Package: cyrus-imapd
Version: 2.5.10-3
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?

Jessie to Stretch upgrade

Imap etc seems to work ok. Found the problem scanning logs.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)

Google finds -
https://www.banquise.org/software/how-to-recover-from-cyrus-when-you-have-some-db-errors/

   * What was the outcome of this action?

But the error is not apparent at startup. Imap is working.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

Expecting a config change to be made.

Bug#907646: amd64-microcode: platform microcode: firmware: failed to load amd-ucode/microcode_amd_fam17h.bin (-2)

2018-08-30 Thread Berni Elbourn
Package: amd64-microcode
Version: 2.20160316.1~deb8u1
Severity: wishlist

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?

I move this system to new hardware with Rixen7 2700X a few weeks ago. All is
well and I have just noticed the log entry

[7.473799] platform microcode: firmware: failed to load
amd-ucode/microcode_amd_fam17h.bin (-2)

Presumably there is no need for this firmware. Can the error be masked?

If it needed - can I help testing?

Bug#810024: mysql-server: Starting MySQL database server: mysqld ........ ..... FAILED

2016-01-05 Thread Berni Elbourn
Package: mysql-server
Version: 5.5.46-0+deb8u1
Severity: minor
Tags: patch

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?

wheezy to jessie upgrade

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

learn about systemd

   * What was the outcome of this action?

systemd's extream parallelism delays the startup of mysql server
beyound that expected previosuly

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

for mysql to wait until started, or to report a proper error code.

*** End of the template - remove these template lines ***

The patch which works for here is to extend the wait for mysql start to 90
seconds as follows:

/etc/init.d/mysql from line 111:-

# 6s was reported in #352070 to be too few when using ndbcluster
# 14s was reported in #736452 to be too few with large installs
# 30 is far to short in the jessie systemd rush Berni 3/1/15
for i in $(seq 1 90); do
sleep 1
if mysqld_status check_alive nowarn ; then break; fi
log_progress_msg "."
done

Perhap instead there should be some serialisation introduced into the systemd
startup to maximise the resources available to a critical service such as a
database startup. If I find out how I will follow up. Meantime please feel
free to close the bug.

The current version of Icedove in Backports is maintaint by Mike Hommey,
not by the Icedove Package Team. We currently only provide version 24 in
experimental because we don't feel it is currently ready for usage
without problems, as we see with by your bugreport.
Anyway, it's a regression.

We allready have another bug #724688 with the same symptom, a missed
symbol in the libxul.so. We haven't found any time to work on it,
propably there is something to fix while we link the libxul.so in the
build of the Icedove packages.

Carsten

I arrived here using the esr recommendations at http://mozilla.debian.net/ I will now forward the details to their
mail list. Yes, it is the official lighting the add-ons procedure in icedove.

Huge thanks,

Bug#730450: icedove: crash after updating 10-24 with lightning add on

2013-11-25 Thread Berni Elbourn

Oops. The instructions http://mozilla.debian.net/ fixes this.

My sources.list looked like this...

# Mozilla
deb http://mozilla.debian.net/ wheezy-backports iceweasel-esr
deb http://mozilla.debian.net/ wheezy-backports icedove-esr

which I recall originate from sed'ing squeeze to wheezy for the Debain upgrade. Removing those entries fixes the apt-get
update.

Sorry for the noise - please close me.

Erm. To clarify that last missmash.

tg3 driver in linux-firmware-nonfree with Squeeze or Squeeze-backport kernel is
not stable
3.122n driver from Broadcom with Squeeze kernel is stable
3.122n driver from Broadocm with Squeeze-backport kernel is not stable - so

Bug#681089: firmware-linux-nonfree: Broadcom NetXtreme BCM5722 dropped packets

2012-07-10 Thread Berni Elbourn
Package: firmware-linux-nonfree
Version: 0.35~bpo60+1
Severity: normal

With standard squeeze kernel seemingly once a day the nic stops
working. Looking at the switch port it seems the nic is transmitting (or
retransmitting) something as fast as possible. A simple ifdown/ifup
seems to cure for rest of working day.

The latest backport kernel 3.2.20-1~bpo60+1 and
firmware-linux-nonfree_0.35~bpo60+1 the nic does seems to be stable. iperf
reports 1gb performance. However the count of dropped packets is not zero.

I have changed cables and switch ports. There is another other gigabit nic on
the switch. This is a nVidia Corporation MCP77 and this has no errors or
dropped packets.

