Bug#502686: ncurses-base: Overwrites files from libncurses5

Both the ncurses-base and ncurses-term packages in etch shipped a
symlink to libncurses in /usr/share/doc. They do no longer since
version 5.6+20080907-1, but the symlink needs to be removed in the
preinst scripts to avoid overwriting files belonging to libncurses5.

Bug#492061: Patch for the l10n upload of torrentflux

2008-10-18 Thread Christian Perrier

Dear maintainer of torrentflux,

NMU of your package to fix its pending l10n issues, after an initial
notice sent on Friday, October 10, 2008.

We finally agreed that you would do the update yourself at the end of
the l10n update round.

That time has come.

To help you out, here's the patch which I would have used for an NMU.
Please feel free to use all of it...or only the l10n part of it.

Bug#493682: Announce of the upcoming NMU for the iterm package

2008-10-18 Thread Christian Perrier
Dear maintainer of iterm and Debian translators,

Some days ago, I sent a notice to the maintainer of the iterm Debian
package, mentioning the status of at least one old po-debconf translation
update in the BTS.

I announced the intent to build and possibly upload a non-maintainer upload
for this package in order to fix this long-time pending localization
bug as well as all other pending translations.

The package maintainer agreed for the NMU or did not respond in two
weeks, so I will proceed with the NMU.

The full planned schedule is available at the end of this mail.

The package is currently translated to:
cs da de dz eu fr gl ja nl pt ru sv vi zh_CN zh_TW

Among these, the following translations are incomplete: da nl zh_CN zh_TW

If you did any of the, currently incomplete, translations you will get
ANOTHER mail with the translation to update.

Other translators also have the opportunity to create new translations
for this package. Once completed, please send them as a bug report
against the iterm package so I can incorporate them in the build.

The deadline for receiving updates and new translations is Saturday, October
25, 2008. If you
are not in time you can always send your translation to the BTS.

The POT file is attached to this mail.

If the maintainer objects to this process I will immediately abort my NMU
and send him/her all updates I receive.

Otherwise the following will happen (or already has):

Tuesday, October 14, 2008 : send the first intent to NMU notice to
 the package maintainer.
Sunday, October 19, 2008 : send this notice
Saturday, October 25, 2008 : (midnight) deadline for receiving
translation updates
Sunday, October 26, 2008 : build the package and upload it to
DELAYED/2-day
send the NMU patch to the BTS
Tuesday, October 28, 2008 : NMU uploaded to incoming

Thanks for your efforts and time.

2008-10-18 Thread Christian Perrier

Dear maintainer of backuppc,

On Sunday, October 12, 2008 I sent you a notice announcing my intent to upload a

the l10n update round.

That time has come.

Bug#441868: mondo: ext2 initrd fails to get mounted / unmounted

2008-10-18 Thread Andree Leidenfrost
Hi Björn,

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you!

Thank you also for your detailed analysis of the issue.

I have not seen this behaviour before other than in the context of
something actually being wrong with loop devices, so this is a bit
weird. However, I may be mistaken but I think mindi is not trying to
mount an ext2 here but a floppy image which would be (v)fat. The system
can't find the default codepage 437 and therefore the mount fails.

It would be great if you could try again with a stock Debian kernel
rather than a custom kernel. If that does indeed show the same issue, it
would also be great if you could try with the latest version (mondo
1:2.2.7-1 atm).

Given that you reported this quite some time ago, this may not be an
issue for you anymore. It would be great if you could give your feedback
either way. (I'll close the bug in four weeks time if I don't hear
anything, but active confirmation from your end would be most welcome.)

Thanks a lot & best regards,
Andree

Hmm. I think kernel-package will migrate to running make
all. And then all we really need to do is convey to make-kpkg that
extra things might need to be installed.

Bug#419600: mondo: Fails to create images larger than 1000MB when archiving to hard disk

2008-10-18 Thread Andree Leidenfrost
Hi Simon,

Sorry for the very late response!

