Bug#714232: tsort manual page does not describe input format
brian m. carlson wrote: Bob Proulx wrote: This illustrates a basic philosophical difference between GNU systems and traditional Unix systems. In a traditional Unix system the standard for documentation was the man page. Mostly because there wasn't anything better. But as GNU is not Unix the GNU system vision was to improve upon Unix. One area of improvement was documentation. Man pages have been around for a very long time but they also have a lot of drawbacks. It isn't suitable for printing as a book. There is no linking between manuals. Other things. Therefore in the upstream GNU system the preferred documentation format is texinfo documentation which was specifically designed for those needs. I personally think man pages are fine for printing. groff formats them very nicely indeed. Note that I said printing as a book and man pages don't print well as books. They print fine as reference pages. But I'm aware of the philosophical difference between Debian and the GNU project. I tend to agree with Debian on this one, and I far prefer man pages over info documents. Fair enough. As they say, there is no accounting for taste. :-) I don't view info as an improvement on man, except maybe that its HTML support is better. I strongly disagree. Info is a huge improvement over man pages. Man pages make good quick reference pages. But man pages are not well suited to other types of documentation such as user guides and books. On a Debian system that command will give you access to the full tsort manual. If you don't like the default 'info' (because perhaps you are a vi key user) then you may also use 'pinfo' or 'info --vi-keys' instead to get vi-style keybinding. pinfo coreutils 'tsort invocation' info --vi-keys coreutils 'tsort invocation' I honestly avoid info if at all possible. I was not aware of --vi-keys, but even with that option, the keybindings are bizarre (like the fact that Page Up and Page Down don't stop at the top of the page) which makes it miserable to work with. pinfo's keybindings are not much better. Perhaps a vi user could improve the keybindings for those programs? (Also, the pinfo invocation you provided doesn't actually work.) Oh! Sorry. It does get to the coreutils section but not to tsort. I guess it needs the node set as an option. This works: pinfo coreutils --node='tsort invocation' And 'j' and 'k' go up and down. It stops at the top and bottom of the page. PageUp and PageDown work and both stop at the top and bottom of the page. (shrug) I probably should mention that the latest upstream version of the documetantion is also available online as web pages: http://www.gnu.org/software/coreutils/manual/ And tsort in particular is here: http://www.gnu.org/software/coreutils/manual/html_node/tsort-invocation.html#tsort-invocation But the latest upstream version and any particular packaged version may be different. Therefore I still prefer to use the installed documentation that matches the installed version of the programs. The standards documents are also online. http://pubs.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/009695399/utilities/tsort.html And just because I will note that the FreeBSD man pages are also available online too. A useful resource for an alternate free(dom) implementation. http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi I much prefer man and groff because they actually use my pager, which I can configure with whatever keybindings and highlighting I'd like. A good point. I can go on and on about the reasons I don't like info, but that really isn't relevant to this bug report. Your bug report implies that there isn't any documentation on the tsort input format. But that is incorrect since there *is* documentation on it. The documentation is in texinfo format. And it describes the input format that you are wishing to know about. My bug report indicates clearly that the *manual page* is inadequate because it does not specify the input format. I did not comment on the info documentation, mostly because I don't care very much about its adequacy. Well... The man page documents that the full documentation is elsewhere. It describes how to access it. The access does work. The documentation is there. The information you are asking for is there. It is frustrating to me that you are dismissing info out of hand due to subjectively not liking it. That type of reasoning is symetrical but opposite to the GNU reasoning for requiring info documentation. But there is one difference that breaks the symmetry. The upstream primary documentation format exists in info format not man format. To do anything else requires work to do something else. So far no one has decided to replace the upstream GNU man pages with something different and continuously do the work keep them updated as the programs change. That would be an unreasonable amount of effort. Honestly, I feel the

