Hi!

These packages are transitional packages for the binary package ruby-eb, due
to a change in the naming convention for Ruby packages. Therefore, they should
be considered as oldlibs, and as such, their priority sould be set to extra.

apart from the two obvious things (debian-installer and debian-cd) that
do need to be updated to copy in the additionally required c32 modules
when using vesamenu.c32, there's only vbox broken.

while i can see that one is inclined to jump to the conclusion that now
each and every package in debian needs an update, it really isn't so.

no package is directly interacting with a bootloader, except those that
create images (debian-installer, debian-cd), or boot images *and* have
bugs fixed-upstream-long-time-ago-but-not-in-debian (vbox).

again, note that any other virtualization software, be it in wheezy
directly (qemu, kvm) or otherwise (parallels, vmware) which i've tested
with, has no bugs with syslinux 5. it's an isolated thing that vbox
still has that bug in debian.

Imho, yes. But then, it's not up to me to decide.

This list is getting longer with each email. Seeing that syslinux 5 has
been in sid for less then 10 days, I'm worried what other issues might
show up.
While I can understand (from personal experience) that freeze-time is
sometimes frustrating, delaying the release even further doesn't help
anyone.
If we want to improve our procedures, how we handle d-i, freeze etc, now
is not the time to discuss/work on this.

Just my 2¢

'obvious'?

it requires two straight forward things, that, again, as said, are
required to be applied for jessie anyway, and are wherey much desired to
be applied on the wheezy source (to build images with syslinux backports):

  * patch applied against debian-installer to include the additionally
required .c32 modules when using vesamenu.c32

  * patch applied against debian-cd to include the additionally required
.c32 modules when using vesamenu.c32

and fixing one temporary breakage in vbox for convenience:

  * cherry-pick upstream commit to fix a bug in vbox

not more, not less.

Bug#699948: base-files: sudo su - reports -su: [: f: unary operator expected, but proceeds anyway.

2013-02-06 Thread Demetris Demetriou
Package: base-files
Version: 7.1
Severity: normal

Typing "sudo su - " reports:
-su: [: f: unary operator expected

A different variation of the same problem affects squeeze as well, this time
with error:
-su: /root/.bashrc: line 20: syntax error: unexpected end of file

The cause of these errors is the if function at the end of the file
/root/.bashrc.

wheezy:

if [ ! f $USER ]
then
  /usr/bin/mesg n
fi

squeeze (not 100% sure, copied from memory):

if [ ! -f $USER ]\nthen /usr/bin/mesg n\nfi

Differences between the two: before $USER notice the f and -f, squeeze all on
same line.

Commenting these lines fixes the reported error.

I think it is obvious by now that reverting to syslinux 4 from wheezy is
the only sensible way forward at this point in the release.

You mean for any hypervisor? Libvirt doesn't necessarily now that other
guests are running. How would we reliably detect this?

first, this is a specific bug in vbox that was fixed some time ago but
didn't make it into debian yet (because it lags a significant amount of
upstream releases behind; and yes, i should and will fill a bug about it
at some later point).

How many (old) hardware machines has something
similar too? And how much more testing we need to declare that everything
we use is compatible?

second, if you follow the bug, it's affecting sid and doesn't affect
wheezy release images - they will have the same tested and working
syslinux version that has proven to be stable during d-i alpha/beta
images (unless i'm missing something and d-i *release* images are built
with sid packages as well, in which case i personally would consider
such a misfeature to be in critical need of a fix (iirc steve puts a
local copy of the 'to be used' syslinux version to be used by debian-cd
for release images manually on the local fs; not sure about the same
that ends up in the final release copy of debian-installer-images, will
check later on)).

Well, VBOX is pretty popular, so shipping an installer which doesn't

Bug#699947: ifupdown: Does not allow avahi-autoipd to run from dhcp exit script due to -1 option

2013-02-06 Thread Rich d'Rich
Package: ifupdown
Version: 0.7.5
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,
*** Please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?
   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
   * What was the outcome of this action?
   * What outcome did you expect instead?

*** End of the template - remove these lines ***
I've been working on getting avahi-autoipd to work as a fallback to DHCP.
The desired functionality is that if no DHCP server is found, an IP address
gets autoallocated.

I've found that the -1 option to dhclient stops the FAIL (etc) events from
being given
to the exit scripts if the dhcp fails. This stops the zzz_avahiautoipd script
from running.

My patch for this was to replace dhclient with a script that ran dhclient with
no '-1' option. This got more or less the desired functionality (I can supply
scripts and logs)

Could we have an option to suppress the '-1'? See also #694541

Bug#653300: Confirm

2013-02-06 Thread RYAN SCHOPPMEYER (RIT Student)
I'm experiencing extremely similar behavior.

