Bug#484686: Announce of the upcoming NMU for the scponly package

2008-09-13 Thread Christian Perrier
Dear maintainer of scponly and Debian translators,

Some days ago, I sent a notice to the maintainer of the scponly Debian
package, mentioning the status of at least one old po-debconf translation
update in the BTS.

I announced the intent to build and possibly upload a non-maintainer upload
for this package in order to fix this long-time pending localization
bug as well as all other pending translations.

The package maintainer agreed for the NMU or did not respond in two
weeks, so I will proceed with the NMU.

The full planned schedule is available at the end of this mail.

The package is currently translated to:
cs de eu fi fr gl it ja nl pt pt_BR ru sv tr vi

Among these, the following translations are incomplete:

If you did any of the, currently incomplete, translations you will get
ANOTHER mail with the translation to update.

Other translators also have the opportunity to create new translations
for this package. Once completed, please send them as a bug report
against the scponly package so I can incorporate them in the build.

The deadline for receiving updates and new translations is Saturday, September
20, 2008. If you
are not in time you can always send your translation to the BTS.

The POT file is attached to this mail.

If the maintainer objects to this process I will immediately abort my NMU
and send him/her all updates I receive.

Otherwise the following will happen (or already has):

Tuesday, September 09, 2008 : send the first intent to NMU notice to
 the package maintainer.
Sunday, September 14, 2008 : send this notice
Saturday, September 20, 2008 : (midnight) deadline for receiving
translation updates
Sunday, September 21, 2008 : build the package and upload it to
DELAYED/2-day
send the NMU patch to the BTS
Tuesday, September 23, 2008 : NMU uploaded to incoming

Thanks for your efforts and time.

I know. And this is true. It can't be checked. So I don't see a reason to

Bug#498885: perl: should provide libsys-syslog-perl

2008-09-13 Thread Niko Tyni
Package: perl
Version: 5.10.0-13
Severity: normal

There's a separate libsys-syslog-perl package in the archive (version 0.26),
overriding the Sys::Syslog module in the perl package (version 0.22).

The only reverse dependencies are:

Package: liblogger-syslog-perl
Depends: libsys-syslog-perl

Package: mailscanner
Depends: libsys-syslog-perl (>= 0.18)

Package: policyd-weight
Recommends: libsys-syslog-perl

Package: ps-watcher
Recommends: libsys-syslog-perl

Package: spamassassin
Recommends: libsys-syslog-perl

Package: postgrey
Conflicts: libsys-syslog-perl (<< 0.21)

so nobody seems to actually require the newer version for anything.
Adding a Provides: entry in perl and fixing the versioned dependency in
mailscanner would even enable removal of the separate package.

There's an annoying bug in 0.19..0.24 that should be fixed in the
core version, though. See #498776.

Of course I don't object at all and the point of the "intent to NMU"
mail is *first* to set a schedule as well as give a very last chance
to translators.

So, I'll launch the call for translations now, with a 7-day delay for
translators. Then, I'll send you a summary with a patch, leaving up to
you to upload.

Thanks for the report. This is [rt.perl.org #54758], fixed upstream with
the attached patch.

Perl crashes have classically been considered 'important', and this is a
regression from 5.8, so raising the severity.

Bug#498721: Please hint to unblock xorg-docs 1:1.4-3 (clarification)

2008-09-13 Thread Osamu Aoki
Hi,

Please add unblock hint to xorg-docs 1.4-3.

It fixes bug http://bugs.debian.org/498721 by adding symlink and leads
people from /usr/share/doc/xorg-docs to the actual documentation. No
other changes thus should be OK to be hinted for inclusion.

This should help many uses for looking for key documentation.

I know it is not perfect fix which requires its maintainer to create
debian/xorg-docs.doc-base file as documentaed in dh_installdocs(1).

But this fix certainly closes major gap.

Osamu

Bug#498883: Please add support for overridable tags

2008-09-13 Thread Raphael Geissert
Package: lintian
Version: 1.24.4
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

The attached patch adds support for "overridable" tags.
Any value in the .desc files can be overriden if the lowercase name is in its
corresponding Overridable field.