Bug#679888: gnome-commander: Port to libpoppler25 API
Michael, Alessio, Alle venerdì 13 luglio 2012, Pino Toscano ha scritto: Alle lunedì 2 luglio 2012, Andy Whitcroft ha scritto: We are using this patch in Ubuntu to handle the changes in libpoppler's API version 19 to version 25/26. Bug#686777: netjack2 + opus custom modes + debian
On 06/30/2013 03:11 AM, Ron wrote: My understanding of the background prior to that is that Robin had some discussion with some of the developers at FOMS, who at the time suggested the custom modes probably would be appropriate for the use described to them. correct. derf aka Tim Terriberry in this case. [..] The custom modes are not interoperable with anything else, nor are they a part of the codec standard, but they do exist in the code for people with very specialised needs in 'closed' applications, where the need for oddball frame sizes strongly outweighs any other considerations of interoperability, or codec performance (the latter being both in the sense of processing resources *and* more importantly audio quality). jack in particular was one of the use-cases for opus-devs to justify custom modes. My understanding at present is that the primary (only?) reason that netjack is using custom modes is so that it can use 64 sample frames which shaves ~1ms of latency off the usual 2.5ms (120 sample) minimum frame size for normal opus modes. We didn't quite get to the bottom of all of that before Robin had to leave, so at present my only understanding of the reason for that is that pro audio equipment can operate with lower latencies than normal sound cards which makes this desirable. not quite. netjack is using opus custom modes so that jack can use the same period-size across the complete jack system. Adding buffering on either side (sender + receiver) to align jack + opus buffers will always result in additional latency. For large jack buffersizes or long-distance communication that additional latency may be negligible, but it still is more latency. Furthermore, aligning non-audio jack-data (transport + MIDI) with sample accuracy to those opus-audio-buffers is far from trivial. It's not impossible, but it is quite complex because jack is not designed to cater for that case. What I still don't understand though is why if you are using Pro audio equipment the degradation in audio quality that this would bring (which is significant) would be acceptable for that use? a) because some users demand it :) b) because celt is no longer available on most distros low, fixed latency is most important. There are countless solutions for high-quality streaming - where latency and jitter is irrelevant, but basically only netjack that provides synchroneous low latency. [..] Which basically makes the question become: If you are using Pro audio equipment and ~1ms of latency does make a difference to you, then wouldn't a lossless transport mode be more appropriate for that anyway? on a LAN, yes lossless. Over Wifi it may make sense to compress lossy to accommodate more channels. On WAN there are e.g. remote jam-sessions, phone relays, live monitoring,.. - none of which requires high quality, but all require fixed low latency. [..] The upstream developers have reaffirmed that they definitely do not want to enable the custom modes by default in what they release, so even if we do override that here for the .debs, there'll still be a question of our compatibility with other distros and users. yes, the solution for that would be to add opus as git-submodule to jack and statically link netjack against it. That'd also accommodate windows, OSX and *BSD builds of jackd. [..] - Can jack really make a case for needing this in a way that actually delivers real benefits to jack users. (Robin has said that this is also 'complicated', but I still don't fully understand why yet). see above. Sample-sync alignment with other data-types is not easy. Asynchronous (buffered) communication is orthogonal to everything else in jack. It will likely be rejected upstream. jack does not aim to do everything. JACK tries to address 95% and do that right and not care about the last 5% edge-cases. On top of of that, there are currently no volunteers to implement vanilla opus on netjack2 (and also no volunteer to implement that in netjack1). I was scratching my own itch with netjack2+opus. works for me. The only case for non-custom modes would be: 1) interoperability with other opus apps 2) higher quality encoding (1) is never going to work out. netjack consists of N audio-channels, M midi-channels. Both include per-port latencies (min, max). And netjack also comprises transport information (timecode, tempo, bar-beat-tick, audio-frames per video-frame, etc). It is not a data stream that will be consumed by non-jack. (2) if a user chooses lossy encoding s/he does not really care about quality anyway. jack's main features is no-copy zero-latency with local clients, being able to include remote clients on the network that align sample-sync and respond reliably is the main use-case. ciao, robin -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#714604: libc6-dev: RUSAGE_THREAD constant not exported