From the mondo-archive.log I can see that mkisofs failed to create the
ISO image. I think this may be because of a problem with creating larger
files on the Iomega Rev drive. Could you try manually creating a file
larger than 1000MB, e.g. with 3380MB size directly on the mounted Iomega
Rev drive to see whether that works, e.g. by doing this:

dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/rev/test.dat bs=1M count=4380

I use 4380MB image size all the time with mondoarchive and I have not
experienced this problem. However, if this is still an issue for you, it
would be great if you could then also try the latest package version
(1:2.2.7-1 at the moment).

Given that you reported this quite some time ago, this may not be an
issue for you anymore. It would be great if you could give your feedback
either way. (I'll close the bug in four weeks time if I don't hear
anything, but active confirmation from your end would be most welcome.)

Thanks a lot & best regards,
Andree

I can confirm that the completion problem has been solved on cvs head.

Bug#502685: wget: Option to retry if download rate drops below a given limit for a given time

2008-10-18 Thread Josh Triplett
Package: wget
Version: 1.11.4-2
Severity: wishlist

Some sites or networks fail in ways where a connection drops to a
trickle (a few hundred or thousand bytes per second) but does not
actually die; this can happen, for instance, if few or no network
packets get through but no TCP disconnect occurs. Killing wget and
restarting it (always using -c) fixes the problem, but requires
manually babysitting the download or writing a hackish script to do
so. It would help to have a wget option which monitors the download
rate and treats the connection as failed if the rate drops below a
given threshold for a given time (for instance, under 10Kbps for more
than 5 seconds).

Bug#502684: deskbar-applet: crashes if Beagle Live plugin is enabled while searching

2008-10-18 Thread Mika Hanhijärvi
Package: deskbar-applet
Version: 2.22.3.1-1
Severity: important

Deskbar applet crashes if it's Beagle Live plugin is enabled while you
are searching something.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Make sure that deskbar-applet Beagle Live plugin is enabled.
2) Search something
3) clear the search field with backspace button
4) search again

deskbar-applet does not crash every time. It seems to crash
more often if you write long search string, then quickly clear search
field and then quickly write another search string.

Deskbar-applet has also another Beagle-plugin which does not search
while you type. It works just fine.

When deskbar-applet crashes Gnome bug-reporting tool starts and I get
this backtrace. Note that there is no debugging symbol debianpackage for
the libbeagle1 so this is not wery useful.

Bug#502457: RFP: nvidia-cg-toolkit

2008-10-18 Thread Andrew Fenn
Note: This request is that nvidia-cg-toolkit gets properly packaged
into the non-free section. NOT main. I thought that was pretty obvious
but I guess I have to say it out loud.

By having a downloader rather then the data it presents problems for
people with personal packages archives in Ubuntu for example. These
machines can not download from the internet which means you can not
use nvidia-cg-toolkit as a dependency in your PPA. This is how I found
out about the license change.

I have made a deb already in my personal package archives (can be
downloaded here: https://launchpad.net/~andrewfenn/+archive ) and have
also attached a diff of the debian directory to this email. Please
note that this deb isn't up to debian standards so please update it if
you feel it isn't good enough.

In this package I have put common files found in both amd64 and i386
versions of the Linux distributable and placed them in a common
folder.

I hope this information helps,
Andrew

Yep I also would like to have debugging symbols for the libbeagle. And the
reason is exactly the same.
I just got crash when I used Lenny's deskbar-applet and crash trace has
reference to libbeagle, but there is
no debugging symbols for it.

fixed 502680 1:1.1.3-1
thanks

Hi

As indicated in the original mail, the bug is fixed in sid, so no need for
this bugreport. However, now that it's there, I've marked it as fixed for sid
accordingly. The question about the severity however still remains and thus
how to fix it for lenny and etch.

Cheers

Bug#502681: gallery2: New upstream version - Gallery 2.3 (Skidoo) Released!

