Bug#988502: fonts-terminus: version number in filename
On 14.05.2021 11:48, Reiner Herrmann wrote: Package: fonts-terminus Version: 1.1.1+git20200723-2 Hi, Hi Reiner, I noticed that the filename of the Terminus ttf file contains a version number: TerminusTTF-4.46.0.ttf This makes it difficult for other packages to depend on the font and symlink to it (as the version can easily change). Thank you for the report, I agree, and will try to get this fixed (atm only for experimental, later for sid etc). Either I just patch it the latest version of the upstream project, or split it completely away from cool-retro-term. I'm not sure yet. Can you please use a stable filename without version number? Yes. Or is the version supposed to be fixed and will never change? I don't think so, but let me check upstream: http://terminus-font.sourceforge.net It looks like creating a new src/bin package called fonts-terminus/fonts-terminus would be the much better approach: https://sid.ethz.ch/debian/fonts-terminus/ after ./configure; make; make otb I end up with built fonts called: ter-u12b.otb: TrueType Font data, 12 tables, 1st "EBDT", 12 names, Unicode, Copyright (C) 2020 Dimitar Toshkov ZhekovTerminusBoldTerminus Bold bitmap height 12Terminus Bold ter-u12n.otb: TrueType Font data, 12 tables, 1st "EBDT", 12 names, Unicode, Copyright (C) 2020 Dimitar Toshkov ZhekovTerminusRegularTerminus Regular bitmap height 12Terminu ter-u14b.otb: TrueType Font data, 12 tables, 1st "EBDT", 12 names, Unicode, Copyright (C) 2020 Dimitar Toshkov ZhekovTerminusBoldTerminus Bold bitmap height 14Terminus Bold ter-u14n.otb: TrueType Font data, 12 tables, 1st "EBDT", 12 names, Unicode, Copyright (C) 2020 Dimitar Toshkov ZhekovTerminusRegularTerminus Regular bitmap height 14Terminu ter-u16b.otb: TrueType Font data, 12 tables, 1st "EBDT", 12 names, Unicode, Copyright (C) 2020 Dimitar Toshkov ZhekovTerminusBoldTerminus Bold bitmap height 16Terminus Bold ter-u16n.otb: TrueType Font data, 12 tables, 1st "EBDT", 12 names, Unicode, Copyright (C) 2020 Dimitar Toshkov ZhekovTerminusRegularTerminus Regular bitmap height 16Terminu ter-u18b.otb: TrueType Font data, 12 tables, 1st "EBDT", 12 names, Unicode, Copyright (C) 2020 Dimitar Toshkov ZhekovTerminusBoldTerminus Bold bitmap height 18Terminus Bold ter-u18n.otb: TrueType Font data, 12 tables, 1st "EBDT", 12 names, Unicode, Copyright (C) 2020 Dimitar Toshkov ZhekovTerminusRegularTerminus Regular bitmap height 18Terminu ter-u20b.otb: TrueType Font data, 12 tables, 1st "EBDT", 12 names, Unicode, Copyright (C) 2020 Dimitar Toshkov ZhekovTerminusBoldTerminus Bold bitmap height 20Terminus Bold ter-u20n.otb: TrueType Font data, 12 tables, 1st "EBDT", 12 names, Unicode, Copyright (C) 2020 Dimitar Toshkov ZhekovTerminusRegularTerminus Regular bitmap height 20Terminu ter-u22b.otb: TrueType Font data, 12 tables, 1st "EBDT", 12 names, Unicode, Copyright (C) 2020 Dimitar Toshkov ZhekovTerminusBoldTerminus Bold bitmap height 22Terminus Bold ter-u22n.otb: TrueType Font data, 12 tables, 1st "EBDT", 12 names, Unicode, Copyright (C) 2020 Dimitar Toshkov ZhekovTerminusRegularTerminus Regular bitmap height 22Terminu ter-u24b.otb: TrueType Font data, 12 tables, 1st "EBDT", 12 names, Unicode, Copyright (C) 2020 Dimitar Toshkov ZhekovTerminusBoldTerminus Bold bitmap height 24Terminus Bold ter-u24n.otb: TrueType Font data, 12 tables, 1st "EBDT", 12 names, Unicode, Copyright (C) 2020 Dimitar Toshkov ZhekovTerminusRegularTerminus Regular bitmap height 24Terminu ter-u28b.otb: TrueType Font data, 12 tables, 1st "EBDT", 12 names, Unicode, Copyright (C) 2020 Dimitar Toshkov ZhekovTerminusBoldTerminus Bold bitmap height 28Terminus Bold ter-u28n.otb: TrueType Font data, 12 tables, 1st "EBDT", 12 names, Unicode, Copyright (C) 2020 Dimitar Toshkov ZhekovTerminusRegularTerminus Regular bitmap height 28Terminu ter-u32b.otb: TrueType Font data, 12 tables, 1st "EBDT", 12 names, Unicode, Copyright (C) 2020 Dimitar Toshkov ZhekovTerminusBoldTerminus Bold bitmap height 32Terminus Bold ter-u32n.otb: TrueType Font data, 12 tables, 1st "EBDT", 12 names, Unicode, Copyright (C) 2020 Dimitar Toshkov ZhekovTerminusRegularTerminus Regular bitmap height 32Terminu Now it'll be fun how/with what name to ship, and which ones... help welcome, also am on #debian-fonts on irc. Bug#985815: RFS: usermanager/1.0.74+git20210323-1 [ITP] -- Graphical user manager
Hi Matthew, FWIW, upstream seem to have an intent to resolve this, https://github.com/xen0vas/UserManager/issues/16: Application usage from users with limited privileges - Implement setuid access with privilege control xen0vas commented on Jun 27, 2020 Application usage from users with limited privileges in order to be able to use UserManager for changing passwords and have limited access. The implementation includes setuid setgid privilege checks as well as dropping and restoring privileges as needed due to elevated functionality when changing passwords and accessing system files. Gürkan, maybe you could work with them to deal with this prior to packaging? Good find the issue/16, let's see what happens. Maybe upstream can fix it altogether himself or with your help? :) Ah I forgot to answer kbs question about the audience and why the GUI is maybe useful/needed: it's users, and the GUI allows for detailed settings like expiry etc, without doing it wrong (syntax) or reading up on it in manual pages. I was thinking of this: https://wiki.debian.org/SmallOrganisationServer

