Bug#533842: JFS: fsck should not be skipped on battery power

2009-06-21 Thread Stefan Hornburg (Racke)

Nico Schottelius wrote:

Package: jfsutils
Version: 1.1.12-2
Severity: important

When booting the notebook on battery, Debians fsck-logic prevents
running fsck, which is a major fault on JFS, because the journal
replay is done in fsck.jfs.

Thus skipping fsck.jfs for the root filesystems results in a
unusable system, because / is still mounted read only
(and can only be mounted r/w if the fsck went through).

Therefore fsck.jfs must be run in any case, independent of
battery power or not.

Do you know which part of the boot process determines whether
running fsck or not?

Racke

Yes I do. I will post an temporary URL, once both packages are in NEW.

My motivation really only comes from the wish to be able to upload a
CVS snapshot of exim *with* documentation.

Bug#402340: installing xulrunner does NOT fix that problem

2009-06-21 Thread Erik Meusel
Hi guys,

installing xulrunner does NOT fix that problem. Adding two rows of code to
/usr/bin/eclipse to enable support for icedove's libgtkembedmoz.so and
installing icedove fixes the problem. Using
http://packages.debian.org/search?searchon=contentskeywords=libgtkembedmoz.somode=filenamesuite=unstablearch=any
you could find other locations holding libgtkembedmoz.so, too.

I've attached a patch to solve the issue with icedove's directory. Please fix
that or create a common package which holds libgtkembedmoz.so for all those
projects providing or requesting it.

Thanks,
Erik

Bug#533872: ITP: sdop -- Simple DocBook Processor

2009-06-21 Thread Andreas Metzler
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: sdop
  Version : 0.52
  Upstream Author : Philip Hazel
* License : GPLv2+
  Programming Lang: C
  Description : Simple DocBook Processor

SDoP (Simple DocBook Processor) reads a DocBook XML file, processes it
into typeset pages, and outputs the result as PostScript (which can
easily be converted to a PDF). It is simple because it supports only
a subset of DocBook, and also because it does not make use of a DTD or
stylesheets or any other heavyweight apparatus. It is a single rogram.
SDoP is used to format the Exim reference manual.

Bug#306392: Bug partially fixed

2009-06-21 Thread Ulrich Eckhardt
The introductory sentence to --only-keep-debug, which used to read

Strip a file, removing any sections that would be stripped
by --strip-debug and leaving the debugging sections.

..now contains this text:

Strip a file, removing contents of any sections that would not be
stripped by --strip-debug and leaving the debugging sections intact.

This looks much more sane than before. The other parts of this bug are still
valid though, i.e. the simply typos and the messed up list.

Bug#533873: awesome segfaults (when opening a window?)

2009-06-21 Thread Florian Forster
Package: awesome
Version: 3.2.1-1
Severity: important

Hi,

after a dist-upgrade yesterday, today awesome segfaults. It feels a lot
like the segfault happens as soon as the program tries to open an X
window, but I don't have any evidence for this being the cause. I hear
the hard drive reading the program and the libraries and after the delay
I have learned to be typical for the window to appear for various
applications (I've tested xterm, pidgin and icedove) awesome crashes.
Using the default menu (right click into the root window) works.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to debug this to a satisfactory extend. The
stack backtrace of awesome doesn't hold any helpful information:

From the libraries awesome is linked against (`ldd awesome`), only
libxcb has been upgraded yesterday. The following versions were replaced

Does that mean signing changes the text? I would consider that a

Bug#533842: JFS: fsck should not be skipped on battery power

2009-06-21 Thread Nico Schottelius
Stefan Hornburg (Racke) [Sun, Jun 21, 2009 at 08:37:36AM +0200]:
Do you know which part of the boot process determines whether
 running fsck or not?

Yep:

[10:15] ikn:~% grep -l fsck /etc/init.d/*
/etc/init.d/checkfs.sh
/etc/init.d/checkroot.sh

Which belongs to

[10:15] ikn:~% dpkg -S /etc/init.d/checkfs.sh
initscripts: /etc/init.d/checkfs.sh

I still opened the bug for jfsutils, because this problem only
occurs with JFS, as all other filesystems have their journal
replay in the kernel (ext3,xfs,reiserfs f.i.), but may be reassigned,
as you think it fits best.

Sincerly,

Nico

I guess we should do the same for the Binary: field in the .dsc in that
case. Why did you mention only the .changes ?

Because the changes file is used by dak to check if the upload is sane.
I never looked at the dsc files, because it does not matter. But you are
right, this should be done also.