I also have tried the module 3.122n from Broadcom. The nic stops working after
a few minutes with the switch port showing rapid transmission sympton as per
1st para. Interestingy the 3.122n module does not update the firmware files in
/lib/firmware...

I note for others that lightning and related google calendar plugins seem to
work well as a replacement in the backported icedove.

2012-04-24 Thread Berni Elbourn
Package: akonadi-server
Version: 1.3.1-3+squeeze1

Creating a whole day event shows up in Korganizer through akanadi as two days.

eg. an all day event on 1.1.13 will show in Korganizer as starting 1.1.3 but
with duration 2 days.

I think this relates to this:

True to my offer - I could run up the patched kernel on a virtual
machine here .. my problem was on a small 128mb memory system. I cannot
test 8Gb but can try the patch on 128Mb if you want it.

It occurs you might instead like to avoid downtime and run a cron job
every hour(?) say to locally mount and unmount the export? Chances are
it will always keep the 64k memory block available for the user mounts.

For some reason this system would not reboot today. I eventually gave up and
re-created the root partition using the squeeze cd and restored from last

All seems well again well but since my orignal boot problem was related to a
missing uuid disk I did a little more investigation. It seems on this system

Bug#636306: mount.nfs: page allocation failure. order:4, mode:0xc0d0

2011-09-07 Thread Berni Elbourn

The trick to do task || task in cron did work several times.

I am very grateful but (would you believe it) only yesterday the system
was moved onto something with far more memory. :-(

I doubt it will suffer the problem again. If this becomes an issue for
others I would be happy to set-up a machine to try the patch out.

Bug#636306: mount.nfs: page allocation failure. order:4, mode:0xc0d0

2011-08-10 Thread Berni Elbourn
Instead of switching to cifs, I tried swapiness=100, and just doubling
up on the backup job:

25 23 * * * disk-backup || (sleep 100; disk-backup)

Last night the first backup failed, second backup worked. Yippee.

The first backup failed by a simple test for the presence of a file the
nfs mount. I wonder is there some kind of cleanup event that the first
nfs mount failure causes that I could run on this system periodically?

Bug#636306: mount.nfs: page allocation failure. order:4, mode:0xc0d0

2011-08-02 Thread Berni Elbourn
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.32-35
Severity: normal

The mount failure occures on this system about 1 in 10. Subsequent mounts work
just fine. This never happened on Lenny. Sorry if this is a duplicate but bts
was down when I ran reportbug. Google seems to go for this:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=593035

A missing parameter is mentioned here:

https://lkml.org/lkml/2011/2/24/73

grep NFS /boot/config-2.6.32-5-686
CONFIG_NFS_FS=m
CONFIG_NFS_V3=y
CONFIG_NFS_V3_ACL=y
CONFIG_NFS_V4=y
# CONFIG_NFS_V4_1 is not set
CONFIG_NFS_FSCACHE=y
CONFIG_NFSD=m
CONFIG_NFSD_V2_ACL=y
CONFIG_NFSD_V3=y
CONFIG_NFSD_V3_ACL=y
CONFIG_NFSD_V4=y
CONFIG_NFS_ACL_SUPPORT=m
CONFIG_NFS_COMMON=y
CONFIG_NCPFS_NFS_NS=y

Important to note that the next mount work perfectly. I can switch to cifs but
others may find this a show stopper.

Deliver.db is one of the databases that are trouble (another is the tls
cache). You are better of removing them on _all_ migrations (large
version skips and arch migrations such as i386-amd64).

Huge thanks. Hmmm - auto reply state, and a bit of spam protection ...
hardly anyone would notice the loss.

Is it possible to alter the similar line in README.Debian.database.gz,
maybe something like: Don't bother upgrading the DUPLICATE and TLS
database, just delete them: the information there is not reused when you
upgrade Cyrus.

Bug#629592: Script errors

2011-07-12 Thread Berni Elbourn

Squeeze update today, but after running:

http://anonscm.debian.org/gitweb/?p=pkg-cyrus-imapd/cyrus-imapd-2.4.git;a=blob_plain;f=debian/cyrus-upgrade-db

And starting cyrus, these errors appear in the mail.err log:

Jul 12 12:07:11 red cyrus/ctl_cyrusdb[23274]: DBERROR: dbenv-open
'/var/lib/cyrus/db' failed: No such file or directory

Jul 12 12:07:11 red cyrus/ctl_cyrusdb[23274]: DBERROR: writing

Ok so I re-created /var/lib/cyrus/db directory:

drwxr-xr-x 2 cyrus mail4096 Jul 12 13:08 db

then these errors appear in mail.err:

Jul 12 13:08:01 red cyrus/lmtpunix[577]: FATAL: lmtpd: unable to init

Jul 12 13:08:01 red cyrus/lmtpunix[578]: FATAL: lmtpd: unable to init

Finally, I read deliver.db can be safely deleted when cyrus is shutdown.
Hey presto no more noise in the log.

