Bug#634640: xfce4-power-manager: xfce4-utils recommends xscreensaver which makes it the default

2011-07-20 Thread Daniel Dickinson
Package: xfce4-power-manager
Version: 1.0.10-4
Followup-For: Bug #634640

Thank you for pointing me to xflock4. Unfortunately because xfce4-utils
depends on xscreensaver | xlockmore | xlockmore-gl, the default for the power
manager is to use xscreensaver, unless xlockmore or xlockmore-gl are chosen
(which isn't much better). Either the recommends should include the various
'simple' screen lockers, preferably with higher priority so that the
semi-broken xscreensaver + power manager isn't the default state.

I know people want screensavers, but IMNHO shipping a broken config (which
probably will be the case unless xscreensaver is modified to play nice with
power manager, or xfce4-screensaver or something like gnome-screensaver is
written) is worse than not having pretty graphics that actually do the opposite
of what they're called (screensaver).

If you disagree, that's fine, but please at least add more screen lockers to
the recommends.

Bug#634820: util-linux: ionice -c3 on a kernel build still results in i/o starvation for mplayer

2011-07-20 Thread Arthur Marsh
Package: util-linux
Version: 2.19.1-4
Severity: normal

when running ionice -c3 on a kernel rebuild, an mplayer process accessing the
same disk spindle for a movie file gets its input starved by the kernel build
process having priority for disk writes.

I would like ionice -c3 on a disk i/o intensive process such as a kernel rebuild
to mean that another process run normally (e.g. mplayer) does not get starved
for i/o, even if the ionice'd process has pending disk writes.

Bug#475727: Gmail and chats (was: Re: One way to reproduce this)

2011-07-20 Thread Rogério Brito
Hi.

I am just adding some information, as I was perusing the offlineimap mailing
list and found a reference to this e-mail of mine.

On Sep 09 2010, Rogério Brito wrote:
I think that I found one way to reproduce this in a way that would
 serve for debugging purposes:

With a gmail account, if you are trying to upload to the gmail servers
an e-mail that is a chat of theirs, then they will refuse the upload
(tested also with mutt and icedove). The most informative message of
the programs is displayed by mutt. Icedove informs that the server
didn't like something, and offlineimap just bombs with a stack trace,
instead of having better error handling.

For the record, one of the things that I've seen that sets a gmail chat
apart from others is some kind of marking with the headers:

X-Google-Chat-Start: timestamp
X-Google-Chat-End: timestamp
X-Google-Chat-With: gmail account name

Once I removed those from an offending message, I could reupload the
messages to gmail.

Perhaps for users that know what they are doing we could have a dangerous
option to the repository settings like:

   mangle_my_gmail_chat_logs = I know what I am doing

This is an admitted kludge, but a middle ground workaround for a
non-standard IMAP system that is gmail in the first place...

Bug#634821: libgcc1: filename change breaks old gcc

2011-07-20 Thread Jonathan Nieder
Package: libgcc1
Version: 4.6.0-12
Severity: important
Justification: breaks related software
X-Debbugs-Cc: Andrew Chittenden an...@bluearc.com

Hi,

As Andy noticed[*], moving libgcc_s.so.1 from /lib to /lib/$arch
breaks versions of gcc from before that move.

 $ echo 'int main(void) { return 0; }' | gcc-4.3 -x c -
 /usr/bin/ld: error: cannot open
/usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-linux-gnu/4.3.5/libgcc_s.so: No such file or directory
 /usr/bin/ld: error: cannot open
/usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-linux-gnu/4.3.5/libgcc_s.so: No such file or directory
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

The cause: such gcc versions include a symlink with the path to
libgcc hardcoded.

 $ readlink /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-linux-gnu/4.3.5/libgcc_s.so
 /lib/libgcc_s.so.1

(The same considerations apply to libgomp.so.1, though that might
be less noticeable.)

Questions:

1. Is there any GCC command-line option that people can use to work
around this kind of thing (e.g., to add a directory to the front of
   the search order)?

2. Would it make sense to introduce a new package libgcc1-multiarch
and make libgcc1 into a compatibility package that ships a symlink

/lib/libgcc_s.so.1 - /lib/$arch/libgcc_s.so.1

for the sake of smooth partial upgrades?

