Hi Olivier;

There seems to be a problem with emacsen-common, rather than notmuch per
se. The problem is notmuch .el files are sometimes not getting
byte-compiled during installation.

Try

   dpkg-reconfigure emacs24

or if that doesn't work

   aptitude reinstall emacsen-common

After the above step(s) you will need to re-install notmuch-emacs

Bug#734171: Network install does not work with I-217V ethernet controller

2014-01-06 Thread Zach Morgan
This is addressed in an ANCIENT bug report. My organization has worked
around it for months. Please don't act like you're the only one affected by
stable's slow uptake of drivers.

If you want "desktop" support, use a "desktop" distro.
Quoting Igor Levicki (i...@levicki.net):

> Exactly what is preventing you to add new driver module which
> supports both old and new hardware?

What? Easy to understand: you doing the work.

Of course that requires also you to understand how the Debian kernel
team work is organized, how the Debian stable releases are maintained,
what does the "stable" word mean in English and a lot of other things
you apparently fail to really get a picture of, as of now.

That really understandable, no offense intended: we don't really
expect people to immediately understand how a volunteer project with
over one thousand contributors and no commercial organization behind
it, is organized. Just like we don't expect people to teach us lessons
about how we should be working when they don't really know how our
work is organized.

I understand that the processing speed of OpenCV can be improved by
using a nonfree module. And, I also understand that many users want to
use this module.

I think you also know that, because it contains the problem of patent,
I have been removed from the source code in Debian this module.
I do not know whether there is a need to remove the source code, but
think of safety, I am that you do not distribute the source code in
Debian.

  http://www.cs.ubc.ca/~lowe/keypoints/

You can see from the following information about the patent which is for Debian.

That's it basically (except it would be wordpress_3.8+dfsg.orig.tar.xz).
On top of this, there's:
- the new 2014 theme needs to be put in its own binary package
- the old 2012 theme has been removed
- dependencies ought to be updated to account for those default theme
  changes
- debian/missing-sources/ should be updated if needed (see the README in
  that directory)

Bug#734437: init-select: [debconf_rewrite] Debconf templates and debian/control review proposal

2014-01-06 Thread Christian Perrier
Package: init-select
Version: N/A
Severity: normal

Dear Debian maintainer,

Hello,

I just noticed new or modified debconf templates appearing for this
package.

I would like to suggest you to consider calling for debconf templates
review AND translation updates when you introduce new debconf
templates or modify the existing templates in a package or, if you
prefer, to send a call for translations after uploading the first
version that introduces new templates or templates changes.

If you're interested in suggestions for doing this, you can find some
at the end of this bug report.

The debian-l10n-english team will now start a review, on our own
initiative. It will be conducted through this bug report.

Suggestions for future debconf templates review

1) Getting debconf templates reviewed
--

The Debian i18n contributors have developed a set of suggestions for
the writing style of debconf templates, to give them an overall
consistency all around Debian. These writing style suggestions are
explained in the Developers Reference. Lintian also warns about common
writing style concerns.

Maintainers are welcome when they ask for a review of debconf templates
and/or packages descriptions on debian-l10n-engl...@lists.debian.org.
It is of course not needed to wait for someone (such as me right me)
proposing you such a review.

In such situations (whether the review is requested by the maintainer
or proposed by someone else), someone from the debian-l10n-english
team will pick up the review to do, handle it, and finally send you a
bug report with the suggested templates. If you want, you can ask for
being CC'ed to the various discussions when the templates are
reviewed.

2) Call for new translations

As soon as the templates have been reviewed, you can ask Debian
translators for new translations:

Just go to your package's build tree and use:

$ podebconf-report-po --call

This will propose you a generic mail which is to be sent to
debian-i...@lists.debian.org and call for new translations.

This utility will mention existing translations to avoid duplicate
work.

It will also attach the needed material to this mail.

Please also think about giving a deadline to translators. We like
deadlines..:-)

3) Always call for translation updates before uploading
---

(of course only when you change the debconf templates!)

If your package already includes debconf translations (ie *.po files
in debian/po), please consider calling for translation updates if you
happen to change something in the templates...or just in case when you
release a new version.

