Bug#697454: ifenslave-2.6: ifenslave supports 3.x kernels

2013-01-05 Thread Fabrice Lorrain
Package: ifenslave-2.6
Version: 1.1.0-20
Severity: normal

Hello Guus Sliepen,

Wheezy should ship with a kernel version =3.2.
The current description of ifenslave states :
... This package supports 2.6.x kernels and the most recent 2.4.x kernels.

It would be nice if :
- the descrition of the package could be update before wheezy release (adding
the support for 3.x kernels).
- the package could be rename without the versioning (-2.6) for wheezy or a
futur
release.

Thanks for the package and your time.

Fab

I didn't find much in debian policy.

Half the files in /etc/iscsi/* are generated during target discovery.

Yep. It is less the case for files under /etc/init.d/* .
Having md5sums for file /etc/iscsi/* is still usefull to find and check
local modified conffiles.

What is your use case? Maybe I can contribute better if I understand that.

Mostly checking/cleaning procedure for an upgrade to wheezy. Quick OS
integrity check might be a futur use.

I report this bug because out off 485 packages installed on this wheezy
box, open-iscsi is one of the 5 packages not providing checksums on
files under /etc.

Bug#593205: udhcpd: udhpcd does not bind to the correct interface

2010-08-16 Thread Fabrice LORRAIN
Package: udhcpd
Version: 0.9.8cvs20050303-2.1
Severity: normal

Hello,

Using udhcpd on a multihomed server, it seems not to use the interface
directive
in udhcpd.conf.

Booth using a vlan syntaxe :
interface eth1.1
or a physical interface :
interface eth2

result in udhcpd binding/listening to all the interface :
$ sudo netstat -natup | grep udh
udp0 0 0.0.0.0:67 0.0.0.0:*
22746/udhcpd

and distributing the lease in the wrong network through eth0.

Thanks.

Bug#585624: Info received ([icedove] icedove 3.0.4 doesn't follow network.protocol-handler.app.http* any more)

2010-07-05 Thread Fabrice Lorrain

Le 30/06/2010 12:52, Thilo Six a écrit :

There had been hope that the upcoming icedove update as of today (squeeze
3.0.5) would fix this, apparently not.

I did try the whole thing with a new user=new profile and viola icedove open
http[,s] links with the right application namely x-www-browser.
This newly created icedove profile didn´t fixed it for my mainuser.
After deleting any mime related file i could find w/o success, i created a
completely new kde profile.
Now icedove behaves right also with it´s original profile!

Here i use
$ apt-cache policy kdebase-bin
kdebase-bin:
   Installed: 4:4.4.4-1
   Candidate: 4:4.4.4-1

Apparently i am not able to trace that down to a specific setting/file but it
seems this bug here is caused by the DE and not by icedove.

Fabrice cc'ed can you try that also and [,not] confirm?

Hello Thilo,

I confirm that this pb is not fixed with icedove-3.0.5-1.
icedove is using /etc/alternatives/x-www-browser instead of using the
one pointed to in prefs.js.

My configuration is the following :

$ grep network.protocol-handler prefs.js
user_pref(network.protocol-handler.app.http, iceweasel);
user_pref(network.protocol-handler.app.https, iceweasel);

$ grep network.protocol-handler /etc/icedove/pref/icedove.js
pref(network.protocol-handler.app.http, /usr/bin/iceweasel);
pref(network.protocol-handler.app.https, /usr/bin/iceweasel);

Bug#586621: error: cannot read `/boot/grub/core.img' correctly.

2010-06-30 Thread Fabrice Lorrain
Package: grub-pc
Severity: normal

Hello,

I got the very same problem here :

macmini core2 (i386)
refit as first stage bootloader
grub-pc as a second stage bootloader

Grub didn't boot since upgrade to grub-pc_1.98+20100617-1_i386.
Downgrading to grub-pc/grub-common to _1.98+20100614-2_i386 fixes this mess.

aptitude hold on both package until a proper fix is provided.
Please cc me when this is the case.

I'm interrested in understanding the following provided by debconf :
grub-pc/mixed_legacy_and_grub2: true
I though I removed/purge any dependancy/configuration against grub-legacy when
I migrated to grub2.