Should cyrus-upgrad-db really delete /var/lib/cyrus/db...these lines?

else
# Remove empty environment
rm -rf $CONFIG_DIR/db
fi

And is there proper way to migrate deliver.db?

Thanks

Bug#604698: Update: it IS fixed in wheezy for /

2011-05-11 Thread Berni Elbourn
I tried this again using tar from wheezy on a new system. And yippee no
segfault and the / incremental does seem to produce a valid incremental
file.

My missing step is to be sure to regenerate the snar data from the same
version of tar. That means starting with a new fresh full backup!

This behaviour is (kind of) implied here:

http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-tar/2010-05/msg00029.html

So I think this version works when installed on squeeze:

Package: tar
Essential: yes
Status: install ok installed
Priority: required
Section: utils
Installed-Size: 2520
Maintainer: Bdale Garbee bd...@gag.com
Architecture: i386
Version: 1.25-3
Replaces: cpio ( 2.4.2-39)
Pre-Depends: libc6 (= 2.6)
Suggests: bzip2, ncompress, xz-utils
Breaks: dpkg-dev ( 1.14.26)
Conflicts: cpio (= 2.4.2-38)
Conffiles:
 /etc/rmt 3c58b7cd13da1085eff0acc6a00f43c7
Description: GNU version of the tar archiving utility
Tar is a program for packaging a set of files as a single archive in tar
format. The function it performs is conceptually similar to cpio, and to
things like PKZIP in the DOS world. It is heavily used by the Debian
package
management system, and is useful for performing system backups and
exchanging

 sets of files with others.

Bug#604698: Sorry but NOT fixed in squeeze or wheezy 1.25-3 for /

2011-05-10 Thread Berni Elbourn
Following upgrade to squeeze from lenny last week, tar (from
tar_1.23-3_i386.deb) segfaults on incremental backup of root:

/usr/local/sbin/disk-backup: line 220: 32443 Segmentation fault
$TAR --create --totals --verbose --one-file-system --gzip
--exclude-from=$EXCLUDE_FILE
--file=$TARGET/$MOUNTPOINTNAME.diff.$DAY.$HOUR.tz
--listed-incremental=$TARGET/$MOUNTPOINTNAME.full.snar.diff $SOURCE
$LOG 21

dmesg:

tar[897]: segfault at 0 ip 0807672d sp bfeb4e70 error 4 in
tar[8048000+4c000]

With variables expanded:

tar --create --totals --verbose --one-file-system --gzip
--exclude-from=/tmp/32617.excludes
--file=/data/data4/sv37/backup/3/root.diff.10.08.tz
--listed-incremental=/data/data4/sv37/backup/3/root.full.snar.diff /

Installing tar_1.25-3_i386.deb from wheezy, there is no segfault but
only the / directory is in the archive:

# tar tzvf root.diff.10.08.tz
drwxr-xr-x root/root 171 2011-05-05 15:20 ./

Which looks like bug #604394. Reverting to tar_1.20-1+lenny1_i386.deb
from lenny. Backups works as before:

could you please tell us what happens with the X stack from sid, and
KMS enabled again? Trying with kernel 2.6.37-1-$arch (in sid as well)
should tell us whether there's still some kernel bug around.

KiBi.

Sorry I don't have a platform lying about to test sid.

I still have to run modeset=0 for squeeze to work round this bug.

Fixes the aptitude warnings. I wonder now if this is a bug at all or

Bug#595731: tar exit = 2, tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors but why?

2010-09-06 Thread Berni Elbourn

--exclude-from=$EXCLUDE_FILE \
--file=$TARGET/$MOUNTPOINTNAME.full.tz \
--listed-incremental=$TARGET/$MOUNTPOINTNAME.full.snar \

Here is the debug information from the log:

# grep -v : / root.full.log | grep tar:
tar: Removing leading `/' from member names
tar: Removing leading `/' from hard link targets
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

Checking one or two files in the archive tend to suggest the backup was
successful. And eyeballing the log (which is huge) there are some socket
ignored logs...but these are/should not be the cause of a fatal exit.

