Bug#448384: closed by Brice Goglin (Re: Bug#448384: Which opengl driver)
Dear Brice, Apologies for for not replying sooner. After the fan stopped working for a while under linux (they changed the kernel drivers, sadly) my ibook died and has had to be replaced with an intel based macbook. My thanks for all your help over the years, and to Michel Dänzer, too. After rebooting the system we have the same bug/freeze again. I have attached my xorg.conf. Any other files/logs that you want, let me know. Bug#546575: bash: system completely unusable after upgrade
Package: bash Version: 4.0.6 I am really uncertain of who to contact or where to start on this one. The problem seems to be with the PATH variable, which was, I think, wiped out by an install script. All of my non-user users (if you know what I mean, i.e. nobody, root and so on) cannot get at important packages. For example, at startup, I get "cannot execute /etc/init.d/rcS". So the start up scripts to launch the console don't work. Then, of course, I cannot launch X11, as it says that xinit cannot find the files in /etx/X11 and so on. I think that I am going to have to rebuild permissions and path by hand, but I really, really meed some help on where to go. If I log in as a user normal console programmes in /usr/bin and the like still run. I am using the powerpc version of sid on an ibook. Sorry that I can't provide more version information. I am using another machine as mine is, as I say, completely unusable. Help! Adam Bartley

Bug#523453: libgl1-mesa-dri: mesa and compiz interaction
Dear Brice, Good news about compiz, thank you. Reading around the web led me to go looking at whether AIGLX had loaded properly. This is what I got: (**) Option "AIGLX" "true" (**) AIGLX enabled (EE) AIGLX error: dlopen of /usr/lib/dri/r200_dri.so failed (/usr/lib/dri/r200_dri.so: undefined symbol: _glapi_tls_Context) (EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering This would hopefully point to the problem? Thanks for the tip re: glxgears. On a more 'real' note, openarena performs somewhat better on levels where a lot of rendering to inifinty (such as 'space' based levels) is involved. The xersver-xorg-core is version 1.4, so I'll try the one you suggest and see if that doesn't clear up the problem. Package: libgl1-mesa-dri Version: 7.4-2 Severity: normal *** Please type your report below this line *** I got this newest version this morning. Firstly, my compliments to the developers. GLXgears performance jumped from around 800 to around 1200 frames per second! However, it has trashed compiz on powerpc/radeon (r200/9200). I get the dreaded white screen and have had to disable compiz completely. There is a newer version of compiz (0.8.2-2), but it has for some reason only been released to amd64, and the developer gave me an earful when I asked why it had not been passed on to other architectures, saying that it was up to the build system. Clearly something has gone wrong with this, as this has not happened over a month later. I have EXA enabled instead of XAA in my xorg.conf. I would suggest this, then - the interaction of xorg 7.4 and its acceleration architecture has broken compiz, but this may not be the case with the newest version of compiz. Until the developer and the build team talk to each otehr and sort this out we will never know. Good thing it doesn't make my system unusable, just ugly. Bug#520501: More Information
Forcing the mounting of a volume with a command such as "mount /dev/hdc" will cause a cd to mount at the same sort of mount point as gnome will normally use. The same can be achieved with a usb stick at /dev/sda or what have you, so the underlying mechanism still works fine, it is the automatic mounting (which is still checked in the control panel) that is broken. Bug#423865: Gnash powerpc still a goner for youtube.
Dear Didier, The situation is a little different with 0.8.3. I now get the video appearing. It plays one or two frames then freezes and will go no further. If I try another video, it does the same. So, interestingly, it works up to a point and then something stops the process. If there is any sort of system log you would like, let me know. I have the latest version out of the unstable branch on powerpc (0.8.2-2 +b1) and youtube is still broken. Interestingly, the plugin player for totem works fine. Installing gdm works, so the problem is definitely related to launching from the console with startx. As I do a significant part of may work under console only, it would help very much to fix this. With best wishes, Adam Bartley

