Bug#645540: Essential package conflict between sysvinit and systemd-sysv
]] James | Package: sysvinit | Version: 2.88dsf-13.12 | | I'd recommend just booting with init=/bin/systemd, tbh. It's what I (as | the systemd maintainer) do on my own systems. | | Well, that seems ironic, in that I would have expected the sytemd maintainer | himself to have some keener interest in finally resolving this packaging | problem. I do have an interest in it, but removing Essential: yes from sysvinit is not the first step in getting systemd better integrated in Debian. You're of course free to think I should have a keener interest in getting systemd-sysv be more useful, but I don't and the tone of your mail does in no way make me more interested. Given it's the only feedback I've had about systemd-sysv, I'd be more inclined to just drop the package than spend effort arguing about my priorities and being accused of throwing road-blocks and dragging my feet. | Here are the files that _do_not_ get installed when systemd-sysv is _not_ | installed: | | /sbin/halt | /sbin/init | /sbin/poweroff | /sbin/reboot | /sbin/runlevel | /sbin/shutdown | /sbin/telinit | /usr/share/doc/systemd-sysv/changelog.Debian.gz | /usr/share/doc/systemd-sysv/copyright | /usr/share/man/man1/init.1.gz | /usr/share/man/man8/halt.8.gz | /usr/share/man/man8/poweroff.8.gz | /usr/share/man/man8/reboot.8.gz | /usr/share/man/man8/runlevel.8.gz | /usr/share/man/man8/shutdown.8.gz | /usr/share/man/man8/telinit.8.gz | | So then, you are saying that all those links back to /bin/systemctl are not | important, or even, just a mistake? No, I'm in no way saying they're a mistake and I see nothing in what I write arguing for that. Please don't construct strawmen or put words in my mouth. | And the man pages - nothing useful? We do not need systemd-sysv? | Then, why does it exist? I think this line of reasoning is foolish - | or absurd. No, I'm saying you can work fine without it. It exists so people can experiment with it but it has some fairly serious problems associated issued with it, like the conflict with an essential package. | systemd-sysvinit can't be essential since that'd force it onto all | systems. | | I don't claim to be a Debian packaging expert. I've only looked | through the documentation. Fine - don't make systemd-sysv an | Essential package, just make it Provides: init, Conflicts: init, and | Replaces: init, or some such. That could work, if some other package then has a Depends on init. Such a package would be base-files, for instance. This would require a bit of coordination with base-files. | Either way, I do not accept any insinuation that the Debian packaging | system is somehow broken and not able to handle multiple init | packages. That is also an absurd line of reasoning. Again, please don't construct strawmen. Nobody has said that the Debian packaging system is broken or unable to handle multiple init systems. I've explained why your suggested solution (adding Essential: yes) would not work. | There will have to be some changes in the package configuration of both | sysvinit and systemd-sysv - sooner or later. Please offer some useful | solutions, rather than foot-dragging and throwing road-blocks. I think it would be a useful first step to stop accusing people of foot-dragging and throwing road-blocks. Bug#646206: kmymoney: Decimal separator no longer respected when importing from CSV
Package: kmymoney Version: 4.6.0-2-1 Severity: important The CSV importer no longer respects the decimal separator setting in any way, all data is always imported incorrectly (as if the decimal separator didn't exist at all, so amount x 100 usually). This worked on 15.10.2011, but doesn't today. Kmymoney has not been upgraded during that time but some parts of the KDE runtime have (I follow unstable very closely on this machine), the bug was probably introduced somewhere over there. Bug#619846: RFA: sam2p -- convert raster images to EPS, PDF, and other formats
Hi Tanguy, sorry for not responding so long. On Wednesday 15 June 2011, Tanguy Ortolo wrote: Upstream has been mostly inactive for some time. Did it? I see that a project has been started in Google code to take over its maintenance: was that your initiative or is their a real new upstream? There have been two new upstream releases since then. It seems the author has found more time for sam2p again. I had nothing to do with it. sam2p has a tendency to FTBFS with most major new gcc releases. Therefore, the new maintainer should have some C++ knowledge and the ability/willingness to dig into some hand-crafted build system. Unfortunately this is not really in my skills. Ideally this should be upstream's job so I think what is mostly needed is a new upstream… If someone can be found to handle the coding work, I would be glad to do adopt the package. If you are still interested, I think it would be great if you would co-maintain the package. You could do the normal maintenance and I could help you with coding (if upstream does not handle it). Bug#643957: [BTS#643957] templates://live-build/{live-build-cron.templates} : Final update for English review
Dear Debian maintainer, On Saturday, October 01, 2011, I notified you of the beginning of a review process concerning debconf templates for live-build. The debian-l10n-english contributors have now reviewed these templates, and the final proposed changes are attached to this update to the original bug report. Please review the suggested changes, and if you have any objections, let me know in the next 3 days. However, please try to avoid uploading live-build with these changes right now. The second phase of this process will begin on Tuesday, October 25, 2011, when I will coordinate updates to translations of debconf templates. The existing translators will be notified of the changes: they will receive an updated PO file for their language. Simultaneously, a general call for new translations will be sent to the debian-i18n mailing list. Both these calls for translations will request updates to be sent as individual bug reports. That will probably trigger a lot of bug reports against your package, but these should be easier to deal with. The call for translation updates and new translations will run until about Tuesday, November 15, 2011. Please avoid uploading a package with fixed or changed debconf templates and/or translation updates in the meantime. Of course, other changes are safe. Please note that this is an approximative delay, which depends on my own availability to process this work and is influenced by the fact that I simultaneously work on many packages. Around Wednesday, November 16, 2011, I will contact you again and will send a final patch summarizing all the updates (changes to debconf templates, updates to debconf translations and new debconf translations). Again, thanks for your attention and cooperation. -- # These templates have been reviewed by the debian-l10n-english # team # # If modifications/additions/rewording are needed, please ask # debian-l10n-engl...@lists.debian.org for advice. # # Even minor modifications require translation updates and such # changes should be coordinated with translators and reviewers. Bug#646208: RFH: apache2 -- Apache HTTP Server
