Nevertheless, this bug /is/ fixed in the package, so your problem lies somewhere else. Have you ever installed a local copy of cups? What does ldd /usr/sbin/cupsd show? Chances are good that it shows a local copy of libcups somewhere. -- Steve Langasek Give me a lever long enough and a Free OS Debian Developer to set it on, and I can move the world. Bug#457341: Experiencing this on a broader scale
Hello, I'm trying to do essentially the same - I have clients using subversion, trac, and other dev tools auth against an htpasswd database. I'm moving their system and other accounts to LDAP + KRB5, but I don't want to force a switch on them for subversion overnight, as it may take a while to get everyone's accounts set up. All I want is to fallback against Basic on any failure, but it seems as if the AuthType nearest the Require valid-user is the only one working. My userids are clear with no email / realm style @domain.com, but I wonder if perhaps this is undefined behaviour in Apache where a userid exists in both databases or somesuch.. I'd love to help fix this if someone could extend a bit of guidance, and try to help fix the originally reported problem, too. Best and TIA! Bug#494168: Interesting tidbit.
I discovered something interesting. If, the first thing I do after logging in (before starting the X server), I run "/etc/init.d/cups restart", cups works fine. From what I've tested at least. Running this command from within xorg, it goes back to it's buggy behavior. It is something like this: 1) Boot computer 2) Log in as root 2a) ps -A | grep cups (cupsd is running) 3) /etc/init.d/cups restart 4) Log back out 5) Log in as regular user (wk) 6) Start X server (startx) 7) lpstat as many times as I want. No crashes 8) Log in as root in other terminal 9) As root, /etc/init.d/cups restart 10) In regular user terminal, run lpstat twice more 11) And cupsd crashes again. Interesting that xorg would have an affect on cupsd. Also, cupsd and lpstat behaves the same way if I never run the X server in the first place. 1) Boot computer 2) Log in as root 3) lpstat twice and crash 1) Boot computer 2) Log in as root 3) /etc/init.d/cups restart 4) lpstat as many times as I want. No crashes. So what I get from this, is that any cupsd that is started by init scripts, or that is started from within xorg, will crash. But any time that I start it manually, but outside of xorg, it will not crash. -Brandon signature.asc Description: PGP signature
Bug#497965: aptitude: [INTL:nl] Dutch translation update
Quoting Jens Seidel ([EMAIL PROTECTED]): > I'm very very sure that I needed much longer dealing with this bug > report than you needed to touch three small strings. Please consider > sending larger updates. Only 40 strings are missing, the avarage string > length is three lines. Well, I think that *sometimes* spending a lot of time on small updates happens to be part of the l10n coordination work. Frans, maybe someone else from the Dutch l10n team would volunteer to complete the file? That would only need you to quickly review his|her updates to check they're inline with your translation style, which would anyway save you some work. Just a proposal, indeed. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

I'm surprised you got it to do anything. To me that says: "remove all the packages your are removing" -- i.e., do nothing. Bug#498001: xscreensaver completely fails to work after resizing display with xrandr
Package: xscreensaver Version: 5.05-3 Severity: important At certain times when the screen is resized, xscreensaver gets confused, and subsequently fails to blank the screen. Specifically, this happens when changing from 640x480 to 1280x1024. For example, if I run xrandr -s 640x480 xrandr -s 1280x1024 xscreensaver-command -activate xscreensaver "fades" the screen out as expected, but after doing this, rather than showing a screensaver or a blank screen, it simply goes back to showing the existing windows. Furthermore, if I lock the screen at this point with 'xscreensaver-command -lock', the screen is locked, but still no screensaver is displayed. In fact the password-entry dialog box appears -- over my existing windows -- in the upper left corner of the screen rather than in the center, as if xscreensaver believes the screen is still 640x480. The strange thing is that this only seems to happen after switching from 640x480 to 1280x1024. If I switch to 640x480 and activate the screensaver, it works fine. If I switch from 1280x1024 to 640x480, then to 800x600, then back to 1280x1024, it works fine. When switching from 640x480 to 1280x1024, though, this problem occurs every time. Restarting xscreensaver, or switching to (say) 800x600 and back, fixes the problem. This is obviously a serious problem for any user who is relying on xscreensaver for security, not to mention those who rely on it to protect their CRTs. If it makes any difference, I'm using a fairly new Radeon video card (RV635) which still doesn't have great support from the free-software drivers; this problem occurs with both the radeon and radeonhd drivers. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.26-1-amd64 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages xscreensaver depends on: ii libatk1.0-01.22.0-1 The ATK accessibility toolkit ii libc6 2.7-13GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libcairo2 1.6.4-6 The Cairo 2D vector graphics libra ii libglade2-01:2.6.2-1 library to load .glade files at ru ii libglib2.0-0 2.16.4-2 The GLib library of C routines ii libgtk2.0-02.12.11-3 The GTK+ graphical user interface ii libice62:1.0.4-1 X11 Inter-Client Exchange library ii libpam0g 1.0.1-4+b1Pluggable Authentication Modules l ii libpango1.0-0 1.20.5-1 Layout and rendering of internatio ii libsm6 2:1.0.3-2 X11 Session Management library ii libx11-6 2:1.1.4-2 X11 client-side library ii libxext6 2:1.0.4-1 X11 miscellaneous extension librar ii libxinerama1 2:1.0.3-2 X11 Xinerama extension library ii libxml22.6.32.dfsg-3 GNOME XML library ii libxmu62:1.0.4-1 X11 miscellaneous utility library ii libxpm41:3.5.7-1 X11 pixmap library ii libxrandr2 2:1.2.3-1 X11 RandR extension library ii libxrender11:0.9.4-2 X Rendering Extension client libra ii libxt6 1:1.0.5-3 X11 toolkit intrinsics library ii libxxf86misc1 1:1.0.1-3 X11 XFree86 miscellaneous extensio ii libxxf86vm11:1.0.2-1 X11 XFree86 video mode extension l ii xscreensaver-data 5.05-3data files to be shared among scre Versions of packages xscreensaver recommends: ii libjpeg-progs 6b-14 Programs for manipulating JPEG fil ii perl [perl5] 5.10.0-13 Larry Wall's Practical Extraction ii wamerican [wordlist] 6-2.3 American English dictionary words ii xli1.17.0+20061110-2 command line tool for viewing imag Versions of packages xscreensaver suggests: ii dillo [www-browser]0.8.6-3 Small and fast web browser ii elinks [www-browser] 0.11.4-2 advanced text-mode WWW browser ii epiphany-gecko [www-browse 2.22.3-1 Intuitive GNOME web browser - Geck ii fortune-mod [fortune] 1:1.99.1-3.1 provides fortune cookies on demand ii iceape-browser [www-browse 1.1.11-1 Iceape Navigator (Internet browser ii iceweasel [www-browser]3.0.1-1 lightweight web browser based on M ii links2 [www-browser] 2.1pre37-1.1 Web browser running in both graphi ii lynx-cur [www-browser] 2.8.7dev9-1.2 Text-mode WWW Browser with NLS sup pn qcam | streamer(no description available) ii w3m [www-browser] 0.5.2-2+b1WWW browsable pager with excellent pn xdaliclock (no description available) pn xfishtank (no description available) ii xscreensave

Bug#498000: emacspeak: Remove indirect "Depends" on emacs21
Package: emacspeak Version: 28.0-1 Severity: normal Please consider removing "w3-el-e21" from the Depends field of the "emacspeak" package. The "w3-el-e21" package by itself pulls in emacs21, which negates (or cancels) the benefit of listing the "emacs" metapackage as an alternative dependency to "emacs21" (i.e. "emacs | emacs21"): Depends: emacs | emacs21, emacsen-common, make, perl-5.6 | perl, tcl8.4, tclx8.4, w3-el-e21 I suggest reducing the "w3-el-e21" package from "Depends" to a "Suggests" or "Recommends" to reduce the number of packages necessary to install "emacspeak". However, if emacs21 is REALLY necessary to run emacspeak then it should be stated in the Depends field by removing the "emacs" metapackage since w3-el-e21 is only useful for emacs21. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (900, 'testing'), (90, 'unstable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.26-1-amd64 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_SG.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_SG.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/zsh -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#497832: gdm launches gnome-settings-daemon in xfce4 session

All I know is I installed gdm and xfce and couldn't start xfce. I tracked it down to gnome-settings-daemon being started, which prevents xfce4-mcs-manager from starting even though it is an xfce session. Perhaps gnome-session is being started which starts gnome-settings-daemon, but the point remains if gnome-session and gnome-settings-daemon are installed I can't start an xfce session (and since I don't install gnome they are only being installed because of a bug in aptitude, but that's a separate issue, described in the clone of this report). Perhaps gdm is starting gnome-session but shouldn't be because I want xfce. Either way there is a grave bug because it means that users of XFCE4 can't install and use xfce simply by selecting the task that is for that purpose. It also means that one cannot run xfce and gnome side-by-side. Regards, Daniel -- And