Package: libc6-dev Version: 2.13-38 Severity: normal Hi, When including sys/time.h and sys/resource.h as the getrusage manpage says, RUSAGE_THREAD is not defined. For example, the following code fails to compile: #include sys/time.h #include sys/resource.h int main() { struct rusage usage; int r; r = getrusage(RUSAGE_THREAD, usage); r = getrusage(RUSAGE_SELF, usage); return 0; } with: error: ‘RUSAGE_THREAD’ undeclared (first use in this function) Doing a grep in /usr/include it seems it should be defined to 1 and now I'm using: #ifndef RUSAGE_THREAD #define RUSAGE_THREAD 1 #endif as a workaround. I'm not sure if this is the package I should report it, but as far as I checked it seems that with these headers it should be defined (instead of a bug in the manpage or something else). Sorry if I'm wrong :-S Also, if you want me to try something, just let me know! Bug#705116: still present in 3.2.46-1
Hi, FYI, a same freeze happened with 3.2.46-1 (and previously with 3.2.41-2+deb7u2), on the same machine. A Xscreensaver display was frozen on the screen, and there was no answer to ping, and nothing in logs. No such problem was observed with 3.8.13-1 or 3.9.6-1. Bug#714613: ap_log_perror ignores LogLevel configuration directives
Source: apache2 Version: 2.4.4-6 Severity: normal Tags: upstream Hi, This problem bit me while I was trying to debug merging configurations within an apache module. The interface you get is: void *merge_dir_config(apr_pool_t *p, void* base, void *new) so the only logging function you can use is ap_log_perror. Internally, that calls log_error_core with NULL s, c, r arguments (server_rec, conn_rec, request_rec); log_error_core has the following code: if (s == NULL) { /* * If we are doing stderr logging (startup), don't log messages that are * above the default server log level unless it is a startup/shutdown * notice */ if ((level_and_mask != APLOG_NOTICE) (level_and_mask ap_default_loglevel)) { return; } logf = stderr_log; } which means that however you configure LogLevel, ap_log_perror won't result in anything being logged unless you set the level to = ap_default_loglevel (which is APLOG_WARNING). Since this is the only way to log the behaviour of config-merging code (which you'd naturally want to log at DEBUG or similar), I think this is a bug. This bug exists in both the stable (2.2 series) and unstable (2.4) series of Apache. Hi Luis, I wonder whether you are aware of bug #710645 and whether you have some solution for this problem. I'd bet it is simple for a C++ programmer. If you have trouble fixing it please state this explicitly and ask for help on the Debian Med mailing list. I'd recommend subscribing the package in the Package Tracking System. The packages can be found in the attached dd-list. The packages have been selected based on the following criteria: - The package had at least one RC bug without activity for the past 14 days. - If a bug is assigned to multiple packages, both packages will be affected[1]. - The RC bug affects both unstable and testing. - The affected package does not have any reverse dependencies in testing. - One of their RC bugs had FTBFS in their title. (*) - The source package had a popcon inst value of 500 or less. (*) (*) These extra filter rules was applied to keep the list down. The original list was 246. If the relevant RC bugs in the affected packages (those listed in FTBFS-w-popcon-lt-500.txt) are not dealt with before the 8th of July, the packages will be removed from testing. Note that dealt with may also include downgrading a severity-inflated bug or fixing affected versions in the BTS. For reference, the original list is also included. Bug#714614: debhelper: A better way to check for make targets
