Bug#516524: Still valid for libcairo2 1.8.6-2
Am Samstag, den 28.02.2009, 23:55 +0100 schrieb Tobias Knieper: I'm experiencing the same issue with libcairo2 1.8.6-2. Downgrading to 1.6.4-7 resolves the issue immediately. Upgrading to 1.8.6-2 brings it back. It appears not only on the page mentioned in this report. It is also still valid for the mentioned example page given in bug report #508214 (already archived) [1] but also on more pages like [2, 3]. Also using an intel i965 card. Hi, as this is a X/driver bug I've decided to remove the workaround for this bug for the last uploads. Bug#512562: Review of copyright file for xsettings-kde.
user debian-le...@lists.debian.org usertags 512562 one-copyright-review thanks Dear Guido, In the hope of speeding the processing of the NEW queue, I had a look to the copyright file of your new package, xsettings-kde. I have found the following discrepancy: the file xsettings-* are not licensed under the GPL. This may get your pakcage rejected by our archive administrators. It also might be argued that the GPL is not compatible witht the license of these files; it could be worthwile to seek some advice about this. See for instance the following two emails: http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2004/05/msg00753.html http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2002/08/msg00254.html A more minor issue: I think that in the absence of contrary statement, works licenced under the GPL can be relicensed to later versions. I encourage you to upload an updated version. I attached a proposed patch for your copyright file, as well as a machine-readable version. Bug#44435: less: searching fails if files contain \0
This bug has finally been fixed upstream (as of version 400), as long as less is built with the PCRE regex library. The current less package doesn't explicitly specify which regex library to use, though, and configure ends up picking the POSIX regcomp() function (at least on i386). This means the bug is still present on Debian systems, even though the version of less we're using already contains the fix. How would you feel about configuring less to use PCRE instead? Bug#518585: gnome-utils: gnome-system-log shouldn't need gksu
Package: gnome-utils Version: 2.20.0.1-3 Severity: normal When a user is allowed to monitor system logs (set using System - Administration - Users and Groups and giving the user privileges to allow him to monitor system logs - which adds him to the adm group), he shouldn't be asked to provide the root password to open gnome-system-log from the menu. When a user belongs to the adm group, all files presented by default by the system log viewer are readable by him, so there is no reason to ask him for the root password. Perhaps asking for the password inside the program _only_ if the user tries to access some log files that belong to some group to which he doesn't belong would make more sense. Bug#518591: aptitude: Please create search shorthand with semantics of apt-cache search
Package: aptitude Version: 0.4.11.11-1 Severity: normal Please create a search shorthand that has the semantics of the search functionality in apt-cache. Empirically, it seems that the following is true: apt-cache search kde camera is equivalent to the following: aptitude search '(~nkde|~dkde)(~ncamera|~ncamera)' The aptitude form is much longer while the semantics of this type of search are very useful. In the above example, I am looking for any packages that have the words kde or camera in the name or description. It would be really nice to have a nice and simple shorthand to do this kind of search with aptitude. Maybe the following syntax would work: aptitude cache-search kde camera Or maybe a new ~ search pattern should be introduced. I find myself using apt-cache to do searches even though I like the aptitude search output much better. Bug#518596: R Commander missing in applications menu
Package: r-cran-rcmdr Version: 1.3-15-1 R Commander is used as a graphical interface to R, which means a graphical application, and as such should be listed somewhere in the Applications menu. This can be obtained by just adding to the package the following two files: /usr/bin/rcmdr : --- 8 - #!