This is done with the following command:

$ podebconf-report-po

This will build private mails to translators (ie people listed in
"Last-Translator" in the PO files) for translations that are
incomplete. These mails will included the needed PO file for each
translator.

Bug#734171: Network install does not work with I-217V ethernet controller

2014-01-06 Thread Christian PERRIER

Please apply these patches from upstream to add Microsoft Works and XLSX

This adds a new option, master_detach, to allow pppd to detach from
the controlling terminal when it is the multilink bundle master but
its own link has terminated, even if the nodetach option has been
given.

Looks like you want:
my $macro_path = $info->unpacked

> +$macro_path = `find $macro_path -type d -name tmac| tr '\\n'
> ':'`;

If so, we can probably settle this one by quoting the $macro_path
variable in the ``. Otherwise, this is a possible CVE (if $macro_path
is taken from the package, it is a "trivial" matter creating a file/dir
in the package which causes the above line to suffer from shell command
injection).
Maybe use -print0 if tr supports null -> ":", but that is nitpicking.
 Alternatively there is File::Find.

Personally, I am not familiar with the "tmac" files; are they always
expected in a dir called "tmac"? And can they really be anywhere in the
package? Or can we narrow it down to say usr/share/ ?

the apparently fixed-path sqlite3 database. This means
that when a database write is attempted, the daemo dies

because it can't create the journal file.

Perhaps it would be better to keep the sqlite db in /var.

I don't understand that - I still have 3.2 installed on this unstable
(i386) system and can still boot it. How does it go wrong?

I really need to know whether -O1 works for 3.2; I can't just
speculatively change it in a stable update.

In that case, they should be kept in separate Debian source packages.

Make sure that you find the sources for those fonts. The tarball that
you linked to in the message that opened bug #733937 contains only the
.ttf files; it is not immediately clear whether those are the
preferred form for modification of the fonts.

Bug#734425: imlib2-config --libs gives invalid output

2014-01-06 Thread Wookey
Source: imlib2
Version: 1.4.6-1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

Running /usr/bin/imlib2-config --libs gives:
-L/usr/lib/aarch64-linux-gnu -lImlib2 @my_libs@

That @my_libs@ is wrong. And can break builds which use these flags
(such as w3m on arm64, for example). It should have been substituted
with something, but there seems to be nothing in the package to do that
substitution when imlib2-config.in is generated into imlib2-config

I'm not sure what the original idea was, but the @my_libs@ seems to be
redundant now.

The attached patch just removes it so that the package produces a
version of imlib2-config that produces a valid output for --libs

Many devices can generate a wake-up signal after the computer is shut
down (wake on LAN, wake on key, etc.) and this is evidently happening
when it should not. So it is hardware-related but probably caused by a
change in the way a driver prepares the hardware for shutdown.

> happy to try a few things if you point me in the right

[...]

Please try to work out which driver is doing this, by removing a driver
with the 'rmmod' command and then shutting down. I think it is probably
one of:

e1000e
igb
xhci_hcd
ehci-pci

I don't think anyone else has reproduced this problem, so you are the
person in the best place to check that these changes really fix it.

You can test patches against the Debian kernel package by following the

I had another look at the package via the mentors.debian.net page, and I have
a couple of further suggestions.

debian/copyright:

  - change license name ALADDIN to Zlib. The actual license text is identical
and Zlib is a standard short name keyword, while ALADDIN is not. Mainly
I think using the Zlib short name makes it clear that the license is not
new and thus doesn't require investigation, easing the work on the FTP
masters examining the package once it makes it to the NEW queue.

debian/watch:

  - add file to help with QA. I've created one that works, which
contains this:

# Compulsory line, this is a version 3 file
version=3

# Old versions of svxlink took the form of svxlink-090426.tar.gz, but
# newer versions take the form of svxlink-13.12.tar.gz
http://sf.net/svxlink/svxlink-(.+)\.(.+)\.tar\.gz

I've incorporated both of these on the package I've put in my public
repository; the package itself is placed at:

   http://debian-packages.coredump.us/debian/pool/main/s/svxlink/

procedural:

  - make a new upload to mentors.debian.net with these two minor fixes
(using the same version number, AFAIK)

  - send a message to the [debian-hams] mailing list announcing the
availability of the package and seeking sponsorship -- essentially a
duplicate message of the one sent to [debian-mentors]. Although
[debian-hams] is fairly quiet, I still think that's the place giving
the best bet of adopting a ham-related package.

