Bug#514314: /var/lib/dpkg/info/dnsmasq.postinst should check if /etc/init.d/dnsmasq is executable

2009-02-05 Thread Dr. Markus Waldeck
Package: dnsmasq
Version: 2.47-1
Severity: normal

A lot services in Debian check in their postinst script if the corresponding
script in /etc/init.d is executable. ONLY in this case update-rc.d is invoked.
Otherwise startup attempts of the init.d script will fail!

Looking again closer at upstream's bug report, I see that this bug
summarizes to "bad login counter in the LDAP backend is not
incremented when a failed login happens"

This is a clear regression from 3.0 and it maybe deserves to be fixed
in a point release for lennymaybe even before lenny is released,
by backporting upstream's fix and do an high urgency upload, provided
the release team ACK's this.

We have very few time left for this.

I'm still balanced to qualify this as a security issue (which would
make us go through a security upload).

the log is a bit verbose so i may have missed something, but what i did
notice is that you don't seem to have the mysql cmdline client installed,
which should be a dependency of your package (dbc does not take care of this
automatically, it's briefly mentioned in section 3.1.1 of the docs)

Bug#514310: vncsnapshot: argument parsing (-tunnel) broken

2009-02-05 Thread Mark Eichin
Package: vncsnapshot
Version: 1.2a-1+b1
Severity: normal

Took some playing around with ltrace to catch this, but

  vncsnapshot -tunnel ${host}:3 /tmp/${host}.03.jpg

gives a Usage message which includes

> Usage: vncsnapshot [] []: filename
>vncsnapshot [] -listen [] filename
>vncsnapshot [] -tunnel : filename
>vncsnapshot [] -via []: filename

Turns out -tunnel (tunnel.c, processTunnelArgs) looks at the *last*
argument for host:port:

  pdisplay = strchr(argv[*pargc - 1], ':');

rather than tunnelArgIndex. This would suggest

  vncsnapshot -tunnel /tmp/${host}.03.jpg ${host}:3

which in fact gets around the argument parsing, and prompts for a
password, and then fails with:

Couldn't convert '/tmp/${host}.03.jpg' to host address
Unable to connect to VNC server

Anyway, here's a patch (with debugging noise left in) that makes
vncsnapshot -tunnel work. -via is probably broken too, I haven't
tried it yet. The key bits are
  * actually *use* tunnelArgIndex
  * use localhost::port so it doesn't add 5900 to it again

(It looks like upstream hasn't been touched since 2004, so getting
this fixed in debian directly would probably be worthwhile.)

Hi Steffen!

From my knowledge, 0.1.1 and 0.2alpha are not affected because the
background attribute is not accepted at all.

The patch also fixes a regexp and I don't know if this is related to a
security issue. I will ask upstream about this.

Until I get a confirmation, I leave the report as is. I hope that
roundcube won't be removed from lenny. ;-)

Thanks for the report.

Bug#497760: ITP: ttf-aoyagi-kouzan

2009-02-05 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Package: wnpp
Followup-For: Bug #497760

Hi,

mind you, my Japanese is anything but good. But I visited the upstream
homepage of Mr Aoyagi and took a look at what he has to say about the
license himself.

http://www7a.biglobe.ne.jp/~kouzan/page012.html

"いかなる条件もございません" -> no restrictions at all
"本当に自由に掲載して頂いて結構です" -> you are absolutely free to make public
"100%自由に問題なく使っていただけます。問い合わせも必要ありません。"  ->
100% free to use. There is no need for inquiries.

The whole text gave me the impression of "public domain", do with
it as you please.

Since the font is indeed nice, I'd like to give it a shot at packaging
it. I'd appreciate some kind of mentorship, though, since it would be
my first font to package.

Regards

Rolf

Hi, Ian. Thank you very much for this bug report. You certainly
should be able to list/attach with the user you specify when creating
the session.

