Bug#744833: libfl-dev and flex-old: error when trying to install together

2014-04-14 Thread Ralf Treinen
Package: flex-old,libfl-dev
Version: flex-old/2.5.4a-10
Version: libfl-dev/2.5.39-1
Severity: serious

Distribution: sid

Hi,

automatic installation tests of packages that share a file and at the
same time do not conflict by their package dependency relationships has
detected the following problem:

Selecting previously unselected package libfl-dev:amd64.
(Reading database ... 10937 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to unpack .../libfl-dev_2.5.39-1_amd64.deb ...
Unpacking libfl-dev:amd64 (2.5.39-1) ...

Errors were encountered while processing:
 /var/cache/apt/archives/flex-old_2.5.4a-10_amd64.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

This is a serious bug as it makes installation fail, and violates
sections 7.6.1 and 10.1 of the policy. An optimal solution would
consist in only one of the packages installing that file, and renaming
or removing the file in the other package. Depending on the
circumstances you might also consider Replace relations or file
diversions. If the conflicting situation cannot be resolved then, as a
last resort, the two packages have to declare a mutual
Conflict. Please take into account that Replaces, Conflicts and
diversions should only be used when packages provide different
implementations for the same functionality.

Here is a list of files that are known to be shared by both packages
(according to the Contents file for sid/amd64, which may be
slightly out of sync):

  /usr/include/FlexLexer.h

This bug has been filed against both packages. If you, the maintainers of
the two packages in question, have agreed on which of the packages will
resolve the problem please reassign the bug to that package. You may then
also register in the BTS that the other package is affected by the bug.

-Ralf.

of this kind see http://edos.debian.net/file-overwrites/.

Bug#744832: strongswan-charon: should depend on iproute2 instead of iproute

Dear Maintainer,

strongswan-charon depends on iproute, but now (at least at 20140415) iproute is
a transitional dummy package of iproute2.

I attached a patch to debian/control to reflect this, but "iproute2 | iproute"
dependency may be better.

Bug#744382: [Ceph-maintainers] Bug#744382: librbd-dev and librados-dev does not provide correct shlibs/symbols file

I only meant that different versions of cluster components (in my short
experience with 0.72.2 and 0.78) do not work well with each other.
Having said that `qemu-img` linked with "librbd-0.72.2" worked well with
cluster 0.72.2 and with 0.78 (unless there are some subtle bugs that I didn't
notice).

I see your point. Indeed .symbols approach to linking is more flexible.

However I believe that `makeshlibs -V' is the safest and most conservative way
to ensure that application will always require at least the very version of
the library it was build with (and not earlier). Basically I have two
arguments for this: easier maintenance (here my only concerns are C++ symbols
as maintaining C symbols is easy) and run-time safety. To my taste there were
way too many bugs in 0.72.2 to use it with confidence. Even if combination of
client librbd/librados-0.72.2 libraries *may* work with newer cluster just
fine, I'd rather not take any chances and force upgrading all client libraries
just to be safe even if it may be unnecessary.

I'm sure some time later symbols will work just fine to allow linking with
older client libraries.
I'm already gaining more confidence with 0.79 than I ever had with 0.72.2 so I
hope we will start using symbols soon if it won't cause any build problems in
"experimental".

Thank you very much for reassuring me with the chosen strategy.
By the way today I've made another commit to "experimental" branch to update
symbols files with data from 0.72.2. I doubt if including older symbols would
be necessary...

 May you give me some pointers? Does it segfault even if executed
without arguments? What happens if you just rebuild it with the
DEB_BUILD_MAINT_OPTIONS intact?
Can you test the package on other x86 machine without PAE?

No, this is not about mixed-cluster issue (to be fair I'm not really sure
what you're talking about, but I _think_ you're referring to a situation
when different parts of the cluster is using different versions of the
software).

This is about build-time vs run-time version/interface difference in 3rd
party software.