Thanks!

I guess I should ask this more explicitly: what's the plan for handling
upgrades from wheezy? Suppose a user has ruby1.8 installed and is using
it for various things along with packaged Debian modules, say ruby-remctl
(to pick a random example). They then upgrade their system to wheezy.
Ruby 1.8 doesn't upgrade, of course, but neither does it disappear from
the system... but ruby-remctl does upgrade, and then the Ruby modules for
1.8 disappear out from under them without much warning.

Don't we need to handle this in some way?

Bug#734171: Network install does not work with I-217V ethernet controller

2014-01-06 Thread Igor Levicki

Let me first clarify that I wanted to build a production system for
daily use, not an unstable test system where I could risk losing data so
that is why I opted for a stable release.

Since Debian 7.3 was released in December I assumed that it supports
hardware which hit retail in June.

Obviously, I was wrong about it but I couldn't find any detailed
hardware compatibility list to check -- all I found was this:

http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/ch02s01.html.en

It says the following:
2.1.6. Network Connectivity Hardware

_Almost any_ network interface card (NIC) supported by the Linux kernel
should also be supported by the installation system; drivers should
normally be loaded automatically. This includes _most PCI/PCI-Express
cards_ as well as PCMCIA/Express Cards on laptops. Many older ISA cards
are supported as well. [emphasis mine]

So if my assumption was wrong, so it will be everyone else's and you can
only blame your own documentation.

As for your "Windows does it too" remark, in recent Windows (7, 8.1)
there is no such thing as minimal network install ISO so I don't know
why you are bringing it into this discussion, not to mention that your
logic "others fail so it is ok if we fail too" eludes me.

Moreover, I was under impression that we are talking about network
installer ISO here, not about stable distribution kernel.

AFAIK, network installer's job is to get the user into an environment in
which they can install Debian over the network/internet.

In my opinion, there is absolutely no reason or excuse not to have
working network drivers in network installer image.

If you go to:
http://www.debian.org/News/2013/20131214

You will see:
Updated Debian 7: 7.3 released
December 14th, 2013

And if you go to:
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=15817

You will see:
e1000e-2.5.4.tar.gz
Date 09/03/2013

If the date format is m/d/y then that is September 3rd, three months
before your release (the date in readme.txt is July so if we assume that
the date on download page is incorrect, that means 5 months difference).

This driver (like any other Intel network driver) is open-source and it
can be compiled as a stand-alone module against your stable 3.2 kernel
to replace the three years old driver module you have in the network
installer image.

Let me repeat that last part -- "three years old intel network driver
module".

Did you ever think about the scenario where your mainboard fails and you
have to replace it after 3+ years, but you are constrained to a stable
linux distribution by some proprietary application and/or hardware?
How do you install the same stable linux distribution on your new
hardware (because you simply can't buy the same hardware again after so
much time) if distro makers/maintainers won't periodically add drivers
for new hardware to stable images?

Exactly what is preventing you to add new driver module which supports
both old and new hardware?

With Windows you insert a CD from mainboard manufacturer and you install
the network driver. What do you do here, find a Debian machine running
the same kernel version as your network installer and compile the driver
from the source then copy it over?

In my opinion that is not exactly user-friendly even for a geek like me,
but if that is your idea of how things should work don't complain that
nobody takes Linux seriously when it comes to desktop.

And before you say "you should have used Live DVD to check" or "you
should have installed using full install DVD" the answer is -- network
still wouldn't work with either of those, and I would have just wasted
bandwidth and space.

Failure to support common hardware during install together with Debian
maintainer's shameful handling of ffmpeg/libav situation is enough clues
for me to pick up another distro which I just did so I don't really care
if this get fixed or not.