You're a genius. Gnome 2.20 had somehow switched out of the compositing cursor, which was probaly why I had suddenly noticed the change. When I changed to an argb compositing one - problem solved. Ok, I can see why that is good coding practice on one level, but on the other hand a piece of code has been out in January 2008 which had been shown to be faulty months before in 2007. I noticed on the freedesktop.org bugerport that a fix for this problem was *not* going to be released. is this true? I am not the world's most confident builder/compiler, and don't fancy trying to build these packages from source, after patching same, if help is around the corner. Regards, Adam Bartley

Package: gnome-session Version: 2.20.1-1 Severity: normal *** Please type your report below this line *** This occurs on an ibook G4, 1.2 Ghx with the Radeon 9200 for graphics. Bug#444034: Subject: /usr/bin/pdftex: index formatting broken
Dear Ralph, Norbert, I prepared a sample of the text for you guys today, compiled it, it worked. (!) Went back to the main bookk text, compiled it again, it worked. (!!) I am pleased to say (since it involves no work on your parts) that I seem to have been making some sort of systematic error in the compilation process which I have not been able to recreate. (Have just spent half an hour trying to get it to do it again - no joy.) Bug#444034: Subject: /usr/bin/pdftex: index formatting broken
Package: texlive-base-bin Version: 2007-14 Severity: normal File: /usr/bin/pdftex *** Please type your report below this line *** When running makeindex, formatted entries for the index (emphasised in this case) that previously compiled correctly now print in the index with the formatting code instead. As an example, [EMAIL PROTECTED] now produces an index entry that says "[EMAIL PROTECTED]", rather than an italicised version of the word "Odyssey". If this is just something that now needs to be protected in some way, it would be useful to know, but it is a definite change in behaviour from all previous versions (and is stopping me from completing my book). With best wishes, Adam Bartley -- Package-specific info: If you report an error when running one of the TeX-related binaries (latex, pdftex, metafont,...), or if the bug is related to bad or wrong output, please include a MINIMAL example input file that produces the error in your report. Bug#435286: udev broken *again* for initrd kernels on powerpc
Ok, I ran apt-get under console, so I did see it rebuild initramfs, which twigged me to what the problem might be. When I say no devices work I mean that no external drives mount, no printers are recognised, wireless card is dead. Nothing. So no userland devices, is I guess my point. Let me know what to do re: /etc/udev and I'll give it a shot. Bug#435286: udev broken *again* for initrd kernels on powerpc
Dear Marco, Thanks for the quick response. Further experimentation has shown that I can get into my system with an old 2.6.16 kernel that I have on there, but that no devices work other than the internal drives - such as when I try to start a network device. I dual boot, so maybe if you can tell me what a useful logfile might be for you, I may be able to mount the partition under macos and send it on. Bug#435286: udev broken *again* for initrd kernels on powerpc
Package: udev Version: 0.113-2 Severity: grave Installed new version this morning (30/7/07). First hint that something was wrong was that my external usb hard-drive would not mount. Now it has become clear that my system will not boot at all and is unusable. It gets to a point where it wants to load the root file system and just chokes and stops working. So it is safe to say that *no* devices whatsoever are being loaded by the new udev. My kernel is an initrd 2.6.21 for powerpc. The system is a 1.2 ghz ibook. If you suggest a fix, I would welcome advice on how to get my system going to install the fix at all. Adam Bartley

Package: libgl1-mesa-dri Version: 6.4.2-1 This seems to be another of the packages broken by the powerpc udev update released today. I say that as it insists that it can't find agpgart in the log file, and glxgears runs normally for about three seconds and then locks up suggesting that a buffer gets filled somehwere and then it dies. I'm no expert - just trying to describe the behaviour. Udev also seems to have broken pbbuttonsd - but maybe unrelated? I get a mess of unhappy messages about things that udev can't find when the system boots. (Though they are not there when I do dmesg? Strange!) Would be grateful if you can fix this one.
