something, then my apologies.

Description : A quick, light and effective text replacement tool

ReplaceIt was written as a quick, light and effective replacement to the
combination of sed/awk/grep/head/tail and other such shell utilities, as
well as being quicker in startup (at least) than an equivilant Perl
solution.

ReplaceIt has various rules which can be used to enhance its abilities
when negotiating tricky sections of text, whilst searching for the right
one to replace, these include [ on same line ] string inclusion
dependence, exclusion dependence, pre-existance, post-existance.

NOTE: ReplaceIt is a line-by-line file parser, so, it cannot (at this

Short answer:
Yes, it works.

Even though I'm testing it in a different box (amd64) right now, I can

I did last night (2.6.25-2-486)... it works, as long an I choose the 486
kernel
As I did not remove the 686 version before I updatet I also had the newest 686
kernel (2.6.25-2-686) installed and tried it - same problem, not booting

I installed the 2.6.22 kernel because there was no higher 486 on the
netinstall image (did not activate network connection)

selecting -486 for this vendor-id will probably solve the issue

Bug#495391: gnome-volume-manager: does not start at first login after the boot/reboot

2008-08-16 Thread Mika Hanhijärvi
Package: gnome-volume-manager
Version: 2.22.1-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

gnome-volume-manager does not start, or exits
immediately, at first login to desktop. This happens every time after
you turn power on or reboot. Automounting on desktop ofcourse does not
work, because gnome-volume-manager is not running. If you logout from
desktop and then re-login then gnome-volume-manager starts and
automounting works just fine.

I did some testing like this too:
1) I disabled autostarting of
gnome-volume-manager from session settings
(System->preferences->Sessions).
2) I rebooted and logged in to desktop.
3) I tried to start gnome-volume-manager from terminal window.

I got exactly the same result. Gnome-volume-manager does not
start no matter how many times you try to run it from commandline. I
did use exactly the same command as which is in session settings.
If I then logout and re-login then gnome-volume-manager starts
from commandline and automounting then works.

Can we have something in the initscript forcing LANG and LC_ALL to "C" right

If we don't add it before lenny ships, it will be a major pain...

Bug#462001: Possible solution for kde-style-qtcurve FTBFS

2008-08-16 Thread Jurij Smakov
Hi Martin,

Can you please try building kde-style-qtcurve on the buildd with
attached patch? As (another) Martin pointed out, it might be related
to the fact that $HOME is not properly set on buildd, and the code
tries to create $HOME/.qt directory during the build, which fails.
The patch simply sets HOME to tmp in the current (build) directory.
I verified building it in a chroot, but buildd environment is probably
slightly different.

Cheer.

I would instead suggest:

Please specify the workgroup for your system. This setting controls which
workgroup your system will appear in when used as a server, the default
workgroup to be used when browsing with various frontends, and the domain
name used with the security=domain setting.

since "appearing" in a workgroup is something that only happens to servers.

I think this is cumbersome, and would prefer that we pick one name (SMB or
CIFS) to use when referring to the protocol.

Well, I guess this is all for post-lenny anyway, right? I don't think I
object to discontinuing support for plaintext passwords after lenny, given
that even samba in lenny will not act as a plaintext client without an
override.

Bug#495390: include ggobi manual

2008-08-16 Thread James R. Van Zandt
Package: ggobi
Version: 2.1.4-2
Severity: wishlist

I would be nice if you downloaded the PDF manual from
http://www.ggobi.org/docs/, installed it to /usr/share/doc/ggobi, and
registered it via doc-base. I suggest section "Science/Data
Analysis".

(I see version 2.1.4 shipped with sources for the manual, but I
couldn't get it to build. There was an extra "cd " on the first line,
then several style files were missing, then it used an undefined
command "\pdfimage".)