Regards,
Igor

Sorry, that's wrong.

The linux kernel is regularly updated in stable to add support for
new(er) hardware.

Well if 3.2.x updates upstream add new drivers, then sure, but I don't
recall ever seeing debian backport drivers to a stable release kernel.

Really strangely, if the firmware is not found for my card, it isn't
registering the sysctl. Xorg detects this and falls back to a usable
vesa desktop, fixed at 1280x1024 (no xrandr) cloned on both monitors.
kldstat still shows radeonkms as being 'loaded' in this case.

I've broken networking on my test system which complicates testing and I
couldn't save the kernel messages. I remember messages prefixed by
[drm] about loading microcode, specifically by some ni_* functions which
must be specific to my chipset (Radeon HD 6800 - Northern Islands / Barts).

The behaviour I get sounds fine - it gives me something that works, or
otherwise I merely have to copy the non-free firmware modules to the
right place for KMS to work.

It is most interesting that your HD 2400 / RV610 isn't falling back in
the same way as described above.

Bug#734411: apt-listbugs: /usr/lib/ruby/vendor_ruby/debian.rb:24:in `require': no such file to load -- debian_version (LoadError)

2014-01-06 Thread Markus Koschany
Package: apt-listbugs

Severity: grave

Dear maintainer,

after I made a complete dist-upgrade and upgraded apt-listbugs from
0.1.11 to 0.1.12, I tried to install a single package but I got this
error message instead.

/usr/lib/ruby/vendor_ruby/debian.rb:24:in `require': no such file to load --
debian_version (LoadError) from
/usr/lib/ruby/vendor_ruby/debian.rb:24 from
/usr/sbin/apt-listbugs:289:in `require' from
/usr/sbin/apt-listbugs:289 E: Sub-process /usr/sbin/apt-listbugs apt
returned an error code (1) E: Failure running script
/usr/sbin/apt-listbugs apt

So basically installing, upgrading or removing of software and
apt-listbug itself doesn't work anymore (but it did work in the past).
If I comment out

DPkg::Pre-Install-Pkgs {"/usr/sbin/apt-listbugs apt";};

in /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/10apt-listbugs

apt is able to complete the installation process and everything
works fine.

This makes apt-listbugs completely unusable for me at the moment hence
the severity. Please feel free to adjust it or contact me for further
information if needed.

Markus

Hi Dennis,

Sorry, I really don't want to do this. I understand that it will make
your life easier, but it's also likely to make user support much
harder. The existing setup means that people reporting bugs at least
can give us a filename to describe what they're using. With such a
symlink, we're likely to see even more people reporting bugs that we
won't be able to help with... :-/

FYI, this is quite likely.
I'm not allowed to install sid on every host. :-)
At a glance, the versions I'm likely to have been using are

  - whatever testing/unstable had when I reported the problem;
  - 1:1.7.9.5-1; and
  - 1:1.7.0.4-1ubuntu0.2

I run reportbug from a sid host. I usually set --package-version, but
I might have forgotten for this bug (which would cause reportbug to
pick the testing/unstable version).

I'm not worried about this bug, so I won't bother to dig further. :-)

Bug#734407: redeclipse: [l10n] Improving the German translation strings in redeclipse.desktop

Hi!

sorry for this extreme form of nitpicking but otherwise I can't sleep.
;-)

The German translation string in redeclipse.desktop for Red Eclipse is
"Roter Eklipse". It should either be "Rote Eklipse" (it's feminine) or just "Red
Eclipse" because "Red Eclipse" is a proper name.

