I was indeed expecting 3.5.7 to come out before the hard freeze. As it is less and less likely to happen (seeing no signs of preparation in the Samba Team mailing lists, probably because the Samba release manager is busy with real life), I will probably consider including that fix. I'm still hoping to be able to convince Debian RMs to accept 3.5.7 if it comes out before the full hard freeze of squeeze, but that's not something we can really deeply rely upon. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

A problem with doing this, though not one likely to affect systems managed by dpkg is that if git-annex were to become temporarily not accessible (perhaps due to an upgrade in progress), and a commit happened at just the wrong time, and there were unlocked files, the pre-commit cleanup would not happen and the full file contents would be checked into git. Bug#493481: rxvt-unicode: Apply patch for 256 colors support

I see two options from here: 1) recompile all flavors with 256 colors enabled and update the terminfo entry up to the latest 256-colors upstream version, or 2) hardcode different TERM names for different flavors, update the terminfo entry up to the latest 88-colors upstream version and introduce another entry for 256-colored flavor's TERM name. If it can't be marked pre-depends, it's probably best to have the post-install script recognize this situation when it occurs (by checking the package installation state of postgresql-8.4 or other relevant packages) and acting accordingly. Assuming it's already possible to install bacula-director-pgsql without postgresql, there shouldn't be much of a change required to recognize a partially-installed package and skip the database configuration. [2]): i. The programmable completion code now uses the same set of characters as readline when breaking the command line into a list of words. But it's really easy to misinterpret this statement, because there is and there was a $COMP_WORDBREAKS, so the first thing that comes to mind is that the set of characters in $COMP_WORDBREAKS is changed, leaving you puzzled for weeks when you discover that the set of characters is still the same. While this is a nice idea, there are too many programs (particularly quickly-written ones with no argument handling - exactly the kinds of programs that often don't have manual pages) that don't accept --help and just ignore the option and carry on. People expect man to be an absolutely safe thing to run, and this could well end up performing destructive actions; you might argue that such programs are buggy, of course, but it would be too late for the users affected. I'll leave the bug open with the wontfix tag by way of documentation, but I don't plan to implement this. I tried the patch using network-manager_0.8.1-4.debian.tar.gz network- manager_0.8.1.orig.tar.gz on testing/squeeze, and it works for me. The patch applied with an offset of -2 lines on both hunks in system- settings/plugins/ifupdown/plugin.c. Then I compiled the package with "dpkg- buildpackage -b". I have installed the locally built packages, NetworkManager was started as a daemon and my wlan0 connection remained intact. I have attached the relevant bit of /var/log/daemon.log. To make the counter-test I have re-installed network-manager from packages.debian.org and the connection dropped immediately after the installation of the package. Thanks for looking into this. Bug#605744: breaks-without-version does not make much sense in many cases
Package: lintian Version: 2.4.3 Severity: normal Hello, I don't think that breaks-without-version makes much sense, especially after policy 3.9.0 has clarified Replaces/Breaks/Conflicts usage. At least, it should not be a "warning" as it says nothing about quality of the package and in many cases it could be misleading. Breaks is more package manager friendly relationship when it comes to upgrades and there is absolutely nothing wrong with having Breaks without version in almost all (if not all) cases when Replaces for the same package is also present. One of the most common example from my experience is the following: Suppose you want to split a package (app-common) into smaller parts (app-data and app-doc). Then a very apt-friendly approach (in the spirit of policy 3.9.0) would be: Package: app-data Replaces: app-common Breaks: app-common Package: app-doc Replaces: app-common Breaks: app-common However, instead lintian suggests using Conflicts here which clearly contradicts policy 7.4 recommendation: -- Normally, Breaks should be used instead of Conflicts since Conflicts imposes a stronger restriction on the ordering of package installation or upgrade