The bug in question is debian-specific but it shows a more deep issue
within the mentioned libraries, which you confirm below. When building
everything from source on target machines, the problem does not exist.
The problem comes when you build different system components on different
machines or at different time, and run a combination of all this, again,
on different machines. I mean not that different parts of ceph software/
stack have different versions, but when you build a 3rd party software
using one version of rbd.h/librbd.so, but run it against a system-
installed librbd.so.1 from different build of librbd.

In this situation, a distribution needs to ensure the runtime librbd.so.1
has the right ABI. ABI does not change _that_ often, and it is quite
normal when an app which was built against, say, 0.79 version of librbd.so,
can happily work with librbd.so.1 version 0.72 (when it actually does NOT
use any symbols which are present in 0.79 but didn't exist in 0.72).

So when a 3rd party app actually uses such symbols which are present in
0.79 but not present in earlier versions, a distribution should include
metadata for this 3rd party application that it needs librbd.so.1 AT
LEAST of version 0.79, to satisfy library symbol (and hopefully ABI)
requiriments.

When we may have a situation when an app is built against a more recent
version but is run against an older version of a library? For example,
most distributions have some "unstable" branch where all new most
current versions of all software are uploaded to. On the other hand,
users may run stable branches with older versions of everything. And
imagine a ceph cluster running with a 0.72 version, and the user wants
to try qemu (3rd party app) from unstable branch, because their "stable"
qemu has a bug with their guest OS. The easiest way here is just to
install qemu from unstable branch. With all the rest of the cluster
still running the same 0.72 version, without mixed-cluster issues.

So we need a mechanism to tell the package management system the minimum
version of a library an app requires. For this, we need a .symbols
file with a list of all exported symbols together with library version
at which they first appeared. And this is what this whole talk is
about, nothing more.

One possible way here, as suggested by Dmitry, is to record the build
version of the library as minimum required for the app linked to it
(dh_makeshlibs -V does just that). This way, qemu built against 0.72
version of librbd will require librbd >= 0.72 according to package
manager metadata, even if it actually uses only symbols introduced
in 0.44 version of librbd and before.

This approach works, but, as you've shown below, not for ceph, because
ceph does not tolerate mixed-cluster, so once you update any 3rd party,
not cluster-related but cluster-used, software, you'll have to upgrade
whole cluster too, because according to the package manager, you'll
have to update - in this case - librbd to the latest, which will most
likely require updating whole ceph stack on one node, which ofcourse
requires upgrading ceph stack on other nodes as well.

Dmitry: this is a good example of why naive `makeshlibs -V' approach
sometimes should NOT be used...

This is add, since red_dispatcher_add_memslot is doing

dispatcher_send_message(&dispatcher->dispatcher,

but dispatcher_send_message() is getting dispatcher=0x88. So how did

gnutls has already (libgnutls28-dev) switched away from libgcrypt
entirely, so this is no longer a problem, except then you get a
new mess.

Bug#694308: Relicensing tracked on bug #665334

2014-04-14 Thread Samuel Bronson
Control: block -1 by 665334

The request that Adobe relicense this code is being tracked on
; according to
, the relicensing should be done
by August.

Of course, it still won't be safe to actually modify this code
(implementations depend on this exact code being used), so the most
meaningful change will be that it will actually be legal to use it in
fonts derived from Adobe's open source typefaces.

Bug#744828: systemd-cron not running cron jobs.

2014-04-14 Thread Dean Loros
Package: systemd-cron
Version: 1.1.1-1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?
I had install systemd back in mid-Feb--had not checked logs until last week. I
found that cron jobs were not being run.
   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
I manually installed the newer systemd-cron package from upstream (1.21) &
corrected it to work with my system. This started to make cron jobs work. My
logs indicated that "/user/bin/run-parts" were not found, so jobs were not
run.
I then created a link from /bin/run-parts to /usr/bin/run-parts which was the
final piece of the puzzle.
   * What was the outcome of this action?
Cron jobs are now running normally.
   * What outcome did you expect instead?
Expected version 1.1.1-1 to run cron jobs normally.