/bin/sh R_DEFAULT_PACKAGES=$R_DEFAULT_PACKAGES Rcmdr R --- 8 - /usr/share/applications/rcmdr.desktop : --- 8 - [Desktop Entry] Categories=Education;Science;Math; Comment=Graphical interface to the R environment for statistical computing Comment[fr]=Environnement graphique pour le logiciel de calcul statistique R Comment[it]=Interfaccia grafica per l'ambiente di calcolo statistico R Exec=/usr/bin/rcmdr Icon=/usr/share/R/doc/html/logo.jpg Name=R Commander Terminal=true Type=Application X-KDE-SubstituteUID=false --- 8 - Please notice that: - I would have preferred to not put R Commander under Education, since this is quite reductive. However, I'm afraid this is inevitable (see for instance [0]). - I'm filing the bug here, I frankly ignore if upstream is interested in this kind of desktop issues; the maintainer has probably better knowledge than me. Anyway, the patch has almost no maintenance cost, since it doesn't touch upstream code. - the rcmdr miniscript is itself quite useful (I do use it often); it would also be possible for upstream to adopt only that, and then the .desktop could be added as a Debian patch, don't know. - the only thing I don't like in this setup is that menu item uses (jpg) R icon, not R Commander's one... that I was unable to find (though it appears in the interface, so I imagine is dinamicly generated). Eventually, it could be staticized and added too as /usr/share/pixmaps/rcmdr.svg; then the line of the .desktop file could be changed from Icon=/usr/share/R/doc/html/logo.jpg to Icon=rcmdr.svg . Bug#514282: ticgit: does not handle non-alphanumeric titles
Scott, On Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 11:08:49AM +0100, Michael Schutte wrote: ticgit currently fails to preserve titles with characters outside [0-9a-z ]. A Debian user would like to create tickets with Cyrillic titles, and I myself wish for the possibility to use other ASCII printables such as punctuation. The current implementation does not allow storing such things safely; a “/”, if not processed by clean_string, would obviously fail, and Windows cannot even stand [?*:|+] etc. The easiest fix to this problem would be the introduction of an extra file, such as “TICKET_TITLE”, in every ticket’s directory. The program could continue to read and write the processed title in the DATE_TITLE/ format for compatibility reasons, but also store the “true” title to be used by newer versions. As far as I can tell, this would be very easy to implement; I can come up with a patch if you wish. Of course, multibyte titles would introduce new problems, like a messed up “ti list” output where columns don’t line up any more. But this seems to be a smaller problem than not supporting this stuff at all. I’d love to hear your thoughts on that. It’s now been a month since this mail. Are you still interested in ticgit? It’s no problem if you don’t want to maintain it any more, but it would be useful to sort this out, as I don’t see myself in a position to heavily modify the Debian version of ticgit when patches won’t be incorporated upstream. Bug#471410: Installing accessibility packages by default?
On Thu, Mar 05, 2009 at 01:33:29AM +0100, Samuel Thibault wrote: [Sorry to debian-accessibility people, re-sending with proper To:] Hello, It has been suggested a few times (471410, 511329, 516723) to add an accessibility item to tasksel, which would e.g. install gnome-accessibility. The task would be automatically selected when accessibility features was used during d-i itself. However, Mario Lang raised: `While it is a possible approach to have the installer explicitly select packages for the users who are going to use the machine, it is also obvious that an administrator might not know in advance that a person with special needs is going to use this machine. If we think this through, we realize that what would be most desireable is to have accessibility infrastructure installed by default on a default desktop, so that a person with special needs can just activate it at login time if they need to.' `What if, for example, you walk up to a friend/coworker and talk about some issue. You end up wanting to show them something, so you'd actually like to login on tehir Linux machine with accessibility enabled so that you can work together on the project. However, since nobody thought their machine would ever be used by a disabled person, the necessary software would not be installed.' What does it take to enable them? Furthermore, if you're a blind person using KDE, what good would it do for you that dasher is installed on the system? That is: accessibility sounds to me a bit like l10n: normally no point in installing all of it. Most potential users would need just part of it. -- Tzafrir Cohen | tzaf...@jabber.org | VIM is http://tzafrir.org.il || a Mutt's tzaf...@cohens.org.il || best ICQ# 16849754 || friend -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Same request for debian-{cd,security,volatile} Done. Thanks. Is there a reason we should know to not use ftp.nl.debian.org ? Indeed, ftp.nl.d.o is a very good mirror, with a better availability than mirrors.kernel.org. Yes. ftp.nl.debian.org is *very* slow compared to mirrors.kernel.org. The rsync processes timeout quite often. Maybe investigate if you have some time, because the cause explaining bad speed between you and ftp.nl.d.o may imply bad speed between your mirror and Debian users somewhere in NL. Updates: twice You may setup push mirroring in order to get maximum freshness : http://debian.org/mirrors/push_mirroring Ok, I'll fix that tomorrow :) DO you have news about the push mirroring setup ? Bug#518608: debsums: Please use O_NOATIME when opening files for checksumming