Package: wnpp Severity: normal Hi, I am looking for co-maintainers for the apache2 package. The other co-maintainers are inactive. The package is not in a bad shape, but I am lacking time and there is significant work to be done in the near future. The new co-maintainer(s) should of course have significant experience as apache user and some skills in Debian packaging. Depending on their level of experience, the following tasks need to be done: * Respond to new bug reports and check if there is actually a bug or if it is just a configuration error. * Investigate and fix bugs. * Follow up on bugs marked moreinfo and maybe close them. * A new major upstream release (2.4) is expected soon. Upgrading the package to 2.4 will require lots of packaging work like designing an upgrade path (the apache2-mpm* packages will likely go away), extending the maintainer scripts to handle the upgrade, writing documentation, adapting the default configuration, communicating with the maintainers of module packages, and testing the upgrade process and the new packages. * The major upgrade will allow to do some changes which have been deferred for compatibility (like improving the conf.d mechanism). * There are also a number of features that would be nice to have but have so far not been implemented due to lack of time. For example, there should be some way for the admin to configure if apache2 should be restarted when module packages are installed/upgraded/removed. * Help with maintaining apr/apr-util/ssl-cert is also appreciated, but these are a lot less work. Maintaining apache2 in Debian is a great way to learn more about Apache HTTPD. This includes its advanced and/or less frequently used features and its inner workings. But maintaining apache2 also means putting emphasis on reliability and not breaking people's setups. As I am not really involved in Ubuntu, people who are knowledgable about Ubuntu's needs and development process are especially welcome. Bug#646209: libhtml-mason-perl-examples: installs files to /var/www (in postinst)
Package: libhtml-mason-perl-examples Version: 1:1.46-1 Severity: important libhtml-mason-perl-examples by default installs files to /var/www (in postinst). This should not be done, see the description for the dir-or-file-in-var-www lintian tag below: Debian packages should not install files under /var/www. This is not one of the /var directories in the File Hierarchy Standard and is under the control of the local administrator. Packages should not assume that it is the document root for a web server; it is very common for users to change the default document root and packages should not assume that users will keep any particular setting. Packages that want to make files available via an installed web server should instead put instructions for the local administrator in a README.Debian file and ideally include configuration fragments for common web servers such as Apache. As an exception, packages are permitted to create the /var/www directory due to its past history as the default document root, but should at most copy over a default file in postinst for a new install. In this case, please add a Lintian override. Refer to Filesystem Hierarchy Standard (The /var Hierarchy) for details. Severity: serious, Certainty: possible We might also want to merge the *-examples with the *-doc package. Bug#646199: libstfl-dev: Needs to depend on libstfl0
Hi, * Sven Joachim svenj...@gmx.de [2011-10-22 08:29]: The libstfl-dev package needs to depend on libstfl0 (= ${binary:Version}) for the /usr/lib/libstfl.so - libstfl.so.0 symlink. I suppose this missing dependency is the reason why libstfl0 does not have _any_ reverse dependencies, since it's only possible to link statically against stfl unless you build-depend on libstfl0. Oh, thanks for noticing. I have no idea why this dependency is not there and given that stfl would probably never go through NEW like that I would expect that this has gone missing at a later point. Will be fixed soon. Thanks! The thing is that you can't tell if the patch does break anything from testing with Debian live only. Debian live uses simple networking configuration in which the patch works. However, in more complex cases downing the interface might be a replacement for proper cleanup which the script never had to do due to the fact downing an interface removes pretty much everything related to it. Bug#646208: RFH: apache2 -- Apache HTTP Server
Hi Arno, hi Sandro, it would be great to have you on board. If you haven't done so yet, subscribe to debian-apache@l.d.o and just chime into bug reports. If you have any patches, attach them to the bugs or send them to the list. I will add you to svn after a few contributions. Theses pages may have information useful for you: http://wiki.debian.org/Teams/Apache/SVN http://wiki.debian.org/Teams/Apache http://wiki.debian.org/Apache2SqueezeGoals (obviously outdated) There is also a link to a commit mailing list in one of the pages. There are a few more todos which just came to my mind: - Use dpkg-buildflags in apache2, apr, apr-util - Support multiarch in apr, apr-util As I am not really involved in Ubuntu, people who are knowledgable about Ubuntu's needs and development process are especially welcome. As same as Arno, I'm not exactly the right person for this :) No problem. I have forwarded the RFH to the ubuntu server team list. Maybe someone from there will answer. Bug#646228: gsoapssl++ not linked to libssl.
