Bug#607488: ITP: geoip-database-contrib -- MaxMind GeoIP (lite) binary database downloader script
Ludovico Cavedon schrieb am Sunday, den 19. December 2010: Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist Owner: Ludovico Cavedon cave...@debian.org * Package name: geoip-database-contrib Version : 1.0 Upstream Author : Ludovico Cavedon cave...@debian.org * URL : http://git.debian.org/?p=collab-maint/geoip-database-contrib.git * License : GPL-2+ Programming Lang: bash Description : MaxMind GeoIP (lite) binary database downloader script GeoIP is a C library that enables the user to find the country that any IP address or hostname originates from. It uses a file-based database. . This package contains a script that downloads the latest version of the binary flavour of the MaxMind GeoLite databases. In particular: - GeoLite Country - GeoLite Country IPv6 - GeoLite City - GeoLite ASN . This database simply contains IP blocks as keys, and countries/cities/ASNs as values and it should be more complete and accurate than using reverse DNS lookups. . The MaxMind database itself is distributed under a BSD-like license. However it is made available in binary only format and the source code for generating it is not provided. What makes this better than geoipupdate from the geoip-bin package? Alex -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Christian, thank you for your report. There is already a package on mentors that is waiting for sponsorship and that should address your issue. I'm still a bit surprised by your report. Would you please be so kind to tell me if you udev, makedev or both installed? I think you were explicitly installing the previously uninstalled capiutils package, correct? Package: release.debian.org Severity: normal User: release.debian@packages.debian.org Usertags: unblock Please unblock package eject This NMU brings in several debconf translations that were pending in the git repository (mostly committed by me with agreement by Frank Lichtenheld). I finally uploaded an NMU as Frank apparently couldn't do an upload himself. Bug#607368: Kernel ABI management
Ben Hutchings b...@decadent.org.uk wrote: Hi, Good luck with that, it's been tried already with EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL() and people still do work around that. That is probably copyright infringement. Maybe, maybe not. Nobody actually really knows. It sounds like you should really be using ESX/vSphere on the host, rather than VMware Server on Debian. I mean, VMware Server is basically demo-ware. That's VMware Player/Workstation running on workstations, not servers, actually. So no, we don't need ESX/vSphere. Where are your bug reports on nouveau? I don't think there is any value in reporting that an nVidia card that was released last month doesn't work with nouveau. I think the nouveau folks do know it's not supported without me telling them. Binary-only drivers for Linux are generally copyright infringements. If Says you. Again, nobody really knows. Some may very well be infringing copyrights, sure. we break them: good. (I know nvidia provides a Linux-specific stub as source and it might be an exception to this.) You can be assured that I share your feelings towards binary-only drivers. I'm pretty disappointed by the way you're handling this; it feels like you have little care for what your users actually need. We do, just not all of what *you* (one of our users) want. Yeah, I'm probably the only Debian folk out there that has to support a thousand workstations with VMware. We should definitely move to RedHat, or something. I copied grub packages to archives directory and regenerated /target/var/cache/apt/pkgcache.bin file by hand using in-target command, but no success. I grep pkgcache.bin. It only found grub package and not grub-pc package. I don't know if this is correct or no. Bye

Bug#605122: excessive logging of Network is unreachable fills up /var[/log/clamav/freshclam.log]
Package: clamav-freshclam Severity: normal Hello, although I purged freshclam (and clamav) from my system, a /usr/bin/freshclam -d --quiet process was left running, which kept the huge freshclam.log open, which left its disk space in /var/ allocated although I had deleted the file manually. freshclam being purged meant that the stop script in /etc/init.d was not there anymore to be used to shut freshclam down; killing the freshclam process manually obviously put an end to all the sufferings and freed that 1.2Gb I needed in my /var. I personally have no problems dealing with a scenario of disk space is not freed while the file is still open coupled with purging freshclam leaves the daemon running and freshclam keeps its logfile open all the time, but I can see how it all can cause a rather bad friday afternoon to many, especiall because at that point du and friends will not show you where the disk space is used anymore :( Ciao, Enrico -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-5-amd64 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_GB.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_GB.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages clamav-freshclam depends on: pn clamav-base none (no description available) ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.5.36 Debian configuration management sy ii libc6 2.11.2-7 Embedded GNU C Library: Shared lib pn libclamav6 none (no description available) ii logrotate 3.7.8-6 Log rotation utility ii lsb-base3.2-23.1 Linux Standard Base 3.2 init scrip ii ucf 3.0025+nmu1 Update Configuration File: preserv ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3.4.dfsg-3 compression library - runtime clamav-freshclam recommends no packages. Bug#607516: extlinux-update manipulates boot files in unsafe ways