It seems impossible to know which file, or event failure happened.

Bug#587743: gnucash: segfault on open

2010-07-12 Thread Berni Elbourn

Greetings,

Micha Lenk wrote:

I've just tried it, but unfortunately updating the glib2.0 backport to

I never got to the bottom of similar. I just moved to 2.2.9 in squeeze
after checking with GnuCash mail list:

Gnucash is bombing out on me.

To be fair my system is mostly from stable, with
the odd thing from testing for multimedia and X support. I suspect
there is a library incompatibility. Any ideas which one?

I created a new account. The crash occurs when trying to open a view on

Most likely you have a saved value of -1 or something else in gconf.
Unclear how that happened, but clearly GnuCash should perform some
testing for widely weird values and have reasonable defaults for when
the value is grossly wrong.

 gnucash --version
gnc.bin-Message: main: binreloc relocation support was disabled at

 GnuCash 2.2.6

Also I have tried Gnucash in testing...that is 2.2.9 and it works
fine. So I could just upgrade.

Yes, you should.

If I do upgrade do all users have to be on the same version to open
shared accounts? e.g. Could I use 2.2.9, while my mamager uses 2.2.6
on the same account we have saved on the server?

Using a mix of 2.2.x versions should be fine. You should update.

Note that version in Lenny was fine and results after upgrading to squeeze.

The bug is difficult to describe:- The initial google earth display load up fine
.. Zooming however creates a wrapped pattern on the edges which eventually
corrup

I will try and work out how to follow up with a screen dump.

Bug#570350: linux-image-2.6.26-2-amd64: kernel BUG at kernel/exit.c:822! PATCHES

2010-06-29 Thread Berni Elbourn

The bug is still present in Google Chrome Stable version: 5.0.375.86

Ben Hutchings wrote:
snip I think we should actually apply a second patch. So, please
try the two attached patches snip Please test this fix by following
the instructions at
http://kernel-handbook.alioth.debian.org/ch-common-tasks.html#s-common-official

I have enclosed those patches for the bug report. They were built on
source containing linux-2.6_2.6.26-24.dsc and tested on two Amd SMPs:

AMD Turion(tm) 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-60
Quad-Core AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 1352

Prior to the patch I could sometimes force the kernel problem by opening
Chrome say 4 times, open some sites, leave a while then closing all the
chrome windows quickly. After two-ish days of pretty intense usage so
far no repeat of the kernel BUG message. And for me these patches don't
regress other things.

BUT (and its a big BUT). Chrome 5 continues to use root setuid. So I
doubt that this is the end of the kernel bug story. I have updated the
Chrome fault log accordingly:

http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=35440

I really would be happier if there were no root setuid involved in a
browser. Also I am not sure there is enough demand here to warrant a
change to the production Debian kernels.

Much as it hurts: The answer for me, at least until we understand a
little more about the sandbox, is to simply avoid using Google Chrome.

Wait and see?

Subject: [PATCH 1/2] pid_ns: zap_pid_ns_processes: fix the -child_reaper changing

commit add0d4dfd660e9e4fd0af3eac3cad23583c9558f upstream.

zap_pid_ns_processes() sets pid_ns-child_reaper = NULL, this is wrong.

Yes, we have already killed all tasks in this namespace, and sys_wait4()
doesn't see any child. But this doesn't mean -children list is empty, we
may have EXIT_DEAD tasks which are not visible to do_wait(). In that case
the subsequent forget_original_parent() will crash the kernel because it
will try to re-parent these tasks to the NULL reaper.

Even if there are no childs, it is not good that forget_original_parent()
uses reaper == NULL.

Change the code to set -child_reaper = init_pid_ns.child_reaper instead.
We could use pid_ns-parent-child_reaper as well, I think this does not
really matter. These EXIT_DEAD tasks are not visible to the new -parent
after re-parenting, they will silently do release_task() eventually.

Note that we must change -child_reaper, otherwise
forget_original_parent() will use reaper == father, and in that case we
will hit the (correct) BUG_ON(!list_empty(father-children)).

Subject: [PATCH 2/2] pid_ns: (BUG 11391) change -child_reaper when init-group_leader exits

commit 950bbabb5a804690a0201190de5c22837f72f83f upstream.

We don't change pid_ns-child_reaper when the main thread of the
subnamespace init exits. As Robert Rex robert@exasol.com pointed
out this is wrong.

Yes, the re-parenting itself works correctly, but if the reparented task
exits it needs -parent-nsproxy-pid_ns in do_notify_parent(), and if the
main thread is zombie its -nsproxy was already cleared by
exit_task_namespaces().