2008-10-18 Thread Michael Schultheiss
Package: gallery2
Severity: wishlist

Gallery 2.3 (Skidoo) is now available for download! It's been almost 20
months since the last major release and Gallery 2.3 is packed with new
features and enhancements. Major new features include: A much improved
slideshow using PicLens to provide a rich, full screen experience;
Comment spam filtering with Akismet; and configurable e-mail
notifications.

Translations and Integrations: Additionally, 8 languages are now 100%
translated, 20 more are over 50% translated, and support has been added
for integration with even more 3rd party applications!

Security: Like each and every Gallery 2 release before this one, after a
professional security audit and internal audits, we have made many
improvements to protect your Gallery installation and you. No known
exploits exist for the current version of Gallery (R2.2.6), however, we
highly recommend that you upgrade to Gallery 2.3 to insure the security
of your Gallery installation.

Bug#502446: Patch for Bug#502446: grub-installer is not updated for grub-pc introduction

2008-10-18 Thread Osamu Aoki
tags 502446 patch
thanks

Just get my point clear, I am submitting untested patch as reference.

Once tested to be good, it is technically trivial (but time consuming)
to add po files for most European languages and CJK as long as po files
are in UTF-8. So this will not make much regression.

My work on rescue scripts are pure guessing work (but simple one.)

It seems this package just changed from being purely arch independent to
also building some arch dependent packages. The build-depends-indep line
needs changing to simply build-depends so the packages are availible
when building the arch dependent packages.

It seems that the files needed are in arch/powerpc/platforms/embedded6xx/

Yes, it does.

"make all" creates:

* a vmlinux in the root directory of the kernel tree
* a zImage in arch/powerpc/boot/
* a uImage in arch/powerpc/boot/

Sure, but hunspell-fr conflicts on myspell-fr and myspell-fr-gut so it has
to provide the same dictionaries otherwise non-France users will be missing

similar (same spelling and all) that the paper-based dictionaries from
France are also used in other countries as well. The differences lie mostly
in how each word is used in different countries.

Also, if you look at myspell-fr and myspell-fr-gut, they both use the same
dictionary for all 5 locales [0]. So I think that it's fine for hunspell-fr
to do the same.

Ok, I'm just learning about embedded hardware and having them work with
Debian is a great thing to do.

Right, the cross-compilation is just an extra that I'm using right now
(the powerpc box is just unnaceptably slow for compiling its own
kernel).

I'm currently using the following attached script to make a "fake"
kernel-package.

I really don't know which subarch we should be calling here.

I will have to test this. I will follow up in a sec.

I also don't know this bug I can answer this in a moment.

Hi, Manoj.

The generated packages should be made section admin, IIRC. Regardless,

myspell-fr and hunspell-fr come from different authors/source packages
etc.

I honestly disagree. Depending on the differences it's better to have no
dictionary than a dictionary accepting a "wrong" spelling as true and
misleading users.

Yep, they are (and most probably also after lenny, we can't use the
description.xml and OOo extension thingy above, because that would
leave the Mozillas and enchant out of the game)

But in 3.0, dictionary.lst is gone :)

Bug#454555: maxima: parasitic X dependencies

2008-10-18 Thread Chris Walker
Alexander,
I've been going through some science packages looking for
easy to fix bugs.

Looking at your bug #454555, I've a couple of comments.

Policy is to build packages linked with X libraries (see below) - but
is isn't clear to me why it is maxima that depends on the various X
libraries and not xmaxima.

Perhaps you could take the time to investigate why this is the case
and if it should really be xmaxima that depends on the libraries,
perhaps you could provide a patch.