I can be contacted to show what I did to make the cron.target(s) run - the
changes were very minimal.

I run a sid system & pull from experimental were it looks like it would be
helpful.

Bug#744827: wheezy-pu: glark/1.8.0-1.1~deb7u1 (RC bug fix)

Hi,

to also address RC bug http://bugs.debian.org/724768 in stable, I'd
upload my NMU 1.8.0-1.1 also to stable-proposed-updates as
1.8.0-1.1~deb7u1. (Cc'ing glark's maintainer.)

Since the patch and changelog entry are exactly the same as already
uploaded to unstable I decided to include the according changelog entry
completely and adding a new entry for the upload instead of using the
same changelog entry, just with a different version and target
distribution.

Please tell me if it's ok to upload this to stable-proposed-updates. If
the version number and the changelog entries are not ok, please advise
me what way is preferred.

I find it convenient and rather helpful to display Ubuntu-specific
data about my packages on UDD and other similar resources (PTS/DDPO),
and I'd rather not see this feature outright removed. I have no
objections with making UDD more configurable and allowing the
maintainer to choose to show/hide sections of it, however.

I think it's somewhat absurd to say that including links to the same
set of source packages on Launchpad and its bug tracker constitutes a
violation of SPI's non-profit status...

Vincent

Makes sense. I'll upload that soonish.

This, however, I won't incorporate. I don't see any benefit to moving the
macros, and it makes the 16k-line patch completely unreviewable by eye to find
the four lines that matter for the change. If there's a technical improvement
that I'm missing, please let me know.

Thanks for the report.

It goes to the question of whether providing desktop files are some
version of "should." It wasn't clear to me whether we had consensus on
that part. Bill proposed a patch that added just that part, presumably in
an attempt to test consensus on that bit, and so far I'm the only
seconder.

Bug#354742: gweather: Locations.xml is huge

2014-04-14 Thread Stéphane Aulery
Simos Xenitellis summarized the response of upstream developers and why
this request is not a good idea:

When I use the term "strip", I mean similar to "man 1 strip". You
would perform a "strip" to a PO file which would remove messages when
msgid==msgstr, then compile to MO files in order to create the package.
With the LINGUAS environment variable, you specify which translations to
include or not.

I try to summarize what we have up to now,

1. The "optimization" we talk about is to strip messages when
msgid==msgstr, when compiling PO files.

2. One would (if they chose to) only perform the optimization when
building packages for their distribution. No translation files change
within GNOME.

3. The default behavior of the GNOME building tools would not change;
one would have to use some special parameter to strip MO files (either a
subset or all).

4. The distribution must declare to their users that they support a
single language at a time, (with the implicit/explicit fallback to
English (en_US)). The UI should not permit the user to set the LANGUAGE
variable to a sequence such as es:fr:de:en.

5. One would start considering all these if they have the burning need
to reduce space (for example, to fit packages on a single CDROM, or
install on some small device that space is at a premium). Or, when RAM
is really at a premium.

One would consider "stripping" translation files if *all 5 items* apply.

If we consider all this concept of "stripping" translation files is a
big no-no, then this report should close (maybe INVALID?).

If we consider that someone in the future would need to come back here,
we could leave it, marked as enhancement or something.

If there is something else I miss from this comment entry, please say so.

Yeah, it never fails, but it has its own downside which I mentioned
above.

Thank you for all your comments. I'm with you, I understand how useful
.symbols could be for linking (if done properly).

