Bug#644138: kcc: How about removing this package

I found a workaround:
grzes:/home/ga# killall pulseaudio
grzes:/home/ga# ps -A | grep pulse

then I have only one pulseaudio and everything works fine! Why did it
end up in this wrong state in the first place?

Bug#658665: [Pkg-clamav-devel] Bug#658665: clamav-daemon: assumes clamav uid and gid are the same

Well I changed the gid to the same to solve the problem. So currently

  $ getent passwd clamav
  clamav:x:112:112::/var:/bin/false

The system is using etckeeper and I checked the commit logs and the passwd
entry at the time of the problem was

  clamav:x:108:108::/var:/bin/false

meaning the default group for the clamav user was postdrop rather than
clamav and would explain the problem I saw.

I was able to look at etckeeper history and determine that the bad clamav
passwd entry was inserted by hand when migrating from another system (where
it was presumably correct).

So sorry for the false alarm, the clamav package isn't responsible and this
bug can be closed.

Thanks,

Bug#662113: FTBFS: missing build-dep on python-xcbgen

2012-03-03 Thread Isaac Dunham
Package: libxcb
Version: 1.8-2
Severity: serious
Justification: fails to build from source

I'm backporting libxcb-1.8 to Squeeze (because Mesa git head now needs
it), and built xcb-proto 1.7 for this purpose.
When the xcb-proto deb was installed, one of the python scripts crashed.
The error seemed to be due to a version mismatch (per Google), so I
installed the new python-xcbgen and the build got to dh_install
(which is purely a matter of multiarch).

Please either add a Build-depends: python-xcbgen (>=1.7) to libxcb or
(if appropriate) a Breaks: python-xcbgen (<<1.7) to xcb-proto.

That's correct.

Pacakges will now only need to depend on the lib package, and dh_shlibs should
detect this automatically.

These messages are due to the current inability to conditionally load
libraries only when they are installed and not when they have been
previously installed and now purged.

> cleanups to configuration files.

The problem occurs when they are installed and then removed but not
purged. Removed packages have their configuration files left behind
as is expected. But these configuration files say to load shared
libraries that have been removed. That creates the bug.

This has been reported a number of times already but there is not an
easy fix available and so the bug remains. I am merging it with the
previous bugs reported on this problem.

In the meantime you can fix the problem through one of two actions.

Either:
1) install the package again (undoing the remove) which will bring the
.so library files back onto the system again and silence the error or
2) purge the package which will remove the configuration file too and
remove the directive that is trying to load the non-existest .so
   library file.

In other words either
1) apt-get install php5-gd php5-mcrypt php5-suhosin
or
2) apt-get purge php5-gd php5-mcrypt php5-suhosin

Either of those actions should stop the above errors as a workaround
for this bug.

Yes, that's still generally true. Heck, even when Windows doesn't
handle a given DSDT well, if it's common hardware then getting
machines to work "out of the box" with Linux would tend to be
considered valuable.

Does this still happen if you use a kernel without pae support, by the
way? Context: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=772730

Bug#660195: Passing variables down to recursive Makefile.PL invocations

2012-03-03 Thread Niko Tyni
Hi makemaker people,

as discussed five years ago in [rt.cpan.org #28632], when building a
distribution with separate Makefile.PL files in subdirectories,
command line arguments to Makefile.PL are not passed through
to recursive invocations. This seems to be the case for the
current versions too, up to and including v6.63_02-9-g5072697 in
.

I'm bringing this up here on the makemaker list as Michael Schwern
suggested so in the ticket.

To summarize, the top level invocation
 perl Makefile.PL LD=foo
will only affect the LD setting in the generated top-level Makefile but
not in the subdirectory Makefile, which is generated from the subdirectory
Makefile.PL.

We're facing this in Debian because we need a way to set security related
linker flags (-Wl,-z,relro to be precise) for the build, and the flags are
not propagated to subdirectories in distributions like Imager (on CPAN.)
That's http://bugs.debian.org/660195 (cc'd) FWIW.

I've looked into this (for the MM_Unix part), and I see two whitelists
of variables that do affect the recursively generated Makefiles or
the respective 'make' invocations. Any others seem to get ignored
in subdirectories.

- ExtUtils::MakeMaker::new() lists POLLUTE PERL_CORE LINKTYPE. POLLUTE
has special handling, but the others get set in the 'MakeMaker
constants' section of the generated subdirectory Makefile.
- ExtUtils::MM_Unix::passthru() lists LIB LIBPERL_A LINKTYPE OPTIMIZE
PREFIX INSTALL_BASE. Those get added to the recursive make
invocation command line in the top level Makefile (via the 'Makemaker
subdirs' section and the PASTHRU variable.)