If there's some problem with shipping the .pdf file (if it doesn't
meet the DFSG), I suggest at least mentioning it in a README.Debian
file. You might also think about installing and registering a .html
file, which consists mainly of a link to

http://www.ggobi.org/docs/manual.pdf

Bug#495388: zhone-session: self.evas_obj.evas seems to be of NoneType, leads to crash on zhone startup

2008-08-16 Thread Marcel
Package: zhone-session
Version: 0.2
Severity: important

This happened on a virgin installation (Neo Freerunner) after I played around a
bit with suspend, which
was semi-successful but probably is another bug. The next real boot (since the
system didn't respond
after resuming) zhone-session produced this trace:

That makes sense, but I guess for some reason on my system the
installation didn't work correctly. I removed my /etc/R/Renviron
symlink and ran dpkg-reconfigure r-base-core and it seemed to work
fine this time, so I don't know what happened.

Thanks for your help,

Could you check your dest/MANIFEST.udebs file to see which version of

No, that should work at all times, esp from a fresh installation. ucf is a
Debian package that is managing config file transitions between versions of a
Debian package and possible user changes.

The way this is supposed to happen is that at postinst time (when the .deb
gets unpacked) your papersize info is integrated and written into
/etc/R/Renviron. However, that file is for your convenience, what R uses is
/usr/lib/R/etc/Renviron --- and this should be a symlink to /etc/R/Renviron.

Makes sense?

Could you please test something for me:
- get the sources of python-pyicu and build and install the package from
them (for example: apt-get -b source python-pyicu; dpkg -i
python-pyicu*.deb)

- try to build parsedatetime again

And see if it works.

Thanks,

From what I have read in this thread, the -486 flavour of 2.6.25
(testing) or 2.6.26 (unstable) should work. Could you please try to
install them on a running system and tell us if they works?

In that case, we probably need to select -486 on all CPU which have
CentaurHauls as vendor_id.

Bug#495386: ITP: compcache -- creates RAM based block devices to act as swap disks

2008-08-16 Thread Daniel Baumann
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: compcache
  Version : 0.4
  Upstream Author : Nitin Gupta
* URL : http://code.google.com/p/compcache/
* License : GPL-2
  Programming Lang: C and Shell
Description : creates RAM based block devices to act as swap disks

This project creates RAM based block device (named ramzswap) which acts
as swap disk. Pages swapped to this disk are compressed and stored in
memory itself.

Compressing pages and keeping them in RAM virtually increases its
capacity. This allows more applications to fit in given amount of
memory. This is especially useful for:

* Embedded Devices: Memory is scarce and adding more memory
increases device cost. Also, flash storage suffers from wear-leveling
issues, so its useful if we can avoid using them as swap device.

* Small Desktops (aka Virtual Machines!): De/Compression is much
faster than swapping to disks (include seek times!). Of course, you also
get to run VMs with much less RAM assigned. Total memory savings from
individual VMs can be quite significant if multiple VMs are hosted.

* LiveCDs : These typically do not have any disk swap configured.

Regards,
Daniel

Bug#495384: network-manager-gnome: sometimes waits indefinitely for "network key" until one removes wireless entry

2008-08-16 Thread Mikhail Ramendik
Package: network-manager-gnome
Version: 0.6.6-2
Severity: important

In my setup, there is one wireless network with WPA-Personal authorization and
a password. This network is saved
in the wireless networks list of gnome network manager (nm-applet, started
under icewm).

Most of the time it connects fine. But occasionally, it will fail to
autoconnect. Then when I try to connect
manually, it shows the "connecting" state and never connects. The mouse-over
hint says "waiting for network key".
Trying again, or rebooting, does not fix the issue - it still can not connect.

If I go into the network list, remove the network, reboot, and try again, it
connects fine - and will work again
for some time, intil the next similar failure.