Package: debsums Version: 2.0.41 Severity: wishlist Please use O_NOATIME when opening files for checksumming. Hi Lucas, you're right that this bug has never been meantioned in the changelog. The fix came up by Nion but never made it the way into eighter unstable/testing NOR debian-security for etch at that time. It was a bad timing at all, because two days after Nions NMU I asked fs to sponsor the upload of a complete new upstream release where the bug already has been fixed and I ahdn't even been aware of that bug. From my point of view there are currently two issues to deal with. First and more important: Why is this fix not in debian-security for oldstable? Secondly how to handle the missing changelog entry? However, since nobody thought their machine would ever be used by a disabled person, the necessary software would not be installed.' What does it take to enable them? Let's rather say start them. Furthermore, if you're a blind person using KDE, what good would it do for you that dasher is installed on the system? That is: accessibility sounds to me a bit like l10n: normally no point in installing all of it. Most potential users would need just part of it. That's true indeed. You you never know in advance what kind of accessibility features your users will need. And thus you install it all, just like l10n. Bug#516391: qwertz-de: apostrophe instead of acute on keycode 0x0d
Hi Chris and *, Am 2009-03-07 07:49:40, schrieb Christian Perrier: this is because the X keymap de with nodeadkeys as variant actually outputs an apostrophe *and not an acute*. The de keymap in its basic variant *does* output an acute, on the other hand. That sounds fairly illogical to me...but this is indeed how it is. So, if I take the stance of keeping consistency between X keymaps and console-data keymaps, I should keep apostrophe for the nondeadkeys varianteven if this is weird. So, after thinking, my easoning is that if the nodeadkeys variant should output an acute and not an apostrophethen X keymaps should first be changed. I fully agry with this, since X is more important. Do you forward a request to the X-Team? I second this request. First and more important: Why is this fix not in debian-security for oldstable? not sure. was it fixed in unstable only, or also in stable (at the time)? Secondly how to handle the missing changelog entry? just manually version-close it with the version it was fixed: --- To: nnn-d...@bugs.debian.org Version: 1.1.1.1-1 This bug was fixed in version 1.1.1.1-1 -- | Lucas Nussbaum | lu...@lucas-nussbaum.net http://www.lucas-nussbaum.net/ | | jabber: lu...@nussbaum.fr GPG: 1024D/023B3F4F | -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Romain Beauxis a écrit : [...dh_install failure because of missing *.a files...] Was there any kind of change in the behaviour of dh_install ? AFAICT, dh_install has always failed with wildcards which doesn't expand to anything. What happens often, however, is that you have C bindings in your package, which generate *.a files during compilation. Concerning, the issue of files not compiled on bytecode-only architectures, there is the possibility (added recently in dh-ocaml) to prefix some lines of *.install.in files with OPT: (with the space), which will be deleted during the *.install generation process if ocamlopt is not available. Bug#507248: realtime settings
Hi! First: I'm going to reassign this bug to libpam-modules, since /etc/security/limits.conf isn't owned by jackd. Second: There's usually no need to limit the size of the maximum locked memory. Actually, some programs (ardour?) even print a warning if you do so. Third: with realtime prio, I've never seen the need for special nice levels, so there's probably no use (but danger) in including a nice-line. Anyway, I'm not an expert in this field. Suggestion: add these two lines to limits.conf: @audio - memlock 0 @audio - rtprio 99 IIRC, that's what Ubuntu does. If you want more fine-grained control, add a realtime group and change @audio to @realtime. For most desktop users, realtime audio would be a common case (Fedora does this for pulseaudio), but there might also be non-audio users interested in realtime priorities (think of industry PCs) HTH -- mail: a...@thur.de http://adi.thur.de PGP/GPG: key via keyserver -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe.