For the time being, I've patched the latter list for Debian to include
LD, but I was wondering how much of this is working as designed.
Why aren't all command line settings propagated?

There's a test case in the CPAN ticket so I'll spare the details,
but let me know if you need any.

Many thanks for your work on MakeMaker,

There are so many encoding convertes. This one seems to be outdated and
not so popular and not maintained. (It used to be popular as I remember
but that may be as old as in 1998 when nkf was in non-free ...)

Reality checks:

I locally have 2 of them:
libc-bin: /usr/bin/iconv (The most basic one without huristics)
nkf: /usr/bin/nkf(The best huristic Japanese optimized one)

As I quickly checked for japanese optimized ones, I found 3:
nkf popcon = about 2000 last upload [2011-05-31] active
kcc popcon < 200 last upload [2004-11-29] no change from oldstable
ack popcon < 100 last upload [2008-07-24] no change from oldstable
http://qa.debian.org/popcon-graph.php?packages=kcc+ack+nkf&show_installed=on&want_legend=on&want_ticks=on&beenhere=1

nkf: UTF-8 supported (in Description)
kcc ack: UTF-8 not supported (in Description)

Both kcc and ack maintainers are not active these dya as I vaguely
recall. (CCed)

I've passed this information upstream. Hopefully it can be fixed in a
2.6.32.y release soon so everyone benefits.

If you are interested in pursuing a fix for either of these, please
feel free to file it as a separate bug. Results from testing a few
versions halfway between from could be
helpful in narrowing the search for the fix.

Many thanks,

Thanks. Does the output switching work correctly if you enable the
"auto-mute mode" control from alsamixer? (Be sure to hit F6 first to
make sure you are controlling ALSA and not pulseaudio. The keybinding
to toggle a control seems to be 'M'.)

Curious,
Jonathan

I've been thinking about the problem of memory consumption too. But I've
come to a different solution. One that doesn't need memory at all.

Instead of remembering inodes, filenames and checksums create a global
cache (e.g. directory hierachy like .cache//)
and hardlink every file to there. If you want/need to include uid, gid,
mtime, mode in there then make that part of the .cache path.

Garbage collection in the cache would be removing all files with a link
count of 1.

Going one step further link files with unique size [uid, gid, mtime,
...] to .cache/ and change that into .cache/// when you find a second file with the same size that isn't
identical. That would save on the expensive hashing of clearly unique
files.

You could also use a hash that computes the first byte from the first
4k, second byte from 64k, thrid from 1mb and so on. That way you can
check if the beginning of 2 files match without having to checksum the
whole file or literally comprare the two.

Goswin

Severity: normal

Hi,

jhead is removing a lot of valuable data with

jhead -cmd 'jpegtran -progressive &i > &o' P1080931.JPG,
like the most important Date/Time Original exif tag.

jhead -cmd is supposed to keep that exif tags.

I now use :

phototemp=$(mktemp $photo.)
jpegtran -copy all -progressive $photo > $phototemp && mv -f  $phototemp
$photo

thanks

The package description is:
Kismet is an 802.11 layer2 wireless network detector, sniffer, and
intrusion detection system. It will work with any wireless card
that supports raw monitoring (rfmon) mode and can sniff 802.11b,
 802.11a, and 802.11g traffic.
 .
It can use festival to play audio alarms for network events,
can speak out network summary on discovery, and optionally works with
 gpsd to map scanning.

Sorry, I thought it was an appropriate severity level. The bug causes
data loss, and I think a package with a bug like this is unsuitable for
stable release (so it should be important that it is noticed and fixed
before wheezy goes stable). I used this guide:

Dear Maintainer,

After recent upgrade of packages sound stopped working. Sound control in KDE
and Phonon configuration in the settings dialog only show Dummy as the active
output device. My real device "Internal Audio Analog Stereo" (internal
soundcard in my Intel chipset) is greyed out.

This occurs on both my laptop and desktop (both Intel, but different chipsets
otherwise). I tried booting into an old kernel, but it hasn't changed anything.
I haven't seen anything suspicious in the log files (but I don't know what I am
looking for).

Bug#662100: p11-kit: CPPFLAGS hardening flags missing

Package: p11-kit
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

The CPPFLAGS hardening flags are not used in the build.

The problem is "export CPPFLAGS" in debian/rules. I'm not
entirely sure why it causes the problem, but I guess the export
happens while parsing the Makefile - which overwrites the
hardening flags which get added later. The following patch fixes
that:

There are also a lot of network interfaces that don't have MDIO-managed
PHYs, and then there are 10G PHYs with a different register set (see
IEEE 802.3 clause 45). This is why Linux provides the ethtool API to
get PHY state with a little more abstraction.

