Bug#1035906: closed by Sandro Tosi (Re: Bug#1035906: reportbug fails to load a couple of Gtk modules)

2023-05-10 Thread Christopher Witkowski

No. Just no.

I am not the writer of reportbug, I am just trying to use it.

The error messages come out of reportbug. I don't know why it even uses
Gtk since it uses a command line interface. Or maybe it's some kind of
dependencies problem with way the package is set up. Regardless, these
don't look like error messages I should be seeing coming out reportbug
so I reported them. At my end it's a reportbug problem, the internals
are for you to sort out at your end. If it turns out to actually be a
Gtk problem then you reassign the problem. But closing it and saying
"this is not the right venue" is a totally inappropriate response.

Bug#1035910: caja: process gdk-pixbuf-thumbnailer uses excessive, >600MiB, of memory

2023-05-10 Thread Christopher Witkowski
Package: caja
Version: 1.24.0-1
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-Cc: cw...@z46860.e4ward.com

Dear Maintainer,

After looking through a few directories gdk-pixbuf-thumbnailer
sucks up a lot of memory. The directories I was looking at are
in the co-existing Windows XP SP3 Home Edition installation.
I don't know which, or which types of files, could be triggering
this behaviour.

This is on a "small" machine, an msi U120 notebook/netbook with
1GB memory hardwired (i.e. can't be increased), so, a process
using this much memory causes everything to bog down. The memory
usage of this process varies over time and getting a screen shot
at the maximum usage was impossible. But, 540MiB is still well
up there. Since reportbug doesn't allow for attachments I've
placed the screen shot at:

   http://chrisw.freeshell.org/caja/Screenshot%20at%202023-05-10%2014-00-27.png

top shows 1GiB of virtual memory for gdk-pixbuf-thumbnailer and
if all that is in actual use, resident or swap, then it is that
much worse.

I turned off thumbnails in caja and rebooted and the process and
problem were gone.

The thumbnails option should be turned off by default and there
should be a warning asscociated with this option until this is
fixed.

Bug#1035907: reportbug does not have provision for attachments

2023-05-10 Thread Christopher Witkowski
Package: reportbug
Version: 7.10.3+deb11u1
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-Cc: cw...@z46860.e4ward.com

Dear Maintainer,

Nowhere in the reportbug process is there a request for
any files you would like attached to the problem report.

I am mainly thinking of screen captures, but, other files,
e.g. large log files, would also be candidates.

Package: reportbug

Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I am trying to report a bug in reportbug using reportbug.

I got to the part where it asks me to select a text editor,
so, I selected vim.tiny, but, now, the text I need to copy
and paste here is hidden by the text editor display. And I
can't scroll up (Mate Terminal or vim.tiny problem or just
the way it is or has to be?).

I'm sure it won't be hard to work around it, but, it's just
such a dumb thing to have happen.