Example:

in .desc:
Tag: test-tag
Type: warning
Severity: normal
Certainty: certain
Overridable: severity
Info: foo bar moo

in script:

if ( it is annoying to have it where it is) {
tag 'test-tag', "$file:$.";
} elsif (not so annoying, thereby lintian shouldn't be so pedantic) {
ctag 'test-tag', "$file:$.", (severity => 'minor');
} elsif (this is serious) {
ctag 'test-tag', "$file:$.", (severity => 'serious');
}

lintian-info isn't very easy to hack to add my idea of displaying that the
severity, certainty, or experimental is the _default_ value, may give it a
try tomorrow.

I wanted this feature to be added before the 2.0.0 upload, but Frank did it
right while I was fixing some bugs :-/.

Let the fun begin.

Cheers,

Bug#498672: workaround

2008-09-13 Thread cfeller
Just ran into the identical problem w/ a fresh lenny install. Was able
to work around the problem by manually setting the password from w/in
mysql.

Go into mysql as root, you should see the there is a bugzilla3 user,
just set the password that is set in /etc/bugzilla3/dbconfig-params for
bugzilla3, then rerun apt-get install bugzilla3.

This proved to be a sufficient workaround for the above problem. I did
however have to manually configure apache to use the bugzilla3
directories...

Bug#498880: apt-get installs unneeded extra packages

2008-09-13 Thread Olaf Mandel

Installing a package selects numerous additional packages for

mount -tproc proc /mnt/proc
chroot /mnt

Please write a proper description instead of just putting many unlinked
sentences together; it is difficult to read the way it is.

Could you please put this *important* bit in a separate paragraph? thanks

> You need at least the RTL

And why is this needed? Does that mean that the Depends isn't enough? or why
is it relevant?

Oh, and even though I have no idea about how free pascal works, this distrubs
me (is there any real need for an internal compiler instead of the one
provided by fp-compiler):

Thanks.

Bug#498881: apt-get changes extended_states even during simulated operations

2008-09-13 Thread Olaf Mandel
Package: apt
Version: 0.7.14+b1
Severity: normal

Calling apt-get --simulate install [...] changes the file
/var/lib/apt/extended_states . I tried this on several machines (amd64,
i386), in "normal" conditions and inside chroots.

This can be bad if someone install package A, which causes package B to
be autoinstalled and then simulates installing package B. In this case,
extended_states shows package B to not have been autoinstalled, which
would result in package B not being affected by an autoremove command.

Comments/Problems:

I did a previous install using ext3 as the filesystem for /, choose
Base system plus Desktop tasks and everything went well. Later, I wanted
to test if LILO was still working in d-i.

I do not use LILO personally, but as I probably will use XFS for some
future projects, I wanted to know how well supported under d-i it was.
The installer correctly detected I picked XFS for / and opted to install
LILO instead of GRUB.

However, after selecting to install it on the virtual disk MBR
(/dev/vda, the virtual disk used by KVM), the installer presented me
with a red screen saying that lilo-installer exited with code 1 and exited.

I the saved the logs using the proper main-menu entry for that option
(saving logs) and I'm attaching them to this message, gziped as requested.

Let me know if I can be of any help. This is reproducible, as the
first time I see that I did an install using Brazilian Portuguese as a
language. I did another one using English as the language (so the logs
wouldn't be "poluted" for non-Brazilian-Portuguese speaking debuggers)
and the same error happened.

Regards,

That does not warrant a versioned dependency, so I will not add that.
Dependencies should only come from the requirements of this package, not
problems in other packages.

Hi all,

Tag: version-refers-to-distribution
Type: warning
Severity: minor
Certainty: certain
Info: The latest changelog version appears to mention the name of one of the
distributions. Unless this portion of the version is part of upstream
it should be removed. This warning may also appear if an upload for a
specific distribution was intended but the distribution value on the
changelog
 was not changed.

Cheers,

Bug#498878: [nvidia-graphics-drivers] Please package 177beta for experimental (fix issues for 8xxx/9xxx)

2008-09-13 Thread Adam Cécile (Le_Vert)

Package: nvidia-graphics-drivers
Severity: wishlist

Hello,

Could you please upload this new upstream release to experimental ?
GeForce 8xxx and 9xxx are unusable due to painfully slow 2D performance
with current drivers.

Thanks in advance,

Adam.

I'd be happy if there'd be a --missing-ok switch that I could use in the
cron job. I guess many (personal) repositories are bound not to have
Contents.gz files.