Package: extlinux Version: 2:4.02+dfsg-7 Severity: important Tags: squeeze update-extlinux script modifies boot-related files in unsafe ways, which is a good way to make system unbootable: it re-creates several files in /boot/extlinux/ by zeroing the content at start and adding information to them piece by piece. In case of a power failure during this time, the system will be unbootable. We're talking about the need to perform f(data)sync() on important files to ensure data integrity, but this case is much more important since it affects whole system, but here, file manipulation is much less safe than just omitting fsync. The rigth way to create these files is to create a temp file first, and when it's done, rename it into place atomically. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. I discovered this while trying (something like) this: EXTLINUX_MENU_LABEL=Debian GNU/Linux, node $(cat /var/run/nodeinfo), kernel which evaluates to different things (running several nodes from a common image). But once something calls update-extlinux on the master node, the variable is not evaluated anymore on the other nodes. Besides, I had a few things on that file which tried to create valid menu system without help of the themes - since on our small terminals in server room I can't use vesamenu which is used by syslinux themes. Bug#607518: kaffeine: DVB-T Channel switching results in Read Error from
Package: kaffeine Version: 1.0-2 Severity: important Hi, this bug appeared a few months ago through an update and hasn't been fixed ever since. It causes the video to freeze, but doesn't freeze kaffeine itself. To reproduce, do the following steps: 1. Switch to a random channel 2. When it's on, change to a channel on the same frequency 3. Receive nothing, except a Read error from: after 30 seconds To recover, either close kaffeine and reopen it, or do the following: 1. Switch to a random channel 2. Switch to a different channel on a different(!) frequency 3. When you hear the speakers click, switch to your desired channel. On a side note: When closing kaffeine before the 30 sec timeout kicks in, KDE is briefly busy deleting the file : I guess this behavior came with the drop of all the video options in kaffeine and some default-option that I changed prior is now different. This bug stayed even after resetting the entire kde-config. I use a Terratec Cinergy T2 USB. Marco sent in patches for git-buildpackage (to recreate the tarballs) a while ago which I'll attach here so they don't get lost. I'd welcome feedback if this is how people would use multiple tarballs. E.g. I'm not sure if we want to push all tarballs deltas onto the same pristine-tar branch. Bug#607329: cpufrequtils should use /etc/default

Actually I did. You should be aware that you have a high priority question (tftpd-hpa/directory) that I get asked every time I install the package then. :) Also, you don't validate a single value of those the user provides and this is as friendly as letting users use $editor to configure the package (maybe worse). For cpufreq, validating values or providing valid values for users to select from is a lot of guess work. My opinion is that trying to do that would cause more problems than it solves and again that's why, as I initially said, implementing a configuration interface for it would not be worth. It would also not be as trivial as you make it sound. ... For now I won't fix this bug, in the future I may consider adding low priority debconf questions to autogenerate the config file and keep those questions away from users not interested in it. that's excately what i was telling you all the time. you couldn't just say 'yes, i'll do so', couldn't you? -- mattia :wq! -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. As I understand it, 9fa0e180 may even fix this problem. Thanks! The patch applies cleanly to 2.3-4, and I can confirm that the it fixes the issue completely for me. (For the sake of completeness: I built the modified parted on zelenka.d.o without the build dependencies libblkid-dev and check. They don't seem to matter in this case.) I'm attaching the patch for convenience and reassigning this to parted. Setting the severity to 'serious' as it looks like this breaks d-i on s390 for everybody and not just hercules users. Parted maintainers: feel free to downgrade if this is inflated, and please let me know if I can help further in any way. Thanks for spotting this. I agree with the severity, and am preparing an updated package now. -- Colin Watson [cjwat...@debian.org] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#607523: FTBFS with linker flag --as-needed