Debian policy is as follows (taken from
http://release.debian.org/lenny/rc_policy.txt )

 (m) X support

Packages that can be configured to support X, must be
so configured, and must list the appropriate packages in
Depends:. Similarly when pacakges can be configured to support
gtk, gnome or kde. (Providing different versions of the package
without X or gnome/kde support should only be done when there
is a particular need)

Packages must not install files in to /usr/{bin,include,lib}/X11,
however, they should reference the files by these names in preference
to the corresponding /usr/X11R6/ directories.

AIUI the motivation behind this policy is to avoid the archive bloat
of having X and noX versions of everything.

Chris

Bug#502654: hunspell-fr: French dictionary is not working for locales outside of France

Fair enough, sorry for using the wrong severity. I was hesitating between
important and grave because of the fact that it also affects other programs,
not just OOo.

> Your forgot Monaco (which I would assume most to be identical with fr_FR)

I based my change on "grep fr_ /etc/locale.gen" which returns this on sid:

  # [EMAIL PROTECTED] ISO-8859-15
  # fr_BE ISO-8859-1
  # fr_BE.UTF-8 UTF-8
  fr_CA ISO-8859-1
  fr_CA.UTF-8 UTF-8
  # fr_CH ISO-8859-1
  # fr_CH.UTF-8 UTF-8
  # [EMAIL PROTECTED] ISO-8859-15
  # fr_FR ISO-8859-1
  # fr_FR.UTF-8 UTF-8
  # [EMAIL PROTECTED] ISO-8859-15
  # fr_LU ISO-8859-1
  # fr_LU.UTF-8 UTF-8

So I don't know whether Monaco has a distinct locale, but based on this it
looks like they are probably just using fr_FR.

> err? pidgin and tomboy don't use this afaik. Maybe over gtkspell which
> use enchant, but..

They apparently use the myspell dictionaires in /usr/share/myspell/dicts/
and since hunspell-fr (rightfully) conflicts on myspell-fr, then the
necessary dictionaires are missing in these other apps. Installing this
patched hunspell-fr package fixes the problems.

There are some differences, but until we have specific dictionaries for all
of them, then using the ones from France is a very good
alternative. Certainly better than not having a dictionary at all :)

It has been tested on fr_CA and fr_CH. Based on the nature of the changes
and the similarity of the locales, I would be surprised if it behaved
differently on fr_BE an fr_LU.

Great, I'm glad to know that it's already fixed properly upstream in 3.0.

The symlinks are a bit of a hack, but I thought that it would be the
simplest solution to get this working for Lenny.

Cheers,

Francois

Hi,
the following CVE (Common Vulnerabilities & Exposures) id was
published for strongswan.

CVE-2008-4551[0]:
| strongSwan 4.2.6 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial
| of service (daemon crash) via an IKE_SA_INIT message with a large
| number of NULL values in a Key Exchange payload, which triggers a NULL
| pointer dereference for the return value of the mpz_export function in
| the GNU Multiprecision Library (GMP).

See also this report[1] and the upstream patch[2].

If you fix the vulnerability please also make sure to include the
CVE id in your changelog entry.

Hi Kamen,

Thanks a lot for reporting this problem, it is a pretty serious bug

Could you please replace the initscript (/etc/init.d/docvert-converter) with
the one attached to this email and let me know if that fixes your problem?

If it does, I'll try to request a freeze exception to get it fixed in Lenny.

Thanks again!

And you did test it on all the locales and you can tell me that the
differences between french in france and those locales are such minor to
ignore those? or are there none?

The people who added that dict to the OOo dir probably had those doubts too,
since the
2.4.x tree also has only fr_FR mentioned:

$ cat dictionary.lst
DICT fr FR fr_FR

3.0 though has

$ grep France description.xml

hyphenation and thesaurus dictionaries. -- French (France, Belgium, Canada,
Switzerland, Luxemburg, Monaco)
Dictionnaire orthographique français "Classique et
Réforme 1990", dictionnaire des synonymes et des césures. -- Français (France,

but also has an other version of the dictionary.

