Bug#405987: Gnome applications menu does not get updated
Dear Bill and others who helped, I was thinking maybe it is something wrong due to /usr/local previous libraries which I used on Sarge, mostly gphoto2 and some gnome bluetooth, but there were some pango and I think one called libgmenu or similar. I tried with renaming /usr/local to /usr/local1 and I found out that after ldconfig I got the Gnome Applications menu, so later I deleted by hand some libraries in /usr/local and I have got Applications menu back. Thank you for the help, I have solved it now, it was my own problem on the machine. The bug shall be closed. Bug#407033: gnome-menus: After upgrade to Etch: Applications menu is empty and never gets populated
Hello, I have purged gnome-menus and gnome-panel and bunch of related applications from my system, by using aptitude purge. And I installed them again and I don't get Applications menu in Gnome panel yet. Your suggestion below I have tried and it is independent of the problem. I have today tried with new user which has no configurations and still there were no Applications. It is even more disappointing because yesterday I have installed Etch on the computer of my friend, but obviously my own upgrade broke the Gnome system completely. >> .config/menus: >> total 8 >> -rw-r--r-- 1 newuser3 newuser3 5409 2007-01-16 06:22 debian-menu.menu >> > > What happens if you move away this file ? Bug#407928: Not starting ffproxy due to option in /etc/default
Hello, I think that one option could be used: START_ON_BOOT=no but script can be started AFTER the boot manually: /etc/init.d/ffproxy start because that is the reason to have the start stop script, right? If you think you want users to be able to disable start at all, you can have another option in /etc/default/ffproxy: DISABLE_COMPLETELY=yes But I don't think that is required, as if someone wants to make: /etc/init.d/ffproxy start that implies it shall start. Bug#407928: Not starting ffproxy due to option in /etc/default
Hello, I can always find solution for myself easily and thank you. It is also possible to install any software without Debian packaging. But this is bug for future Debian OS. I think you are right about using update-rc.d, as it shall be so: http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-opersys.html#s-sysvinit but your solution below is even more illogical. The user or admin, if he does not want to start ffproxy on boot, shall say to ffprox to start on boot and circumvent such decision by doing something else. Don't you get the point how silly it is? Proposal: 1. Either you have decision to start on boot and it happens so. 2. Or you don't have decision to start on boot and it does not start on boot, but it shall be started by /etc/init.d/ffproxy 3. Or you implement it in such way that update-rc.d is used and that alone decides if it will run on boot. 4. Or you insert another option to prevent starting at all in addition to boot option. > if you want to use ffproxy and not start it at boot then : > be sure that 'FFPROXY_START=yes' in /etc/default/ffproxy, then run > something like 'update-rc.d -f ffproxy remove'. > -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#407929: ffproxy: failed to kill process ID, but process was killed
It is not bug in start-stop-daemon but in the script belonging to ffproxy. The user decides what shall be started on boot. This can be done by rcconf or update-rc.d on Debian system. For example, some users don't want apache to start on the root as that is how I like it. But after the boot, it shall be possible to start the service by using: /etc/init.d/some_script Your script in the configuration /etc/default asks only if the script shall be started on boot. That is wrong, because if I say NO, I cannot start script AFTER THE BOOT without modifying the configuration. Either state in the configuration script /etc/default/something that you ask people if the ffproxy shall start at all, or enable the option in /etc/init.d/ffproxy that script can be started AFTER THE BOOT without modifying configuration, but not on BOOT as configured in /etc/default/ffproxy Do you get the idea? It is very logical to me. Bug#407927: iceape: proxy configuration disabled
Dear Hendrik-Jan, I am sorry if I was not polite enough. I understood the bug reporting system as way to improve Debian system, so I understand that correcting bugs helps get better operating system later. I suppose that bugs also go to upstream maintainers. Further, thousands of people have been used or use mozilla in their existing Sarge system, just like me. Some percentage of them want to use proxy settings. I have that picture in mind. Now, Etch is not stable and many people do not upgrade yet. You know what happens when they upgrade? There will be just more bugs and more time to spend. Maybe nobody else experiences this problem but me, I don't know. However, I used Sarge, I did changes to profile through the Sarge Mozilla and Iceape is follow up and now proxy settings cannot be touched. That is what I observe. In that regard the profile does have common things with same product under different name. If Iceape is re-using previous configuration files and serves as replacement for Mozilla, it shall also handle them correctly. > As that profile is not generated by iceape, I'd say it's not an iceape > bug. Bug#407927: iceape: proxy configuration disabled
Dear Hendrik-Jan, first, if software does not allow me to change proxy settings, I do think that is bug and shall be improved. And if there is error with profile, iceape shall correct it or at least give a warning what is wrong. You have assumptions that I have messed up with the profile and that was not determined at all. I understand so far that you have no correct information why I cannot setup proxy. Permissions are setup correctly. I have manually deleted all proxy settings from prefs.js and nothing changes. When some file is wrong software shall say it is wrong or corrupted, but iceape simply disallow any changes without any information. >thank you for the clarification. >First of all, I understand your problem, but I don't think it is an i>ceape bug. Bug#407033: gnome-menus: After upgrade to Etch: Applications menu is empty and never gets populated