Thanks.

Bug#585624: icedove 3.0.4 doesn't follow network.protocol-handler.app.http* any more.

2010-06-12 Thread Fabrice Lorrain
Package: icedove
Version: 3.0.4-3

Hello,

Since my migration to version 3, icedove opens http url in galeon instead of
iceweasel.

Looking at the pb, it seems that icedove doesn't follow
the network.protocol-handler.app.http* anymore and is only using x-www-browser.

Changing the value either in /etc/icedove/pref/icedove.js or in
~/.icedove/*/pref.js doesn't change anything :

$ grep protocol-handler /etc/icedove/pref/icedove.js
pref(network.protocol-handler.app.http, /usr/bin/iceweasel);
pref(network.protocol-handler.app.https, /usr/bin/iceweasel);

$ grep protocol-handler prefs.js
user_pref(network.protocol-handler.app.http, iceweasel);
user_pref(network.protocol-handler.app.https, iceweasel);

$ ls -l /etc/alternatives/x-www-browser
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 15 1 mai 14:02 /etc/alternatives/x-www-browser -
/usr/bin/galeon

This might be an unwanted feature with multi-homed servers.

Providing a parameter to give a list of interface to bind to would be

Bug#584808: lldpd : adding a way to pick the running mode (tx/rx/tx_rx).

2010-06-06 Thread Fabrice Lorrain
Package: lldpd
Version: 0.4.2-1
Severity: wishlist
Tags: upstream

Hello,

Using lldp with HP procurve switches, I've been using the posibility
of configuring LLDP in ways on each port :
- TX = transmit only mode
- RX = receive only mode
- TX_RX = mixte mode, TX RX

lldpd doesn't seem to provide such features.

I would appreciate if it could be added in a next release.

Thanks,

Bug#584810: Choosing a saner name for _lldpd ?

2010-06-06 Thread Fabrice Lorrain

Hello,

The package is creating and using a user group _lldpd for running the
daemon. There is nothing wronk with it, but it's a bit uncommon/weird
on a Debian system (didn't find anything in the policy on the subject though).

Would you mind renaming it to something more classical (for ex. lldp or lldpd)
at least for the debian package ?

Thanks.

Bug#584811: Providing a conf file to lldpd ?

2010-06-06 Thread Fabrice Lorrain
Package: lldpd
Version: 0.4.2-1
Severity: wishlist

Hello, me again ;-)

After having read the documentation it is unclear what information lldpd
is sending on the wire. It is also unclear where it get its information from.
Documenting these would be appreciated (man 5 lldp ?).

I'm using lldp in a multi OS environnement... and the system name doesn't
seem to be standardize between Oses. Having a way (conf. file, conf. variable)
to specify it would help.

The same goes for the SystemDescr... Providing OS + kernel version is not
always the saner choice. Having a way to choose what to send would help.

Thanks,

Bug#570928: gcstar: Barcode support for comics collection.

2010-02-22 Thread Fabrice Lorrain
Package: gcstar
Version: 1.5.0-1
Severity: wishlist

Hello,

It seems that the 'comics collection mode doesn't support barcode search.
It would be an appreciated feature.

A quick way to do that would be to provide access to amazone friends from
the comics collection mode.

A better way, would be to ask amazon or any other barcode supported site and
then
do a search on one of the site dedicated to commics (BDtheque in my case).

One can also use the book collection for comics, but from my experience :
- using dedicated site gives better information.
- comics collection provide more informations.

Thanks.

2009-11-15 Thread Fabrice Lorrain

Hello,

Last upgrade of imagemagick warns about the creation of libmagickcore2-extra
and about manual installing it in case one's configuration doesn't honor
 recommends...

Thanks, but libmagickcore2-extra doesn't seems to be recommended in the correct
packages :
- not referenced in imagemagick
- only a suggest in libmagickcore2-extra

Manualy installing it works fine. Thanks for the warning.

Otherwise, the packages given by apt-cache rdepends libmagickcore2-extra, have
 very way to depends/recommends/suggests libmagickcore2-extra.
Maybe some cleaning is needed.