We were wondering if you maybe have an unusually strict umask
(eg. 0077) set for the root user. This is the only thing that we can
think of at the moment that would have caused the permissions on the
env files to be set so that a non-privileged user could not read them.
And unreadable env files could definitely have caused the problems
you're seeing. I believe the default root umask in Debian is 022,
which would mean the env files would normally be created with
permissions such that all users could read them.

Clearly cereal should fail more gracefully if there is an unusually
strict umask set. We're now working on making it more robust for such
a setup. Thanks for bringing it to our attention, and sorry for the
inconvenience.

Bug#514084: [xf86-input-tslib] patch for latest XINPUT ABI

2009-02-05 Thread Wen-Yen Chuang
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Upstream author of xf86-input-tslib said that he/she
rarely use it anymore and do not even have the possibility to compile
and test it under latest X.org.

If anyone do have interest in xf86-input-tslib and want to take
upstream maintainership, please read what Sascha Hauer said listed
below. :-)

I have no enough knowledge to take the upstream maintainership.
I will keep maintaining xf86-input-tslib for Debian.

Kind regards

Bug#512228: [Pkg-utopia-maintainers] Bug#512228: dbus-daemon error message in auth.log

2009-02-05 Thread Andrew Deason
I see this too, but it seems like a bug in system-tools-backends to me.
I first started seeing this message when s-t-b was fixed due to
CVE-2008-4311, so I think the dbus system.d config just isn't right.
There's an explicit in there,
which is specifically what e.g. nautilus is calling.

If I add to the default policy
in /etc/dbus-1/system.d/system-tools-backends.conf, it looks like I
don't get the message anymore. Is this a correct fix?

Bug#514305: smarty: Please sync the install path with Ubuntu

2009-02-05 Thread Francois Marier
Package: smarty
Version: 2.6.22-1
Severity: important

Currently, the Debian package for smarty installs it in:

  /usr/share/php/smarty/libs/

whereas the Ubuntu package install its files here:

  /usr/share/php/smarty/

This causes smarty-enabled applications in Debian to fail on Ubuntu because the
include path is different. Two such packages are Moodle and Mahara. They
require Ubuntu
customisations to work around the different paths.

I'm not sure what the right path is, but there was a discussion in the Ubuntu
tracker
which referred to the upstream install guide:

Bug#501326: linux-image-2.6.26-1-amd64: The same on Asus p5l-vm1394

2009-02-05 Thread Michal Suchanek
Package: linux-image-2.6.26-1-amd64
Version: 2.6.26-13
Followup-For: Bug #501326

I am using suspend to disk.

The /sys/power/disk is set to platform and does not work when set to
shutdown either.

The PC powers off for a few seconds and then powers on again.

It does not work with 2.6.25 either. However, the problem started only
recently, suspend to disk used to work.

It is possible to power off by holding the power button or by booting
other system and powering off using that.

Bug#514303: boinc-client: by default BOINC binds to all network adaptors

2009-02-05 Thread Sheridan Hutchinson
Package: boinc-client
Version: 6.2.14-3
Severity: normal

Rather distrubingly, BOINC binds to all network adaptors rather than just
localhost, despite the
allow_remote_gui_rpc setting not being set.

As an end-user, I would have expected just for it to bind to the localhost for
availability for the boinc-manager.

While there is not an explicity security issue here, because no hosts/ip's are
listed in the remote authorisation
file, there is an implicit one and that is if there is ever a buffer overflow
against boinc then it's possible that
is going to be exploited by other people.

Netstat output:
tcp0 0 0.0.0.0:31416 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN
20006/boinc
tcp0 0 127.0.0.1:631 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN
3126/cupsd

You can see where cupsd for example has bound locally and boinc has bound
globally.

If I can be of any further assistance then please don't hesistate to let me
know.

Bug#514302: gftp: "Overwrite by default" is ignored.