Bug#734405: seekwatcher won't run at all (ValueError: numpy.dtype does not appear to be the correct type object)

2014-01-06 Thread zerodeux
Package: seekwatcher
Version: 0.12+hg20091016-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Dear Maintainer,

I noticed upon installing 'seekwatcher' from my Jessie that it would not
work. Whatever I throw at it, simple --help, nothing, or complex
options, I get :

$ sudo seekwatcher -t find.trace -o find.svg -p 'find /srv -xdev
>/dev/null' -d /dev/sda7
Traceback (most recent call last):

  File "numpy.pxd", line 43, in seekwatcher.rundata
(seekwatcher/rundata.c:7885)
ValueError: numpy.dtype does not appear to be the correct type object

Since this package uses Cython, I supposed some generated C code was out
of date. I rebuilt the package locally :

$ apt-get source seekwatcher
$ sudo apt-get build-dep seekwatcher
$ cd seekwatcher-*
$ dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -uc -us
$ sudo dpkg -i ../*.deb

And then it just worked :

$ sudo seekwatcher -t find.trace -o find.svg -p 'find /srv -xdev
>/dev/null' -d /dev/sda7
Version 7.000kness 20eader in AFM: UnderlinePosition -133

running :find /srv -xdev >/dev/null:

Total:926373 events (dropped 0),43424 KiB data
done running find /srv -xdev >/dev/null
blktrace done
using tracefile ./find.trace
saving graph to find.svg

May I suggest a simple version bump in order the package is rebuilt ?
That sould fix the problem for everybody.

PS: no, I don't have anything funny in /usr/local, the test was against
vanilla Debian Python in Jessie (2.7).

I've found a workaround for this issue, for both iceweasel and icedove.
Launch the app from a terminal (xterm, etc.), backgrounded, and then dismiss
the terminal. I.e. open a terminal and run "iceweasel &" or "icedove &",
and then "exit". This seems to keep the zombies at bay.

mikmod and modplug123 play the XM files just fine. However, modplugplay does
not:

modplugplay and modplug123 both come from modplug-tools and use libmodplug.
One works, the other does not. So where is the bug?
mikmod does not use libmodplug, and works.

> Other changes might have caused this, e.g. overflow protection now
> enabled for sdl-mixer1.2 getting in the way.

Maybe there is an overflow (how can I find out?) which triggers in
modplugplay and libsdl-mixer, but not in mikmod and modplug123. But why was
this never noticed before?

frozen-bubble has only ogg files no xm, so we can not compare with that.
I downloaded the first free XM mod that I could find:

http://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=134430

And it plays with mikmod and modplug123, but not in modplugplay:
modplugplay boos_lullaby2.xm
/dev/dsp (boos_lullaby2.xm): Device or resource busy

But the other files give the same message:
modplugplay 2force.xm
/dev/dsp (2force.xm): Device or resource busy

I would say something is broken in modplugplay or libmodplug (which
strangely does not trigger in modplug123), a segfault should never happen,
even if there were an "overflow" in the XM file.

So forward the bug to modplug-tools or libmodplug1? Both maintainers are in
Cc, maybe they have an idea.

Christian

How about this? What do you think?

It's a gross hack, but it should work in preventing regressions.

The proper fix (running the actual initialization before sysctl_init) is not
so easy, as the codepaths are too separate (and this separation is even exposed
to userland).

Bug#734403: linux-image-3.12-1-amd64: "shutdown -h now" makes computer restart

2014-01-06 Thread Robert Lemmen
Package: src:linux
Version: 3.12.6-2
Severity: normal

hi there,

the last aptitude upgrade my kernel got updated to 3.12-1-amd64, since
then something very strange happens: when i do a "shutdown -h now", thge
computer shuts down as expected, and all lights and fans go off. but
after a few more seconds, the whole thing restarts itself, a bit of a
zombie moment. I originally expected this to be some bizarre hardware
thing, but then I found a report [0] linking this to the kernel
(different version in their case). I still had linux-image-3.11-2-amd64
installed, so I rebooted into that and retried (a couple of times to
make sure), and i'll be damned but that kernel does the shutdown fine!

I have no clue how all that ACPI or whatever works, bbut something there
isn't ideal. happy to try a few things if you point me in the right
direction

regards robert

Paul, if you don't have an immediate solution to the problem, I will
debug the debian source package. Give me up to 3 days for that.

Bug#734402: lintian: [refining a test] take in account man macros existing in the build tree

2014-01-06 Thread Georges Khaznadar
Package: lintian
Version: 2.5.20
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

Dear Maintainer,
I propose to refine a little the check for warnings in manpages
Here are my replies to the ordinary questions:

   * What led up to the situation?
when I tried to enhance the package tix, lintian complained for every
manpage
because the file tix.tmac could not be found. However the right macro
file
did exist under the debian directory, in a right place for groff.