I suggest that you refer to ethtool as the preferred tool for modern
network drivers, but leave mii-diag around for old drivers that don't
support the ethtool API. I don't see any need to remove it as it should
still work for that old hardware.

Ben.

Bug#584108: libopenusb: should this package be removed?

2012-03-03 Thread Michael Biebl
Hi Simon,

as mentioned in #613182, hal is dead upstream and I checked the latest
libopenusb upstream version (1.1.7) which still uses libhal.
Also, seeing that nobody stepped up taking over maintenance of this
package and it has no reverse dependencies, so I'm wondering if the best
action forward is to just remove it from the archive.

What do you think?

Bug#662099: Blinking text cursor sometimes disappear

2012-03-03 Thread Patrik Olsson
Package: gedit
Version: 3.2.6-1
Severity: important

Sometimes the blinking text cursor disappears visually, although it's
still technically there (text is still entered at the invisible cursor).
I have found a way to bring it back: go to an empty workspace and then
go back to the workspace with the document. The cursor never disappears
while I'm looking at the document. It's usually that I have been at
another workspace, and when I go back to the workspace with the
document, the cursor has disappeared.

I use Xmonad. Not sure if it could have something to do with it (it's
the window manager that handles workspaces, after all). I have not used
Metacity/Mutter/Shell much, so I cannot tell if it happens with those
too. But I'll experiment as soon as I get time. Sadly it doesn't happen
often enough so that I can just start a Shell-session and try for a few
minutes. I would probably have to force myself to work in a
Shell-session for a day or two, but that would be so inconvenient.

I have been attempting to update dopewars to a simplified debhelper v9
rules file and dh-autoreconf instead of the previous maintainer updated
autotools build files.

Using autoreconf I've run into a few issues and the latest has had me
take a break from looking at dopewars for the weekend. I will push my
current local dopewars branch this week and see if I can get some
advice for a fix from debian-mentors.

Thanks,

Bug#662098: Removing line with Ctrl+D sometimes is not undoable

2012-03-03 Thread Patrik Olsson
Package: gedit
Version: 3.2.6-1
Severity: grave

Sometimes I accidentally press Ctrl+D (which removes the current line)
when I meant Ctrl+S (save document). This used to be fine before (in the
amazing 2.x versions), because I could simply hit Ctrl+Z (to undo) and
then Ctrl+S to save the document as I intended it. In this version
however, sometimes the line is not restored with the undo command. If
I'm lucky, I pressed Ctrl+S just before I accidentally pressed Ctrl+D
and I can undo by re-loading (File -> Revert) the document.

Usually more text is removed after undoing a Ctrl+D command, and some
text end up selected.

It doesn't happen always though. I suspect that it has to do with the
undo history filling up and once that happens undoing Ctrl+D doesn't
work correctly anymore. Undoing it will then present the document as it
was much further back in the undo history (at least that's what I think
it is). I'm also pretty sure that redoing doesn't bring back what I had
before an incorrect undo happens. So I cannot undo a faulty undo. On the
other hand, to be fair, I lose faith in the undo system when this
happens so since I save so often I'll rather just reload the whole
document to be sure nothing has been accidentally removed or readded.

I'll try to be more observant next time it happens so that I can give
more information. Please tell me if you want me to test or look into
something.

Thanks

~ Patrik

And maybe also the relevant config snippets, which should be all LocalSocket.*

Perfect, thank you.
I have already merged the translations for the new upstream release 4.1.99+rc0.
However I am experiencing a crash on startup that I am investigating
and is delaying the upload.

Thanks,

Bug#651506: gnome-shell: screen becomes glitched when attempting to unlock

2012-03-03 Thread Stefan Monnier
Package: gnome-shell
Followup-For: Bug #651506

Dear Maintainer,

I believe I'm seeing the same bug. In my case, here is what happens:
- I see this when coming back to the machine after a while.
- I'm not sure if it's always the case, but at least in most cases,
the machine has gone to sleep, so before displaying the lock screen,
  it had to resume.
- there are always several people logged in at the same time via
gdmflexiserver (at least one other, using XFCE).
- when waking up, the lock screen is basically not drawn at all: the screen
stays black, with some console/kernel messages about the
suspend&resume process displayed in the upper left corner. E.g.:

[84202.529410] xhci_hcd :06:00.0: ERROR no room on ep ring
[84202.529421] hub 5-1:1.0: activate --> -12
[84203.782129] xhci_hcd :06:00.0: PCI post-resume error -110!
[84203.782132] xhci_hcd :06:00.0: HC died, cleaning up
[84203.782139] xhci_hcd :06:00.0: HC died, cleaning up
[84203.782150] pm_op(): pci_pc_resume+0x0/0x94 returns -110
[84203.782155] PM: Device :06:00.0 failed to resume async: error -110

[This was carefully copied by hand, but it may contain typos. ]
If I move the mouse, the arrow cursor moves around just fine, tho
slowly/choppily, and sometimes some 32x32 square of the image is "drawn"
but not properly (i.e. it's not black, but it isn't a proper part of the
normal display either). When the mouse is over what would be the gdm3
login box, the arrow cursor changes from an all-white arrow to a black
  arrow with white outline.

