In my journal, the error “Unrecoverable failure in required component
org.gnome.Shell.desktop” occurs in red during boot. Shortly before this
error message, lots of other warnings, failures, and errors get printed
(all not in red but in yellow or bold white or usual white-gray):

Bug#1043558: keyboard doesn't respond after waking up

2023-08-12 Thread Alma Madeleine

Package: linux-image-6.1.0-11-amd64
Version: 6.1.38-4
Control: affects -1 src:linux linux gnome

After a stationary PC suspended itself due to inactivity and then woke
up from suspend (on mouse or key press – I can't recollect), the
keyboard was not responsive. It had power: the LED 🄵 was lit.
Pressing the keys (I tried several keys, including 🄵Umsch and NumLock)
had no visible effect whatsoever. After physically unplugging and
plugging in the keyboard cable again to the same place, the keyboard
starting working.

The keyboard has “Microsoft® Natural® Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 v1.0” and
“Model: 1048” written on its bottom, has a German layout, and is
connected to the PC via a cable ending with a USB-A plug.

As opposed to the keyboard, the mouse, which was plugged into the
neighbor USB-A port, was working normally.

The error happens only seldom (every couple of weeks or even months)
after suspend due to inactivity followed by getting awake; much more
often, the keyboard works normally. A simple test consisting of putting
the PC to sleep manually followed by awakening it did not cause the
error to reoccur.

Gratefully,
Alma

Bug#1056749: Program in disorder! (Saving and reloading may fix this problem.)

2023-11-25 Thread Alma Madeleine

Package: nethack-x11
Version: 3.6.6-3+b2

Start xnethack from an xterm in Gnome on Xorg. Observe “Warning: Cannot
convert string "nh10" to type FontStruct” printed to the console. In the
nethack window, choose your character (say, human, samurai, male,
lawful), and click “Play”. Close the greeting text window. Press
"Shift+O" for options. Observer a bunch of error messages in the
information pane:

“
Program in disorder! (Saving and reloading may fix this problem.)
XrmGetResourceError (nethack.map.)
”
where  ∈ {green, blue, magenta, cyan, orange, …}

Saving and reloading does NOT fix the problem.

I'd be happy if I could kindly ask for a bugfix.

Gratefully,
Alma

Bug#1055807: Gtk-Message: hh:mm:ss.sss: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module"

2023-11-11 Thread Alma Madeleine

Package: gimp
Version: 2.10.34-1

When starting GIMP from an xterm on Xorg on any file, say, in my case,

gimp IMG_7314.HEIC

the message about a failure to load canberra-gtk-module is printed to
the console. GIMP seems to work as usual (for me). However, the console
is cluttered; this bothers me. In my case:

Gtk-Message: 21:36:38.883: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module"

If this message is no longer relevant, this printout should be removed.
If this message is meaningful (but the effect has not been visible to me
so far or is unimportant), the corresponding package should probably be
added at least to the "Suggests" list of GIMP. (I really cannot vouch
for this, but the first choice of the package to be installed is
probably libcanberra-gtk-module, and the second one is probably
libcanberra-gtk0, as neither of the packages is installed on my computer.)

Gratefully,
Alma

Bug#1055899: Allow HEIC extension for eog when heif-gdk-pixbuf is installed

2023-11-13 Thread Alma Madeleine

Package: bash-completion
Version: 1:2.11-6
Control: affects -1 + eog heif-gdk-pixbuf

When the package heif-gdk-pixbuf is installed, the Eyes Of GNOME image
viewer (eog) can display HEIC files. However, install heif-gdk-pixbuf
and eog, open an xterm on Xorg, cd into /tmp, ensure that no files
matching the pattern file* are present in /tmp, and then issue the
following:

$ touch file.jpg
$ touch file.heic
$ eog file↹

The symbol ↹ means you should hit the [Tab] button on the keyboard. We
observe the autocompletion of the above to

$ eog file.jpg

Now let's replace the last three chars by "h" and hit [Tab] again:

$ eog file.h↹

We observe that nothing autocompletes; the result is as before (“$ eog
file.h”) despite the existence of a unique file starting with “file.h”
(namely, file.heic).

We kindly ask that the extensions heic and HEIC be recognized as valid
for eog iff heif-gdk-pixbuf is installed.

Gratefully,
Alma