3. Any other thoughts?

Thanks and hope that helps,
Jonathan

The patch looks okay, but I'd like to see a full debdiff against the

Bug#634640: xfce4-power-manager: please disregard previous

2011-07-20 Thread Daniel Dickinson
Package: xfce4-power-manager
Version: 1.0.10-4
Followup-For: Bug #634640

Ok, apparently I'm talking in my sleep or something. I discovered that power
manager doesn't lock the screen (except for, if select, after hibernate and
suspend. That means the only alternative to the screensavers is xtralock
combined with a screen locker like i3lock or slock.

For a wishlist item I would suggest that xfce4-power-manager have the ability
to lock the screen when it blanks it, e.g. using i3lock, or xtrlock, or slock,
so that there is an alternative to the screensavers.

Another possibility (depending on dependencies, what's pulled in as a result)
would be to use gnome-screensaver rather than xscreensaver as the default (it
at least doesn't have bogus DPMS).

Hi Racke!

In order to fix this problem, I propose to apply attached patch. I hope
my assumption is correct that only the install target needs the 022
umask - it builds for me, but I did not do a before/after analysis of
the file permissions in the packages built.

Bug#553672: system-tools-backends: diff for NMU version 2.10.1-2.1

Why do you need that special handling in preinst?
This looks ugly (and wrong) to me.

Do you have another suggestions on how to fix the issue for people who
have already upgraded from Lenny to Squeeze?

They will have both /etc/dbus-1/system.d/system-tools-backends.conf and
/etc/dbus-1/system.d/org.freedesktop.SystemToolsBackends.conf on their
system. The former not belonging to any package and not being tracked at
all. But still, its presence will prevent them from using anything from
gnome-system-tools requiring extra privileges.

This fix is mainly targeted at stable.

I am willing to look up any suggestions or cancel the upload if you have
a better idea, but from my tests, writing special handling was the only
way to solve this.

 Hi,

 Simon Josefsson wrote:

Ok, so possibly #630417 does not fix the problem? I'm cc'ing the bug
for further help with debugging. As far as I can tell, the powerpc
buildd is using gcj 4.6.0-13 (i.e., later than 4.6.0-6) and is still
experiencing the problem explained in the #630417 bug report. Complete
 log is available here:

 https://buildd.debian.org/fetch.cgi?pkg=libidnarch=powerpcver=1.22-1stamp=1308562221file=log

I experienced something similar trying to build subversion on an
 amd64 machine:

  $ /usr/lib/jvm/java-gcj/bin/javac -target 1.5 -source 1.5 \
   -d subversion/bindings/javahl/classes \
   -classpath subversion/bindings/javahl/classes:\

cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
   make[1]: ***
 [subversion/bindings/javahl/classes/org/apache/subversion/javahl/ClientException.class]
  Error 127

Upgrading libgcj-bc to 4.6.1-2 fixes it.

(By the way, libgcj-bc's documentation directory is a symlink to
 libgcj-common but the versioned dependency libgcj-bc - libgcj-common
is not very strict, making it hard to dig up a changelog. Would it
be possible to make that dependency use = or to give libgcj-bc its
 own documentation directory?)

Did you see this recently? I just uploaded libidn-1.22-2 which happened
to be built correctly on both sparc and powerpc. So it seems this issue
is gone again? At least on the buildd's.

/Simon

Bug#634795: auto-multiple-choice: FTBFS: /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lcv

2011-07-20 Thread Georges Khaznadar
Dear Nobuhiro Iwamatsu,

I could not create an experimental chroot with pbuilder to test a
complete build of auto-multiple-choice in that environment.

I installed cv2.3, which can be done without uninstalling cv2.1, and
built the patched version of auto-multiple-choice in my current
environment, which is not the same as an experimental chroot. I
uploaded the package to experimental.

If you can share with me a recipe to create an experimental chroot with
pbuilder, please do it. Also, send me a reminder when cv2.3 will enter
unstable, so I can do the same with auto-multiple-choice.

By the way, which is the roadmap for cv2.3? I am developing another
package which depends on it, by python bindings (pymecavideo): are
python bindings already mature for cv2.3?

Best regards, Georges.

Bug#581066: Please don't change User-Agent

Hi,

brian m. carlson wrote:

I expect to see significant breakage if the User-Agent is changed, and
for that reason I would request that you specifically not do it.