- If I type the password blindly, something happens (not quite sure what:
the screen doesn't change, but the arrow-cursor-changes are gone/different.
I.e. maybe I was properly logged in, but it's not like I could tell).

- Sometimes, if I wait a while and come back to the computer, the lock screen
  is back to normal.

Bug#660111: [alsa-devel] multiple, non-physically accesible, HDMI devices listed for Intel IbexPeak ALC269VB

2012-03-03 Thread David Henningsson

On 03/04/2012 12:36 AM, Andres Cimmarusti wrote:

There is active work going on in this area. In fact, I just posted a patch
to the PA mailinglist [1]. And yes, we already have it in Ubuntu 11.10 (to
probe multiple hdmi devices for Intel and NVidia), and the main reason it
took until now to upstream that patch, was the decision to switch jack
detection method from input devices to kcontrols.

Thank you for all the references you provided and your work in fixing
this issue for all users. I just looked at the git repository for the
source code of pulseaudio, but I see your patches have not been
included yet. Do you have any estimate of when they will be merged? if
so, do you think they'll be included in the next release (do you know
when this will be?) ?

I hope they'll be in PulseAudio 2.0, as they are currently waiting for
review. For next release, see [2], but judging from the PulseAudio 1.0
release process - no, I don't know when this will be ;-)

I'm considering reassigning this bug to pulseaudio in debian and
asking them to include the appropriate patches. Which ones would
actually be needed (say, to apply them to pulseaudio 1.1)? would your
6 patches announced on the mailing list in February be enough?

If you want them to apply to PulseAudio 1.1, you can have a look at [1].
The patches currently posted apply to git head. You'll need all of the
06* patches (as well as Linux 3.3 for the kcontrols).

A more light-weight version could be what I did in Ubuntu 11.04, where
there was no jack detection, but I just exposed all four devices in
PulseAudio and let the user choose manually, like this [4]. (I later
renamed that file from "nvidia.conf" to "extra-hdmi.conf", and added the
same file to be used for Intel chips.)

Let me also push for the hda-jack-retask [2] application, which is an
easy-to-use GUI for creating these types of firmware files. I advertised it
here a while ago [3] but it seems to have gone unnoticed.

This sounds like a good tool for making this happen. I will submit a
Request For Package in Debian... but this can take time. Would you
consider packaging it there? then it would easily flow into Ubuntu.

Certainly, if there is interest from the Debian side to have it.

I would also not mind if it became a part of upstream ALSA, I think it
would make a nice addition to the hda-analyzer, hda-verb etc tool set.

I've encountered other hardware with the same issue recently. It's an
NVIDIA card HDA MCP89 on a Macbook Pro 7,1. Is there a method I can
follow for crafting my own "patches"? I'm afraid I don't understand
how to find the appropriate HEX values that need to go in the [codec]
and [pincfg] section.

I think the easiest way is just to download the hda-jack-retask
application and build it yourself. Otherwise, [3].

Thanks all for your help.

You're welcome.

Bug#635317: make 3.82 breaks kernel module build: 'mixed implicit and normal rules' in linux-headers-*

2012-03-03 Thread Ben Hutchings
The Linux kernel build rules were fixed in Linux 2.6.36 and 2.6.32.21.
So this would only affect rebuilding the kernel in oldstable, and mixing
oldstable with unstable is not supported anyway.

However, I would guess there are many other makefiles which can be
broken by the stricter behaviour of make. So I think that make 3.82
will have to wait until after wheezy. But if someone can do an
archive-wide rebuild with the new version now, that would allow
maintainers to start preparing.

Ben.

And why is lighttpd in the archive? Apache can do the same ...

The "hardlink" I used at that time was written in python and definitely didn't
do it the way I want.

hadori is written in C++11 which IMHO makes it look a little more readable. It
started with tree based map and multimap, now it uses the unordered_ (hash
based) versions which made it twice as fast in a typical workload.

The main logic is in hadori.C, handle_file and uses:

std::unordered_map kept;
std::unordered_map to_link;
std::unordered_multimap sizes;

class inode contains a struct stat, a file name and an adler checksum, but I
plan to drop the last one because I think the hashing option is no great gain.