2009-02-05 Thread s. keeling
Package: gftp
Version: 2.0.18-16
Severity: normal

This may well be suckage on the part of my ISP. They do have smart
Debian guys on staff, but also do a lot of stuff with Windows (so all
bets are off :-).

gftp always pops up the dialog insisting I verify that transfers should
be done, even with overwrite by default selected. Ewww. :-)

I'd much prefer to use CLI scp for this, but ISP can't handle it (drat).

It all works, but why is gftp acting like Windows Security? :-P

Still, better than CuteFTP, pt!

Thanks mon.

I've dropped in a slew of rules to deal with the majority of this
issue. I've probably missed some sources, but I'll try to check again
in the next few days and add additional rules for anything that I've
missed.

As always, more assistance with generating better rules is always
accepted.

There is no -dev package for libmimelib4, as kde currently promise to not
promise any kind of abi stability and thus we in kde team really don't want to
provide -dev packages for such libraries.

Even if we did find a way, you would grow quite some new dependencies:

$ ldd -r /usr/lib/libmimelib.so.4
linux-gate.so.1 =>  (0xb7f7f000)
libkdecore.so.5 => /usr/lib/libkdecore.so.5 (0xb7cd9000)

How can I get access over the hardware from Mac?

You neither should link the Ultra-wide virus, nor can telnet to a tower of the
command prompt over a pin to a line but from the preferences menu within
Netscape you can't overclock the memory address and from Outlook Express 5.8
or from the control file inside X-Windows you either have to digit from the
parallel AT case, or must get access on a folder, in such way therefore you
either have to connect from a fan to the firewall to a login, or must debug the
operating system over a Ultra SMTP site to remove from the IRC computer of the
level-62 IDE mouse.

Bug#514299: jacksum: Incorrect output for data provided by stdin

2009-02-05 Thread Zachary Palmer
Package: jacksum
Version: 1.7.0-2
Severity: normal

*** /tmp/reportbug-jacksum-20090205-14781-RuopgH
Subject: jacksum: incorrect checksum generated from stdin
Package: jacksum
Version: 1.7.0-2
Severity: normal

When reading from standard input, Jacksum assumes the existence of a
newline at the end of the input even if one is not present. Consider
the following:

zpal...@thirtyseven:~$ echo "test" | md5sum
d8e8fca2dc0f896fd7cb4cb0031ba249 -
zpal...@thirtyseven:~$ echo "test" | jacksum -a md5
d8e8fca2dc0f896fd7cb4cb0031ba249
zpal...@thirtyseven:~$ echo -n "test" | md5sum
098f6bcd4621d373cade4e832627b4f6 -
zpal...@thirtyseven:~$ echo -n "test" | jacksum -a md5
d8e8fca2dc0f896fd7cb4cb0031ba249

This appears to be independent of the algorithm in question; the same
problem arose when using CRC8 and SHA1.

This problem is not present when reading from a file:

zpal...@thirtyseven:~$ echo -n "test" > ztemp
zpal...@thirtyseven:~$ jacksum -a md5 ztemp
098f6bcd4621d373cade4e832627b4f6 ztemp

We're currently using /proc in our patched version. I suppose we'll stay
that way, it's simpler and doesn't bring license trouble with CDDL stuff.

We'll send a patch for that when we're reasonably sure this is what we want
to do, and that s-s-d is working properly.

Ok, added the arch in git now. And, yes the s-s-d part seemed fishy
anyway. You could probably port libkvm from {Open,}Solaris and use that
instead, but AFAICS the libkvm from Solaris is slightly different than
the one from the BSDs, stuff like kvm_getproc -> kvm_getprocs.

But then it might be more "portable" to make use of /proc, instead of
libkvm, as you avoid the problem of not being able to mix 32bit userland
and 64bit kernels and similar.

Hi,

With a pdf version 1.6 that reported security: encryption, I was unable

Is kpdf deliberately crippled, or is there a workaround?