You have not included the output of the script so it's difficult to tell if
our situations are really identical, but I have discovered that placing the
iso directory on a different partition than the memdisk directory will
cause grub to be unable to find the memdisk kernel.

The grub script will first change the root to the partition containing the
ISOs, then open the iso via loopback, then attempt to start memdisk using a
relative path. Since the isos are not on the same partition as memdisk,
the bootloader will fail to find memdisk.

I patched this problem by changing one line of
/etc/grub.d/60_grub-imageboot from:
linux16 $MEMDISKPATH $options
to:
linux16 $($grub_probe -t drive "$MEMDISKPATH")$MEMDISKPATH $options

this will write out "linux16 (hdX,msdosY)/boot/memdisk" instead of "linux16
/boot/memdisk" and should fix this issue.

Bug#699946: dput: Add a way to specify additional rsync options

2013-02-06 Thread Alexander List
Package: dput
Version: 0.9.6.2ubuntu2
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

Dear Maintainer,

I noticed that dput has issues for ppl behind DSL lines, with stalling
uploads
using ftp, scp or even rsync.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dput/+bug/193848

I observed this also doing manual scp, ftp and rsync, so it's just a matter
of poor congestion handling by the router, and not necessarily a bug in
dput.

However, I've added an option to the rsync method to specify additional
options
and added a hint in the manpage on how to use this feature with --bwlimit=50

In my case, limiting the bandwidth to half what's available upstream
mitigated
the problem. I assume this is useful for others as well.

This addresses the request in #358195 at least for rsync. However, it might
be useful to implement this also for the other methods in a future release.

The change is available here:

https://github.com/alexlist/dput/commit/ddf60e03b6ece4533b1627227680024acbc16c0f

Please consider applying it upstream.

Bug#637685: creates database accessible to anyone from localhost

2013-02-06 Thread Daniel Richard G.
This does seem like a needless security weak point.

For folks who don't live and breath MySQL (like me), here is a procedure
to change the database password:

(in a root shell)

# invoke-rc.d zoneminder stop

# rights='lock tables, alter, select, insert, update, delete'

# zmpass=$(pwgen -1s)# set this variable to the new password

# echo "grant $rights on zm.* to zmuser@localhost identified by
\"$zmpass\";" \
  | mysql --defaults-file=/etc/mysql/debian.cnf mysql

# perl -pi -e "s,^(ZM_DB_PASS)=.*\$,\$1=$zmpass," /etc/zm/zm.conf

# invoke-rc.d zoneminder start

As for tightening up the permissions on /etc/zm/zm.conf, that can only
go so far, since ZoneMinder runs as user www-data and needs to be able
to read the file. This works:

# chgrp www-data /etc/zm/zm.conf

# chmod g=r,o= /etc/zm/zm.conf

A compromised Web service can still get the password, but that's better
than allowing it to any local user.

Hi,

Plugin module not found in 'module-path';
module-path='/usr/lib/syslog-ng/3.3.5', module='afsql'
Error creating persistent state file;
filename='/var/lib/syslog-ng/syslog-ng.persist-', error='No such file or

The /var/lib/syslog-ng directory is not created when running systemd.
You have two options:
1/ use a tmpfiles snippet [1]
2/ use ExecStartPre= to create the state directory

While tmpfiles are generally the recommended approach, you need to keep
in mind, that we currently don't have the necessary maintainer script
code to run those on install time. They are currently only run on boot.
If you chose to use tmpfile, make sure to also create /var/lib/syslog-ng
in postinst.

If you need further help or information, please don't hesitate to ask.

Cheers,
Michael

It is possible to define an architecture for which only linux-libc-dev

People have working kernels so why not provide a working config file?
This package can be fully cross-built, not just for linux-libc-dev.

Are any patches still required for 3.7 (or 3.8, as it will be out soon)?

If so please just provide the commit hashes, or patches following DEP-3
format or as in Linux stable branches (my script for this is in svn as

I see no problem at all with this, but you mustn't define this by
hand-editing debian/control! Add a [base]compiler field to the
debian/config/arm64/defines file.

Could some ARM porter please review this for inclusion in
squeeze/wheezy? The provided patch was for 2.6.32; I don't know whether
it would also work for 3.2.

According to the manufacturer's web site:
http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Product/Product_Detail.aspx?DetailID=1094&CategoryID=1&DetailName=Feature&MenuID=17&LanID=0
there is an optional LVDS connector on the board. It may not be
possible to tell whether or not it's actually fitted.