Bug#598745: cmor: FTBFS on kfreebsd-i386: make[1]: *** [test_C] Error 134

2012-03-03 Thread Steven Chamberlain
Hi,

| Aborted
| make[1]: *** [test_C] Error 134

That error is from ./ipcc_test_code trying to run (having been
successfully compiled).

After reading about this at:
>
http://www.alcf.anl.gov/faq-page/what-signal-6-sigabrt-error-during-job-startup
> http://www.ualberta.ca/CNS/RESEARCH/LinuxClusters/mem.html

It seems that test program (ipcc_test_code) needs some 671MiB RAM for
the process image:

$ ./ipcc_test_code
Aborted

$ size ipcc_test_code
   textdata bss dec hex filename
 264737 832 704260100 704525669 29fe3565

This is larger than the kern.maxdsiz boot-time tunable allows, which
seems to be 512MiB by default on kfreebsd-i386 kernel 8.2-1-686. Even
if I skip this test, many other tests have this issue (maybe all of them).

On kfreebsd-amd64, I guess the default kern.maxdsiz is something higher.
That is why it will *sometimes* build, but it still fails about 50% of
the time (bug #661283).

You seem to be correct. Looks like my issue is that I set MALLOC_CHECK_
and MALLOC_PERTURB_ in my shell environment. If I unset them then I get
different failures with the versions from testing. It appears that some
part of the stack is causing heap consistency issues:

http://www.gnu.org/s/libc/manual/html_node/Heap-Consistency-Checking.html
http://udrepper.livejournal.com/11429.html
https://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/devel/2010-May/135667.html

> If you have a sid install around, it would be great if you could try
> git-remote-bzr on that with the current Python package there.

I have unstable in my sources.list, but held back with pinning. After
upgrading python2.7, bzr, python-bzrlib, bzr-git, bzr-gtk I get no
failure cloning bzr-stats with MALLOC_CHECK_ and MALLOC_PERTURB_ unset,
lp:unity fails with a different error and debbugs is taking ages.

That said, the resulting git repositories have some issues with gitk and
the bash shell prompt git functions, bzr-stats for example: git tag
complains about duplicate tags and gitk also complains about an error
parsing revisions.

With upgraded python2.7, bzr, python-bzrlib, bzr-git, bzr-gtk and both
MALLOC_CHECK_ and MALLOC_PERTURB_ *set*, `git clone bzr::lp:bzr-stats`
fails silently and dumps a core file (I have that turned on),
unfortunately the stack trace that results is quite useless.

How do you want to proceed here?

Bug#652301: Please make /var/run a relative symlink

2012-03-03 Thread Christoph Anton Mitterer
So if I understand you right:
- the canonical place where all these dirs are created is base-files
- the migration (of old systems) is however done by initscripts.

We've had previously many issues, where files/permissions/etc. from
base-files changed, but were not updated (like now with nsswitch.conf).

You're arguments were always that you don't wanna make such changes
automatically, as they might not be what the user wants and the things
like ufw or so, would be overkill for a basic package like base-files,
right?

What about adding a small script, that just checks for differences
between the current and "fresh" state all these
files/dirs/permissions/etc. and reports them to the user and also what
he must do to bring it up to date?

Cheers,
Chris.

I recently upgraded my computer, from 1GB of RAM to 4GB (1GB x 4 Corsair Memory
all alike). Suddently, Grub was really,
really slow when booting. The grub's loading message remains on the screen
during 20-30secs before boot. I removed the
memory and when the computer had 2GB of RAM grub booted normally. I set the
memory back and the last feature I didn't
check was the 'AGP Apperture Size' in the BIOS. It was set to 256Mb and I
reduced it step by step. When AGP Apperture Size
was set to 4Mb Grub booted normally.

After that I downgraded to grub-legacy, set AGP Apperture Size back to 256Mb
and grub booted normally as well. Then
I upgraded to grub-pc and grub booted slow again. I can't leave AGP Apperture
Size to 4Mb because openGL performance is
bad as hell (glxgears runs at less than 1fps).

So I think there is a problem with grub-pc. Meanwhile, I'm installing
grub-legacy.

2012-03-03 Thread daniel
Package: php5
Version: 5.3.10-2

Dear Maintainer,
php5 complained about missing libraries; I am not sure if php5 was still
working. The messages below were printed to console and mailed by cron to user
root:

PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library
'/usr/lib/php5/20090626/gd.so' - /usr/lib/php5/20090626/gd.so: cannot open

I got rid of these messages by installing php5-gd, php5-mcrypt and
php5-suhosin. As they didn't reappear when I removed the packages again, I
suppose the installation script should perform some cleanups to configuration
files.