CCing -policy, do we need to update policy to allow Binary: fields
  over multiple lines?
 Apparently yes, I filed #533852.

It is common sense for changes files. sbuild folds them since a long
time to survive the e-mail transport.

Bug#533874: openoffice.org-calc: Unable to open an URL in iceweasel

2009-06-21 Thread Christian Marillat
Package: openoffice.org-calc
Version: 1:3.1.0-5
Severity: normal

Hi,

Since 3.1 calc is unable to open an url from an hyperlink entry in my
default www-broser defined by sensible-browser.

Apparently openoffice-writer is opened instead and then crash.

Doing an strace like this :

strace -s 80 -a 132 -fo log oocalc file.ods

and then grepping for open-url return nothing.

I was able to solve this problem by exporting BROWSER=iceweasel but
since -5 this doesn't work.

If I remove the openoffice.org-writer package then the url is opened in
iceweasel.

2009-06-21 Thread Matijs van Zuijlen

The swfdec-mozilla plugin often brings my browser's CPU use to 100% even
when not playing (i.e., the grey triangle + circle sign is shown).
Scrolling the page so the plugin is not actually in view reduces the CPU
use back to normal. Switching desktops, however, does not.

The listen program needs to make calls as the root user. One way of doing
this is to make the program setuid root. This is generally a bad idea as
there are better ways, such as using the sudo program, to do this. However,
you have the option of making it setuid root here if you like.

Для того, чтобы звонить, программе listen требуется иметь права

Yes, and the reason for the multi-line support in this field is a
technical reason (line too long for gpg/email transport) so I don't want
to allow it everywhere but only here.

Hi,

You have a build dependency on libc6-dev (= 2.0). This does
not work because libc6-dev isn't available on all arches. It's
name depends on the arch.

Depending on = 2.0 also makes no sense, since that version is
more than 10 years old and will always be available. I suggest
you just removed that build-dependency.

Description : Small and fast daemon for Java applications

jaminid is a very small (and fast) daemon meant to embed in Java applications
 as an add-on HTTP interface.

There are many advantages to using jaminid in your programs:
  * Couples the server as closely as possible to the application.
  * Can easily provide an elegant interface, in a style of programming that is
not at all harder than traditional console I/O.
  * May be used to attach a thin client interface to pre-existing applications
with ease.
  * Enables HTTP deployment without developing an HTTP daemon or knowledge of
the protocols.
  * The server can bundle with the application removing the need of a third
party server. This makes the application easier to distribute.
  * Does not require knowledge of any other scripting language.

The bluetooth device does not appear in /proc/asound/cards, so alsamixer

Mplayer's inbuilt volume control seems to do nothing either.

I can't find any info on the bluetooth wiki or in /usr/share/doc on how
to set up a daemon to listen to AVRP requests either, which is, I think,
why the volume buttons on the headset do nothing.

I seem to be able to adjust volume with current bluez 4, can you retry?

hcitool cc bdaddr gave me the promised link_key_request message
in /var/log/daemon.log. On stderr I got

Can't create connection: Input/output error

There was no message about a pin_code_request, AFAICS. Maybe
the ultra-secret pin of the headset () is hardwired somewhere.
I made sure that /var/lib/bluetooth/bdaddr/pincodes doesn't exist,
but if it is there it doesn't make a difference.

There was no sound. Trying to play a *.mp3 file mplayer showed me

class/langcore.mk sets -g -Wall -O2 without checking whether CC can
actualy process these options. For instance, -g produces output that is
partially GDB-specific. On most GNU software, autotools perform these
check for us and set CC=gcc autogamically. On other software, CC is
often left unset. This is mostly okay on a Debian system, because the
presumption is that CC=gcc, but we can never be sure of what parallel
compilers, etc. someone might run, so it would be desirable for
class/langcore.mk to set CC=gcc is it is unset.

Do you have a concrete counterexample where the current code does not
  work?

In the case where an upstream tarball comes with a single C file and
no Makefile, the only option a maintainer has is to create a manual
build target in debian/rules to compile the binary and to include
class/langcore.mk to always use the standard Debian build options.
However, class/langcore.mk includes GNU-specific options without
checking that the compiler supports them (or at least setting CC=gcc
to ensure that it does), so the build is not guaranteed to succeed.

After further reflection, I think we should change something here.

I turns out that /usr/bin/cc is an alternative, and so we cannot assume that
it is gcc. And although it is not explicitly spelled out in the policy, the
build essential list strongly hints that packages are supposed to be built
with gcc by default.