Specifically in regards to Ceph for a moment I feel much more comfortable with
"dh_makeshlibs -V" not only due to lack of confidence in C++ symbols approach
but mostly because of rapid upstream development. The amount of changes
between 0.72.2 and 0.79 is huge. I would feel quite uncomfortable if "qemu"
would be built successfully with 0.79 but wouldn't pull newer libraries when
used with 0.72.2... For example Ceph cluster has to be completely upgraded to
0.79 as it just doesn't work with mix of 0.72.2 and 0.79 components (i.e.
OSD,MON,MDS)...

As a ceph developer, the mixed-cluster issue is a bug (possibly fixed
already since 0.79 is undergoing heavy testing and fixes before the
next long term stable release, 0.80, is out). If you have more details
we'd be happy to hear about them.

Regarding library symbols, the ceph libraries each have C++ as well as
C interfaces, and there's been some suggestions to move to
visibility=hidden by default, to avoid some of the hairier problems
with C++ libraries [1]. It seems like this would make .symbols files
approach more tenable, since passing through all C++ symbols would

not be as bad if only the desired ones are exported in the first place.
This isn't done yet, but in the mean time the "dh_makeshlibs -V"
approach seems fine to me.

If there's anything we could do upstream to make this easier, let us know.

Thanks!
Josh

Yes, at the moment I'm busy and cannot work on this (I might in the next
two weeks though). And unfortunately I'm the only "active" maintainer in
the team.

Updating the user-mode-linux package is just a matter of setting the
correct version in debian/{rules,control}, updating the kernel
configuration (there are debian/rules targets to help with that -
oldconfig{32,64} - policy is M for everything) and building the package.
If there are no major issues, this is it.

Let me know if you can help. Else I can try towards the weekend.

Thanks

Aven works fine for me, so "a bug which has a major effect on the
usability of a package, without rendering it completely unusable to
everyone" seems more appropriate.

Since it works for me and therion does the same (#744793), I suspect
it's an issue with your OpenGL setup. Were either aven or therion's
viewer working on this machine in a previous version?

Can you try installing "mesa-utils" and seeing if "glxgears" works?
This is a simple opengl demo program, which should display a 3D
animation of some rotating cogs. If that fails, the problem isn't with
aven or therion, but at a lower level.

Cheers,
Olly

Bug#744817: clang-3.5: scan-build: insecure use of /tmp

2014-04-14 Thread Jakub Wilk

Package: clang-3.5
Version: 1:3.5~svn201651-1
Severity: important
Tags: security

The GetHTMLRunDir subroutine creates temporary directories in an
insecure way:

1) The directory name is easily predictable:

 if (!defined $Dir) {
   $Dir = $ENV{'TMPDIR'} || $ENV{'TEMP'} || $ENV{'TMP'} || "/tmp";
   $TmpMode = 1;
 }
 # [...]
 my $TimeString = sprintf("%02d%02d%02d", $hour, $min, $sec);
 my $DateString = sprintf("%d-%02d-%02d-%s-$$",
  $year, $month, $day, $TimeString);
 # [...]
 if ($TmpMode) {
   $NewDir = "$Dir/$Prog-$DateString-$RunNumber";
 }

2) The directory is created with default permissions (instead of 0700).

3) The function doesn't fail if the directory already exists, even if
it's owned by another user. Now, the upstream intention was to always
choose a directory that doesn't exist, but the logic is broken:

   foreach my $f (@FILES) {
 # Strip the prefix '$Prog-' if we are dumping files to /tmp.
 if ($TmpMode) {
   next if (!($f =~ /^$Prog-(.+)/));
   $f = $1;
 }
 my @x = split/-/, $f;
 next if (scalar(@x) != 4);
 next if ($x[0] != $year);
 next if ($x[1] != $month);
 next if ($x[2] != $day);
 next if ($x[3] != $TimeString);
 next if ($x[4] != $$);
 if ($x[5] > $max) {
   $max = $x[5];
 }
   }
   $RunNumber = $max + 1;

But, for files that could be created by GetHTMLRunDir, scalar(@x) is 6,
not 4, so the loop is mostly no-op. (Even if the loop was implemented
correctly, there would still be race window between when the directory
name is chosen and when it is created.)