Yours faithfully,

That would be very tricky. The current code is in

/var/lib/dpkg/info/base-files.postinst

and it's executed only once in the initial install (i.e. when you
install a wheezy system from scratch).

AFAIK, the real migration is done by initscripts. Even in that case,
converting old symlinks would be tricky. What if the user wants them
absolute or pointing to another location? (maybe to see how many
packages are still using the old directories) Converting old symnlinks
would be like modifying files in /etc without asking the user, so
IMHO, it should not be done.

> Otherwise they will never benefit from this change.

Hmm, but users can always change the symlinks by hand, and more
important: Because we do not fiddle with already converted symlinks
(which is what you suggested) the symlinks created by the user will be
respected and not changed.

In either case, you should probably ask for this change to be done on
initscripts.

You are right, and I apologise. I had been informed of this by someone
else, but I hadn't got around to lowering/closing this bug (again, my
fault).
I did look at all the files shipped upstream, didn't think to check
d/copyright *sigh*.
please close with impunity!

Bug#662087: Always deletes old ~/.htoprc, even if a symlink to new location ~/.config/htop/htoprc

2012-03-03 Thread Josh Triplett
Package: htop
Version: 1.0.1-1
Severity: normal

I keep my home directory in git, and share it between many machines.
This includes ~/.htoprc. Recent versions of htop moved this to
~/.config/htop/htoprc, and starting a newer version of htop always
deletes ~/.htoprc. However, I also use my home directory on machines
with older versions of htop (such as the version in Debian stable).
Thus, I'd like to include the newer config file as well as a
compatibility symlink from the old location. Please don't delete
~/.htoprc if not a regular file.

is the original bug.

It seems that /var/log/wtmp is being updated by pam_lastlog, but /var/run/utmp
is not, and there's nothing in the pam_lastlog manual page to suggest that it
updates utmp.

The result is that now nothing is updating /var/run/utmp when the user logs
in.

Bug#662084: libparted0debian1: False busy/mounted detection of some sdaX, X > 16, partitions

2012-03-03 Thread Linus Lüssing
Package: libparted0debian1
Version: 2.3-8
Severity: normal

Hi,

Today I tried to create quite a few logical partitions and ended up
having 23 partitions in (g)parted in total.

Some of these, i.e. /dev/sda17 and /dev/sda19, were detected as mounted
and had the lock symbol next to it in gparted. I however could not
unmount and therefore could not delete this partition both within parted
or gparted.

Also a `ls /dev/sda*` or a `cat /proc/partitions` only showed a
/dev/sda1 to /dev/sda16:

---
$ cat /proc/partitions
major minor #blocks name

   80 625131864 sda
   81 81892356 sda1
   824914251 sda2
   83 1 sda3
   84 430013440 sda4
   85 16384 sda5
   86 16384 sda6
   87 16384 sda7
   88 16384 sda8
   89 16384 sda9
   8 10 16384 sda10
   8 11 16384 sda11
   8 12 16384 sda12
   8 13 16384 sda13
   8 14 16384 sda14
   8 15 16384 sda15
 2590 16384 sda16
---

parted 3.1 seems to work fine though. I could delete sda19 to sda23 with
it. And after having deleted those partitions funnilly sda17 to sda18
reappear within /dev and /proc/partitions:

---
$ cat /proc/partitions | grep sda
   80 625131864 sda
   81 81892356 sda1
   824914251 sda2
   83 1 sda3
   84 430013440 sda4
   85 16384 sda5
   86 16384 sda6
   87 16384 sda7
   88 16384 sda8
   89 16384 sda9
   8 10 16384 sda10
   8 11 16384 sda11
   8 12 16384 sda12

 2590 16384 sda16
 2591 16384 sda17
 2592 16384 sda18
---

After having used parted 3.1 and having those partitions reappear in the
kernel's partition table (Linux 3.2.4), parted 2.3.8 still does not work
though:

You might want to try hardlink 0.2~rc1. In any case, I don't think we need
yet another such tool in the archive. If you want that algorithm, we can
implement it in hardlink 0.2 using probably about 10 lines. I had that
locally and it works, so if you want it, we can add it and avoid the
need for one more hack in that space.

hardlink 0.2 is written in C, and uses a binary tree to map
(dev_t, off_t) to a struct file which contains the stat information
plus name for linking. It requires two allocations per file, one for
the struct file with the filename, and one for the node in the tree
(well, actually we only need the node for the first file with a
 specific (dev_t, off_t) tuple). A node has 3 pointers.