   * What exactly did you do ?
I patched the current version of lintian to add one feature: searching a
directory
which may contain man macros, and adding an environment variable for the
  test based on "man --warnings"
   * What was the outcome of this action?
When I installed the modified lintian package, the false warnings
disappeared.

I encountered the issue with the capitalisation in joystick 1.4.3, I
tried to report it as a new bug and found this bug already existed.

I fixed the capitalisation with the attached patch after instrumenting

In the patch, I don’t see a Forwarded: header. Has this been forwarded
to upstream? In
https://code.google.com/p/go/source/browse/src/cmd/ld/elf.c, at the time
of writing, I don’t see the changes.

I’m comfortable applying this once it gets applied upstream, but I am a
bit hesitant until then, mostly because I’m not very familiar with ARM
intricacies (even though I use Go on a couple of ARM boxen).

Bug#433270: Trying again to restart the processing package

2014-01-06 Thread Pablo Duboue
Hi David!

Good luck with the packaging. Last week I was using processing for
something and remembered this ITP. I should have dropped it, thanks
for taking it.

I had a working build for processing for a very old version (which was
doing the build as a series of scripts). The newer versions use a much
saner system, so my work is no longer relevant.

If you have something, I can help you test it and if you want to
bounce ideas, I'll be at #debian-java again (I'm DrDub).

Great news!

P.

That’s been a long time without action, so let me try to take over this
ITP. I just joined pkg-java-maintainers@l.a.d.o and debian-java@l.d.o,
hopefully we’ll be able to push it further this time (explicit CC to
everyone who showed interest in this package, in the hope to make the
“we” as less royal as possible).

Hopefully we’ll be able to produce this binary from the same source too.

Regards

David

P.-S.: I intend to take as much as possible from the packaging work
already started by Pablo, and from the processing-core package too.

Bug#733826: [PATCH] xhci: Set scatter-gather limit to avoid failed block writes.

2014-01-06 Thread Sarah Sharp
Dan, can you test this patch, on top of the other patch that Ben sent?
There's directions for building a custom kernel here, if you need it:

http://kernelnewbies.org/KernelBuild

I suggest either getting the Debian kernel source and patching that, or
patching 3.12.6 or later.

Sarah Sharp

8<-->8

Commit 35773dac5f862cb1c82ea151eba3e2f6de51ec3e "usb: xhci: Link TRB
must not occur within a USB payload burst" attempted to fix an issue
found with USB ethernet adapters, and inadvertently broke USB storage
devices. The patch attempts to ensure that transfers never span a
segment, and rejects transfers that have more than 63 entries (or
possibly less, if some entries cross 64KB boundaries).

usb-storage limits the maximum transfer size to 120K, and we had assumed
the block layer would pass a scatter-gather list of 4K entries,
resulting in no more than 31 sglist entries:

http://marc.info/?l=linux-usb&m=138498190419312&w=2

That assumption was wrong, since we've seen the driver reject a write
that was 218 sectors long (of probably 512 bytes each):

Jan 1 07:04:49 jidanni5 kernel: [ 559.624704] xhci_hcd :00:14.0: Too many
fragments 79, max 63
...
Jan 1 07:04:58 jidanni5 kernel: [ 568.622583] Write(10): 2a 00 00 06 85 0e 00
00 da 00

Limit the number of scatter-gather entries to half a ring segment. That
should be margin enough in case some entries cross 64KB boundaries.
Increase the number of TRBs per segment from 64 to 256, which should
result in ring segments fitting on a 4K page.

In http://bugs.debian.org/727708#2160, I realized that libsystemd-daemon
is not actually available on non-linux, even though it can be compiled
and all its code turns into a noop.

The reason for this is the build system in the first place. A number of
non-optional dependencies are linux-only (e.g. libcap) and thus a number
of changes are necessary to the autotools config files. I am not sure if
those changes would be accepted upstream, and certainly there is
potential for them to break given that not many people compile the code
on non-linux (only Debian AFAIK).