2008-08-16 Thread Filipus Klutiero
Package: xserver-xorg-video-nv
Version: 1:2.1.10-1
Severity: normal

I got a complete machine crash when shutting down KDE, when kdm should have
showed. I was able to reproduce this every time I tried on this install. I'm
able to reproduce on other lenny installs on the same machine. I'm able to
reproduce with all versions supporting my card I tried, going back as far as
2.1.3. The machine stops responding to pings. Ctrl+Alt+Del (or maybe pressing
some other keys) can cause the machine to reboot after a few seconds. This
also happens with GNOME instead of KDE and xdm instead of kdm. This does not
happen when not using a display manager.

I was unable to reproduce with other GNU/Linux distributions. I tried Mandriva
Linux, Fedora and PCLinuxOS, using versions 2.1.8 and 2.1.10. I'm therefore
not sure that this is an upstream bug, but it does look like
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15238
I didn't feel like installing Slackware to try reproducing though. The only
difference is that the screen is different. I get a mostly black screen
except for 2 incomplete lines with text characters. At least one of those
lines flashes.

This machine uses VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GeForce 8600M
GT (rev a1). This uses the NB8P chipset. I was unable to reproduce on 1 other
machine I tried, although the card is very different (GeForce 4). I have no
similar card to try reproducing. I was unable to reproduce with the vesa and
nvidia drivers.

Bug#352616: ITA: libpalm-perl -- Perl 5 modules for manipulating pdb and prc database files

2008-08-16 Thread Tim Retout
retitle 352616 ITA: libpalm-perl -- Perl 5 modules for manipulating pdb and prc
database files
owner 352616 !
kthxbye

This package has a reasonable popcon and a few rdepends, so it is
probably worth adopting as part of pkg-perl. I've got a Palm V lying
around somewhere at home. :)

There is a new upstream version (and new upstream) available at:
http://search.cpan.org/dist/p5-Palm/ - I haven't checked that it's
completely backwards-compatible, but I assume so.

The new versioning style may require adding an epoch... or should the
package really be called 'libp5-palm-perl'?

Bug#490897: tcsh logins

Sorry, I was referring to the 2.0.9 based patch i had been testing and
working on which I felt needed more testing before applying upstream
since it didn't seem to solve the logout problem.

Ok, I did some testing with the patch you had attached. What I found
though was that starting up a new shell on the server just for killing
$PPID would probably not solve the issue since that would just kill
the calling shell and not the ssh process which I believe is what the
intent is here. I'm referring to this portion of the patch.

 cmd[i++] = ";";
+cmd[i++] = "exec";
+cmd[i++] = "sh";
 cmd[i++] = "kill";
 cmd[i++] = "-1";
 cmd[i++] = "$PPID";

What is needed is a more portable way to find the parent process id in
a manner that is not shell dependent and that will find the process id
of the calling ssh process. I worked on that for a while, and the
following seems to do the trick in a shell portable way:

ps -o ppid -p $$ | tail -1

I put that into a 2.0.6 based patch which looks like this:

I tried logging in and out with bash, tcsh, dash and zsh using gnome,
xfce4 and icewm sessions on the server. All those combinations worked
well in my case (server running etch).

I hope that helps!

Bug#495357: debian-installer: installation method selection does not work

unfortunately, vesamenu is known to be less compatible (or even not
working at all) on some specific graphic adapters, compared to the
normal syslinux.

i hope this was considered when it was decided that the vesamenu will be
default. there is not much we can do here.

Bug#495380: unionfs-fuse: cow fails to create directories

2008-08-16 Thread Bernd Schubert
Oops, somehow deleted the bug descripton when I submitted the bug.

Last week a user reported on the mailing list that creating new files will
fail the the writable branch doesn't have the directory path. So clearly a
copy-on-write bug. I already submitted patch to the upstream repository:

A solution to avoid disabling components during upgrade should be
add preinst to verify if it's an upgrade from version lesser than
3.2.1+debian0-2. If it's the case, we compare md5sum of
/etc/horde/horde3/registry.php and original one[*]: if
registry.php file is not modified, we add a new empty line to be
sure to have the hey-modified-conffile-question...
It's *very* hacky then I request your opinion :-)

[*] Example here http://wiki.debian.org/DpkgConffileHandling