that's my crabbing done for the day. > Some of these changes look substantial - do we have any > bug reports that indicate that distributing 2.8. > 6 is a bad idea? Agreed. From all accounts 2.8.6 is running well across debian. The only reason to upgrade lenny to 2.8.6.b is because upstream have asked generally that 2.8.6 not be distributed as they released some early code that they then took out in 2.8.6.b. Functionally the two versions are supposed to be identical. Upstream has put additional functionality into 2.8.7. But we are not considering that for lenny and I probably won't package 2.8.7 until we resolve lenny. As far as I know this definitely is a lenny issue as well. I'll try to build the FAI package in a minimalist chroot this evening, unless someone else manages to do so earlier (appreciated :-) ). I tested this in my normal (pretty dirty) lenny and sid i386 chroots and in a clean sid amd64 pbuiler. In all cases it failed to build if texlive-fonts-extra was not installed and built fine if it was installed. btw lucas your bugreport contradicts itself, the bug title and the main bulk of the bug report talks about a FTBFS in lenny but then the "about the archive rebuild" section says it was done in a sid chroot. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". The problem is that you can't run "git diff --cached" on a repository with no commits in it. The patch I've included does a show-ref test on HEAD before trying to diff, and if it fails it just takes the entire debian/changelog by diffing it with /dev/null :-) Now, I'll be honest and say that I'm not sure that this works in every scenario, just the ones I've tested. I've made a posting to the git mailing list about the test's effectivness, and I will post any additional information I get as soon as I get it, so if you want to delay this until then that's fine by me. The attached > patch should do that. Oh, wow! Yes! Let's make a change that's really dmraid upstream's business in Debian only. Let's do it at this stage of the release cycle, *and* let's do it without giving *any* thought to issues it might cause for existing dmraid users who upgrade from Etch to Lenny. Not to mention that this would require also updating partman-dmraid, grub-installer and maybe hw-detect. Sounds like an excellent plan Otavio, really. The fact is that parted changed, and apparently did so without any coordination with dmraid developers (and I also wonder about other devicemapper usages). Even if it's theoretically an improvement, such uncoordinated changes are called "regressions" as they tend to break existing software/systems. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#497984: e2fsprogs: better support for loopbacks
Package: e2fsprogs Version: 1.41.0-3 Severity: normal Is it possible to add better support for loopbacks? Meaning, figure out which is the real file/device the loopback is using? I accidentally had a fs mounted via one loopback, then using a different loopback on the same device ran fsck, and then resize2fs (to make it larger). The fsck told me: ext3 recovery flag is clear, but journal has data. Run journal anyway? I told it no, and then had it clear the journal. I then ran resize2fs and mounted it, and only then realized I had it mounted already! (Note that I did not write anything whatsoever on the mounted fs, just whatever mount does on it's own.) I unmounted both and ran fsck again and it found: Block bitmap differences (about 20 of them), and then Free blocks count wrong again about 20. Otherwise everything seem OK, but is it possible some file got currupted and I would not know? So my first question is: Is everything actually OK? I have a backup of the entire fs, but it would be a huge amount of work to get it (the backup is in the form of unused area on an lvm, I moved all the data to a new hard disk, but the old is still sitting there in 3 pieces - if I can figure out the offsets and stich it back together). And my second question, which is actually the bugreport, is can you do the equivalent of: losetup -a And use both the base device/file, along with the loopback one to detect if it's mounted already? (That way if two loopbacks are using the same device it'll detect it.) And, BTW: loopbacks don't seem to support fsync, because when fsck.ext3 -D, or resize2fs finsish, I ran sync and it worked for a good minute or two. Can you run a prophylactic sync after those tools, just in case? Or perhaps just for loopback devices? Bug#497983: apt-transport-https: Timeout incorrectly applied to Curl in https method