Fabrice,

Since you are the only user who has seen this bug and apparently have
not been able to reproduce it since clearing your configuration, it does
not qualify as severity important. If you see it happen again, let me
know.

John Lindgren

Hello John,

Ok, with the downgrade.
You can even close the bug and mention in
/usr/share/doc/audacious/Readme.Debian.gz for ex, that starting
audacious with a fresh/clean configuration might solve some
incompatibility issue in conf files during upgrade.

Thanks for the package.

Bug#532081: audacious: weird cpu usage since 2.0.1 update

John Lindgren a écrit :

Hello Fabrice,

The problem of CPU usage jumping to 100% should be fixed in 2.1:

http://hg.atheme.org/audacious/rev/1f583ea81c84

As for the steady 20% usage, I am also unable completely unable to
reproduce it. I get 1.5% CPU usage playing a 90kbps .ogg file on a
1.4gHz Celeron (with features such as visualization, equalizer, and
resampling disabled). Please attach your config file, in case a
particular option is causing the high CPU usage. Also check that ALSA
dmix is disabled, as I have known it to take exorbitant amounts of CPU
(30-40%) for its resampling.

Regards,
John Lindgren

Hello john and sorry to take so long to answer.

As far as I'm concerned, this bug can be closed.
I've been running 2.1 for quite some time now without seeing the high
cpu usage reported. The cpu usage is under 5% most of the time.

For my information, what is the proper way to check alsa configuration?

Bug#556077: galeon: Missing program for proxy configuration.

2009-11-13 Thread Fabrice Lorrain
Package: galeon
Version: 2.0.7-1.1
Severity: normal

Hello,

Using galeon under openbox.

At some time through upgrade, galeon proxy configuration has been changed.

Nowdays when you access the network configuration it states :
Network proxy configuration program was not found.

and then blablabla about using gnome control center.

This message is missleading. Either I'm missing a program, then this should be
fix by a proper dependence (I've all the Depends Recommends statisfied).
Or the proxy configuration could only be done through gnome control center which
make it a good candidate for the Depends field.

Thanks,

Fab

Hello,

Since the update to 2.0.1, audacious has a strange beheaviour concering the cpu
usage.
- it has a much higher cpu fingerprint, around 20%
- it is going crasy from time to time using 90-95% of the cpu and then back to
20%.

This append while playing .ogg through nfs, which I have been doing for years
with previous
version of audacious or xmms without pb.

This sounds like a bug in GIO, not Audacious. Does this happen when
accessing media locally?

Nope, it does also happen when playing .ogg from /tmp which is local.

Try with a blank configuration and see if that helps the situation.
There may be an incompatibility that needs investigating.

Smart thinking. Starting with a blank configuration fixes the playlist
access problem.

The current plan is to stablise the 3.1 packages, then figure out a

that is done, I'll consider packaging version 4.

Also, while we are at modifying /usr/bin/lesspipe, maybe the error

Reading through modprobe.conf(5), I think that stating more explicitly that :
- the use of /etc/modprobe.conf or /etc/modprobe.d is exclusive
- and that /etc/modprobe.conf takes precedence over /etc/modprobe.d

in this man page would help understand the proper use of those files.

Bug#493988: postinst fails because it doesn't check the existance of the rancid user

2008-11-11 Thread Fabrice Lorrain

Hello,

Upgrading from etch to lenny, I've been bitten by this bug.

The problem is that /var/lib/dpkg/info/rancid-core.postinst doesn't
check if a rancid user/group exists before calling adduser... which fails.

As this leaves the package broken in an etch to lenny upgrade I'm
bumping the severity to serious.

Be also aware that adduser --system --group doesn't insure that
GID=UID. see #453086. By just removing the rancid user and forgotting
rancid group, after a dpkg --configure rancid-core I got :

$ id rancid
uid=112(rancid) gid=1000(rancid) groupes=1000(rancid)

Bug#453086: adduser --system --group should ensure uid==gid

2008-11-11 Thread Fabrice Lorrain

Hello,

While playing with BTS #493988, I discover the following comportement
of adduser :

If you got foogroup with gid 1000

# adduser --system --group foogroup

Doesn't enforce/warn/exit that foogroup isn't in the system GID range.