If significant meant widespread I would disagree, but significant
means important enough for people to care, and having even a single
important site relying on the names of browsers would meet that
criterion. So I fear I have to agree with you.

Thanks for writing.

We (upstream author and me) create test suite about this library.
 Could you please sponsor them?

Do you mean that you have created it (but I don't find it in the git

sponsor the package in the meantime ?

Thank you,

Ok, apparently I'm talking in my sleep or something. I discovered that power
manager doesn't lock the screen (except for, if select, after hibernate and
suspend. That means the only alternative to the screensavers is xtralock
combined with a screen locker like i3lock or slock.

For a wishlist item I would suggest that xfce4-power-manager have the ability
to lock the screen when it blanks it, e.g. using i3lock, or xtrlock, or
slock, so that there is an alternative to the screensavers.

Another possibility (depending on dependencies, what's pulled in as a result)
would be to use gnome-screensaver rather than xscreensaver as the default (it
at least doesn't have bogus DPMS).

You're mistaken. If you want something that automatically locks the
screen after a while, you want a screensaver (even in blank mode only).

Xfpm just locks the screen at suspend/resume, it's *not* a screensaver.

unconditional break on gcc-4.1 and gcc-4.3 in libgcc1, which should make people

Maybe it would be better to backport the multiarch patches to gcc-4.3; while
removed in unstable now, the GPC frontend was updated to build for 4.3 instead
of 4.1, so a multiarch enabled gcc-4.3 in unstable would make sense.

Bug#632475: btrfs flushing hangs

2011-07-20 Thread Clint Adams
Hi Chris,

When my Sheevaplug's btrfs partition gets near-full (df will report 1.8

and I can no longer read or write.

This occurs with Debian's linux-image-2.6.39-2-kirkwood and
3.0.0~rc5-1~experimental.1 as well. It is consistently reproducible.

Please let me know what additional information would be helpful.

So that mean we can use kfreebsd-i386 kfreebsd-amd64 but not
kfreebsd-any since mipsel won't have it, right?

I suspect the %k in /lib/udev/lmt-udev won't get expanded correctly,

 devices=%k

You might have to pass the value of %k in from 99-laptop-mode.rules instead.

Just out of curiousity, is there any particular reason you abandoned the
earlier approach of just using %@ in /lib/udev/lmt-udev?

Nope. I just must have missed it. Thanks for pointing this.

mkdir /usr/local/lib/gcc/4.3.5

We have some old code that we need to maintain that won't compile with later
 versions of the compiler.

IMO the better approach would be multiarch-compat and multiarch-compat-dev
packages, built from a multiarch-compat source package (I do not want to
maintain these).

the multiarch-compat package would hold the symlinks for the shared libraries,
the multiarch-compat-dev package the *.o symlinks and the asm symlink from
eglibc (currently in gcc-multilib).

with more packages migrating to multiarch locations, you could extend these
packages, or build new binary packages from this source package.

But then, the breaks wouldn't be helpful.

Bug#634475: adduser --system in maintainer scripts (re: Bug #634475)

2011-07-20 Thread Simon McVittie
On Mon, 30 May 2011 at 09:12:59 +0100, Stephen Gran wrote:
This one time, at band camp, Roger Leigh said:
  [...] However, most
postinsts wrap the call to adduser with a check for whether the
  account already exists [...]

I know that people do that, but it is unnecessary scaffolding. adduser
already handles that just fine. Maybe the documentation is lacking, but
the design goal is that you can just call adduser --system --quiet $args
in your postinst, and adduser will do what you meant:

 steve@varinia:~$ getent passwd postfix
 postfix:x:112:120::/var/spool/postfix:/bin/false
steve@varinia:~$ sudo adduser --system --quiet postfix
 [sudo] password for steve:
 steve@varinia:~$ echo $?
 0

We use adduser --system --quiet in the dbus package without checking for
existence of the user first, as recommended here. However, bug #634475
reveals that if the messagebus user is present, but is not in the system UID
range, this will make the upgrade fail.

Peter Chubb (reporter of #634475) wrote:
Simon If you have enough backups of /etc/passwd to be able to answer
Simon these questions: what were the messagebus user's home
Simon directory, numeric UID, and primary group ID before the
Simon upgrade? What was the messagebus group's numeric GID? Did you
Simon have any other users or groups whose numeric UID/GID collided
 Simon with messagebus?