Package: gsoap Version: 2.8.3-2 Severity: serious Hi, It seems that /usr/lib/libgsoapssl++.so isn't linked to libssl, but is using symbols from it. This will cause undefined symbols when trying to link to it. This can of course be fixed in the application by linking to -lssl, but this shouldn't be needed. Looking at the build log, it also always adds -lssl -lcrypto -lz each time it's linking to that library, which shouldn't be needed for linking to the shared library. After the laptop had gone succesfully in suspend mode, i pressed the power on button to resume it and all the status LEDs came back. But pressing the capslock button indicates the system is somehow frozen because the LED is not changing accordingly. I have attached my pm-suspend.log from /var/log/pm-suspend.log. [...] Does wake-on-LAN work if you suspend/hibernate the system? Ben. Hi Ben, I didn't use hibernate on this system before, so I cannot say whether it worked there with lenny. But I just tried to hibernate (to disk) in squeeze (kernel 2.6.32-5-686 with command hibernate) and hibernate/resume worked correctly, but wake-on-LAN does not work (like in power-off case). The LEDs at the ethernet-connector are off and the system does not start on a magic packet. Then I checked hibernate-ram (to ram) with the same configuration. There I had a little problem that the video-output (just console, no X installed on system) was not active after resume (which might be corrected by some specific resume-hooks), but the rest of the system was operational. In addition wake-on-LAN worked, the LEDs were active and I could resume the system from suspend to ram with the magic packet. So the problem occurs only when the system is powered off completely. Bug#646238: indicator-status-provider-telepathy: please don't try to support Telepathy without MC 5
Package: indicator-status-provider-telepathy Version: 0.5.0-1 Severity: normal If its description is accurate, the indicator-status-provider-telepathy binary package shouldn't exist in Debian (and shouldn't have existed in Ubuntu either for at least a couple of years) - all it's likely to do is to confuse people who should be using the -mc5 binary package instead. High-quality Telepathy desktop integration relies on the Account Manager and Channel Dispatcher, of which telepathy-mission-control-5 is the reference implementation (and to be honest, the only implementation there's ever likely to be). If you try to have Telepathy desktop integration without using MC, it'll probably just break things. (Telepathy integration in Empathy and GNOME-Shell relies on MC, and the Empathy and Shell developers have been working with Telepathy upstream to make this possible.) If it was up to me, indicator-status-provider-mc5 would have telepathy in its name instead of mc5 - the fact that it uses Mission Control 5 is an implementation detail - but you'd probably have to coordinate that with Ubuntu. Bug#645540: Essential package conflict between sysvinit and systemd-sysv
systemd-sysvinit can't be essential since that'd force it onto all systems. I suppose, then, that implies that a virtual package - init, for instance - would have to be marked Essential, and that both sysvinit and systemd-sysv would have to _not_ be marked as Essential. More generally, there are several component packages that compose a working systemd itself, and these components will not create a working init unless installed as a group. So then, there will also have to be some systemd virtual package that brings together these components, and it will be this systemd virtual package that is marked Provides: init, Conflicts: init, and Replaces: init, and not systemd-sysv itself. The virtual package systemd, it seems, would include: some renamed systemd-base, which was the previous systemd package libpam-systemd libsystemd-daemon0 libsystemd-login0 systemd-sysv Of course, some of the other packages, systemd-gui for instance, would be referenced by Recommends: systemd-gui within the new systemd virtual package. Bug#646241: scim-gtk2-immodule: SCIM should support gtk3 now
Package: scim-gtk2-immodule Version: 1.4.9-7 Severity: important scim should support gtk3 immodule. Otherwise, it can be used only via xim. (QT4 support is missing too.) Are you going to do this? If not, I need to change im-config package to use updated configuration default to keep scim useful. Let me know maintainer's thought on this. Oh, I am using ibus only these days. Please drop me from maintainer with next upload. If no one respond to this, I will ask removal of this package. This is because, if no one is paying attention for this package, this package is likely to become a source of security risk. As long as I get response to this bug report, I will not do this removal request. (I am not requesting gtk3 immodule package to keep this package alive.) Package: reportbug Version: 6.2.2 Severity: normal Dear Maintainer, I use reportbug quite a bit. This has started happening after the GNOME 3 transition and perhaps reportbug updates as well.