One possibility suggested by Tollef is to have a separate Makefile just
for src/libsystemd-daemon/, but then we don’t get all the global flags
with which the systemd source is compiled. This may or may not be a
deal-breaker, given that all the code turns into a nop anyway.

The current (204-6) compiler invocation on Linux for libsystemd-daemon
is:

./libtool --tag=CC --mode=link gcc -std=gnu99 -pipe -Wall -Wextra
-Wno-inline -Wundef -Wformat=2 -Wformat-security -Wformat-nonliteral
-Wlogical-op -Wsign-compare -Wmissing-include-dirs
-Wold-style-definition -Wpointer-arith -Winit-self
-Wdeclaration-after-statement -Wfloat-equal -Wmissing-prototypes
-Wstrict-prototypes -Wredundant-decls -Wmissing-declarations
-Wmissing-noreturn -Wshadow -Wendif-labels -Wcast-align
-Wstrict-aliasing=2 -Wwrite-strings -Wno-long-long
-Wno-overlength-strings -Wno-unused-parameter
-Wno-missing-field-initializers -Wno-unused-result -Werror=overflow
-ffast-math -fno-common -fdiagnostics-show-option -fno-strict-aliasing
-fvisibility=hidden -ffunction-sections -fdata-sections
-fstack-protector --param=ssp-buffer-size=4 -fvisibility=hidden
-DSD_EXPORT_SYMBOLS -g -O2 -fstack-protector --param=ssp-buffer-size=4
-Wformat -Werror=format-security -Wl,--as-needed -Wl,--no-undefined
-Wl,--gc-sections -Wl,-z,relro -Wl,-z,now -version-info 0:10:0
-Wl,--version-script=../src/libsystemd-daemon/libsystemd-daemon.sym
-Wl,-z,relro -o libsystemd-daemon.la -rpath /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu
src/libsystemd-daemon/libsystemd_daemon_la-sd-daemon.lo -ldl -lrt

Maybe there is a way to have a standalone Makefile that is used on
non-Linux, which contains the compiler invocation that is used on Linux
and is updated by the Debian developer who uploads the package. It’s not
a very beautiful solution, but it is as close to the Linux compilation
as possible.

Bug#722980: Status of ruby1.8 removal transition?

2014-01-06 Thread Russ Allbery
I maintain a package (remctl) that builds, among other things, a Ruby
extension. I noticed that it showed up as affected by the upcoming
ruby1.8-removal transition, and I think this may be the relevant bug. (At
least, it's the only open bug that looks relevant.)

On my next package upload, should I just drop Ruby 1.8? I can easily do
that, but I wasn't sure if we were at the point where that was now
desirable, or if the upgrade path for Ruby 1.8 users had been worked out
and had any implications for how I should handle matters in my package.
(Breaks or whatnot, etc.)

For now, I'm continuing to build 1.8 and 1.9.1 modules, but I can quickly
change that as soon as I know what to do.

(Due to the nature of this source package, it handles which Ruby versions
to build for itself, so it requires some minor source changes to fiddle
with the supported version list.)

I can confirm that I am seeing the same behaviour with these two
files; each of them is visible fine on their own, but this procedure
crashes xdvi. The backtrace at the terminal is:

The next upload will contain MIME registrations based on VLC's.

What's wrong with Replaces: ? I proposed this in my last mail, but it
went unanswered:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=726248#105

I really don't see why you want us to remove legacy functionality from
k-k-h. As far as I can see its presence doesn't stop you from providing
an alternative and making other packages Build-Depend on it.

As for the dtrace userland, we don't have it yet, but we're much closer.
There's a ctfutils package, and latest versions of the kernel are built
with CTF debug information and dtrace support now.

I think that eventually we can have both implementations of SDT probes.
Systemtap obviously has better integration with the GNU toolchain but
DTrace will most likely have better kernel integration for us. I think
there's room for both options and I think it's great to have this choice.
So why remove the BSD version of ? Better to provide users
with two great tools than just one, don't you think?