So I think it would be easy and safe to set CC = gcc near where we set CFLAGS,
and the same for C++.

Another advantage of this would be that packages built with cdbs don't use a
different compiler invocation than those built without.

Bug#487546: [Build-common-hackers] Bug#487546: cdbs: class/langcore.mk should set CC=gcc if CC is not set

2009-06-21 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
2009/6/17 Martin-Éric Racine q-f...@iki.fi:
In the case where an upstream tarball comes with a single C file and
no Makefile, the only option a maintainer has is to create a manual
build target in debian/rules to compile the binary and to include
class/langcore.mk to always use the standard Debian build options.

PS: this is precisely what I've had to do for CUPS-PDF in Debian, that
is, create a compile line in debian/rules and, because langcore.mk
doesn't set CC if it's empty, manually specific CC=gcc in debian/rules
as a kludge.

Are you sure NetworkManager supports the Option 3G modems? If

Bug#533892: rules for Option iCON 225 HSDPA maybe wrong

2009-06-21 Thread W. Martin Borgert
Package: usb-modeswitch
Version: 0.9.7-1
Severity: normal

I have on Option UMTS modem with the USB id 0af0:6971 (output of
lsusb -v attached) plugged in. When I run the command:

# /usr/sbin/usb_modeswitch --DefaultVendor 0x0af0 --DefaultProduct 0x6971
--MessageEndpoint 0x05 --MessageContent
55534243785634120100860100

(as written in /etc/udev/rules.d/usb_modeswitch.rules) I get
error messages:

 * usb_modeswitch: tool for controlling flip flop mode USB devices
 * Version 0.9.7 (C) Josua Dietze 2009
 * Works with libusb 0.1.12 and probably other versions

Trying to send the message to endpoint 0x05 ...
Sending the message returned error -2. Trying to continue
- Run lsusb to note any changes. Bye

This does not look like the right behaviour to me. What does
error -2 mean? When I comment out the respective lines in
/etc/usb_modeswitch.conf, and do not use udev, but run the
command:

# usb_modeswitch

without arguments, I get:

 * usb_modeswitch: tool for controlling flip flop mode USB devices

 * Works with libusb 0.1.12 and probably other versions

Looking for target devices ...

All devices in target class mode. Nothing to do. Bye!

Is the device really supported? Are there maybe wrong parameters?
Esp. I cannot find the MessageContent documented somewhere in the
package, so it's hard to tell, whether there might be an error.

(Minor point, which does not justify a bug report: In both
/etc/udev/rules.d/usb_modeswitch.rules and
/etc/usb_modeswitch.conf, the names of the contributors Bernd
Holzmüller, Flávio Moringa, and Jérôme Oufella are encoded in

Bug#533895: linux-image-2.6.26-2-r4k-ip22: Unable to Access Hardware Clock

2009-06-21 Thread Edwin Kwan
Package: linux-image-2.6.26-2-r4k-ip22
Version: 2.6.26-15lenny3
Severity: important

During boot, I saw this error in syslog:

drivers/rtc/hctosys.c: unable to open rtc device (rtc0)

Consequently hwclock --test --debug would fail.

After switching back to an older kernel (2.6.18-5-r4k-ip22), this problem was
not seen.

I have attached a section of the syslog. It shows 2 boot sequences. The first
one was
from the latest Lenny kernel, and you can look for the string hctosys.
Immediately
following that was a boot sequence from 2.6.18, which did not have this problem.

Bug#533894: initramfs-tools: add support for virtio modules for netbooting

2009-06-21 Thread Michael Prokop
Package: initramfs-tools
Version: 0.93.3
Severity: wishlist

The virtio_pci module is in the 'base' class already (which is
relevant for MODULES=netboot together with class 'net').

Though not all available and necessary virtio drivers are used -
therefore it's not possible to for example boot via PXE in a KVM
virtualiziation environment.

It would be nice to have the full list of virtio drivers
(virtio_blk, virtio_net, virtio_pci and virtio_balloon) included
in MODULES=most and MODULES=netboot.

Credits regarding this issue go to Daniel Weuthen.

regards,
-mika-

output that is partially GDB-specific. On most GNU software,
autotools perform these check for us and set CC=gcc autogamically.
On other software, CC is often left unset. This is mostly okay on
a Debian system, because the presumption is that CC=gcc, but we
can never be sure of what parallel compilers, etc. someone might
run, so it would be desirable for class/langcore.mk to set CC=gcc
  is it is unset.

Do you have a concrete counterexample where the current code does
  not work?