What problem is this causing? Does it limit the VGA resolution?

Bug#686844: gksudo for users other than root fails

2013-02-06 Thread Edward Ross

Same problem here. I'm using the following:
debian squeeze release 6.0.6
kernel 2.6.32-5-amd64
gnome 2.30.2
gksu 2.0.2-5

Occasionally I have to edit files owned by system users such as tomcat6
and postgres.

I can use:

$ gksudo -l gedit

or

$ gksu -u  -l gedit

which do work. Unfortunately, in the first case, any new files I create
are then owned by root and I subsequently am forced to change their
ownership; and in the second case I am asked for the root password,
which I tend to forget.

I should think that:

$ gksudo -u  -l gedit

should do what I need, i.e. ask me for my own password and run gedit as
; however, after I enter my password in the provided dialog,
I get the following error message in the terminal where I entered the
command:

(gksudo:11626): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_str_has_prefix: assertion `str !=
NULL' failed

I have found the same behavior when attempting to run other gui
programs, such as gnome-terminal, by this method.

I have found two ugly workarounds:

I can add read permissions, via sudo chmod, for everyone to directory
/var/run/gdm3/auth-for-edward-/ and to file
/var/run/gdm3/auth-for-edward-/database. Then whenever I need
to edit, say a postgres file, I can sudo su to postgres and run gedit.
It works, for a while that is, until is changed by the
system, and I suspect it opens a security hole.

Alternatively, I can successfully run this redundant incantation:

$ gksudo "gksu -u  -l gedit "

which seems to takes advantage of the fact that gksudo works for user
root. It also starts about 10 processes on my machine, although I'm not
sure that is an issue.

Imho, one of two things should happen: either the -u option should be
removed from gksudo, oficially restricting it to run gui commands under
root only; or it should be fixed such that it can run gui commands as
other users, as permitted by the sudoers file of course.

If I can be of any further assistance, please let me know.

Edward

Bug#699940: please include plasma applet and dataengine into qstardict package

2013-02-06 Thread Nick Shaforostoff
Package: qstardict
Version: 0.12.9-1.1

Please include a plasma interface to stardict dictionaries.

to get it built you need to enter the folder of official qstardict sources (btw
there is a newer version available 1.0.1), then:
cd kdeplasma
mkdir build
cd build
cmake .. -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/usr
make
make install

the following files need to be added to the package:

/usr/lib/kde4/plasma_applet_qstardict.so
/usr/share/kde4/services/plasma-qstardict-default.desktop
/usr/lib/kde4/plasma_engine_qstardict.so
/usr/share/kde4/services/plasma-dataengine-qstardict.desktop

there is no need to add a runtime dependency on any plasma-related package
(only build-time)
If one doesn't have KDE installed (which actually should not be the case --
because GTK-lovers would install pure stardict instead), then the libraries
just won't be picked up by anything. they are separate from the main qstardict
application.
but if KDE is present, then a good behaviour would be to run 'kbuildsycoca4' as
a post-install step.

The main advantage of the applet over a separate application is that although
it is always 'running', it unloads all the dictionaries after being unused for
several seconds. This way it creates no additional memory load (which could be
tens of megabytes) and hence may be enabled all the time.

Saving RAM is important e.g. for netbook users.

I've attached a debdiff for 2.88dsf-40. This contains a some
small changes to the sysvinit postinst to correct some problems
identifying and signalling init on Hurd and when using LXC
containers, which were not fully addressed in the previous
upload. It should now be completely robust when restarting
for all use cases.

I'm away until Monday the 11th from now, but if there are any
issues with this, I'll be happy to look into them next week.

Regards,
Roger

I personally think it's exactly the same problem. I think the situation
with libraries is regrettable as well. (Note that, and I'm guessing I
speak for Bdale here too, "regrettable" is not intended to assign any sort
of blame! This is the best solution that we've been able to come up with
to date as a project. It's just still has some problems.)

Yes. It's always a source of some tension, since there are always people
who would prefer to have a place to continue to do development in an
unstable context even during the release process. (Cue the standard
debate over the usability of experimental for this purpose -- I'm sure
nearly everyone reading this can fill it in from memory. *grin*)

If we could find a way to release some of that tension, that would be
great, but it's a hard problem, and there's no way that we're going to
come up with a solution to it right now in the middle of the wheezy
freeze.

2013-02-06 Thread Clayton
I just discovered this does not happen on the XFCE desktop, but ALWAYS
happens on the LXDE desktop. Perhaps this should be handed over to the
LXDE people?