This doesn't seems in par with the documentation. The documentation also
indicates that GID should be the same as UID, from adduser(1) :

...By default, system users are placed in the nogroup group. To
place the new system user in an already existing group, use the --gid or
--ingroup options. To place the new system user in a new group with the
same ID, use the --group option...

--group When combined with --system, a group with the same name and ID
as the system user is created. If not combined with --system, a group
with the given name is created. This is the default action if the
program is invoked as addgroup.

And from policy 9.2.2. :

9.2.2. UID and GID classes
--

The UID and GID numbers are divided into classes as follows:

...
 100-999:
Dynamically allocated system users and groups. Packages which
need a user or group, but can have this user or group
allocated dynamically and differently on each system, should use
`adduser --system' to create the group and/or user. `adduser' will
check for the existence of the user or group, and if necessary choose

an unused id based on the ranges specified in `adduser.conf'.

FYI, on my sid box I've ~10 package using adduser --system --group in
/var/lib/dpkg/info.
A ping to devel to check what the expected behaviour is might be
appropriate.

Bug#504305: /etc/default/portmap does not correctly interpret $OPTIONS

Hello Annibal,

I got bitten by this bug during etch -- lenny upgrade today.

As explain by Jan Schumacher and andy bezella, the call to pidofproc in

This is bad. Any plan to fix this in time for lenny ?

As you can see in the following, there seems to be missing

I don't see what's crude in there, sorry.

It's crude in the meaning of doing a full find when in most case you
are looking for $dir/*/cert.db.

$ du -sh /home/lorrain/Fab_sid/.mozilla/firefox
4,8G/home/lorrain/Fab_sid/.mozilla/firefox

err, maybe you should clean it up a bit to a sane size?

I would friendly say None of your business :-p
I've been using scrapbook (http://amb.vis.ne.jp/mozilla/scrapbook/) for
quite some time know. And I started to transform 10 year of printed
documentations back to there numerical form with it. I expect to
increase the size of my ~/.mozilla.

I just did a quick check at work, and out of 900 firefox users, none use
more than 200Mo Downgrading this bugreport to a whishlist is fine
with me.

Fixing this problem for Lenny would be appreciated.

No way. Too much a change.

Hmmm, have a look at the crude patch provided. Doesn't seem invasive
from my viewpoint.

A quick fix, could be to check only the first level directory and if no
result where found refert to the full find.

Huh?

Have a look at the patch. Doing a find -maxdepth 2 first, revert to the
full search in case you didn't find a cert8.db file.

$ find .mozilla -name cert8.db
.mozilla/firefox/fpxsk24r.default/cert8.db

Because it's in that random string dir you have to use find..

...

Out of curiosity :
- What use has OOo with iceweasel cert8.db ?

It uses the certificates (using NSS) for XML signing.

- Why chose this one in particular (I have also a
.mozilla/flock/*/cert8.db) ?

It looks for one cert8.db. Whether that's right or not is not the business
of the snippet - I know it's too unflexible but we needed a solution to
make document signing work out of the box.

Hmmm, discovering the need for cert8.db with this BTS, I was wondering
if this file shouldn't be a user ressource provided in a central way
instead of through ice* packages. Maybe a post-lenny discussion for
devel@ or [EMAIL PROTECTED]

OOo 3.1 will have reworked code
(http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=92087),
though, which makes the snippet unnecessary.
Maybe I'll backport it for 3.0, but for 2.4.1 the train has long left.

You maintain the beast, the decision is yours.

Thanks.

Hello,

Looking at http://bugs.debian.org/266965, while I agree that at the time
this was a problem (I would consider this a bad regression myself), it's
been quite a while, and an alternative has poped up: gcolor2, so I see
no point in having this bug open anymore.

Thanks,

Package: gnome-utils
Version: 2.6.2-1
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

This package is a pretty strip down version of the one in woody
and has a very bad regression signature.

Would have been nice to get a warning throug debconf NEWS.
I didn't find a better replacement (using apt-file) to gcolorsel than xcolorsel
... If you
don't find anything better, might be nice to add a Suggest on it and
maybe some line in README.Debian.