Bug#662083: libzip: Testsuite hardcodes ENOENT value

2012-03-03 Thread Samuel Thibault
Source: libzip

Hello,

The testsuite fails on hurd-i386 just because it hardcodes the ENOENT
value:

FAIL: open_nosuchfile.test

Indeed:

$ ./tryopen  nosuchfile
opening `nosuchfile' returned error 11/1073741826

and not

opening `nosuchfile' returned error 11/2

which assumes that ENOENT is 2, but on GNU/Hurd it is 0x4002.

Although primarily meant for power users, it focuses on simplicity: Just

you want them to override to: Headphones, Line Out, Mic, Line In, and so
on. There are buttons for trying it out right away, and for making your

I can tell that from the RC bug history of the package

... but would then have a much larger range of bugs. Test suites are
useful for limiting the number of bugs which users experience. Test
suites become less useful when the tests are susceptible to esoteric
changes and the vagaries of individual build environments because that
causes random and variable build failures. It doesn't help users when
the latest version of the package doesn't complete the tests.

This is not about whether a test suite should or should not be used or
even about how many tests are allowed to fail. (I have a test suite
which is allowed to fail a certain %.) This is about ensuring that the
test suite results are reliable and are not going to randomly fail on
different architectures, buildd machines or developer boxes for reasons
which *should* be unrelated to the build itself - namely the
configuration of the running kernel.

This is particularly true for builds inside chroots because this is
exactly how most buildd's are setup. Stable base, sometimes a customised
kernel, development chroot.

The version and configuration of the kernel on the buildd box should
have *nothing* to do with the package build, including the test suite.

The package is needs to isolate the test suite from anything outside
the buildd chroot, which includes features which are dependent on the
version and/or configuration of the running kernel. Anything else is
just asking for more and more RC bugs and someday, that will cause the
package to be removed.

The test suite should be testing the package, not the buildd
environment.

Bug#662081: Webkit icon cache stored in $XDG_DATA_HOME (~/.local/share); should use $XDG_CACHE_DIR (~/.cache)

2012-03-03 Thread Josh Triplett
Package: libwebkitgtk-3.0-0
Version: 1.6.3-1
Severity: normal

Webkit stores its icon cache in $XDG_DATA_HOME/webkit/icondatabase/
(~/.local/share/webkit/icondatabase/ by default). This specifically has
the semantics of a cache: webkit will load the icons from the web if not
found, and automatically delete old icons after a while (4 days). Thus,
it should go in $XDG_CACHE_DIR/webkit/icondatabase/ (default
~/.cache/webkit/icondatabase/) instead. This move would make it easier
to exclude from backups, remove when cleaning up, and ignore via
..gitignore or similar.

Thanks,
Josh Triplett

Bug#659687: Debian RT - Fix for mysql CVE's needs sponsorship

2012-03-03 Thread Clint Byrum
Hello! I have prepared fixed packages for stable-security and unstable for
mysql-5.1.

They are available in SVN here (these are tagged and ready to upload):

http://anonscm.debian.org/viewvc/pkg-mysql/mysql-5.1/branches/

Or I can upload the raw source packages somewhere if that is
preferred. This is a new upstream version so the orig tarball will need
to be uploaded (it does not need to be repacked so it can be downloaded
using the url in the watch file.)

This is my first time updating a package for security issues, so please
advise me what I should do next.

Thanks!

Bug#636621: Re. debconf (purging /var/cache/debconf)

2012-03-03 Thread Edward Allcutt

limit package debconf
severity 636621 minor
thanks

Quoting fhs-2.3

/var/cache is intended for cached data from applications. Such data is
locally generated as a result of time-consuming I/O or calculation. The
application must be able to regenerate or restore the data. Unlike
/var/spool, the cached files can be deleted without data loss. The data
must remain valid between invocations of the application and rebooting
the system.

Files located under /var/cache may be expired in an application specific
manner, by the system administrator, or both. The application must
always
be able to recover from manual deletion of these files (generally
because
of a disk space shortage). No other requirements are made on the data
format of the cache directories.

The accepted interpretation of the FHS distinguishes normal files from
directories. In particular it is not unusual for directories under /var/cache
to be shipped by a package and owned by a user or group other than root. Such
directories cannot by design be recreated on demand.

This is not a policy violation. Downgrading accordingly but leaving open as
Joey may want to work around this anyway since debconf is one of the packages
that is in a position to handle this.

Rather than filing another 20+ bugs, the other packages to be removed in
the same process are (as per the list sent to devel):

libopensync-plugin-gpe
libopensync-plugin-irmc
libopensync-plugin-kdepim
libopensync-plugin-moto
libopensync-plugin-opie
libopensync-plugin-palm
libopensync-plugin-python

libopensync-plugin-syncml
libopensync-plugin-file
libopensync-plugin-evolution2
multisync0.90
synce-sync-engine
libopensync-plugin-google-calendar
synce-kpm

There should be no other packages involved - this entire chain can be
removed as a set.