In the backup from two days ago:

: wombat ; grep messagebus passwd group
 passwd:messagebus:x:110:107::/var/run/dbus:/bin/false
 group:messagebus:x:107:
  wombat ; grep 110 passwd
 messagebus:x:110:107::/var/run/dbus:/bin/false
 : wombat ; grep 107 group
 messagebus:x:107:

I think the issue I have is that because of legacy accounts,
LAST_SYSTEM_UID is 99 in /etc/adduser.conf, and for some reason the
account was already existing with a higher UID than that.

Presumably, on Peter's system, messagebus was either created while
LAST_SYSTEM_UID was higher, or possibly before 2003 when dbus created
messagebus as a non-system group (#222563 - which was undeniably itself a bug,
but we should do what we can to recover from historical bugs).

In the opinions of the adduser maintainers, what should daemon-user-creating
packages like dbus be doing about this?

Thanks,
S

Sorry, but I don't understand you here. If you look at [1], you'll see
 that I've been using DEB_DH_STRIP_ARGS.
Or are you saying that only DEB_DH_STRIP_ARGS_package is not meant
to be overridden? But this is what this bug report is about.

I want a single debug package, but exclude certain binary packages
 from it.

Indeed you are using the proper variable (so ignore my first paragraph).

 You tried this:

   DEB_DH_STRIP_ARGS_$(UDEB_PKG) = --dbg-package=

 Try this instead:

   DEB_DH_STRIP_ARGS_$(UDEB_PKG) =

I tried that, it doesn't work unfortunately. If the
DEB_DH_STRIP_ARGS_package variable is empty, cdbs will use the
 default value.

Ah, _that_ is a bug in CDBS :-)

Ok, let's reassign this to cdbs then. If DEB_DH_STRIP_ARGS_package =
is supposed to do what I want, then this would work for me.

Cheers,
Michael

If I visit http://www.loadtrail.com/ with mozilla-plugin-gnash enabled

Please move /usr/lib/nvidia/diversions/libglx.so out of the way or

After your installation finished you should reinstall xserver-xorg-core

As I don't know your installation/update history, I can't reproduce how

The diversion handling in testing/unstable is now done very differently

This does have the effect of defining stat and lstat when __WIN32__ is

Hello,

I started getting these http failures (signal 10) as well a couple of

Bug#634842: pulseaudio: Logitech C250 Webcam microphone works with wrong sample rate

2011-07-20 Thread Dmitry A. Istselemov
Package: pulseaudio
Severity: normal

Logitech C250 Webcam microphone works with wrong sample rate in pulseaudio. All
records making with this microphone sounds very fast. Pulseaudio recognize this
mic as one having 48000Hz sample rate. In fact I beleive it should be 16000Hz.
The webcam is connected using USB interface. At first it appeard in Skype (and
in Skype it doesn't work even now neither with nor without pulse). The
workaround for this was making an asound.conf with the next lines:

pcm.skype {
type plug
slave {
pcm hw:1,0
rate 16000
}
}
removing pulseaudio and using this plug device as an input device for skype.

But checking the microphone by executing arecord -D plughw:1,0 -vv
RecTest.wav and then playing the record shew that it worked fine. The sound
was good and everything was fine with the speech speed. Actually I can't
understand why the mic doesn't work in skype but works great in all the other
programs (I used audacity and the above arecord line for testing) when I'm
using alsa only? And why it makes just noise (speech with very fast speed)
everywhere when I'm using pulse? This problem also exist when I use native
2.6.39 debian kernel.

Since nobody volunteered I just disabled it the last time it broke
and subsequently removed the worker installation that was in my alioth

It's much less useful than it was at the start and it's relatively easy
to recreate a symbols file by scanning successively stable + testing +
unstable versions of the library.

There are several problems, the most glaring of which the attached patch
 fixes.
 I'll break down the changes:

 1. Return -TARGET_ENOSYS instead of -ENOSYS from linux-user/main.c
* Caused the strange 'Level 2 synchronization messages' instead of
 correctly
 reporting the syscall was missing.
* Made glibc simply fail instead of using older syscalls (one important
example is the new setrlimit syscall which qemu lacks and gnupg/apt needs)

 2. The mips syscall table wasn't kept in-sync with syscall.c
* utimensat was missing (and the cause of the ENOSYS error Lisandro was
 seeing)
* Although I didn't run into problems with any other syscalls, I updated
 the
table to match syscall.c as well I could anyway

 3. Dereferencing a null pointer causes an exception 0xC (EXCP_AdEL) instead of
EXCP_TLBL. This should also trigger a segfault.