Package: abr2gbr Version: 1:1.0.2-2 Severity: wishlist Tags: patch Hi, abr2gbr fails to build, if --as-needed is used as a linker flag [1,2]. Bug#603986: qgis crashes on startup on PowerPC
Hi ppc porters, Forwarded from Bug#603986, tags 603986 + help thanks I personally have not access to a PPC to do any trial, and using qgis in remote would be a pain, I guess. It seems Heisenbug Principle in this case applies, too. Maybe we should remove qgis for this arch and wait some porters have time and will to help? Bug#558703: Patch doesn't seem correct
I've looked at the provided patch, and I don't think it's correct. First of all, we have vsscanf in glibc, so there's no reason that we should need to provide one. Second, if this code is built as a shared library, which I believe it is, then we've just exported a symbol by removing the static. That's bad because (a) it conflicts with glibc, which may cause linking problems and crashes, and (b) other shared libraries may use this vsscanf, which will not work if there are more than five stdarg arguments. The right way to fix this is to find out why HAVE_VSSCANF is not be defined properly. -- brian m. carlson / brian with sandals: Houston, Texas, US +1 832 623 2791 | http://www.crustytoothpaste.net/~bmc | My opinion only OpenPGP: RSA v4 4096b: 88AC E9B2 9196 305B A994 7552 F1BA 225C 0223 B187 signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Is this a localization issue that can be fixed upstream in Ohai? Well chef was not in lenny either, and has a similarly low popcon count. It could be considered for removal from squeeze as well, especially at this late stage in the squeeze release. On Sun, Nov 14, 2010 at 08:33:01PM -0700, Joshua Timberman wrote: The JSON gem has a history of issues, and while it seems that 1.1.9 may otherwise be stable, it is a year old and has a lot of improvements. So far I have not seen any issues with version 1.4.6, in ohai or otherwise. I hope that Debian can make an exception for getting the latest version into Squeeze. As the package maintainer for ohai, I don't think that patching ohai to workaround this bug is appropriate. I doubt that the Release Team would accept a new upstream version now (nor do I think they would've accepted it a month ago), so that is not really an option. One suggestion, made by Neil Williams, was to patch ohai to output a useful error message when it encounters an invalid character. In other words, replace the fairly meaningless exception with a useful error message, detailing what the problem is (invalid utf-8 character) and the file/line of the problem. IMO this would make the bug non-RC, as it should make it obvious to the user how to fix the problem. Is that something that would be quick and easy for you to do? I had a quick look at the ohai source to see if I could provide a patch, but I'm not familiar enough with the source or Ruby itself to work out where to modify it. If the above is not possible, I return to my previous suggestion of removing ohai chef from squeeze. Once wheezy is up and running, there should be no problem getting the new libjson-ruby package in. There's always the option of providing packages via backports.debian.org once squeeze is released. -- Chris Butler chr...@debian.org GnuPG Key ID: 4096R/49E3ACD3 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. On Sun, 2010-12-19 at 13:19 +, Jonathan Wiltshire wrote: Please remove minitube from testing pending a new upstream. The maintainer approves and will seek to get it into volatile instead, because of the unstable API - see #606670. Apologies for not spotting the issue earlier, but those two requests are incompatible. Starting with the squeeze release, what is currently the separate volatile archive will be replaced with a new ${suite}-updates suite hosted on the standard ftp mirrors (see 20101005202925.gu4...@halon.org.uk , d-d-a, 2010-10-05). This will expose a subset of the packages in proposed-updates so that users can still choose to easily updates packages such as clamav or tzdata without pulling in the rest of p-u and simplifies the process of ensuring that any such updates make it in to stable proper. As a side-effect, it will not be possible to include packages which are not part of the corresponding stable release. If we remove minitube from Squeeze now, further updates once Squeeze is stable would then need to be made via backports, rather than volatile. I have no particular preference which route is taken, but thought it was worth spelling out the consequences. Bug#597933: Non-free files distributed in sdcc
Hi Sorry for my silence but I have made a new 2.9.0+dfsg-1 version of the package that can be found at http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/s/sdcc please take a look at it an give me a comment. I hope to convince the release team to include it if I'm not too late. Regards Gudjon
Bug#607532: console-setup create empty keymap when reconfiguring (or upgrading)