In the case where an upstream tarball comes with a single C file and
no Makefile, the only option a maintainer has is to create a manual
build target in debian/rules to compile the binary and to include
class/langcore.mk to always use the standard Debian build options.
However, class/langcore.mk includes GNU-specific options without
checking that the compiler supports them (or at least setting CC=gcc
to ensure that it does), so the build is not guaranteed to succeed.

After further reflection, I think we should change something here.

I turns out that /usr/bin/cc is an alternative, and so we cannot assume
that it is gcc. And although it is not explicitly spelled out in the
policy, the build essential list strongly hints that packages are
supposed to be built with gcc by default.

So I think it would be easy and safe to set CC = gcc near where we set
CFLAGS, and the same for C++.

Another advantage of this would be that packages built with cdbs don't
use a different compiler invocation than those built without.

A build environment using a different C compiler than the default gcc as
cc is broken with respect to Package compilation. (I believe that to be
in Policy somewhere too).

I do not see it as the task of CDBS to fix/overrule broken build
environments.

can you reproduce with bluez 4 in unstable?

 filippo

Hi Filippo,

The problem is still there but this is the real issue; The bluez
developers found a critical bug in the alsa api system that makes audio
systems crash in some situation on i368 and on powerpc or arm it will
not even work.

So the bluez developers decided together with the alsa developpers to
force a more stricture api use to fix the crashes.

The result; correctly totem-xine does not even work anymore with bluez
and alsa. If you reverse the patch on the bluez code that allow the
incorrect alsa use then the behavior described in the original bug
report will occur.

So the solution is to fix the totem-xine alsa implementation so the new
bluez code will work again and the above bug will be fixed.

see:
http://git.kernel.org/?p=bluetooth/bluez.git;a=commitdiff;h=593bd41ed861d80f498fa8cfe0cea06e0c11f442
http://mailman.alsa-project.org/pipermail/alsa-devel/2009-February/014392.html

git revert 593bd41ed861d80f498fa8cfe0cea06e0c11f442

You can ask on #bluez for more information

I really hope some developer can fix the alsa implementation in
totem-xine so I and all other bluez users can use totem-xine again
without continuing crashes.

Thanks in advance,

Best regards,

Jelle de Jong

Do not panic, this is a common problem.
The commonest cause is a missing JAR.

This is not a bug; it is a configuration problem

Bug#533897: uswsusp: s2ram broken by incompatible ABI upgrade of libx86 (s2ram: undefined symbol: LRMI_base_addr)

2009-06-21 Thread Andreas Mohr
Package: uswsusp
Version: 0.8-1.1+b1

Hi,

/var/log/dpkg.log showed a libx86-1 upgrade

2009-06-21 12:16:18 upgrade libx86-1 1.1+ds1-2 1.1+ds1-3

which caused pm-suspend to fail (do-nothing return):
/var/log/pm-suspend.log showed
s2ram: symbol lookup error: s2ram: undefined symbol: LRMI_base_addr

Reverting to libx86-1 1.1+ds1-2 fixed the problem.

Needs a uswsusp package rebuild I guess.
OTOH this strongly sounds like an illegal ABI breakage of libx86 during
minor upgrade.

Thanks,

Andreas Mohr

Uh... well... are you sure ?

Bug#531090: bla

2009-06-21 Thread Friedrich Delgado Friedrichs
reassign 531090 linux-image-2.6.30-1-486
thanks

This also happens with 2.6.30-1-486. However after resume, there's a
series of kernel oopses on the console, which unfortunately didn't go
to any logfile (0 pointer dereference in the kernel), directly after
reinitialization of opl3sa2.

Also it appears that other subsystems of the kernel stopped working
properly as well, since I wasn't able to 'less /var/log/syslog' and
reboot (I had to alt-sysrq-sync/umount and then hold the off-switch
for 4 seconds).

So this is a lot worse with 2.6.30 than with 2.6.29.

Since I had no other way of capturing those logs, I took a series of
actual photographs of the kernel messages on the console. Please tell
me if you want to look at them. And of course I'll happily provide any
other information that might be helpful.

Looks like I'll be downgrading to 2.6.22 or the highest kernel that
does not exhibit this bug.