Well, the problem is that the discussion of the PHP licences is spread in
several threads all around -legal. But it is probably better to just
paraphrase the tag and description (as it is not suitable at all for
anything by PHP itself, and even in that case there are some issues because
of the Zend engine). The whole thing is a nightmare :-/.

Or what's the ftp-masters opinion?

Bug#495789: Patch

I think the attached patch should fix this issue in a very minimal
way. A real fix would probably require improving upstream's configure
script to not be so eager to add rpaths.

Bug#398079: linux-uvc depends

2008-09-13 Thread Matt Taggart
Regarding module package Depends/Recommends

Here is what _all_ prebuilt -modules packages in unstable do:
depend on linux-modules of the same kernel rev, provide the name as listed
below, and have no other depends/recommends/suggests.

squashfs-modules
fglrx-modules
speakup-modules
virtualbox-ose-modules
redhat-cluster-modules
tp-smapi-modules
lzma-modules
loop-aes-modules
atl2-modules
gspca-modules
drbd8-modules
btrfs-modules
eeepc-acpi-modules
iscsitarget-modules
rt73-modules
aufs-modules
nilfs2-modules

I did not check what module source packages that don't have built modules
packages in the archive do.

Currently linux-uvc has been removed from unstable/testing, but as I argue
in #493259 there is still value in having this package available and I am
hoping it can go back in the archive and this bug fixed.

Thanks,

Package: ucspi-tcp-src
Severity: grave

Hi,

while checking whether bug #174353 "build-ucspi-tcp fails on libc6
2.3.1-7" is still present and if it is release critical - more
precisely, before I had the chance to do so, I tried to build
ucspi-tcp-src using debuild -rfakeroot which failed.

Since ucspi-tcp is now available in main, maintained by Gerrit Pape, do
you think ucspi-tcp-src is still useful in Debian?

I see two options:

a) Remove ucspi-tcp-src from Debian.
b) Fix this bug, then check if #174353 is still present, if it is,
upgrade its severity to grave and fix this too. Users could decide
oneself whether they want a precompiled package or your package which
   they might use since ages.

The output of the failed debuild is:

2008-09-13 Thread Carsten Hey

Bug#452633: building linux-uvc on etch

2008-09-13 Thread Matt Taggart
Hi,

I also tried to build a linux-uvc-source from unstable (0.1.0.svn238-1)
using module-assistant on etch. I ran into a syntax error,

In file included from /usr/src/modass/usr_src/modules/linux-uvc/uvcvideo.h:7

I looked into the issue and applying an upstream patch fixes the build and
the resulting modules work fine.

http://svn.berlios.de/wsvn/linux-uvc/linux-uvc/trunk/?rev=243&sc=1

Maybe if the original submitter uses a newer version from unstable with
that fix included it will work for them.

Also as I pointed out in #493259, there is still value to backports working
properly.

Thanks,

Bug#493259: linux-uvc still useful in lenny

2008-09-13 Thread Matt Taggart
Depite the uvc driver going in to 2.6.26, the linux-uvc package is still
useful for people running older than 2.6.26 kernels. Even if kernels older
than 2.6.26 won't be shipped in lenny, people may choose to remain on
pre-lenny kernels. Or people may want to backport a newer version of
linux-uvc from unstable to use with the lenny kernel as bugs are fixed or
new cameras supported.

Consider this a vote for keeping the package around for a while longer.

Thanks,

So this is an audio device. Take a look into /dev/snd and /proc/asound.

The previous maintainer apparently had built the package with
debian/devil2dict being executable, so the bug did only show up after a
rebuild (dpkg-source taking away the execute bit).

Thus, the bug is also in the previous version, but it's "only" serious
there, not grave.

We would prefer a minimal update over the current version instead of a

Can you look at the installer syslog and see if anything unusual appears?

This can be done either by using Alt+F4 or by using a shell (Alt+F2) and
then using "nano /var/log/syslog".

Please note that for most filesystem the progress bar is not very
accurate while formatting is done.

Testing if usual CD installations still work is essential before getting
such patch applied at this stage of the release.

I was just thinking that it would be quite weird to be asked to eject a
CD and put another one when not using anything looking like a CD-ROM.