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA512 Package: console-setup Version: 1.64 Severity: normal When dpkg-reconfigure console-setup is run it ends in an empty /etc/console-setup/cached.kmap.gz (well, an empty, compressed file size 20 bytes to be correct). While reconfigure I get a warning: /usr/bin/ckbcomp: garbage in a key definition: actions[Group1]=[SetMods(modifiers=Shift),SetMods(modifiers=Shift+Lock,clearLocks)], in shift. but the return code of dpkg-reconfigure is 0. This is even worse than the keymap in /etc/console/boottime.kmap.gz stays correct and is the expected keymap. There is no evidence that a empty keymap named cached is read at start unless debugging the startup. - -- System Information: Debian Release: 6.0 APT prefers unstable APT policy: (800, 'unstable'), (700, 'stable'), (60, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.34 (SMP w/8 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=de_DE, LC_CTYPE=de_DE (charmap=ISO-8859-1) (ignored: LC_ALL set to de_DE) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages console-setup depends on: ii console-terminus 4.30-2 Fixed-width fonts for fast reading ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.5.37 Debian configuration management sy ii keyboard-configuration1.64 system-wide keyboard preferences ii xkb-data 1.8-2 X Keyboard Extension (XKB) configu Versions of packages console-setup recommends: ii console-tools1:0.2.3dbs-69.1 Linux console and font utilities Versions of packages console-setup suggests: ii locales 2.11.2-7 Embedded GNU C Library: National L ii lsb-base 3.2-26 Linux Standard Base 3.2 init scrip - -- debconf information: * console-setup/codeset47: # Latin1 and Latin5 - western Europe and Turkic languages console-setup/use_system_font: console-setup/fontsize: 16 console-setup/codesetcode: Lat15 console-setup/store_defaults_in_debconf_db: true * console-setup/fontface47: Terminus console-setup/fontsize-text47: 16 * console-setup/charmap47: ISO-8859-1 * console-setup/fontsize-fb47: 16 - -- Klaus Ethgenhttp://www.ethgen.de/ pub 2048R/D1A4EDE5 2000-02-26 Klaus Ethgen kl...@ethgen.de Fingerprint: D7 67 71 C4 99 A6 D4 FE EA 40 30 57 3C 88 26 2B -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.4.10 (GNU/Linux) iQEVAwUBTQ4il5+OKpjRpO3lAQpyxgf/epugipxmz0Nt05Ol/u5Lm6N5KCa888H9 lGMg+FWkzVe4mD9nXuM8ipt6/Dm7Dn9EC2OLl6mZcw4ETJV8uPXLkCdiPVNEiebU TEH7rDJdQFpU/Dlh6yrI3mwUIywvBLCKNvNWf2C9uLuq7oJ/iPRUJBAro+4e8ZNr rIBub9FDvReKYrx+LWreY5ARxPXoOmAi+ZpkxBbwayUst4KkcnneySJBAAJXEoYZ /Fc0BB78sBOcL4f7dnGzP1urtdbtcZGB6dO1cKvcoSW4ywn3GkTQdypgQ4+fVcfd 49uDmDrx84Vyw/rrTu3I5A9LYAvDtlk3UWE/5j/OAI8ldI6yDJMyQg== =PfCT -END PGP SIGNATURE- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#607535: [aeskulap] FTBFS with linker flag --as-needed
Package: aeskulap Version: 0.2.2b1-6 Severity: wishlist Tags: patch Hi, aeskulap fails to build from source, if --as-needed is used as linker flag [1,2]. Bug#607536: partman-auto: Do not automatically select the correct disk when using isohybrid ISO on USB stick
Package: partman-auto Version: 95 User: debian-...@lists.debian.org UserTags: debian-edu The automatic partition in Debian Edu/Squeeze do not work completely automatically when using our isohybrid ISO as a USB stick. The reason is that the USB stick is seen as a useful disk to use, and because this cause more than one disk to be found, a debconf question about which disk to use is presented. It would be better if get_auto_disks() in auto-shared.sh would ignore a USB stick with a isohybrid image. One way to detect it would be to see that /cdrom is mounted from that disk. Bug#605122: [Pkg-clamav-devel] Bug#605122: excessive logging of Network is unreachable fills up /var[/log/clamav/freshclam.log]
This one time, at band camp, Enrico Zini said: although I purged freshclam (and clamav) from my system, a /usr/bin/freshclam -d --quiet process was left running, which kept the huge freshclam.log open, which left its disk space in /var/ allocated although I had deleted the file manually. freshclam being purged meant that the stop script in /etc/init.d was not there anymore to be used to shut freshclam down; killing the freshclam process manually obviously put an end to all the sufferings and freed that 1.2Gb I needed in my /var. I personally have no problems dealing with a scenario of disk space is not freed while the file is still open coupled with purging freshclam leaves the daemon running and freshclam keeps its logfile open all the time, but I can see how it all can cause a rather bad friday afternoon to many, especiall because at that point du and friends will not show you where the disk space is used anymore :( du and df disagreeing is almost always a sign of an open but deleted file. lsof is your friend in these cases. It sounds like the main bug is that the init script failed to kill freshclam here. Can you provide any more info or help us to reproduce it? I know that freshclam blocks some of the useful shutdown signals while it's in the chunk of code concerned with downloads (which, without a network, will be more time than normal), but the initscript does try very hard to make sure it's killed off even so.