Package: debhelper Version: 9.20130630 Severity: normal Dear Maintainer, in light of recent make target detection code bugs #706923, #707481, #713257 I have yet another one. Using hello source package with following rules file debian/compat 9: %: dh $@ override_dh_auto_test: mkdir -p test dh_auto_test Results in testsuite target check to not be executed. since `make -s -n test` exits with 0 nothing to be done with test. But looking at bash-completion package it does manage to correctly detect that test target doesn't exist, yet check target does. Bash-completion executes this to find all make targets: make -qp | awk -F':' '/^[a-zA-Z0-9][^$#\/\t=]*:([^=]|$)/ \ {split($1,A,/ /);for(i in A)print A[i]}' Maybe something similar to above can be used to search for make targets in debhelper? No, i almost checked all calls , but at the use of functions like syslog, vsyslog, snprintf, vfprintf since you have used buffer in log_msg() and we don't know its content (maybe %x , %n) and then used by vsnprintf , it is highly recommended to use a format string to block the way of exploiting by an attacker. so for ex. instead of : #if defined(HAVE_SYSLOG) syslog(priority, buffer); i should use : #if defined(HAVE_SYSLOG) syslog(priority, %s, buffer); also in other function that i mentioned above , use an exact format string is recomended. thanks for your response, Hamid Zamani

Why does dpkg-shlibdeps not add libglapi-mesa as a dependency / how can I get dpkg-shlibdeps to do that? I'd much rather avoid hardcoding dependencies if at all possible. Simply because the lib is never linked in. It is dlopen'ed: $ grep -r PRIMUS_LOAD_GLOBAL * libglfork.cpp:needed_global(dlopen(getconf(PRIMUS_LOAD_GLOBAL), RTLD_LAZY | RTLD_GLOBAL)), dpkg-shlibdeps simply read the output of readelf -d /usr/lib/bla.so. So in this case yes you have to explicitly add the Depends yourself -IMHO-. Maybe there are other way to do it, but I do not know. HTH After a short conversation with upstream [1], I believe that this is more likely than not some sort of packaging issue with mesa. Mesa in all currently supported versions of Debian is built with --enable-shared-glapi, so theoretically libgl1-mesa-glx (which contains mesa's libGL.so.1) should pull in libglapi-mesa automatically. That's definitely the case on my current jessie/sid system: $ apt-cache depends libgl1-mesa-glx | grep glapi Depends: libglapi-mesa i.e. we shouldn't have to declare an explicit dependency on libglapi-mesa. libglapi-mesa only appears in wheezy, ref: http://packages.debian.org/unstable/libglapi-mesa Ack, so primus isn't going to work on squeeze as-is. Hmmm...if you'd still like to see bumblebee and co. backported to squeeze, I suppose you could try using virtualgl instead. However, it's not packaged yet (on my todo list, but you're welcome to take over if you want), and it'd also require backporting of its dependencies (libjpeg-turbo, which I imagine wouldn't be trivial to backport). Your package thus: 1. does not work on oldstable (squeeze), and any derivatives at that point 2. does not list a required dependency (what if the ABI changes ?) 3. any new arch added to debian (or derivatives), where mesa is built with --disable-shared-glapi will not work As described in the bug report upstream, this is a clear dependency and is a requirerment. I do not understand why you would not want to clarify that at debian/control level... As far as I understand, what upstream is trying to say is that there's simply no valid way to express primus' dependencies using debian/control syntax. Just because libglapi-mesa exists as a package and is installed, doesn't mean that primus will actually be functional. As an example (provided by upstream, just paraphrasing here), the mesa maintainers could one day stop building mesa opengl with --enable-shared-glapi, and still provide libglapi-mesa as a package (e.g. by building mesa OpenGL ES with --enable-shared-glapi instead), then primus would be installable with libglapi-mesa as a dependency, but still be broken. Again, AFAIU upstream's argument boils down to it simply being impossible to clarify that at debian/control level, that just because libglapi-mesa is installable, does not guarantee that primus would work, so depending on libglapi-mesa serves no purpose. As for point (2): amonakov: libglapi is an implementation detail of Mesa. primus does not depend on libglapi itself (there is no documented public interface to depend on So I guess that in effect, primus can break at any time, and adding a dependency on libglapi-mesa does nothing to stop this from happening? I understand (1) (3) should be very rare event. However (2) is pretty clear, see §8.6 Dependencies between the library and other packages http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-sharedlibs.html#s-sharedlibs-depends [Other packages which use a shared library (for example using dlopen()) should compute appropriate dependencies using these files at build time as well.] A bit of a tangent, but should != must. Bug#714620: acpi-support: Laptop's display won't wake from DPMS off state on lid open event with xrandr method