Please provide a sample of document showing the issue.

http://www.acma.gov.au/webwr/_assets/main/lib310648/ecs_disc_paper.pdf

The permissions of this document say that client applications should not copy
the test of the document. KPDF could tell that the reason is that indeed, but
KPDF is frozen solid and no more KDE 3 releases are planned, so it cannot be
done. (And Okular - KPDF successor in KDE 4 - does that, anyway.)
However, you can disable the fact that KPDF respect the DRM bits of the
document, just go in the preferences.

Ah, thanks! I couldn't find anything in the manual page or
/usr/share/doc/kpdf, and the online help only gives a picture of the
preferences box.

Odd, I fixed that once, but I must have reset it in CVS by accident.
Thanks for the catch.

Ok, this one I have no excuse for. I've split the bug to deal with this
seperately.

Bug#510884: bastille: InteracticeBastille complains about unsupported OS 'DB5.0'

2009-02-05 Thread Mick Timony
I've seen the same problem too. Looks like the list of supported OS needs to
be updated in 2 files so that it supports Lenny (Debian 5.0):

/usr/lib/Bastille/API.pm
/usr/lib/Bastille/IOLoader.pm

I also tried the version from Experimental and it has the same problem.

Bastille starts, because I've had it configured and running for a few years.
Now I need to reconfigure bastille and InteractiveBastille fails on the
Debian Version number in /etc/debian_version .

Hi,

I've upgraded several machines now, and never hit the bug you're showing here,
also I just debootstrapped Etch, installed spe, python2.5 and the other
packages you've mentioned, and dist-upgraded to Lenny - no problem (except
that aptitude is weird ;))

Therefore I'm downgrading the bug. In case you think that's not right, please
show me how to reproduce it.

Thanks,

Bernd

Bug#514295: watchdog: shutdown procedure could segfault

2009-02-05 Thread Jan Rouš
Subject: watchdog: shutdown procedure could segfault
Package: watchdog
Version: 5.4
Severity: important
Tags: patch

*** Please type your report below this line ***

I've discovered that watchdog package may crash during shutdown
procedure in mnt_off() function due to the missing MNTTAB file.

This may be due to the exotic platform (and handmade gentoo derivate
distro) I'm trying to use watchdog on but I still think it is not
neccessary to crash so hard here.

MNTTAB is defined as /etc/fstab and this file is not present on the
system. Thus NULL is returned from setmntent and is later used without
validation.

I'm attaching simple patch that performs validation and thus
eliminates segfault.

I think that the problem is not debian related as it occured on a
different distro
but looking at the AUTHORS I found out that author of the package is also the
debian maintainer so I'm submitting this way.

Wish you good day,

It seems like kdepim in kde4 still contains libmimelib. did mimelib
change the api fundamentally from kde3 to kde4, or would it be easy to
migrate packages which use mimelib (like lurker)?

I found libmimelib4 from kde4 in the expermental repository, but no
libmimelib4-dev. Also I'm not very experienced in c++ programming. but
i'll take a look at it and see what i can do.

Unfortunately the upstream author of lurker is quite busy and seems to
have lost interest in lurker since about a year. still lurker is a very
efficient and well-designed mailinglist archiving software, so i'd like
to keep it in the debian archive.

greetings,
 jonas

Bug#514292: linux-image-2.6.28-1-amd64: Bad page state in process 'emacs'

2009-02-05 Thread Luca Capello
Package: linux-image-2.6.28-1-amd64
Version: 2.6.28-1~experimental.1~snapshot.12674
Severity: important

Hello!

I hope it is OK to report bugs in the unofficial kernels to the official
Debian BTS, please correct me if I am wrong.

This afternoon, I was moving a mail from my IMAP mailbox to the local
disk with Gnus on Emacs [1] when the machine froze, with the attached
messages on the screen. FYI, I have never experienced it with other
kernels, both official from the Debian archive or unofficial from
http://kernel-archive.buildserver.net .

In case I am wrong and the bug is indeed in Emacs, feel free to close
it, I will submit a new one to the Emacs BTS.

FWIW, this is not the first problem I have with 2.6.28 [2]. Moreover,
it seems the temperature problem I experienced in the past with previous
kernels are still there [3].