This bug can be exploited by malicious local user for denial of service,
information disclosure, or to overwrite arbitrary files via symlink
attack.

Hi,

I'm investigating this since I did the last groovy upload to unstable

Gradle is also broken (#744337) probably due to the same reason.

Just a reminder: remember to CC 744...@bugs.debian.org concerning this bug.

Okay. It looks like you're using Testing but have not included the Wheezy
(i.e. stable) repo; I've heard that that can cause some unusual bugs since
there are a few packages that only exist in Stable. Also since you've got a
foreign architecture available (i386), double-check that you've got the amd64
mumble package loaded, not the i386 package.

I have an amd64 Debian Testing VM loaded, and just tested mumble
1.2.5-245-g221a5d7-1 in XFCE and was able to change the push-to-talk key.
I'm not able to make anything of the gdb output you included either, sorry to
say.

So the best suggestion I've got for starters is to add the Debian wheezy repo
and apt-get update + upgrade to see if that pulls in any missing packages.

Bug#744814: Changed plugin path breaks NM integration

2014-04-14 Thread Michael Biebl
Package: ppp
Version: 2.4.6

ppp 2.4.6 has changed its plugin path to /usr/lib/pppd/2.4.6.

There are a few packages which install plugins into /usr/lib/pppd/2.4.5:

network-manager: /usr/lib/pppd/2.4.5/nm-pppd-plugin.so
network-manager-pptp: /usr/lib/pppd/2.4.5/nm-pptp-pppd-plugin.so
pppdcapiplugin: /usr/lib/pppd/2.4.5/capiplugin.so
pppdcapiplugin: /usr/lib/pppd/2.4.5/userpass.so

network-manager-pptp (and pppdcapiplugin) has a versioned depends on
ppp (>= 2.4.5) && ppp (<< 2.4.6).

Unfortunately, since network-manager only has a recommends on ppp, it
can't ensure such a strict versioned dependency.

Please consider adding a Breaks: network-manager (<< 0.9.8.8-7).

I'll update NM accordingly.

Hello Nicolas,
thanks for your bug report, which, however, really looks like
an already known issue of the "ruby" package.

I am thus reassigning and merging your report.

I think you should be able to solve the issue by installing
ruby/1:2.0.0.2
(currently in unstable, expected to migrate to testing soon).

Please let me know, in case this fails.
Bye.

I agree. I don't want to add a debconf prompt for this. Aside from the
overhead, this just shifts the problem to the user.

Fwiw, I wouldn't mind to unconditionally rm the file on purge in postrm
(we do the same for dbus wrt /var/lib/dbus/machine-id) given that no
other package relies on the file.

That said, I don't know if any other package relies on /etc/machine-id.
I do know that dbus makes use of it but I dunno all the details
regarding the /var/lib/dbus/machine-id fallback

Say we first install systemd, which generates /etc/machine-id, then
later dbus. Will in this case a /var/lib/dbus/machine-id file be created
or will dbus use /etc/machine-id?
In this case we can't remove /etc/machine-id again, as it would break
dbus, unless dbus would on-the-fly generate a /var/lib/dbus/machine-id
if no /etc/machine-id is available.

Maybe Simon knows more.

Regards,
Michael

Bug#740543: RFS: eggdrop/1.6.21-1 [ITA #698272]

2014-04-14 Thread Cédric Barboiron
Hi Vincent and Markus,

Thanks for your comments on the package.