 4. The codes for get/setrlimit do not stay constant between linux target
platforms. I added a conversion method. This is important else programs
(rsyslog, python, ...) can go into a near infinite loop trying to close all
 the
file descriptors from 0 to -1.

 5. 64-bit file system calls were failing on mipsel (ftruncate 888 created
 files
888*4GB large). arm had already work-around code for EABI which also worked
 for
mipsel, so I just added the same code path for mips everywhere arm eabi has
 it.
Works for both little and big endian.

committed your patch to git, and will upload soon.

live well,
  vagrant

There's an embedded code copy of GLEW/libglew within scorched3d we need
to get rid of. ATM the package installs a lintian override as a

  Description : keyboard-accessible user interfaces for XUL-based
applications

The Dactyl project offers Vim-inspired, keyboard-accessible user
interfaces for Iceweasel/Firefox (Pentadactyl), Icedove/Thunderbird
(Teledactyl), and Songbird (Melodactyl). It allows to navigate these
applications with sensible key bindings instead of the mouse.

Initially, only a xul-ext-pentadactyl binary will be provided, since the
other two extensions are still in a pre-alpha stage.

This is a fork of the Vimperator extension (which is already in Debian),
but as Vimperator is moving on [1] and Pentadactyl appears to retain its
“classic” appearance and behavior, it makes sense to offer this choice.

Bug#444874: network-manager-openvpn: default gateway changed to tun0 without request

2011-07-20 Thread Wolfgang Schulze-Zachau

Package: network-manager-openvpn
Version: 0.8.1-1
Severity: normal

This very same issue still exists in the current version of this package in
squeeze.
When the openvpn connection is started via a shell script, all routing is
applied as it
should be, and the default gateway remains unchanged.
When the same connection is started via network-manager, the default gateway is
changed
by nm, and that is ***BAD***, since it breaks the user's access to the Internet.
This renders the openvpn plugin effectively useless, as no combination of
options
changes this behaviour.

For now I will revert back to using shell scripts.
Since this bug has not seen any updates or even acknowledgement from the
package
maintainers, I wonder whether this will get any attention at all?

Bug#634850: [patch] provide the multiarch libdir for the non-default multilibs

2011-07-20 Thread Matthias Klose
Package: eglibc
Version: 2.13-10
Severity: normal
Tags: patch
User: ubuntu-de...@lists.ubuntu.com
Usertags: origin-ubuntu oneiric ubuntu-patch

this is for a pending change for the multiarch updates in GCC. On multilib
enabled archs the include and library directories are looked up using a prefix
and a relative path. With the pending upload, lookups will fail for the
non-default multilibs, e.g. on amd64 /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/../../lib32 doesn't
work as long as the /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu directory is non-existant (needed to
access the crti.o et al. files). the eglibc biarch -dev packages should ship
this empty directory. The attached patch needs updating for mips, mipsel and
kfreebsd-amd64.

  * Add an empty directory /usr/lib/multiarch in the biarch -dev packages,
needed by GCC to resolve names relative to this path.

Bug#620649: depends on nonexisting zeitgeist-datahub

2011-07-20 Thread Alexander Kurtz
fixed 620649 0.8.1-1
thanks

Hi,

it seems the BTS can't handle a bug being closed in another package. [1]
This bug therefore still prevents migration to testing. [2][3]

Since zeitgeist-datahub is now available in unstable[4], I'm marking
this as fixed in the latest version of zeitgeist.

Best regards

Alexander Kurtz

Hello,

Please package ditaa-addons from http://ditaa-addons.sourceforge.net/
It includes an important utility, Ditaa Eps, which enables EPS output
which is makes it possible to scale diagrams arbitrarily.

Thanks.

Bug#634848: debian.changelog: add method that gives list of closed bugs

It would be nice if it was possible to get a list of bugs closed in a

FWIW bzr-builddeb has some code for this that I've been meaning to
upstream into python-debian.

Cheers,

Jelmer