Kind regards
 Friedel

Bug#531371: `mount -o loop' runs out of loop devices

Just rechecking this issue, and it no longer occurs for me:

% uname -a
Linux ravenclaw 2.6.30-1-amd64 #1 SMP Sun Jun 14 15:00:29 UTC 2009 x86_64
GNU/Linux
% ls -l /etc/mtab
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 12 2009-06-21 13:29 /etc/mtab - /proc/mounts
% dd if=/dev/zero of=/tmp/l1 bs=1024 count=4096
% /sbin/mkfs -t ext2 /tmp/l1
% sudo mount -o loop /tmp/l1 /mnt
% sudo losetup -a
/dev/loop0: [0011]:175224 (/tmp/l1)
% grep /mnt /etc/mtab /proc/mounts
/etc/mtab:/dev/loop0 /mnt ext2 rw,relatime,errors=continue 0 0
/proc/mounts:/dev/loop0 /mnt ext2 rw,relatime,errors=continue 0 0
% sudo umount /mnt
% sudo losetup -a
% grep /mnt /etc/mtab /proc/mounts
%

I get the same loopback release with /etc/mtab as a regular file.

This may be due to the new kernel or new util-linux in unstable,
but it is now freeing the loop devices correctly. It must be in
the new util-linux, because it's putting the loop device, rather
than the loopback filename, as the source in /etc/mtab such that
it always matches /proc/mounts. Previously they differed, and
this resulted in the loop device not being freed when the loop
device was used. This is no longer the case. (I'm not familiar
with the util-linux source, but I can't actually see this change
and it /looks/ like it uses the old behaviour, but this may be
just a special case for certain use cases. The observed
behaviour is what we want though!)

Dmitry, can you confirm this on your system? Your bug report
shows you are using stable; do you have a system running
unstable you can check on (or if anyone else can check this as
I have above?)

Since this was IIRC the only blocker for #494001 (replacing
/etc/mtab with a symlink), it looks like this can now go
ahead if anyone else can confirm the loop issue is fixed.

Roger

a new feature in the package configuration scripts that allows pulling
the hosts to configure from the DynDNS web page.

Did you update the debconf settings for ddclient 3.8.0-3 or are you using
the debconf settings which worked with some older version (= 3.8.0-1)?

Bug#533901: user mounts broken when /proc/mounts is a symlink

/proc/mounts:/dev/sr0 /media/cdrom0 udf ro,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime,utf8 0 0

As you can see, /proc/mounts does not contain a user=rleigh option,
and as a result, I'm not permitted to umount /media/cdrom0.

This information should be recorded in /proc/mounts now that this
information can be passed to mount(2). The same goes for any other
information currently only saved in /etc/mtab. /etc/mtab will be
linked to /proc/mounts very soon, and all these bugs in mount need
fixing.

Okay, so the result is no wonder as that mode of installation is not
currently taken into account for the maintainer scripts.

I am not sure if it is required by policy that this installation mode
should work. It would surely be nice if it could cope but I am not sure
how to implement that.

Any idea how that should work out? I guess I should detect that the
question was skipped and just pretend that the user did not want to
run ddclient. But this way the package will look like it was configured
while it in fact does not have a config file.

When the vnc server changes to smaller resolution vncviewer just
displays it in top left corener of the previous larger window.

When the server changes to a larger resolution vncviewer exits.

What's so difficult about resizing the window?

This would probably apply to the case when scrollbars make the client
area smaller but the window is not resized accordingly.

Bug#533903: initramfs-tools: support different compression tools in mkinitramfs

2009-06-21 Thread Michael Prokop
Package: initramfs-tools
Version: 0.93.3
Severity: wishlist

Current kernel versions support different decompression options for
kernel and initrd:

  CONFIG_DECOMPRESS_GZIP
  CONFIG_DECOMPRESS_BZIP2
  CONFIG_DECOMPRESS_LZMA

initramfs-tools currently supports gzip only. I'd like to see
support for bzip2 and lzma as well, as both of them provide better
compression (which is especially interesting for live systems).

IMHO the user should get gzip by default (if unset) but be able to
choose between gzip, bzip2 and lzma. Something like
COMPRESSION=[gzip|bzip2|lzma] in /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf
should provide that.

I plan to provide the according code for integration (though I'm
running out of time right now, so it might need a few days/weeks).
Please ACK my idea if that's in your interest. If have any special
configuration variable / implementation wishes please let me know.

In the clone(2) man page, sys_clone is described (the kernel level system

The first paragraph claims that sys_clone only has the flags and child stack

The third paragraph says that kernel 2.5.49 added two more arguments, making

Either an argument is missing from the description, or someone made an

I think it's a case of bit rot. 2.5.32 added 1 new argument; 2.5.49
added two more. But much of the text in the paragraph that you refer
is repeated elsewhere in the page, si I've simplified that paragraph
to this:
