Bug#814056: android-tools-fastboot: fastboot fails to detect Intel device (Asus ZenPad S 8 Z580CA)

2016-02-07 Thread Alberto Marmodoro
Package: android-tools-fastboot
Version: 4.2.2+git20130529-5.1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,
The version of 'fastboot' provided within this Debian package fails to detect a
tablet powered by an Intel Z3560 Atom SoC.

Having enabled 'Developer mode' and 'USB debugging' on the device, 'lsusb'
shows it correctly and 'adb' also operates without problems.
In particular, it can reboot it into 'bootloader mode' via:

# adb reboot bootloader

but after the device has rebooted into DroidBoot, 'lsusb' continues to see
it; but

# fastboot devices

returns nothing.

Please consider the relevant discussion i.e. here:
http://android.stackexchange.com/questions/102897/fastboot-devices-returns-nothing
or:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/development/intel-android-devices-root-temp-cwm-t2975096

This does not appear to be a permissions issue. Upon recompiling the 'fastboot'
binary as discussed here:
https://software.intel.com/en-us/forums/android-applications-on-intel-architecture/topic/494961
(scroll down to T K. post, Wed, 11/12/2014 - 17:27), the confirmed working
solution across a variety of Intel devices
(http://forum.xda-developers.com/dell-venue/general/linux-tethered-cwm-recovery-version-t2963104)
appears to be a recompiled 'fastboot' binary, as provided i.e. by XDA senior
developer Vampirefo (http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=2472806). The
community has made available a mirror copy here,

http://www.mediafire.com/download/pbr4b2x2ig9b2m5/fastboot

Bug#802774: makedepf90: buffer overflow in makedepf90

2015-10-23 Thread Alberto Marmodoro
Package: makedepf90
Version: 2.8.8-1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,
The program 'makedepf90' from Debian package in subject fails when a hard-coded
limit in the length of the '-r' argument is passed, i.e.:

$ makedepf90 -r "mpif90.openmpi -fcheck=all -Wall -fbacktrace -fbounds-check
-fcheck=array-temps -Wconversion-extra -pedantic-errors
-ffpe-trap=zero,overflow,underflow -Werror -Wno-error=unused-function -O0 -g
-pg -cpp -ffree-form -ffree-line-length-none -DUSE_MPI -llapack -c %f.f90"
*f90 > obj_dependencies.makefile

with error message:
*** Error in `makedepf90': free(): invalid next size (normal):
0x015f13d0 ***
Aborted

If the argument is shortened, things work out as they should:
makedepf90 -r "gfortran -fcheck=all -Wall -fbacktrace -fbounds-check
-fcheck=array-temps -Wconversion-extra -pedantic-errors -Werror
-Wno-error=unused-function -O0 -g -pg -cpp -ffree-form -ffree-line-length-none
-llapack -c %f.f90" *f90 > obj_dependencies.makefile

Please consider reporting upstream, or patching the provided program to extend
its arguments' buffer size / fail gracefully with a report about maximal number
of characters allowed.

Many thanks,
--
Alberto.

Bug#802774: makedepf90: Security warning; preliminary patch provided.

2015-10-23 Thread Alberto Marmodoro
Package: makedepf90
Version: 2.8.8-1
Followup-For: Bug #802774

Dear Maintainer,
The program 'makedepf90' contains possibilities for buffer overflow bugs,
through unsanitized runtime arguments' list.

In particular, as the passed-on compiler flags' list etc. become longer, the
'rule' (-r) replacement function can easily exceed the hard-coded default from:

global.h:#define RULE_LENGTH 256

and presently results in stack corruption from main.c.

The attached patch suggests to:
1) validate the 'rule' argument length while parsing, failing gracefully if too
big;
2) increase the default value to a less easily exceeded maximum.

There may be need for further corrections, in order to improve the safety of
the code.

Thanks for the good work,
--
Alberto Marmodoro.

Bug#760831: bootcd: Missing dependence on isolinux. Patch for parallel compression.

2014-09-08 Thread Alberto Marmodoro
Package: bootcd
Version: 4.04
Severity: normal
Tags: upstream patch

Dear Maintainer,
bootcd appears to rely, but not depend, on the isolinux package:

root@nb150:~# bootcdwrite
[...]
--- Building Modifications ---
cp: cannot stat '/usr/lib/syslinux/isolinux.bin': No such file or directory

Please consider specifying this requirement among the package dependences.

Upon manual installation via:
root@nb150:~# apt-get install isolinux

it is possible to proceed a step further with bootcd, but the directory
name where it looks for the isolinux.bin file appears wrongly in uppercase
letters:

[...]
cp: cannot stat '/usr/lib/syslinux/isolinux.bin': No such file or directory
exit=1
--- OUTPUT from cp /usr/lib/syslinux/isolinux.bin
//var/spool/bootcd/changes/isolinux ---
cp: cannot stat '/usr/lib/syslinux/isolinux.bin': No such file or directory

A temporary fix is to symlink it:
root@nb150:~# ln -s /usr/lib/ISOLINUX/isolinux.bin
/usr/lib/syslinux/isolinux.bin

Finally, please consider deploying the attached patch for improved performances
on SMP systems. It parses the number of parallel threads that the local CPU can
support, and deploys mkzftree accordingly via its -p option.

Many thanks,
--
Alberto.

Bug#760835: bootcd: Missing ldlinux.c32 support (required for isolinux ver. 5.00 and higher)

2014-09-08 Thread Alberto Marmodoro
Package: bootcd
Version: 4.04
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,
As reported on the IsoLinux wiki page:
http://www.syslinux.org/wiki/index.php/Common_Problems , Ver. 5.00 and higher
of such package introduce an additional dependence on an extra ldlinux.???
file which depends on the booting method in use. For classic BIOS booting, this
would be /usr/lib/syslinux/modules/bios/ldlinux.c32 which also needs to be
copied.

The attached patch provides the required modification for the
/usr/bin/bootcdwrite script. Outcome may be tested via QEMU through the
command line:
~# qemu-system-x86_64 -enable-kvm -boot c -cdrom /var/spool/bootcd/cdimage.iso

and specifying sr0 at the isolinux boot: prompt, when asked To select a
cdrom, specify hda ...

Thanks,
--
Alberto.

Bug#749878: squashfs-tools: please add LZMA with swapped field patch

2014-05-30 Thread Alberto Marmodoro
Package: squashfs-tools
Version: 1:4.2+20130409-2
Severity: wishlist

Dear Maintainer,
the default unsquashfs does not support LZMA with swapped fields
files, which begin with: shsq rather than the usual hsqs magic
header.

This is important to access firmware files such as Intenso's Gmbh
rt3055 embedded Linux SoC products. A patch to handle this has been
made available here, http://sourceforge.net/p/squashfs/patches/20/, and
may be applied to the latest snapshot of the program from SourceForge.

Recompilation with a Makefile that contains:
[...]
XZ_SUPPORT = 1
and further below:
[...]
LZMA_XZ_SUPPORT = 1
[...]
leads to a working unsquashfs executable, with the new capability.

Thanks a lot!

Bug#445820: konqueror: Workaround for fish:// protocol died unexpectedly

2007-11-24 Thread Alberto Marmodoro
Package: konqueror
Version: 4:3.5.8.dfsg.1-1
Followup-For: Bug #445820

Hello,
the fish:// ioslave problem is unfortunately still present and it's
rather annoying, but I'd like to submit a quick workaround that could
hopefully also shed some light on the possible culprits:
it is possible to get the full functionality back by starting konqueror
with the environment variable KDE_FORK_SLAVES=true set, i.e. from a
konsole shell as:

~$ KDE_FORK_SLAVES=true konqueror

Hope it helps! and really thanks for the very good work.

Hi, it seems that the Tip of the day automatic dialogue comes up empty
of any text with the present version of konserve. Maybe documentation

Bug#449039: xserver-xorg: X slows down and finally crash with too many remote clients

2007-11-02 Thread Alberto Marmodoro
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.3+3
Severity: normal

I'm experiencing sudden crashes of X when I have too many ( let's say
ten or so) different instances of an X client (Wolfram's Mathematica
6.0 for linux) running on different computers and redirected on my machine
through ssh tunneling.
Pointer and keyboard response, even on locally generated windows, become
sluggish immediately before the failure occurs. This does not seem to
have orgin in network unavailability issues.