Introduce the new function, find_new_reaper(), which finds the new
-parent for the re-parenting and changes -child_reaper if needed. Kill
the now unneeded exit_child_reaper().

Also move the changing of -child_reaper from zap_pid_ns_processes() to
find_new_reaper(), this consolidates the games with -child_reaper and
makes it stable under tasklist_lock.

Just a snippet on the Google Sandbox. From here:

http://blog.chromium.org/2008/10/new-approach-to-browser-security-google.html

The entire HTML rendering and JavaScript execution is isolated to its
own class of processes; the renderers. These are the ones that live in
the sandbox.

...perhaps this should be discussed elsewhere.

Wow. Thanks. Also it seems:-

does the job ... eventually :-)

By the Way: 570350 is archived and can't be updated - should it be

The only bug I see in the current version is that it doesn't remove
the route to the PPTP server on stop:

Hi. Sorry neither way. I haven't used the applet since. Some

This may relate to #542115. This system kernel is new (HP ML115) and
most definitely not tainted with ndiswrappers or nvidia. I am logging
the report just prior to repooting. System seems stable enough.

This could be pretty grim for an multiuser Xserver which I was

This is a kernel bug but it appears to be triggered specifically by
Chrome. I'm trying to find out just what Chrome does to trigger it.

Bug#517449: Found in Debian 5.0.3 - Linux version 2.6.26-2-amd64 (Debian 2.6.26-19)

2009-10-05 Thread Berni Elbourn

Sorry but after running for weeks with no problems using this kernel:

Linux version 2.6.26-2-amd64 (Debian 2.6.26-17lenny1) (da...@debian.org) (gcc version 4.1.3 20080704 (prerelease)

On a Quad-Core AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 2372 HE stepping 02

I safe-upgrade'd on Friday to:

And by Monday the console was unresponsive, even to magic - sysrq. I am pretty sure the machine was not under any
stress at 9:30 on Saturday. No users, and backups start after 11pm.

Is it possible the some fixes have dropped out of current releases?

I have reverted the kernel back to Linux version 2.6.26-2-amd64 (Debian
2.6.26-17lenny1)

Berni

PS: For others who may pick this up in a search...to revert back try:

cd /var/cache/apt/archives
dpkg -i linux-image-2.6.26-2-amd64_2.6.26-17lenny1_amd64.deb
reboot

Cool. What do you really want from from us use to help pin this down.

No.

That is good to hear. How can I help here to help me to stabilise our
systems?

Bug#517449: Found in 2.6.30

2009-08-07 Thread Berni Elbourn

Grim news there is the same behaviour using 2.6.30...

ski:~# cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.6.30-bpo.1-amd64 (Debian 2.6.30-5~bpo50+1)
(no...@debian.org) (gcc version 4.3.2 (Debian 4.3.2-1.1) ) #1 SMP Wed
Aug 5 11:07:47 UTC 2009

And logs:

Aug 6 22:54:39 ski kernel: [ 2160.704087] INFO: task md2_resync:4371
blocked for more than 120 seconds.
Aug 6 22:54:39 ski kernel: [ 2160.704270] INFO: task partimage:6788

Aug 6 22:56:39 ski kernel: [ 2280.704329] INFO: task lvs:6911 blocked

Looking back over things (for my systems) this bug is exposed when a
raid 1 resync is in progress and partimage is taking a backup of one of
the logical volume snap shots on the same physical disk.

Using dd instead of partimage in the backup script does not expose the
bug - even when using the 2.6.26-17 kernel. I have lots more testing to
do...more soon.

Please include the output of /proc/version, it is difficult to map
this back to an actual kernel version. But.. it looks like you might
be running something before 2.6.26-16, whcich was built on Jun 10?

Dann, A huge thanks for this and all the other work you do for Debian!

The 2.6.26-2 above is the current Lenny kernel from the official
security repository.

I am now poised to install a kernel from lenny backports alternatively I
could wait for 2.6.26-16 to arrive in Lenny - when would that be please?

Once again a big thanks for all your work,

Note that soft lockups are a class of bug, they can have many

I am sorry if this is noise.

Bug#517449: linux-image-2.6.26-1-amd64: SCHED_IDLE issues (tasks blocked for more than 120 seconds)

2009-06-11 Thread Berni Elbourn

Hai Zaar wrote:

You found some scheduling changes made post-2.6.28 which seemed to deal
with this bug. However, that cannot be the full story because they are
modifying code which was added after 2.6.26.