Thx, bye,
Gismo / Luca

Bug#514291: pidgin: crashes for some reason

2009-02-05 Thread Mohammed Adnène Trojette
Package: pidgin
Version: 2.5.4-1
Severity: normal

  Hello Ari,

I hope you're doing fine. I've decided to systematically run pidgin in
gdb, as crashes occur more often these days.

Here is the backtrace for the last crash. Pidgin was running in
background, so I don't know what caused it. What can I do to help solve
this bug?

Thanks in advance for considering.

Program received signal SIGPIPE, Broken pipe.

Hi Release Team,

please have a look at #514255 - I think it makes sense to remove
fama/tapioca-glib/telepathy-sharp from testing.

Thanks,

Bug#514288: stock debian kernels map heap, data, and other sections as rwx

2009-02-05 Thread tgo
Package: linux-image-2.6.24-e
Version: 2.6.24-6~etchnhalf.7
On both vmlinuz-2.6.18-5-686 and vmlinuz-2.6.24-etchnhalf.1-686 kernels, the
debian system maps the heap, binary data, and other data sections as rwx,
instead of the normal and sensible rw-.

It seems incorrect and also very bad from a security standpoint to have this
behavior. I am aware that the kernel does not ask for these mappings to be
created, but it also should enforce some sort of W^X behavior. The loader or
whichever userland application that asks for the mappings should also be
alterted to follow the normal memory permission standards.

You need to split the description into short and long versions.

Bug#349830: courier-imap: Please fix prior to lenny release - RAMRUN=yes in /etc/default/rcS causes startup failure

2009-02-05 Thread Tim Small
Package: courier-imap
Version: 4.4.0-2
Followup-For: Bug #349830

In Lenny, with RAMRUN=yes enabled in /etc/default/rcS, courier imapd and
auth daemon fail to start (subdirectory creation is necessary).

I would appreciate it if you could up this to important and fix, as I
currently have to manually hack the init scripts...

Thanks,

Tim.

Done and uploaded, debdiff attached.

@release team: This is a direct revert of the change that went into
version 94, so it's veeery safe.

> The check was introduced to help users who misconfigured their

I reopened the original bug (#472627) for Lenny, and keep this bug
open for the experimental version, so that I won't forget about it.

Bernd's patch looks fine to me, but before I apply it to the
experimental branch, I want to create a test case for this regression,
and change the existing test case for #472627 to match the new patch.
I'm not going to do that past midnight, and don't want to do it "under
the gun" for Lenny. Let's stay on the safe side this close to the
release.

Thanks to everyone involved, and good night,

Martin

Yes, an example like the one you gave would be perfect. Something to
make us aware of the issue.

Bug#514284: moodle: New releases fot 1.6.x fixes security problems

2009-02-05 Thread Vicm3
Package: moodle
Version: 1.6.3-2+etch1
Severity: normal

New releases: Moodle 1.9.4, 1.8.8, 1.7.7 and 1.6.9
by Martin Dougiamas - Thursday, February 5, 2009, 03:48 PM

Hi!

We released some new versions of Moodle last week: full details
about them are on the sparkly new Moodle download page.

As usual these point releases wrap up a good number of small
fixes and enhancements, including a brand-new security report
from Petr Skoda that helps admins discover and correct insecure
settings (note that a small performance issue affecting some
users has already been fixed since 1.9.4 so get the latest
weekly if you can)

Most importantly, there are also fixes for all the security
vulnerabilities reported on the Moodle Tracker over the past few
months (thanks to all those who reported them!). Full details of
these security fixes are, as usual, disclosed on our security
page. (Note that administrators of registered Moodle sites were
already informed about these releases a week ago as per our
normal release process). To keep your sites safe all you need to
do is upgrade your Moodle sites as soon as you can! If you would
like to discuss any of the disclosed vulnerabilities or general
techniques to improve the security of your own site, please come
to our Security and Privacy forum.