If advised to do so, I'll proceed to try to reproduce and attach my
xsession-errors log.

Hope it helps. Thanks a lot,

Bug#449068: kpdf menu entries overlaps with konqueror ones namespace

2007-11-02 Thread Alberto Marmodoro
Package: kpdf
Version: 4:3.5.8-1
Severity: minor

When opening an online pdf from konqueror through kpdf embedded the
File menu will acquire kpdf entries as well. The name of some of them
will overlap though, i.e. the menu will show 2 Save as... entries,
where the first refers to the html page or frame containing the
document, the second to the document itself.

A simple fix to ameliorate the interface would be changing kpdf entry as
Save pdf file as...

Bug#445820: kdebase-kio-plugins: konqueror - fish ioslave fails

2007-11-01 Thread Alberto Marmodoro
Package: kdebase-kio-plugins
Version: 4:3.5.8.dfsg.1-1
Followup-For: Bug #445820

I confirm the bug, fish fails on connections which were previously OK
(and where ssh by itself is also fine). A discussion about it is
available at http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=145123

A workaround is to start konqueror from a shell as:

KDE_FORK_SLAVES=true konqueror

Hope it helps - it uses to be a wonderful feature, only very recently
broken.
Thanks a lot,

Bug#439901: preload: Patch for implementing idle ionice rescheduling

2007-10-29 Thread Alberto Marmodoro
Package: preload
Version: 0.4-4
Followup-For: Bug #439901

Hi, I'm attaching a simple patch to preload init.d script in order to
have it run at idle priority, i.e. so as to exploit the default CFQ
scheduler of Linux = 2.6.13 in order to use only idle disk bandwidth.
This seems to optimize performances, by reducing system load and improve
general responsiviness.

Thanks!

Hi, I've found the autodial by clicking on phone number feature quite
useful, but unfortunately both the script-hook configuration hint and
my current voip package of choice (kphone) were rather underdocumented.
Setting up things required looking at the source package of the latter
for discovering the correct -d option; a patch to add --help options
list to kphone has been submitted, here is provided a small one to add
explicit examples to kaddressbook hints as well.

Thanks,

Bug#448403: kphone: Command line options help

2007-10-28 Thread Alberto Marmodoro
Package: kphone
Version: 1:4.2-6
Severity: normal

Hi, I've found out that kphone can work pretty well with kaddressbook
Phone Script-Hook option. It requires starting the program with the
-d number option; this and the other available ones are not documented
though.
Hence I'm attaching a minor patch, ready for drop-in inside
debian/patches/, that include a terse description upon invocation with
-h. It's my first attempt at working like this with Debian packages
buildsystem, and I'd appreciate any feedback.

Thanks,

Bug#388382: kdemultimedia-kio-plugins: wrong lame encoding option results in static-like files copying audio CD via konqueror

2006-09-20 Thread Alberto Marmodoro
Package: kdemultimedia-kio-plugins
Version: 4:3.5.4-1
Severity: grave
Justification: causes non-serious data loss

The default command line configuration, or any modification of it
accessible through kcontrol interface, will spawn lame with the -x
option.
This results in mp3 files containing almost white noise like sounds, at
least on this powerpc arch, with lame version 3.96.1.

Omitting this switch, the very same operation succeds. The option
however is not accessible to the user.

Suggested patch:
Omit the -x switch

Longer term solution:
Make the final command line accessible to the user, at least as an
editable entry in ~/.kde/share/config/kcmaudiocd_encoder_lame_rc.
Something like kaudiocreatorrc commandLine option would be much more
flexible.

Bug#377356: kontact: export to mobile phone function depends on gnokii

2006-07-08 Thread Alberto Marmodoro
Package: kontact
Version: 4:3.5.3-2

The mobile phone sync functions, i.e.:

can fail reporting:
kontact: WARNING: Compiled with libgnokii version 0x3
kontact: WARNING: Using libgnokii runtime version 0x3

The package should be at least suggested. A short hint about editing
/etc/gnokiirc to set the right serial port and phone model (at least the
failback option:
model = AT

and more and more common usb to serial interface:
port = /dev/ttyUSB0

would IMHO be useful.