Package: acpi-support Version: 0.140-5 Severity: normal Tags: patch Dear Maintainer, There is a problem with waking from DPMS off state then my laptop's lid is open while using xrandr. Usage scenario: 1. Set DISPLAY_DPMS=xrandr and XRANDR_OUTPUT=LVDS1 options in /etc/default/acpi-support files. 2. Close the lid, Laptop panel go dark. 3. Open the lid and nothing happens, screen remain dark, keyboard and mouse movements does not help. I have discovered that the problem lies in /etc/acpi/lid.sh on line 35: xrandr invoked with hardcoded output 'LVDS', but my Intel KMS driver assign 'LVDS1' name. I suggest to use variable with default value, for example: xrandr --output ${XRANDR_OUTPUT:-LVDS} --auto Same can be applied in /usr/share/acpi-support/screenblank: xrandr --output ${XRANDR_OUTPUT:-LVDS} --off This worked just fine until I have uncommented LID_SLEEP=true option. I think that some race condition is happening in such case: then lid was closed, screenblank script invokes xrandr with --off and laptop immediately goes to sleep. It seems display does not have time to actually turn off by xrandr, it was turned off by pm-suspend. And then laptop awake, lid open event occurs and display is enabling by lid.sh. But it is turning off in next moment, that brings me to the original problem described above. I added 'sleep' after xrandr and it works, but it's not clean solution I suppose. Maybe we really don't need to do DPMS off while going to sleep? Bug#714613: ap_log_perror ignores LogLevel configuration directives
On Monday 01 July 2013, Matthew Vernon wrote: Source: apache2 Version: 2.4.4-6 Severity: normal Tags: upstream Hi, This problem bit me while I was trying to debug merging configurations within an apache module. The interface you get is: void *merge_dir_config(apr_pool_t *p, void* base, void *new) so the only logging function you can use is ap_log_perror. Since the server config does not yet exist at this stage, that is correct. which means that however you configure LogLevel, ap_log_perror won't result in anything being logged unless you set the level to = ap_default_loglevel (which is APLOG_WARNING). Since this is the only way to log the behaviour of config-merging code (which you'd naturally want to log at DEBUG or similar), I think this is a bug. You can set ap_default_loglevel with the -e command line option. I guess this could be documented better. But to debug stuff before/during the first config parsing, this is is all you get. There is also the possibility to use ap_log_error() with ap_server_conf as server_rec. But IIRC, this is not safe in 2.2, though. Maybe the behavior of ap_log_perror() can be improved to use the main server's loglevel after the config has been created, though. I will look at it when I have some time. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact listmas...@lists.debian.org

Thus I reported: ruby-net-ssh: can't add a new key into hash during iteration during ssh.exec http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=714606 https://github.com/net-ssh/net-ssh/issues/110 Then I tried to work-around with using ruby-net-sftp rename! function and ran into: Bug 2123 - does not seem to support sftp protocol version 5 rename flag for overwriting files https://bugzilla.mindrot.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2123 please support protocol version 3 (posix-ren...@openssh.com) https://github.com/net-ssh/net-sftp/issues/31 ruby-net-scp does not seem to support renames. Now it does work with Ruby 1.9 by using SFTP work-around of first deleting the old authorized_keys file and renaming authorized_keys.new afterwards. I do not like this work-around, cause in a (I think unlikely) race it could result in no authorized_keys file on server, but for now I do not have any other idea. I documented the work-around in the changelog and like to fix it once another way of doing it becomes applicable. Please review. Bug#701250: Camitk Debian package needs some love [was: Candidates for removal from testing (2013-06-30)]
Sounds like a reasonable plan. The only thing that would deserve some enhancement for the future is that it helps if you publish this plan straight to the bug report a bit earlier because this saves us from developing heart attacks in fearing to loose a package in testing. ;-) Duly noted. Sorry for wasting some of your time (and your heart!) by not writing my intention about bugs (especially this RC bugs). In fact I wanted to do that much earlier (before the 3.2 release) and publish a patch, which I see now might have been a better way. I am still learning a lot thanks to debian-med (and still in my MoM in fact!). Thank you again for your work and vigilance! Bug#714617: Lingot: several vulnerabilities
severity 714617 normal thanks thank you for your report. the problems you identify are bugs, but I think 'critical' is far to high, there is no security risk as lingot runs unpriviledged, and most of the problems are only triggered by active action.