It's also worth mentioning that Moodle 1.6.9 and Moodle 1.7.7
mark the last builds that the core team plan to release from
those branches (unless someone else volunteers to maintain them)
due to the amount of work involved. In short, please upgrade to
later versions! smile

In the meantime, we are also pushing ahead rapidly with the
Moodle 2.0 roadmap and a number of enhancements for Moodle 1.9.5
... some exciting things lie ahead!

Cheers,
Martin

P.S. Did I mention you really should upgrade your Moodle sites?

Bug#514276: cannot load font

2009-02-05 Thread Thomas Dickey

On Fri, 6 Feb 2009, jida...@jidanni.org wrote:

Package: xterm
Version: 241-1
X-debbugs-Cc: dic...@invisible-island.net

Gentlemen, xterm runs fine.
It's just that these days on experimental, not sid, one gets
xterm: cannot load font -Misc-Fixed-bold-R-*-*-18-120-100-100-C-180-ISO10646-1

So then I replaced
!*VT100.font: -misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--18-*-*-*-*-*-iso10646-1
*VT100.font: -*-*-*-*-*-*-18-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
in .Xresources.
But now I get
xterm: cannot load font -ETL-Fixed-medium-I-*-*-18-180-72-72-C-180-ISO10646-1
xterm: cannot load font -ETL-Fixed-bold-I-*-*-18-180-72-72-C-180-ISO10646-1
And what is actually bad is now the fonts are too small.

OK, now I clicked large fonts, and it says xterm: cannot load font
-Misc-Fixed-bold-R-*-*-18-120-100-100-C-180-ISO10646-1

But at least the characters are the right size again.

OK, I will use the line
*VT100.font: -misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--18-*-*-*-*-*-iso10646-1
But please tell me how to stop getting the error message.

I'll quiet this in #242 (will require a code change)

It doesn't match "grave" in the text book sense of the Debian Policy,
in that it doesn't completely render the package useless for
everybody. But I agree that it breaks things pretty badly for the
users who have such setups; sorry for that bug, I didn't think of this
when I implemented it.

TBH this is not really the time to fiddle with it, for Lenny I'd just
back out the original change completely. The check was introduced to
help users who misconfigured their clusters to run on the same port,
and thus got hangs on shutdown, etc. But that's not anywhere near a
grave problem.

I'll upload a package with that change backed out, and no other
changes, in some minutes. Then I'll reopen the original bug for
unstable, and think about a proper solution (which might be Bernd's
patch, or some completely redesigned approach) for experimental and
post-Lenny.

Thanks,

Martin

Bug#514278: acpi-support: postinst removes conffile thinkpad_acpi.modprobe (and messes with others)

2009-02-05 Thread Nikolaus Schulz
Package: acpi-support
Version: 0.109-10
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 10.7.3

Hi,

/etc/modprobe.d/thinkpad_acpi.modprobe is removed in the postinst.
Other, obsolete conffiles are renamed. All this happens
unconditionally, that is, discarding all possible changes of the user to
these files.

Please see http://wiki.debian.org/DpkgConffileHandling for good ways to
handle obsolete conffiles.

Note that thinkpad_acpi.modprobe is *not* obsolete, and it is also
removed upon the first install of the package, so my fresh Debian
install was born without it. :-) This interesting behaviour is caused
by an an uncomplete fix for bug #481253 [1].

--- Comment #13 from Brian Cameron 2009-02-05 22:27 UTC ---

Thanks. I committed the patch to the 2.20 branch with a minor change. I
removed the g_assert's from the calls to g_shell_parse_argv. I worry that
asserting could cause the daemon to exit which would cause problems for
any running displays, I'd think. I would accept any further patches to
improve the error handling, but I suspect just asserting isn't the best
answer here. Otherwise the patch looks correct. The double-free problem
is a pretty obvious bug..

Alas, I have yet to get to it, since it works for me.

The getrlimit(2) manual page says that Linux treats the process limit as
a thread limit, so it seems likely that xine hit this limit when trying
to start a new thread.