Package: apt-transport-https Version: 0.7.14+b1 Severity: important Tags: patch *** Please type your report below this line *** apt-transport-https incorrectly applies the connection timeout, specified as Acquire::http::Timeout, to CURLOPT_TIMEOUT and CURLOPT_CONNECTTIMEOUT. The 'http' method correctly applies the timeout to only the initial connection whereas apt-transport-https is applying the same timeout to both the initial connection and the life of the connection itself. Upon reaching this timeout, Curl immediately terminates the connection, including active ones. This results in large packages (such as kernels) being downloaded over slow internet connections being unobtainable via apt. The recommended solution should be to avoid setting CURLOPT_TIMEOUT. Some apache child processes may hang on reload. After many reloads, you may run into the max number of apache childs or exhaust your server's memory. The problem affects prefork and itk MPMs, but only if you use more than one listening socket. If you only listen on port 80, you should be safe. If you are affected, a possible workaround may be to kill all apache child processes with "pkill -u www-data apache2" some time after the reload. But I haven't tried this. Bug#497978: install built-in Help
You are aware that clicking "Contents" in the "Help" menu opens up the online Transmission documentation[0] in your browser, right? That means it's not "coming up empty", it just doesn't exist in the source package at all. If you're not seeing it, there may be some sort of misconfiguration of your browser. I find it highly unlikely to be a bug in transmission, since it uses default gnome APIs for opening that URL. If it's not working, none of your other gnome apps should be able to open URLs, but that's beyond the point... What do you mean with "it comes empty only in debian"? What do the other distros distribute as packaged help for Transmission, since upstream themselves don't distribute any? Or did you just say that to try and make a point, even thought you hadn't actually checked any other distro? If that's the case I'd advise you to change your strategy. You'll get a lot more cooperation from us volunteers if you avoid making statements that sound like "pointing fingers". Could you please check whether the packages below solve > your issues? > http://people.debian.org/~thijs/ The package works for me with one change to config.php: dbconfig-common leaves the $dbhost blank by default (not filled with `localhost'). I'm not sure how to set up ident-based authentication with dbconfig-common (which would be used when $dbhost == ""): this would require changing the user name used to connect to Postgres. So I could not test if this would still work, but I think it would still work if $dbhost is set to the socket name. If users want to configure ident-based auth, they might be confused by the fact that phpbb3 silently changes the $dbhost variable. I also noticed that dbconfig-common mentions that changes to Postgres' authentication setup might be required, so I think it would be ok to leave this change out. But having a solution that works out-of-the-box is very nice as well... If I have vncviewer open, and the remote desktop has epiphany or pidgin (or presumably, other gnome/gtk apps) open, a the text input area *focused* (ie, I've been remotely typing in it), and I close vncviewer in this latter way, an odd thing happens to the remote desktop. Typing on that machine's keyboard no longer works in any gnome/gtk apps. All keystrokes are dropped. I can, however, open gnome-terminal and type in that, also typing in openoffice writer's main input area works. (Neither of those apps is using a standard gtk/gnome edit widget, I think..) The only way I've found to recover is log out and back in. Perhaps this is a vino or gnome or even gtk bug? I don't know, but something is badly wrong if killing the vnc viewer can permanantly mess up the keyboard in gnome. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.26-1-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages xvnc4viewer depends on: ii libc6 2.7-13GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libgcc11:4.3.1-9 GCC support library ii libice62:1.0.4-1 X11 Inter-Client Exchange library ii libsm6 2:1.0.3-2 X11 Session Management library ii libstdc++6 4.3.1-9 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libx11-6 2:1.1.4-2 X11 client-side library ii libxext6 2:1.0.4-1 X11 miscellaneous extension librar ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3.3.dfsg-12 compression library - runtime xvnc4viewer recommends no packages. xvnc4viewer suggests no packages. -- no debconf information -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#489957: Why not move /etc/apache2/envvars to /etc/default/apache2 ?

The idea was to be able to run several instances of apache2. Then /etc/apache2/envvars would contain per instance settings and /etc/default/apache2 would contain global settings. Unfortunately, the support for several instances was not finished in time for lenny, but hopefully it will be in lenny+1.