Reading /usr/share/doc/gnome-utils/README, I understand that this
overall change came from upstream. You can forward upstream that this kind
of changes makes some users pretty pissed off.

Bug#434138: Boot failure from software-RAID1 in etch during upgrade to 2.4.24-etchnhalf.1-686

2008-08-12 Thread Fabrice LORRAIN
Hello,

Through upgrade of our servers, I got biten several times by this bug.
This is a sum up :
- most of those pb occured while upgrading to 2.6.24-etchnhalf.1
- all the servers are Dell PowerEdges, with / build on
/dev/md0=/dev/sd[a,b]2, the disks been SCSI, SAS or SATA2.
- Using rootdelay=1 solved the pb on all cases (included the case in my
previous report).
- All the upgrades path have been :
 - upgrade to uptodate 2.6.18 (works on all cases except 1 out of ~30
servers)
 - then upgrade to 2.6.24 on some servers

Didn't boot without the fix (PE = PowerEdge):
- 2 * PE-1750
- 1 * PE-2800
- 2 PE-2850, one of them didn't boot on the
linux-image-2.6.18-6-686-bigmem 2.6.18.dfsg.1-18etch6 -
2.6.18.dfsg.1-22 upgrade (did without -bigmem, did with 2.6.18-bigmem or
2.4.24 with rootdelay=1)
- 3 * PE2950

Did boot 2.6.24 without the fix :
- 3 * PE-860 (SATA2 for those servers)
- 1 * PE-2650

All the server failed at the same stage in the initrd with the following
error :
...
Failure: failed to start /dev/md0

Attached :
- /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf from /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-etchnhalf.1-686
- /conf/md.conf from /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-etchnhalf.1-686
- the bootlog from the PE-2800. In the used initrd
/scripts/init-premount/udev has been edited to echo -- in premount
and -- out premount.

Getting this fixed for lenny would be appreciated.
Documenting the pb in
http://wiki.debian.org/EtchAndAHalf?highlight=%28EtchAndAHalf%29 might
help others.

As a side not, I would have appreciated a quick fix with the hard coded
sleep [1|2] instead of the undocumented rootdelay approch for etch.
Getting bitten by 2 years old bug [#366175] in debian stable is annoying.

Bug#494036: hwclock freeze mac-mini too

2008-08-10 Thread Fabrice Lorrain

Hello,

I've the same problem as Gonéri on a mac-mini core2 duo, since my
upgrade to 2.6.26-1-686 :
- Erratic freeze at boot time during time setting. The last message
showing at the console is :

Setting the system clock.
Checking root file system etc...
Setting the system clock.

I've always had 2 lines Setting the system clock so I guess the crash
happen in S11hwclock.sh.

I've less success in reproducing the crash with while true; do hwclock
; sleep 1 ; done. But while true; do hwclock ; sleep1 ; done does
every time...

Running with hpet=disable seems to fix the problem... so far.

For Gonéri, thanks for your complete BTS, it helped.

Bug#434138: Boot failure from software-RAID1 in etch during upgrade to 2.4.24-etchnhalf.1-686

2008-08-06 Thread Fabrice LORRAIN
Hello,

This bug is still pending in etch :

I just upgrade one of our servers from kernel 2.6.18-6-686 to
2.6.24-etchnhalf.1-686 and I got bitten by this bug.

Passing rootdelay=2 to the kernel at boot time seems to fix it.

The configuration is Dell PowerEdge 1750 + 2 SCSI hard drives in
software raid1.

I'm sorry but it still flickers, anyway the rate decreased: I have one
flicker every few minutes.

I don't know if it's related but I want to point out I'm still using XAA
because EXA works badly for me.

Is it better with 2.3.1 or (better) latest upstream git? Some possibly
related bugs have been fixed.

Brice

[Keeping the CC + adding 466459]

Hello Brice,

No improvement, with 2.3.1 or 2.3.2. The flicker as been there as soon
as I removed the line 'Option FramebufferCompression false' in
/etc/X11/xorg.conf, and for the last 2 weeks.