and can make it more difficult for the package manager to find a correct solution to an upgrade or installation problem. Breaks should be used: * when moving a file from one package to another (see Overwriting files and replacing packages - Replaces, Section 7.6), * when splitting a package (a special case of the previous one), or -- I could also think of more examples with moving of files if needed. So generally I have a couple of suggestions here. They are listed in the order of my preference: * Drop breaks-without-version completely (at least for 3.9.0 compliant packages). * Do not emit breaks-without-version when the same package is found in Replaces field (provided it's not Breaks/Replaces against itself). Though I still prefer complete removal of breaks-without-version as I don't believe it makes much sense in general (as it's worded) and it's too prone to false positives. * Downgrade breaks-without-version to info/pedantic level. This would be the worst case scenario but I could probably accept it as I generally do not care much about false positives at those levels. -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (100, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.36-trunk-amd64 (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=lt_LT.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=lt_LT.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages lintian depends on: ii binutils 2.20.1-15 The GNU assembler, linker and bina ii diffstat 1.53-1produces graph of changes introduc ii dpkg-dev 1.15.8.6 Debian package development tools ii file 5.04-5Determines file type using "magic" ii gettext0.18.1.1-3GNU Internationalization utilities ii intltool-debian0.35.0+20060710.1 Help i18n of RFC822 compliant conf ii libapt-pkg-perl0.1.24+b1 Perl interface to libapt-pkg ii libclass-accessor-perl 0.34-1Perl module that automatically gen ii libipc-run-perl0.89-1Perl module for running processes ii libparse-debianchangel 1.1.1-2.1 parse Debian changelogs and output ii libtimedate-perl 1.2000-1 collection of modules to manipulat ii liburi-perl1.56-1module to manipulate and access UR ii locales2.11.2-7 Embedded GNU C Library: National L ii man-db 2.5.7-6 on-line manual pager ii perl [libdigest-sha-pe 5.10.1-16 Larry Wall's Practical Extraction lintian recommends no packages. Bug#563260: /etc/cron.daily/htdig generates lock-related error message
Zaar Hai wrote: > htdig seems to be installed as part of KDE. I've never changed any > htdig configs. However, each morning, I have this email from cron > in my box: > > /etc/cron.daily/htdig: > /etc/cron.daily/htdig: line 26: 10138 Terminated lockfile-touch > /var/run/htdig.cron I am also seeing this problem. I have been ignoring it for a bit but then finally decided to look into it. The problem only exists on systems where /bin/sh is linked to bash, which are a very many systems. Bash always prints the status of killed processes when those processes are killed with any signal other than SIGINT or SIGPIPE. This is arguably a bug in bash. But it seems unlikely to be fixed. Here is a reference. http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-bash/2006-09/msg00073.html Alternate Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/bug-b...@gnu.org/msg02013.html I can see in /etc/cron.daily/htdig that someone was trying to supress this error by redirecting the output of the 'kill' to /dev/null. kill "${BADGER}" >/dev/null 2>&1 The redirection of the kill error output is incorrect. It is not the kill process that is emitting the terminated message. It is the shell interpreter that is running the script that is monitoring the background status of the previous lockfile-touch command that is emitting the message. In order to have the shell avoid the message it is necessary to redirect the output of the running shell to /dev/null and then kill the background job. exec 2>/dev/null kill "${BADGER}" If that is at the end of the script then that is good enough. Let it fall off the end of the script. If there are more commands to be run however then saving and restoring stderr may be more correct. But it is a lot of lines of code for little benefit. if [ -n "$BASH_VERSION" ]; then exec 3>&2 exec 2>/dev/null fi kill "${BADGER}" wait if [ -n "$BASH_VERSION" ]; then exec 2>&3 exec 3>&- fi lockfile-remove $HOME/tmp/foo Therefore I suggest using the other solution. Instead of killing with the default SIGTERM kill with an explicit SIGINT. Bash will not produce a status message about processes killed with either SIGINT or SIGPIPE. SIGINT is a reasonable signal to use. It greatly simplifies the script error handling. kill -s INT "${BADGER}" lockfile-remove /var/run/htdig.cron That is much the simpler way! Also the unconditional creation of the lockfile even when it isn't needed isn't optimal. Currently the script creates a lockfile first. Then it checks to see if it should run. If so it calls rundig. Then it removes the lockfile and exits. But by default run_rundig is false and so nothing is ever run unless it is configured to do so but regardless the lockfile is unnecessarily created. Here is a patch that corrects the terminated message bug reported here and also orders the actions differently so that no lockfile is attempted if not needed. I would actually like to do more but the script is so small I couldn't bring myself to completely rewriting it. I read through the mail notification, after bigon updated the status, and used the provided link, to: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=519614 From here, the links back to the list of bugs in "Package: libnotify; Maintainer for libnotify […]" have no dist= at all. Bug#605731: rsync client can no longer handle rsync:// targets
On Thu 02 Dec 2010, Zed Pobre wrote: > > The problem resolved down to rsync 3.0.3-2 accepting the following: > > rsync rsync://:: > > and 3.0.7-2 does not. That 3.0.3-2 accepted that syntax was an "undocumented feature". Nowhere in the documentation does it say that it is OK to mix rsync:// and :: notation. In fact, it explicitly states: Contacting an rsync daemon directly happens when the source or destination path contains a double colon (::) separator after a host specification, OR when an rsync:// URL is specified Note the "OR" in capital letters. That said, I agree that it's not nice that rsync has changed what it accepts as an argument. On the other hand I don't think that a change that enforces the documented syntax more strongly, such that unrelated software that used that undocumented syntax is now broken, constitutes a critical bug in rsync. Perhaps a wishlist bug. The real bug is in the software that was written without reading the rsync manual carefully. Unfortunately the various su tools have incompatible command line interfaces (which is the main reason su-to-root exist instead of using update-alternatives). However, /etc/su-to-rootrc is sourced by su-to-root, so you can add whatever bash code you want to it, including gksu() { gksudo "$@"; } > At the moment, I'm having problems w/ gksu and wondering why I can't > just set SU_TO_ROOT_X=sudo (using passwordless sudo). As I > understand it, su-to-root doesn't enforce any security, it lets the > backend handle it. You cannot set SU_TO_ROOT_X to sudo, because sudo is not an X program. Instead you can do SU_TO_ROOT_X=su-to-root SU_TO_ROOT_SU=sudo Which will call sudo in an X terminal. Now, I have no objection to add gksudo/kdesudo to su-to-root, but it would be nice if d-i would configure su-to-root to use *sudo when the root-passwordless option is chosen. Bug#604172: lincity-ng crash (easyly reproducible)

Bug#563559: puppet - Does not start after upgrade
Hi: I've been surprised by the default to "no" too. While I understand why that's the case (so there's no chance to hijack the system by a rogue puppetmaster upon puppet client installalation), I don't see why the option is not managed by debconf defaulting to "no" (won't start at boot time). This way, you can have a secured install on unmanaged environments while making things easier for those that understand the implications but still want/need the package to autoconfigure the system when installed (currently it basically blocks an automatic deploy unless you release a local puppet package). The default (http://bugs.debian.org/libnotify) view goes to http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?package=libnotify;dist=unstable Otherwise you're showing a view which only considers -done vs non -done. > It may also be interesting to improve the documentation on this > "Outstanding + crossed-out" case, or move these bugs in a third > category ("Partialy Fixed Bugs" for example), so as to avoid non-DD > bugreporters to be mislead. Bug#603161: Some program windows clip faulty in Squeeze (with fvvmw)
Just a short addendum: There have been recently a couple of updates related to X (which I got by `aptitude update ; aptitude safe-upgrade'), but the problem persists. Some plugins are not DFSG compliant, so I have to put this apart. The fix for that bug looks wrong (or at least incomplete) - the report is about a problem purging the package due to ucf not being available and the chosen solution is to add a dependency on ucf; however, as ucf is not essential, the postrm cannot rely on it being available during purge even with the dependency.