The attached patch combines a bug fix made between 2.6.26 and .28 with
most of the changes you identified. Based on my reading of commit
messages and discussion, I think this makes a coherent set of changes.
However there have been many other changes to the scheduler in this time
and I cannot say for sure whether any of those are also required as I do
not have any great knowledge of it.

Please try rebuilding the lenny kernel (linux-source-2.6.26) with this
patch applied and report whether it fixes the bug for you.

Thank you for response!
I've applied the patch to most recent lenny kernel and booted it. If
in two weeks the problem does not occur, I will assume that the bug is
gone (I will let you know).

Thanks again!

Is this for Dom0?

I have two systems suffering this pain...and the silence on the Debian
kernel lists to my offers to help test the patch is deafening. ;-)

There are some patches mentioned here for 2.6.26 and also mention of 2.6.29.

I am sorry because I can not get Google to tell me how Debian Xen
kernels are patched and built :-(

How does one build something like
xen-linux-system-2.6.26-custom-xen-amd64 with those patches?

Also assuming the fixes are already included in 2.6.29how should I
build a Debian xen-linux-system-2.6.29-custom-xen-amd64?

I am familiar with make-kpkg...

Bug#484876: still not in lenny

2009-06-08 Thread Berni Elbourn

The bug is still in lenny. Doesn't look like its in squeeze or sid either???

The patch gets rid of the error reports for me.

I am relying on apt-mirror to give me a debian mirror on a usb disk.
This is essential at quite a few sites I look after with slow Internet.

It would be really nice to see this fixed in the distribution properly
please.

Bug#517449: Found in lenny 2.6.26-2-686 domU + workround?

2009-05-14 Thread Berni Elbourn

I ran a stress in a Lenny 2.6.26-2-686 hvm domu as follows:

# stress --cpu 16 --io 16 --vm 16 --hdd 16 --timeout 3600

Ok its a pretty heavy test for a dual core 2Gb domain...but I got the
same blocked task behaviour:

INFO: task stress:9878 blocked for more than 120 seconds.

Also:

hda: dma_timer_expiry: dma status == 0x24
hda: dma_timer_expiry: dma status == 0x21

The domu did reboot ok to recover. Significantly Dom0 which is
2.6.26-2-xen-amd64 survived unscathed.

Interesting downgrading the domu kernel to oldstable 2.6.18-5-686 the
same stress test passed by without incident. a work round?

Perhaps this may approach be a handy and quick work round for existing
production sites until this bug is fixed in the official Lenny kernel.

Bug#509733: Confirmed for lenny

2009-03-27 Thread Berni Elbourn

Known, some problem in the /dev/mem logic. As only X.org 1.4 still uses this
interface, I tend to ignore it until someone provides a patch.

Newer versions uses the /sys/bus/pci/devices/*/resource* interface, can
you please check if at least this works?

I can confirm this bug in stable: Lenny

Package: xen-linux-system-2.6.26-1-xen-amd64
Version: 2.6.26-13lenny2

Package: xorg
Version: 1:7.3+18

Test system is HP6715B.

You mention using a newer version of Xorg. Lenny has 1.7. Is there a
work round...?

Yep. This is no real problem for me as I will simply ditch network
manager until it works properly in stable.

Incidently I had used pptpconfig as a desktop tool for years.
pptpconfig worked perfectly but it is now depreciated in favour of
network manager.

Will, thanks for the feedback. Will pass it on to ndiswrapper dev.

My woes with ndiswrapper kernel crashes seemed to go away after upgrade

about a pile of stuff wrong with /etc/modprobe.d/ndiswrapper. I deleted
that file then ran these two commands:

ndiswrapper -i

Bug#453678: linux-image-2.6.22-3-amd64: shutdown ok but no power off on my HP6715 laptop

2007-11-30 Thread Berni Elbourn

Package: linux-image-2.6.22-3-amd64

The last report on the console is disable non boot CPUs. I don't recall that from
earlier versions. Console reponds to show_memory combination.

Problem occurs with ndiswrapper removed, also and gdm stopped.

Significantly 2.6.22-2 was just fine

To add. The fresh 2.6.23-9 from kernel.org does not exhibit this power
off problem. Everything else seems fine for me too. BTW: this kernel
feels quicker too.

Anyways this bug is fixed somewhere along the line of kernel
development. I guess it should be wishlisted for Debian's own.

This is my first bug report so bear with me on how to do that