The lost of video as been here too a bunch of time.

Current version of the driver :

$ dpkg -l | grep video-intel
ii xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.3.2-1 X.Org X server -- Intel i8xx,
i9xx display driver

I can test lastest upstream driver, but I need direction on building it.

Thanks for your time.

Maybe related to #478278 and #464387.

I didn't see those pbs with 2.6.18-5-686 and -2.6.22-3-686.
Upgrading to linux-image-2.6.25-1-686 as suggested in #464387.

Bug#467144: gdmgreeter reports GLib-GObject-CRITICAL at startup

2008-04-22 Thread Fabrice Lorrain

Andrea Vettorello a écrit :

After contacting the upstream developer
(http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=527856), he suggested to
check with default themes and at least here (gdm 2.20.5-1) with the
three themes I've tried (Circles, Debian MoreBlue and Happy Gnome)
there are no errors in the logs.

Hello Andrea and thanks for your answers.

I wasn't paying full attention to my logs yesterday. After some more
thorough tests, there is only one broken theme : Blue Swirl.

The following themes work fine :
Bijou, Circle, Debblue, Debian Ayo, Debian,Debian MoreBlue, Glass Foot,
Hantzley, Industrial, Happy Gnome, Kde Cristal, Linsta.

So this bugs could be rename gdm : 'Blue Swirl' theme broken.

Concerning upstream questions (I do not use bugzilla, sorry) :

GDM shouldn't fail if there is an invalid image, so this is a bug.
It's not a bug, GDM doesn't fail or crash, it is just complaining in
syslog/daemon.log.

Could you please close this bug when you've confirmed that the problem
only happens with non-default themes.
The pb happen to be only with the 'Blue Swirl' theme. so id=527856 can
be close.

Bug#477238: xen-tools: Please, remove /domains directory creation.

2008-04-21 Thread Fabrice Lorrain
Package: xen-tools
Version: 3.9-2
Severity: normal

Hello,

$ xen-create-image --help states :
...
--dir Specify where the output images should go.
Subdirectories will be created for each guest
If you do not wish to use loopback images specify --lvm
or --evms. (These three options are mutually exclusive.)

The same information is in the manual page.

In fact xen-create-image and friend is adding a domains subdirectory
to the provided path.

It is unusfull and annoying. It does not let the user have a layout
like (unless I miss some documentation ) :
/svn/xen-domains/domain_foo1
/svn/xen-domains/domain_bar1
etc...

I would appreciate if this could be fixed in a next upload/release.

Removing /domains/ on any line matching the following grep seems a
quick way to fix this :
$ grep domains /usr/bin/{xen,xt}-*

Bug#477249: /usr/lib/xen-tools/debian.d/80-install-modules is costly in space.

2008-04-21 Thread Fabrice Lorrain
Package: xen-tools
Version: 3.9-2
Severity: minor

Hello,

I've just discovered why my disk.img is much bigger than what I
expected :
/usr/lib/xen-tools/debian.d/80-install-modules is costing
almost 160Mo uneeded modules (4 kernels installed on this box).

Using a cp -au /lib/modules/*xen*/ ${prefix}/lib/modules
instead of the current cp should work in most case.

Otherwise providing a parameter to xen-create-image to let the user
choose the modules to copy would be better.

Thanks.

Bug#474352: network-manager: Network-manager shouldn't stop the network during an upgrade

2008-04-05 Thread Fabrice Lorrain
Package: network-manager
Version: 0.6.6-1
Severity: normal

Hello,

During today sudo aptitude upgrade (sid box), I got :

Preparing to replace network-manager 0.6.5-5 (using
/network-manager_0.6.6-1_i386.deb) ...
Stopping network connection manager: NetworkManager

And then the process is stuck as is most of my X11 environnenment.
Mostly related to the fact that /home is nfs mounted.

A local root account on the console + a bunch of kill, dpkg --configure
-a, aptitude install fixed the situation.

Hello,

Following B. Goglin suggestion in #466462, I'm running
xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.2.99.901 from experimental since yesterday.

It doesn't seems to improve the situation much, I just loose my video

It seems that this crash killed my session (gdm and all). As before, I
was unable to get the video back -- rebooted the box.