Bug#514276: cannot load font

2009-02-05 Thread jidanni
Package: xterm
Version: 241-1
X-debbugs-Cc: dic...@invisible-island.net

Gentlemen, xterm runs fine.
It's just that these days on experimental, not sid, one gets
xterm: cannot load font -Misc-Fixed-bold-R-*-*-18-120-100-100-C-180-ISO10646-1

So then I replaced
!*VT100.font: -misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--18-*-*-*-*-*-iso10646-1
*VT100.font: -*-*-*-*-*-*-18-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
in .Xresources.
But now I get
xterm: cannot load font -ETL-Fixed-medium-I-*-*-18-180-72-72-C-180-ISO10646-1
xterm: cannot load font -ETL-Fixed-bold-I-*-*-18-180-72-72-C-180-ISO10646-1
And what is actually bad is now the fonts are too small.

OK, now I clicked large fonts, and it says xterm: cannot load font
-Misc-Fixed-bold-R-*-*-18-120-100-100-C-180-ISO10646-1

But at least the characters are the right size again.

OK, I will use the line
*VT100.font: -misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--18-*-*-*-*-*-iso10646-1
But please tell me how to stop getting the error message.

xterm works fine. The problem is today I stared getting these error
message.

By the way, on the xterm man page, one sees
   Large (font5)
Set the font to that given by the *VT100.font5 resource.
OK, but how does one set that in .Xresources?
*VT100.font:*VT100.font5 No
*VT100.font:$*VT100.font5 No
*VT100.font:VT100.font5 No
*VT100.font:$VT100.font5 No
How does one do it?!

Does the .Xresources language have no way to do b=bla; a=$b? Is b
already set somewhere?

Bug#514015: options for fixing

thanks for your replies. Again, this is mostly because I needed some
idle occupation and am not into sudoku. Apologies for presenting it a
way that looked like a proposal.

Well, having 1000 maintainers do the right thing is difficult, as proven
by the release process.

> Adding a Debian-specific option to tar would certainly not be my first
> choice.

Other options do exist, my list probably is not exhaustive, but I would
think that they cost a lot of code with a lot of opportunity to add bugs
where things work now and it might be interesting to have an upper bound
for how involved a minimal fix is.

Thinking on a larger scale, what we actually want to do here is unpack a
tarball into a chroot. I venture that this is a reasonable use case of
tar and that it might just be possible to try to have upstream agree to
have such an option in principle so that there is a plan to get rid of
the debian-specificity of the option.

Bastian Blank wrote:
>> - switch off tar,

> I intend to replace tar with a custom unpack routine in cdebootstrap.

TBH, I'm not that impressed by the implementation of ar (or a subset) in
dpkg and am not sure that reimplementing tar extraction it is a good
path to take when I would think that an option for tar to do the right
thing (whether internally munging symlinks when resolving paths or using
chroot) might have a general use beyond bootstrapping Debian systems.

I have not tested it, but I would venture the same thing (calling tar,
ergo having the same problem) from when I last looked at it.

Well, you'd have to intercept all the relevant calls (for
dereferencing/reading symlinks). Seems doable, but IMO tar would be the
better place. But if the masses want funny business, so be it.

...
>> - add chroot option to tar (see patch).

> This is a root only option.

Yes. It was my impression that (c)debootstrap are supposed to be called
by root. At least I always used to call them as root when I was a developer.

Kind regards

And also - probably more importantly - because some packages that belong
to a task may not be available for all architectures.

This means that for example if a task lists a powerpc- or sparc-specific
package, it will currently not get included on the CD (unless it gets
included for other reasons of course).
This won't affect installs where a mirror is used, but can affect installs
from CD/DVD only.