Bug#498862: ITP: libfile-find-rule-vcs-perl -- File::File::Rule add-on for ignoring VCS files/directories

2008-09-13 Thread Damyan Ivanov

  Version : 1.04
  Upstream Author : Adam Kennedy <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL : http://search.cpan.org/dist/File-Find-Rule-VCS/
* License : same as Perl (GPL-1+ or Artistic)
  Programming Lang: Perl
  Description : File::File::Rule add-on for ignoring VCS files/directories

Many tools need to be equally useful both on ordinary files, and on
code that has been checked out from revision control systems.

File::Find::Rule::VCS provides quick and convenient methods to
File::Find::Rule for exclusion of version control directories of
several major Version Control Systems (currently CVS, subversion, and
  Bazaar).

This package is a dependency of libmodule-inspector-perl and will be
maintained by the Debian Perl Group.

Bug#498859: openoffice.org: Freezes on loading any document

2008-09-13 Thread Neil Pilgrim
Package: openoffice.org
Version: 2.0.4.dfsg.2-7etch5
Severity: normal

Openoffice has been working fine for some time, but just yesterday after OO.o
entered document recovery mode, it got stuck in recovering a document, and I
killed the process.

It continually got stuck in document recovery on a certain document, and I
finally moved the document it got stuck on, at which point it continued - only
to get stuck in loading the documents. By stuck, I
mean that it appears to start loading the document, showing the blue squares
rapidly at the bottom of the window, then does nothing more. The window then
freezes - it does not update further. I have
waited for some time to see if it is doing anything, but top/ps doesn't show
any activity.

I have tried loading various files (big and small ones) all to no avail.

I have managed to load calc to a 'blank' file, which I then entered a little
bit of data and saved - only for that document then to freeze on the loading
screen.

I have removed/renamed ~/.openoffice.org2/ multiple times and
removed/purged/reinstalled openoffice (2.x) - all to no avail :(

Please, any ideas would be gratefully accepted!

Hi!

With 2.6.26-4, /proc/acpi/battery is back. Therefore, the battery
monitor will work with Lenny.

I will however apply a patch with your proposed modifications for a

I've the same thing as Jerome
Note that the 'lstat(./latex) failed ...' message comes from latex itself
(try
strace env -i latex avancement.tex
to see that or observe that
env -i true
does not produce any message)

Probably because 'env' use the libc exec*p (such as execvp) function:
>From the execvp manpage:
Special semantics for execlp() and execvp()
The functions execlp() and execvp() will duplicate the actions of the
shell in searching for an executable file if the specified filename
does not contain a slash (/) character. The search path is the path
specified in the environment by the PATH variable. If this variable
isn’t specified, the default path ":/bin:/usr/bin" is used. In addi‐
tion, certain errors are treated specially.

env -i sh -c 'echo $PATH'
or even
env -i bash -c 'export'
to see all the environment (in the bash shell, so I've 3 variables)
env -i env
to see the real environment after env (nothing displayed for me)

Yes, this kind of quirk should be available in regular udev package to
allow later usage by user ... that is much more user friendly for me.

Which libgl1-mesa-dri are you using? Can you try the one from experimental ?

Bug#498477: GNU readline and python2.4/2.5

2008-09-13 Thread Vincent Bernat
clone 498477 -1
reassign -1 python2.4
found -1 2.4.5-5
thanks

Hi!

I propose to append this to debian/copyright:

GNU Readline

The `readline' module makes use of GNU Readline.

The GNU Readline Library is free software; you can redistribute it
and/or modify it under the terms of the GNU General Public License as
published by the Free Software Foundation; either version 2, or (at
  your option) any later version.

On Debian systems, you can find the complete statement in
`/usr/share/doc/libreadline5/copyright'. A copy of the GNU General
Public License is available in `/usr/share/common-licenses/GPL-2'.

python2.4 is also affected by this bug.

Moreover, python2.4 and python2.5 are linked against OpenSSL while GNU
Readline does not have the special exception. This means, at best, that
a user cannot use both module using crypto (_ssl.so and _hashlib.so) and
readline module. This means that in the interactive interpreter, it
cannot do any crypto.