Bug#502672: [tiger] bashism ($UID) in check_patches

2008-10-18 Thread Corey Wright
Package: tiger
Version: 1:3.2.2-6
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

i finally tired of the "[: 121: Illegal number: " emails from cron and did
something about it...

check_patches claims to be a sh script, not a bash script.

UID is a bash built-in variable, but not for sh (dash).

therefor, check_patches and UID is mutually exclusive.

you can't just blindly assign the output of "id -u" to UID because under
bash the variable is read-only and generates an error. so the attached
patch first checks to see if UID is set, and if not then assigned "id -u"
output to it. unfortunately using id creates a direct dependency on
coreutils (though there might arleady be an indirect dependency on
coreutils; i haven't checked).

No, it's only aptitude which tries to remove the essential package on
dist-upgrade. Installing insserv in etch, switching sources.list to lenny,
and running 'apt-get dist-upgrade', apt has no problem calculating the
upgrade correctly.

Bug#502671: osdsh: audio mixer mode eats 100% cpu

2008-10-18 Thread Moritz Molle
Package: osdsh
Version: 0.7.0-9
Severity: important

If you configure osdsh to show audio-mixer changes (osdctl -m 1), it eats up
100% of cpu. This is because in mixerwatch.c there is a line which looks
like so:

usleep(1);

This is wrong, because this doesn't really sleep at all. It should be sleep(1)
without the 'u' for sleeping a hole second. Or the mixerchanges should be
polled via 'poll()' oder 'select()' which i tried for a patch, but
unfortunately didn't succeed.

Ok, then there's a separate permissions issue in this case.

It was set via the permission mapping when the file was opened for writing.

Bug#502670: iceweasel: Default download directory does not respect desktop_is_home_dir

2008-10-18 Thread Josh Triplett
Package: iceweasel
Version: 3.0.3-2
Severity: normal

I set the gconf preference
apps.nautilus.preferences.desktop_is_home_dir. This makes GNOME use
my home directory as my desktop, rather than ~/Desktop. Firefox 3
does not seem to respect this preference. By default, it creates a
~/Desktop directory and puts downloads there.

This seems distinct from 495442; that bug states that ~/Desktop still
gets created after changing the download directory, while this bug
states that the default download directory shouldn't point to
~/Desktop if the gconf setting
apps.nautilus.preferences.desktop_is_home_dir has the value "true".

Filed upstream as https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=443754 .

be

It's actually my fault: as the maintainer, I'd consider those bugs to
be RC for my packages, in the sense that I wouldn't want to be such bugs
in lenny for my packages, and I said this to Frans when he first told me
about the bugs.

Since you are of different opinion, let me know if a package with a fix
for this could be granted a freeze exception or not, so that I know if I
should prepare the upload or if it would be wasted time.

Yes, that's exactly the situation on my system. I tried installing
twice today, and in the first attempt it even showed the homep1 LV in
the partition list in the Installer. In the second attempt, it didn't,
but the homep1 LV was there when I looked in /dev/mapper.

Bug#502654: hunspell-fr: French dictionary is not working for locales outside of France

2008-10-18 Thread Francois Marier
Package: hunspell-fr
Version: 1:2.4.0-2
Severity: grave
Tags: patch
Justification: renders package unusable for some users

Hello,

The hunspell-fr package as it is only works for the fr_FR locale. This means
that French
speakers in other locales (fr_BE, fr_CA, fr_CH and fr_LU) cannot use the
spellchecker
at all in applications like OpenOffice.org, Pidgin or Tomboy. (All words are

I have attached a trivial patch which solves all of these issues and I would
like to
request a freeze exception with the release team once this fix has made it to
unstable.

If I can be of any assistance (for example if you prefer that I do an NMU),
please
let me know.

Thanks!

It is a not a "wrong mix" of IPv4 and IPv6 but a hybrid. And actually,
it's a valid IPv6 address because IPv6 embeds the whole IPv4 address
space. Apt-cacher-ng gets this host name directly from the operating
system.