Bug#514274: Bad ppp frames for certain TCP package lengths

2009-02-05 Thread Eckhart Wörner
Package: ppp
Version: 2.4.4rel-10.1
Severity: important

With a UMTS connection to o2 Germany, connections sometimes dropped. Looking
into that issue with wireshark, I found out that the
connection drops because a TCP package of length 187 + k * 240 bytes (with k in
0,1,...) never makes it to the TCP stack of the
receiver (i.e. the computer where PPP is running). This can be reproduced using
netcat and a 187 byte file.
Analyzing the ppp recording itself using wireshark there are three ppp frames
displayed for that TCP packet: one frame of length 240,
one frame of length 241 and one frame of length 1.
I wasn't able to reproduce this bug using Windows, however I only tried it with
a 187 byte packet, I did not run extensive tests
with variable packet sizes yet.

Bug#514008: apache2: Alias for /usr/share/images missing?

2009-02-05 Thread Reuben Thomas

On Thu, 5 Feb 2009, Tollef Fog Heen wrote:

Given that /usr/share/images is not only used by web packages, I think
the answer is «no». Those packages should make sure to set up the
necessary aliases they need (or we could have something like
/usr/share/httpd/images that would be shipped in apache2.2-common and
which would be in the default config).

Should I file bugs against packages that don't set up these links then?

I made now a little patch which fixes this. If nobody of the other
grub-devs objects then I commit this in a few days.

Luckly that Dell partition has .AT16 where normal FAT partitions have
FAT12/FAT16/FAT32 and I hope that nobody wants to access this partition
with grub2.
But there seems to be a bug in D-I or somewhere else, for me mkfs.ext2
clears out the first 512 bytes if I format a file/partition with it.

Bug#514237: debian-cd: Support non-i386 mirrors, and support D-I modules in non-main

For the calls from boot-* it does not matter as those scripts won't be
called for source only CDs.

So we're left with the call from update_tasks. There we really have
another, more fundamental issue that has to be considered.

We currently use the Packages file from i386 to expand a task to a package
list. Essentially this is broken because different arches can have
different dependencies! In practice this problem is quite limited, but it
_is_ important that we don't use one of the more obscure arches to build
the list as that is *a lot* more likely to result in a broken expanded
package list than when we use i386 or amd64.

So IMO:
* ideally we should run update_tasks for every architecture separately,
using the Packages file for that arch; for source-only CDs we should
use i386 with fallback to amd64, and fail otherwise
* but as long as we do not do that
  - for binary or binary/source CDs: prefer i386, with fallback to:
1) amd64
2) arches listed in $ARCHES
  - for source-only CDs: use i386, with fallback to amd64, and fail
otherwise

IMO it's reasonable to fail if someone wants to build source only but does
not have a full mirror, or at least has the most common arches. Other
cases will be extremely rare, and if someone really wants to he can just
modify the script.

Killing libcrypto fixes also #514122. The new binary depends on

Okay.

I won't read nor comment a very long thread polluted by well-known trolls
around
wodim vs cdrkit/cdrecord.

You already reported this bug on wodim and I think that this actual bug is a
duplicate of it.

So I am hereby reassigning, downgrading and merging this bug. If you want that
bug to be handled with more care, you will need to be more concise and precise
in your following-up mails.

* For CD-burning related bugs, please mention the exact hardware that you use.
* For all bugs, please mention the versions of the various packages used
* When you test or try to reproduce your bug, use one tool and do only one
action at once (wodim file.iso => works ?, genisoimage => works ?, ...) that
is: "hunt" the bug down to a "single point of failure". If this turns out to be
impossible or too hard, at least provide a "path to reproduce the bug", that
is: I did this with that file, I used that command and it produced this. Keep
in mind that the maintainer or anybody willing to correct the bug that you
report has to be able to understand and/or reproduce your bug to be able to
correct it.
"A good question contains half the answer."

Best regards,

OdyX

IIRC the original partition layout of this machine was:

/dev/hda1 - small FAT partition containing dell utilities
/dev/hda2 - ubuntu

I deleted those partitions in d-i (lenny rc1), and made a single /dev/hda1 of
the whole disk, so its start would have been where that fat used to be.

This seems identical to #505137, so I think that bug was closed too