Dear Loïc Minier, > You can try strace on the panel. You can also try creating a new user > to see whether it is affected by the problem in the default config. > I am not as skilled to use strace, however it is probably not panel question but generation of menus. I am always trying out with new users and clean configurations and also with present users. Do you know where is the Gnome applications menu saved? Which program is updating the Gnome applications? I think it is in /etc/xdg/menus/gnome-applications.menu but inside I see: /etc/X11/applnk /usr/share/gnome/apps which are basically not present at all. The directory /etc/X11/applnk is not existent. The directory /usr/share/gnome/apps/Applications contains only two entries and /etc/xdg/menus/gnome-applications.menu belongs to package gnome-menus. update-menus does not fix it. Further I don't know if gnome-panel is really reading /etc/xdg/menus/gnome-applications.menu Do you have now some other idea? Armando
Bug#407033: gnome-menus: After upgrade to Etch: Applications menu is empty and never gets populated
Dear Loïc Minier, > Do you have fam or gamin installed? Could you restart fam or kill > gamin if you do I have been installing various programs and have noticed that gamin and fam conflicts together, and cannot be installed on same system: Package: gamin Conflicts: fam When I start gnome, this is started: /usr/lib/gamin/gamin_server Nothing is enabled in /etc/gamin/gaminrc. I have already tried using fam due to similar advice from #debian at irc.debian.org and today I tried again and this is result: I had to automatically remove: gamin libgamin-dev libgamin0 python-gamin sabayon in order to get fam working. I have logged in as new user into new Gnome session and following was running: /usr/sbin/famd -T 0 and there were no menu items under Gnome Applications. Further, I don't see how is this related, because menu items are not generated in any other Gnome related menus (like under KDE, IceWm, perlpanel...) It is not about spotting changed files, what I believe fam and gamin do. Please if you have some other smart idea, let me know, and I will try out, as I would like to use Gnome. Armando

Bug#407033: gnome-menus: After upgrade to Etch: Applications menu is empty and never gets populated
Package: gnome-menus Version: 2.16.1-2 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable I am on Etch. Since one week I upgraded from Sarge. My system was working well and Gnome was working well. Now I cannot use Gnome session from GDM login, because there are no menus in the gnome panel. If I use Gnome section from the IceWm start panel, there are also no Gnome menus. That means something was changed from Sarge to Etch in such way that Gnome menus are not any more usable. update-menus does not help to get Gnome applications menu. Applications menu is empty. Desktop menu and Place are just usable as normal, but there are no applications. Other applications like perlpanel which usually was showing Gnome applications as well do not show any entries now. The same happens if I create new user and log in the new Gnome session, or if I use some other older user from Sarge. Dear Josselin, so far I had some success in "seeing" the applications in gnome-panel: - I was logged in as user A, than I have opened terminal, xhost +, su as other user (B) in login shell, exported DISPLAY, then I have delete ALL hidden directories as user B and run gnome-panel. Suddenly I could see applications in the menu. After I logged out and logged in again through gdm into Gnome session as user B, I could not see the Applications, it was empty. I tried deleting all hidden directories and running gnome-panel again, but nothing appeared. Further, I came back as user A into IceWM session, and repeated the same process, xhost +, su as user B, exported DISPLAY and deleted all hidden directories as user B and run gnome-panel. NO APPLICATIONS showed. Then I repeated again, restarted gdm killed all process, also restart computer, tried again as user B to see the Applications menu but nothing was there. Loggin as root or any other user in Gnome does not show Applications menu. I had some success, after deleting some panel configurations, deleting .gconfd/saved-state and some accels, basically directories which were formed when I COULD SEE APPLICATIONS first time I logged in as user B, then I got panel which I could use, add application, use the right click and so on. However, Applications menu is empty. Panel works fine, without applications. Armando -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I am using now Etch and Etch is not stable yet and bug report is related to Etch. If I try with that version of liborbit2, will that be inclued in Etch? Bug#405408: k3b: Unable to reload media - shall be changed
Package: k3b Version: 0.12.17-8 Severity: normal I am often writing DVD-RWs. When k3b starts writing on it, first it says that it does automatical pre-formatting, but after that it shows unpleasant warning message with disturbing sound: Unable to reload media, please reload manually. That is probably due to laptop design. However, once it has writtn all the data it ejects the DVD and says gently that user shall reload media and press OK. My proposal is to remove that disturbing warning after pre-formatting (blanking) DVD and to have there the same "Reload the media and press OK" notice, without any sound. Both, disturbing warning and the notice after completing the DVD are not logical to be together. -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.15 Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages k3b depends on: ii cdparanoia 3.10+debian~pre0-4 audio extraction tool for sampling ii genisoimage 9:1.1.0-1 Creates ISO-9660 CD-ROM filesystem ii kdebase-bin 4:3.5.5a.dfsg.1-2 core binaries for the KDE base mod ii kdelibs-data 4:3.5.5a.dfsg.1-5 core shared data for all KDE appli ii kdelibs4c2a 4:3.5.5a.dfsg.1-5 core libraries and binaries for al ii libacl1 2.2.41-1Access control list shared library ii libart-2.0-2 2.3.17-1Library of functions for 2D graphi ii libattr1 2.4.32-1Extended attribute shared library ii libaudio21.8-2 The Network Audio System (NAS).