Hello,

BTS entry to confirm that the screen flicker problem is not fixed for
my video card (945GM/GS provided in the mac-mini core 2 duo) with this
new driver.

This flicker is annoying.

Related to https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13326 ?

Brice

Hello Brice,

Lot's of noise is this upstream bug. I'm not sure it's related. The
problem I had was more like the one described in
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=463382.

FYI, this problem disappear by using Option FramebufferCompression
false in xorg.conf. Thanks for the hint in Bug#466459.

I hadn't had a single flicker for the last 4 weeks.

If you feel like downgrading the severity, no lower than serious,
please. This driver is not suitable for lenny.

As reported by others, since the 2.2.x branch of intel driver, X is
going randomly in some suspend mode, and the only way out of it is a plain
reboot. Sucks.

Do you have multiple outpus connected enabled when the crash happens? It
seems to be related in some cases.

Does
Option FramebufferCompression false
help?

Can you try with some other kernels? I sometimes felt like 2.6.18 didn't
cause any crash while =2.6.22 does. Not sure about 2.6.24 or later.

Brice

Hello Brice,

and thanks a lot for the information provided. Using Option
FramebufferCompression false did fix both this problem (and the one
reported in Bug#466462).
X11 hasn't crash or gone in this unstoppable suspend mode for the last 4
weeks.

Nope, macmini with a single screen attached

cause any crash while =2.6.22 does.
I didn't do any test but my current kernel = 2.6.22-3 was having this pb.

Well, the problem occured with 0.824 which was different from 0.825.
In principle 0.825 should work _with_ and _without_ cdd-common - provided
that cdd-common is cleanly installed.

No, the pb was there before I installed cdd-common.

Which is not astonishing because 0.824 was broken and at least
according to your bug report you tried to install this and failed.
So you have some broken packages on your system and I would like
to make sure that this does not cause the trouble.

This where the trouble is :

$ ls -l /etc/cdd/
total 4
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 425 oct 23 2006 cdd.conf

and education-astronomy is clearly expecting something here.

Well, the postins says:

   if [ -d /etc/cdd -a -f /etc/cdd/cdd.conf ] ; then
  ...

so _if_ (and _only_ _if_) cdd-common is installed (/etc/cdd/cdd.conf
is part of this package) this is doing anything. So if you want to
solve your problem for the moment, just deinstall cdd-common (renaming/
removing /etc/cdd/cdd.conf might help as well)

Is a mkdir /etc/cdd/education a correct way to fix it or is there
some better way.

No, it will not really help. You might do this but then you will need
most probably /etc/cdd/education/education.conf as well. Currently the
only reason for these config files is to organise user-menus. If you
like to test this feature you might like to copy the file
/etc/cdd/med/med.conf

from med-common or /etc/cdd/science/science.conf into this place.

So if you want to solve the installation problem you should either
purge cdd-common or move /etc/cdd/cdd.conf to a different place.

But you are right there is a remaining problem in the education-*
packages because the code in postinst/postrm file is duplicated
(which is no harm if there is no /etc/cdd/cdd.conf file at all)
and I go back to the next cycle of fixing cdd-dev to fit the need
of Debian-Edu.

Kind regards

 Andreas.

Hello Andreas,

Thanks for your lengthy and very precise explanations.
As expected, purging cdd-common fixed the installation pb for the 0.825
versions (forgot LANG=C, sorry):

Bug#466459: xserver-xorg-video-intel: intel driver loose/crash video at random

2008-02-18 Thread Fabrice Lorrain
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.2.0.90-3
Severity: critical
Justification: causes serious data loss

Hello,

This driver has been unusable on my mac-mini (core 2 duo) since
novembre (and on several intel chipset, from other bts entries).
It has been crashing X at random resulting in lost of data
of the current session and breaking any distants ones.
(most notably my ongoing blobwars game ;-)

If you feel like downgrading the severity, no lower than serious,
please. This driver is not suitable for lenny.

As reported by others, since the 2.2.x branch of intel driver, X is
going randomly in some suspend mode, and the only way out of it is a plain
reboot. Sucks.