However, in this case we see the uber-optimistic strategy of the OS,
displaying every hostname/IP as the IPv6 version as soon as the IPv6
support is enabled and is somehow related to your issue. Something I
don't really like on Linux.

I will try to add some workaround (cropping the hostname string to the
IPv4 part) but this task has really low priority.

> the functionality of the package itself, but of course the link to
> the browseable documentation is wrong.

Then please show me THAT link. IIRC you need to install a http daemon
with some default configuration (Debian's apache2 or so) to read the
docs online.

> If you specify an address apt-cacher-ng should bind to it changes to.
>
> Acquire::http { Proxy "http://[192.168.0.127]:3142";; };

And what is your question/problem with that?

If you wonder about why it's not a IPv6 address anymore, then the
answer is: because it is no longer a hybrid (IPv6/IPv4) socket. ACNG
retrieves the socket descriptions from the OS. If you don't specify
address(es) to bind to, the OS provides descriptions for hybrid sockets
(results of that seen above). If you specify hostnames/addresses, ACNG
requests appropriate socket descriptions from the OS and creates socket
for that descriptions. So eventually, for a pure V4 IP address you get a
pure V4 socket.

If you are confused about square brackets in the URL, well, they don't
hurt with any V6 aware application (i.e. apt client) but they are not
nice either and should better be removed where possible. Should be fixed
in near future.

Regards,
Eduard.

Bug#502647: iceweasel: Doesn't obey metacity's move_to_* operations

2008-10-18 Thread Josh Triplett
Package: iceweasel
Version: 3.0.3-2
Severity: normal

metacity can have keyboard shortcuts for moving the current window to
the edge of the screen. You can bind these with gconf; for instance,
the following command will bind Ctrl-Alt-r to move the current
window to the right edge of the screen:

gconftool-2 --type=string --set
/apps/metacity/window_keybindings/move_to_side_e 'r'

This works fine with most windows, but Iceweasel windows immediately
move back to their original position.

See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox-3.0/+bug/269809
for another report of this issue.

Debian installer requires Kernel-Version fields in Packages
file when searching for extra kernel modules to load
during installation process, but these fields are missing

Bug#501800: Some more info about this bug

2008-10-18 Thread Maximiliano Curia
So, some more info about the bug:

The problem is that the node->data[0] of the first node in the list of 3 is
null.

If no address includes a host part bigger than 127, it doesn't fail.

If the address that includes a host bigger than 127 is not in the same
network, it doesn't fail either.

I have to go now, will keep debugging later.

CUPS-PDF creates by default a new directory for each user that is only
accessible by this user (since the created documents might be
confidential and therefore must not be accessible by everyone by
default). To make it accessible by just one single user the directory is
chown-ed to this user and the permissions are set to 700.

I disagree that this is a bug - it behaves exactly as designed.
Nevertheless I admit that I should make a clearer statement in the
documentation that I assume a filesystem for the output that features
all basic properties of UNIX-filesystems.

/lib/modules/2.6.26-1-686/kernel/drivers/md/dm-mod.ko

I have tried to test whether the dmsetup package is needed.

Bug#501851: zsh: Completion fails if a directory name contains '(', ')' and 'Ą '.

You're right. My explanation wasn't correct; it doesn't matter if you
use the m:{[lower]}={[upper]} syntax or the older one, so I've restored
the advice that the newer one is preferable.

Thanks, this tells me that the compfiles utility isn't handling Meta
characters properly when performing matching. Luckily this seems to be
a local problem within that command that I think the patch addresses.

I'm not sure if the discussion already ended. IMHO some people still
use dvi and have some good reasons to do it.

OK, fine. We'll fix that.

texdoctk needs it, and fails to start if it is not installed. Calling
the command on the CLI causes and error message and from a menu it
calls xmessage to tell about the missing lib. This was implemented
about 2003 and we could lower the dep to recommend. Should we further
lower to Suggests?