Absolutely, although I want to note, my test showed the gif is displayed with GNOME. > Some method of su{,do}-to-root should be providen -- as is, the program > fails to start claiming it needs root, and starting it as root manually > involves some bits generally unknown by users who need a clicky-clicky > tool (ie, the intended audience). for upstream Hrm, I then don't quite see what the intended audience for this package could be. The basic instructions how to run a GUI program as root (start a shell, find out $DISPLAY, su/sudo, set up display, cp ~user/.Xauthority ~, invoke from cmdline) are already far more complex than just running relevant adduser/usermod/deluser commands from a shell. The audience is simple GUI users, true, the note "for upstream" was meant "for upstream to fix". My recommendation would be open terminal, be root, start UserManager. I don't even want to think about the possibilities how to do this (right or not). For the upstream to break his head imho. And besides, running a GUI program as root is not that good an idea, compared to separating out the privileged parts (be it to an unreliable dbus complexity, or to a simple easily-auditable setuid helper). Possibly. But really, I don't know enough about crossing privilege boundaries in a GUI to be comfortable reviewing this bit. Ack. Meow!

Hi Adam, The .desktop file has a stray line at its start. fixed The menu icon for .desktop doesn't show up for me (in XFCE). probably because it's .gif and fd.o doesn't support it It should be grouped in "System" rather than "Other". maybe or rather probably The package's short desc shouldn't be capitalized. fixed The long desc shouldn't mention that this program started as an university assignment, it's a bit of history not relevant to using the program. dropped Some method of su{,do}-to-root should be providen -- as is, the program fails to start claiming it needs root, and starting it as root manually involves some bits generally unknown by users who need a clicky-clicky tool (ie, the intended audience). for upstream When deleting an user ("gnats" in my case) it threw a message that /home/gnats doesn't exist -- despite $HOME for that user being /var/lib/gnats (obtainable by getpwent()->pw_dir). for upstream Meow! Woff!

Bug#977612: ITP: komposter -- lightweight music composing system
Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist Owner: Gürkan Myczko X-Debbugs-Cc: debian-de...@lists.debian.org, debian-multime...@lists.debian.org * Package name: komposter Version : 0+git20201216 Upstream Author : Noora Halme, Trilkk/Faemiyah, Adrien Destugues * URL : http://komposter.haxor.fi https://github.com/electronoora/komposter * License : GPL-2+ and MIT Description : lightweight music composing system This is a lightweight music composing system intended mainly to be used in applications where the size of the executable must be minimized such as 4K and 64K intros. . It is built using a modular "virtual analog" model, where the composer can build the synthesizers from scratch using simple basic building blocks. This minimizes the amount of code required and relies more on data, which can be compressed more effectively. . A simple pattern-based sequencer is used to create songs which use up to 24 voices, each of which can use a different synthesizer. Each synthesizer can be programmed with a number of patches that can be switched between patterns. . Included with Komposter is a music player with full x86 assembly source code as well as a converter for generating nasm-includeable files from song files. Source code for the converter is also provided. It will be maintained in the Multimedia team. (it's already at mentors.d.n and sid.ethz.ch/debian)