As stated in the original message, a solution could be to use editline.
However, enabling it seems to require some changes. Some symbols like
emacs_meta-keymap or rl_instream does not exist. Its configuration is
also different: it does not parse .inputrc and does not have the same
language configuration. For example, instead of doing:
 readline.parse_and_bind("tab: complete")
you must write:
 readline.parse_and_bind("bind ^I rl_complete")

Python shipped in MacOSX uses editline.

Gordon, can you please test the patch below. The easiest way is
probably to unpack a daily image, add the script to

of course rebuild rootskel with this patch and stick the udeb into
localudebs).

Removing iceape-browser runs its prerm script, which launches
update-alternatives --remove x-www-browser /usr/bin/iceape

I fail to see how that can fail.

FWIW, here is the patch.
I'm not very much convinced by the look of it...

Bug#497779: mime-support: should use information in /usr/share/applications

2008-09-13 Thread Brian White

I’m tired of receiving bug reports asking to add a debian/mime file to
support an outdated MIME system that no application I know besides mutt
still uses.

Thank you for your polite and informative email. I'll get to it soon.

Bug#498855: wordnet broken in etch after security update

2008-09-13 Thread Riku Saikkonen
Package: wordnet
Version: 1:2.1-4+etch1
Tags: etch

I upgraded wordnet using the recent security update in etch:

[UPGRADE] wordnet 1:2.1-4 -> 1:2.1-4+etch1
[UPGRADE] wordnet-base 1:2.1-4 -> 1:2.1-4+etch1

After this upgrade, most of the features of the "wn" command-line
client don't work. Only -over and -famln seem to work, everything else
I tried displays only two lines of text. For instance:

I think this is the same bug as #497649, which was fixed in lenny a
while ago. Any chance of fixing the bug also for etch, as the current
wordnet in etch is almost useless after the security update?

(I submitted a new bug instead of trying to reopen bug #497649 for
etch only, because I'm not familiar enough with the bug tracking
system to do the latter.)

Bug#498827: libswfdec: upstream "stable" version is 0.8.0

This package is in experimental as 0.7 was the upstream unstable version,
the new upstream 0.8 stable series was uploaded yesterday to Debian unstable
and hasn't been installed yet but will hopefully soon be installed.

After we have 0.8.0 version installed in unstable I'll ask for the removal
of the 0.7 version.

Regards.

hda1 and hdb1 share uuid with /dev/mapper/sil_aiahbgbgaaaj1 , so it is not
possible to use UUID in /etc/fstab because it is not unique

# ls -la /dev/disk/by-id/*DMRAID*

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 13 set 19:45
/dev/disk/by-id/dm-uuid-DMRAID-sil_aiahbgbgaaaj5 -> ../../dm-2

The patch increases link priority for devmapper devices that have an UUID
starting with DMRAID-.

In effect this is not a problem in d-i, so unblocking #497110

Bug#497139: doc-base's trigger seems to sometimes cause dhelp to reindex the entire cache

2008-09-13 Thread Andrew Vaughan
[cc-ed to dhelp's maintainers in case they have any suggestions as to how to
debug this/what might be causing this].

Hi

This has happened again today. I'm considering upgrading this to serious, a
2+ hour stall in the middle of a simple update is not acceptable imo.

I'm also getting the GPL Ghostscript 8.62: Unrecoverable error,
from /etc/cron.weekly/dhelp, although there has been one doc-base trigger
processed without problems between the latest /etc/cron.weekly/dhelp error
and today's run.

Thanks for your work in Debian

A more user-friendly option would be to include all such quirks in the
installer by default, but only copy those that actually "fire" to the
installed system.

In both cases this would of course only solve the problem for devices that
are connected during installation, not in cases where the user first
connects the device after the system has been installed.
For that the quirks would have to be included in the regular udev package.
Maybe if some smart grouping is done that allows most rules to be quickly
skipped it would not be too bad to have it there.

Thanks.
Upstream confirmed that the patch is ok.

How serious is the problem? Does it cause user applocation crashes or data
loss? Should I try to push the fix into lenny?

Bug#498852: munin-node: does not respect admin changes to /etc/munin/plugins

2008-09-13 Thread Marc Haber
Package: munin-node
Version: 1.2.6-5

This may be a policy violation, which would be Severity: serious.

When I decide that a certain value does not need to be plotted and
delete a file from /etc/munin/plugins, it is regenerated on postinst
of the next munin-node install. I think that a local admin decision
to delete a file needs to be respected.