Of those, libopensync-plugin-gnokii, libopensync-plugin-gpe,
libopensync-plugin-irmc, libopensync-plugin-kdepim,
libopensync-plugin-moto, libopensync-plugin-opie,
libopensync-plugin-palm and libopensync-plugin-python have versions in
experimental which should also be removed.

Bug#657157: any resolution 657157 important for pytables coming?

2012-03-03 Thread Yaroslav Halchenko
Hi Steve et al,

let me share a piece of news and please let me know if that is
possible that the issue was actually actually an alignment issue while
presenting itself as illop? Does alignment also concerns code blocks
and somehow incorrect opcode was read or what was it? sorry for such a
naive question

Julian Talylor was fixing alignment issue for pytables on arm in
Ubuntu, and I confused his patch considering he was fixing the illop...
I have logged in into harris where I still had that code built -- and
now it was crashing with "bus error", not "ill op"...

As I learn of these issues I fix them, to the extent that the kernel
state is discernible from userspace. The idea of libexplain is to
explain errors, particularly obscure ones caused by kernel config, or
other details the user would have difficulty discovering. (To the
extent that discovery is possible.)

There is support in libexplain for Linux capabilities.

There is not yet any support for the various Linus Sectuty Modules,
although I am bumping into them personally, so that itch may be
scratched soon.

The idea is to produce error messages that actually explain what went
wrong, rather then producing cryptice error messages like "No medium
found". Users aren't, and should not have to be, psychic.

> I'm beginning to think that libexplain is only particularly useful when
> compiled on the machine which is to use it

Given that you can chnage LSM at boot time, it needs to cope with LSM
regimens not present when built. The only things stopping apparmor,
selinux, etc, form be supported is my time.

One of the fascinating things about distributing software with a test
suite is that, if it had no test suite, it would be packaged without
quibble. But if a package has a test suite, and fails a handful out of
600 tests, folks get all alarmed and don't install it. If the
debian/rules didn't run the test suite, you wouldn't be considering
pulling libexplain. There is something broken in this logic.

I'm considering reassigning this bug to pulseaudio in debian and
asking them to include the appropriate patches. Which ones would
actually be needed (say, to apply them to pulseaudio 1.1)? would your
6 patches announced on the mailing list in February be enough?

This sounds like a good tool for making this happen. I will submit a
Request For Package in Debian... but this can take time. Would you
consider packaging it there? then it would easily flow into Ubuntu.

Thanks all for your help.

Cheers,

Andres

Bug#602463: Still interested in packaging clanlib2?

2012-03-03 Thread Fabien Givors (Debian packages)

Hash: SHA1

Hi Andreas,

Yes, I opened bug #602463 some time ago...

I did most of the packaging. Unfortunately, I couldn't get rid of some
lintian warnings. So, the package is not perfect.

I can give you the product of my work if you want. It worked quite well.

After seeking for a sponsor and trying to contact the maintainers of
clanlib-1.0 package, I realized that the good way to do was to contact
the Debian Games Team. Unfortunately, at the same time, my spare time
amount began to decrease dramatically :) And I was not able to pursue
my task.

Currently, last clanlib version is 2.3.5 [1], and the API does not
seem to have changed a lot [2]. So, the question is, should we package
the last "stable" 2.2 version, or the last released version?

I hope we will be able to work together,

Bug#662080: ITP: hadori -- Hardlinks identical files

2012-03-03 Thread Timo Weingärtner
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
X-Debbugs-CC: debian-de...@lists.debian.org

   Package name: hadori
Version: 0.2
Upstream Author: Timo Weingärtner
URL: https://github.com/tiwe-de/hadori
License: GPL3+
Description: Hardlinks identical files
This might look like yet another hardlinking tool, but it is the only one
which only memorizes one filename per inode. That results in less merory
consumption and faster execution compared to its alternatives. Therefore
(and because all the other names are already taken) it's called
 "HArdlinking DOne RIght".
 .
 Advantages over other hardlinking tools:
  * predictability: arguments are scanned in order, each first version is kept
  * much lower CPU and memory consumption
  * hashing option: speedup on many equal-sized, mostly identical files

The initial comparison was with hardlink, which got OOM killed with a hundred
backups of my home directory. Last night I compared it to duff and rdfind
which would have happily linked files with different st_mtime and st_mode.

I need a sponsor. I'll upload it to mentors.d.n as soon as I get the bug
number.

Greetings
Timo