I've updated the package with copyright information for
- src/compat/gnu_strftime.c (LGPL-2+)
- src/compat/inet_aton.c (GPL-2+ and BSD-4-clause and BSD-3-clause, with
comment for the University of California BSD-4-clause portion)

As well as the following files (different authors):
- src/match.c (public domain)
- src/compat/snprintf.c (GPL-2+)
- src/md5/md5c.c (public domain)
- scripts/dccwhois.tcl (GPL-2+)

Finally, I've excluded the only two files with no license information
from the package : scripts/autobotchk and scripts/sentinel.tcl

You can find the updated package at the same place
http://mentors.debian.net/package/eggdrop
http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/e/eggdrop/eggdrop_1.6.21-1.dsc

A quick note on the remaining open bugs:
- #282437 wasn't able to reproduce (but since it is almost 10 years
  old...)
- #596641 the UTF-8 patch indeed is simple, but it is labeled as "I want
  Eggdrop to speak and understand UTF-8. I want it so badly that I'm
  willing to take the ugliest hack available!" on
  http://eggwiki.org/Main_Page . It comes from
  http://forum.egghelp.org/viewtopic.php?p=82111#82111 , with the
  following comment : "BE AWARE: This patch FORCES UTF-8 support, so
  only apply it if your system supports it :) [This patch overrides
  eggdrops own mechanism to detect the encoding system it should use
  based on variables (LC_ALL,...). So this is totally a HACK and
  nothing to put into production code for compatibility reasons]"
- #374568 for the same reasons as

Right, s390x fails differently, and some architectures are still
missing (mips and armhf) ...

From a Debian point of view, I'm less worried about sparc, since it
will probably go away as a release architecture (and sparc-only
failures are not uncommon).

Enabling verbose tests is no problem; not sure if/how we can get a
stack trace out of a package build. I'm cc'ing the Debian bug report
for insights.

I've RFA'd them; I'm still the maintainer.

Sounds great.

I recalled that nyancat-server was a symlink just for reconf-inetd, so you can
stop shipping it. If you also stop shipping the reconf-inet fragments, then
reconf-inetd will remove its inetd.conf entries upon upgrading to the new
package (via a dpkg trigger, ie. you don't need to call anything on postinst,
in fact you should drop postinst altogether).

Here's a tested patch (not including dropping the postinst file, which is a
no-op for upgrading from wheezy onwards):

Bug#744802: ucblogo: keyp doesn't work because of wrong ioctl argument type

2014-04-14 Thread Panu Kalliokoski
Package: ucblogo
Version: 5.5-2.1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch upstream

Sometimes keyp returns true even if there's no input waiting:
Welcome to Berkeley Logo version 5.5
? pr keyp
true

This seems to be due to the fact that in lkeyp, nc is declared to be a
long, but ioctl(stdin, FIONREAD, &nc) only writes an int to nc. Thus,
if the upper half happens to contain crap, nc stays non-zero on 64-bit
architectures.

Here is the patch to fix this particular problem:

Bug#744800: double posts comments

Package: pumpa

pumpa sometimes double-posts comments. I'm using an identi.ca account.
I have mostly seen this on dialup, but just observed it while on
broadband. Clicked post and the dialog box wet away and came back less
than 1 second later. Reloaded the timeline on a whim and saw my comment
had gotten through, so posting again would have been a double post.

I assume this is a protocol error, such as the server accepting the
submissing, but hanging up before it tells the client it went through.

OK, sounds good.

Kurt, if the openssl patch is like [1], it would require that apache2
is built against the updated version of openssl, due to the changed
value of SSL_OP_ALL. Can you please ping me when you have uploaded the
new package? Also, you should probably mention in the changelog that
only recompiled applications get to use the workaround.

Cheers,

Dear Maintainer,

remove "export DEB_BUILD_MAINT_OPTIONS = hardening=+all" from
debian/rules and rebuild it, but I have to admit I don't really
understand what that does.

Bug#744774: fail2ban recidive no longer sends lines matching IP in fail2ban.log

2014-04-14 Thread Yaroslav Halchenko

Thank you James,

I thought that it might be better just to use

'[^0-9]\([^0-9]\|$\)'

to avoid requiring having egrep (not sure if all other distros/osx would
have it)
